Werden die Ozeane also wärmer, könnte das die CO2-Anreicherung in der Atmosphäre und damit den Treibhauseffekt noch zusätzlich anheizen.

Meeresspiegel steigt Noch ein anderer Grund macht die Vorgänge zum Politikum: Eine im Sommer eisfreie Arktis wird mittelfristig den Planeten verändern. Noch unklar ist bisher, in welchem Maße sie den Treibhauseffekt durch das Auftauen des Permafrosts verstärken könnte (siehe Artikel unten). Klar dürfte hingegen sein, daß der Eisverlust das benachbarte grönländische Eisschild weiter destabilisieren wird. Bereits seit Beginn des neuen Jahrhunderts wurde auf der von einem kilometerdicken Eispanzer bedeckten Insel vermehrtes sommerliches Schmelzen und als mittelbare Folge eine Zunahme der Eisberge registriert, die von den Gletschern abbrechen und im Meer davontreiben. Zumindest im Norden und im Nordosten wird dieser Prozeß bisher noch durch das Packeis vor der Küste stark gebremst. Fällt diese Barriere weg, wird auch dort das Tempo des Eisverlustes zunehmen. Damit könnte sich die Prognose des IPCC, wonach der Meeresspiegel bis zum Ende des Jahrhunderts um bis zu 56 Zentimeter steigen wird, als zu optimistisch erweisen. Realistischer dürfte da schon ein Anstieg um einen Meter sein. Für die deutsche Nordseeküste über das Nildelta und Westafrika bis zu den Küstenmetropolen Südasiens sind das überaus bedrohliche Aussichten.

I doubt that Schmitz was sincere in his quest to investigate sex slave trade in the military- it was probably damage control or bartering tool. The whole DynCorp scandal stayed pretty well below the radar.

When Congress asked about 5 million executive branch e-mails that went missing, a White House lawyer pointed the finger at an outside IT contractor.
The only problem? No such IT contractor exists, according to sources close to the investigation of a possible violation of the Federal Records and Presidential Records acts. The offices of the president and vice president are required to preserve all official communications, including e-mail, by the Presidential Records Act, a Watergate-era law which establishes that such communications are the property of the American people and cannot be destroyed. The Federal Records Act covers the archiving of communications by other parts of the executive branch. The National Security Archive and CREW lawsuits paint a picture of a White House that gave low priority to compliance with its archival duties under the law. The research institute alleges that the Executive Office of the President abandoned the automated record management system (ARMS) built by the previous administration to securely archive e-mails in 2002, never implementing another system for that purpose. The time period for the abandonment of the legacy archival system coincides with the Executive Office of the President's switch from Lotus Notes to Microsoft Exchange and Outlook, referred to by White House Press Secretary Dana Perino in an April 13 press briefing.
"In 2002, they abandoned Lotus Notes, went to Microsoft Outlook, abandoned ARMS, but never put in a new electronic records management system. So I'm told they just dumped e-mail on servers. This meant that anybody with access to the servers could potentially dump data and delete documents," said Weismann.
"Each agency of the EOP's records are commingled. It's all just a dump. How much is missing? I think 5 million is the low end of what's missing."

"The Nation" (September 25, 2005) magazine reported that Schmitz spent three months redesigning the seal of the Inspector General's office to include elements of von Steuben's family crest, including the von Steuben family motto, Sub Tutela Altissimi Semper, "Under the Protection of the Almighty." (Schmitz was quoted in the LA Times article as saying that the eagle of the previous seal looked "like a chicken".) Schmitz authored an article in the in-house journal of the federal inspectors general about Von Steuben and mentioned him in virtually every speech he made while in office ("The Enduring Legacy of Inspector General von Steuben," Public Inquiry, F/W 2002, [1]. "He was consumed with all things German and all things Von Steuben," said a government official quoted in the LA Times article. "He was obsessed."
Schmitz also took an unusual interest in the sex slave trade. His office investigated the involvement of the U.S. military in the sex trade in South Korea, Bosnia + Kosovo, but found little beyond the propensity of soldiers to frequent brothels, an inexcusable moral lapse, according to Schmitz's testimony before Congress and an article he wrote that was published on the website of the World Security Network. . . .

