In the ownership society, patients control their own health care, parents control their own children's education + workers control their retirement savings." The values represented by a society where individuals own everything are anathema to the collective values of stewardship and ecological protection that science tells us we must foster to sustain natural systems burdened by the size and consumption patterns of the global population. In an ownership society, everyone has the right to own the most-polluting sports utility vehicle; in a society with commons values, those people who buy polluting SUVs are responsible for paying higher taxes to compensate society for taking from the common atmospheric resource we share. The commons values that we have relied upon since the Great Depression have been the underpinning of the economic and cultural growth of America. From Social Security to public education to the Clean Water Act, the framework for progressive political action has been the commons. Today, the commons framework is under attack + the individual movements that progressives have created to maintain our commons values are impotent to fight the larger battle through the lens of individual issues. Most environmentalists would not think that fighting against school vouchers and privatizing public education are the most important battlefronts for the protection of our forests. But if the battle is for the value of ownership versus the value of the commons, winning the fight over public education in a way that raises the profile of commons values may very well be the best battle that environmentalists can fight. Israeli experts have determined the thumb-sized object is a lot older than believed, dating to the 13th or 14th Century BC, rather than to the 8th Century BC, which scholars say was around the time of Solomon.
Israeli archaeologists had authenticated the item in 1988, believing it had been smuggled out of Israel nine years earlier. The museum bought it for more than $500,000 from an unknown owner who was paid through a numbered Swiss bank account.

25.Dec.2004 Out of 2.9 million ballots cast on Election Day, Republican Dino Rossi won by a mere 261 votes over Democrat Christine Gregoire. His lead was whittled to 42 votes in a subsequent machine recount. Democrats then paid for a hand recount, which got under way Dec. 8.
On Tuesday, Democrats said preliminary results of the hand recount put Gregoire in front for the first time — by a mere eight votes statewide. Republicans maintained the race was still too close to call.
A Gregoire lead could widen if the state Supreme Court allows the recently discovered ballots from King County to be added to the total. USA Supreme Court promised a speedy decision after hearing Wednesday´s arguments. The 723 ballots weren´t allowed in the hand recount so far, because a Pierce County judge granted a Republican request for a temporary restraining order Friday. The issue could be moot, however, if the eight-vote lead supporters claim for Gregoire stands.
The stunning turnaround was reported late Tuesday by the head of the state Democratic Party, who said it was based on party officials´ analysis of hand-counted returns from King County — the last county to finish the grueling process.
"We´re confident Christine Gregoire has been elected the governor of the state of Washington," Democratic Chairman Paul Berendt said. "I believe Dino Rossi should concede."
Neither King County nor the state Republican Party could confirm the recount results that led to the Democrats´ claim of an eight-vote margin. King County Elections spokeswoman Bobbie Egan said official results would be released Wednesday afternoon. The state´s other counties have already reported their recount totals.
More court battles appeared inevitable. Rossi has said that he would consider challenging the election results in court if he loses the third count after winning the first two. Republicans have already started preparing for a possible court challenge.
Gregoire, 57, a three-term attorney general, was the favorite going into the election against Rossi, 45, a real estate agent and former state senator.
About 350 people gathered Tuesday to show support for Rossi in front of the Supreme Court, at a rally sponsored by a conservative talk-radio station.

Harry Korrell, a lawyer for the Republican Party, argued that state law does not grant King County the right to correct its mistake. "A recount is limited to a retabulation of the ballots that were already determined to be valid," Korrell said.
The arguments were presented Wednesday in a lawsuit over 723 ballots that were excluded from first two counts because of mistakes made by election workers in the heavily Democratic King County.
The lawsuit was brought by King County, the state Democratic Party and the office of Secretary of State Sam Reed, a Republican.

The blast nearly killed the owner of the explosives, a naturalized American citizen named Michael Terence Meiring, a frequent guest over the last 10 years in the hotel and whose latest check-in after nearly a year of absence, was on December 14, 2001.
The badly injured Meiring, his legs mangled by the explosion, had claimed to hotel staff that he was into gold and treasure hunting + was a resident of 381 Snidee Ridge Trail, Calimino, Los Angeles, California (other documents list the address as 381 Smoke Ridge Trail, Calimesa, California).
The circumstances behind Meiring’s sudden departure from the hospital, inspite of his serious condition, raised questions about his real identity. A number of officials in ‘for background only’ interviews, speculated Meiring may have been an agent of the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).
Meiring himself, according to those who had spent some time with him, refered to himself as CIA although he would qualify that to mean “Christ In Action.”

25.Dec.2004 Mr. Shambora, an economics professor at Ohio University, moved during the summer but failed to notify the Athens County Board of Elections until the day before the presidential election. An official told him to use a provisional ballot.
But under Ohio law, provisional ballots are valid only when cast from a voter's correct precinct. Mr. Shambora was given a ballot for the wrong precinct, a fact he did not learn until after the election. Two weeks later, the board discarded his vote, adding him to a list of more than 300 provisional ballots that were rejected in that heavily Democratic county. Accidental? Perhaps. But when anecdotal report after anecdotal report indicates that these "accidents" target Democrats and almost never Republicans, some of us don't feel comfortable keeping the talk restricted to the level of the accidental.

In part one of this discussion I made the case that the violence and threats of the Christian conversion experience leads to a traumatic stress disorder common to victims of violence, which then evolves into a Paranoid Personality Disorder. In part two I discussed the origins of the doctrine of sin, since it is the fear inculcated by this doctrine that creates the disorder. This disorder is regarded as very difficult to treat, but the treatment involves the gradual introduction of doubt. Given the harmful effect of the doctrine of sin (paranoia) and the irrational inconsistency of the doctrine (it is reactionary) a satisfactory conclusion can be drawn the revolutionary doctrine of Gnosticism was the original Christian doctrine in that, unlike the doctrine of sin, its revolutionary philosophy is match (rather than a hindrance) to the cross symbol.

The doctrine of sin is so irrational when considered as a philosophy, riven with internal contradictions, that it must have been that case that such an unworthy doctrine was ever accepted in the first place is a testament to just how difficult it was to obscure the political meaning of the cross symbol + just how desperate was the attempt to obscure this meaning, in that a philosophy so irrational and inconsistent was the final resort, apparently nothing better ever having come along that would do the job.

Der Weltraum besteht aus einem dünnen Gas geladener Teilchen, die in Überschallgeschwindigkeit zwischen Sonne + Planeten fließen - dem Sonnenwind. Treffen diese geladenen Teilchen auf das Magnetfeld eines Planeten, entsteht elektromagnetische Strahlung.
Der Astrophysiker Don Gurnett von der University of Iowa hat nun die ersten Töne vom Saturn veröffentlicht: Geräusche, die von Saturns Rotation um die eigene Achse stammen + den Klang, als die "Cassini"-Sonde in das Magnetfeld des Planeten eintrat. Gurnett lauscht dem All-Funk schon seit Jahren. Er ist der leitende Forscher für das "Radio and Plasma Wave Science"-Instrument (RPWS) der Raumsonde, das Radio- und Plasmawellen auf dem Weg zum Saturn + in seiner Umlaufbahn misst und vergleicht. Der Grossteil der USA Bevölkerung hat in den vergangen vier Jahren scheinbar nicht das geringste dazu gelernt.
