Why is the NTSB testing Stinger missiles in southern Florida, where the light pollution will not remotely match the level near Long Island? Also, Stingers are mostly contact missiles that would leave burn marks or residue.

The Navy primarily uses what is known as "expanding metal rod" surface-to-air missiles that explode in front of a target. Millions of tiny metal rods then make holes in the plane's skin, and the air speed rips the plane apart.

President Clinton today accused the terror network allegedly operated by Saudi fugitive Osama bin Laden of plotting to harm Americans gathered for millennium celebrations.

"Last December, working with Jordan, we shut down a plan to place large bombs at locations where Americans might gather for New Year's Eve," Clinton said in commencement remarks to 184 cadets at the Coast Guard Academy.

"We learned the plot was linked to terrorist camps in Afghanistan and the organization created by Osama bin Laden, the man responsible for the

Clinton was making the point that the new Coast Guard graduates will face a range of threats to America's security, from terrorism to smuggling to the spread of disease. "Today and for the forseeable tomorrows we and especially you will face a fateful struggle between forces of integration and harmony and the forces of disintegration and chaos," Clinton said. After Clinton spoke, each cadet was presented with a bachelor of science degree and a commission as an ensign. Ensigns begin their a five-year service obligation with a tour of duty aboard a Coast Guard cutter.

Die Strafen sind auf der einen Seite ziemlich heftig, Knast ist ja eher für Vergewaltigung und Mord und so gedacht, auf der anderen Seite aber auch vergleichsweise moderat, denn sie fordern nicht pro geowntem Botnet-Zombie einmal das Strafmaß für Rechner-Hacken, sondern nur einmal Strafe für das DDoS. Ich denke mal, da kommen dann auch noch mal zivilrechtliche Schadensersatzforderungen der Opfer drauf, das ist dann in Amerika üblicherweise der wirklich teure Teil. Um das mal in Perspektive zu setzen: die Strafen sind vergleichbar mit dem, was sie dicken Spammern aufbrummen, nur dass da die Geldstrafen höher sind, weil sie die Gewinne abschöpfen, und die scheinen ja doch substanziell zu sein beim Spammen. Solche Angriffe gibt es immer wieder. Den bisher spektakulärsten fand ich einen, der anhand des Timings der Pakete bei einer SSH-Sitzung über Wahrscheinlichkeiten und Tastenabstände getippte Worte rekonstruiert hat, und sogar Passwörter raten bzw den Suchraum stark einschränken konnte.

Das generelle Problem von Timingangriffen betrifft auch z.B. TOR, was ja immer wieder gerne als Lösung für anonymes Webklicken empfohlen wird. Aus den Paketen läßt sich der einzelne User gut rekonstruieren. Aus der Ecke wird noch einiges auf uns zukommen.

The adamant opposition to impeachment proceedings on the part of Pelosi, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, and the rest of the Democratic leadership does not stem from a belief that such proceedings would be unpopular. According to public opinion polls, a majority of the American people and an overwhelming majority of Democratic voters favor Bush’s impeachment and removal from office.

A public vote in the House of Representatives would, however, find a clear majority of the Democrats in Congress siding with Bush against the sentiments of their own constituents. The Democratic leadership seeks to block any vote to conceal as much as possible their role as the last line of defense for the Bush administration.

Die Argumente für die angeblichen Vorteile von gentechnisch veränderten Agrarprodukten sind leicht zu widerlegen: Gennahrungsmittel sind nicht billiger, im Gegenteil, Genmais ist in den USA ein Drittel teurer als konventioneller, bei etlichen Genpflanzen muß der Einsatz von Agrarchemie gesteigert werden, weil Schädlinge resistent werden; auch der Ertrag wird vielfach nicht gesteigert.

Selbst die Forscher des Büros für Technikfolgenabschätzung beim Deutschen Bundestag kommen zu dem Schluß, daß ein Nutzen von GVOs nicht erwiesen ist.
