26.Oct.2006 New York Bar May Crack Down on Blogging Lawyers - Zonk 35 - An anonymous reader writes

"While you might not guess it from watching late night TV, advertisements by lawyers are regulated by a web of regulations intended to protect potential clients from deceptive claims in such ads. Generally, these rules require lawyers to submit their ads to a review board, often with a filing fee paid with each new advertisement. The New York bar has proposed new rules which would define blogging as advertising. Should these rules be enacted, any New York lawyer who blogs on any legal topic in New York would be required to submit any new blog post to the New York Bar for review. For New York lawyers who write frequently updated blogs, this could force them to make multiple (and potentially expensive) reports to the New York Bar every single day."

New Campaign Tactic - Google Bombing - Zonk 180 - jeian writes

"My Direct Democracy, a liberal group blog, is trying out a new campaign tactic — Google bombing. From the New York Times article: 'Searching Google for Peter King, the Republican congressman from Long Island, would bring up a link to a Newsday article headlined King Endorses Ethnic Profiling.' Google's policy has typically been to not intervene and let the algorithms work by themselves, but could this change if Google-bombing becomes a common tactic?"

26.Oct.2006 Speaker Hastert Lies About Leader Pelosi - Nico

Yesterday, embattled House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-IL) released a statement attacking House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) over immigration:

Democrat Leader Pelosi’s plan is to leave our borders open, grant blanket amnesty and provide Social Security benefits to illegal immigrants. Is THAT their plan? Democrat Leader Nancy Pelosi has NEVER visited the border. She claims to understand the needs of those on the front lines but has never visited those agents and offers no solutions.

First, Hastert is fabricating Pelosi’s position on immigration. Pelosi has consistently backed extensive new border security measures and comprehensive immigration reform.

Second, Hastert’s claim that Pelosi has never visited the border or met with border agents is false. Today, Rep. Silvestre Reyes (D-TX), a 26-year veteran of the United States Border Patrol, issued a statement discussing Pelosi’s trip to El Paso, Texas, in March:

House Democratic Leader Pelosi not only understands the importance of border security, she understands the dynamics and importance of trade and commerce to our border region and our country. She understands the critical implications that failures on the part of both the Bush Administration and the Republican Congressional leadership have had on our border communities and in making our country less safe even five years after 9/11.

How do I know? I have been at the border with her. She has taken the time not only to visit but to listen.

26.Oct.2006 Rumsfeld To Iraq Critics: ‘This Is Complicated Stuff…So You Just Ought To Back Off,’ ‘Relax’ - Think Progress

At his news conference yesterday, President Bush repeatedly mentioned “benchmarks” for progress in Iraq, using the word 13 times. “But he did not discuss the consequences of the Iraqi government missing those targets. Such a question, he said, was ‘hypothetical.’”

At the Pentagon press conference this afternoon, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld was asked what would happen if the Iraqi government failed to meet the “benchmarks.”

Rumsfeld first responded that “it is not complicated,” but just seconds later said, “This is complicated stuff. It’s difficult. We’re looking out into the future. No one can predict the future with absolute certainty.”

He added, “So you ought to just back off, take a look at it, relax, understand that it’s complicated, it’s difficult.” Watch it: Digg It! Transcript:

QUESTION: Sir, what I don’t understand about the benchmark plan — if we can call it that — is what happens if and when the Iraqi government fails to meet the timelines, projections, whatever you want to call them, for some of the major benchmarks?

I mean, we’ve been told that they’re not given ultimatums, but we’ve also been told by the president in recent days that U.S. patience is not unlimited.

But I don’t understand. There must be consequences or responses built into this plan. Can you address that at all?

RUMSFELD: Well, it’s a political season. And everyone’s trying to make a little mischief out of this + make — turn it into a political football + see if we can’t get it on the front page of every newspaper and find a little daylight between what the Iraqis say or someone in the USA says or somebody else in the USA says.

And it is not complicated. I’ve explained it two or three times. The president did an excellent job of explaining it yesterday.

And the situation is this. It is that the USA, in the persons of our ambassador and the Embassy and General Casey and his team, have been, over a period of time, in continuous discussions with the Iraqi government at various levels. And they’ve been discussing the way forward through the rest of this year and next year. That’s a perfectly logical thing for them to do.

[…]

Now, you’re looking for some sort of a guillotine to come falling down if some date isn’t met. That is not what this is about.
This is complicated stuff. It’s difficult. We’re looking out into the future. No one can predict the future with absolute certainty.

So you ought to just back off, take a look at it, relax, understand that it’s complicated, it’s difficult. Honorable people are working on these things together. There isn’t any daylight between them. They’ll be discussing this and discussing that. They may have a change there, a change here. But it’ll get worked out.

26.Oct.2006 Ohio GOP Smears Al Franken In Press Release With Doctored Photo, Fabricated Quote - Amanda

Yesterday, the Ohio Republican Party sent out a news release (full text here) attacking Rep. Sherrod Brown (D) for enlisting the support of comedian Al Franken:

It is not surprising that Sherrod Brown is enlisting the help of a Hollywood liberal, who like him, is so far out of the mainstream of Ohio values. What is troubling is that Brown would solicit support from someone [Franken] who compared conservatives to Nazis “who should drink poison and die.”

The quote used in the news release is taken from Bernard Goldberg book, 110 People Who Are Screwing Up America, in an alleged interview between Goldberg and Franken. But in his book, Goldberg makes it clear that the exchange is completely fictional. The Ohio Republican Party represented it as fact.

The news release was accompanied by this photograph, showing Franken dressed up like a baby bunny, wearing adult diapers and clutching a fluffy white teddy bear.

Andy Barr, director of Franken’s Midwest Values PAC, confirmed, “The picture is a fake.” The Ohio Republican Party used a 2004 AP photo of Franken for the doctored image: Digg It!
26.Oct.2006 Snow: With Black Candidates, ‘There Is Always An Attempt…To Attribute Something To The Race Card’ - Nico

A recent ad by the Republican National Committee targeting Rep. Harold Ford (D-TN) was criticized by various parties, including former Republican senator William Cohen, as a “very serious appeal to a racist sentiment.”

As Nitpicker noted, White House Press Secretary Tony Snow was asked on Tuesday if he thought the ad was racist. Snow said no, then claimed:

I mean, maybe I’m just quaint in this day and age. But no, I think there is always an attempt when you have got an African-American candidate to try to attribute something to the race card.

