The White House has denied a Guardian report that Bush is preparing to make an “historic shift” on global warming in his State of the Union address.
“[The story] is inaccurate on all fronts,” a White House official said, “+ especially regarding the State of the Union.”
The National Association of Evangelicals (NAE), which represents 45,000 churches, has joined with leading scientists to fight global warming.
“Whether God created the Earth in a millisecond or whether it evolved over billions of years, the issue we agree on is that it needs to be cared for today,” said Rich Cizik of the NAE.
President Bush’s escalation plan is facing “some of its fiercest resistance from the very people it depends on for success: Iraqi government officials.”
Private contractors, civilian government employees, embedded journalists + other civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan “could be subject for the first time to military courts-martial under a new federal provision.”
Frederick W. Kagan. an American Enterprise Scholar who “has the president’s ear” on Iraq and crafted the escalation plan, is actually not a “military expert,” according to a look at his resume.
And finally: After six years in office, President Bush has now spent one full year at Camp David . “Mark Knoller, CBS White House correspondent and the unofficial archivist for the White House press corps, reports on the CBS Web site that the Bushes took off Friday for their 116th visit to the beautiful presidential retreat and their 365th day there.” As of Jan. 1, Bush has spent 405 full or partial days at the Crawford ranch.

15.Jan.2007 The Trouble with Physics - samzenpus 39 - SpaceAdmiral writes
"You've likely heard of Lee Smolin's book The Trouble with Physics. It has created a lot of controversy because it argues that string theory gets far too much attention and money, despite a complete lack of evidence. It accuses string theorists of groupthink. Smolin has dabbled in string theory from time to time but he's a proponent of the alternative loop quantum gravity. Although irrelevant to this book review, he has also suggested that it is possible that universes reproduce via black holes, making them prone to pressure similar to natural selection (universes that produce a lot of black holes are more successful spawners than those that don't). In The God Delusion, Richard Dawkins quotes Nobel-winner Murray Gell-Mann as once saying, "Smolin? Is he that young guy with those crazy ideas? He may not be wrong."" 15.Jan.2007 3D Printers To Build Houses - kdawson 256 - gbjbaanb writes to point out an article in the Sunday Times describing two separate programs where robots are being developed to build houses.
The Los Angeles project is farther along than the one in the UK, but the article provides more details on the techniques employed in the latter. Liquid concrete and gypsum will be sprayed from nozzles in a manner analogous to an inkjet printer. From the article: "The first prototype — a watertight shell of a two-story house built in 24 hours without a single builder on site — will be erected in California before April. The robots are rigged to a metal frame, enabling them to shuttle in three dimensions and assemble the structure of the house layer by layer. The sole foreman on site operates a computer programmed with the designer's plans... Inspired by the inkjet printer, the technology goes far beyond the techniques already used for prefabricated homes. 'This will remove all the limitations of traditional building,' said [an architect involved with the UK project]. 'Anything you can dream you can build.'"

Sharing information in this way is currently prohibited by the 'over-zealous' data protection legislation. The moves came as public opposition to Mr Bush's new policy seemed, if anything, to harden, while Congress geared up for what is shaping up as the fiercest constitutional battle over the war-waging powers of a President since the Vietnam war." 1/15

