03.Dec.2006 https://www.cannonfire.blogspot.com/Impeachment Words of wisdom from a D.U. contributor named cali: Impeachment Is Like The Final Stages Of A Serious Chess Game
You have to be able to see the whole board and figure out how to win. That means you don't rush it.
To succeed means to convict in the Senate. That means you need to do two very important things: You have to persuade the American people to support and understand why it must be done + you have to make a case so compelling that foot dragging red state dems and the majority of the repubs must vote for conviction or suffer the political consequences.
Howls for the virtual heads of bush/cheney on pikes, aren't gonna cut it. We need investigations before impeachment articles are introduced, not so much to make the case to the Senate, but to make the case to the American people.

We now learn that Alexander Litvinenko was blackmailing Russian oligarchs. See the Guardian story here and the Times here.

A few excerpts: Litvinenko claimed to have made contact with senior sources in the heart of the FSB, the successor to the KGB,

who would supply him with a stream of confidential dossiers on any target that the 43-year-old exile requested.
These documents would, according to Litvinenko, be used to 'blackmail' some of Russia's most shadowy and formidable figures.

It was simple: either they would pay or the world would learn their blackest secrets.

And... Although he described himself as a journalist, Litvinenko tried unsuccessfully to muscle in on several lucrative business deals with Russians.
On the day that he fell ill he was attempting to broker a gas and oil exploration deal involving a British conglomerate that he claimed to represent.

He was envious of the money that many of his former colleagues were making.

The idea that Leonardo's mother could have been a slave who came to Tuscany from Constantinople — now Istanbul — is not new and has been the object of other research.

"The one we found in this finger tip applies to 60 % of the Arabic population, which suggests the possibility that his mother was of Middle Eastern origin," Capasso said.

Other experts, however, say that determining ethnicity based on fingerprints is vague.

The artist often ate while working + Capasso and other experts said his fingerprints could include traces of saliva, blood or the food he ate the night before. It is information that could help clear up questions about his origins.

Certain distinctive features are more common in the fingerprints of some ethnic populations, experts say.

"How's your boy?"
Let's take this story out of a political context.
Let's say you're watching a film about a crusading D.A. who has targeted a seemingly untouchable crime kingpin. The D.A. has a son who works in a garage. One night, a mysterious explosion destroys this garage. Although no-one is harmed, nerves are frazzled.
Soon after, the D.A. and the kingpin meet at a fancy social function. The fat crime boss, dressed in a resplendent three-piece suit, approaches the crusading prosecutor. The crime lord takes a puff on his cigar, flashes a dazzling grin + asks:
"How's your boy?"
Everyone in the audience would understand the subtext.

02.Dec.2006 https://www.cannonfire.blogspot.com/ The first thing you have to understand is that Litvinenko was a liar . Like Anatoli Golitsyn, he was in the business of selling hallucinations. In the 1960s, we had "The Sino-Soviet split is a fraud!"

In the 1970 s, we had "The Russian military could overwhelm ours!" In the 1980s, we had "The KGB shot the Pope!" Today, we have "Putin controls Osama!" In each case, the faux-hip bought into the lie in order to prove that they knew more than the average bear. In the end, they proved only their own gullibility.
Litvinenko may have started to balk at his assigned function, at which point his masters decided that he was more useful as a martyr. The current "Igor" nonsense is further evidence that we are witnessing a movie . Pass the popcorn.

02.Dec.2006 https://www.cannonfire.blogspot.com Note too that Litvinenko spread crap about Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi -- a disinformation barrage desgined to keep Berlusconi in office. And the Russian tried to claim that the Red Brigades acted on Moscow's order, when we know that the "left-wing" Italian violence of the

1970 s was actually stage-managed by SISMI -- or rather "Super-SISMI," the P2 faction within Italian intelligence. A classic "false flag" operation.
The accusations against Prodi and Putin metastisized over time, as Litvinenko kept "remembering" things that far outdistanced previous statements. If you recall the Judith Campbell Exner disinfo, you know the drill.

