26.Jan.2007 New Ice Age Theory - samzenpus 149+ - amigoro writes

"Most believe that the ice ages are the result of subtle changes in Earth's orbit, known as the Milankovitch cycles.

According to one scientist, that is not the case. Robert Ehrlich of George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, has developed a model which hypothesizes a dimmer switch inside the sun that causes its brightness to rise + fall on timescales of around 100,000 or 41,000 years, exactly the same period as between ice ages on Earth.

The main problem with Milankovitch cycles is that they can't explain how the ice ages go from 100,000 year cycle to 41,000 year cycle.

The cycles predicted by Ehlrich's model line up with the observations."

24.Jan.2007 politics - Lame Duck Soup
Bush's tepid State of the Union speech. - By John Dickerson
It's hard to treat the State of the Union speech
seriously in any year. But this year, it's practically impossible.

The president's approval ratings are at record lows. Members of his party are revolting against his Iraq troop increase.

Democrats control Congress + the 2008 presidential race has already started, hastening Bush's lame-duck status.

And Tuesday he got a kick in the pants from the opening of the Scooter Libby trial. George Bush has to work fast to save his presidency + yet he did nothing in his speech to change the political dynamic.

He started strong by lauding Nancy Pelosi as the first woman speaker. To not have done so would have been rude. But he iced the cake by speaking of her father.

This was reminiscent of

00.000.1987 -in-Ronald Reagan embraced the losses his party suffered in the previous midterm election by congratulating new Democratic Speaker Jim Wright (who sat in Pelosi's box tonight) + paid homage to Democratic hero Sam Rayburn.

Bush also said a special word to ailing members of Congress, including Democratic Sen. Tim Johnson.

He ended his annual speech well, too, with moving tributes to civilian heroes in the gallery. (I'm not including the Baby Einstein lady.)

The president knows the power of a good gesture in a speech that is largely useful only for gestures.

Fox’s Gibson: Reporter Who Debunked Obama Smear Probably Went To The Same Madrassa - Nico -

Last week, Fox News highlighted a right-wing report alleging that Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) attended an Islamic “madrassa” school as a 6-year-old child. In a memo released today, Obama’s office specifically called out Fox News host John Gibson for discussing the story “without any attempt to independently confirm the charges.”

On his radio show this week, Gibson refused to back down. He claimed the reporter who debunked the false report “probably went to the very madrassa” as Obama.

Gibson implied that ’s report had covered up religious extremism at the school:

GIBSON [W]hat did they see when they went to the madrassa where Barack Obama went to school?

GIBSON: Playing volleyball, right. They didn’t see them in any terrorist training camps?

Cheney Dismisses Questions Of His Credibility As ‘Hogwash’ - Faiz  -

In an interview aired on ’s The Situation Room, Vice President Dick Cheney dismissed as “hogwash” the suggestion that blunders may have hurt his credibility on Iraq.

Wolf Blitzer told Cheney that conservatives in Congress “are now seriously questioning your credibility, because of the blunders and the failures.”

Cheney responded: “Wolf, Wolf, I simply don’t accept the premise of your question. I just think it’s hogwash.” Watch it:

Mr. Vice President, here are some examples of real hogwash:

CHENEY: “If you look at what’s transpired in Iraq, Chris, we’ve made enormous progress.” [1/14/07]

CHENEY: Rumsfeld “is the finest secretary of defense this nation has ever had.” [12/15/06]

CHENEY: “I don’t think anybody anticipated the level of violence that we have encountered.” [6/19/06]

Also in the interview, Cheney claimed the escalation plan “will work,” adding that the administration will “move forward” with the troops buildup in Iraq regardless of what Congress says. Cheney cited an argument made by Sen. Joseph Lieberman (I-CT) claiming opponents of escalation are not supporting the troops. Full transcript:

BLITZER: Here’s what Jim Webb, senator from Virginia said in the Democratic response last night — he said, “The president took us into this war recklessly. We are now, as a nation, held hostage to the predictable and predicted disarray that has followed.”

