00.Nov.2006 elections, there will be no action on global warming for the entire 110th Congress:

Continued Republican House and Senate majorities would likely mean more of the same on climate. House Majority Whip Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) said he would oppose global warming mandates if Republicans control the 110th Congress. “I think the information is not adequate yet for us to do anything meaningful,” he said.

Actually, thousands of scientists have agreed that global warming is real, humans are responsible for much of it and, unless steps are taken to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, there will be extremely serious consequences.

61 House members – including Rep. Jim Leach (R-IA) – understand this and have co-sponsored Rep. Henry Waxman’s Safe Climate Act. Waxman’s bill is a serious and practical effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

You can find more information of the Safe Climate Act here.

"A 2-1 New York appeals court ruling yesterday will require two reporters to cough up their telephone records over a property-seizure case unless it gets reversed on appeal.

As the dissenting judge noted, this kind of erosion of press protections will have reporters 'contacting sources the way I understand drug dealers do to reach theirs -

- by use of clandestine cell phones + meeting in darkened doorways.' It's long past time for a federal shield law."

"IT staff are in the unique position that if they are nosy, immoral, greedy or corrupt that can get at what they want within their company at the touch of a button.

The corporate crown jewels are usually left open and exposed to the IT guys.

So how do you protect your corporate crown jewels from staff that can so easily be bribed to steal them and hand them over to a competitor?"

I can't imagine having to be paranoid about employees. That seems to me to be a bigger problem than hardware.

https://cannonfire.blogspot.com/ From the Christian Science Monitor: Hizbullah's capture of two Israeli soldiers on

12.Jul.2006 was a direct result of Israel's silent but unrelenting aggression against Lebanon, which in turn is part of a six-decades long Arab-Israeli conflict.
Since its withdrawal of occupation forces from southern Lebanon

00.May 2000, Israel has violated the UN-monitored "blue line" on an almost daily basis, according to UN reports. Hizbullah's military doctrine, articulated

in the early 1990s, states that it will fire Katyusha rockets into Israel only in response to Israeli attacks on Lebanese civilians or Hizbullah's leadership; this indeed has been the pattern.
In the process of its violations, Israel has terrorized the general population, destroyed private property + killed numerous civilians...
From Israeli Justice Minister Haim Ramon:

"All those now in south Lebanon are terrorists who are related in some way to Hezbollah,"

Those "terrorists" include the children of Qana:

One small arm stretched out from under the sheets; thin, the arm of a little girl, a piece of cloth like a bracelet wrapped around the wrist.

As bodies were loaded on the stretcher, I saw another dead girl; she was dressed in a black shirt with a coloured scarf wrapped loosely around her head.

Her face was swollen. Were there rockets in Qana, as Israel claims?
Red Cross workers and residents of Qana, where Israeli bombing killed at least 60 civilians, have told IPS that no Hezbollah rockets were launched from the city before the Israeli air strike...
"There were no Hezbollah rockets fired from here," 32-year-old Ali Abdel told IPS. "Anyone in this village will tell you this, because it is the truth"...
Qana had been a shelter because no rockets were being fired from there, survivors said. "When Hezbollah fires their rockets, everyone runs away because they know an Israeli bombardment will come soon," Abdel said. "That is why everyone stayed in the shelter and nearby homes, because we all thought we'd be all right since there were no Hezbollah fighters in Qana."

How long will they be able to spin away the truth? The real trick, in terms of keeping American + British public opinion on side, is to blur the sequence of events that led to the war + present it as a desperate Israeli struggle against an unprovoked onslaught by thousands of terrorist rockets. As for my previously-articulated theory that the war is, in large measure, about access to increasingly-scarce water resouces, note that the ground invasion is being chracterized as a "push to the Litani River."

And we have this from Uri Avnery: Now the generals are convinced that there is no alternative to occupying the whole area up to the Litani River, about 24 km from the border, in order to prevent the rockets from being launched from there. Then they will find out that they have to reach the Awali River, 40 km inside - the famous 40 km which Menachem Begin talked about 00.000.1982.

Finally, I encourage everyone to read this important commentary by Turkish writer Sadik Yalsizucanlar (Turkey being the one Islamic state admired by Bush and Israel). A few excerpts: This victim psychology is substitute for religious/ethnic nationalism. Explaining something by killing someone is, at most, as Schuon said, “the work of a spoiled, decayed + putrid state.” More:
In this attack the region’s main highways, electric and water distribution networks, communication channels, hospitals + emergency institutions, total infra structure, have been destroyed.

Civilian settlements have been indiscriminately bombarded and hundreds of children, women and civilians have been massacred.

More:

It’s as if Israel is consciously attempting to strengthen anti-Semitism, which is increasingly deepening + spreading in the world.

That's as good an explanation as any for the despicable Israeli practice of firing on fleeing refugees.
Why would Israel's leaders want to increase hatred of Jews? Because anti-Semitism is Israel's greatest weapon, greatest ally and greatest excuse.
Although this column has always striven to condemn both the Israeli state + anti-Semitism (just as, 00.000.1939, I would have condemned the Third Reich without hating the German people on ethnic or religious grounds), this war of aggression will inevitably make expressions of anti-Semitism more common. Each such expression, anywhere in the world, hardens the hearts of the Israeli population. And people with a hard heart will blind themselves the war-planners' real goal -- the hidden goal, the unstated goal, the obvious goal -- of taking Lebanon and stealing its resources.