02.Dec.2006
https://www.cannonfire.blogspot.com/ Litvinenko: Not EEEgore. EYEgor! Rupert Murdoch's News of the World is reporting that they know the name of Alexander Litivenko's killer: UK's News of the World newspaper claims that they know who poisoned former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko, but only print his middle name - Igor "for legal reasons."
The 46-year-old expert in covert operations belonged to Russia's Spetsnaz special forces, the paper states and was fingered in a document Litvinenko received right before he was poisoned with radioactive polonium-210.
Litvinenko handed Scotland Yard the dossier he received at London's Itsu sushi bar + it contains a long hit-list with his name on top, News of the World claims. This is getting silly. In Russia, the middle name is the patronymic. "Igor" is impossible, although "Igorovich" is possible. How likely is it that this newspaper (a Murdoch rag, naturally!) would have truncated the patronymic? Not very.
I've come to suspect that the entire death of Litvinenko has been a stage-managed spectacle from the start. The death itself is quite real, but much of the surrounding storyline has been concocted. See
here: Of course, one of the chief obstacles in assessing the situation is the fact that almost everything we knew about the case for weeks was spoon-fed to the media by the most elite PR operation in Britain. Almost from the moment that Litvinenko fell ill, he disappeared behind a phalanx of handlers paid for by his patron, Boris Berezovsky, the fugitive Russian billionaire and shadowlands operator par excellence. To handle - and generate - the publicity surrounding the incident, Berezovsky called on his old friend Baron Bell of Belgravia, who, back when he was just plain old Tim Bell, served as the private propaganda chief for Margaret Thatcher, as Sourcewatch reports. The baron has also flacked for disgraced media mogul Conrad Black, disgraceful media mogul Rupert Murdoch + the Coalition Provisional Authority, the mechanism set up by the Bush administration to eviscerate Iraq. Ah, the smell of greasepaint. I think we can now safely presume that Litvinenko's deathbed "J'Accuse!" directed at Putin is fictional.

02.Dec.2006 Murtha Raises Alarm Over Study Group, Warns ‘Kissinger Came Out With The Same Type of Thing’ - Think Progress

Tonight on CNN’s Situation Room, Rep. John Murtha (D-PA) said that the Iraq Study Group’s reported recommendations for troop withdrawals from Iraq were “unacceptable.” According to the Washington Post, the group will recommend that roughly half of U.S. forces be redeployed from Iraq by 2008.

[T]he problem is they say it depends on the circumstances on the ground,” Murtha said. “Well, if it depends on circumstances on the ground it’s not a lot different than what President Bush is saying.” He added, “Kissinger came out with the same type of thing in the 1960s and three years later we got out of there, but we lost 20,000 troops.” Watch it:

Murtha noted that he is “going to meet with the White House officials sometime next week and try to convince them that it’s just not going well. It’s not going to be better.” Digg It! Full transcript:

MURTHA: Now, the commission is saying let’s redeploy, let’s change the policy of stay the course to redeployment.

Well, if it depends on circumstances on the ground it’s not a lot different than what President Bush is saying. And then President Bush says he’s going to ignore it anyway.

Now, we have to have a change in policy here and that’s what we’re going to work on all this year, trying to work with this president in trying to reduce our number of troops in Iraq and do it as soon as practicable.

BLITZER: Leon Panetta, a former White House chief of staff under President Clinton, OMB director, former member of the House himself. Did he give you any sense of how specific, though, they might be in terms of a time line?

MURTHA: Well, he said, I think, the end of 2008 have all the troops out, but that’s unacceptable.

BLITZER: You mean all the troops or just the combat troops?

(CROSSTALK)

BLITZER: Because half of the troops are combat troops; the other are support troops or trainers.