And it’s not just Jim Webb; it’s some of your good Republican friends in the Senate and the House are now seriously questioning your credibility, because of the blunders and the failures. Gordon Smith…

CHENEY: Wolf, Wolf, I simply don’t accept the premise of your question. I just think it’s hogwash. […]

Now, the critics have not suggested a policy. They haven’t put anything in place. All they want to do, all they’ve recommended is to redeploy or to withdraw our forces. The fact is we can complete the task in Iraq. And we’re going to do it. We’ve got Petraeus, General Petraeus taking over. It is a good strategy. It will work. But we have to have the stomach to finish the task.

BLITZER: What if the Senate passes a resolution saying, This is not good idea? Will that stop you?

CHENEY: It won’t stop us. And it would be, I think, detrimental from the standpoint of the troops.

As General Petraeus said yesterday — he was asked by Joe Lieberman, among others, in his testimony about this notion that somehow the Senate could vote overwhelmingly for him, send him on his new assignment + then pass a resolution at the same time, say, “But we don’t agree with the mission you’ve been given.”

BLITZER: You’re moving forward, no matter what the Congress does.

CHENEY: We are moving forward. We are moving forward.

25.Jan.2007 Bush Trusts Patients To Make Their Own Health Care Decisions, Except When They’re Women - Guest  -

In last night’s State of the Union address, President Bush acknowledged that patients and their doctors should have full control of their health care decisions:

[I]n all we do, we must remember that the best healthcare decisions are made not by government and insurance companies, but by patients and their doctors .

Despite his rhetoric, Bush signed into law the “Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act of 2003,” which is the first federal statute to tell doctors what specific methods they may + may not use when providing legal medical services — regardless of the patient’s condition or the doctor’s opinion about the safest course of treatment.

At the signing ceremony in Nov. 2003, Bush justified his support of the ban by citing the opinion of Congress: “As Congress has found, the practice is widely regarded within the medical profession as unnecessary, not only cruel to the child, but harmful to the mother + a violation of medical ethics.”

But the nation’s leading group of professionals providing health care for women, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, disagrees. It opposes the law because the banned procedure is often the best option for women:

The intact variant of D&E offers significant safety advantages over the non-intact method, including a reduced risk of catastrophic hemorrhage and life-threatening infection. These safety advantages are widely recognized by experts in the field of women’s health, authoritative medical texts, peer-reviewed studies + the nation’s leading medical schools .

In other words, women sometimes need the procedure in order to protect their health and future fertility.

Bush has had the Department of Justice defend the law all the way to the Supreme Court. A decision is expected from the Court by this June.

Evidently, the President believes that patients and doctors make the best health care decisions — except for when the patient is a woman. Jessica Arons
25.Jan.2007 Hagel Chides Colleagues On Iraq Vote: ‘If You Wanted A Safe Job, Go Sell Shoes’ - Think Progress  -

This morning in his opening statements before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-NE) said, “The American people are far ahead of us” on what to do next in Iraq. “They’re not conflicted with the nuances of life. They understand what’s going on.” According to a recent Gallup Poll, 56 % of Americans want a withdrawal from Iraq within a year.

Hagel chided his fellow colleagues for being too concerned about the politics of their Iraq positioning. “If you wanted a safe job, go sell shoes,” he said. Hagel concluded that all 100 Senators have a responsibility to take a position on escalation. “We owe it to those men and women that we continue to send in that grinder.” Watch it: Digg It! Transcript:

This is a very real, responsible addressing of the most divisive issue in this country since Vietnam. Yes, sure, it’s tough. Absolutely. And I think all 100 senators ought to be on the line on this.

What do you believe? What are you willing to support? What do you think? Why were you elected?

If you wanted a safe job, go sell shoes. This is a tough business. But is it any tougher, us having to take a tough vote, express ourselves + have the courage to step up on what we’re asking our young men + women to do?

I don’t think so.

When I hear, on both sides of this argument, impugning motives and patriotism to our country, not only is it offensive and disgusting but it debases the whole system of our country and who we are.

My goodness. Can’t we debate the most critical issue of our time, out front, in front of the American people?

The expect it. Are we so weak, we can’t do that?