15.Jan.2007 https://www.cannonfire.blogspot.com/The President is Commander in Chief when the military is called into service by the Congress.
In other words, he decides what actions the various services will take once Congress has declared war, but that is about it.
Congress holds all the other cards in this game.
In fact, it's a bit like a board game where the President can shuffle the cards and move the pieces, but Congress not only makes the board and the cards + the pieces, they decide when and if the game is even played.
15.Jan.2007 https://www.cannonfire.blogspot.com/Is the President planning to attack Iran + does he really believe he can do this without Congressional approval? Biden delivered the ultimate ultimatum:
If he does, then there will be a Constitutional confrontation.
This is very very good news, especially from the man who tried just last week to claim that there is little Congress can do, by the purse or otherwise, about the President's plans to send in more troops.
So I just thought I'd take this opportunity to remind everyone what the Constitution actually has to say about who can do what when with the military. Article I, Section 8:
The Congress shall have the power....
To declare War, grant Letters of Marque and Reprisal and make Rules concerning Captures on Land and Water;
To raise and support Armies, but no Appropriation to that Use shall be for a longer Term than two years;
To provide and maintain a Navy;
To make Rules for the government and Regulation of the land and naval Forces;
To provide for calling forth the Militia to execute the Laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections and repel Invasions;
To provide for organizing, arming + disciplining, the Militia + for governing such Part of them as may be employed in the Service of the USA, reserving to the States respectively, the Appointment of the Officers + the Authority of training the Militia according to the discipline prescribed by Congress. ....
Article II, Section 2:

.... Compare and contrast the amount of power given over the military to Congress and to the President.

14.Jan.2007 Bush: I’m Sending More Troops To Iraq No Matter What Congress Does - Judd -
This week, Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-MA) introduced a resolution requiring President Bush to gain new congressional authorization before escalating the War in Iraq.
President Bush, however, says that he is going to send more troops to Iraq no matter what Congress does. Watch an excerpt from his 60 Minutes interview tonight:
Legal scholars on the right and left agree that Congress has the legal power to prevent an escalation or end the war completely. Transcript:
Q: If you have the authority to put the troops in there no matter what the Congress wants to do.
BUSH: I think I’ve got, in this situation I do, yeah. I fully understand they could try to stop me from doing it. But I’ve made my decision. And we’re going forward.
14.Jan.2007 Contradicting Bush, Cheney Claims ‘We Have In Fact Made Enormous Progress’ In Iraq - Faiz -
For years, President Bush and Vice President Cheney have asserted that “absolutely, we’re winning” in Iraq.
Bush put an end to such happy talk last Wednesday night, omitting suggestions that we’re “winning” or making “progress,” and instead stating:
The violence in Iraq [over the last year] — particularly in Baghdad — overwhelmed the political gains the Iraqis had made. …
And the result was a vicious cycle of sectarian violence that continues today. The situation in Iraq is unacceptable to the American people — and it is unacceptable to me.
Vice President Cheney does not appear to share the same assessment of the situation in Iraq as Bush.
On Fox News this morning, Cheney claimed, “If you look at what’s transpired in Iraq, Chris, we’ve made enormous progress.” Watch it: Full transcript:
WALLACE: The president and you have repeatedly said that you are on the path to victory, sometimes proposing exactly the opposite policy of what the president did this week. Let’s take a look.
[begin Fox video clip]
BUSH: Sending more Americans would undermine our strategy of encouraging Iraqis to take the lead in this fight.
BUSH: Not only can we win the war in Iraq, we are winning the war in Iraq.
BUSH: Will we be nimble enough? Will we be able to deal with the circumstances on the ground + the answer is yes, we will.
BUSH: Absolutely we’re winning.
[end Fox video clip]
WALLACE: Mr. Vice President, why should we believe that this time you’ve got it right?
CHENEY: If you look at what’s transpired in Iraq, Chris, we have in fact made enormous progress.