MURTHA: Yes, that’s true. He said combat troop. But that is unacceptable to me. We’re costing $8 billion a month, Wolf. Since I spoke out there were 400 attacks a day. Now there’s 800 attacks a day. All the measurements which you and I have talked about before, oil production, electricity production, below prewar level. The Iraqis want us out of there, the world wants us out of there. We have to find a way to redeploy the troops and we have to do it sooner rather than later.

Now, we have to work on it this year. I’m going to meet with the White House officials sometime next week and try to convince them that it’s just not going well. It’s not going to be better.

Kissinger came out with the same type of thing in the 1960s and three years later we got out of there, but we lost 20,000 troops. We’re just not making the progress. And then they say, well, we need 300,000 Iraqis trained. Then they say we need 100,000 more Iraqis trained. They keep changing the guidelines. That’s the problem with this report.

02.Dec.2006 How the Chinese Wikipedia Differs from the English - Zonk 57 bulled writes

"News.com is running a story on differences found in Wikipedia's Chinese site content, as compared to content on the same subjects from the English site. The article goes into a discussion about how the 'sanitized' information is so prevalent in Chinese education that it is seen as the 'truth'." From the article: "[Some] say the object should be to spread reliable information as widely as possible + that, in any case, self-censorship is pointless because the government still frequently blocks access to Wikipedia for most Chinese Internet users. 'There is a lot of confusion about whether they should obey the neutral point of view or offer some compromises to the government,' said Isaac Mao, a well-known Chinese blogger and user of the encyclopedia. 'To the local Wikipedians, the first objective is to make it well known among Chinese, to get people to understand the principles of Wikipedia step by step + not to get the thing blocked by the government.'"

Guess Who Didn't Come To Dinner
By Daniel Politi
Posted Thursday,

30.Nov.2006 at 5:30 AM ET

The New York Times + the Washington Post's late edition lead with a first look at what the Iraq Study Group will include in their final report as they finished deliberations in Washington yesterday.

Although no specific timelines will be mentioned, the commission will recommend a gradual withdrawal of troops from Iraq, implying that this drawdown should begin next year.

The final report, which will have about 100 pages, will be released next week.

The Los Angeles Times leads locally but takes advantage of its late deadline and goes high with the breakfast meeting between President Bush and Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Maliki in Jordan.

The two were scheduled to have dinner yesterday with King Abdullah, but Maliki abruptly canceled.

There was no clear reason given for the cancellation, although several possibilities have been raised.

The Wall Street Journal tops its worldwide newsbox with the no-show prime minister saying it meant Bush's trip to the Middle East "got off to a rocky start."

USA Today leads with news that British investigators looking into the death of former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko found "very low traces" of radiation on two British Airways jetliners.

Another plane is grounded in Moscow but so far has turned up no traces of radiation. Authorities emphasized the risk to passengers is very low, while they didn't specify whether polonium-210 was the substance found.

The three planes had recently flown from London to Moscow, but they had also flown to other cities, including Athens, Frankfurt + Madrid.

In recent weeks, 33,000 passengers flew in these planes. To continue reading, click here.

02.Dec.2006 Pundit Admits Forcing Congressman To Swear In With Bible ‘May Well Be’ Unconstitutional - Nico

Right-wing talk show host Dennis Prager has raised a firestorm charging that Rep.-elect Kieth Ellison (D-MN), the first Muslim elected to Congress, must swear in using a Bible. He said that if Ellison swears in with a Quran, it would undermine “American civilization” and be akin to swearing in with a copy of Hitler’s “Mein Kampf.”

In an interview with USA Today, Prager acknowledged that “trying to ban Ellison from choosing to use a Quran ‘may well be’ unconstitutional.” As various commentators have pointed out, Prager’s demand violates the Constitution’s provision that “no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.”

Also, as ThinkProgress noted yesterday, the entire controversy is moot, since the swearing-in ceremony for the House of Representatives never includes a religious book.

Nevertheless, Prager said today “that he’s going to keep pressing the issue,” and that he’ll “be writing and talking about this issue again.” In a show of support, the American Family Association has launched a campaign urging Congress “to pass a law making the Bible the book used in the swearing-in ceremony of representatives and senators.”

