What aggravates me the most about the ABC miniseries is not how they've attacked their critics, how they've distorted Clinton's anti-terrorism efforts (and the Republicans' efforts to block them), or how they build Bush up to be a hero instead of a bumbling incompetant who was too busy playing golf and clearing brush to read a briefing entitled "Bin Laden Determined To Strike Within U.S." + sat for seven minutes after he knew the nation was under attack to be whisked away and make the command decisions.
It's how they portray John O'Neill.
The man on the screen is not the man I knew. He's not the man Don Williams interviewed countless times. He's not the man we both wept for, for a few seconds at least, over the air.
ABC, you are slandering my friend. That, alone, gives me reason to hate you for allowing these lies to go forward.Discuss

09.Sep.2006 Director Defends Accuracy of Path to 9/11: ‘We Have Our CIA Consultants and Clinton Has His’ - Judd - ABC is defending the multiple inaccuracies in Path to 9/11 by stressing parts are fictionalized and not entirely based on the 9/11 Commission Report. But that’s not the position of director David Cunningham. According to Cunningham, critics are simply taking scenes out of context or relying on a competing set of experts. Here’s what Cunningham told The Crimson White, a University of Alabama newspaper: “A lot of these critics haven’t seen the whole thing or, in some cases, any of it,” Cunningham said. “ We have these CNN pundits who haven’t seen it who are taking scenes out of context as examples [of factual inaccuracies in the film].” Cunningham also pointed out that the critics, many of whom are Democrats, are just telling their side of the story. “ We have out [sic] CIA consultants and Clinton has his. Known and documented, the "Islamic terror network" is a creation of the US intelligence apparatus. Several of the terror alerts were based on fake intelligence as revealed in the recent foiled "liquid bomb attack". There is evidence that the several of the terrorist "mass casualty events" which have resulted in civilian casualties were triggered by the military and/or intelligence services. (e.g Bali 2002).

The war on Lebanon, which has resulted in countless atrocities including the destruction of the nation's economy and civilian infrastructure, is "a stage" in a sequence of carefully planned military operations.
Lebanon constitutes a strategic corridor between Israel and North-western Syria. The underlying objective of this war was the militarization of Lebanon, including the stationing of foreign troops, as a precondition for carrying out the next phase of a broader military agenda.
Formally under a UN mandate, the foreign troops to be stationed on Lebanese soil on the immediate border with Syria, will be largely although not exclusively from NATO countries. This military force mandated by the UN Security Council is by no means neutral. It responds directly to US and Israeli interests.
Moreover, the timely withdrawal of Syrian troops, following the 00.Feb.2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri has contributed to opening up a "new space". The withdrawal of Syrian troops served Israeli interests. The timely pullout was of strategic significance: it was a major factor in the timing and planning of the July 2006 IDF attacks on Lebanon.
In the aftermath of the Israeli bombings and the "ceasefire", UN Security Council Resolution 1701, drafted by France + the US in close consultation with the Israeli government, has paved the way for the militarization of Lebanon, under a bogus UN mandate.