Einige hatten sogar britische Flaggen dabei.

02.Aug.2006 Following Powerline, Washington Times Falsely Claims Dingell Refuses To ‘Condemn Hezbollah’ Judd
Yesterday, the right-wing blog Powerline
posted a chopped audio clip from a July 30 interview to smear Rep. John Dingell (D-MI) as a Hezbollah apologist.

This morning, the Washington Times follows their lead:

Here’s what Mr. Dingell had to say to a reporter in Detroit the other day during a television program: “I don’t take sides for or against Hezbollah; I don’t take sides for or against Israel.”

When asked if he really wasn’t “against Hezbollah,” Mr. Dingell replied, “No.”

Part of what’s behind Mr. Dingell’s appalling refusal to condemn Hezbollah are the tens of thousands of Muslims, mostly Shi’ites, living in his Michigan district.

Dingell did condemn Hezbollah in the same interview the Washington Times criticizes. The Washington Times cuts Dingell’s answer off at “No.” Here’s the full exchange:

Q: You’re not against Hezbollah?

DINGELL: No, I happen to be — I happen to be against violence , I think the USA has to bring resolution to this matter. Now, I condemn Hezbollah as does everybody else, for the violence.

Dingell also signed a letter on July 28, two days before the interview aired, calling on the EU to add Hezbollah to their terrorist list.

He also voted for a House Resolution in March 2005 which made the same request.

(In a subsquent post responding to “the loons at Think Progress,” Powerline nevertheless maintains that Dingell “does not quite deem [Hezbollah] a terrorist group.”)

There are legitimate criticisms of Dingell’s position on this issue. But they should be based on his actual views, not a dishonest caricature.

Contact Tony Blankley, the Washington Times Editorial Page Editor + (politely) tell him to publish Dingell’s full response and stop misleading his readers.

Crisis grows as Israel ‘launches attack deep in Lebanon.’ Nico The AP reports,

Progressive Reporter Ejected From National Conservative Student Conference Nico
This week, the Young America’s Foundation is hosting the
National Conservative Student Conference.

ThinkProgress reported recently that YAF’s spokesman Jason Mattera (who describes himself as “the surprisingly fresh face of conservatism) had denied a request by a representative of our sister organization, Campus Progress, to cover the event. From Mattera’s email:

Our event is open to real members of the press. You will not receive press credentials. My advice for you is to watch it on C-SPAN.

If you have a problem with that decision, you can complain to the Foundation’s media department spokesman. Oh wait…that’s…me. :)

Mattera’s reaction was criticised around the web — including by fellow conservatives at National Review, who acknowledged that they had received press credentials for Campus Progress’ annual conference.

Apparently Mattera didn’t care. Yesterday, he tracked down and ejected Conor Clarke, one of the lone progressive journalists covering the event for the Washington Monthly:

I was approached by YAF’s spokesman, Jason Mattera, on my way to see Newt Gingrich. “Who do you work for?”

Mattera demanded, with a touch of petulance. “The Washington Monthly,” I told him. “Are you writing for anyone else?” “I’m blogging for Campus Progress.”

And that did the trick. “There’s the elevator,” Mattera pointed. “I can have one of my interns push the down button.” But it didn’t end there.

What happened to the vaunted marketplace of ideas, I asked. The openness and exchange?

When Clarke asked why he was being ejected, Mattera responded, “Because I said so.”

He then admitted, “If you were with The National Review, I’d get you a seat right up front and have one of my interns give you a nice massage + grab you a cup of Sunkist.”

02.Aug.2006 Link Between Global Warming And Hurricane Intensity Remains Strong Judd
A study published in the journal Science questioning the link between increased hurricane strength + global warming was quickly seized upon by Matt Drudge + the right-wing blogosphere as evidence the dangers of global warming are over-hyped.

Time for a reality check. The author of the study, Christopher Landsea, does “not dispute global warming was occurring or that it could influence hurricanes.”

Rather, Landsea argues that pre-1990 data on hurricane strength is unreliable, so it can’t be used to construct multi-decade trends in hurricane strength.

These findings are preliminary and the author of the major study Landsea criticizes, M.I.T. scientist Kerry Emanuel, disputes them.

But ultimately, it doesn’t matter much whether Landsea is right or not about hurricane intensity data.

Other major studies have established the link between global warming and hurricane strength by relying on different data. Bill Chameides, Chief Scientist at Environmental Defense, elaborates on this point, using a study that relies on ocean temperature:

[Landsea’s study] from a public policy perspective has been made largely moot by the work of Trenberth and Shea, published in June 2006 in Geophysical Research Letters.

They showed that 50 % of the extremely warm temperatures of the North Atlantic Ocean in the summer of 2005 that spawned the record-breaking 2005 hurricane season was caused by global warming.[Release 31.Jul.2006]

The global warming deniers should put the cork back in their champagne.

02.Aug.2006 Malkin: Outrage About Qana ‘Manufactured,’ ‘If It’s Not Qana, It’s Something Else…It’s Beauty Pageants’ Judd
Last night on The O’Reilly Factor, Michelle Malkin said anger in the Arab world about the tragedy at Qana — where
at least 56 innocent civilians, including 37 children, were killed — was “manufactured.”

Malkin called it “the jihad du jour” that “members of the religion of perpetual outrage are always ginning up.”

She added, “If it’s not Qana, it’s something else. … It’s Gitmo, Abu Ghraib. It’s beauty pageants.” Watch it:

Transcript:

O’REILLY: Then why — why doesn’t the rest of the world accept your analysis?