02.Dec.2006 Fox News ‘Unwilling To Fall Into…Tender Trap’ Of Calling Iraq A Civil War - Think Progress

Fox News has declared that it will not use the phrase “civil war” to describe the current violence in Iraq.

Fox’s Senior Vice President John Moody — whose infamous politically-slanted internal memos have gained notoriety — said in a statement that “some are using the term civil war to indicate failure, not inside Iraq, but on U.S. policy in Iraq. We’re unwilling to fall into that tender trap. We’re not using the term because there are non-Iraqis in the fray and that makes it something different.” Watch it:

Fox News is right, Iraq is not simply a civil war. ThinkProgress noted in October that Iraq has devolved into at least four distinct violent conflicts. But that does not mean that one of those conflicts is not a civil war. Indeed, according to scholars surveyed by the New York Times, not only is Iraq in the midst of a civil war, the current level of bloodshed “already puts Iraq in the top ranks of the civil wars of the last half-century.”

Full transcript:

WILSON: The debate over terminology has become a media issue following NBC’s formal decision to use the term civil war, a decision first announced on Monday’s Today Show.

MATT LAUER, THE TODAY SHOW: NBC News has decided a change in terminology is warranted, that the situation in Iraq, with armed militarized factions fighting for their own political agendas, can now be characterized as civil war.

WILSON: And NBC correspondents have used the term several times since.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Iraq’s worsening civil war will dominate –

WILSON: Other news organizations have not followed NBC’s lead. For example, the executive producer of the CBS Evening News said, “to be honest with you, I think it’s a political statement, not a news judgment.” At CNN, an official statement, “CNN will continue to report on what is happening in Iraq on a day to day basis and we will also report on the on- going debate in academic and political circles about what constitutes a civil war.”

The senior V.P. for editorial here at Fox said today, “some are using the term civil war to indicate failure, not inside Iraq, but on U.S. policy in Iraq. We’re unwilling to fall into that tender trap. We’re not using the term because there are non-Iraqis in the fray and that makes it something different.”

02.Dec.2006 House Conservatives Push Fringe Abortion Measure Instead Of Vital Budget Bills - Nico

Next week, the 109th Congress returns for a final lame-duck session. “In a blend of pique and laziness,” conservatives are choosing to simply ignore their responsibility to complete nine overdue spending bills. Instead, they plan to pass an emergency stop-gap bill — called a “continuing resolution” — that will result in millions in funding cuts to vital programs. CongressDaily explains:

The Social Security Administration has told congressional staff it might have to furlough every employee.
– HUD funding would not keep pace with demand for low-income housing vouchers, meaning “literally thousands of people would be out in the street,” one source said.
– School breakfast and lunch programs would face a $1 billion shortfall, cutting off 1.2 million participants.
– The Veterans Health Administration would have to absorb the $3 billion increase to meet this year’s requirements.

But while spending bills aren’t on the agenda, a “fetal pain abortion bill” — which has no chance of passing becoming law (it will likely pass in the House) and is described as a “last bid for loyalty” from the “base of social conservatives” — will likely get a vote:

The bill, by Rep. Chris Smith, R-N.J., defines a 20-week-old fetus as a “pain-capable unborn child” a highly controversial threshold among scientists. It also directs the Health and Human Service Department to develop a brochure stating “that there is substantial evidence that the process of being killed in an abortion will cause the unborn child pain.”

A report last year by the Journal of the American Medical Association reviewed nearly 2,000 studies on fetal pain +

concluded that “legislative proposals to allow fetal pain relief during abortion are not justified by scientific evidence.” Digg It!

02.Dec.2006 Illegal Immigration Hardliner Mitt Romney Hires Undocumented Workers To Tend His Lawn - Amanda

The Boston Globe reports today that for the past decade, Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R) has employed a landscaping company that relies heavily on undocumented Guatemalan immigrants. The company, Community Lawn Service with a Heart, also tended to the lawn at Romney’s son’s house.

