This Raw Story article on the upcoming CIA "family jewels" document dump is misleading.
The article summarizes a document which was actually released some years back, pursuant to the
00.000.1992 -JFK Assassination Records Collections Act of -- a noble piece of legislation, for which you may thank Bill Clinton + Oliver Stone.
The actual "Jewels" document -- a 693 page whopper -- has not yet been released. (At least I was not able to find it at the national Security Archives web page here.)

One of the key framers of the war paradigm (in which the president in his wartime capacity as commander in chief makes and enforces laws as he sees fit, overriding the constitutional system of checks and balances), who a year ago was arguing vehemently for pushing its boundaries, confesses that he has abandoned his belief in the whole doctrine, though he refuses to say so publicly.
If he were to speak up, given his seminal role in formulating the policy and his stature among the Federalist Society cadres that run it, his rejection would have a shattering impact, far more than political philosopher Francis Fukuyama's denunciation of the neoconservatism he formerly embraced. But this figure remains careful to disclose his disillusionment with his own handiwork only in off-the-record conversations.
Yet another Bush legal official, even now at the commanding heights of power, admits that the administration's policies are largely discredited.
In its defense, he says without a hint of irony or sarcasm, "Not everything we've done has been illegal."
He adds, "Not everything has been ultra vires" -- a legal term referring to actions beyond the law. Can we attach a couple of names to these two characters? Permalink

Azima, an Iranian whose family was close to the Shah, owns a cargo airline in Miami that delivered whatever Iran Contra swag El-Batrawi's cargo airline left behind.
Azima's Global International Ah (executive vice-president Mansour Rasnavad) was part of Oliver North's logistical network shipping arms—including a shipment of 23 tons of TOW missiles to Iran—to the Ayatollah.

which was prominently involved in the activities of former CIA agent Edwin Wilson.
It doesn't get any more Iran Contra-y than that.
In fact, their company was once even cited for chartering a Boeing 707 to the PLO, who used it to ship a load of weapons to the Sandinistas.
There were, presumably, red faces all around.
Still, the level of international intrigue this caper attests to marks them as spooks extraordinaire.” (Idem.)
Remember Argyle Equities, the Texas investment firm with the big stake in Sky Way Aircraft's DC9 Cocaine One? This is all just a coincidence.” (Idem.)
In part, this cover-up may be due to the fact that Atta was supposed to have spent time in Prague [Czech Republic] meeting with representatives of Saddam Hussein’s intelligence service. This disinformation was a key part of the administration’s rationalization for invading Iraq. For more about this, see https://www.madcowprod.com/10042006.html .

"The unrest in Diwaniya, mirrored in Nasiriya to the south, reflects the emergence of a poisonous political landscape in which competing Shiite groups no longer look to the political system to allocate power."
"The New Yorker has a book review describing our common misunderstanding of the value of technology and its ultimate uses. The reviewer notes that the way we think about technology tends to ignore older objects of technology. Quoting: '[W]hen we do consider technology in historical terms we customarily see it as a driving force of progress: every so often... an innovation — the steam engine, electricity, computers — brings a new age into being. In "The Shock of the Old: Technology and Global History Since 1900", by David Edgerton, a well-known British historian of modern military and industrial technology, offers a vigorous assault on this narrative. He thinks that traditional ways of understanding technology, technological change + the role of technology in our lives, have been severely distorted by what he calls "the innovation-centric account" of technology.'" Money quote: "Seen in this light, my kitchen is a technological palimpsest."
"On top of its recently announced plan to reduce flight delays, Federal Aviation Administration officials today launched what they hope will be pan U.S. and European Union joint action plan to cut greenhouse gas emissions from aircraft. Specifically the group announced the Atlantic Interoperability Initiative to Reduce Emissions or AIRE — the first large-scale environmental plan aimed at uniting aviation players from both sides of the Atlantic."