09.Sep.2006 Gatekeeper Alex Cockburn Attacks 9/11 “Conspiracy Nuts” By Administrator on Uncategorized In now entirely predictable fashion, lefty gatekeeper Alexander Cockburn has issued a hit piece against nine eleven “conspiracy nuts,” in particular David Ray Griffin, described as “one of their high priests.” According to Cockburn, writing for the subscription-based Nation web site—kudos to the anarchists at Infoshop who filched and reposted it—Griffin’s book, the New Pearl Harbor, is rife with “fundamental idiocy,” especially in regard to the ability of the government to pull off a terrorist attack. Moreover, Cockburn is onboard with Ward Churchill, who tells us Osama + crew, tucked away in a cave situated in one of the most remote + backwater countries on the planet, were indeed behind the attacks + to say otherwise makes one an honorary member of the Ku Klux Klan. Barrie Zwicker tells us we need to wake up the gatekeepers, but nudging Cockburn out of his slumber will be quite a task. For “progressives” such as Cockburn, the USA government is nothing more or less than a habitual bumbler, a lumbering beast unable to get things right. “One central characteristic of the nuts is that they have a devout, albeit preposterous, belief in American efficiency + hence many of them start with the racist premise that ‘Arabs in caves’ weren’t capable of the mission,” writes Alex. “They believe that military systems work the way Pentagon press flacks and aerospace salesmen say they should work. They believe that at 08:14 am, when AA Flight 11 switched off its radio and transponder, an FAA flight controller should have called the National Military Command center and NORAD.” In other words, the flight controller, hired for his or her ineptitude, as the government only interviews and hires incompetents, was busy playing tiddlywinks or sleeping in a bathroom stall when the hijacking occurred. According to FAA regulations, when planes are hijacked the FAA hijack coordinator is contacted and a request is made to provide a military escort. Of course, since the flight controller was probably asleep at the wheel and government systems are terminally broken due to chronic imbecility, Cockburn would have us believe any number of flight controllers either didn’t notice or didn’t find it unusual when transponder and radio contact was lost with Flight 11. But not only was contact lost with the flight, it also deviated from its flight path. In addition, two airline attendants had separately called American Airlines reporting a hijacking. No doubt the flight controllers on nine eleven were so inept a Federal Aviation Administration manager, Kevin Delaney, was obliged to destroy a tape containing their accounts. “Evidence in [a] report and from the air traffic controllers union suggests that the decisions to make the recording + later to destroy it were meant to conform to traditional protocols following a plane crash,” the Washington Post reported on 07.May 2004 . “The actions also were aimed at protecting controllers who were under excessive stress and emotion, according to union officials representing the controllers.” In other words, destroying evidence is standard government procedure, especially for screw-up flight control employees. I bet this embarrassing oafishness is a direct result of Reagan firing all the flight controllers in order to break their union back in the 00.000.1980 s. Half way through Cockburn’s article, we are provided with a glimmer of the source of his irritation with the “conspiracy nuts” and their “high priest,” David Ray Griffin. “My in-box overflows each day with fresh ‘proofs’ of how the towers were demolished. I meet people who start quietly, asking me what I think about 9/11. What they are actually trying to find out is whether I’m part of the coven. I imagine it is like being a normal Stoic in the second century AD going for a stroll in the forum + meeting some fellow asking, with seeming casualness, whether it’s possible to feed 5,000 people on five loaves of bread + a couple of fish.” Cockburn is indeed a witty and talented scribe. However, when he attempts to explain away the demolition of the towers, he reveals himself as a flat-worlder, ignorant of the very laws of physics. As you may guess, the towers went down, pulverized into fine dust, due to government and corporate inefficacy. “The demolition scenario is classic who-moved-the-stonery. The towers didn’t fall because they were badly built as a consequence of corruption, incompetence, regulatory evasions by the Port Authority and because they were struck by huge planes loaded with jet fuel. No, they collapsed because Dick Cheney’s agents methodically planted demolition charges in the preceding days. It was a conspiracy of thousands, all of whom—party to mass murder—have held their tongues ever since.” Never mind that Hyman Brown, a University of Colorado civil engineering professor and the World Trade