Kean on Key Scene from Path to 9/11: ‘I Don’t Think The Facts Are Clear,’ ‘It Could Have Happened Any Number of Ways’ - Nico

Former 9/11 Commission co-chair Gov. Thomas Kean (R-NJ) served as a “senior consultant” for ABC’s The Path to 9/11 and “is listed in the credits as a co-executive producer.”

ABC Entertainment President Steve McPherson said Kean’s involvement was “crucial to the project” because

when you take on the responsibility of telling the story behind such an important event, it is absolutely critical that you get it right.”

But during a conference call yesterday, Kean himself questioned the accuracy of the miniseries.

Asked about a key scene in which the Clinton administration is accused of blocking a surefire chance to kill Osama bin Laden, Kean said, “I don’t think the facts are clear” about those eventsthat while ABC had “chose to portray it this way,” “my memory of it is that it could have happened any number of ways.” Listen to the audio of Kean

The New York Post summarized Kean’s perspective: “Kean…said he was all right with the made-up sceneeven though the video is being peddled to high schools as a teaching aid.” Full transcript:

Q: I mean, isn’t it the case that this film actually does show Sandy Berger hanging up the phone in the middle of a conference call,

when there are U.S. personnel whose lives are at risk on the groundthey have bin Laden in their sightsthat really nothing like that ever happened?

KEAN: Well, the question, Shaun, is whether — whether it was Sandy Berger, or whether it was the head of the CIA?

Whether the call was hung up on or whether it was totally — whether it was disrupted by a failure in communications? I mean, these are all historically, I think, open questions.

But again, this is a, you know, this is a miniseries, not a documentary.

++++

Q: On this moment, the Sandy Berger moment, to go back to that for a second, if it’s not actually supported by the Commission’s findings, how exactly did it make its way into the movie?

KEAN: Well, I think it made its way into the movie because they do base this not just on the 9/11 Commission report, but they base it on any number of other sources. I’m not aware of all of them. I’m aware of booksI know they used “Reckless Pursuit,” [inaudible] book. I know they used “The Cell,” which is John Miller’s book. Peter Lance, I read his bookI recognize scenes that came from “1,000 Years of Revenge,” by Peter Lance. I know there are a number of other books, articlesinterviews they used. So, where that particular — I think I know, I think I know a couple of places where they got that particular scene from — but, uh, so, so it comes from all these various, various sources.

Q: Did it raise any red flags, though, for you, someone who must have a, you know, inherent broad knowledge of these events, did these concern you at all?

KEAN: Yeah, well, I pointed out that the scene involving Afghanistan and the attempt to get bin Laden that was thwarted is a composite.

There were a number of these scenes, there were a number of tribes involved. Some of the people who were shown there probably weren’t there.

But, when you’re — as it was pointed out to me — when you’re doing a miniseries of this kind, you just can’t show that there were 15 tribes involved [laughs] at various timesso on. So it is a — it’s a composite.

But the basic fact is that on a number of occassions, they thought they might have been able to get bin Laden, but for any number of reasons the plug was pulled on those operations.

Q: And the fact that it implicates Sandy Berger so directly in that scene didn’t concern you?

KEAN: Well, it’s, it’s — I think the facts are, if you take that particular, that particular event when it happened, I don’t think the facts are clear, whether it’s Sandy Berger, or whether it’s the head of the CIA, whether a line went dead. I think there are, I think there are a number of — they chose to portray it this way, but my memory of it is that it could have happened any number of ways.

06.Sep.2006 ABC Refuses to Provide Copies of Path to 9/11 to Clinton, Albright, Berger - Judd

ABC has been aggressively advancing its inaccurate and politically slanted miniseries, “The Path to 9/11,” to the right wing.

Big players like Rush Limbaugh have been provided copies, as have obscure right-wing bloggers like Patterico.

But ABC has refused to provide a copy to President Clinton’s office.

Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright + former National Security Adviser Samuel Berger have also requested copies of the film from ABCboth have been denied.

Both Berger and Albright are harshly criticized in the film in scenes that, according to former counterterrorism czar Richard Clarke, are “180 degrees from what happened.”

Here is an excerpt from Albright’s letter:

While I have requested a copy of the broadcast, I have yet to receive one.

I have been informed by some who had been given the right to view the broadcast that the drama depicts scenes that never happened, events that never took place, decisions that were never made +

conversations that never occurred; it asserts as fact things that are not fact.