"According to an Air Force Times article, the famed Lockheed Martin 'Skunk Works' may be hard at work on a new supersonic spy plane (with 'artist concept') for the U.S. military, to replace the SR-71 'Blackbird' retired a decade ago. Dubbed by some the SR-72, the jet would be unmanned and travel at about 4, 000 MPH at as much as 100, 000 feet, with 'transcontinental' range. Some have speculated that new high-speed spy planes could be a U.S. response to anti-satellite weapons deployed by China, in order to preserve reconnaissance capabilities in the event of a loss of satellite coverage. Neither the Air Force nor Lockheed Martin would comment on the program, or lack thereof." Read more of this story at Slashdot.
Physicists from Case Western Reserve University claim to have cracked the black hole information loss paradox that has puzzled physicists for the past 40 years.
"The physicists are quick to assure astronomers and astrophysicists that what is observed in gravity pulling masses together still holds true, but what is controversial about the new finding is that 'from an external viewer's point it takes an infinite amount of time to form an event horizon + that the clock for the objects falling into the black hole appears to slow down to zero,' said Krauss, director of Case's Center for Education and Research in Cosmology." “The current administration’s treatment of prisoners has repeatedly dishonored our nation’s commitment to the rule of law and justice, ” writes Episcopal priest Charles Hoffacker. Americans believe that law puts us on the side of justice. But in a “war on terror” the rule of law has been forsaken for a rule of emergency. This panic-infused logic has led many Americans to accept and justify torture, the arrest of terror suspects without charge + counter-population warfare.
New evidence unearthed by House Democrats establishes that White House political adviser Karl Rove and many of his colleagues used Republican National Committee e-mail accounts for official business -- even though White House policy is clear that doing so is a violation of the Presidential Records Act.
How did such casual lawbreaking come to be so widespread? And why was it tolerated? Those are among the questions the White House has yet to answer satisfactorily.
During all bad economic times, any ethnic or religious minority who has lots of money is looted. This happened to more than one ancestor of mine. Today, the New York Times has an editorial counseling the Palestinian people to accept their fate--to be shoved into ever-smaller gehttos---so the Jews may exploit and colonize the Holy Land in peace. There are some Palestinians who have accepted this fate only they are being deluded, the Zionist plan calls for them to be totally eliminated and replaced by European and American Jews. This is ethnic cleansing of the poor but it is intimately connected to ethnic cleansing of the rich...many of whom are Jews.

Google "Rashid Rauf - mastermind".
On the first page of results you will find CBS, the BBC, the Times, Guardian and Mail all describing Rauf last summer, on security service or police briefing, as the "Mastermind" behind the "Liquid terror bomb plot".
So the fact that a Pakistani court has found there is no evidence of terrorism against him cannot be lightly dismissed by the cheerleaders of the plot story.
Rashid Rauf still faces other charges, including forgery + what is touted as possession of explosives, although what he actually possessed was hydrogen peroxide, which is not explosive.
As hydrogen peroxide is readily obtainable without limitation from any chemist or hardware store in the UK, why you would source it in Pakistan to blow up jets in Britain was never very convincing.
The Pakistani court perhaps felt so too.
Rashid Rauf has much to answer. He is still wanted in the UK over the murder of his uncle some years ago - a crime which, like the alleged forgery, had no apparent terrorist link. None of which adds to the credibility of the evidence he allegedly gave the Pakistani intelligence services about the liquid bomb plot in the UK.
A second and simultaneous development is even more compelling evidence that this massive scare was, as I said at the time, "More propaganda than plot".
Thames Valley police have given up after five months scouring the woods near High Wycombe where the bomb materials were allegedly hidden. They told the Home Office on 12 December that they would only continue if the government were prepared to meet the costs; they wished to get back to devoting their resources to real crimes, like armed robbery and burglary.
Remember this was a plot described by the authorities as "Mass murder on an unimaginable scale" and "Bigger than 9/11". There have been instances in the UK of hundreds of police officers deployed for years to find an individual murderer. If the police really believed they were dealing with an effort at "Mass murder on an unimaginable scale", would they be calling off the search after five months? No.