Watch it:

The ad is still being shown.

The Tennessean reported yesterday that the ad “will continue airing in the Chattanooga area, despite the head of the Republican National Committee’s statement today that the ad was off the air.” Digg It!

SNOW: I don’t think so. I mean, maybe I’m just quaint in this day and age. But no, I think there is always an attempt when you have got an African-American candidate to try to attribute something to the race card.

But no, I don’t.

Bush’s ‘Fence Bill’ Doesn’t Actually Create Fence - Nico

Bowing to anti-immigration hardliners in the House, President Bush today held a White House ceremony celebrating the signing of the “Secure Fence Act.” Bush told reporters, “The bill authorizes the construction of hundreds of miles of additional fencing along our southern border.”

Bush is right, the bill does “authorize” the constrution of a new fence. But that doesn’t mean the bill pays for it. As the Washington Post reported earlier this month:

No sooner did Congress authorize construction of a 700-mile fence on the U.S.-Mexico border last week than lawmakers rushed to approve separate legislation that ensures it will never be built, at least not as advertised, according to Republican lawmakers and immigration experts.

… [S]hortly before recessing late Friday, the House and Senate gave the Bush administration leeway to distribute the money to a combination of projects — not just the physical barrier along the southern border. The funds may also be spent on roads, technology and “tactical infrastructure” to support the Department of Homeland Security’s preferred option of a “virtual fence.”

The “Secure Fence Act” has everything to do with motivating the right-wing base + nothing to do with securing America’s borders or passing comprehensive immigration reform.

Rumsfeld Agrees Terrorists Are Saying ‘We’ve Got an Election in Two Weeks in America…We Want to Change Horses Over There’ - Judd

In an interview with North Dakota radio host Scott Hennen, Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld said that “it would be logical” that terrorist groups are ramping up violence in Iraq and elsewhere to give liberals a boost in November’s election. Here’s how Hennen described the situation:

Here they are, getting up every day saying, “ We’ve got an election in two weeks in America, gang + we want to change horses over there because we don’t like the folks we’re having to deal with now; they’re a little tough on us. So let’s get out there and let’s make some noise. “

Hennen added, “I don’t get the sense the American people have a sense they’re being played in that fashion.” Rumsfeld agreed, telling Hennen, “Probably not. It’s hard. No one likes to think they’re being manipulated. They believe that they can make their own judgments and the like.”

Rumsfeld’s claims are baseless. President Bush admitted this weeked that there isn’t “any intelligence” that suggests terrorists are trying to influence U.S. elections. Digg It!

26.Oct.2006 October 26, 2006 - Think Progress

In a radio interview Tuesday, Vice President Cheney confirmed that detainees were subjected to water-boarding, the first such admission by a Bush administration official. “It’s a no-brainer for me,” Cheney said.

$10.49 billion: Exxon’s third-quarter profit, “its second highest total ever.”

The Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington filed a complaint asking the IRS to investigate Kansas attorney general Phill Kline’s (R) efforts to politicize the use of churches for his reelection effort. CREW’s Melanie Sloan notes that the IRS has not been even-handed in its enforcement, often targeting liberal organizations but taking few actions against conservatives.

At a public signing ceremony today, President Bush will sign a bill authorizing 700 miles of new fencing along the U.S.-Mexico border. “The decision to have a public ceremony is a reversal for the Bush administration, which had appeared reluctant to tie itself so publicly to the enforcement-only measure.”

According to a secret intelligence report, the CIA offered to let Germany have access to one of its detained citizens in return for Berlin’s assistance in silencing EU protests about the clandestine torture flights program. The classified documents make clear that the U.S. sought Morocco’s participation in the rendition program.

In Baghdad’s violent Washash neighborhood, which is predominantly Shiite with pockets of Sunni residents, U.S. troops suspect “that Shi’ite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr’s Mahdi Army are conducting what amounts to an ethnic cleansing campaign .”

United Nations agencies report that “ thousands of Iraqi women are being taken advantage of by unscrupulous sex worker traffickers seeking to exploit young girls’ desperate socio-economic situation for profit.”

“A month after NATO forces claimed a major victory in fierce fighting in southern Afghanistan, large numbers of Taliban forces returned to the region Tuesday and battled NATO forces.” The Taliban has “regrouped, helped by a booming illegal opium trade and growing frustration at the slow pace of reconstruction and a lack of jobs or a real economy.”

26.Oct.2006 Frist: Ignore the Iraq war. - Nico

26.Oct.2006 Limbaugh on Michael J. Fox: ‘I Take Back None of What I Said’ - Judd

Rush Limbaugh is sticking to his claim that Michael J. Fox is exaggerating the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease — by “acting” or “not taking his medications” — in an advertisement promoting stem cell research.

The media falsely reported that he “apologized” to Fox. On his radio show today, Limbaugh said he regrets nothing. Watch it:

26.Oct.2006 Parkinson Foundation Debunks Limbaugh’s False Smears on Michael J. Fox - Nico

Rush Limbaugh has repeatedly attacked actor Michael J. Fox for appearing in television campaign ads promoting stem cell research. Fox, who suffers from Parkinson’s disease, appears “visibly racked by tremors” in the ads.

“He is exaggerating the effects of the disease,” Limbaugh told listeners yesterday. “He’s moving all around and shaking and it’s purely an act. … This is really shameless of Michael J. Fox. Either he didn’t take his medication or he’s acting.”

According to the National Parkinson’s Foundation, Limbaugh has no idea what he’s talking about. The Washington Post reports:

[I]n an interview in Ladies Home Journal’s September edition, Fox said he was taking a medication that causes jerking, fidgeting and other abnormal involuntary movements, known as dyskinesia. Fox said he was taking another medication to lessen those side affects.

An official of the National Parkinson Foundation said movements like those exhibited by Fox are the result of taking medication to treat the disease, which would otherwise result in rigidity.

“ When you see someone with those movements, it’s not because they have not taken medication but because they probably have taken medication for some time ,” the official said.

“If you don’t take the medication, then you freeze.”

Limbaugh continued the assault today, calling Fox’s video “an attack ad” that is “filled with disinformation about embryonic stem cell research.”

Ergo, when dreams mean nothing -- when words and images are rendered meaningless -- our lives reflect these dismal states.