MALKIN: Because they are intoxicated. They are clouded by this moral equivalence that has set in over the world for the past several decades. And I think it behooves us to fight against that, to claw against that.

Because the manufactured outrage that Qana is not really about the deaths at Qana; it is something about much larger. It is about the jihad du jour that these — that members of the religion of perpetual outrage are always ginning up. I mean, if it’s not Qana, it’s something else.

O’REILLY: No, I got it. I got it. I got it.

MALKIN: It’s Gitmo, Abu Ghraib. It’s beauty pageants.

The Real Issue With Net Neutrality ScuttleMonkey 209

"TechDirt brings into focus one of the largest problems in the net neutrality debate, not the issues themselves, rather it's the people involved and the lies they like to sling.

An example of this is certainly the number of lobbyists that are being looked to as 'experts' and getting their opinions published as such.

One specific example was a recent piece published in the Baltimore Sun by Mike McCurry, a lobbyist working for AT&T who claimed that with new legislation working for net neutrality Google wouldn't have to pay a dime.

In response, TechDirt has suggested that McCurry should swap telco bills with Google, somehow I doubt it will happen."

They said, for example, that more attention should be paid to alchemy’s role in the history of medicine.

They also remarked, somewhat conspiratorially, over parallels between the misguided certainties and self-delusion of alchemy + today’s political + religious attacks on modern science.

Of Boyle’s efforts to replicate experiments from alchemical writings, Joseph E. Early, a retired Georgetown University professor who studies the philosophy of chemistry, said,

He couldn’t do it any more than we could find the weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.”

Then the scholars departed Philadelphia, leaving the city’s lead-to-gold ratio unchanged.

Maj. Gen. Larry Arnold and Col. Alan Scott told the commission that NORAD had begun tracking United 93 at

11.Sep.2001 09:16 a.m., but the commission determined that the airliner was not hijacked until 12 minutes later.

The military was not aware of the flight until after it had crashed in Pennsylvania.

These and other discrepancies did not become clear until the commission, forced to use subpoenas, obtained audiotapes from the FAA and NORAD, officials said.

The agencies' reluctance to release the tapes -- along with e-mails, erroneous public statements + other evidence -- led some of the panel's staff members + commissioners to believe that authorities sought to mislead the commission and the public about what happened on 11.Sep.2001

9/11 Panel Suspected Deception by Pentagon
Allegations Brought to Inspectors General

By Dan Eggen
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, August 2, 2006; A03

Some staff members and commissioners of the Sept. 11 panel concluded that the Pentagon's initial story of how it reacted to the

11.Sep.2001 terrorist attacks may have been part of a deliberate effort to mislead the commission and the public rather than a reflection of the fog of events on that day, according to sources involved in the debate.

Suspicion of wrongdoing ran so deep that the 10-member commission, in a secret meeting at the end of its tenure in summer 2004, debated referring the matter to the Justice Department for criminal investigation, according to several commission sources. Staff members and some commissioners thought that e-mails and other evidence provided enough probable cause to believe that military and aviation officials violated the law by making false statements to Congress and to the commission, hoping to hide the bungled response to the hijackings, these sources said.

In the end, the panel agreed to a compromise, turning over the allegations to the inspectors general for the Defense and Transportation departments, who can make criminal referrals if they believe they are warranted, officials said.

"We to this day don't know why NORAD [the North American Aerospace Command] told us what they told us," said Thomas H. Kean, the former New Jersey Republican governor who led the commission.

"It was just so far from the truth. . . . It's one of those loose ends that never got tied."

Although the commission's landmark report made it clear that the Defense Department's early versions of events on the day of the attacks were inaccurate, the revelation that it considered criminal referrals reveals how skeptically those reports were viewed by the panel and provides a glimpse of the tension between it and the Bush administration.

A Pentagon spokesman said yesterday that the inspector general's office will soon release a report addressing whether testimony delivered to the commission was "knowingly false."

A separate report, delivered secretly to Congress in May 2005, blamed inaccuracies in part on problems with the way the Defense Department kept its records, according to a summary released yesterday.

A spokesman for the Transportation Department's inspector general's office said its investigation is complete and that a final report is being drafted.

Laura Brown, a spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration, said she could not comment on the inspector general's inquiry.

this news from Pakistan under "For what it's worth." I think this commentary is, if nothing else, interesting: RAWALPINDI: The former chief of ISI, Maj. Gen (R) Hameed Gul has "predicted" that America would definitely attack Iran and Syria simultaneously in October.
He was talking after attending the Hamdard Majlis Shoora, Tuesday evening. He also condemned the lackluster and weak reaction of Pakistan and Islamic bloc about Israel’s attack of Lebanon.
Analyzing the current war scenario he observed that war has both political and strategic factors and despite "using" Israel, America has lost the war in Lebanon, where masses have united against the recent Israeli onslaught + would have been more formidable if the generals of Saddam had not sold out to American dollars.
He analyzed that Israel would soon be "forced" to stop its land strikes but would continue its horrific and heinous air strikes against Lebanon, converting it to ruins.
He also "predicted" that after Iran and Syria, Saudi Arabia would also meet the same fate, followed by Pakistan. Hamid Gul is notoriously pro-Osama Bin Laden and pro-Taliban. (He also had
strong ties to the CIA, natch.) So take everything he says with a grain of salt. Several grains. Several pounds of salt.
Still...he ought to know the region. Who knows what kind of reports are coming across his desk?
Note, incidentally, that this pro-Al Qaeda guy thinks that the U.S. is pulling Israel's strings, not the other way around. Don't tell Xymphora.

