18.Feb.2007 White House Advisers Searching for Ways to ‘Bypass Congress Altogether’ - Payson - President Bush is “struggling for relevancy in the same way many other second-term presidents have,”

Newsweek observed recently. “But Bush’s burden seems much harder than other presidents in recent memory.” 71 % of Americans see Bush as a “lame duck” president + 58 % “wish the Bush presidency were simply over.”

U.S. News reports that conservatives have seen the writing on the wall and are now advising Bush to “jump start” his final two years by pushing through as much as he can by executive fiat:

With President Bush unable to get much traction so far in moving his agenda through Congress or in improving his job-approval ratings with the public, White House advisers are casting about for ways to jump-start his final two years, including issuing executive orders to get things done without having to ask for support from the Democratic-controlled Congress.

“He should get a list of the executive orders for the last 200 years, as a guide + choose what he wants to do,” says an informal Bush adviser.

One proposal that fiscal conservatives are pushing is to halve all capital-gains taxes, as a way to encourage investment and job creation.

Some conservatives argue that even if Bush somehow regains his political footing, whatever he might work out with the Democratic majority in Congress wouldn’t be very good legislation, so he should go the executive-order route and bypass Congress altogether.

Bush has already begun to implement the strategy. Last month, Bush signed Executive Order 12866 to put political appointees — rather than experienced civil servants — in charge of regulatory agencies. The order would “give the White House much greater control over the rules and policy statements that the government develops to protect public health, safety, the environment, civil rights and privacy.” Columbia Law School professor Peter L. Strauss said the move “achieves a major increase in White House control over domestic government. … Having lost control of Congress, the president is doing what he can to increase his control of the executive branch.”
18.Feb.2007 Breaking: Senate rejects debate on anti-escalation resolution. - Amanda  -

AP reports: “The Senate gridlocked on the Iraq war in a sharply worded showdown on Saturday as Republicans foiled a Democratic attempt to rebuke President Bush over his deployment of 21,500 additional combat troops. The vote was 56-34.” That was four short of the 60 needed to advance the measure, which is identical to a nonbinding resolution that passed the House on Friday.

UPDATE: “The vote marked the second time this winter that Senate Republicans have blocked action on nonbinding measures critical of the president’s war policies.

This time, however, there were signs of restlessness within the GOP. Seven Republicans broke with their leadership, compared with only two on the previous test vote.”

UPDATE II: Full roll call vote here.
18.Feb.2007 Sen. Thomas: ‘If You Are Talking About Withdrawal, I Don’t Think Most People Favor That’ - Faiz  -

On C-Span’s Washington Journal this morning, Sen. Craig Thomas (R-WY) said that he would support Bush’s escalation strategy if it comes to a vote today in the Senate.

Thomas justified his stance by arguing, “If you are talking about withdrawal, I don’t think most people favor that.” Watch it: <

Thomas’s claim has no support. Recent polls have indicated widespread approval for withdrawal. Here’s a sampling:

USA Today: 63 % favor a timetable for withdrawal by the end of next year

Pew: 53 % favor a withdrawal from Iraq

Rasmussen: 55 % favor withdrawal within a year

Newsweek reported recently that Thomas is one of Bush’s “dwindling” supporters on Iraq. But even the stalwart conservative senator from Wyoming has privately expressed concern about the escalation strategy. When it comes to public action, however, Thomas is one of the conservatives struggling “to put country over party.” Transcript: (more…)

18.Feb.2007 Scientists Expose Weak DNA in HIV - CowboyNeal 160 -
Ace905 writes "The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases announced Thursday that they had discovered a very promising 'weak spot' in the HIV virus.

The HIV virus, a progenitor to full blown AIDS has eluded all attempts at a vaccine since it was discovered sometime in the 1970 's.

The major problem with developing a vaccine initially was isolating the virus. Conventional viruses are often defeated with existing drugs, or after being tested against new compounds.

HIV has been unique + staggering in it's ability to resist all attempts at treatment by mutating its own genetic code.

HIV is able to resist, with great effectiveness, any drug or combination drug-therapy that is used against it."

18.Feb.2007 Congress' Nuclear Liability -By Jorge Hirsch

Empire building, the consequence of self-delusion, arrogance + xenophobia, is actually economic exploitation. Why is the USA only interested in “liberating” countries swimming in natural resources such as oil?

Most modern Republicans, of course, would never believe that the most revered member of their party had his doubts about giving too much power to corporations.
Adam Smith himself voiced some wariness of "joint stock corporations," and was not (contrary to what you've been taught) always opposed to government regulation.

Smith also believed in the Labor Theory of Value, usually attributed to Marx.

17.Feb.2007 on the Jewish conspiracy to make you think the Earth moves

Turns out Georgia Representative Ben Bridges has distanced himself from the memo that bears his name (see below).

It was put out by Texas House Appropriations Chairman Warren Chisum, who apologized after receiving complaints from the ADL.
17.Feb.2007 is a Jewish Conspiracy, says Congressman A particularly prehistoric congresscritter named Ben Bridges, representative from Georgia -- Cleveland, Georgia, to be specific -- now finds himself the center of controversy because a memo under his name offers the following anti-evolutionary screed: “Indisputable evidence — long hidden but now available to everyone — demonstrates conclusively that so-called ‘secular evolution science’ is the Big-Bang 15-billion-year alternate ‘creation scenario’ of the Pharisee Religion,” the memo says. “This scenario is derived concept-for-concept from Rabbinic writings in the mystic ‘holy book’ Kabbala dating back at least two millennia.”
The memo calls on lawmakers to introduce legislation that would end the teaching of evolution in public schools because it is “a deception that is causing incalculable harm to every student and every truth-loving citizen.”
It also directs readers to a Web site, which includes model legislation that calls the Kabbala “a mystic, anti-Christ ‘holy book’ of the Pharisee Sect of Judaism.” The Web site also declares “the earth is not rotating … nor is it going around the sun.” (Emphasis added throughout.)