For example, one scene apparently portrays me as refusing to support a missile strike against bin Laden without first alerting the Pakistanis;

it further asserts that I notified the Pakistanis of the strike over the objections of our military.

Neither of these assertions is true.

In fact, the 9/11 commission reports states (page 117),

Since the missiles headed for Afghanistan had had to cross Pakistan, the Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs was sent to meet with Pakistan’s army chief of staff to assure him the missiles were not coming from India.

Officials in Washington speculated that one or another Pakistani official might have sent a warning to the Taliban or Bin Ladin.”

You can read the full text of Berger’s letter here and Albright’s letter here.

"As word spread that HP was dumping Board member George Keyworth for press leaks, Newsweek broke the bigger story:

HP Chairwoman Patricia Dunn was so obsessed with finding the leaker that she authorized a team of independent electronic-security experts to spy on the phone records of calls made from HP Directors' home + private cell phones. Not only that, phone records were obtained via pretexting, the controversial practice of obtaining information under false pretenses.

After Dunn laid out the surveillance scheme for the Board last May, HP Director Tom Perkins quit on the spot, characterizing Dunn's actions as illegal and unethical.

HP is also coming under fire for playing dumb to the SEC about the reasons behind Perkins' resignation.

Perkins, who helped launch HP's computer division in the 60's, has asked the FTC, FCC + the Justice Department to investigate."

Top Bush Counterterrorism Official: ABC’s Path to 9/11 Is ‘Shameful,’ ‘Straight Out of Disney and Fantasyland’ - Judd -

Last night on MSNBC’s Scarborough Country, Roger Cressey — a top counterterrorism official to Bush II and Clintonblasted ABC’s docudrama “The Path to 9/11.” C

ressy said “it’s amazing…how much they’ve gotten wrong. They got the small stuff wrong” and “then they got the big stuff wrong.”

He added that a scene where the Clinton administration passes on a surefire opportunity to take out bin Laden is “something straight out of Disney and fantasyland.

It’s factually wrong. And that’s shameful.” Watch it:

Write ABC + tell them to tell the truth about 9/11. Full transcript:

SCARBOROUGH: Roger, let me begin with you. There are points of this docudrama that are more drama than fact.

But talk about Bill Clinton and the central premise by ABC that he should have done more to get Bin Laden.

CRESSY: Joe, it’s amazing, based on what I’ve seen so far is how much they’ve gotten wrong.

They got the small stuff wrong such as Khalid Sheikh Mohammed instructing Ahmed Rassam to carry out the millenium attacks.

Then they got the big stuff wrong, this fantasy about how we had a CIA officer + the Northern Alliance leader Ahmed Massoud looking at Bin Laden and they breathlessly call the White House to say we need to take him out and the White House said no. I mean it’s sheer fantasy.

So, if they want to critique the Clinton administration and the Bush administration, based on fact, I think that’s fine. But what ABC has done here is something straight out of Disney and fantasyland.

It’s factually wrong. And that’s shameful.

SCARBOROUGH: But at the same time, doesn’t history show that Bill Clinton had several opportunities to go after bin Laden, but the President + his cabinet were afraid to do so because they may offend some people in the Arab world?

CRESSY: Actually, Joe, that had nothing to do with it. If you read the 9/11 Commission report, it makes it very clear.

In most of those cases, George Tenet, the Director of the CIA, said because there was single source intelligence it was his recommendation to the President not to take the shot.

There was never a case where we had a clear shot at Bin Laden and the decision to take it wasn’t made.

September 6, 2006 - Think Progress -

Bush said yesterday, “America makes no distinction between those who commit acts of terrorthose that harbor and support them, because they’re equally guilty of murder.”

Meanwhile, a Pakistani general said bin Laden “would not be taken into custody” as long as he agreed to live like a “peaceful citizen.” (Pakistan denies the ABC report.)

The Pentagon’s new Army field manual “provides Geneva Convention protections for all detainees and eliminates a secret list of interrogation tactics.”

The manual bans several controversial techniques: “forcing prisoners to endure long periods of solitary confinement, using military dogs to threaten prisoners, putting hoods over inmates’ heads” and waterboarding.

On the eve of his first trip to Washington, former Iranian president Mohammad Khatami warned that U.S. military action in the Middle East has backfired,

producing greater terrorism, imperiling the future of Iraq + damaging America’s long-term interests.”