Which brings us to the lies that have been told - one of which concerns this search. An anonymous police source tipped off the media early on that they had discovered a "Suitcase" containing "bomb-making materials". This has recently been described to me by a security service source as "A lot of rubbish from someone's garage dumped in the woods". You could indeed cannibalise bits of old wire, clocks and car parts to form part of a bomb - perhaps you could enclose it in the old suitcase. But have they found stuff that is exclusively concerned with causing explosions, like detonators, explosives or those famous liquid chemicals? No, they haven't found any.
Wycombe Woods, like the sands of Iraq, have failed to yield up the advertised WMD.
The other "evidence" that the police announced they had found consisted of wills (with the implication they were made by suicide bombers) and a map of Afghanistan. It turns out that the wills were made in the early 90s by volunteers going off to fight the Serbs in Bosnia - they had been left with the now deceased uncle of one of those arrested. The map of Afghanistan had been copied out by an eleven year old boy. All of which is well known to the UK media, but none of which has been reported for fear of prejudicing the trial. I am at a complete loss to understand why it does not prejudice the trial for police to announce in a blaze of worldwide front page publicity that they have found bomb-making materials, wills and maps. Only if you contradict the police is that prejudicial. Can anyone explain why?
While the arrest of 26 people in connection with the plot was also massively publicised, the gradual release of many of them has again gone virtually unreported. For example on 31 October a judge released two brothers from Chingford commenting that the police had produced no credible evidence against them. Charges against others have been downgraded, so that those now accused of plotting to commit explosions are less than the ten planes the police claimed they planned to blow up in suicide attacks.
Five British newspapers had to pay damages to a Birmingham man they accused, on security service briefing, of being part of the plot. Only the Guardian had the grace to publish the fact and print a retraction.
A final fact to ponder. Despite naming him as the "mastermind" behind somethng "bigger than 9/11", the British government made no attempt to extradite Rashid Rauf on charges of terrorism. That is not difficult to do - the Pakistani authorities have handed over scores of terrorist suspects to the US, many into the extraordinary rendition process + on average the procedure is astonishingly quick - less than a week and they are out of the country. But the British security services, who placed so much weight on intelligence from Rashid Rauf, were extraordinarily coy about getting him here where his evidence could be properly scrutinised by a British court. However MI5 were greatly embarassed by Birmingham police, who insisted on pointing out that Rauf was wanted in the UK over the alleged murder of his uncle in Birmingham. Now he was in custody in Pakistan, shouldn't we extradite him? So eventually an extradition request over that murder was formally submitted - but not pursued with real energy or effort. There remains no sign that we will see Rauf in the UK.
I still do not rule out that there was a germ of a terror plot at the heart of this investigation. We can speculate about agents provocateurs and security service penetration, both British and Pakistani, but still there might have been genuine terrorists involved. But the incredible disruption to the travelling public, the War on Shampoo + the "Bigger than 9/11" hype is unravelling.
You won't read that in the newspapers.
11.Jun.2007 while traveling with her 19-month-old toddler. . .
The incident started when Monica, who left the Secret Service to raise a family, was stopped while going through airport security because there was water in her son's sippy cup.
The sippy cup was seized by TSA.
Monica wanted the cup back because the sippy cup was the only way her son would drink -- and it was a long flight between Washington, DC and Reno, Nevada where she was going for a family reunion.
If you've ever had a toddler you understand about sippy cups.

House investigators have learned that over the objections of the National Archives, Vice President Cheney exempted his office from a presidential executive order designed to safeguard classified national security information.
According to a letter from House oversight chairman Henry Waxman (D-CA):
00.000.2003 -Since- Cheney’s office has failed to provide data on its classification and declassification activities as required by Executive Order 12958, which President Bush has amended and endorsed.
00.000.2004 Cheney’s office specifically intervened to block an on-site inspection by the Information Security Oversight Office (ISOO), which is a requirement of the executive order.
The Office of the Vice President has asserted that it is not an “entity within the executive branch” and hence is not subject to presidential executive orders.