Conflict Resolution
By Justin Peters
Posted Saturday, Feb. 17, 2007, at 5:54 AM ET

Everybody leads with news that the House of Representatives passed a resolution yesterday slamming the administration's plan to send over 20,000 new troops to Iraq.

Although the resolution, which passed by a vote of 246-182, is non-binding, it's symbolically significant in that it is exceedingly rare for a Congress to officially criticize a wartime President's battlefield policies, as the New York Times reports. The Senate is scheduled to meet today to consider whether to debate the House resolution.

The resolution was only two sentences long, the Los Angeles Times notes, but it symbolizes the new order in Washington, and, by extension, the resistance that President Bush will face during the next two years. "Today, in a loud voice, the Congress of the USA has said to the president, 'Mr. President, we need a new direction in Iraq,'" said House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md. But, with the $93 billion requested for additional war funding soon due for a vote, it remains to be seen whether the Democratic resistance will begin and end with symbolism. 17.Feb.2007 Fake Al Qaeda - BG

Fake Al Qaeda "Ana raicha Al Qaeda" is colloquial for "I'm going to the toilet". A very common and widespread use of the word "Al-Qaeda" in different Arab countries in the public language is for the toilet bowl.

This name comes from the Arabic verb "Qa'ada" which mean "to sit", pertinently, on the "Toilet Bowl".

In most Arabs homes there are two kinds of toilets: "Al-Qaeda" also called the "Hamam Franji" or foreign toilet + "Hamam Arabi" or "Arab toilet" which is a hole in the ground.

Lest we forget it, the potty used by small children is called "Ma Qa'adia" or "Little Qaeda".

So, if you were forming a terrorist group, would you call yourself, "The Toilet"?

17.Feb.2007 Al-Qaeda cleric exposed as an MI5 double agent ONE of al-Qaeda's most dangerous figures has been revealed as a double agent working for MI5, raising criticism from European governments, which repeatedly called for his arrest.

Britain ignored warnings - which began before the September 11 attacks - from half a dozen friendly governments about Abu Qatada's links with terrorist groups + refused to arrest him.

Intelligence chiefs hid from European allies their intention to use the cleric as a key informer against Islamic militants in Britain. ...

Indignant French officials accused MI5 of helping the cleric to abscond. While he remained on the run, one intelligence chief in Paris was quoted as saying:

"British intelligence is saying they have no idea where he is, but we know where he is and, if we know, I'm quite sure they do."

Almost a year later Abu Qatada was found hiding in a flat not far from Scotland Yard. [Times]

The two British operatives, arrested by Basra police and later freed by a British military operation, were identified by the BBC as "members of the SAS elite special forces" ( They were disguised by wigs and Arab dress.

Iraqi sources reported that the Iraqi police were watching the two + when they tried to approach them they shot two policemen and tried to escape the scene.

The Iraqi police chased and captured them, to discover large amount of explosives planted in the car, which apparently was planned to be remotely detonated in the busy market of Basra.

The SAS involvement in Iraq

30.Jan.2005 was discovered on- the when an RAF Hercules plane crashed near Baghdad killing then British servicemen after dropping off fifty SAS members north of Baghdad to fight Iraqi guerillas.

17.Feb.2007 Foreign Policy's "Terrorism Index" Shines No Light In The Darkness - BG
Earlier this week, Foreign Policy released its second "Terrorism Index", a feature which purports to examine the scale, scope and nature of global terrorism, its threat to America + America's response to the threat.

But in fact it does nothing of the sort; instead it obscures the most important issues of the day + it does so at great length. If the "Terrorism Index" is intended as serious analysis, it's very weak indeed; but if it's intended as propaganda then it's brilliant. The report begins by noting that most Americans don't believe we're winning the War on Terror + almost half don't believe the government has a plan to protect the nation from terrorism: America's leaders like to say that the terrorist attacks of S... Then I rated these five presidents, in this order, as the worst: Andrew Jackson, James Buchanan, Ulysses Grant, Hoover and Richard Nixon.

17.Feb.2007 ‘Slow Bleed’ Conservatives Voted Against Billions In Equipment For U.S. Troops - Nico  -

The right-wing has begun a coordinated effort to smear Iraq war critics by describing their legislative plan as a “slow-bleed strategy.”

The phrase was first used in an article Wednesday by John Bresnahan of The Politico; within hours, the Republican National Committee issued a release falsely claiming that Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Rep. John Murtha (D-PA) “call their plan the ’slow-bleed strategy.’” In fact, as Bresnahan clarified in a subsequent article, “slow-bleed” was “not a term used by any Democrats or the anti-war groups supporting their efforts.”

Nevertheless, conservatives continue to use the phrase to attack war critics. During this week’s Iraq debate, at least five members — Deborah Pryce (R-OH), Roy Blunt (R-MO), Thaddeus McCotter (R-MI), Jeb Hensarling (R-TX) + Adam Putnam (R-FL) — used the phrase on the House floor. Watch a video compilation:

If only their rhetoric matched their voting record. In October 2003, as insurgent violence in Iraq was growing and military equipment shortages were becoming increasingly problematic, Rep. David Obey (D-WI) proposed an amendment shifting $3.6 billion to pay for better equipment and other quality-of-life measures for U.S. troops. Not one of the five voted for it. That’s a real recipe for “slow bleed.”
17.Feb.2007 Why Did Rove Request A Copy Of A Secret Iranian Proposal For Negotiations 00.000.2003? - Faiz  -

Inter Press Service reports that,

00.May 2003 -in early- Karl Rove received a copy of a secret Iranian proposal for negotiations with the USA from former Rep. Bob Ney (R-OH) — who is now serving 30 months in prison for his role in a corruption scandal.