There are many questions concerning the incident that occurred on Friday when Mel Gibson, driving in his automobile, was stopped by a Los Angeles County Sheriff near his home. There is no doubt that certain Jews were out to get Mr. Gibson ever since he produced "The Passion of the Christ". Was Sheriff's Deputy James Mee, a Jew, lying in wait for Mel Gibson. Pacific Coast Highway in this part of Malibu is a well known police trap. Here they can wait for celebrities that live in Malibu and that they know are coming home from restaurants, social engagements and parties where drinks are served. Why was Deputy Mee ordered to redo his police report by his superiors? Most important of all, how did reporter Harvey Levin end up with a copy of the original and unapproved report written by Deputy Mee and which Levine used to justify calling Mel Gibson "garbage". The report was obtained by Levine within a few hours after it was written. Was there collusion here between Deputy Mee, Levine and other Jews?

Powerline Uses Chopped Audio Clip to Smear Rep. John Dingell As Hezbollah Apologist Judd
Yesterday, the popular right-wing blog Powerline smeared Rep. John Dingell (D-MI) as an apologist for Hezbollah using an edited clip from local Detroit television.

The post, entitled “Dingell: What’s Wrong With Hezbollah,” features this misleading transcript, complete with edited audio:

Asked, “You’re not against Hezbollah?” Dingell answers, “No…”

Here’s what Dingell actually said:

Q: You’re not against Hezbollah?

DINGELL: No, I happen to be — I happen to be against violence , I think the USA has to bring resolution to this matter. Now, I condemn Hezbollah as does everybody else, for the violence.

Dingell was arguing that the USA should seek to maintain its historic role as an “honest broker” in the Middle East.

There are legitimate criticisms of this position, but they should be based on Dingell’s actual views, not a dishonest caricature. Watch the entire exchange:

Email Powerline and (politely) request that they tell their readers that, right after the audio clip they posted cuts out, Rep. Dingell says, “I condemn Hezbollah.”

Transcript:

DINGELL: First of all, our problem is that we must be a fair and honest broker and a friend to all parties.

The resolution didn’t make us that. We have to have the trust of both of the people of Israel + the people of the Arab countries around it, in order to help resolve the problem.

If we don’t, the possibilities of regional war, calamitous situation with regard to israel which has 5 million people amidst a billion and a half Arabs are a real potential for calamity.

Having said at that, what we have to do is to see to it that finally we begin to address the problems that exist to abate the difficulties that are preventing a– a honest solution to the problem + a negotiated end.

It takes– it takes a lot of work to get the trust that it takes to do this.

The resolution did not instill that kind of trust and the end result would be quite frankly, the real solution to the problems that exist in the middle east would probably have been and probably will be put off.

ANCHOR: Overall majority of your colleagues didn’t see it that way and some would suggest that if– even though there are obviously a lot of issues with Lebanon and with Palestinian cause wrapped up in this, that this largely boils down to israel against Hezbollah and Hezbollah is a group that the USA has deemed a terrorist organization, that there’s only one side for the Americans to come down on in this fight.

DINGELL: Well, we don’t, first of all, I don’t take sides for or against Hezbollah or for or against Israel.

ANCHOR: You’re not against Hezbollah?

DINGELL: No, I happen to be — I happen to be against violence, I think the USA has to bring resolution to this matter.

Now, I condemn Hezbollah as does everybody else, for the violence, but

I think if we’ve got to talk to them and if we don’t — if we don’t get ourselves in a position where we can talk to both sides and bring both sides together, the killing and the blood let is going to continue.

Boehner Pledges To Privatize Social Security: ‘We’re Going to Get Serious About This’ Nico
In an interview with the Washington Times published yesterday, House Majority Leader John Boehner (R-OH)
promised to privatize Social Security:

Q: Where does Social Security reform stand?

A: I just met with Congressman [Frank R. Wolf, Virginia Republican], a few minutes ago with his SAFE Commission [formed to fix the entitlement programs].

00.000.1990 -when I first ran for Congress- I talked about the need to reform these big entitlement programs because the sooner we began the process, the easier it would be to make the necessary changes so that these programs were sustainable for the long term. … If I’m around in a leadership role come January, we’re going to get serious about this.

Privitization plans championed by Boehner and others would sharply cut guaranteed benefits and are opposed by the overwhelming majority of Americans. Nevertheless, Boehner is just the latest prominent conservative to reaffirm his commitment to privatize Social Security in the months and years to come.

President Bush, 6/27/06:

Now is the time for the Congress and the President to work together to reform Medicare and reform Social Security so we can leave behind a solvent balance sheet for our next generation of Americans. … If we can’t get it done this year, I’m going to try next year. And if we can’t get it done next year, I’m going to try the year after that , because it is the right thing to do.

White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten, 17.Jun.2006 :

Looking ahead to next year, he is trying to lay the groundwork for a renewed effort to reform Social Security and Medicare, the federal health-care program for seniors. He suggests Mr. Bush and his aides may have learned from their failed attempt to push through Social Security reform in 2005.

House Ways and Means Social Security Subcommittee Chairman Jim McCrery (R-LA), 6/6/06:

Congress should make Social Security overhaul its top priority next year , while a rewrite of the tax code and revamping the nation’s healthcare system probably will wait until at least 2009, House Ways and Means Social Security Subcommittee Chairman Jim McCrery, R-La., said today.