A digital divide still separates whites and minorities . Sixty-seven % of white students use the Internet, compared with just 44 % of black students and 47 % of Hispanic students.

Iraqis are changing their names to protect themselves. “The country’s Sunni-Shiite bloodletting is driving many Iraqis to bury the very essence of their identity: their names.

[W]ith sectarian violence surging, Iraqis fear that the name on an identification card, passport or other document could become an instant death sentence if seen by the wrong people.”

Iraq’s parliament yesterday voted to extend by a month a nationwide state of emergency .

The state of emergency has been extended several times since it was first imposed in 2004? + there “has been no serious move to roll it back.”

06.Sep.2006 https://www.madcowprod.com/ These scamsters ties to American intelligence are clear and unmistakable.

One example: Barry Seal was the chief pilot—until his assassination in 1986, reportedly at Vice President Bush’s behest—in the weapons-and-drug scandal that came to be known as Iran Contra.

As the Iran Contra probe showed, Adnan Khashoggi played a key role in brokering the illegal weapons trafficking from the USA to Iran.

Years later, Barry Seal's longtime attorney incorporated Genesis Intermedia.

Years after that, Khashoggi and company used the stock of Genesis Intermediaone other company, to steal $320 million dollars.

The other company whose stock was used to steal millions was called Holiday RV Stores. It belonged to Miami attorney Michael Farkas, better known as the founder of the company w hich owned the DC9 recently busted with 5.5 tons of cocaine onboard.

06.Sep.2006 https://www.madcowprod.com/ As it happens, having an address at Huffman Aviation at the Venice Airport apparently is the “
green light from the DEA” we were told about by airport executives in Venice, as witnessed by the recent seizure of 5.5 tons of cocaine on a DC9 owned by a company which once used Huffman’s address.

Although 5.5 tons of cocaine would seem to rate at least mild interest from  American law enforcement, the Tampa DEA refuses to comment. The company’s owner appears to have no fear of being picked up anytime soon, even just for questioning.

What’s going on? Let’s take a look.

About that ABC 9/11 shlockudrama:

Pakistan also harbors A.Q. Khan, nuke-seller to terrorists.
Yet Bush continues to treat Pakistan as an allyeven gives that nation aid!
And ABC is airing a deceit-filled docudrama which accuses Bill Clinton of being soft on Bin Laden!
And progressive writers have yet to notice this astounding story! Can you imagine how the right-wing media would react if such a thing happened on a Democrat's watch?
The past is never dead: One of the big surprises of the war in Lebanon was Hezbollah's ability to fend off Israeli mechanized units. Very few people have noticed
this footnote to Max Rodenbeck's NYRB piece on the conflict: Ironically, however, some anti-tank gadgetry is likely to have been 1980s vintage and American-made. The Reagan administration plied Iran with TOW wire-guided missiles as part of the Iran-contra boondoggle, a scandal which, incidentally, implicated the current administration's leading Hezbollah hawk, Elliott Abrams, the National Security Council's Middle East policy chief.

Iran may have shipped these goods to Hezbollah . (Emphasis added.)

The discussion veered into the subject of former Army Chief of Staff Eric Shinseki’s pre-war prediction that several hundred thousand soldiers” would be needed to maintain control over post-war Iraq. Snow falsely claimed that Shinseki was only referring to the number of troops needed to “go in and take Baghdad.”

Snow concluded the segment by stating, “I’m not going to hold Donald Rumsfeld accountable.” Watch it.

00.Feb.2003 -testimony-As his- makes clear, Shinseki suggested a massive force would be needed to assert “post-hostilities control,” not just to take over Baghdad.

SHINSEKI: I would say that what’s been mobilized to this point, something on the order of several hundred thousand soldiers, are probably, you know, a figure that would be required. We’re talking about post-hostilities control over a piece of geography that’s fairly significant with the kinds of ethnic tensions that could lead to other problems. And so, it takes significant ground force presence to maintain safe and secure environment to ensure that the people are fed, that water is distributed, all the normal responsibilities that go along with administering a situation like this. 06.Sep.2006 ABCs 9/11 Docudrama Mangles Facts, Smears Washington Post - Judd  ABC’s planned docudrama The Path to 9/11 contains numerous inaccuracies and misrepresentations. Here’s another one.