When asked by a reporter about his use of Community Lawn Service with a Heart, Romney said, “Aw, geez,” and walked away. But in the past, Romney has been a vocal hardline critic of illegal immigration:

You have to have a wall or a fence or electronic surveillance. And you have to have a tamper-proof document to make sure that people who are here are aliens are identified and registered + people can not hire them unless they’re here legally .” [Fox News, 9/19/06]

Governor Mitt Romney is seeking an agreement with federal authorities that would allow Massachusetts state troopers to arrest undocumented immigrants for being in the country illegally. … “It’s one more thing you can do to make this a less attractive place for illegal aliens to come to work ,” said Romney. [Boston Globe, 6/21/06]

02.Dec.2006 Rice Falsely Claims That Iraqis Don’t Believe They Are In A Civil War - Judd

Last night on CBS, Katie Couric asked Condoleezza Rice if she believes “the civil war in Iraq is likely to deteriorate significantly over the next few months.” Rice responded that Iraq is not a civil war because “the Iraqis don’t see it that way.” Rice added, “it really doesn’t help to speak about their circumstance as a civil war, in terms that they don’t speak about their circumstances.” Watch the interview:

Actually, top Iraqi military officials believe Iraq is in a civil war. From McClatchy, 8/04/06:

This is a civil war ,” said a senior adviser to the commander of the Iraqi Army’s 6th Division, which oversees much of Baghdad.

The problem between Sunnis and Shiites is a religious one + it gets worse every time they attack each other’s mosques,” said the adviser, who gave only his rank and first name, Col. Ahmed, because of security concerns. “Iraq is now caught in hell.”

Former Iraqi Prime Minister Allawi says Iraq is in a civil war. From the BBC, 3/19/06:

It is unfortunate that we are in civil war. We are losing each day as an average 50 to 60 people throughout the country, if not more.

If this is not civil war, then God knows what civil war is.

Average Iraqis appear to share this view:

The top U.S. military commander for the Middle East, Gen. John Abizaid, told Congress on Thursday that the violence in Baghdad “is probably as bad as I have ever seen it,” and went on to say that the country could be headed toward civil war.

Nearly all of the dozen Iraqis who work for McClatchy Newspapers’ Baghdad bureau — evenly split between Shiite and Sunni Muslims — reached that conclusion long ago.

Their observations have trickled out day by day in the scores of conversations colleagues have with one another about their lives and difficulties. Their experiences of the last month reveal a capital city that’s disintegrating into chaos.

Prime Minister Maliki, of course, agrees with the administration that Iraq is not in a civil war. But his beliefs should not be conflated with the entire Iraqi people.

Transcript:

COURIC: According to a study released by the Center for Strategic and International Studies, the civil war in Iraq is likely to deteriorate significantly over the next few months regardless of the actions the Bush Administration may pursue.

RICE: Well, with all due respect to the CSIS, which is a great institution, the Iraqis don’t see it that way and we don’t see it that way. This — the Iraqis see that they have extraordinarily difficult problems. They see that they have sectarian violence. They see that they have to deal with those who are operating outside the law and killing innocent people. But it really doesn’t help to speak about their circumstance as a civil war, in terms that they don’t speak about their circumstances.

December 1, 2006 - Think Progress

As the world commemorates AIDS Day, leading Christian conservatives are pushing Congress to cut U.S. support for President Bush’s AIDS initiative . They are angry over the program’s promotion of condoms and its perceived lack of support for faith-based programs.

Under heavy pressure from Democrats, EPA Administrator Stephen L. Johnson said the agency is abandoning its plans to relax rules forcing companies to annually report their toxic releases .” Sens. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) and Bob Menendez (D-NJ) plan to “introduce a bill next week to block the rest of the planned changes to the Toxics Release Inventory.”