I don’t think so. Like always, the American people are far ahead of us sitting here, far ahead of us. Because we’re concerned about politics. We’re concerned about our position. We’re concerned about our next election.

So we tinker. So we figure out wordsmithing. So should we oppose the president or just not support the president?

Different languages: disagree with the president ; that’s not as harsh as oppose the president.

But you know what, the American people have got this sorted out.

They always have.

They’re not conflicted with the nuances of life.

They understand what’s going on.

What we are proposing here — and everyone will have an opportunity to voice their opinion, present their amendments, make their case, as they should.

It’s the strength of who we are, the fabric of our society.

But we owe it to those men and women that we continue to send in that grinder.

Audience Snubs Bush Attack Line, Cheney Gives Standing Ovation - Nico  -

During last night’s State of the Union address, President Bush again “forcefully defended his unpopular decision to send more U.S. troops to Iraq.”

At one point, President Bush claimed that redeploying from Iraq would produce a “nightmare scenario” in the Middle East + that to “allow that to happen would be to ignore the lessons of September the 11th and invite tragedy.”

While House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and much of the rest of the audience stayed seated, Vice President Dick Cheney gave the rhetoric a standing ovation.

Watch it: A photo close-up: Full transcript:

For America, this is a nightmare scenario. For the enemy, this is the objective. Chaos is the greatest ally — their greatest ally in this struggle. And out of chaos in Iraq would emerge an emboldened enemy with new safe havens, new recruits, new resources + an even greater determination to harm America. To allow this to happen would be to ignore the lessons of September the 11th and invite tragedy. Ladies and gentlemen, nothing is more important at this moment in our history than for America to succeed in the Middle East, to succeed in Iraq and to spare the American people from this danger.

Bush’s State Of The Union Is Over, Let’s Focus On Developing Our Progressive Message - Guest  -

(Our guest blogger, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), is a member of the Finance Committee and author of Positively American: Winning Back the Middle-Class Majority One Family at a Time)

In his speech last night we heard the President talking the bipartisan talk, but the substance of the speech shows he has yet to walk the bipartisan walk. Just about every one of the President’s proposals falls within the narrow ideological contours that the voters rejected 00.000.2006. He has learned very little.

There’s certainly a lot to criticize in the President’s speech and in his record, but I don’t think that’s the only thing we should be focusing on. We must get beyond the President’s disingenuousness and failures. 00.000.2008, we must have our own sharp, clear and progressive plan if we are going to prevail.

That’s what I hope my new book Positively American: Winning Back the Middle-Class Majority One Family at a Time will do. The first part of the book describes some war stories — my improbable Senate election 00.000.1998 and the next to impossible take-over of the Senate this past fall — and includes colorful anecdotes to describe where, as a country, our political process stands. A lot of it boils down a to large group of American voters who are too often ignored by too many of us: the middle-class.

President Bush won the 2004 election with eight words that spoke to this group: War in Iraq. Cut Taxes. No gay marriage. Each was connected to a larger, deeply held value that the conservative movement had been developing — and advocating — for a generation.

In the lead-up to 2008, progressives must develop our own eight words.

That’s the point of the second part of the book — “The 50% Solution” — which presents eleven concrete goals, to be achieved within ten years, that are a promise to the middle class. For each goal, there are novel and detailed solutions and a discussion of why I am convinced they are critical to our country’s future. You can look at the 50% Solution HERE.

While the eleven goals are by no means a complete platform, I hope they serve as the beginning of a new discussion. Ambitious but practical ideas like these, designed to help regular people, have the power to push the conservative agenda — which wants to take us back to the 1930’s or even the 1880’s — away from the center of discourse. They can replace it with progressive ideals, built around the knowledge that in a world unsettlingly changed by technology, people are more and more looking to the government for security, stability and support.