26.Oct.2006 Bush’s Useful Idiots -The Strange Death of Liberal America -By Tony Judt

26.Oct.2006 Stealing the Midterms and the Power of Myth -By Mike Whitney
There are only two weapons in the imperial tool-chest; force and deception. I expect that the anticipated Democratic landslide will be preempted by massive voter fraud accompanied by some type of “searing event”; that way the fantastical outcome of a GOP victory can be neatly folded into a larger and all-pervasive “myth”.

26.Oct.2006 Recipe for a Cooked Election-By Greg Palast
A nasty little secret of American democracy is that, in every national election, ballots cast are simply thrown in the garbage. Most are called "spoiled," supposedly unreadable, damaged, invalid. They just don’t get counted. This “spoilage” has occurred for decades, but it reached unprecedented heights in the last two presidential elections. In the 2004 election, for example, more than three million ballots were never counted

Lieberman, a Russian immigrant, is every bit the populist and racist politician he is portrayed as being. Lieberman, however, is more outspoken than most in publicly advocating for this position.

26.Oct.2006 https://cannonfire.blogspot.com/2006/10/roves-ruse-revealed-and-updated.html When they steal this one, I am afraid there will be riots. People hate Bush in South Carolina, a traditionally red state!

As far as "other polls", when did America become a two cast system?? Under Rove(r) and Bush right?

26.Oct.2006 https://cannonfire.blogspot.com/2006/10/roves-ruse-revealed-and-updated.html UPDATE : The first comment below, from Dr. Stern, asks the obvious question about Rove's smug knowledge of, um, special, hidden factors that might, um, influence the outcome of the upcoming elections. And within minutes of reading the comment, I found this excellent analysis of the situation from the perspective of states and contests most vulnerable to, um, manipulation. In addition to listing Greg Palast's voter suppression strategies, this thorough and edifying piece breaks down the current statistical likelihood of Democrats winning the House (99% likelihood) and Senate (74% likelihood).
WARNING: "The" REAL math statistics are included in this article (not likely Karl's). Don't be daunted, as it is quite readable + not that hard to understand. And just for the record, I'm fairly savvy with stats + the reasoning behind these analyses is quite sound. And also for the record, the basic math that supports this analysis + supports the logic of exit polls and global warming and the lack of logic behind balancing the budget while cutting taxes, it's fundamentally all the same. 1 + 1 will always equal 2. The likelihood of getting heads when you flip a coin will always be 50%. The likelihood that all, or even enough of the predicted Democratic victories turn Republican on the 7th? Astronomical.

26.Oct.2006 https://cannonfire.blogspot.com/2006/10/roves-ruse-revealed-and-updated.html The interviewer, Robert Siegel, asks him what values he has been encouraging the volunteers to share with voters + this is what Rove says: Well, for example, look, one -- the war on terror. Do you support in a time of war reauthorization of the Patriot Act, the terrorist surveillance program? There's a vote in the House; 88 % of the Democrats in the House voted against giving additional authority to a program to listen in on suspected al Qaeda figures calling or trying to contact people inside the USA. The vote on the CIA interrogation bill -- where, again, over 80 % of the Democrats in the House and Senate voted against a program of the CIA interrogating high-value targets like Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the mastermind of the 9/11. There it is, folks. He's convinced the WOT is going to win this one for the Gipper AGAIN!!

The3 Republicans CONTROL everything, the images, the talking points, etc. I have wondered from the get go.... are they setting us up? I have no clue for what but can only imagine.....Bush has sold us out to some new arrangement here in North America and my guess is this is to make it look like the democrats gave the country away. However, there are three parties in DC already, Repubs, Demos, and NEOCONS> It is the NEOCONS who need removal from our system. Neocons do not share our American values. The Republicans were taken over in a coup..... perhaps they are trying to reclaim their party but I do not trust anyone wearing the scarlet R. # posted by Anonymous : 3:43 Is this how Republicans normally do business?

25.Oct.2006 Snow Falsely Claims Bush Said ‘Stay The Course’ Only 8 Times (Actually, It’s At Least 30) - Think Progress

On Sunday, President Bush told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos that his Iraq policy has “never been stay the course.” (Today, Rumsfeld disagreed, calling suggestions they were backing away from the phrase “nonsense.”)

Moments ago on Fox News, White House Press Secretary Tony Snow said “we went back and looked today and could only find eight times where he [Bush] ever used the phrase stay the course.” Watch it:

Apparently, the White House research team isn’t very good at “the Google.” ThinkProgress has documented 30 times that Bush has used the phrase to describe his policy in Iraq:

BUSH: We will stay the course, we will help this young Iraqi democracy succeed + victory in Iraq will be a major ideological triumph in the struggle of the 21st century. [8/30.2006 ]

BUSH: Stay the course also means don’t leave before the job is done. And that’s - we’re going to get the job done in Iraq. [8/11.2006 ]

BUSH: As a matter of fact, we will win in Iraq so long as we stay the course. [7/11.2006 ]

BUSH: And I saw people wondering whether the USA would have the nerve to stay the course and help them succeed. [6/19.2006 ]

BUSH: If we don’t lose our nerve, if we stay the course, someday down the road, an American President will be working with democratically-elected leaders in the broader Middle East at the table to keep the peace. [3/24.2006 ]

BUSH: Some critics continue to assert that we have no plan in Iraq except to, “ stay the course .” If by “ stay the course ,” they mean we will not allow the terrorists to break our will, they are right. If by “ stay the course ,” they mean we will not permit al Qaeda to turn Iraq into what Afghanistan was under the Taliban - a safe haven for terrorism and a launching pad for attacks on America - they are right, as well. If by “ stay the course ” they mean that we’re not learning from our experiences, or adjusting our tactics to meet the challenges on the ground, then they’re flat wrong. [11/30.2005 ]

BUSH: We will stay the course, we will complete the job in Iraq. [8/4.2005 ]

BUSH: And so the United States of America will stay the course and we will complete the task. We’ll help Iraq develop a democracy and the world will be better off for it. [11/21.2004 ]

BUSH: My message is that - is that we will stay the course and stand with these people so that they become free. [9/23.2004 ]

BUSH: We will stay the course so that they can develop an army and police force of their own so they can defend themselves. [9/13.2004 ]

BUSH: We must stay the course until the job is done. [8/13.2004 ]

BUSH: But Americans are used to hard work when it comes to a cause greater than ourself. And that’s what we’re doing. And we’ll stay the course. [4/20.2004 ]