The Bush administration is considering “whether to abandon U.S. reconciliation efforts with Sunni insurgents and instead give priority to Shiites and Kurds.” The proposal, written by outgoing State Department counselor Philip D. Zelikow, “has met serious resistance from both U.S. Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad and military commanders in Iraq.”

In the first revision to the U.S. citizenship test 00.000.20 years, immigrants “will be assessed on their grasp of the nation’s ideals.” But civil rights advocates note that some of the questions are just off the wall,” “unusual,” or “odd.” One sample question requires applicants to know the amount of the federal minimum wage ($5.15/hour).

Exxon wants its tax cuts. “Proposals by congressional Democrats to eliminate oil industry tax breaks and subsidies would set a bad example overseas and discourage new industry investments, Exxon Mobil’s top executive said Thursday.”

The White House opposes plans by European nations to require airlines to curb greenhouse gases, saying it would unfairly disadvantage U.S. carriers. “We are strongly opposed to the imposition of a tax. We think this will violate trade rules,” said James Connaughton, chairman of the White House Council on Environmental Quality.

Paperless electronic voting machines used throughout the country “‘cannot be made secure,’ according to draft recommendations issued this week by a federal agency that advises the U.S. Election Assistance Commission.” The agency recommended an “optical-scan” paper ballot system.

Without notifying the public, federal agents for the past four years have assigned millions of international travelers, including Americans, computer-generated scores rating the risk they pose of being terrorists . … [C]ivil liberties lawyers, congressional aides and even law enforcement officers said they thought this system had been applied only to cargo.”

And finally: “The State Department uses diplomacy to connect and link the objectives and priorities of various countries.” Except on their website. At the State Department’s ‘Web Site and E-Mail Addresses of Embassies,’ the following links are broken, expired or nonexistent: Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Benin, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Denmark, Ecuador, Equatorial Guinea, Fiji, Gabon, Guatemala, Guinea, India, Italy, Korea, Macedonia, Malawi, Malta, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Turkmenistan and Uruguay.”

Today on CNN’s Situation Room, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales was asked if he could think of a single mistake he’s made during his service to President Bush during the last six years. He couldn’t do it.

Gonzales told Wolf Blitzer, “I think that you and I would — I’d have to spend some time thinking about that.” He added, “Obviously I’ve made some recommendations to my client. 02.Dec.2006 ABC’s The Note Decrees ‘Politically, American Involvement In The Iraq War Is Over’ - Faiz

The self-fashioned political swamis at ABC’s political unit write today:

We think it was The Note that once wrote “politically, American involvement in the Iraq war is over.” That is more true today than it was yesterday + it will be even more true next week when the Iraq Study Group dog-and-pony-with-a-purpose turns on the TV lights + even more so when the Democratic majority rules the roost come January.

American political involvement in the Iraq war is over? That may be the conclusion of a publication that does not need to source its opinions, but all evidence indicates that the debate over Iraq will intensify, not wane.

President Bush has claimed the actual American involvement in Iraq will not be over any time soon. “We’re not leaving [Iraq] so long as I’m the president,” he said.

Most congressional Democrats, who were propelled into the majority by an American public tired of “stay the course,” have consolidated behind a plan of a phased withdrawal. Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), on the other hand, is clamoring for a phased escalation with the support of some conservative allies. There have been suggestions that McCain’s plan is being given serious consideration.

But don’t worry yourself with these clashing proposals. The political debate is over.

02.Dec.2006 Plastic Packages Cause Injuries, Revolt - Zonk 106 massysett writes

"Everybody has been frustrated by plastic retail packaging that's nearly impossible to open. New toys and electronic gadgets arrive encased in plastic bubbles. Manufacturers say the packages protect goods and make them look nice, but opening them can be difficult enough to cause injuries that land people in the emergency room. Manufacturers have an appropriate term for the frustration: wrap rage. One man even invented a cutter designed specifically for cracking open plastic clamshells."