As we think about these ideas and respond to the President’s speech, let’s try to move past our frustration at the disingenuousness and ineffectiveness of what he has presented. Instead, let’s focus on furthering our own positive agenda and platform; because that, more than anything, is what our country so desperately needs. Chuck Schumer

25.Jan.2007 Hagel: White House Originally Wanted 2002 Iraq War Resolution to Cover Entire Middle East - Payson  -

The Bush administration has taken a series of steps in recent weeks that appear to be setting the stage for a military confrontation with Iran. Congressional leaders have been raising red flags. “I’d like to be clear,” Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) said last week. “The president does not have the authority to launch military action in Iran without first seeking congressional authorization.” Recent comments made by Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-NE) explain why Congress’s resistance is so vital.

In an interview in GQ Magazine, Hagel reveals that the Bush administration tried to get Congress to approve military action anywhere in the Middle East — not just in Iraq — in the fall of 2002. At the time, Hagel says, the Bush administration presented Congress with a resolution that would have authorized the use of force anywhere in the region:

HAGEL: [F]inally, begrudgingly, [the White House] sent over a resolution for Congress to approve. Well, it was astounding. It said they could go anywhere in the region.

GQ: It wasn’t specific to Iraq?

HAGEL: Oh no. It said the whole region! They could go into Greece or anywhere. Is central Asia in the region? I suppose! Sure as hell it was clear they meant the whole Middle East. It was anything. It was literally anything. No boundaries. No restrictions.

GQ: They expected Congress to let them start a war anywhere in the Middle East?

HAGEL: Yes. Yes. Wide open. We had to rewrite it. Joe Biden, Dick Lugar + I stripped the language that the White House had set up and put our language in it.

Asked about his vote in support of the final Iraq war resolution, Hagel told GQ, “Do I regret that vote? Yes, I do regret that vote.” Digg It!

President Bush used the word Iraq 37 times in his State of the Union last night, more than any other year.

He said the word “freedom” just three times, fewer than any other year. (Compare word usage with this interactive graph.)

Bush said yesterday he has a “goal of reducing U.S. gasoline usage by 20 % in the next 10 years.” The Washington Post notes the fine print: “Administration officials said that the goal is 20 % below projected annual gasoline usage, not off today’s levels ,” meaning “that carbon dioxide emissions from transportation fuels will drop only slightly from today’s levels; other parts of the economy produce the other two-thirds of greenhouse gases.”

“Democrats took the first step toward a wartime repudiation of President Bush on Wednesday, convening the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to approve nonbinding legislation saying an increase in troops in Iraq is ‘not in the national interest.’” Senators are working to combine two bipartisan anti-escalation measures to ensure maximum support.

The House yesterday joined the Senate and voted to strip pensions from lawmakers “convicted of crimes such as bribery, fraud and perjury.”

“As chaos has deepened” in Iraq, the Iraqi Parliament “has been at a standstill.” “Nearly every session since November has been adjourned because as few as 65 members made it to work,” and officials fear “that members were losing confidence in the institution and in the country’s fragile democracy.”

Just two weeks after President Bush announced his escalation plan for Iraq, sectarian “ violence in Iraq’s capital has spiked in recent days, even as the first US and Iraqi government military reinforcements have deployed into the embattled city.” 100 Iraqis were reported killed or found dead and another 56 were wounded yesterday.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, “on his first overseas trip as head of the world body,” “will pressure Sudan’s president next week to speed up the peace process in Darfur, which has been delayed by months of wrangling over the makeup of a larger peacekeeping force.”

Are DMCA Abuses a Temporary or Permanent Problem? - CmdrTaco 136+ -Regular Slashdot contributor Bennett Haselton wrote in with a story about the DMCA. He starts "On January 16, a man named Guntram Graef who invoked the Digital Millennium Copyright Act to ask YouTube to remove a video of giant penises attacking his wife's avatar/character in the virtual community "Second Life", retracted the claim and stated that he now believes the video was not a copyright violation. (He had sent similar notices to BoingBoing and the Sydney Morning Herald just for posting screen shots of the video.) His statements in a C-Net interview suggest that he didn't mean to alienate the anti-censorship community and was probably angry over what he saw as a sexually explicit attack on his wife. But the event sparked renewed debate over the DMCA and what constitutes abuse of it. I sympathize with Graef and I admire him for admitting an error, but I still think the incident shows why the DMCA is a bad law." Hit that link below to read the rest of his story.