14.Jan.2007 Doomsday Clock To Advance - kdawson 240 - Dik Zak writes
"Many news sites are reporting that the magazine Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists intends to move the hands of the Doomsday Clock on Wednesday 17 January. The clock was started at seven minutes to midnight during the Cold War and has been moved forward or back at intervals, depending on the state of the world and the prospects for nuclear war. Midnight represents destruction by nuclear war. It is not revealed in which direction the hands of the clock will be moved, but it should be safe to assume that they will move closer to midnight: the magazine cites 'worsening nuclear [and] climate threats.' The clock stood at two minutes to midnight when both the USA and the Soviet Union tested nuclear weapons in 1953. George Orwell Shopkeepers At War I
I began this book to the tune of German bombs + I begin this second chapter in the added racket of the barrage.
The yellow gun-flashes are lighting the sky, the splinters are rattling on the housetops + London Bridge is falling down, falling down, falling down.
Anyone able to read a map knows that we are in deadly danger.
I do not mean that we are beaten or need be beaten.
Almost certainly the outcome depends on our own will.
But at this moment we are in the soup, full fathom five + we have been brought there by follies which we are still committing + which will drown us altogether if we do not mend our ways quickly.
What this war has demonstrated is that private capitalism – that is, an economic system in which land, factories, mines + transport are owned privately + operated solely for profit – does not work.
It cannot deliver the goods.
This fact had been known to millions of people for years past, but nothing ever came of it, because there was no real urge from below to alter the system + those at the top had trained themselves to be impenetrably stupid on just this point.
Argument + propaganda got one nowhere.
The lords of property simply sat on their bottoms + proclaimed that all was for the best.
Hitler's conquest of Europe, however, was a physical debunking of capitalism.
War, for all its evil, is at any rate an unanswerable test of strength, like a try-your-grip machine.
Great strength returns the penny + there is no way of faking the result.

Some chroniclers of the time said Da Vinci had experimented with unstable paints that had rapidly degraded, leaving the painting irreparably damaged.
But Seracini said documents show that at least the centerpiece was admired and copied for decades, until Vasari began his work at Palazzo Vecchio.
Vasari himself, who wrote biographies of several artists including Leonardo, would have been loath to destroy Leonardo's work.
He is known to have salvaged other art by leaving works cocooned between walls when he made renovations, the researcher said.

14.Jan.2007 https://www.cannonfire.blogspot.com/ I'll let Orwell have the floor again. This time, the quote will reflect his actual views. These words appeared in his Notes on Nationalism : Much of the propagandist writing of our time amounts to plain forgery. Material facts are suppressed, dates altered, quotations removed from their context and doctored so as to change their meaning. Permalink
14.Jan.2007 https://www.cannonfire.blogspot.com/ What kind of person routinely engages in such tactics? Who are these people? Twenty years ago, they did not exist within our major media; today, they are the media. How did they achieve their august positions? Those who sneer at the notion of conspiracy should explain how dozens of right-wing hacks can spout the same meme at the same time, often in the exact same words, cued by an unseen conductor. That chorus of calumny testifies to the existence of an arrangement -- of a conspiracy.
14.Jan.2007 https://www.cannonfire.blogspot.com/ Oscar Wilde's observation:
Quotation can be slander
If you gerrymander.
The trick is easy and effective. That's why the right does it all the damn time .
I make this point as a response to the right-wing spin machine's attack on Nancy Pelosi. Her remarks to Condi Rice made perfect sense -- when viewed in context. Indeed, Pelosi was downright eloquent. Yet sans context and rearranged, her words were made to seem heartless.
The best writing on the matter comes from Brad Friedman, here and here.
But the Rovian hordes are not the only ones at fault here: Even the New York Times has transfigured Pelosi into a heartless harpy.

"Gut 20 Red and Anarchist Skinheads (RASH-Skins) tauchten am 14.

Kinoankündigung: "Erstaufführung - The Yes Men
O.m.U.; USA 2003, Regie, Buch & Kamera: Regie: Dan Ollman, Sarah Price, Chris Smith; 80 Min.
Rund dreihundert Mitverschwörer besitzen die Yes Men weltweit.

The government's mining of information from public- and private-sector databases for clues to terrorism and crime is widespread and federal agencies should regularly report to Congress on such activities, lawmakers said Wednesday. "The challenge playing out across the broader Middle East is more than a military conflict," President Bush said last night. "It is the decisive ideological struggle of our time." Markos "Kos" Moulitsas begs to differ:
I can't take anyone bellowing crap like "decisive ideological struggle of our time" seriously when they refuse to call for the sort of national sacrifice that a real "decisive ideological struggle of our time" would demand.
If Bush and his pals truly believe the fate of Western civilization hangs in the balance, they should show they mean it. Mobilize the country. Call for a draft. . . .
And yeah, of course they won't go anywhere near a draft. They don't believe in their war that much, enough to kill them electorally for a generation. But if the struggle is so dire and dark, why not do something as tame as repeal their precious tax cuts for the wealthy?