Former Ney aide, Trita Parsi — who now works at the National Iranian-American Council — said that Ney was chosen by the Swiss Ambassador in Tehran Tim Guldimann to carry the Iranian proposal to the White House because he believed Ney to be the only Farsi-speaking member of Congress and particularly interested in Iran. According to IPS:

Parsi revealed that the document was delivered specifically to Rove, in an exclusive interview with IPS. Within two hours of the delivery of the document, according to Parsi, Ney received a phone call from Rove confirming his receipt of the document.

Parsi said the proposal was delivered to Rove the same week that the State Department received it by fax, which was

04.May 2003 -on or about- according to the cover letter accompanying it.

Contrary to the article’s report, Rove was not deputy chief of staff in May 2003. He was serving at the time as the senior political adviser in the White House, a position with no responsibility on foreign policy. The White House press office has not responded to a request for comment on why Rove received a copy of the Iranian proposal.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice — who

00.000.2003 served as National Security Adviser — and Eliot Abrams — the deputy National Security Adviser — have claimed that they do not remember receiving the Iranian proposal. Newsweek recently revealed the contents of the proposal, which were communicated through a Swiss intermediary in

00.May 2003.

Fox News host Sean Hannity has repeatedly attacked Al Gore, calling him an “alarmist” and a “hypocrite” on global warming.

Earlier this month on his website, Hannity asked his viewers to send him pictures of “Al Gore getting onto private planes”:

Today on Fox News, Hannity previewed his smear campaign which will air on Sunday night, promising to calculate the carbon used by Al Gore in his travel. Watch it:

Hannity argued, “My attitude is, if you want to lead on this issue, then you’ve really got to lead by example.” That’s exactly what Al Gore is doing.

This afternoon, ThinkProgress reached Vice President Gore’s office for response to Hannity’s attacks. Here’s what his office told us:

– Gore lives a strict carbon-neutral lifestyle both in his work and private life. That means he tries to reduce his emissions as much as possible + then purchases carbon offsets for the remaining emissions.

“International efforts to combat global warming will come too late to prevent the evacuation of Pacific islands sinking as a result of rising sea levels and severe weather, said Anote Tong, president of Kiribati.

“We can’t out-move the changes in the weather and the sea level rise,” Tong told Bloomberg News. “We have to consider leaving rather than wait.” Most of Kiribati will be uninhabitable by the middle of this century because of weather damage and rising tides.

17.Feb.2007 Young Will Not Retract Fabricated Lincoln Quote - Nico  -

During yesterday’s House debate on Iraq, Rep. This morning, Young’s spokeswoman Meredith Kenny told ThinkProgress repeatedly that Young does not plan to take any action to correct the record or clarify his House statement.

Kenny said that Young had learned of the quote from Tuesday’s Washington Times op-ed by Frank Gaffney + noted that the Times has not yet issued a correction or retraction.

Kenny said she “couldn’t confirm or deny” that Young would correct his statement even if the Times published a correction.

Kenny added that Young didn’t literally mean that those supporting the Iraq resolution should be “hanged,” merely that they should not be “undermining the morale of our military.” Digg It!

Support The Troops, Help Stop The Escalation - Guest  -

Our guest blogger is Jon Soltz, chairman of and veteran of the Iraq war.

Tuesday was Valentine’s Day, but today is the real V-Day in the House of Representatives - Vote Day.

Finally, after weeks of wrangling and days of debate, Members of the House will lay down a vote declaring whether they are for the escalation in Iraq, or for the Troops.

Most likely, the House resolution will pass easily with bipartisan support and attention will turn to the Senate, where Sen. Harry Reid is delaying the President’s Day recess to vote on it.’s veterans of Iraq will be spending the weekend in D.C. to help ensure a vote and passage. We’ve had meetings with half of the Senate + a few dozen House offices.

The vast majority of Democrats are eager to cast their vote for the resolution.

On the Republican side, while there are many that won’t support it under any circumstances, I do get the sense from many more that they are genuinely struggling with the issue — whether to put country above party.

I can tell you that the only thing that moves members more than hearing from the troops is hearing from constituents.

The Senate resolution will pass only if their phones are flooded with demands from their constituents. Please do your part and take a few seconds to make a call (800-614-2803) or write and then report back. – Jon Soltz
17.Feb.2007 FLASHBACK: Pace Contradicted Rumsfeld Over Iranian Involvement In Iraq - Nico  -

On Sunday, anonymous administration officials presented evidence purportedly showing that weapons have been smuggled into Iraq with “the approval of senior Iranian officials.” The next day, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Peter Pace seemed to contradict this claim, saying that he has not seen evidence that the Iranian government “clearly knows or is complicit” in the weapons smuggling.

As it turns out, we’ve seen this exchange before. In March 2006, Pace and then-Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld held a Pentagon press briefing, during which Rumsfeld warned reporters that Iran was “putting Iranian Quds Force-type people” into Iraq.

When a reporter asked Pace whether the Iranian forces in Iraq were “backed by the central government,” Pace responded frankly, “ I do not know. ” Rumsfeld was then asked the same question + provided a very different answer: “ Well, of course. The Revolutionary Guard doesn’t go milling around willy-nilly, one would think.” Read the transcript:

SEC. RUMSFELD: I will say this about Iran. They are currently putting people into Iraq to do things that are harmful to the future of Iraq. And we know it + it is something that they, I think, will look back on as having been an error in judgment. … They’re putting Iranian Quds Force-type people into the country. … The Quds Force. The Revolutionary Guard types. …

Q Do you believe it’s backed by the government, or are they individual elements not backed by the central government?

