In San Francisco, city planners have long spoken of free or low-cost city-wide access to the internet. That dream may become a reality, thanks to a company called Meraki, run by a couple of youngsters from MIT, who have come up with a new wireless plan.
But where will Meraki get its funding? This piece is an eye-opener:
Some of Meraki’s new capital, for example, will come from DAG Ventures, a firm co-founded by former investment partners from Bechtel. Their division, formerly known as Bechtel Investments, is now partly owned by the bin Laden family. (The new investment firm, San Francisco-based Fremont Group, remains largely in the hands of the Bechtel family.) DAG is also backing, along with the CIA, the San Francisco-based camera surveillance and intelligence gathering company, 3VR Security.
But DAG’s ties to the intel community run deeper than a handful of startups.
One of DAG’s co-founders, John M. Duff, Jr., sits on the executive committee of the World Affairs Council of Washington, D.C., along with former CIA chief R. Dass Erreger derart einfach genetisches Material austauschen können, war bis dahin unbekannt gewesen. Nun wächst die Angst, dass durch einen ähnlichen Übertragungsprozess weitere Antibiotika-resistente Pesterreger entstehen könnten. Die Forscher um Begon warnen auch davor, dass die Pest wieder instrumentalisiert werden könne: "Wir sollten nicht übersehen, dass die Pest im Verlauf der Geschichte immer wieder als Waffe eingesetzt wurde, vom Katapultieren infizierter Leichen über Stadtmauern über das Abwerfen infizierter Flöhe von Flugzeugen aus bis hin zur hochentwickelten Aerosol-Herstellung heute."

Das Buch ist eine Art Bericht von dem Legal Team, die zu dem G8-Gipfel die Demonstranten juristisch verteidigt haben. Und was die da erzählen, da geht einem die Hutkrempe hoch. Die haben da z.B. Leute verhaftet, weil sie nass waren. Vorher an dem Tag, so die Ausrede, habe jemand die Polizei mit Gegenständen beworfen, und sie wissen nicht, wer das war, aber sie haben ihn mit ihrem Wasserwerfer erwischt. Später haben sie dann Leute gesehen, die nass waren, und daraus messerscharf geschlossen, dass das die selben Leute sein müssen. Die Untersuchungsrichter haben alleine aus der Tatsache, dass jemand "von weit angereist" war (und dafür reichte denen schon Berlin), dass der nur zur Krawallmache gekommen sein kann.

Die US-Hypothekenkrise, die im Spätsommer 2007 für alle deutlich wurde, hatte sich im Herbst bereits zu einer internationalen Bankenkrise ausgeweitet. Bisher mußten Verluste von etwa 300 Milliarden Dollar abgeschrieben werden. Das brachte selbst eine Reihe von Großbanken und Finanzkonzernen an den Rand des Ruins. In der Konsequenz brach der Interbankmarkt, ein globaler Schlüsselmarkt der kapitalistischen Wirtschaft, auf dem sich Banken untereinander Geld leihen, so gut wie zusammen. Um ihn wieder flott zu bekommen, schoß die Europäische Zentralbank (EZB) vor Weihnachten die sagenhafte Summe von 500 Milliarden Euro in den kurzfristigen Geldmarkt. Auch die US-Zentralbank versuchte, den klammen Geldhäusern mit 60 Millarden Dollar neue Liquidität zu verschaffen. Diese Aktionen retteten das Bankensystem vor dem Kollaps. Vorerst. Das dicke Ende der US-Hypothekenkrise kommt noch. Nämlich dann, wenn Millionen US-Hausbesitzer plötzlich 50 bis 100 % mehr Zinsen für ihre Häuser zahlen müssen, deren stark gesunkener Marktwert inzwischen unter der Schuldsumme liegt.
Bisher wurde damit gerechnet, daß selbst bei guter wirtschaftlicher Entwicklung Hunderttausende Hausbesitzer dieses Jahr persönlichen Konkurs anmelden müssen. Im Falle einer Rezession wird alles noch sehr viel schlimmer. Wegen der Vermarktung der amerikanischen Hypotheken als handliche, lukrative Finanzpakete im internationalen Bankensystem, müssen dort weitere gewaltige Summen als Verluste abgeschrieben werden. Und deshalb dürfte die eigentliche Krise erst noch bevorstehen.

Das Gerät nutze eine zweistufige thermochemische Reaktion, um Kohlendioxid zu Kohlenmonoxid umzubauen, erläutert Nathan Siegel, leitender technischer Mitarbeiter in der Abteilung für Solartechnologie der Sandia-Labors. "CO 2 ist ein Verbrennungsprodukt, also kehren wir diese Verbrennung einfach um", sagt er. Das erzeugte Kohlenmonoxid könne dann mit konventionellen Techniken zur Produktion verschiedener Brennstoffe verwendet werden – darunter Wasserstoff, Methanol und sogar Benzin.

Fluor and Jacobs, two US engineering groups, have emerged as the only remaining bidders for the government’s one-third stake in AWE, which it put up for sale last summer. AWE is jointly owned by the government, through its stake in British Nuclear Fuels (BNFL), Serco, the British support services group + Lockheed Martin, the US defence group. If either Fluor or Jacobs emerges as victorious, AWE will be two-thirds owned by US companies. AWE is responsible for designing, manufacturing and decommissioning nuclear warheads for Trident, the fleet of nuclear submarines that is the UK’s sole nuclear deterrent.

Ich habe - mit Verlaub - selten einen dümmlicheren Artikel gelesen, wie diesen. Noch mehr dumpfe Vorurteile, auf so wenige zeilen verpackt, das schaffen ja nichtmal politische Radikale.
Er (der Artikel) ist kein journalistisches Produkt, es ist vielmehr eine Hetzschrift gg. Menschen die nicht so leben möchten, wie es den Autoren gefällt.