Impeaching, prosecuting Nixon could have elevated the nation - by Amy Goodman, Seattle Post-Intelligencer
Excerpt: Rather than explain Watergate, we hear the same chorus from all the networks, that the nation needed to move beyond Watergate, needed to "heal," and that the pardon, while controversial, was needed.
The pundits agree that prosecuting Nixon would have led the country in a downward spiral.
But there is another scenario. Impeachment and/or prosecution could have shown Americans that no person is above the law, that all governments must be held accountable.
Are we still going to support Israel if they use nuclear weapons? - by Cenk Uygur, The Huffington Post
Excerpt: If we condone Israel using a nuclear weapon against a Muslim country, then we will not have a "war on terror" anymore, we will have the war against Islam that some of the conservative nut-jobs in this country have been hoping and pushing for. Do you know that there are one billion Muslims in the world? One billion.
Comment: It's well-known that Israel has nuclear weapons + increasingly common knowledge that Israel has plans to use those weapons.
In light of this, the silence from the Bush-Cheney administration makes it pretty dang obvious that this criminal White House would indeed support Israel's use of nukes. Helen & Harry Highwater PERMANENT LINK
13.Jan.2007 What if American forces attack Pakistan? - by Fahd, Chowrangi
Excerpt: Had somebody told Iraqis even in late 80's that America would attack them, they would have ridiculed him at great lengths. Had somebody even merely mentioned to Afghans in 90's that after Russia, US will attack their country, they would have considered him crazy. If somebody tells us Pakistanis today that America will attack us in future, what will we do?
Comment: Note that such an attack isn't far-fetched at all. There have existed contingency plans for an attack in the event that the US puppet leader there falls, for years now -- due to the Pakistani nuke arsenal + how bin Laden or others might get a piece of it (there's been several assassination and coup attempts). There's also the possibility of an attack if nuclear war suddenly looked likely between Pakistan and India -- which has almost happened once already, a few years back. And lastly, if the puppet strays too far from Bush's orders, that too could cause an attack. JR Mooneyham PERMANENT LINK

"An American strike in Iran is essential for our existence," says Israeli General
Excerpt: The general urges the Israeli lobby to turn to Hillary Clinton and other potential presidential candidates in the Democratic Party so that they support immediate action by Bush against Iran.
The lobby must also approach the Europeans, he adds, so Bush won't find himself isolated + he calls for Israel to "clandestinely cooperate with Saudi Arabia so that it also persuades the U.S. to strike Iran."
As Scott Ritter says, a U.S. war in Iran will be a war made in Israel.
Attack on Iran could bring devastation to Arab world
Excerpt: The effect would also be devastating on US-Arab relations, on Israel's long-term security, on the flow of oil from the Gulf, on the oil price, on the economies of the industrial world + on the already highly fragile dollar. And yet, some influential voices argue that the only way the US can hope to "win" in Iraq is to destroy Iran.
Israel plans nuclear strike on Iran
Excerpt: Israel has drawn up secret plans to destroy Iran's uranium enrichment facilities with tactical nuclear weapons.
Two Israeli air force squadrons are training to blow up an Iranian facility using low-yield nuclear "bunker-busters", according to several Israeli military sources.

Did We Just Declare War on Iran?
Decoding this week's sound bites.
By Shmuel Rosner
Donald Rumsfeld's tenure as secretary of defense is quickly fading from memory, but yesterday, as his successor shuttled from briefing to hearing, one of Rumsfeld's famous aphorisms came to mind: If you can't solve a problem, enlarge it.
Coming from Gates, it sounded technical rather than slick. "We are beginning to move aggressively to try + identify + root out the networks that are involved in helping to bring Iranian-supplied [bombs] into Iraq," Gates said. If you can't solve Iraq, enlarge it. While you were sleeping, the war with Iran might have begun. To continue reading, click here.

In Jurisprudence. Emily Bazelon outlines ways Congress could stop the war if it wanted to. Instead of merely passing a resolution expressing disapproval, Democrats could invoke some options with real bite. One option would be to unauthorized the war--or reauthorize it on a limited basis. "The idea is that the reasons we thought we were going to war--Saddam's supposed weapons of mass destruction and alleged operational relationship with al-Qaida--have nothing to do with the current conflict," Bazelon argues. Congress could also cut off money, attach conditions to money, or set a time limit for withdrawal or redeployment. In The Big Idea. Jacob Weisberg argues that Congress won't stop the war because of "learned helplessness." In a classic experiment, Weisberg writes, "dogs subjected to repeated electrical shocks would prostrate themselves and whine, even when escaping the abuse lay within their power. As with canines, so with congressmen." Despite their power to influence the direction of the war, Democrats are acting "like onlookers at the scene of a disaster, mysteriously paralyzed and unable to act."

13.Jan.2007 House passes prescription drug reform. - Nico -
The House this afternoon passed legislation to repeal the Bush administration-backed provision of the 2003 Medicare prescription drug law that forbids Medicare from negotiating lower prices for seniors. “The 255 to 170 vote wasn’t enough to override a threatened veto from President Bush, who said he won’t accept the measure in its current form. Supporters said the government could save $96 billion over 10 years by negotiating for drugs bought in bulk.”
13.Jan.2007 Official U.S. Military Dictionary Includes ‘Escalation,’ Not ‘Surge’ - Nico -
The official Department of Defense Dictionary of Military and Associated Terms offers new evidence in the debate over Iraq terminology. As MoveOn.org’s Adam Green notes, the Pentagon’s dictionary has no entry for “surge” but does have an entry for “escalation”:
escalation
(DOD) A deliberate or unpremeditated increase in scope or violence of a conflict.
ThinkProgress has argued that media outlets are misleading Americans when they use the term “surge” to describe President Bush’s new Iraq proposal.
As we documented Wednesday, when “surge” was first adopted by the mainstream media
00.Nov.2006, the term was specifically defined as a “temporary,” “short-term” increase in U.S. forces. In fact, the most prominent advocates of escalation all reject a short-term increase in U.S. forces + the Bush administration will not specify the length of the current policy. “I think no one has a really clear idea of how long that might be,” Defense Secretary Gates said yesterday.

13.Jan.2007 After Negotiating India Nuclear Deal, State Dept. Official Gets Lucractive Job Lobbying For India - Amanda -
Stephen G. Rademaker, U.S. assistant secretary of state for arms control, is leaving the State Department for a lucrative lobbying job at the firm of Barbour Griffith & Rogers.
While assistant secretary of state, Rademaker negotiated a controversial deal allowing the USA to sell nuclear technology to India, which is not a member of the important nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty. Critics argued that the Bush administration “abandoned the one incentive states have to stay in the NPT, without providing an alternative framework to sustain the effort to control proliferation.”
Less than a month after that deal was ratified by Congress during its lame duck session
00.Dec.2006 , Rademaker is leaving the State Department to join Barbour — which lobbied on behalf of the Indian government for the nuclear pact.
00.Sep.2005 Barbour signed a one-year, $700,000 contract with India to work on “developing, refining and expanding relationships between Indian officials and the U.S. foreign policy-making apparatus in the Executive + Legislative Branches.” Mainly though, Barbour was one of two firms hired by the Indian government with the aim of “pushing the [nuclear] deal through Congress.”

President Bush’s address at Fort Benning, GA, yesterday, “received a less enthusiastic reception than has been the case on his past visits to military bases to promote his Iraq policy.” The 300 soldiers who joined Bush were prohibited from talking with reporters afterward, to “ensure that there would be no discordant notes.”
U.S. troops “launched two raids on Iranian targets in Iraq yesterday,” detaining five Iranians and confiscating “vast amounts of documents and computer data.” U.S. officials said the raids “are part of a new U.S. intelligence and military operation launched last month against Iran.”
Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) “has quietly backed away from his pre-election demands that the White House turn over potentially embarrassing documents relating to its handling of the Hurricane Katrina disaster in New Orleans.”
Al-Qaeda is “strengthening itself across the Middle East, North Africa and Europe” and cells are “rebuilding their strength” in Pakisan, according to outgoing National Intelligence Director John Negroponte.
75: %age of Americans who think President Bush should have to get congressional approval before he escalates the war in Iraq, according to a new CBS News poll.
The House of Representatives is expected to pass a bill today repealing “a Republican-approved ban on letting the government negotiate with manufacturers for lower prices ” for prescription drugs for 23 million seniors. President Bush announced he will veto the legislation.
“Iraq is the only major U.S. conflict, except for the 1846-48 Mexican-American War, in which citizens haven’t been asked to make a special financial sacrifice ,” Bloomberg reports. “President George W. Bush opposes tax increases, even as the costs escalate far beyond predictions and he calls for more troops.”
“Top officials at the Internal Revenue Service are pushing agents to prematurely close audits of big companies with agreements to have them pay only a fraction of the additional taxes that could be collected, according to dozens of I.R.S. employees who say that the policy is costing the government billions of dollars a year.”
Bloggers “ will be allowed to cover the criminal trial of former White House staffer Lewis ‘Scooter’ Libby alongside reporters from traditional media outlets.” The arrangement is the “first for a high-profile court case.” Sheldon Snook of the U.S. District Court in Washington noted, “Bloggers are part of the media landscape and if we were to ignore bloggers, we would be ignoring reality.”

That cumulative limit is now lifted; the remaining limit is on the length of any single mobilization, which may not exceed 24 consecutive months.”

The New York Times reported [18] on
April 13, 2005, Posada requested political asylum in the USA through his attorney.
He is being held on accusations he entered the country illegally across the Mexican border.
On May 3, the Venezuelan Supreme Court approved an extradition request for him.
Speaking the same day in Washington, D.C., State Department Assistant Secretary, Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs Roger Noriega stated that Posada might not have been in the USA.
Noriega added that charges against him "may be a completely manufactured issue."
However declassified FBI and CIA reports show that the agencies suspected his involvement in the airline bombing within days of its occurrence. [4] [5]

00.Apr.2005 -After his release from prison in Panama- Posada sought political asylum in the USA.
Venezuela, where he had broken out of prison in the 1980s, has formally requested Posada's extradition, [14] as has Cuba. [15]
A Department of Homeland Security judge ruled that he cannot be deported because of alleged threat of torture in Venezuela. [16]
22.Mar.2006 -According to Cuba's official newspaper on- the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) informed Posada that he would continue to be detained on the grounds that he continues "to present a danger to the community and a flight risk" and claimed that he has "a history of engaging in criminal activity, associating with individuals involved in criminal activity + participating in violent acts that indicate a disregard for the safety of the general public".
With Guillermo Novo Sampoll, Orlando Bosch and Gaspar Jiménez Escobedo, he founded the Coordination of United Revolutionary Organizations (CORU). [17]

Contras and Central America
In Central America, Posada was assigned as deputy to Félix Rodríguez, a CIA operative who
00.000.1967 had overseen the capture + execution of Ernesto "Che" Guevara .
The pair were to coordinate drops of military supplies to the Contras, a paramilitary collective opposed to the leftist Sandanistas in Nicaragua.
Posada was well paid for his role, receiving $3000 per month plus expenses from U.S. Major General Richard Secord, who was directing operations for Oliver North. [6] [10]
The subsequent Iran-Contra investigations cast light over U.S. operations in the region + several of Posada's connections, including Félix Rodríguez were asked to testify.
Posada remained in El Salvador during the hearings before signing up as a security advisor to the Guatemalan government. He also remained in contact with Cuban exile groups during this period. [6]
00.Feb.1990 Posada was shot whilst sitting in his car in Guatemala city by unknown assailants that Posada believed were Cuban assassins.
In his memoir, Posada said that his recovery and medical bills were paid by the Cuban American National Foundation, with additional payments from Richard Secord. [11]
Though recuperating in Honduras, the FBI believed that Posada was responsible for 41 bombings in the country, Posada himself admitted to planning numerous attacks against Cuba + seeking assistance from the Honduran military to aid his cause, which was not forthcoming. [6]

The research reveals that most people's New Year's resolutions are doomed to failure, most self-help books have it completely wrong when they say perfectionism is at the root of procrastination + procrastination can be explained by a single mathematical equation. The research is apparently the culmination of 10 years work. However, no indication was given of how much time was spent putting it off before it was begun." From the article: "Essentially, procrastinators have less confidence in themselves, less expectancy that they can actually complete a task... Perfectionism is not the culprit. "Despite past efforts of the 1970s and 1980s, the USA remains one of only three countries (others are Liberia and Myanmar) that does not use the metric system. Staying with imperial measurements has only served to handicap American industry and economy. Attempts to get Americans using the Celsius scale, or putting up speed limits in kilometers per hour have been squashed dead. Not only that, but some Americans actually see metrication efforts as an assault on 'our way' of measuring. I personally deal with European scientists on a daily basis + find our lack of common measurement to be extremely frustrating. Are we so entrenched with imperial units that we cannot get our fellow citizens to simply learn something new? What are those of us who wish to finally see America catch up to the rest of the world supposed to do? Are there any organizations that we may back, or any pro-metric legislators who we can support?"

The winds have stirred up 10 to 12 metre waves ... After arriving at the scene they survey the ocean bottom to assess whether the contour has changed + the degree of sediment movement. Then the traditional tools are brought out. A rope with a grapnel on the end is played out, down into the depths + towed over the sea floor until tension registers on a graph on the ship, indicating contact has been made with the cable. Today's fibre optic cables are just 21 millimetres in diameter."

13.Jan.2007 Global Warming Only a Theory, Says School Board - Zonk 245 - BendingSpoons writes
"A Seattle school board has placed a moratorium on screenings of 'An Inconvenient Truth', having found its subject matter too controversial. Echoing the language of the evolution debate, the school board found that students must be told that global warming is only a theory and presented with an opposing viewpoint. The ban was prompted by the complaints of a parent: '"Condoms don't belong in school + neither does Al Gore. He's not a schoolteacher," said Frosty Hardison, a parent of seven who also said that he believes the Earth is 14,000 years old. "The information that's being presented is a very cockeyed view of what the truth is ... The Bible says that in the end times everything will burn up, but that perspective isn't in the DVD."'"
13.Jan.2007 Expensive U.S. Spy Satellite Not Working - Zonk 230 - Reuters article about some trouble the U.S. is having communicating with a spy satellite.
The sensor package was launched last year by the U.S. National Reconnaissance Office + is worth hundreds of millions of dollars. It has apparently hung in a low orbit for months now + efforts to communicate with it have been unsuccessful. From the article: "The official said the problems were substantial and involved multiple systems, adding that U.S. officials were working to reestablish contact with the satellite because of the importance of the new technology it was meant to test and demonstrate. The other source said the satellite had been described to him as 'a comprehensive failure.' There was no suggestion by either of the sources that the satellite had been purposely damaged as part of a terrorist attack. Another government official said he had no information about any attacks on U.S. satellites."
13.Jan.2007 Gates Foundation Revokes Pledge to Review Portfolio - Zonk 206 - NewsCloud writes
"After the LA Times reported that the Gates Foundation often invests in companies hurting the very communities Bill and Melinda want to help, the Seattle Times reported the foundation planned 'a systematic review of its investments to determine whether it should pull its money out of companies that are doing harm to society'. Shortly after that interview, the Gates Foundation took down their public statement on this and replaced it with a significantly altered version which seems to say that investing responsibly would just be too complex for them and that they need to focus on their core mission: 'There are dozens of factors that could be considered, almost all of which are outside the foundation's areas of expertise. The issues involved are quite complex...Which social and political issues should be on the list? ... Many of the companies mentioned in the Los Angeles Times articles, such as Ford, Kraft, Fannie Mae, Nestle + General Electric, do a lot of work that some people like, as well as work that some people do not like. Some activities might even be viewed positively by some people and negatively by others.'"
13.Jan.2007 Mars Probe May Have Spotted Sojourner Rover - Zonk 137 - Maggie McKee writes
"NASA's eagle-eyed Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter may have spotted the tiny, toaster oven-sized Sojourner rover just a few meters away from its companion, the Mars Pathfinder lander. It appears to have crawled there in an attempt to re-establish contact with the lander after the lander had already died. But the pictures aren't clear enough to definitively ID the rover + it's possible Sojourner simply took off on its own. If it were miraculously still alive after 10 years, it could be 3 kilometers away from Pathfinder — and probably impossible to find, even with MRO."
13.Jan.2007 Does Income Inequality Matter? - Cliff 974 - theodp is concerned about the following:
"Alarmed by Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein's record-setting $53M bonus, Charles Wheelan (aka The Naked Economist) argues that income inequality matters. Wheelan notes that the Gini Coefficient (a measure of income inequality) for the U.S. has been moving away from countries like Japan + Sweden + closer to that of Brazil, where the murder rate is 5X that of NYC + crime is materially impacting GDP."
13.Jan.2007 MPAA Caught Uploading Fake Torrents - CowboyNeal 485+ - "The MPAA + other anti-piracy watchdogs have been caught trapping people into downloading fake torrents, so they can collect IP addresses + send copyright infringement letters to ISPs. The battle between P2P networks and copyright holders seems to be a never ending battle. It will be interesting to see how much the anti-piracy groups practices change once they begin begin selling movies and TV shows legally on bittorrent.com."
13.Jan.2007 IBM Breaks Patent Record, Wants Reform - kdawson 107+ - "IBM set the record for most patents granted in a year for 2006.
At the same time, IBM points out that small companies earn more patents per capita than larger enterprises + pushes for reform to address shortcomings in the process of patenting business methods:
'The prevalence of patent applications that are of low quality or poorly written have led to backlogs of historic proportions + the granting of patents protecting ideas that are not new, are overly broad, or obvious.'
And the company has been committing itself to a new patent policy:
'Key tenets of the policy are that patent quality is the responsibility of the applicant; that patent applications should be open to public examination + that patent ownership should be transparent; +
that business methods without technical content should not be patentable.'"
13.Jan.2007 Women "Advertise" Fertility - kdawson 287+ - Dik Zak writes with word of a paper published in the journal Hormones and Behavior.
A study found that women take greater care over their appearance when they are at peak levels of monthly fertility.
The researchers took two photos of each of 30 women, one near ovulation + one at the other end of her cycle.
They then showed the paired photos (with faces obscured) to a group of observers, who were asked to judge in which photo the women were trying to look more attractive.
The observers chose the "high fertility" subject nearly 60% more of the time than would be expected by chance, according to the NewScientist.com writeup.
13.Jan.2007 Wikileaks — Anonymous Whistle-Blowing - kdawson 141+ - too_old_to_be_irate about a site that word got out on before they were ready.
Wikileaks aims to be an anonymous + uncensorable repository of leaked documents, posted for commentary by interested parties.
It's expected to go live in a month or two.
From the site:
"Wikileaks is developing an uncensorable version of Wikipedia for untraceable mass document leaking and analysis.
Our primary interests are oppressive regimes in Asia, the former Soviet bloc, Sub-Saharan Africa + the Middle East, but we also expect to be of assistance to those in the west who wish to reveal unethical behavior in their own governments and corporations.
We aim for maximum political impact;
this means our interface is identical to Wikipedia + usable by non-technical people.
We have received over 1.1 million documents so far from dissident communities + anonymous sources."