“To my knowledge, this was the first time in the nearly 30-year history of the Information Security Oversight Office that a request for access to conduct a security inspection was denied by a White House office.”
To resolve the matter, the ISOO wrote Cheney’s chief of staff David Addington on two separate occasions
in summer 2006, disputing the claims made by Cheney’s office and requesting that the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel settle the matter.
Cheney’s office ignored both letters.
00.Jan.2007 -Finally-the ISOO directly asked Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to resolve whether the executive order applies to Cheney’s office.
In response, Cheney’s office has retaliated.
It has requested changes in the executive order that would abolish the ISOO and eliminate the ability of the National Archives to appeal disputes to the Attorney General.
In his letter to Cheney, Waxman writes, “I question both the legality and the wisdom of your actions.”
Specifically citing reports that Cheney personally instructed Scooter Libby to disclose classified national security information to former New York Times reporter Judith Miller,
Waxman says it would be “particularly irresponsible” to give an office “with your history of security breaches” an exemption.
Newsday reported this week that former mayor Rudy Giuliani stepped down from the Iraq Study Group after chairman James Baker gave “him a stark choice: either attend the meetings or quit.”
Baker was upset that despite serving on the panel for two months, Giuliani had failed to attend a single official meeting of the group.
According to his recently released financial disclosure forms, Giuliani made eight paid speeches, each on a different day, during the 23 days the Iraq Study Group met.
What hasn’t been noted is that two of the eight speeches were for an organization called Life Win, Inc. (Get Motivated Seminars).
What is a “Get Motivated” seminar? According to a 2003 report in the St. Petersburg Times, a Get Motivated seminar is:
A daylong program infused with Christianity, patriotism and pumping music suitable for aerobics .
Many among the roster of speakers urged the audience of about 25, 000 to find their inner power — and to sign up for more seminars and books.
At the seminars, Rudy would take the stage to Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York” with red, white and blue confetti swirling around his head.
He would then launch into a speech using the attack and the aftermath of 9/11 to illustrate his “six principles of leadership.”
For his two appearances during the Iraq Study Group meetings alone, Giuliani pulled in a combined gross fee of $200, 000.
Giuliani’s camp has falsely claimed that he left the ISG because he “didn’t want the group’s work to become a political football” for his nascent presidential campaign.
In reality it appears he just didn’t want to turn down more opportunities for profit.
Revealing further details about the efforts of then acting Assistant Attorney General Bradley Schlozman to politicize the Justice Department’s civil rights division, the Washington Post reports Schlozman “asked a supervisor if a career lawyer who had voted for Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), a onetime political rival of President Bush, could still be trusted.”
Former U.S. Attorney Tom Heffelfinger will testify today before the Senate Indian Affairs committee in Washington, “where he has become embroiled” in the scandal over the attorney firings. Reports suggest Heffelfinger may have been targeted for removal by the Justice Department because of his role in protecting the rights of Native American voters.

McClatchy’s military analyst Joseph Galloway writes:
The president and his men + Rumsfeld and his, happily put Abu Ghraib behind them and went merrily along knowing that the network of secret CIA prisons where high-value prisoners were subjected to extreme interrogation techniques was still secret.
The examples made of Army Chief of Staff Gen. Eric K. Shinseki and Gen. Taguba weren’t lost on military commanders in the field or at home: If you dare speak truth to power in this administration, your career is toast + any hopes you have of landing a cushy job in one of the defense industry behemoths are finished.
It’s long past time for Congress to reopen the matter of who’s really responsible for Abu Ghraib and let the chips fall where they may - even if that means they pile up around the retirement home of a former secretary of defense or the gates of the White House itself.
“The D.C. Circuit Court on Wednesday, after pondering the issue for more than two months, on Wednesday refused to delay any longer putting into effect its decision that Guantanamo Bay detainees have lost all rights to pursue habeas challenges to their prolonged imprisonment. In a brief order, the panel that ruled against the detainees on Feb. 20 formally denied a request filed in April by detainees’ lawyers not to issue the mandate and to hold the cases on its docket for several more months.”