GEN. PACE: I do not know. …

Q Do you think this is backed by the central government in Iran? What’s your —

SEC. RUMSFELD: Well, of course. The Revolutionary Guard doesn’t go milling around willy-nilly, one would think.

One year later, the Bush administration admits there is no evidence showing that officials in Iran’s central government are directing the weapons smugglers. “I do not know whether or not the Quds force was ordered from the top echelons of government,” President Bush said Wednesday. Yet the fact that Rumsfeld nonchalantly pushed that claim demonstrates once again how the most senior Bush officials have been willing to overlook facts to pursue their ideological agenda.

Grid Computes 420 Years Worth of Data in 4 Months - Zonk 94 -

Da Massive writes with a ComputerWorld article about a grid computing approach to the malaria disease. By running the problem across 5,000 computer for a total of four months, the WISDOM project analyzed some 80,000 drug compounds every hour. The search for new drug compounds is normally a time-intensive process, but the grid approach did the work of 420 years of computation in just 16 weeks. Individuals in over 25 countries participated. " All computers ran open source grid software, gLite, which allowed them to access central grid storage elements which were installed on Linux machines located in several countries worldwide. Besides being collected and saved in storage elements, data was also analyzed separately with meaningful results stored in a relational database. The database was installed on a separate Linux machine, to allow scientists to more easily analyze and select useful compounds." Are there any other 'big picture' problems out there you think would benefit from the grid approach?
Bionic Eye Could Restore Vision - Zonk 145 -MattSparkes writes

"A new bionic eye could restore vision to the profoundly blind. A prototype was tested on six patients and 'within a few weeks all could detect light, identify objects and even perceive motion again. For one patient, this was the first time he had seen anything in half a century.' The user wears a pair of glasses that contain a miniature camera and that wirelessly transmits video to a cellphone-sized computer in the wearer's pocket. This computer processes the image information and wirelessly transmits it to a tiny electronic receiver implanted in the wearer's head."
Scientists Dubious of Quantum Computing Claims - Zonk 100 -Dollaz wrote with a link to the International Business Times, which questions the authenticity of D-Wave's Quantum computing.

We discussed the 'Sudoku playing' computer yesterday, but scientists in the field have expressed a lot of distrust of the company's findings. The machine was not available for inspection during or after the demo + even if the technology was working as intended there is some doubt that it can be scaled. The article points out that "notwithstanding lofty claims in the company's press release about creating the world's first commercial quantum computer, D-Wave Chief Executive Herb Martin emphasized that the machine is not a true quantum computer and is instead a kind of special-purpose machine that uses some quantum mechanics to solve problems." Good to see people in the field questioning 'breakthroughs'.
Congress Tackles Patent Reform - Zonk 238 -nadamsieee writes

"Wired's Luke O'Brian recently reported about Congress' latest attempt to reform the patent system. In the article O'Brian tells of how 'witnesses at Thursday's hearing painted a bleak picture of that system. Adam Jaffe, a Brandeis University professor and author of a book on the subject, described the system as 'out of whack.' Instead of 'the engine of innovation,' the patent has become 'the sand in the gears,' he said, citing widespread fears of litigation. The House Oversight Committee website has more details. How would you fix the patent system?"
Server Power Consumption Doubled Over Past 5 years - Zonk 134 -Watt's up writes

"A new study shows an alarming increase in server power consumption over the past five years. In the US, servers (including cooling equipment) consumes 1.2% of all the electricity 00.000.2005, up from 0.6% 00.000.2000. The trend is similar worldwide. 'If current trends continue, server electricity usage will jump 40 % by 2010, driven in part by the rise of cheap blade servers, which increase overall power use faster than larger ones. Virtualization and consolidation of servers will work against this trend, though + it's difficult to predict what will happen as data centers increasingly standardize on power-efficient chips." We also had a recent discussion of power consumption in consumer PCs that you might find interesting.

16.Feb.2007 The Ghawar Oil Field: How Much Is Left?
Decline of the world’s largest reserve could cripple the global economy -By David S. Elliott

Parroting their master’s slogan about “fighting over there so we don’t have to fight over here”, these students proudly proclaimed that they terrorized and killed defenseless Iraqis.

16.Feb.2007 Information Warfare, Psy-ops and the Power of Myth -By Mike Whitney
Just as 9-11 has been used to justify the enhanced powers of the “unitary” president, the evisceration of civil liberties + a permanent state of war; so too, the bombing of the Golden Mosque, has been used to create a fictional narrative of deeply ingrained sectarian animosity that has no historical precedent. Both events need to be exposed by thorough and independent investigations.

(incidentally, he used to be a magician before becoming a janitor).

FOLLOWING the events of 9/11, Rodriguez was treated as a hero.

"Every politician wanted to have their photo taken with me," he says. Among those were Hillary Clinton and President George W Bush. "The Republicans offered me funding to go to politics," he says.

"They offered me thousands of dollars of campaign money. They were trying to get the Hispanic vote and saw me as a clear candidate to do that. I was part of the whole party machinery, until I started to ask questions."

Just before the first plane struck the tower at 8.46am, he was in an office with colleagues on the building's first sub-level when he says they heard "a massive explosion".

"The floor vibrated. We were all thrown upwards, then everyone in the office started screaming. Then we heard another noise, the impact of the plane. It was two different events, separated by a fraction of time. It was a miracle I was there and not in the restaurant," he says.