Center’s construction manager, has stated that WTC 1 and 2 were designed to survive an impact and fires from a collision by the largest commercial aircraft at the time, a Boeing 707-340. “The building was designed to have a fully loaded 707 crash into it. That was the largest plane at the time. I believe that the building probably could sustain multiple impacts of jetliners because this structure is like the mosquito netting on your screen door—this intense grid—and the jet plane is just a pencil puncturing that screen netting. It really does nothing to the screen netting,” explained the late Frank A. Demartini, on-site construction manager for the WTC, who perished during the attacks. No steel-frame building, before or after the WTC buildings, has ever collapsed due to fire. According to Cockburn, people inside the buildings did not hear explosions. In fact, Edmund McNally phoned his wife Liz twice following the impact of the planes and told her “I can hear explosions below me,” according to a report published in the New York Times. Tom Elliott, survivor of WTC 2, told the Christian Science Monitor “those around him thought an explosion had come from below,” an “incredible noise—he calls it an ‘exploding sound’—shook the building + a tornado of hot air and smoke and ceiling tiles and bits of drywall came flying up the stairwell.” Lou Cacchioli, Christopher Fenyo, William Reynolds + other firefighters, including Lieutenant Fireman and former Auxiliary Police Officer, Paul Isaac Jr., reported explosions. If Cockburn is still incredulous, he needs to take a listen to radio transmissions of North Brunswick Volunteer Fire/Ladder Company #3, chockfull of firefighters reporting secondary explosions. It’s a tough job being a gatekeeper with so much damning evidence floating around. Back in the day, I wrote on an irregular basis for Cockburn’s Counterpunch. However, I decided to stop doing this after Cockburn more or less called me a conspiracy nut. On October 3, 2002, Counterpunch posted my Amiri Baraka’s Somebody Blew Up America: Poetry as Treason? “As for Baraka’s assertion that both the US and Israeli government had prior knowledge of the September 11 attacks, there is clear, ample + documented evidence they most certainly did,” I wrote + then listed the Odigo warning, the 4,744 put options on United Airlines stock, the warnings of imminent attack issued by German, Jordanian + Russian intelligence. For posting this article, subsequently published in The Politics of Anti-Semitism anthology, Cockburn apparently received a bit of grief from his gatekeeper pals. “The reasons for the intense denial about the 9/11/01 attack inside the Left establishment appear to go much deeper than the fact that many of its institutions are funded by endowments like those of the Ford Foundation. The official myth appeals to political philosophies that condemn U.S. imperialism by providing the supreme example of ‘blowback’—the proverbial chickens coming home to roost. Researcher August West speaks to this and other psychological underpinnings of the denial,” notes the 9-11 Review website. West writes: Beneath unconscious motivations also lie some conscious agendas. Those on the Left who have embraced “critical support” for a “limited response” war will no doubt not wish to have their political bankruptcy exposed. But even most of those who oppose the War have nevertheless accepted the notion that the U.S. was attacked by a vicious enemy. For some, this represents an opportunity to promote their moralistic approach: let us respond in an appropriate, moral and non-military manner. Others, such as Chomsky, Michael Albert, Howard Zinn and Alex Cockburn, simply trot out the “blowback” explanation: this horrible attack happened because America has done bad things, has not listened to “us” (wag, wag the finger) + better start changing its policies (as if an empire can be run in a nice way!). Yet others who disagree with war boosters like Katrina van den Heuvel of The Nation nevertheless buy their thesis that the war promotes increasing state powers (e.g., making airport baggage inspectors federal employees) + this amounts to a move towards “socialism”. If the events of 9/11 were not what they seemed to be, this takes away the chance to promote these political programs, perhaps to even advance certain careers. Indeed, the careerist gatekeepers deny the physical nature of the universe itself—kerosene cannot melt steel, buildings do not collapse at free fall, as Isaac Newton would tell us, if he was around to witness the destruction of the WTC. Of course, all of this runs smack into the immovable brick wall of the “progressive” ideology with its blue sky insistence nine eleven was in fact a noble blow struck by oppressed Arabs conniving in Afghan caves, never mind their leader was a former CIA asset hailing from a rich Saudi family with ties to the monarchy and the Bush crime family, as amply documented. -