BUSH: And that’s why we’re going to stay the course in Iraq. [4/16.2004 ]

BUSH: And we will stay the course in Iraq so that his son did not die in vain. [4/15.2004 ]

BUSH: And my message today to those in Iraq is: We’ll stay the course ; we’ll complete the job. [4/13.2004 ]

BUSH: We will stay the course in Iraq. [4/6.2004 ]

BUSH: So we’ve got tough action in Iraq. But we will stay the course. [4/5.2004 ]

BUSH: You know, I told the family how much we appreciated his sacrifice - he was killed in Iraq - and assured him that we would stay the course. [4/5.2004 ]

BUSH: I met with the family of a fellow who - who was killed in Iraq. … I told the - I told the dad + the mom + the wife that we’d stay the course. [4/5.2004 ]

BUSH: This country will stay the course and get the job done. [4/2.2004 ]

BUSH: We will stay the course until the job is done, because a free Iraq in the heart of the Middle East will make the world more peaceful. [1/23.2004 ]

BUSH: And we will stay the course until the job is done. [1/12.2004 ]

BUSH: We will stay the course until the job is done, Steve. And the temptation is to try to get the President or somebody to put a timetable on the definition of getting the job done. We’re just going to stay the course. [12/15/03]

BUSH: I was able to assure them that we were going to stay the course and get the job done, but I also reminded them what I said publicly, that it’s up to them to seize the moment, to have a government that recognizes all rights, the rights of the majority and the rights of the minority, to speak to the aspirations and hopes of the Iraqi people. [11/27/03]

BUSH: We will stay the course + as more and more Iraqis realize freedom is precious and freedom is a beautiful way of life, they will assume more and more responsibilities, not only for security, but for humanitarian reasons, as well. [11/14/03]

BUSH: It’s in the national interest of the USA that a peaceful Iraq emerge. And we will stay the course in order to achieve this objective. [10/27/03]

BUSH: And we’ll just stay the course. [10/22/03]

BUSH: We talked about Iraq. And I told him and assured him that the USA would stay the course because we believe freedom is on its way to the Iraqi people. [7/14/03]

BUSH: We’re making steady progress. A free Iraq will mean a peaceful world. And it’s very important for us to stay the course, and we will stay the course. [7/10/03]

BUSH: Not only does the war on terror go on, but we’ve got a lot of work to do in Iraq. And we’re going to stay the course until the job gets done. [6/5/03]

Video Transcript :

GIBSON: Tony Snow, Thanks very much for joining us. Is it true the president has abandoned the line we’re staying the course and the new explanation of Iraq is there is a time line in place?

SNOW: This a great story, because we went back and looked today and could only find eight times where he ever used the phrase stay the course.

Rumsfeld Agrees Bush Is ‘Not Backing Away From Stay The Course’ - Think Progress

Faced with widespread disappoval of its Iraq policy, the Bush administration launched a coordinated effort this week to convince Americans it has never had a stay-the-course strategy in Iraq. On Sunday, President Bush said, “We’ve never been stay the course.” White House Counselor Dan Bartlett disavowed the label again yesterday.

But in a radio interview today with Sean Hannity, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld confirmed that the Bush administration isn’t planning to shift its strategy. Rumsfeld called media reports about Bush’s reversal “nonsense,” and said “of course” Bush is “not backing away from ’stay the course.’” CLICK HERE TO LISTEN

RUMSFELD: Aww, that’s nonsense.

HANNITY: He’s not backing away from staying the course?

RUMSFELD: Of course not. The concern was that it gave opponents the chance to say, “Well, he’s not willing to make adjustments,” and of course, just the opposite is true.

"Today's quantum computers are not sophisticated enough to do anything malicious to your online bank account; the field is in its infancy. The Sun Had Sisters - Zonk 128 [TheBORG] writes to mention a Space.com

article about the Sun's departed solar siblings. Our own medium-sized yellow star was far from alone when it was formed, with hundreds of fellow solar bodies and a supernova to keep it company. From the article: "The evidence for the solar sisters was found in daughters--such as decayed particles from radioactive isotopes of iron--trapped in meteorites, which can be studied as fossil remnants of the early solar system. These daughter species allowed Looney and his colleagues to discern that a supernova with the mass of about 20 suns exploded relatively near the early Sun when it formed 4.6 billion years ago; and where there are supernovas or any massive star, you also see hundreds to thousands of sun-like stars, he said. The cluster of thousands of stars dispersed billions of years ago due to a lack of gravitational pull, Looney said, leaving the sisters 'lost in space' and our Sun looking like an only child ever since, he said."

US Slips Again In Freedom of the Press Ranking - ScuttleMonkey 837+ npwa

Reporters Without Borders has released their annual worldwide press freedom index. While developing nations like Haiti and Mauritania continue to gain ground developed nations like France, Japan + the US continue their downward spiral. From the article: "The USA (53rd) has fallen nine places since last year, after being in 17th position in the first year of the Index, 00.000.2002. Relations between the media and the Bush administration sharply deteriorated after the president used the pretext of 'national security' to regard as suspicious any journalist who questioned his 'war on terrorism.' The zeal of federal courts which, unlike those in 33 US states, refuse to recognise the media's right not to reveal its sources, even threatens journalists whose investigations have no connection at all with terrorism."

Administration Sends Troops Info on Foley Replacement, Doesn’t Mention Other Candidates - Nico

Last week, U.S. troops received messages from the State Department and the Pentagon explaining how to vote in the congressional race in ex-Rep. Mark Foley’s (R-FL) former district.

The emails provided detailed instructions explaining how to vote for Foley’s replacement, Joe Negron, but failed to even mention the two other candidates in the race:

On September 29th, Mark Foley resigned from the United State House of Representatives. He also withdrew as the Republican Candidate for the House of Representatives in Florida’s 16th District.

Pursuant to Florida Law, the Florida Republican Party nominated Joe Negron as the Republican Candidate in the 16th District replacing Foley. Pursuant to Section 100.111(4) of Florida Statute, Foley’s name will remain on the ballot for both absentee and regular ballots. Any votes cast for Foley will count towards the total of the substitute candidate.

Voters from Florida’s 16th Congressional District should be aware that any votes cast for Mark Foley will be counted toward the total of Joe Negron. Additionally, voters who wish to cast a vote for Joe Negron should cast their vote for Mark Foley.