With the 9/11 Truth Campaign, he insists that both towers were subject to a controlled explosion; and that, moments before the north tower was hit by a plane, he and colleagues heard an explosion underneath their office. This initial explosion was then followed by other bombs. This same version of events is peddled by Loose Change, a 90-minute internet movie made by three American men, which has been watched by an estimated 100 million viewers around the globe. The film, a blitz of statistics, photographs, eyewitness accounts and testimonies, argues that the fire in the towers was not hot enough to melt their steel frames and that they fell too quickly.

Regardless of whether you believe him, Rodriguez's voyage is an extraordinary one. Since 9/11, he has gone from being an establishment figure, taken into the bosom of the Republican party and even groomed for political office, to one who is now considered a maverick in these same quarters. Yet he remains committed to what he calls "a just and truthful cause".

"People say they don't believe in conspiracy theories + I say neither do I. But I was there that day. I was an eyewitness," he says.

16.Feb.2007 Alex Jones Watch #9: Avoiding the Issue of 9/11 with Ron Paul - BG
Blogger Thoughts: Below is a link and excerpt from a posting at What is not stated clearly here, is the fact, (which was probably evident when the post was made + is even more evident after the Alex Jones interview with Ron Paul today on Alex's show), is that Ron Paul is not even planning to bring up the subject of 9/11 and investigations when he is allowed on as an official Pres. Candidate at a debate to be held live on . Alex even avoids raising the question in an extended interview with Congressman Ron Paul. This raises the question: what's the use of standing up for 9/11 truth if you won't even address it with those who we are supposed to consider our best hope for changing our corrupt government? Alex may think Ron Paul actually has a chance to succeed as a candidate + realize that bring up 9/11 would hurt his chances. In this bloggers estimation, Ron Paul has zero chance to be considered as a serious candidate. It makes him part of the problem in that he won't tell the hard truth. -

HON. DR. RON PAUL: Well, that would be nice to have. Unfortunately, we don't have that in place. It will be a little bit better now with the Democrats now in charge of oversight. But you know, for top level policy there's not a whole lot of difference between the two policies so a real investigation isn't going to happen. But I think we have to keep pushing for it. And like you and others, we see the investigations that have been done so far as more or less cover-up and no real explanation of what went on.

Today, President Bush delivered a speech on Afghanistan at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), a conservative think tank in Washington, D.C. More than 20 AEI scholars have worked in my administration.

Below are a few examples of the people and ideas that AEI has shared — or tried to share — with the Bush White House over recent years:

– Escalation. President Bush’s escalation plan is based on a report by AEI scholar Frederick Kagan. reporter Suzanne Malveaux said of AEI’s influence on Iraq policy: “One conservative policy group that has the president’s ear and is influencing his thinking is the American Enterprise Institute.”

16.Feb.2007 FACT CHECK: Rep. Keith Ellison Never Called Cops To ‘Snuff Tancredo’s Cigar’ - Amanda  -

Yesterday, The Hill ran a story with the headline, “Rep. Ellison calls the cops to snuff Tancredo’s cigar.”

It reported that on Wednesday night, Rep. Keith Ellison’s (D-MN) office called the Capitol Hill Police to check on smoke coming from Rep. Tom Tancredo’s (R-CO) office.

At the time, Tancredo was smoking a cigar.

MSNBC’s Tucker Carlson picked up on the story and reported that Ellison “demanded that the officer march into Congressman Tancredo’s office and confront him anyway, which the officer did, sheepishly.”

Fox News said that Ellison “called the Capitol Hill police on Colorado Republican Tom Tancredo for smoking a stogy in his office next door to Ellison’s.”

These reports are all false. Ellison never called the Capitol Hill police. Rick Jauert, Ellison’s spokesman, confirmed to ThinkProgress that he was the one who made the call. He said he wasn’t sure from where the “smoke odor” was coming, so he called the House superintendent’s office, as is standard protocol. The superintendent’s office then transferred him to the police. Jauert wrote to ThinkProgress:

I informed the officer that along about each day at 5 this vile, offensive and very strong odor began to seep into our offices. I wasn’t even aware of the fact that the Congressman himself suffers from seasonal asthma. … The officer asked me if I knew where the odor was coming from; I said, I thought it seemed to becoming from the direction of the Congressman’s personal office which would mean it likely was emanating from Cong. Tancredo’s office.

Jauert notes that Ellison initially wasn’t even aware he had made the call. Later, when he told him, Ellison “went over to Tancredo’s office to explain to them that he (Ellison) has asthma.”

Tancredo told The Hill that he has no plans to stop smoking: “If he [Ellison] would have [had] the courtesy to say something I’m sure I would have been more accommodating to his wishes.” But Tancredo’s spokesman, Carlos Espinosa, confirmed with us today that “Ellison did come by after the police left to ask us to stop smoking. But when he got to our office, [the congressman] had already left.” Digg It!
16.Feb.2007 VIDEO: Reid Calls Conservatives’ Bluff, Will Delay Recess To Vote On Escalation - Nico  -

Two weeks ago, Sens. Chuck Hagel (R-NE) and Olympia Snowe (R-ME), who say they oppose escalating the war, nevertheless voted to block debate on a bipartisan resolution opposing Bush’s Iraq policy.

Facing a political backlash, those same senators now say they want a vote immediately. In a letter yesterday to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), Hagel and Snowe said they planned to block the Senate from adjourning for next week’s recess until a vote on escalation was held.