[T]he Justice Department appears likely to act quickly to get 12 District Court judges in Washington to dismiss habeas challenges by scores of detainees + also to wipe out so-called “protective orders” that assure the detainees’ lawyers access to their clients at Guantanamo and access to information the military may use to justify continuing to hold them.
Today, President Bush issued the third veto of his presidency on legislation expanding funding for embryonic stem cell research, which recently passed Congress with a bipartisan, overwhelming majority.
Faced with the opposition of nearly two-thirds of Americans, White House spokesperson Tony Snow today attempted to spin the veto as a positive development. Snow claimed that Bush has a “unique and unprecedented role” in supporting stem cell research + attacked critics for “misstating” the administration’s policies, claiming that Bush was in fact “putting science before ideology.”
In an attempt to drum up support for less potent alternatives to embryonic stem cell research, Snow falsely characterized the science behind stem cell research, claiming scientists “are not even entirely sure about what the possible benefits of embryonic stem cells [are].” Watch it:
Snow’s claim doesn’t pass the laugh test. Contrary to what Snow says, Bush has held a backwards and overly ideological perspective on scientific research.
00.000.2001 Bush neutered the ability of scientists to engage in stem cell research by curbing funding for new embryonic lines.
00.000.2006 Bush vetoed legislation lifting those restrictions.
Even Bush’s top scientists have criticized him for these actions.
Currently, “not a single scientist who is pursuing research on any kind of cell has said that research involving embryonic stem cells should stop.”
And scientists have seen potential treatments from embryonic stem cell research for a variety of ailments.
The only thing stopping federally-funded stem cell research from progressing is the White House’s insistence on putting right-wing ideology ahead of science.

“President Bush has talked with British Prime Minister Tony Blair about taking a role as a Middle East peace envoy after he leaves office next week, ” the Associated Press reports. On Monday, Blair “strongly defended intervening in Iraq” in a “robust farewell performance” before one of parliament’s top panels.
This morning, during an interview with First Lady Laura Bush, highlighted World Refugee Day and the effect that the war in Iraq has had on the number of refugees around the world. reported Iraqis “who were helping the Americans or even helping their own country” are now targeted and must seek “refuge in other nations, as well as the United States.”
Bush responded saying, “Obviously we’re especially concerned about the Iraqi refugees.” She added, “We welcome many of those refugees, both from Iraq and Afghanistan into the United States.”
The First Lady is greatly exaggerating the administration’s policy.
As the Baltimore Sun notes today, “as of May, only 69 Iraqis had entered the United States” this fiscal year.
21.Jun.2007 – 2003 -since the invasion of Iraq in- In total, the United States has “resettled fewer than 500 Iraqi refugees” .
Meanwhile, the situation in Iraq has become “the world’s fastest-growing refugee crisis.” Syria alone is hosting “1.4 million Iraqi ‘guests’” and Iraqi refugees have become increasingly desperate, some even resorting to prostitution. In total, there are more than two million Iraqi refugees.

On Monday, Sens. Edward Kennedy (D-MA) and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) called for the Justice Department to investigate allegations of “caging” surrounding former U.S. attorney Tim Griffin. Today, both Arkansas Sens. The Center for American Progress and Free Press today released the first-of-its-kind statistical analysis of the political make-up of talk radio in the United States. It confirms that talk radio, one of the most widely used media formats in America, is dominated almost exclusively by conservatives.
The new report — entitled “The Structural Imbalance of Political Talk Radio” — raises serious questions about whether the companies licensed to broadcast over the public radio airwaves are serving the listening needs of all Americans.
While progressive talk is making inroads on commercial stations, right-wing talk reigns supreme on America’s airwaves. Some key findings:
– In the spring of 2007, of the 257 news/talk stations owned by the top five commercial station owners, 91 % of the total weekday talk radio programming was conservative + only 9 % was progressive.
– Each weekday, 2, 570 hours and 15 minutes of conservative talk are broadcast on these stations compared to 254 hours of progressive talk — 10 times as much conservative talk as progressive talk.