Read the full text of one of the State Department emails HERE.

There is no mention in this email of the other candidates in the race, Democrat Tim Mahoney and independent Emmie Ross. As a result, Mahoney had to issue a separate message to soldiers yesterday explaining that troops could also vote for him or Ross. Mahoney’s letter also included instructions on how soldiers could vote for Joe Negron.

24.Oct.2006 O’Reilly: Taliban Resurgence In Afghanistan Is A ‘Myth’ - Amanda

Yesterday on Fox News, host Bill O’Reilly tried to argue that Afghanistan has been “successful” and that “there’s no danger at all of the Taliban reclaiming that country.” At the worst, he said, the Taliban will be “annoying.” When his guest, Harvard University professor Sarah Sewall, pointed out that people on the ground disagree, O’Reilly dismissed her, stating, “I talked to everybody.” Watch it:

Supreme NATO commander Gen. James Jones recently stated that Afghanistan is close to becoming a “narco state,” whose $3 billion dollars in annual drug profits are financing the Taliban. Council on Foreign Relations Afghanistan expert Dr. Barnett Rubin said that Afghanistan Afghanistan is at a “tipping point” and that the Afghan people believe “trends are going in the Taliban’s favor.” Gen. David Richards, a British officer who commands NATO’s 32,000 troops, warned that unless coalition forces begin stepping up reconstruction efforts, 70 % of the country could decide to back the Taliban.

Doesn’t sound like O’Reilly talked to everybody. Digg It! Full transcript below:

O’REILLY: But look, we were successful in Afghanistan. And nobody thought –

SEWALL: Well, the jury’s still out on Afghanistan.

O’REILLY: — overthrow the Taliban in that way. So we were successful.

SEWALL: Unfortunately, Afghanistan’s going backwards.

O’REILLY: That’s a myth.

SEWALL: — which I think speaks –

O’REILLY: That’s a myth.

SEWALL: — to part of the problem with the focus of effort on Iraq. We risked losing the progress that has been made in Afghanistan.

O’REILLY: Now you’re just - that’s not true. There’s always going to be a Taliban insurrection.

SEWALL: It is true.

O’REILLY: As long as they have mountain - now it’s not. Every military analyst working for our team says most of that country is pacified.

SEWALL: Maybe you should be talking to the people on the ground –

O’REILLY: I talked to everybody.

SEWALL: — because they’re concerned about the situation.

O’REILLY: You’re just parroting the left wing line that America doesn’t know what it’s doing.

SEWALL: I’m parroting conversations with commanders who are in uniform serving in Afghanistan.

O’REILLY: All right, so have I. Our information is that there’s no danger at all of the Taliban reclaiming that country, none. They’ll be annoying. There will be a guerrilla warfare. It will not happen. I believe that.

Cohen Warns Conservatives Using ‘Purely Overt Racist Approach’ To Attack Rep. Ford - Nico

A new right-wing ad targeting African-American Rep. Harold Ford (D-TN), who is running for Senate in Tennessee, features “a scantily clad white woman winking and inviting [Ford] to ‘call me.’” The woman “speaks in a hushed, suggestive tone and says that she met Ford at ‘the Playboy party.’”

Yesterday on CNN, former Republican senator and Defense Secretary William Cohen called the ad a “very serious appeal to a racist sentiment” and said it reminded him “of what happened in North Carolina with Harvey Gantt, a purely overt racist approach.” Watch it:

Some history on Harvey Gantt:

00.000.1990, locked in a tight race with an African American Democrat, former Charlotte mayor Harvey Gantt, [Sen. Jesse] Helms aired a final-week TV ad that showed a pair of white hands crumpling a rejection letter, while an announcer said, “You needed that job and you were the best qualified. But they had to give it to a minority because of a racial quota.”

Full transcript:

COHEN: I think the Republicans have to be careful, also, in terms of not engaging in conduct. And I was watching the — the Tennessee race, specifically. It reminded me of what happened in North Carolina with Harvey Gantt, a purely overt racist approach.

BLITZER: You are talking about the new RNC ad which has this white woman talking about Playboy and the — the African-American candidate, Harold Ford Jr., the Democratic candidate.

(CROSSTALK)

COHEN: It’s — to me, at least as I watch that, is a very serious appeal to a racist sentiment.

And when the question is always asked, why — he would be the first African-American since Reconstruction elected to the Senate, you say, well, why is that the case? So, why is the South different? Why would they not elect someone…

BLITZER: So, you’re a former Republican senator. Is the RNC playing the racial card against Harold Ford in Tennessee right now?

COHEN: I think they are coming very close to it, if not doing it exactly. And I think they ought to stop it. I think that they have a candidate + discuss the — the issues on the merits + not get into that kind of personal type of an attack.

While the power cut may have been an inconvenience for the media outlets and for Khalilzad — who “kept talking in obscurity for three or four minutes until order was restored” — it’s part of daily life for residents in Baghdad. Electricity levels in the city are at an all-time low. Residents now receive an average of just 2.4 hours per day, compared to 16-24 hours before the U.S. invasion.

Bush Administration Hypes ‘Timeline’ For Iraq, Policy Stays The Course - Judd

The American public wants a timeline for withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq. In response, the Bush administration has started throwing around terms like “timeline” and “timetable.” Watch some excerpts from today’s press conference with the U.S. ambassador to Iraq, Zalmay Khalilzad, and Gen. George W. Casey Jr.:

Unfortunately, this rhetoric is not accompanied by any change in strategy. The Iraqis have agreed to a 12-18 month “timeline” to control violence in Iraq. But if they don’t meet the benchmarks they’ve agreed to, there are no consequences. The “timeline” is disconnected from a drawdown of U.S. troops.

Casey noted, “I said a year or so ago that if the conditions on the ground continued the way they were going, that I thought we’d have fairly substantial reductions in coalition forces.”

That plan was thrown out in “early July.”

Casey made it clear that if the latest effort to get the Iraqis to assume more responsibility doesn’t work out, he’s ready to reinvent the wheel again. This is the same approach the Bush administration has been pursuing for more than three years. Staying the course provides very little incentive for Iraqis to assume control of their own security problems.

53. America’s ranking on Reporters Without Borders’s global press freedom index, dropping from 17th place 00.000.2002. “Relations between the media and the Bush administration sharply deteriorated after the president used the pretext of ‘national security’ to regard as suspicious any journalist who questioned his ‘war on terrorism.’”