Today, Reid called their bluff. At a press conference, Reid announced that he will delay the Senate’s recess and hold a cloture vote on the Iraq resolution on Saturday. “Time is of the essence,” Reid said + we are “determined to end the silence and find a new direction.” Watch it:

The Washington Post reports, “If the Saturday vote succeeds, Reid said he may cancel the upcoming week-long recess” to move forward with a full vote on the resolution. Digg It! Transcript: (more…)

16.Feb.2007 Earth's Constant Hum Explained - CowboyNeal 54 -
MattSparkes writes "It has been known for some time that there is a constant hum that emanates from the Earth, which can be heard near 10 millihertz on a seismometer. The problem was that nobody knew what caused it. It has now been shown that it is caused by waves on the bottom of the sea + more specifically 'by the combination of two waves of the same frequency travelling in opposite directions.'"

16.Feb.2007 that Saeed Sheikh and Khalid Sheikh Mohammed (whose capture reamins one of the great lingering mysteries of the so-called war on terror) had links to American intelligence: Shortly after 9/11, in

00.Oct.2001 , U.S. + British newspapers briefly alleged that the paymaster for the 9/11 attacks was a possible agent of the Pakistani intelligence service ISI, Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh.

There was even a brief period in which it was alleged that the money had been paid at the direction of the then ISI Chief, Lieutenant-General Mahmoud Ahmad.(23)
Others have since argued that Saeed Sheikh worked for both America and Britain, since "both American and British governments have studiously avoided taking any action against Sheikh despite the fact that he is a known terrorist who has targeted U.S. and UK citizens."(24) The claim what Saeed Sheikh was recruited by MI-6 in Great Britain has been made by myself, by John Newman + by Nafeez Mosaddeq Ahmed;

recently it has been pointed to in the new book by Pervez Musharraf, the President of Pakistan.(25)
And there may have been other double agents.

Last month Robert Baer, a former CIA officer, told an Australian newspaper that ''

00.000.1996 Khalid Sheikh Mohammed [the al-Qaeda mastermind of the 9/11 plot] was in Doha [the capital of Qatar], the CIA found out about it + wanted to arrest him and people in Washington stopped them.

That has never been answered in the 9/11 commission report, why that arrest was stopped."(26) Drowning out these important facts explains why the 911 Tranny movement has received so much covert aid.
16.Feb.2007 evidence supports the proposition that Ali Mohamed was an American plant within Al Qaeda. Scott:
But what we have heard so far is a fall-back cover-up of even worse truths. Peter Lance, who first wrote the script for the National Geographic special, told about Mohamed's detention and release in Toronto. This important detail, along with others, was cut from the program. Lance withdrew from the project and complained on his website about these and other cuts, such as this one:
"Within days of 9/11 Cloonan ... interviewed Ali, whom the Feds had allowed to slip into witness protection + demanded to know the details of the plot. At that point Ali wrote it all out - including details of how he'd counseled would-be hijackers on how to smuggle box cutters on board aircraft and where to sit, to effect the airline seizures."(9) So let us sum up what we know so far about Ali Mohamed: 1. A key planner of the 9/11 plot + trainer in hijacking, was simultaneously an informant for the FBI.
2. This operative trained the members for all of the chief Islamist attacks inside the USA -- the first WTC bombing, the New York landmarks plot + finally 9/11, as well as the attacks against Americans in Somalia and Kenya.
3. And yet for four years Mohamed was allowed to move in and out of the country as an unindicted conspirator. Then, unlike his trainees, he was allowed to plea-bargain. To this day he may still not have been sentenced for any crime + may even be in witness protection.(10) Peter Lance has charged that Fitzgerald had evidence before 1998 to implicate Mohamed in the Kenya Embassy bombing, yet did nothing and let the bombing happen.(11)

In fact, back

00.000.1990 the FBI was aware that Mohamed had engaged in terrorist training on Long Island;

yet it acted to protect Mohamed from arrest, even after one of his trainees had moved beyond training to an actual assassination.(12) If, as claimed, Ali Mohammed ended up in witness protection and not at Gitmo, we have good reason to doubt that his true loyalties went to Osama.
16.Feb.2007 the second-most important "inside man" was the mysterious Ali Mohammed -- he used other names -- of whom Peter Dale Scott has written much. The title of one of Scott's pieces tells the most basic truth about this individual: 9/11's Trainer in Terrorism Was an FBI Informant.
Author Peter Lance has a new book on Mohamed, which portrays him as Al Qaeda's inside man within the U.S. intelligence establishment.

16.Feb.2007 most significant "inside man" in history was Adolf Hitler, who joined the nascent NSDAP (the Nazi Party) as an informant for German Army Intelligence.

00.000.1979, a police informant within the Klan egged on the massacre of Communist demonstrators in in Greensboro, North Carolina. (The killers were acquitted by a racist southern jury.) During the height of the anti-Vietnam War demonstrations, FBI informants within the movement routinely tried to foment violence; the "insiders" would be released by police immediately after arrest.
16.Feb.2007 Inside Man Stop me if you've heard this one before: The organizer of a Nazi rally in a black neighborhood in Florida turns out to be be a paid FBI informant.

The New York Times and Washington Post lead with President Bush's first news conference of the year, where he said Iranian operatives provided weapons to Iraqi militias to use against U.S. troops.

But Bush backed away from claims made in a military briefing on Sunday that the "highest levels" of Iran's government have been involved. The Los Angeles Times leads with the changing argument + emphasizes that the chief military spokesman in Iraq also declared that the role of Iran's top leaders can't be confirmed.

The Wall Street Journal tops its worldwide newsbox with Bush's statements on Iran, but plays down the contradictions + states that "the president said there is no doubt Iran's government is providing armor-piercing IEDs to kill U.S. soldiers."