[*] The only problem is, there is and should be no such thing. If you are unlawful to the nation's laws you are a criminal and are subject to criminal law. If you are fighting the nation, then you are a prisoner of war. Both categories have legal protections. BushCo created a new category precisely because they wanted to violate those protections - If you are a prisoner of war you can only be asked name, rank + serial number. If you are a prisoner you have a right to a lawyer and a speedy trial. BushCo wanted and still wants unlimited detention, questioning and denial of legal access. They were smacked down by the courts and they should be again.

Compare this to the 9/11 incident: The Reichstag fire
On February 27, Hitler was enjoying supper at the Goebbels home when the telephone rang with an emergency message: “The Reichstag is on fire!” Hitler and Goebbels rushed to the fire, where they encountered Hermann Goering, who would later become Hitler’s air minister. Goering was shouting at the top of his lungs, "This is the beginning of the Communist revolution! We must not wait a minute. We will show no mercy. Every Communist official must be shot, where he is found. Every Communist deputy must this very day be strung up."
The day after the fire, the Prussian government announced that it had found communist publications stating Government buildings, museums, mansions and essential plants were to be burned down... Why would Hitler and his associates turn a blind eye to an impending terrorist attack on their national congressional building or actually assist with such a horrific deed? Because they knew what government officials have known throughout history — that during extreme national emergencies, people are most scared and thus much more willing to surrender their liberties in return for “security.” And that’s exactly what happened during the Reichstag terrorist crisis. And, compare this to the Patriot Act: The day after the fire, Hitler persuaded President Hindenburg to issue a decree entitled, “For the Protection of the People and the State.” Justified as a “defensive measure against Communist acts of violence endangering the state,” the decree suspended the constitutional guarantees pertaining to civil liberties:
Restrictions on personal liberty, on the right of free expression of opinion, including freedom of the press; on the rights of assembly and association; and violations of the privacy of postal, telegraphic and telephonic communications; and warrants for house searches, orders for confiscations as well as restrictions on property, are also permissible beyond the legal limits otherwise prescribed. Two weeks after the Reichstag fire, Hitler requested the Reichstag to temporarily delegate its powers to him so that he could adequately deal with the crisis. Denouncing opponents to his request, Hitler shouted, “Germany will be free, but not through you!” When the vote was taken, the result was 441 for and 84 against, giving Hitler the two-thirds majority he needed to suspend the German constitution. On March 23, 1933, what has gone down in German history as the “Enabling Act” made Hitler dictator of Germany, freed of all legislative and constitutional constraints. Or this, the Nazi model for the Neocons' system of capturing their enemies: The Nazis also implemented a legal concept called Schutzhaft or “protective custody” which enabled them to arrest and incarcerate people without charging them with a crime. And finally, Oddly enough, even though his dictatorship very quickly became complete, Hitler returned to the Reichstag every four years to renew the “temporary” delegation of emergency powers that it had given him to deal with the Reichstag-arson crisis. Needless to say, the Reichstag rubber-stamped each of his requests.
For their part, the German people quickly accepted the new order of things... The overwhelming majority of Germans did not seem to mind that their personal freedom had been taken away, that so much of culture had been destroyed and replaced with a mindless barbarism, or that their life and work had become regimented to a degree never before experienced even by a people accustomed for generations to a great deal of regimentation... The Nazi terror in the early years affected the lives of relatively few Germans and a newly arrived observer was somewhat surprised to see that the people of this country did not seem to feel that they were being cowed ... On the contrary, they supported it with genuine enthusiasm. Somehow it imbued them with a new hope and a new confidence and an astonishing faith in the future of their country. The only thing worse than Nazis, is Nazis who have learned from their history how to succeed.

09.Sep.2006 The Next Terri Schiavo Case - John Podesta - The announcement in the journal Science that a comatose woman’s brain showed consistent activity while being scanned following verbal cues, sets the stage for the next Terri Schiavo case. When being told to imagine she was playing tennis, for example, the same parts of her brain were activatived that would be activated in a healthy person thinking about playing tennis. Conservatives will likely jump on this case to undermine the rights of patients to decide in advance what medical interventions they don’t want if they are unable to speak for themselves. But that would be putting politics above science, as the facts show: – Scientists warn that their findings should not be generalized. For several years, neuroscientists have been working on the idea that there are “minimally conscious states” in which there may be awareness though the person appears not to have any contact with the environment. Many of these same scientists have also cautioned that their findings, including the results just published, should not be generalized to many other cases and especially not to a case like that of Ms. Schiavo. – The case described in Science does not resemble cases such as Schiavo. While the woman in the recent study had only been unconscious for a few months, the patients in all the classic legal cases — Karen Ann Quinlan, Nancy Cruzan and Terri Schiavo — were in vegetative states for years. Scans of Terri Schiavo’s brain showed that much of it had disappeared, lacking the physical basis of any awareness at all. Many more studies need to be done to correlate these apparent reactions with factors like length of time of the unconscious state and the physicial condition of the patient’s brain. Policymakers and the public need to rely on the neuroscientists themselves — not right-wing advocates — for guidance on these cases. – Jonathan Moreno