“Several governments around the world have tried to rebut criticism of how they handle detainees by claiming they are only following the U.S. example in the war on terror,” U.N. anti-torture chief Manfred Nowak said yesterday.

19 %. Number of Americans who believe the USA is winning the war in Iraq, an all-time low. Fifty-four % of Americans believe the U.S. economy is getting worse.

The natural world is being degraded “at a rate unprecedented in human history,” and if current consumption levels continue, “two planets would be needed to meet global demand by 2050.” The new report by the World Wildlife Fund also found that the world’s species have declined by 30 % since 1970.

The House ethics committee “spent more than six hours Monday grilling” Scott Palmer, “Hastert’s chief of staff for more than 20 years.” “Kirk Fordham, Foley’s former chief of staff, said he alerted Palmer several years ago to his concerns about Foley’s friendships with pages.”

“The FBI and Justice Department appear to be expanding their probe into the Jack Abramoff lobbying scandal in hopes of nabbing another member of Congress and aides,” U.S. News reports.

House International Relations Chairman Henry Hyde (R-IL) has written a letter to Donald Rumsfeld saying “that the U.S.-supported poppy eradication program in Afghanistan is a failure ,” and that “record opium poppy harvests show efforts to target farmers are not working.”

“ Former Enron chief executive Jeffrey Skilling, who gained infamy as the man who orchestrated one of the largest corporate frauds in history, has been sentenced to more than 24 years in prison.” Skilling will also “fork over $45 million in restitution should he lose his appeal.”

And finally: Wyoming Libertarian congressional candidate Thomas Rankin said Rep. Barbara Cubin (R-WY) threatened to slap him after a televised debate. “Barbara walked over to me and said, ‘If you weren’t sitting in that chair, I’d slap you across the face.’ That’s quote-unquote,” Rankin said. Rankin has multiple sclerosis and uses an electric wheelchair.

24.Oct.2006 https://www.cannonfire.blogspot.com/ Hastert and Sibel This is turning into one of those days when all my posts tell you to go read other bloggers. But you cannot count yourself truly educated about current affairs if you don't read lukery's latest on Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert.
24.Oct.2006 https://www.cannonfire.blogspot.com/ Sibel is trying her damnedest to get the story out...
She currently has at least two veteran FBI agents, with first hand information, who are willing to go on the record and confirm the entire story (Hastert, ATC, ATAA, Livingston Group...).
All we need is one reporter. How can we force the media to pay attention to the true "Hastergate" story? Lukery has a plan.
Go here and scroll to the bottom. Permalink
24.Oct.2006 https://www.cannonfire.blogspot.com/ The FBI has tapes indicating the bribing of Hastert + investigator David Rose has spoken to those who know what is on those tapes. In essence, one claimed bribe episode involved a congressional resolution recognizing the Aremenian genocide, an event which the Turks hope to wipe from memory. Hastert announced his support for this measure 00.000.2000. But what is significant, the resolution had passed the Human Rights Subcommittee of the House. It passed the International Relations Committee, but on the eve of the House vote, the full House vote, Dennis Hastert withdrew the resolution...
Well, whether or not these allegations have substance is not something that I am able to state with any knowledge, but it is said that in the wiretaps that were translated by Sibel Edmonds, reference was made to this very controversial question of the House vote. One of the Turkish targets of these wiretaps claimed that the price for getting Dennis Hastert to withdraw the resolution would be $500,000. Now, I do emphasize there's no evidence at all that he received such a payment, but that is what is said to have been recorded in one of the wiretaps.

24.Oct.2006 https://www.cannonfire.blogspot.com/ In a recent interview quoted by lukery, Daniel Ellsberg said the following: Sibel says that suitcases of cash have been delivered to the Speaker of the House, Dennis Hastert, at his home, near Chicago, from Turkish sources, knowing that a lot of that is drug money.
Now these are pretty inflammatory allegations, let's say + it's note-worthy that they haven't even been picked up by the mainstream press.

From the first article: "...10 weeks into the trial, [University of Rochester researchers] discovered brain tumours had begun to grow in every animal treated... By definition, human embryonic stem cells have the almost mythical, immortal power to grow and divide indefinitely as they become the various tissues that make up the body. As a result, scientists have always known that any stem cell therapy could result in an uncontrolled growth of cells that could give rise to cancer."

Seems he is none other than Ken Duberstein, who cleaned up the White House after Iran-Conra as Reagan's COS, and has gone on to - among many other political things - serve on the Boards of several huge mega-corporations. Seems, right after Armitage "realized" he was the leak to whom Novak referred ("not a partisan gunslinger") and contacted Powell, they together contacted Duberstein. Not the DOJ, not the FBI, not the WH. Duberstein. Elizabeth does a great job of exploring why this is important, further supporting her notion that Armitage is playing the standard organized crime scapegoat to diminish the damage, demonize Fitz + deflect attention from the core of the case, the lies coming out of Cheney's office to get us into this godforsaken war. All these distractions working as a scheme to make the Christmas pardon oh so much easier.

Able Danger "debunked" Xymphora has a
must-read analysis of the DOD's report debunking the claims that the Able Danger "data mining" effort had targeted the 911 hijackers -- secifically Mohammed Atta -- before the event. I can quibble with X on a few points, but his basic stance is quite sound. One of the witnesses (names redacted by the report writers) to the infamous chart thus recalls the image of Mohammed Atta: He recalled that shortly after 11.Sep.2001, when he first saw photographs identifying Mohammed Atta as one of the terrorists, he recognized him. Mr. XXXXXX testified, ‘Yeah and I'm looking and I said, Jesus, I recognized his picture instantly.. .. Yeah, I went to my chart to compare and I said there he is.’ That's just one of many such identifications. Yet the DOD, using techniques that would have embarrassed even the Warren Commission, has concluded that all such witnesses are lying. For what earthly reason? Permalink # posted by Joseph : 10:17 AM 2 comments -: I spent a lot of time at one point trying to sort out the claims involved in Able Danger and could never make them add up in any way that seemed plausible.
For example, none of the people involved seemed to agree on when the chart was created (late 1999? early 2000? summer 2000?), or on when and on whose orders the files were destroyed.
Weldon has stated that he gave away his only copy of the chart on September 25, 2001, but he displayed what sounds like the same chart to Congress the next May,
during a speech titled "DEFENDING PRESIDENT BUSH REGARDING KNOWLEDGE OF 11.Sep.2001."
I did not find out about this until October of 2001, after the attack on the trade center. A year before, special forces command developed their own mini version of a data processing or collaborative center with very limited capabilities. But what they did, Mr. Speaker, they did a profile of al Qaeda 1 year before 9-11.
Mr. Speaker, here is the chart, the unclassified chart of what special forces command had 1 year before 9-11. Interesting. The entire al Qaeda network is identified in a graphic chart with all the linkages to all the terrorist groups around the world.
Note that here Weldon states he did not even find out about the chart until October 2001, a month after he supposedly handed over his copy.
Xymph tries to get around some of the problems by suggesting that the Atta on the Able Danger chart was a different Atta from the one the CIA was surveilling in Germany 00.000.2002. But in that case, which of them was the Atta whose doings in Florida have been obsessively scrutinized by Daniel Hopsicker?
Usually, when suppressed information comes out, the effect is to make clear certain things that have previously been murky. The Able Danger story just adds several new levels of murk. That may be the major reason why I have real problems with it.