On the second night of Path to 9/11, a CIA analyst makes the following complaint:

Besides, ever since the Washington Post disclosed that we intercepted his calls, UBL [Usama bin Laden] stopped using phones altogether. He’s using couriers now, like they did a thousand years ago.

This isn’t true on a number of levels. First, as Daniel Benjamin makes clear, the publication at issue is the Washington Times:

Here’s what happened: On Aug. 21, 1998, the Washington Times, the capital’s unabashedly conservative newspaper, which regularly breaks more intelligence-related stories than any other daily, ran an article saying that Bin Laden “keeps in touch with the world via computers and satellite phones.” This occurred less than two weeks after the destruction of the U.S. embassies in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam by al-Qaida and the day after the USA had bombed al-Qaida targets in Afghanistan and Sudan. After that report, Bin Laden stopped using his phone and let his aides do the calling. This story is recounted in both The Age of Sacred Terror (2002), which I co-wrote with my National Security Council colleague Steven Simonthe 9/11 Commission Report.

Not only is the scene inconsistent with the 9/11 commission report, it’s perpetuating an urban myth. Actually, “Bin Laden’s use of a satellite phone had already been widely reported by August 1998he stopped using it within days of a cruise missile attack on his training camps in Afghanistan.”

Why was it included anyway? One explanation: it is frequently cited by right-wing politicians “seeking to impose greater restrictions on the news media.” This is a film that doesn’t let the facts get in the way of its agenda.

06.Sep.2006 ABC Planning Massive Free Distribution of 9/11 Docudrama - Nico

ABC is planning a massive free distribution of its planned docudrama The Path to 9/11, including sending letters to 100,000 high school teachers encouraging them to have their students watch the series.

Variety magazine reports:

[ABC is] allowing consumers to download the complete miniseries — for free — via Apple’s iTunes Music Store . Mini also will be streamed for free via ABC.com XM Radio has pacted with the network to make an audiocast of the film available to its subscribers. […]

To spread the word about “Path to 9/11,” ABC is sending 100,000 high school educators a letter from 9/11 Commission co-chair Tom Keane informing them of the various platforms on which the mini is available. ABC and Scholastic have pacted to produce an online study guide.

ABC has also made deals to have the docudrama aired internationally, including in Britain on BBC and in India.

Most American high school students weren’t even teenagers when the 9/11 attacks occured. Now ABC is trying to present those students — and scores of people around the world — with its slanted and inaccurate version of history, which blames President Clinton for 9/11 while whitewashing the failures of the Bush administration.

06.Sep.2006 Richard Clarke Blasts Key Scene In ABC’s 9/11 Docudrama - Judd

11.Sep.2006+11.Sep.2006 ABC is planning to air a “docudrama” called Path to 9/11, billed by writer Cyrus Nowrasteh as “an objective telling of the events of 9/11.”

The first night of Path to 9/11 has a dramatic scene where former National Security Adviser Sandy Berger refuses to give the order to the CIA to take out bin Laden — even though CIA agents, along with the Northern Alliance, have his house surrounded. Rush Limbaugh, who refers to Nowrasteh as “a friend of mine,” reviews the action:

So the CIA, the Northern Alliance, surrounding a house where bin Laden is in Afghanistan, they’re on the verge of capturing, but they need final approval from the Clinton administration in order to proceed.

So they phoned Washington. They phoned the White House. Clinton and his senior staff refused to give authorization for the capture of bin Laden because they’re afraid of political fallout if the mission should go wrongif civilians were harmed…Now, the CIA agent in this is portrayed as being astonished. “Are you kidding?” He asked Berger over and over, “Is this really what you guys want?”

Berger then doesn’t answer after giving his first admonition, “You guys go in on your own. If you go in we’re not sanctioning this, we’re not approving this,” and Berger just hangs up on the agent after not answering any of his questions.

ThinkProgress has obtained a response to this scene from Richard Clarke, former counterterrorism czar for Bush I, Clinton and Bush IInow counterterrorism adviser to ABC:

1. Contrary to the movie, no US military or CIA personnel were on the ground in Afghanistan and saw bin Laden.

2. Contrary to the movie, the head of the Northern Alliance, Masood, was no where near the alleged bin Laden camp and did not see UBL.

3. Contrary to the movie, the CIA Director actually said that he could not recommend a strike on the camp because the information was single sourced and we would have no way to know if bin Laden was in the target area by the time a cruise missile hit it.