Cunningham is the son of Loren and Darlene Cunningham, the founders of Youth With a Mission (YWAM), a Christian evangelical group that actively tries to get “youth into short-term mission work and to give them opportunities to reach out in Jesus’ name.” YWAM Sponsored the Film Institute To Change Hollywood. YWAM created an “auxillary” group called the Film Institute, which was explicitly aimed at achieving a “Godly transformation + revolution TO + THROUGH the Film + Television industry.” Film Institute Began the “Untitled History Project.” The Film Institute’s first project was simply referred to as the “Untitled History Project” (UHP). 00.Jul.2005 Fox News reported that filming had begun on an ABC miniseries about 9/11 that ABC officials and producers were referring to it as the “Untitled History Project.” A production company entitled “UHP Productions,” which was co-founded with Disney began filming Path to 9/11 in late 2005. UHP Became Path to 9/11. UHP Productions has only produced one movie. As part of TFI's long-term strategy, Cunningham helped place interns from Youth With A Mission's in film industry jobs "so that they can begin to impact and transform Hollywood from the inside out," according to a YWAM report. Last June, Cunningham's TFI announced it was producing its first film, mysteriously titled "Untitled History Project." "TFI's first project is a doozy," a newsletter to YWAM members read. "Simply being referred to as: The Untitled History Project, it is already being called the television event of the decade and not one second has been put to film yet. Talk about great expectations!" These folks are being told that tape backups with their information were mistakenly thrown away back in July. There's apparently no need to worry about possibility of compromised personal information; the company believes the tapes were destroyed at a landfill. Just the same, "To prevent similar incidents, Chase said it is strengthening its security procedures and is conducting a review of all data storage and protection processes. Chase began notifying the affected customers about the incident yesterday and said the process is expected to take two to three weeks. The company is offering one year of free credit monitoring to people whose Social Security numbers were on the tapes."

Nope, according to their advertising campaign, "The Path to 9/11" is "Based on the 9/11 Commission Report" and features "The years that led up to it. Everything that might have prevented it."
ABC knows exactly what they're doing + their reassurances over the past couple of days mean nothing. They know that the movie is propaganda created by an agenda-driven organization, they know it contains blatant lies + they're going ahead full steam with their plan to use the anniversary of the deaths of 3,000 people to broadcast their smear campaign over the public airwaves.

This Path to 9/11 story has exploded like a nova.
And our guy Joe was right there on the crest of the shockwave. His very good question of just who is funding this propaganda piece been picked up by several others, including DU, Justin Rood, DailyKos + - yes, folks - Howard Dean, who is referring to the show as "slander."
Max Blumenthal has also written an incisive piece on the uber conservative backing of this project that David Horowitz (right-wing propaganda machine -> https://cannonfire.blogspot.com/2007/12/war-and-sex-princeton-fraud-and.html ) himself signed onto a year ago. Blumenthal also gives some history of the questionable and secretive development of the show, which brings up a curious point, that the project itself was hidden from the public until the last minute, kept from liberals when it did go public + now incriminating newsletters + memos have been removed from websites. Whatever do these people have to hide??
To get a good bead on just how rapidly and hugely this story erupted, check out wikipedia + this lengthy entry on Sourcewatch, replete with reviews as well as listings and description of factual errors in the film.
An intriguing footnote to this whole story is the fact that ABC has scheduled simultaneous airings throughout the British Empire. The various promotions have emphasized that the show is based on the 9/11 Commission Report + on fact. One must wonder just how well this squares with ABC's insistence that (a) the film is fiction + (b) the film is still being edited + (c) how a jury might consider that as evidence in a libel lawsuit.
In any case, Blumenthal and Dean and Justin Rood all acknowledge that the story was uncovered by several bloggers, DU and DailyKos and Digby and "elsewhere." Alas, that last not even a faint reference to yours truly, except perhaps by the one or two degrees of separation from Joe.Permalink