23.Oct.2006 Viking Mars Mission Might Have Missed Life - Hemos 117
Johan Louwers writes "The Viking mars mission 00.000.1976 might have missed signs of life due to not completely working analysis equipment. GC-MS on the Viking 1976 Mars missions did not detect organic molecules on the Martian surface, even those expected from meteorite bombardment. This result suggested that the Martian regolith might hold a potent oxidant that converts all organic molecules to carbon dioxide rapidly relative to the rate at which they arrive. This conclusion is influencing the design of Mars missions. We reexamine this conclusion in light of what is known about the oxidation of organic compounds generally and the nature of organics likely to come to Mars via meteorite."

Challenging the Child Online Protection Act - narramissic (posted by kdawson) 66 narramissic writes,

"Today in Philadelphia a federal trial got underway that will decide whether COPA is constitutional. The outcome will determine whether operators of Web sites can be held accountable for failing to block children's access to inappropriate materials. An article on ITworld outlines the arguments of the foes in the battle: the DOJ and the ACLU. If I were a betting woman, I'd put my money on the ACLU. Parents, schools, etc. have to take responsibility for the internet usage of children in their charge." Two courts have found COPA unconstitutional and the Supreme Court has upheld the ban on its enforcement, while asking a lower court to examine whether technological measures such as filtering could be as effective as the law in shielding children; thus this trial. The article does not mention that it was the DOJ's preparation for the trial that was behind its earlier request that search companies turn over their records — a request that only Google refused.

Bush Admits There Is No Evidence Iraqi Insurgents Are Trying To Influence U.S. Elections - Amanda

In the past week, top Bush administration officials have been suggesting that insurgents in Iraq are increasing attacks in order to influence the U.S. midterm elections. Some highlights —

Vice President Cheney, 10/17.2006 :

I was reading something today that a writer — I don’t remember who — was speculating on increased terrorist attacks in Iraq attempting to demoralize the American people as we get up to the election. And when I read that, it made sense to me. And I interpreted this as that the terrorists are actually involved and want to involve themselves in our electoral process, which must mean they want a change.

President Bush, 10/18.2006 :

There’s certainly a stepped up level of violence + we’re heading into an election. … They are trying to not only kill American troops, but they’re trying to foment sectarian violence. They [Al Qaeda] believe that if they can create enough chaos, the American people will grow sick and tired of the Iraqi effort and will cause government to withdraw.

White House Press Secretary Tony Snow, 10/19.2006 :

[I]t is possible, although we don’t have a clear pathway into the minds of terrorists, it is possible that they are trying to use violence right now as a way of influencing the elections.

But these claims are completely without any basis in reality. Yesterday on ABC This Week, President Bush admitted to host George Stephanopoulos, “I don’t have any intelligence that says that” insurgents in Iraq are trying to influence the election. Watch it: Full transcript below:

STEPHANOPOULOS: And for the first time the President acknowledged parallels to Vietnam. It came when I asked for his response to ‘New York Times” columnist Tom Friedman’s contention that we’re now seeing an Iraqi version of the Vietcong’s 1968 Tet offensive that turned American public opinion decisively against the war.

BUSH: He could be right. There’s certainly a stepped up level of violence and we’re heading into an election.

STEPHANOPOULOS: So they’re trying to influence the elections?

BUSH: It could be. I don’t know. I haven’t - I don’t have any intelligence that says that.

23.Oct.2006 Specter: ‘We Have To Face The Fact’ That Iraq Is A Civil War - Nico

This weekend on CNN’s Late Edition, Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI) made the case that U.S. troops in Iraq are “being sucked slowly into a civil war with disastrous consequences.”

Sen. Arlen Specter (R-PA) was asked if he agreed with Reed’s view that Iraq is in a civil war. Specter flatly said “yes” and added, “I don’t think there’s any point, Wolf, in hiding the facts. I think we have to face the facts.” Watch it:

Specter’s view mirrors that of many of Iraq’s leaders, U.S. troops in Iraq, and seven in ten Americans.

Full transcript:

SEN. JACK REED: This is a civil war. And we are being sucked slowly into a civil war with disastrous consequences.

BLITZER: Is it a civil war already, Senator Specter, as many of the critics are suggesting?

SPECTER: Yes.

BLITZER: That’s your flat answer. So on this specific point, Senator Specter, you clearly disagree with the president and vice president.

SPECTER: Well, I think it’s a matter of semantics, but when you have the insurgents as violent as they have been + when you have the three major factions in Iraq killing each other + you have the level of violence, I don’t think there’s any point, Wolf, in hiding the facts. I think we have to face the facts.

23.Oct.2006 REPORT: Bush Officials Were ‘Rooting’ For North Korea to Test Nuclear Weapon - Guest

Senior Bush administration officials wanted North Korea to test a nuclear weapon because it would prove their point that the regime must be overthrown.

This astonishing revelation was buried in the middle of a Washington Post story published yesterday. Glenn Kessler reports from Moscow as he accompanies Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice:

Before North Korea announced it had detonated a nuclear device, some senior officials even said they were quietly rooting for a test, believing that would finally clarify the debate within the administration.

Until now, no U.S. official in any administration has ever advocated the testing of nuclear weapons by another country, even by allies such as the United Kingdom and France.

One of these officials may have been Rice herself, Kessler hints. Rice, he reports, “has come close to saying the test was a net plus for the USA.” Rice has been trying to counter the prevailing view that the test was a failure of the Bush administration’s policy.

A factual timeline of the North Korean program traces how policies of containment and engagement slowed and stopped the program, while threats of regime change increased the dangers. The two key failures were the choice to focus on overthrowing the government in Pyongyang rather than stopping the nuclear program + the invasion of Iraq which distracted U.S. attention from the real nuclear dangers and propelled both North Korea and Iran to accelerate their programs.

The revelation that some officials secretly wanted North Korea to test their nuclear weapons is evidence of how the administration’s national security policy has become completely divorced from reality. Joe Cirincione

Transcripts: Video 1

STORM: So, Mr. Bartlett, staying the course is no longer the operative strategy?

BARTLETT: Well, Hannah, it’s never been a stay-the-course strategy. Strategically, we think it’s very important that we stay in Iraq and we win in Iraq. And if we were to cut and run and go and leave that country too early it would be a disaster for American policy.

But what we aren’t doing is sitting there with our heads in the sand. We’ve completely changing and making tactical changes on a week-by-week basis as we respond to the enemy’s reactions to our strategies.

Video 2

BUSH: We will stay the course, we will complete the job in Iraq. [8/4.2005 ]

SNOW: The second thing you do is you stay the course. [7/10.2006 ]

SNOW: But on the other hand, you also cannot be a President in a wartime and not realize that you’ve got to stay the course. [8/17.2006 ]

BUSH: We will stay the course. [8/30.2006 ]

BUSH: We will stay the course until the job is done, Steve. And the temptation is to try to get the President or somebody to put a timetable on the definition of getting the job done. We’re just going to stay the course. [12/15/03]

BUSH: And my message today to those in Iraq is: We’ll stay the course. [4/13.2004 ]

SNOW: People are going to want more of it + that’s why the President is determined to stay the course. April. [8/16.2006 ]

BUSH: And that’s why we’re going to stay the course in Iraq. And that’s why when we say something in Iraq, we’re going to do it. [4/16.2004 ]

BUSH: And so we’ve got tough action in Iraq. But we will stay the course. [4/5.2004 ]

Former German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder writes in a new book that Bush’s frequent references to God in their meetings before the Iraq war had made him wary. “What worried me, despite a relaxed atmosphere to our talks + to a certain degree what made me skeptical was how much it came through that this president saw himself as ‘God-fearing’ and saw that as the highest authority,” he said.

“ Majorities of Iraqi youth in Arab regions of the country believe security would improve and violence decrease if the U.S.-led forces left immediately, according to a State Department poll.”

Senators Richard Lugar (R-IN) and Arlen Specter (R-PA) called yesterday “for direct talks with North Korea aimed at easing a nuclear standoff.” Direct talks are “inevitable,” Lugar said. Specter added, “I think we ought to use every alternative, including direct bilateral talks.”

The Sudan peace agreement signed in May “is in disarray.” The “hardening conflict” is “increasingly taking place along porous borders among some of the least stable countries in Africa, threatening to ignite a wide conflagration in the heart of the continent.”

“Iceland broke a global moratorium on commercial whaling, killing an endangered fin whale for the first time since the 1980s.” Fin whales are on the International Conservation Union’s “red list” of endangered species.

A company headed by Neil Bush — President Bush’s brother — and partly owned by his parents is “benefiting from Republican connections and federal dollars targeted for economically disadvantaged students under the No Child Left Behind Act.”

“Nearly two million people in southern Afghanistan will need food aid this winter because of drought, the UN and Afghan government have warned. … The food shortage is being blamed on intensified fighting against Taliban insurgents in the troubled southern provinces and expanding cultivation of opium poppies instead of food.”

“Rep. Rodney Alexander (R-LA), already enmeshed in the ex-Rep. Mark Foley (R-Fla.) page scandal, now faces a new controversy” as a former staffer has sued Alexander’s chief of staff for “sexual advances,” “ogling and touching,” and other harassment.
23.Oct.2006 The former Iraq expert at the State Department - Faiz said that it is untenable for the the U.S. to stay the course. Wayne White, who was the head of the State Department’s Iraq intelligence section until last year, told the BBC: “The effort can’t be sustained over the long haul, and so we can’t stay a course, I think, that requires years and years more.” He added, “We’re not winning. It’s apparent.”

23.Oct.2006 https://www.spiegel.de/spiegel/0,1518,druck-443917,00.html

23.Oct.2006 https://www.spiegel.de/spiegel/0,1518,druck-443917,00.html
23.Oct.2006 https://www.spiegel.de/spiegel/0,1518,druck-443917,00.html

23.Oct.2006 https://www.spiegel.de/spiegel/0,1518,druck-443917,00.html

23.Oct.2006 https://www.spiegel.de/spiegel/0,1518,druck-443917,00.html

“Ladies and gentlemen, you’ve been working very hard + your task is not over,” he said.

The Rigases and Mulcahey were charged with hiding $2.3 billion in debt at the cable company, deceiving investors and stealing company cash to line their own pockets.

The verdict marked another success in Manhattan for federal prosecutors, who won convictions against Martha Stewart in March and former star technology banker Frank Quattrone in May.

The elder Rigas founded the company 00.000.1952 in tiny Coudersport, Pa. + turned it into one of the nation’s largest cable firms.

While most of the alleged fraud took its form in hidden debt, the trial was also notable for examples of the eye-popping personal luxury that has marked other white-collar trials.

Adelphia officers trial

The founders of Adelphia were charged with securities violations but despite five officers indicted only two (John Rigas + Timothy Rigas) were found guilty [2]; the others were acquitted of some or all the charges [3].

Rigas founded Adelphia with a $300 license 00.000.1952, took the company public 00.000.1986 and built it up by acquiring other systems in the 1990s.

The company collapsed into bankruptcy 00.000.2002 after it disclosed $2.3 billion in off-balance-sheet debt. Federal prosecutors said the Rigases used complicated cash-management systems to spread money around to various family-owned entities and as a cover for stealing $100 million for themselves. A second Rigas son, Michael, former executive vice president for operations, was acquitted of conspiracy and wire fraud 00.000.2005.

However, jurors were deadlocked on certain counts + Michael Rigas is scheduled for a second trial. Former Adelphia assistant treasurer Michael Mulcahey was acquitted of all charges.