"A Demora na Justiça Significa a Negação da Justiça"
01.Aug.2006
https://usinfo.state.gov/journals/itdhr/1299/ijdp/steen.htm

Army In Crisis: Two-Thirds of Brigade Combat Teams Not Ready to Report for Duty Faiz
In an interview today with Fox News’ Neil Cavuto, President Bush declared, “We have a very strong military and we can deal with any threat to the homeland there is + will if we have to.”

In reality, “the Army is showing the wear and tear of constant battle after nearly five years of war.” Rep. Ike Skelton, the ranking member on the House Armed Services Committee, recently reported:

Army readiness is in crisis. The administration has brought us here because of a lack of planning and a lack of funding.

Today two-thirds of the brigade combat teams in our operating force are unready.

As a result of the crisis, the Army is being forced to cut resources to nondeployed forces to make sure front-line troops stay at the highest combat readiness.

Rep. John Murtha explained that these are “the units that could be called upon or would be called upon to go to war in North Korea, Iran, or any other country or region.”

In 2000, Bush explained who should be blamed for a military that is overextended:

So let’s get something straight right now. To point out that our military has been overextended, taken for granted and neglected, that’s no criticism of the military.

That is criticism of a president and vice president and their record of neglect. [CNN, 11/3/00]

Today, two-thirds of the Army’s brigade combat teams are a testament to Bush’s record of neglect.

White House Conspicuously Absent From Blair, Schwarzenegger Energy Meetings Faiz
British Prime Minister Tony Blair + California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger are convening a series of high-profile meetings this week to discuss solutions to global climate change.

Twenty-five chief executive officers of major corporations around the world will be in attendance, including the heads of BP, DuPont Co. + Goldman Sachs Group.

But there is one group that will be notably absent: the White House. Greenwire reports (sub. req’d):

The Bush administration’s top environmental adviser received an informal invitation to attend the California-UK event, but

White House Council on Environmental Quality Chairman Jim Connaughton’s spokeswoman said he could not participate because of a scheduling conflict.

Connaughton’s spokeswoman, Kristen Hellmer, said the deal did not upset the Bush administration.

This is just a wonderful amplification of the work that President Bush and Prime Minister Blair agreed to at the G8 last year,” she said. “This wasn’t a surprise.”

The meeting may not be a suprise, but it is an embarrassment for the administration.

The agenda will focus on items that Bush pledged he would act on but hasn’t: 1) regulating carbon dioxide and 2) encouraging new, greener technologies.

Barry Rabe, a University of Michigan professor and an expert on U.S. climate policy at the state level, said the administration’s failure to attend sends the wrong message.

It suggests certainly in this instance the federal government is really conspicuous by its absence,” he said.

Hagel: The Iraq War Is ‘An Absolute Replay Of Vietnam’ Think Progress
Four months ago, Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-NE) described the conditions in Iraq as a “
low grade civil war.” Today, his view is much more bleak.

In an interview with the Omaha World Herald, the Vietnam War veteran said that the country had descended into “absolute anarchyand the war was “an absolute replay of Vietnam.”

Hagel also blasted the Pentagon’s plan to send 5,000 additional U.S. troops to Iraq, saying the move was opposed by several four-star generals: [Hagel] said that

in the previous 48 hours, he had received three telephone calls from four-star generals who were “beside themselves” over the Pentagon’s reversal of plans to bring tens of thousands of soldiers home this fall.

Instead, top Pentagon officials are suspending military rotations and adding troops in Iraq. The Pentagon has estimated that the buildup will increase the number of U.S. troops from about 130,000 to 135,000.

That isn’t going to do any good. It’s going to have a worse effect ,” Hagel said. “ They’re destroying the United States Army. “

Hagel — unlike Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN)understands that “staying the course” in Iraq isn’t an option.

More ?Birth Pangs? in Condi?s ?New Middle East?
Mike Whitney Nations are like people; ultimately they return to the habits with which they feel most comfortable. In Israel?s case, the infrequent periods of peace typically end with a return to the familiar pattern of war crimes and human rights abuse. Last night was no different. The attack on Qana killed 54 Lebanese civilians most of them women and children. The heart-wrenching photos of the bloody victims being pulled from the wreckage have already flooded the ! internet although they probably will be blocked from the mainstream news until Israel can mount its public relations offensive. "Perception management" always takes precedent over the normal expressions of grief. Israeli Prime Minister Olmert has already blamed Hezbollah for the attack; accusing them of using civilians as "human shields" to protect supplies of Katushya rockets. So far, all of the news reports have denied that there were any rockets at the site.

Israeli Prime Minister on Qana.
The Angry Arab News Service "Olmert: Hezbollah used Qana as base to launch 100s of rockets", so we decided to kill all the women and children who are launching these rockets. I proudly announce to the Israeli nation that we have succeeded in killing a large number of the women and children of the enemy today + will kill more tomorrow. This is the essence of Zionism. And we shall continue to kill their women and children; this has been the mission of our proud IDF. And if ! anybody protests, we can easily call those women and children terrorists--whether they are PLO, Hizbullah, Communists, it does not matter. As the only democracy in the Middle East, we have the moral duty to kill their woman and children.

