During 2000, Lindauer began her efforts to cultivate Iraqi contacts for better relations with the U.S. She described an extraordinary opportunity that might have changed the entire direction of U.S. - Iraq relations. As the secular dictator of an Arab state, Hussein was not fond of Islamic terrorists. Lindauer reported to her U.S. contacts that the Iraq government would welcome an F.B.I. taskforce into Baghdad. She reported further, that “The F.B.I. would be able to interview witnesses and make arrests.” Further, she says that: Iraq also offered banking records and proof of financial transfers that would prove Middle Eastern involvement in the Oklahoma City bombing and the first attack on the World Trade Center in 1993. The program met with a frosty reception from the newly installed Bush administration. I wasn't able to decipher much from that article, since there are no good free online Romanian-English translation services. (My Romanian is, er, a little rusty.) But Googling on those names brought forth a wild tale of nefarious doings on the high seas back in 2002. (Note: There are several ways to transliterate "Riffat Mahmoud," and "Dimitros" probably should read "Dimitrios.")
These guys ran cargo ships + stood accused of transporting Osama's operatives. These incidents suggest that Kokkos and Muhammed are chiefs of al Qaeda's maritime operations. Kokkos has links with Greek crime syndicates and is purely driven by commercial interests while Muhammed is an al Qaeda operative in the Persian Gulf and Mediterranean. Their modus operandi is simple: al Qaeda operatives posing as seamen are flown in from Karachi, embark on vessels to support cells, collect/disburse/disseminate cash, addresses, instructions and identity papers. Besides, the strategy involves using small, weather beaten, rusty cargo vessels that change names and flags at sea. Before arriving at a port, the vessels rendezvous with another ship, offload the operatives who then masquerade as stowaway/ distressed immigrants. Permalink

Far West is connected to these companies: Meteoric Tactical Solutions (in Angola); KBR Halliburton(in Colombia, Afghanistan, Kosovo, Georgia + Iraq); Diligence Iraq LLC (in Iraq). Far West's cooperation with these companies began in the end of 1994 in Angola on the initiative of Russian arms trafficker Victor Bout. Bill Allison, a spokesman for the Center for Public Integrity, a Washington, D.C.-based, nonpartisan government watchdog group, says CalPERS involvement with offshore entities "raises eyebrows."
"I have to say that is strange that a public pension fund is involved with offshore entities like that. You have something like CalPERS, which is supposed to have accountability and transparency + you're dealing with a group [Carlyle] that is the opposite of that, very opaque," Allison says.
I asked the retirement system whether it would disclose its co-owners in the Carlyle Group and co-investors in Carlyle partnerships -- particularly the previously mentioned partnerships chartered in the Cayman Islands. In response, CalPERS Media Relations Manager Brad Pacheco said he had searched the system's meeting agendas and associated public paperwork in regard to Carlyle and found no disclosure of such ownership. Determining whether other CalPERS staff had ownership information, and whether the retirement system's contracts with Carlyle permitted disclosure of that information, would require more time than my deadline for writing this column allowed, he indicated.
He indicated it five days after receiving my written request for the ownership information.

Natürlich kommen die Menschen da nie wieder raus im Regelfall, aber für die Banken ist das genau der Profit-Sektor. Die anderen Kredite vergeben sie nur, damit das nicht so offensichtlich kriminell aussieht. In dem Kontext ist die folgende Meldung sehr schön: Jetzt wo die Vergaberegeln für Junk-Hypotheken gestiegen sind, drücken die Pusher-Banden der Banken immer mehr Junk-Kreditkartenverträge in die Risiko-Bevölkerungsgruppen. Und da kommt noch eine perfide Sache hinzu: Bush hat gerade das Konkursrecht geändert, damit man mit dem Offenbarungseid nicht aus Kreditkartenschulden rauskommt. Das war natürlich Profitoptimierung für die Banken, die das Gesetz auch geschrieben haben.

Seit der Film 2006 erschienen ist + erst Recht nach dessen Oscarauszeichnung haben sich Heerscharen von Wissenschaftlern, Umweltschützern und Klimawandelskeptikern über den Streifen hergemacht und ihn aus allen Winkeln beleuchtet. Dabei tauchten kleinere Fehler und Unschärfen auf, doch die meisten Experten bescheinigten Gore, die Faktenlage im Großen und Ganzen korrekt dargestellt zu haben. Einige der Fehler, die Burton in dem Film fand, sind zudem kaum Gore selbst vorzuwerfen - es sei denn, man erwartet von dem US-Politiker mehr als von den Wissenschaftlern. Dass etwa der Klimawandel den Golfstrom gefährden könnte, war bis vor kurzem eine selbst von prominenten Forschern vertretene Meinung, die erst in den vergangenen Monaten weitgehend revidiert wurde. Anderes - wie etwa der Zusammenhang zwischen Hurrikanen und der Erwärmung - ist derzeit Gegenstand angeregter Fachdebatten.