In short, this scene — which makes the incendiary claim that the Clinton administration passed on a surefire chance to kill or catch bin Laden — never happened. It was completely made up by Nowrasteh.

The actual history is quite different. According to the 9/11 Commission Report (pg. 199), then-CIA Director George Tenet had the authority from President Clinton to kill Bin Laden. Roger Cressy, former NSC director for counterterrorism, has written, “Mr. Clinton approved every request made of him by the CIA and the U.S. military involving using force against bin Laden and al-Qaeda.”

Tell ABC to tell the truth about 9/11.

06.Sep.2006 Bint Jbeil; Hezbollah?s Blood Victory
MIKE WHITNEY There?s a sign at the entrance to Bint Jbeil that says: "Bint Jbeil?Capital of Freedom". The cheery greeting contrasts dramatically with the vast devastation that lies just beyond. Bint Jbeil was a bustling hamlet in Southern Lebanon that became the central battlefield in Israel?s? war of aggression. It withstood the IAFs withering aerial bombardments as well as a month-long siege which left most of the town in complete ruins. Bint Jbeil is where a small group of! committed nationalists stood up to the mighty IDF in "toe to toe combat and forced them to withdraw. Its where the sluggish wheel of Middle East history shifted ever-so slightly, challenging the dominance of Israeli military power as the sole agent for change in the region. The results of the battle have already sent shock-waves through the area?s political landscape.

Economic Empire Building and Domestic Decay
James Petras While most commentators have in recent months focused on US and Israeli militarism in the Middle East and South Asia, US capitalism is preparing for a new offensive domestically and overseas. Three areas are targeted by the Bush Administration and its Congressional allies: 1) a renewed effort to privatize social security, reduce social programs such as Medicare and Medicaid while increasing individual payments, further reduce taxes on corporations and the r! ich and state regulatory controls over corporations, especially the Sarbanes-Oxley Law, in order to ease corporate global financial transactions, at the risk of small investors; 2) a big push by US multinational corporations to finance their exploitation and takeovers of 'emerging countries? (Third World) by capturing local savings; 3) a major effort to lower trade and investment barriers ? such as local subsidies and tariffs ? for US industrial, financial + other service corporations while retaining a privileged place for heavily subsidized US agro-exporters + protected US agro businesses in the domestic market...

Iraq and its enemies
Gabriele Zamparini, The cat's dream ...The serious questions regarding Iraq Body Count are not a "ridiculous bickering" as a journalist "on the left" and supposedly "on our side" recently wrote me. These questions regard the very central issue of the Iraq invasion and occupation: the scale of the horror brought to the Iraqi People by our governments, with our money and in our name. But the anti-war movement and the so called "left" is shamefully silent on this subject, when not defending Iraq! Body Count against those who dared to ask questions. Why? Shouldn?t we all be interested in what?s really going on in Iraq? But this seems to be the point. In the West, too many on the "left" and in the so-called "anti-war movement" are not interested in reality. Iraq seems to exist just in function of their power games. Too often "peace and justice" have become a business that has nothing to do with the oppressed victims? struggle and all to do instead with the acquisition of privileges and power that neutralizes real dissent and block change. The elites in the "left" and in the antiwar movement have become so obsessed with their own power, with their own "place in society" to be completely indifferent to the facts,

to compromise with the perils of rewriting history, conceding points that shouldn't be conceded... https://www.uruknet.info/?p=26395

The Israel Lobby and the US Response to the War in Lebanon
Nihad Awad, John MearsheimerStephen Walt ...What?s our core argument? We make several big arguments in our paper. First, we just document the level of support the USA provides to Israel?about $3 billion a year in economic and military assistance each year. That?s about $500 per year per Israeli citizen, despite the fact that Israel is a relatively wealthy industrial power. That aid is largely unconditional. It?s not linked to Israeli behav! ior. It gets its aid when it builds settlements; it gets its aid when it spies on us, when it sells American high technology to countries like China, or when it attacks civilians in the West Bank, Lebanon or Gaza. Israel also gets consistent diplomatic support from the USA.