Civil UAVs Still A Distant Prospect - Zonk 61 holy_calamity writes

"The aerospace industry has failed to obtain the radio frequencies that would allow the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in civil airspace, New Scientist reports. It will be 2011 before it can even begin to lobby for space on the radio spectrum. What's more, no national aviation authority in the world will allow civil UAVs without a system for avoiding other aircraft. And no firm has even started development of one. Has the industry cheated us of the benefits of civil UAVs by focussing on the demands of the military?" From the article: "On the brighter side, last week the UN's International Civil Aviation Organization, based in Montreal, Canada, said its navigation experts would meet in early 2007 to consider regulations for UAVs in civil airspace. That could be a step towards internationally agreed rules for how UAVs should operate. Even if the UN body makes rapid progress, however, it will be meaningless unless the industry can obtain the necessary frequencies to control the planes and feed images and other sensor data back to base."

FCC Sued to Allow Cell Phone Jammers - Zonk 219 stevew writes

"A small company in Florida is trying to take on the FCC in an attempt to make their Cell phone jamming product legal. Their main argument seems to be that the Communications act of 1934 conflicts with the HomeLand Security Act — so the Communications act has to go." From the article: "Local and state law enforcement agencies, which would be the first responders to a terrorist attack here at home, are prohibited by law from obtaining such gear. 'It just doesn't make much sense that the FBI can use this equipment, but that the local and state governments, which the Homeland Security Act has acknowledged as being an important part of combating terrorism, cannot,' said Howard Melamed, chief executive of CellAntenna.

From the article: "Scientists have combined two molecules that occur naturally in blood to engineer a molecular complex that uses solar energy to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. This molecular complex can use energy from the sun to create hydrogen gas, providing an alternative to electrolysis, the method typically used to split water into its constituent parts. They found 'traces of a rapid chemical reaction which did not allow natural crystallization.

The reaction would be inexplicable if the stones were quarried, but perfectly comprehensible if one accepts that they were cast like concrete.'"

U.S. Warns of Possible Cyber Biz Attack - Zonk 145 mikesd81 writes

"The AP has an article about a possible attack against the New York Stock Exchange via the internet by a radical muslim group. The notice was issued to the U.S. cybersecurity industry after officials saw a posting on a 'Jihadist Web site' calling for an attack on U.S. Internet-based stock market and banking sites in December, said Homeland Security Department spokesman Russ Knocke. Knocke has said: 'There is no information corroborating the threat and that the alert was issued as a routine matter and out of an abundance of caution.' There is no immediate threat to our homeland at this time. The attacks were to be conducted in December, 'until the infidel new year,' the site said, according to a U.S. government translation. It called for attackers to use viruses that can penetrate Internet sites and destroy data stored there.

Spokespeople for the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq declined to comment on the cyber-terror threat."

MPAA Kills California Anti-Pretexting Bill - Zonk 215 IAmTheDave writes

"A California anti-pretexting bill that got unanimous support in the state senate with a vote of 30-0 was struck down after heavy last-minute lobbying by the MPAA. The bill aimed to make deceptive 'pretexting' (lying) to gain personal information on another person illegal. The MPAA told legislators 'We need to pose as someone other than who we are to stop illegal downloading,' and thus killed the bill when it came up for a final vote. California passed a much narrower bill that 'bans the use of deceit to obtain telephone calling records + nothing else.' In a final 'think of the children' bid, the Califonia Association of Licensed Investigators also opposed the bill, saying it needed to be able to use pretexting to help find missing children, among other things."

Apple Gene for Red Color Found - CowboyNeal 169 FiReaNGeL writes

"Researchers have located the gene that controls the red color of apples — a discovery that may lead to bright new apple varieties. 'The red color in apple skin is the result of anthocyanins, the natural plant compounds responsible for blue and red colours in many flowers and fruits,' says the leader of the CSIRO. By identifying master genes that were activated by light, they were able to pinpoint the gene that controls the formation of anthocyanins in apples. 'As well as giving apples their rosy red hue, anthocyanins are also antioxidants with healthy attributes, giving us plenty of reasons to study how the biochemical pathway leading to apple color is regulated,' researchers said."