– 76 % of the news/talk programming in the top 10 radio markets is conservative, while 24 % is progressive.
Two common myths are frequently offered to explain the imbalance of talk radio: 1) the 1987 repeal of the Fairness Doctrine (which required broadcasters to devote airtime to contrasting views) + 2) simple consumer demand. Each of these fails to adequately explain the root cause of the problem. The report explains:
Our conclusion is that the gap between conservative and progressive talk radio is the result of multiple structural problems in the U.S. regulatory system, particularly the complete breakdown of the public trustee concept of broadcast, the elimination of clear public interest requirements for broadcasting + the relaxation of ownership rules including the requirement of local participation in management. […]
Ultimately, these results suggest that increasing ownership diversity, both in terms of the race/ethnicity and gender of owners, as well as the number of independent local owners, will lead to more diverse programming, more choices for listeners + more owners who are responsive to their local communities and serve the public interest.
Along with other ideas, the report recommends that national radio ownership not be allowed to exceed 5 % of the total number of AM and FM broadcast stations + local ownership should not exceed more than 10 % of the total commercial radio stations in a given market.
Read the full report here.
For the second time, President Bush has vetoed popular legislation to expand federal funding for embryonic stem cell research. To win some political cover, Bush also will issue an executive order “intended to encourage scientific advances in regenerative medicine.” But as the New York Times notes, “the effort appears largely symbolic — there is no money attached — and some scientists were instantly skeptical.”
“The New York Times is currently undertaking a major news investigation, led by managing editor Jill Abramson, into News Corp.’s business dealings throughout the world, according to a source with knowledge of the project.” Abramson told the New York Observer she is leading “an investigative project for the next month” + that it “involves a group of domestic and foreign reporters, but I obviously can’t tell you what it is.”
The current issue of Commentary magazine — “widely regarded as the leading outlet for neoconservative writing” — features a controversial cover story by Norman Podhoretz titled “The Case For Bombing Iran.”
Podhoretz’s article appeals to President Bush, “a man who knows evil when he sees it” and who has been “battered more mercilessly and with less justification than any other in living memory, ” to carry out military strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities. U.S. diplomats are now pointing to the essay to pressure foreign diplomats to increase pressure on Iran.
In a new interview, Podhoretz was asked to comment on the possible fallout of the military strikes he advocates. “Well, if we were to bomb the Iranians as I hope and pray we will, ” Podhoretz says, “we’ll unleash a wave of anti-Americanism all over the world that will make the anti-Americanism we’ve experienced so far look like a lovefest.” Watch it (6:20):
Podhoretz qualified his statement about anti-Americanism, saying it was only a “worst case scenario.
” It’s “entirely possible, ” he claimed, that “many countries, particularly in the Middle East” would “at least secretly applaud us.”
But even global anti-Americanism is worth it, he argues, to slow Iran’s nuclear program “for five or 10 years or more.”
In fact, American Progress senior fellow Joseph Cirincione has argued that such a strike “would not, as is often said, delay the Iranian program.
It would almost certainly speed it up. That is what happened
00.000.1981 -when the Israelis struck at the Iraq program .” Digg It! Transcript: (more…)

Last night on Special Edition, the “Fox News All-Stars, ” used this week’s Take Back America conference as an oppurtunity to bash progressive bloggers.
Describing bloggers as “a pox, ” Roll Call editor Mort Kondracke compared them to right-wing talk radio, charging that they are preventing “American problems” from being solved:
KONDRAKE: They are the leftward pressure on the Democratic Party that the right-wing talk show hosts are on the Republican party.
And between the two of them they manage to polarize even further an already polarized politics, making it increasingly difficult to get any American problems solved, like health care, or the war in Iraq, or sensible terrorism policy.
NPR’s Mara Liasson also compared bloggers to the Swift Boat Veterans For Truth because “that was on the internet too.”
Washington Post columnist Charles Krauthammer added that conservative blogs are “more analytical and restrained” while “the more liberal blogs are a lot more pungent and profane.” Watch the entire segment:
