There had been no clarification as to how it was intercepted and no independent corroboration of its authenticity. He also found it remarkable that a letter between two al-Qaeda leaders should spell out strategy in such an explanatory way, as if these basic details were the subject of doubt. A spokesman for the Director of National Intelligence, which released the letter on Tuesday, said it "had been looked at by multiple agencies over a protracted period of time". There was "strong consensus as to its authenticity".

Abgase hielten sich dort über Jahrzehnte.
Die Japaner glauben dennoch an den Erfolg ihres Himmelsboliden. Bharat Aggarwal und seine Kollegen behandelten in ihrer Studie krebskranke Mäuse entweder mit Curcumin, dem gängigen Brustkrebs-Medikament Paclitaxel oder einer Kombination beider Substanzen. Ein Teil der insgesamt 60 Mäuse blieb unbehandelt und diente als Kontrollgruppe.
Nach der Entfernung des Brusttumors entwickelten fast alle unbehandelten Mäuse Metastasen in der Lunge. Etwas geringer war die Zahl der Metastasen bei den mit Paclitaxel behandelten Nagern. Bei der dritten Gruppe erlebten die Wissenschaftler eine Überraschung: Die Zahl der Metastasen bei den Mäusen, die Curcumin oder der Kombination beider Wirkstoffe bekommen hatten, lag "signifikant niedriger", schreiben die Forscher im Fachmagazin "Clinical Cancer Research" (Nr. 11, Bd. 20).

Kundgebung gegen Rassismus in Washington
Zehntausende Afroamerikaner hatten gestern in Washington gegen Rassismus und Armut demonstriert. Die Teilnehmer reisten aus zahlreichen Bundesstaaten der USA an, um gegen die anhaltende Benachteiligung der Schwarzen im eigenen Land zu protestieren.
Die Kundgebung fand unter dem Motto "Millions More Movement" statt - in Anlehnung an eine der größten Kundgebungen der schwarzen Bürgerrechtsbewegung vor genau zehn Jahren, die das Motto "Million Man March" hatte und die Schwarzen in den USA aufrief, ihr Schicksal in die eigenen Hände zu nehmen.
Prominente afroamerikanische Verbände hatten dazu aufgerufen, sechs Wochen nach dem Hurrikan "Katrina" ein Zeichen der Solidarität mit den Opfern zu setzen. Mehrere Redner warfen der US-Regierung vor, den überwiegend schwarzen Bewohnern von New Orleans nach dem Wirbelsturm nicht geholfen zu haben.

Salamanca - Der 15. Iberoamerikanische Gipfel im spanischen Salamanca hat zwei US-kritische Resolutionen zugunsten Kubas verabschiedet. Die Staats- und Regierungschefs aus 19 lateinamerikanischen Staaten sowie aus Spanien und Portugal forderten in einer der beiden Resolutionen die USA auf, ihre 1962 gegen das kommunistische Kuba verhängte "Wirtschafts-, Handels- und Finanzblockade" zu beenden.
In einer weiteren Resolution heißt es, der unter Terrorverdacht stehende Exilkubaner Luis Posada Carriles, der sich derzeit in den USA aufhält, müsse vor Gericht gebracht werden. Posada soll 1976 Drahtzieher eines Bombenanschlags auf eine kubanische Passagiermaschine gewesen sein, bei dem 73 Menschen starben. Die US-Justiz entschied, dass der ehemalige CIA-Agent in den Vereinigten Staaten vor einer Auslieferung an Kuba oder Venezuela geschützt ist.
Der kubanische Staatschef Fidel Castro war dem am Samstag beendeten Gipfeltreffen ferngeblieben. Die spanischen Medien zitierten einen Sprecher der US-Botschaft in Madrid, der sich "beunruhigt" über die Resolutionen zeigte. EU-Kommissionspräsident José Manuel Barroso sagte während des Gipfeltreffens, er hoffe, die Resolutionen würden nicht als "Zeichen der Toleranz gegenüber den Menschenrechtsverletzungen in Kuba interpretiert". Die EU hatte deswegen vor zwei Jahren diplomatische Sanktionen gegen Havanna verhängt.

Die Zeit ist reif, die isolierten Lösungen durch eine Gesamtstrategie der Arbeitszeitverkürzung aufzuheben. Erst dann kann es vermieden werden, dass soziale Konzessionen erpresst werden. Die augenblickliche Defensive des Neoliberalismus darf nicht verschlafen werden. Die politischen Voraussetzungen sind gerade jetzt nicht schlecht, um die 30-Stunden-Woche in Verbindung mit einem seriös konzipierten Grundeinkommen in ein politisch mobilisierendes Projekt zu verwandeln, das Gewerkschaften den nötigen Rückhalt verschafft.
Die zahlreichen kleinen Zirkel der Zivilgesellschaft müssten ihre alternativen Ideen und Projekte jetzt offen zur Diskussion stellen. Mit einer erstarkten Zivilgesellschaft ist es durchaus möglich, alsbald - in einem Jahr, vielleicht auch in zwei Jahren - eine rot-rot-grüne Regierung mit einem sozial-ökologischen Programm, das an den Menschen orientiert ist, durchzusetzen, notfalls durch Neuwahlen. Eine politisch angeschlagene Bundeskanzlerin Merkel dürfte diesen Prozess eher beschleunigen. Schon aus diesem Grunde konnte ein strategisch denkender Schröder einer Angela Merkel nur den Vortritt lassen, um Handlungsspielraum zu gewinnen, seine abgewählte Agenda 2010 über Bord zu werfen und die Zeichen der Zeit zu verstehen - sofern er dazu wirklich in der Lage ist.

The Triumph of “Turd Blossom” Karl Rove—given the above nickname by our jocular President—is an extraordinarily keen student of American psychology and history. He is well aware of the back story to contemporary political fixtures like the focus group—a technique innovated by Edward Bernays. Consequently, it doesn’t take too much effort to discern the afterimage of Bernays’s teachings in Bush’s rhetoric. In Crystallizing Public Opinion , Bernays related how governments and advertisers can “regiment the mind like the military regiments the body.” This discipline can be imposed because of “the natural inherent flexibility of individual human nature.” He also instructed that the “average citizen is the world’s most efficient censor. His own mind is the greatest barrier between him and the facts. His own ‘logic proof compartments,’ his own absolutism are the obstacles which prevent him from seeing in terms of experience and thought rather than in terms of group reaction.”

So was Walter Lippmann, a former socialist turned liberal who would become the dean of mid-20th Century American journalism. These revolutionary psychological insights had actually been percolating in France and Great Britain since the first years of the 20th Century. They were duly appropriated by Hitler, who wrote in Mein Kampf (1925): “But it was not until the [First World] War that it became evident what immense results could be obtained by a correct application of propaganda. Here again, unfortunately, all our studying had to be done on the enemy side…” In Bernays’s 1965 memoir Biography of an Idea, he acknowledged that Crystallizing Public Opinion significantly influenced Josef Goebbels. In post-World War II America, Bernays provided his services to the United Fruit Company and the Eisenhower administration. In 1954, the democratically elected New Deal-style Arbenz government in Guatemala began expropriating—with compensation—some of that corporation’s largely fallow lands. In due time, Bernays launched a media blitz which made palatable the (clandestine CIA-backed) coup which would overthrow the “communist” government.

Tony Shaffer, the man who revealed the DIA data mining operation which fingered Mohamed Atta well before 9/11 (and at a time when the FBI says Atta wasn't even in the country)? First, Cheney's office squelched Shaffer's testimony. Then Shaffer himself was punished and smeared. The charges refer to such ghastly crimes as "improperly flashing military identification while drunk and stealing pens."

The network resists definition by race, religion or region. Anti-Semites believe that the "club" is controlled by Israel; Arab-bashers believe that the club is controlled by Saudi Arabia. Neither view is correct. The group has no leadership, no headquarters, no single ideology. It is far more amorphous and elusive than Fleming's SPECTRE was. It has less internal cohesion than does (say) the mafia. Its ranks include individuals who despise and oppose each other. Yet they all know each other. For they are bound by the lure of power.

They will conduct covert operations that most "legitimate" intelligence agencies would reject as too risky. Trento calls "the rogue CIA" -- an amorphous group whose members have come to despise the legitimate CIA.
In brief: In the space between WWII and his appointment to head the CIA, Allen Dulles pioneered the use of private intelligence networks. The Agency came to rely on various "cooperative" businessmen, who received infusions of capital and other aid in exchange for services rendered. One such businessman was George H.W. Bush. In the Vietnam era, the CIA came to rely on local "businessmen" who trafficked in drugs; the drug trade funded the secret war in Laos.
Then came the 1970s -- the era of CIA investigations, gutsy journalism, the JFK controversy, and the reformist presidency of Jimmy Carter. Carter's DCI fired covert operatives en masse . They formed an off-the-books covert network, replete with its own banks. Anti-Carter forces within the Agency and the Pentagon relied on this secret network, which in turn formed alliances with shadowy figures throughout the globe.
Many operative within this loose network weren't spooks -- not officially. But they were + are, "spooked up" in their associations and personal histories. Perhaps the best descriptor is intriguer .

The Downing Street Memo, leaked to the press last May, proved that Bush's stated reasons for war were actually pretexts. The author of the memo -- which should have caused Bush much more trouble than it actually did -- was one Matthew John Rycroft, heretofore identifed as a "foreign policy aide" to Blair.
Not quite. He's actually an MI6 agent. (Go here and scroll down.) Apparently, Rycroft -- Matthew Rycroft -- has been stationed in Geneva, Paris, Washington and Sarajevo.

Where Gannon and Rove intersect Some of the best writing on Jeff Gannon's possible role in Plame-gate can be found in the resurrected Is Bush Wired? blog (not to be confused with BushWired, which I mentioned yesterday. The headlines are pretty damned clever -- "The Rove That Dare Not Speak Its Plame," "Rove's Other Dummy" -- and the analysis is pretty juicy.
The main thesis: Rove and Gannon have a closer relationship than most suspect + Rove (or an underling) may even be writing Gannon's blog. The argument hinges Gannon's history of plagiarism, which speaks to an inability to articulate his own thoughts. Yet in his blog, "Gannon" occasionally displays an uncanny ability to express Rove's POV, using very Rovian terminology. Here's Gannon:

Now we learn more from Rycroft. A new book called Lawless World elides over his spooky history, instead referring to him as Tony Blair's personal aide. Thanks to Rycroft, we now have "fly on the wall" access to notes detailing phone conversations between Blair and Bush. The results should, if given proper publicity, prove even more humiliating to Dubya.
Rycroft would not be in a position to do this if he did not have the go-ahead from higher-ups. I am convinced that MI6 is now actively trying to deep-six the Iraq misadventure.

This suggests that they could potentially be used to reduce anxiety and depression, Zhang says. He adds that the research might help to create new cannabinoid-based treatments.
"I think it's a very exciting study," says Amelia Eisch, an addiction researcher at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. "It makes marijuana look more like an antidepressant and less like a drug of abuse."
Eisch adds that much more work must be done before scientists can reach any definitive conclusions about the benefits and costs of marijuana. First and foremost, researchers need to establish that THC has the same positive effects as the synthetic HU210. Then they must develop more sophisticated experiments to firm up the correlation between neuron growth in the hippocampus and emotional balance.

Die türkische Regierung hat, um gegen einen möglichen Ausbruch einer Grippe-Epidemie gewappnet zu sein, eine Million Packungen des Grippemittels Tamiflu bestellt. Soldaten wurden in die Region abkommandiert, um bei der Keulung von Geflügel zu helfen. Ob das Virus, das in Rumänien wütet, auch vom Typ H5N1 ist, wird sich erst nach zusätzlichen Untersuchungen klären.