The majority of folks appear to not trust this regime anymore + they're as likely to laugh at anyone's attempt to rewrite history as swallow it. I'm getting the image of Rove frantically paddling his way into quicksand, deeper and deeper and deeper....

Is a "spooky" CULT behind "The Path to 9/11"? Someone funneled $40 million (that's the figure currently being mentioned) to Disney in order to broadcast a lying mockudrama on the ABC network -- sans commercials or any known sponsor. Who?
The impetus -- and perhaps the cash -- seems to have come from a bizarre Christian cult called Youth With a Mission (YWAM), founded in the 1960 by Loren Cunningham, father to David Cunningham, the film's director. A fine researcher over at Democratic Underground found a page linked to YWAM which inlcuded a very revealing paragraph:
Starting in July, along with our 'normal' discipleship efforts in YWAM, we will officially join The Film Institute - a new auxiliary branch of Youth With A Mission focused on tranforming film and television from the inside out. TFI's first project is a doozy: simply being referred to as: The Untitled History Project, it is already being called the television event of the decade and not one second has been put to film yet. Talk about great expectations! The miniseries was called Untitled History Project during production; the production company was called UHP Productions. Tellingly, the web site containing this information went missing the moment "outsiders" discovered it.
YWAM has many of the attributes of a dangerous mind control cult. Not only that: Preliminary web research indicates that YWAM has long had both far-right political ambitions and "spooky" links.

Nowrasteh told a right-wing radio station that the scene was “improvised.” From the New York Times: Mr. Berger’s character is also seen abruptly hanging up during a conversation with a CIA officer at a critical moment of a military operation. In an interview yesterday with KRLA-AM in Los Angeles, Cyrus Nowrasteh, the mini-series’ screenwriter and one of its producers, said that moment had been improvised. “ Sandy Berger did not slam down the phone,” Mr. Nowrasteh said. “That is not in the report. That was not scripted. But you know when you’re making a movie, a lot of things happen on set that are unscripted. Accidents occur, spontaneous reactions of actors performing a role take place. They cited a significant decrease in the number of bodies the city morgue received as evidence the operation was working. The media picked up on it: Last month, the Baghdad morgue received more than 1,800 bodies, a record high. This month, the morgue is on track to receive less than a quarter of that. … U.S. Army Maj. Gen. James D. Thurman, commander of military forces in Baghdad, attributed the capital’s declining violence to a sweep involving 8,000 U.S. soldiers and 3,000 Iraqi troops aimed at stopping sectarian violence. It looks like they spoke too soon. According to the ABC News blog, the Baghdad morgue today revised its figures upward a whopping 300 percent: It turns out the official toll of violent deaths in August was just revised upwards to 1535 from 550, tripling the total. Now, we’re depressingly used to hearing about deaths here, so much so that the numbers can be numbing. But this means that a much-publicized drop-off in violence in August - heralded by both the Iraqi government and the US military as a sign that a new security effort in Baghdad was working - apparently didn’t exist. […] Violent deaths now appear roughly in line with the earlier trend: 1855 in July and 1595 in June. President Bush said “the initial results” of the Baghdad opertation were “encouraging.” The revised results paint a different picture.