I ask the people of Israel to stand behind the Israeli army in its moment of glory as they continue to kill the women and children of Lebanon and Palestine... https://www.uruknet.info/?p=25252

Dear Kofi, It?s Time remove the U.S. and Israel from the United Nations
Mike Whitney Dear Secretary-General, I am writing to you with the hope that you will take swift action to address a grave and existential threat to the United Nations. The events in the Middle East are quickly spinning out of control as today?s attack on the UN offices in Beirut clearly indicates. The central problem is that the UN is no longer able to fulfill its mandate to "keep the peace" because of the obstructionism of the USA!

In the last few days, 15 foreign ministers met in Rome to determine the appropriate language for a statement calling for an immediate cease-fire to the violence in Lebanon. As you know, the countries unanimously supported the motion except for the USA which blocked the measure to give Israel more time to destroy Lebanon with its vicious air-campaign. I think you will agree that the UN cannot survive if it is hamstrung in its duties by the narrow policy-objectives of the individual states. In this case, both Washington and Tel Aviv want war + so, war it is... https://www.uruknet.info/?p=25254

Zionist War Crimes Censorship

They?ve gone from a union of nations working for the good of the world (if they ever were even that), to a bunch of gravediggers. The ?Human Shield? LIE Exposed
The Truth Will Set You Free On the heels of Israel's horrendous massacre of more than 60 civilians in Qana, among them OVER 40 CHILDREN, I will lay to rest once and for all, the colossal lie presented in unison by these mass murderers and their accomplices, in defense of the indefensible - the position that Hizbullah uses civilians as "human shields" against overwhelming Israeli aggression. Nothing could be more illogical or absurd. Let's examine it carefully. When someone uses anot! her human being as a "shield," under the plain meaning of the word, it is understood to be a method to deter aggression by adversaries. In order for that objective to be achieved, crucial premises must first exist. The party who employs the human shield MUST assume that their adversary will hesitate to fire against those shields for fear of harming them.

But in order for that to happen, the adversary must first CARE about the welfare of the so-called "human shields."

If the opposing party DOES NOT CARE about their welfare, then the alleged objective of deterring aggression falls apart.... https://www.uruknet.info/?p=25247

Congressman Brags About Sabotaged Minimum Wage Bill: ‘You Have Seen Us Really Outfox You’ Judd
At
2 a.m. on Saturday morning, the House of Representatives passed a bill that links a $2 increase in the minimum wage to a dramatic cut of the estate tax for millionaires.

A few hours earlier, Rep. Zach Wamp (R-TN) went on the House floor to brag about this ploy, which has little chance of passing the Senate.

Wamp said to his opponents, “I know why you’re so mad and why you say things you don’t really mean. It’s because you have seen us really outfox you on this issue tonight.” Watch it:

Transcript:

WAMP: The other side says all the time, you run this place. You’ve got majorities in the House and Senate. And I want to remind them that we do. And if we didn’t want to do this, we wouldn’t do it.

You know why we are doing it this way? Because this is the better way to do it because the small businesspeople and the family farmers need certainty in terms of this estate tax. We eliminated it but it comes back.

It is an onerous tax. It’s an unfair tax.

When you raise wages, it is a fixed cost in business, You have to compensate that with smart business investments through tax polcy.

Our tax policy has been good for America.

Our economic policy is good for America.

This minimum wage increase is a savvy way to put it all together and make this medicine for America go down smooth and keep our economy strong.

Because this will force some fixed costs up in small business + you can’t just throw it on them without some people losing their jobs + this is a fair and responsible way to do it.

I know why you’re so mad and why you say things you don’t really mean. It’s because you have seen us really outfox you on this issue tonight.

That’s what we are doing today is bringing a very crafty, smart, good for America, good for the economy package and still allow the minimum wage to go up.

To Paris With Love: Multi-Millionaire Heirs Get 183 Years of Minimum Wage Income Guest
House conservatives
passed a bill last week that combined a minimum wage hike with a dramatic cut to the estate tax (aka the Paris Hilton Tax).

By my calculations, the minimum wage hike will increase the incomes of full-time, minimum wage workers by $84 a week, or about $4,368 a year.

This would bring their income up to just over $15,000 a year (assuming 40 hours per week and 52 weeks per year.)

By contrast, the heirs of multimillionaires would receive substantially more by way of benefits. Consider the heirs who stand to receive a $10 million fortune through married parents. Under the new proposed law they would receive a tax break of as much as $2.76 million (compared with the 2006 estate tax law.)

Put another way, the heirs of the $10 million estate would get a tax break worth as much as 183 years of the income of a full-time minimum wage earner.

RFID-enabled Vehicles: Pinch My Ride Hemos 46 Billosaur writes

"Wired has an excellent article on the problems with the theft of RFID-enabled vehicles and how insurance companies are so over-confident in the technology, they are denying claims when such vehicles are stolen.

Example: "Emad Wassef walked out of a Target store in Orange County, California, to find a big space where his 2003 Lincoln Navigator had been.

The 38-year-old truck driver and former reserve Los Angeles police officer did what anyone would do: He reported the theft to the cops and called his insurance company.

Two weeks later, the black SUV turned up near the Mexico border, minus its stereo, airbags, DVD player + door panels.

Wassef assumed he had a straightforward claim for around $25,000. His insurer, Chicago-based Unitrin Direct, disagreed."

Their forensic examiner concluded that since all the keys were accounted for,

there was no way the engine could have been started, despite the evidence that the ignition lock had been forced + the steering wheel locking lug had been damaged."