01.Dec.2006 https://www.cannonfire.blogspot.com/ Ela Malek, in case you don't know, is the waitress who served Litvinenko that fateful day. Many believe that the poisoning occurred during that meal, although an alternative theory holds that the hit occurred during an earlier meeting over tea with former Russian Prime Minister Yegor Gaidar. Gaidar became violently ill later.
One of the intriguing aspects of this case is that the victims are also considered suspects...
Larisa Alexandrovna is at least ten parsecs ahead of every other blogger in her investigation of this topic. I would note, though, that one school of thought (which Larisa would probably sneer at) ascribes the hit to Poland. No, really : See here. The following paragraphs have a certain interest: Before Putin moved in to take over Yukos Oil from the Russian criminal syndicates, there were plans to build a Russian-German gas pipeline through Poland. After Poland was taken over by a neo-con team of identical twins Lech and Jaroslaw Kaczynski, who serve as President and Prime Minister, respectively, Poland not only began to conduct a witch hunt against ex-Communists but also became a base of operations for the anti-Putin Russian-Israeli exiled gangsters and oligarchs.
Named as Defense Minister was former American Enterprise Institute resident scholar Radek Sikorski, who also happens to be married to Washington Post editorial board member and leading neo-con journalist Anne Applebaum, also a leading critic of Putin (along with a number of so-called "liberals," including Clinton ambassador to the UN Richard Holbrooke).
After Putin decided, along with former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, to bypass Poland and build the Russo-German pipeline under the Baltic Sea, Sikorski unleashed a barrage against Russia and Germany. He likened the pipeline deal to the 1939 Molotov-Ribbentrop Agreement that carved up Eastern Europe, including Poland, between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. Sikorski asked German Chancellor Angela Merkel to cancel the pipeline deal but she refused.
We now know that Litvinenko was working on unspecified "energy issues" in London. We also know he has been described as a Russian-Israeli "double agent" and was reported to have transferred classified Russian documents in Yukos to a Russian-Israeli exiled oligarch in Tel Aviv. Double agents are always in danger from the party they are working against. Those persuaded by this line of thought may cast a suspicious glance toward Ela, who is of Polish descent. Personally, I am certain that she is innocent. She now fears that she too has been exposed to the toxin. In her words: One of my good friends who regularly served Mr Litvinenko has a weird rash all over her face which won’t go even with antibiotics. She is scared to death — we all are.
And my mum is absolutely panic-stricken. She calls me from Poland every day to make sure I’m still OK. It is awful waiting for the hospital results. I am just praying it will be all right. Ela insists that the kitchen staff played no role in this affair.
The other suspect would be his lunchtime companion Mario Scaramella, a very spooky fellow "who runs an organisation which tracks nuclear waste." Scaramella, who had his fingers in many different pies, was part of the Mitrokhin Commission which investigated KGB influence in Italy. He is said to have gone into hiding.
Larisa's the go-to writer on this story. I can only add one small observation.
Radioactive poisoning is no new trend in the spy trade. Many years ago, an exceptionally disreputable source told me that an American spook murdered a troublesome broadcaster using a radioactive needle. The needle (I was told) came sheathed in a lead-lined box, rigged to shoot-out its toxic payload at the push of a button. The preferred tactic is to hide the needle within a mattress or chair known to be used habitually by the victim.
I should emphasize that this claim came to me second-hand from a source no-one in his right mind would consider trustworthy. But years after I heard this story, I read a passage in a book describing just such a device. Trouble is, I cannot recall where I read about the lead box weapon. Perhaps one of my readers recalls having encountered the same passage...?
I mention this injector-set business in order to float the notion that the polonium may not have been ingested. Needles can be exceptionally fine + only a small amount of this substance is lethal. Perhaps it was injected . Perhaps a mere scratch proved deadly.
I wonder if the cops checked the victim's mattress?
Consider the notion. Sleep on it.