For example, an ABC insider sent this missive to right-wing blogger Hugh Hewitt about potential edits to the film: The Disney execs met all through the weekend - unheard of in this business - debating what changes would be made and what concessions should be given. Here is what looks to be the conclusion: - There will be a handful of tweaks made to a few scenes.
- They are minor + nuance in most cases - a line lift here, a tweak to the edit there.
- There are 900 screeners out there. When this airs this weekend, there will be a number of people who will spend their free evenings looking for these changes and will be hard pressed to identify them. They are that minor.
- The average viewer would not be able to tell the difference between the two versions.
- The message of the Clinton Admin failures remains fully intact. Read the full email to Hewitt here. Right now, former Gov. Tom Kean (R-NJ) — a paid senior advisor to this film — is digging in and defending ABC. If the network is making edits to the film to correct errors, they should tell everyone, not just right-wing bloggers. The fact that ABC continues to cater to Rush Limbaugh and conservative bloggers, while refusing to show even the most basic courtesy to a former President of the USA, says a lot about what this “docudrama” is really about.

Full transcript: DODD: When the tally is taken on how effective Mr. Bolton has been at the UN, in my view he gets a failing grade overall. Human Rights Council, critical issues to strengthen the USA, our ambassador failed to get the kind of results that are critically important. But Mr. President there’s more. On the basis of those issues, I would urge my colleagues to vote against Mr. Bolton. But I’m going to go a step further, Mr. President, because I believe that other actions taken by Mr. Bolton are so outrageous that they show that Mr. Bolton does not even deserve a vote, in my view. There’s Mr. Bolton’s well documented attempts to manipulate intelligence to suit his world view and to seek the removal of at least two intelligence analysts who wouldn’t play ball. When these analysts refused to support intelligence conclusions not supported by available intelligence, Mr. Bolton mounted a concerted effort to have them fired. The fact that they weren’t removed doesn’t excuse his actions. Now, Mr. President, I don’t mind a heated debate. I don’t mind people having serious disagreements with conclusions of people. But when you attempt to fire lower-level employees who are responsible for gathering intelligence for the USA because you don’t like the results, that is dangerous business indeed. His behavior endangered our national security because it goes to the very heart of what we depend on to protect that security — unbiased and professional intelligence collection and analysis. Mr. Bolton stepped way over the line and committed an offense so grievous in my view that it warrants that this Senate deny him an up or down vote on the nomination. In concluding, Mr. President, I would return to a point that I made earlier, namely that Mr. Bolton has largely burned his bridges with his colleagues in New York and isn’t likely to be an effective diplomat when diplomacy is increasingly becoming the coin of the realm in protecting and advancing US interests at this very unstable moment in history. Fifty nine former US ambassadors and diplomats who have served in five administrations agree — yesterday they sent a letter to the Foreign Relations Committee in opposition to the nomination. They recognized as I do that at this critical moment in our nation’s future, the President should put the nation’s interest first and nominate an individual with strong diplomatic skills who believes in diplomacy, rather than placating his conservative base by continuing to push for confirmation of an unsuitable nominee. I believe that it is time for the Senate to send that message loudly and clearly to the President by rejecting efforts to ramrod this nomination through in the closing days of the session. I urge my colleagues to join me in strongly opposing this nomination.

The reason this matters so much + why Democrats are so apoplectic at the way ABC has handled this material, is that popular culture has a way of inculcating certain concepts into people's minds, especially young minds, far more effectively than talking head programs or earnest debates among political bloggers and columnists. This is the kind of thing that could taint the debate for generations if it takes hold. On the September 5 edition of CNN's The Situation Room , Henry said, "President Bush today ... taking the extraordinary step of quoting [Osama] bin Laden's own words in letters to followers, as well as what he called grisly Al Qaeda manuals, to dramatize just how potent the terror group is right now ... [which] may help shake Americans out of any complacency they may feel almost five years after 9-11." And in a September 5 AP article, Hartson wrote, "President Bush used terrorists' own words Tuesday to battle complacency among Americans about the threat of future attack, defending his record as the fall campaign season kicks into high gear." Neither Henry nor Hartson cited any support for their suggestions of American complacency. We will not retreat + we will not withdraw from the fight until this threat to civilization has been removed.