USA Today leads with State Farm's decision that it will not issue any new home and commercial policies in Mississippi, which could lead to other insurers abandoning the state.

Officials at State Farm said their decision was partly based on the large number of lawsuits since Hurricane Katrina.

Some say the company wants local officials to fear other insurers will stop providing new policies if the cases aren't settled in their favor.

15.Feb.2007 Goode: Iraq Critics Are Helping ‘Jihadists Who Want The Crescent And Star To Wave Over The Capitol’ - Think Progress  -

During today’s House debate on Iraq, virulently anti-Muslim Rep. Virgil Goode (R-VA) said supporting the anti-escalation resolution would “aid and assist the Islamic jihadists who want the crescent and star to wave over the Capitol of the United States and over the White House of this country.” Moreover, he said, “I fear that radical Muslims who want to control the Middle East and ultimately the world would love to see ‘In God We Trust’ stricken from our money and replaced with ‘In Muhammad We Trust.’” Watch it:

15.Feb.2007 ‘Billions already wasted in Iraq, billions more could be.’ - Amanda  -

Federal auditors today told the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform that the government has wasted $10 billion on “overpriced contracts or undocumented costs.” Of that amount, more than $2.7 billion were charged by Halliburton. The Government Accountability Office warned that “the problem could worsen,” given “limited improvement so far by the Department of Defense.”
15.Feb.2007 : White House Now Blames Briefer For Going Too Far On Iran Intel - Faiz  -

Last Sunday, the Bush administration finally presented its long-delayed intelligence briefing on Iranian arms shipments into Iraq.

Prior to the presentation, a U.S. official told the New York Times that it had been delayed because they were “trying to scrub” the intelligence, adding “the last thing we want to be accused of is cherry-picking.”

While much of the information had previously been known, the highlight of the presentation — as reported by ABC World News — was that it was “the first time military officials…made the link to the highest level of Iran’s government.” But the briefing “offered no evidence” to substantiate that claim. After coming under intense scrutiny for an intelligence presentation that was approved by the highest levels of the administration, the White House has slowly backed off its claims of Iranian government involvement.

Today, reported that the White House is now blaming the anonymous intelligence briefer who presented the information.

According to ’s Ed Henry, the White House says the anonymous intelligence briefer went “a little too far” in stating the evidence. But, as Henry said, “that begs the question why the administration has taken so long to clarify those comments.” Watch it: Transcript: (more…)
15.Feb.2007 Rep. Shays, Who Supported Withdrawal Before Election, Now Backs Escalation - Think Progress  -

Two weeks before last November’s election, when he was on the verge of losing his House seat to anti-war challenger Diane Farrell (D), Rep. Chris Shays (R-CT) suddenly announced that he supported setting a timeline for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq. Shays won the race by 3 points.

Flash-forward three months. Yesterday, Shays declared on the House floor that he would not vote for the resolution opposing escalation in Iraq. “It is counterproductive for 535 members of the House of Representatives and Senate to micromanage the war.” He added that the resolution opposing escalation “sends the wrong message to the President, to our troops and to our enemies. … The only way we should leave Iraq is the same way we went in, together.” Watch it: Transcript: (more…)
15.Feb.2007 ‘24' cuts down on torture scenes. - Faiz  -

The Fox TV series ‘24' will include fewer torture scenes in its final episodes this season. Executive Producer Howard Gordon claimed that the change was not due pressure from the military, but rather because it had become cliché. “What was once an extraordinary or exceptional moment is starting to feel a little trite. The idea of physical coercion or torture is no longer a novelty or surprise,” Gordon said.
15.Feb.2007 Bush’s ‘gut-level bond’ is lost. - Faiz  -

According to President Bush’s former pollster Matthew Dowd, Bush’s “gut-level bond” with the American people “may be lost,” and “wholesale change” is needed in Iraq. As Stephen Colbert informed us, President Bush makes his decisions “straight from the gut” because “that’s where the truth lies, right down here in the gut.”
15.Feb.2007 Former CIA Official: Feith’s Claims Are ‘Hogwash,’ He Took A ‘We Have A War To Sell’ Approach - Faiz  -

In a recent interview with conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt, former Undersecretary of Defense Doug Feith attacked Paul Pillar, a 28-year veteran of the CIA who specialized in counterterrorism, for claiming that al Qaeda was not working with Saddam Hussein’s secular regime:

FEITH: I think that there were people, there were people in the CIA who had a theory that the Baathist secularists would not cooperate with the religious extremists in al Qaeda. And because they had that theory, when they looked at information that was, that showed, or that suggested that there was cooperation, they were inclined not to believe that information. […]

One of the main people who was propounding that theory…that the Baathists wouldn’t deal with the jihadists is now out in the private sector + he’s actually been quite vocal + has written articles + his name is Paul Pillar.

Pillar was right; Feith was wrong. The Senate Intelligence Committee’s Phase II report noted that Saddam Hussein “issued a general order that Iraq should not deal with al Qa’ida.”

Asked to respond to Feith’s attack, Pillar told ThinkProgress:

It is hogwash that community analysts, as Feith alleges, were peremptorily dismissing, or “suppressing,” reporting based on some bias on their part about what was or was not possible in Baathist-jihadi relations. In fact, I can’t think of any recent issue on which the intelligence community has exhaustively devoted more scrutiny — at great expenditure of senior as well as working-level time and attention–than this one of Iraqi-al-Qa’ida relations. I can say that confidently, based on intelligence assessments I read and meetings I attended.