00.000.1982 -Since- for example, we have vetoed 33 U.N. Security Council resolutions that were critical of Israel. That?s a total greater than all of the vetoes by all of the other Security Council members put together. And finally, we take Israel?s side in wartime, as John is going to discuss in some detail. Moreover, over time we have tended to favor Israel?s side whenever peace talks do occur... https://www.uruknet.info/?p=26385

The Next Phase of the Middle East War
MICHEL CHOSSUDOVSKY, Global Research Israel's war on Lebanon is an integral part of a US sponsored "military roadmap". The war on Lebanon, which has resulted in countless atrocities including the destruction of the nation's economy and civilian infrastructure, is " a stage" in a sequence of carefully planned military operations. The underlying objective of this war was the militarization of L! ebanon, including the stationing of foreign troops, as a precondition for carrying out the next phase of a broader military agenda...

Blair and His Extremist-Moderates
Yamin Zakaria Blair may be drunk with imperial arrogance riding on the tails of George Bush, but his deputy John Prescott seems to be sober, as demonstrated by his recent comments about Bush. If Bush was present, he might have said: Yo Bush, you and your policy is crap. Perhaps, John Prescott is preparing to give the Labour party a new face, because a new leadership contest may be looming; and criticising Bush is perhaps the first step in distancing from Blair?s foreign policy, p! articularly the unpopular war in Iraq. Just prior to the war in Lebanon, the Christian fundamentalist Blair allegedly got another divine inspiration to aid his ongoing holy crusade ("war on terror"), against the Muslim infidels! Thus, he made the holy proclamation of promoting the moderates, short for moderate Muslims. Who are these moderates? It is easy to deduce that: if Blair wants the moderates to be the voice of the Muslims and Islam, it means they comply with his interests and his foreign policies in the Islamic world.

Conversely, extremists are those who oppose Blair?s foreign policies in the Islamic world.... https://www.uruknet.info/?p=26403

The beautiful game turns nasty as sectarian feud spreads to sport
Michael Howard, The Guardian Mohammed Abbas still isn't sure why he was plucked from the street by a group of armed men, some wearing police uniforms, to be interrogated and tortured for five days. He had never been involved in politics, he steered clear of crimehe kept his religious views to himself. His family was not particularly well-heeled. But perhaps it was the 34-year-old engineer's refusal to play for a local soccer team run by membe! rs of Moqtada al-Sadr's al-Mahdi militia that made him a target. Certainly, the repeated hammer blows to his knees during his ordeal has meant that Mr Abbas - a popular figure on Baghdad's football scene, a former member of Iraq's youth squadan avid Manchester United fan - may never play again. Now in hiding in Iraqi Kurdistan, Mr Abbas (not his real name) said: "I must be very careful because I still have family in Baghdad and I just don't know who exactly took me."

Are Physicists Smart? Disciplined Professionals serve Power
"80 % of physicists in North America work for the military"
Prof. Denis Rancourt, GlobalResearch.ca It is generally assumed that physicists are smart people. Even some chemists look up to physicists. The inventors of the atomic bomb are held in awe, as are the cosmologists! that gave us black holes and worm holes into parallel universes. The proverbial rocket scientists are physicists. It is generally assumed that anyone who has studied quantum mechanics and can work-in the concept of entropy at a cocktail party is pretty smart. That generally, physicists, as a group, are pretty stupidcertainly no smarter than any other group of self-centered and self-serving professionals... https://www.uruknet.info/?p=26389

"With $30 billion lost to shoplifting and employee theft last year, retailers are turning to increasingly sophisticated electronic surveillance systems to fight theft. Some systems, like RFID tags, have been well-publicized by privacy advocates. Others are less well known: video surveillance systems are being tied to software that can recognize specific types of activity and identify individuals; and data-mining software is being used to analyze everything from shoppers' habits to irregular register activity." From the article: "Despite this revolution in retail tech, you won't find many stores bragging about their new security tools. No one wants to tip off shoplifters or advertise that they suspect their customers. That's why so much of the technology is hidden in the first place. But another reason stores don't talk much about surveillance is that they know it sparks concerns about privacy. Consumer groups and legislators have opposed the spread of RFID and video surveillance for just that reason."

Another 150,000 Years of CO2 Data - kdawson 635

"We've known since 2004 that the past 440,000 years have shown atmospheric carbon dioxide levels varying between about 200 and 300 ppmv, the difference in extremes being the difference between advancing ice sheets and our current clime. In 2005 the data were analyzed back to 650,000 years and were found to be much the same — Al Gore was proud to be able to show that then-new analysis in his 2006 movie An Inconvenient Truth. Now all 800,000 years of the ice column have been analyzedthe data show much the same pattern, according to the researcher: 'When carbon dioxide changed there was always an accompanying climate change.