Parexel Destroys Immune Systems, Not Liable Hemos 109 A reader writes:

" The four TGN1412 test victims learned recently that they have no detectable t-cells, which makes it "likely" (read certain) they will suffer from numerous diseases and truncated lifespans.

It has been determined that Parexel was negligent in its aftercare of the victims.

The victims have already suffered severe injuries such as gangrene requiring the amputation of all toes and three fingers (without toes you cannot remain standing or walk, btw) and endured unimaginable agony.

But it seems Parexel, despite having the moral responsibilty for the outcome of its incompetence + the financial ability to pay proper restitution (estimated yearly revenue of $750 million) is ignoring the victims + using the legal system to avoid liability.

The lessons are that $4000 is not worth risking your life over, that that is what you are doing if you are foolish enough to volunteer for medical testing whatever promises you receive not withstanding + that if you are so foolish you will be left to die by the company responsible without legal recourse should things go wrong.

In other words, only an ignorant would sign up for medical testing. I predict a decline in voluntary test subjects + a rise in the use of prisoners and other "disposable" human subjects."

Lebanon and Gaza invasions planned last month in Colorado meetings between Netanyahu, Sharansky + Cheney. Wayne Madsen Report

The Israeli invasion of Lebanon was planned between top Israeli officials and members of the Bush administration.

17.Jun.2006-18.Jun.2006 former Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu + Likud Knesset member Natan Sharansky met with Vice President Dick Cheney at the American Enterprise Institute conference in Beaver Creek, Colorado.

There, the impending Israeli invasions of both Gaza and Lebanon were discussed.

After receiving Cheney's full backing for the invasion of Gaza + Lebanon, Netanyahu flew back to Israel + participated in a special "Ex-Prime Ministers" meeting, in which he conveyed the Bush administration's support for the carrying out of the "Clean Break" policy -- the trashing of all past Middle East peace accords, including Oslo .

Present at the meeting, in addition to Netanyahu, were current Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and former Prime Ministers Ehud Barak and Shimon Peres .

Former Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir is very old and suffers from dementia and Ariel Sharon remains in a coma after a series of strokes.

After the AEI meeting, Sharansky, who has the ear of Bush, met with the Heritage Foundation in Washington + then attended a

29.Jun.2006 seminar at Philadelphia's Main Line Haverford School sponsored by the Middle East Forum led by Daniel Pipes .

Sharansky appeared with Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum who this past Thursday was beating the war drums against Syria, Iran + "Islamo-fascism" in a fiery speech at the National Press Club attended by a cheering section composed of members of the neocon Israel Project , on whose board Santorum serves along with Georgia Sen. Saxby Chambliss and Virginia GOP Rep. Tom Davis .

Our Washington sources claim that the U.S.-supported invasions of Gaza + Lebanon and the impending attacks on Syria and Iran represent the suspected "event" predicted to take place prior to the November election in the USA and is an attempt to rally the American public around the Bush-Cheney regime during a time of wider war .

31.Jul.2006 Lying About Ledeen: National Review Falsely Claims NeoCon ‘Has Opposed Military Action Against Iran’ Judd
The right-wing blogosphere is up in arms over a Rolling Stone article about prominent neo-conservative Michael Ledeen.

The article, written by James Bamford, argues that Ledeen was using unreliable intelligence to push the Bush administration into military action against Iran.

The National Review’s Andrew McCarthy and Mark Levin claim that the premise of Bramford’s article is flawed because Ledeen opposes military action against Iran:

Yet, anyone even vaguely familiar with Michael’s work knows that he has opposed military action against Iran — notwithstanding that he was years ahead of most experts in accurately portraying Iran’s role as the terror master at the center of the jihadist network.

Ledeen makes a similar argument is his own response to Bramford, claiming “I’ve openly and consistently opposed military invasion.”

11.Jul.2006 -Actually, writing for the National Review on- Ledeen said the USA should attack Iran:

But one thing I do know: I would insist that my soldiers have the right of “hot pursuit” into Iran and Syria + I would order my armed forces to attack the terrorist training camps in those countries.

The National Review has every right to defend Ledeen. But they should at least make a modest effort to get their facts straight.

A
clandestine telephone recording indicates that Cacho's harassment was arranged, in large part, by another Lebanese businessman in Mexico: Kamel Nacif, who travels in the highest circles of the Mexican government. Nacif, a wealthy and (by all accounts) exploitative and despotic maquiladora owner, seems to have had close ties to Jean Succar Kuri: In the conversations, the voices identified as those of Nacif and [Puebla governor Mario] Marín discuss how they had the activist arrested and thrown into a cell with "nutcases and dykes (lesbians)," so that she would be raped. That did not happen, however, because in the prison in Puebla, "the prisoners themselves and the guards protected me," said the writer. But she was mistreated. Cacho described how she was threatened during the nearly 20-hour trip to Puebla and was only allowed to eat once. From the Casino Watch website: Mexican textile magnate Kamel Nacif has been a familiar face at Las Vegas gambling tables for some 30 years, using phony identification to wager at Caesars Palace when he was still in his late teens. He remains, however, a bit of a multimillionaire mystery man, long suspected by Nevada Gaming Control Board agents of money laundering and arms and narcotics dealing. There's more. The Bushes have been tied to yet another shadowy Lebanese clan.

