Die Häufigkeit heftiger Niederschläge hat zugenommen. Klima-Rekonstruktionen besagen, dass die Temperaturen der vergangenen 50 Jahre sehr wahrscheinlich höher waren als jemals zuvor in den vergangenen 1300 Jahren. Die schneebedeckte Fläche hat seit 1980 um etwa 5 % abgenommen. Die Gletscher schmelzen weltweit und lassen die Weltmeere derzeit um 0,8 Millimeter pro Jahr zusätzlich steigen. Das Meereis in der Arktis ist seit 1978 im Jahresmittel um acht % zurückgegangen und im Sommer um 22 %. In der Antarktis ist dagegen kein Rückgang zu beobachten. Neben dem Meereis geht auch das Festlandeis in Grönland und der Antarktis zurück: Die Schmelze und Gletscherabbrüche und tragen 0,4 Millimeter pro Jahr zum Meeresspiegelanstieg bei. Die Temperaturen in den oberen Schichten des Permafrostsbodens sind seit 1980 um drei Grad gestiegen, die Fläche des saisonal gefrorenen Bodens hat seit 1900 um sieben % abgenommen, im Frühling sogar um 15 %. Die Ozeane sind im globalen Mittel wärmer geworden, bis in Tiefen von 3000 Meter. Diese Erwärmung trägt durch die Ausdehnung des Wassers ebenfalls zum Anstieg des Meeresspiegels bei. Der Meeresspiegel ist seit 1993 durchschnittlich um etwa drei Millimeter pro Jahr gestiegen, im 20. Jahrhundert um 17 Zentimeter. Mehr als die Hälfte davon geht auf die thermische Ausdehnung des Ozeans zurück, etwa 25 % auf das Abschmelzen der Gebirgsgletscher und rund 15 % durch das Abschmelzen der Eisschilde. Selbst wenn alle CO2-Emissionen sofort gestoppt würden, stiege die Temperatur noch um weitere 0,6 Grad, da das Klimasystem nur sehr träge reagiert, heißt es im IPCC-Bericht. Der Meeresspiegel werde auch dann noch "über viele Jahrhunderte" steigen. Sollte die Erwärmung aber deutlich über drei Grad bis zum Jahr 2100 liegen, würde das Festlandeis Grönlands vollständig abschmelzen - mit wahrscheinlich katastrophalen Folgen für die Küstengebiete der Welt.