Pillar told ThinkProgress that Feith’s office recommended that the CIA’s assessment on Iraq-al Qaeda relations “be ignored. Not challenged, not made the subject of a critical dialogue between policymakers and analysts, but ignored.” Pillar described how he personally witnessed Feith’s dismissive attitude towards intelligence professionals in one White House meeting in the fall of 2002:

When an intelligence officer responsible for counterterrorism politely pointed out that something Feith had just said (and was recommending as a public talking point) about Iraqi-al-Qa’ida relations was not supported by the intelligence, Feith dismissed my colleague’s point as “nit-picking” and quickly went on to the next subject. It was a don’t-bother-us-with-the-facts- we-have-a-war-to-sell approach.

Today, Feith claims he was merely asking “tough questions” and “challenging the CIA” prior to the war.

“The U.S. Central Command’s war plan for invading Iraq postulated

00.Aug.2002 that the U.S. would have only 5,000 troops left in Iraq as of December 2006,” according to newly released documents. “ Completely unrealistic assumptions about a post-Saddam Iraq permeate these war plans,” said an official from the National Security Archive, which obtained the documents.

The Los Angeles Times examines whether the Iranian Quds Forces, accused of smuggling weapons to Shiite forces in Iraq, are controlled by the Iranian government. The conclusion: “Experts aren’t sure.

Rep. John Murtha (D-PA) will today outline his plan to begin ending the war in Iraq “by stopping the deployment of troops from units that have been badly degraded by four years of combat.” Murtha’s legislation will require that U.S. troops who have already served be granted adequate time at home before redeploying + that “any troops sent to Iraq must be…deemed fully trained and equipped under existing military standards.”

State Farm, which insures one out of every three Mississippi homes, has decided to “stop writing new home and commercial policies throughout Mississippi,” which “could prompt other insurers to retreat further from the Katrina-battered region.”

“Lobbyists eager to revive the practice of taking staffers out for a few beers” are encouraged by a House memo that states that even under new ethics rules, lawmakers and staff can accept “food or refreshments of a nominal value offered other than as part of a meal.” “ Happy hours are OK again ,” said one corporate source. 15.Feb.2007 Oil lobbyist and Bush enviro lawyer share vacation home. - Nico  - “Nine months before agreeing to let ConocoPhillips delay a half-billion-dollar pollution cleanup, the government’s top environmental prosecutor [Sue Ellen Wooldridge] bought a $1 million vacation home with the company’s top lobbyist,” the AP reports. “Also in on the Kiawah Island, S.C., house deal was former Deputy Interior Secretary J. Steven Griles, the highest-ranking Bush administration official targeted for criminal prosecution in the Jack Abramoff corruption probe.”

UPDATE: The happy couple:

Griles, now an oil and gas lobbyist, began dating Wooldridge while he was her boss at Interior. He was the department’s No. 2 official from July 2001 to January 2005, behind only former Secretary Gale Norton. He and Duncan, a ConocoPhillips vice president who runs the company’s Washington office, both served on President Bush’s presidential transition team, Griles for the Interior Department, Duncan for the Energy Department.

Duncan has played a major role in getting the Bush administration’s backing for a proposed $25 billion natural gas pipeline reaching from Alaska to Midwest markets.

15.Feb.2007 US Lags World In Broadband Access - Zonk 203 -An anonymous reader writes "When It Comes To Broadband, U.S. Plays Follow The Leader says a story in IWeek.

Their thesis is that, while broadband access in the United States rose

00.Mar.2005 60 million users to

00.Mar.2006 -84 million , the US is well behind countries like England and China.

Indeed, what you may not realize is that the U.S. ranks a surprisingly poor 12th in worldwide broadband access, a situation which could threaten its ability to maintain its technological lead.

The federal government is no help: the FCC has almost no data on the rate of hi-speed adoption, or of what the speed and quality of those services are. Broadband is more expensive here than in other nations, as well, almost 10 times as expensive by some estimates. The cost and poor quality of service aren't from population density, aren't from lack of interest + are not from lack of technical know-how. So, what is holding us back?
Hitachi's Tiny RFID Chips - kdawson 83 - paltemalte writes

"Hitachi has just come out with a new crop of RFID tags, measuring only 1/20 of a millimeter square. That's 1/8 the size (in linear dimension) of Hitachi's currently shipping mu-chips, which are 0.4 mm square.

The new chip's width is slightly smaller than a human hair. These chips could put an end to shoplifting forever, but they could also be used by a governments or other entities to 'dust' crowds or areas, easily tagging anyone present without their knowledge or consent. Will someone come up with a surefire way of neutralizing chips that may be on your body or in your clothing?"

Hard to pin down a source on this. The article cites another blog, which points to an article in Japanese.
Quantum Computer Demoed, Plays Sudoku - kdawson 217 -
prostoalex writes "Canadian company D-Wave Systems is getting some technology press buzz after successfully demonstrating their quantum computer (discussed here earlier) that the company plans to rent out. Scientific American has a more technical description of how the quantum computer works, as well as possible areas of application: 'The quantum computer was given three problems to solve: searching for molecular structures that match a target molecule, creating a complicated seating plan + filling in Sudoku puzzles.' Another attendee provides some videos from the demo." Anyone want to guess how long before "qubit" gets compressed to "quit" (as "bigit" became "bit" in the last century)?

Power Generating Spacesuits - samzenpus 133 -Maggie McKee writes

"Piezoelectric sensors could help power future space missions. Astronauts' spacesuits may one day be covered in motion-sensitive proteins that could generate power from the astronauts' movement, according to futuristic research being conducted by a new lab in Cambridge, Massachusetts, US. Such 'power skins' could also be used to coat future human bases on Mars, where they could produce energy from the Martian wind. Eventually, the biologically derived suits might even be able to heal themselves."