I know the bill (PDF) obtained by Marty Lederman at Balkinization , which is now making the (hushed-up) rounds of Washington, purports to be just an early draft of the Bush "administration's" draft of post- Hamdan curative legislation for the use of military tribunals. But I also know that the "administration" has little or no intention of conforming to the state of the law as you and I understand it. So I have to ask whether some of the provisions in there are just poorly-drafted mistakes, or intentional short-cuts.

Let's start with this one, already caught by Dave Glazier at Intel Dump , who points out:

The draft endeavors to formally define the Bush Administration coined term “enemy combatant,” but does so in a somewhat bizarre manner. After first declaring them to be persons who have violated the law of war, it further divides them into “lawful enemy combatants” – law of war violators who otherwise meet the Hague and Geneva criteria such as carrying arms openly whereas “unlawful enemy combatants” would specifically be members of al Qaeda or the Taliban. There are two fundamental problems with this definitional approach. First, it literally presupposes guilt + second, “lawful enemy combatants” should merit full POW status whereas nothing in the draft seems to provide for that.

Here's how that provision appears in the draft. Tell me what you think it means if, for some reason, you're not buying Glazier's reading. For ease of understanding, strikethrough text is original bill language that has been removed + underlined text is language that has been added. I don't know whose edits these are:

The Bush administration has played an integral part in the war on Lebanon. They blocked the “peace initiative” proposed by the 15-member coalition at the Rome Conference and they supplied “precision-guided weapons” during the hostilities so Israel could continue to pulverize Beirut and the cities in the south. They have been as engaged in the fighting as any combatant in the field and should not be regarded an “impartial arbiter”.

Matthews: War in Iraq United ‘the Disparate Pieces of Shia Radicalism into a Frankenstein Monster’ Think Progress
Chris Matthews, at the conclusion of his Sunday morning talk show explored the impact of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.

Matthews said that Iraq used to be “a country which has fought revolutionary Iran for eight years to a bloody stand still.” Now, it’s a “Shia dominated ally of Iran.” Matthews concluded: “Our brave soldiers have fought, died and been dismembered in Iraq only to connect the disparate pieces of Shia radicalism into a frankenstein monster that has come to life right there on our TV screens.” Watch it:

Transcript:

MATTHEWS: Two years ago, King Abdullah of Jordan warned me of what was coming in the mideast. His prediction was dead. He spoke of his fears and what the USA was doing in iraq, toppling one government, electing another, was creating what he called a shi’ia crescent, from Tehran through Baghdad to Beirut that threatened to dominate the Arab world, challenging modern Sunni governments in Egypt + Saudi Arabia + others with an axis of Shia power based in Iran.

When I look at the map today, that Shia crescent the King foretold has come to light.

It is hard for us westerners to understand the internal politics of another region when we can’t predict whether the Democrats will take congress from the Republicans three months from now, how could we see the Shi’ia grabbing the high ground from the Sunni in the mideast three years ago? That’s what happened.

We converted Iraq from a country which has fought revolutionary Iran for eight years to a bloody stand still to a Shia dominated ally of Iran and created a boulevard of common religion and common regional politics.

Did you hear the new Iraqi leader take sides with Hezbollah in a struggle with Israel?

This is the emerging threat, not just to the moderate Sunni countries including Egypt and Jordan who formed + honored treaties to Israel + us.

Our brave soldiers have fought, died and been dismembered in Iraq only to connect the disparate pieces of Shi’ia radicalism into a frankenstein monster that has come to life right there on our TV screens + worse yet in the vicarious mideast where young arabs found a hero named Hezbollah.

But she did not call for an immediate ceasefire.

Rice will abandon her Middle East negotiations at least temporarily to return to Washington Monday.”

Zakaria: Rumsfeld ‘Seems In A Parallel Universe and Slightly Deranged’ Nico  Newsweek editor Fareed Zakaria ripped into Donald Rumsfeld this morning on ABC’s This Week. Watch it:
Transcript:

[If I were running against conservatives,] I would make up a campaign commercial almost entirely of Donald Rumsfeld’s press conferences, because the man is looking — I mean, it’s not just that he seems like a bad Secretary of [Defense]. He seems literally in a parallel universe and slightly deranged. If you listen to what he said last week about Iraq, he’s living in a different world, not a different country.

Zakaria may have been referencing Rumsfeld’s “glibremarks last week when asked whether Iraq was getting “closer to a civil war:

SEC. RUMSFELD: Oh, I don’t know. You know, I thought about that last night + just musing over the words, the phrase + what constitutes it.

If you think of our Civil War, this is really very different. If you think of civil wars in other countries, this is really quite different.

There is - there is a good deal of violence in Baghdad and two or three other provinces + yet in 14 other provinces there’s very little violence or numbers of incidents.

So it’s a - it’s a highly concentrated thing. It clearly is being stimulated by people who would like to have what could be characterized as a civil war and win it, but I’m not going to be the one to decide if, when or at all.

Parts of French 'iPod Law' Struck Down Zonk 44 idobi writes

"Parts of the French 'iPod law' have been struck down.

The French Constitutional Council found certain aspects of the law to be troubling + a violation of copyright... not the copyright of artists, but companies' copyright of their DRM software." From the article:

"In particular, the council eliminated reduced fines for file sharing and said companies could not be forced, without compensation, to make music sold online compatible with any music device.

The law, which had been approved by the French Senate and National Assembly last month, was brought for review by the council following the demand of more than 100 members of the National Assembly.

The council's review of whether the law fits within the French Constitution's framework is one of the final steps before a law is promulgated.

Now it could take effect as altered by the council, or the government could bring it once more before the Parliament."