I've been watching the bizarre Schmitz clan since the mid 1970s, when paterfamilias John G. Schmitz -- a man so far to the right he got kicked out of the John Birch Society -- ran for President under the American Independent Party banner. (Slogan: "When you're out of Schmitz, you're out of gear!") We later learned that Schmitz kept a mistress and a second family, including an infant son with a mutilated penis.
Schmitz’s daughter, school teacher Mary Kay LeTourneau, made national headlines when it was discovered that the father of her children was a thirteen year old student. Her brother John P. Schmitz was an Iran Contra player and Deputy Counsel for Bush the elder, a man despised by father John G. John P's brother, Joseph -- a member of the Knights of Malta and the Federalist Society -- was Haliburton's greatest enabler when the company was stea...er, misplacing Iraq reconstruction money. Joseph Schmitz is the other noteworthy sibling (not counting the one with the mutilated penis; I have no idea what happened to him). A member of the Knights of Malta, the Federalist Society, the American Council on Germany and something ominously titled the American Security Network, Joseph Schmitz led the effort to keep the blame for the Abu Ghraib abuses restricted to the lower levels. "Zweifelsfrei ist wohl, dass gegen Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs das Betriebsgelände der Afa in Hannover systematisch zu einer Außenstelle des KZ Neuengamme umgewandelt wurde. Die Häftlinge mussten eine lebensgefährliche Arbeit verrichten, die SS bewachte die Geschundenen. Viele starben. Günther Quandt hatte in einem internen Schreiben eine 'Fluktuation' in seinem Werk eingeplant, er kalkulierte also offenkundig den Tod vieler Arbeiter aus dem KZ ein. Auch auf dem Berliner Afa-Gelände wurden KZ-Häftlinge eingesetzt. Schließlich profitierten die Quandts auch von den Eroberungen der Wehrmacht. Kaum waren die deutschen Soldaten in Luxemburg, übernahm Quandts Afa die Leitung des Betriebs des Unternehmers Leon Laval - der sich weigerte, seine Aktien an Quandt zu verkaufen. Da bewirkten auch Folterungen der Gestapo nichts, mit der Quandt ausweislich der nun gefundenen Dokumente kooperierte. Laval kam ins KZ - und überlebte. Die Quandts gehören heute zu den reichsten Menschen in Deutschland." Aber steht das nicht alles schon in Rüdiger Jungbluths hervorragender Biografie "Die Quandts"?

Der Konkurrenzkampf um deren Herzen und Verstand war vorbei. Wie Margaret Thatcher gesagt haben soll: Tina (There Is No Alternative – Es gibt keine Alternative) ist die neue Ordnung der Dinge. Es gab keinen anderen Ort, an den zu gehen die arbeitenden Massen sich hätten vorstellen können. Da es einen totalen Sieg errungen hatte, war das große Kapital nun in der Lage, die Verhältnisse ausschließlich nach eigenem Gusto zu gestalten – zu Hause und auch im Ausland. Es würde keine Rücksichten oder Gefälligkeiten mehr geben, nicht für die Arbeiter, nicht einmal für die angestellten Fachkräfte oder das mittlere Management.

Jahrelang sahen sich die politischen und ökonomischen Eliten der Vereinigten Staaten in einem tödlichen Kampf mit den kommunistischen Ländern um die Treue des Volkes sowohl im In- als auch im Ausland. Der Zwang, sich mit einem alternativen ökonomischen System in Konkurrenz zu befinden, setzte dem Grenzen, wie uneingeschränkt sich westliche Führer eine schlechte Behandlung ihrer Arbeiterbevölkerung erlaubten. In der Tat gaben sie sich große Mühe zu beweisen, wieviel schöner das Leben für die Arbeiter im Kapitalismus war. So kam der »historische Kompromiß« zustande. Immer wieder wurde argumentiert, daß die US-Arbeiter einen höheren Lebensstandard genießen würden als ihre Gegenspieler unter dem Joch des Kommunismus. Statistiken wurden geliefert, um zu zeigen, daß sich die sowjetischen Arbeiter viele Stunden mehr plagen mußten als die US-Arbeiter, um verschiedene Konsumgüter zu kaufen. Bezogen auf die medizinische Versorgung, die Miete, Wohnungsbeschaffung, Erziehung, Transportmittel und andere Leistungen, die in den USA so teuer sind, in kommunistischen Ländern jedoch stark subventioniert wurden, gab es keinen Vergleich.

Die Neubewertung zeigt, dass die Anleger einen zu hohen Preis bezahlt haben. Das könnte auch Aktien- und Rohstoffmärkte betreffen. Diese sind weit über den Wert angestiegen, der durch Fundamentaldaten gerechtfertigt wäre.

Die Finanzinstitute haben ihre eigene technologische Revolution erlebt, die sie in die Lage versetzt hat, mit einer nie erlebten Geschwindigkeit Produkte zu erfinden und anzubieten. Scheinbar risikolose Erträge regten den Appetit auf diese Produkte an, während die Gewinne in traditionellen Märkten unbefriedigend waren.