Over the last 200 years human activity has increased carbon dioxide to well outside the natural range' — to 380 ppmv."

Wi-Fi Fingerprints - the End of MAC Spoofing? - kdawson 153 judgecorp -

"Wireless devices can be identified by variations in their radio signaling, known as their 'transceiverprint,' according to research reported in Techworld.

The Canadian researcher, Jeyanthi Hall, related the prints to MAC addresses and got a positive ID for devices connecting to a Wi-Fi network, claiming 95% success with no false positives. Once they work out how to do this without a dedicated signal analyzer and neural network processing, it's the end of MAC spoofing on wireless networks."

First Responder Networks 5 Years After 9/11 - kdawson 167 stinkymountain -

"Five years after 9/11, you'd think all of the nation's first responders would be on a state-of-the-art wireless network that would enable police, fire and other emergency personnel to talk to each other in case of a disaster. But they're not - yet. Network World ran an investigative piece sketching why progress has been so slowdescribing the progress that has been made." The article leads off with a scenario that represents the toughest possible test for a first-responder network. Even the best imaginable networked system might bog down in the midst of "fog of war" situations.

Google to Give Data To Brazilian Court - Zonk 157+ Edu a Washington Post article about Google's olive branch to the Brazilian courts. Despite previously refusing to reveal search information to the U.S. government, the company has announced they'll be releasing information on hate groups to the Brazilian courts. The move is intended to allow the Brazilian government to identify users associated with homophobic and racist groups. From the article: "Orkut pulls objectionable words and pictures from user sites, but Google stores content it feels could be useful in a lawsuit. Orkut is especially popular in Brazil, which accounts for 75 % of its 17 million users. Legal and privacy experts said that Google had no choice but to comply with the court order. 'From the law enforcement perspective, if the records are in the possession of the business, the business can be compelled to produce them,' said Marc Rotenberg, executive director of the Washington-based Electronic Privacy Information Center."

04.Sep.2006 https://www.cannonfire.blogspot.com/ Must-reads

1. Iraq. Hopes of peace in Iraq, always slender, have now beome thinner than onionskin, due to the waning influence of Shi'ite moderate leader Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani. For the grim news, read this Telegraph piece. For a grim analysis of the grim news, read emptywheel here.
Do we have any good moves? Nope. The best Bush can do is to pull out and release the beasts of chaos, an outcome which will suit Israel just fine. The Rovian hordes will blame Clinton for the debacle30%-to-50% of the American people will believe 'em. Only the oil-theft factor keeps us in Iraq.
2. Why Mexico Matters. As you probably know, the real winner of the Mexican presidential election, Andres Manuel Lopez-Obrador, has announced his intention to set up a
parallel government.
Michael Collins, friend to this blog, has a
blockbuster piece on the Mexican vote revolt up on BradBlog. Here are two key grafs: After examining evidence form the election, Professor James K. Galbraith of the University of Texas concluded his analysis with these findings: (a) Obrador started out 126,000 votes in the hole (to Calderon's even start); (b) this error was never corrected; and (c) at the end of the night "adjustments" were made to make it appear Calderon won. There is an active community of academics in Mexico who are providing analyses demonstrating this absurdity.
This will sound familiar. Calderon's brother-in-law wrote the software program that tabulated and reported votes for the "independent" election institute. The brother-in-law denied this but Mexico's press actually investigates these things and forced him to admit his involvement by producing contracts his company had with the institute. 3. The drug jet. Slap me: I've let an entire week pass without mentioning
Daniel Hopsicker's latest piece on that drug-laden Skyway jet - which, as we've seen, was owned and operated by some rather "spooky" folks here in the states. Read Hopsicker's piece in conjunction with the afore-cited expose by Michael Collins. Turns out the Spanish-language media have uncovered some fascinating news: The Mexican press is filled with reports of the involvement of a sizeable number of officers in the Federal Preventive Police (PFP), a 7-year old FBI-trained federal police force whose main mission, ironically, is enforcing Mexico’s laws against drug trafficking. More: Agents of two Mexican federal law enforcement agencies, the Policía Federal Preventiva (PFP) and of the Federal Agency of Investigación (AFI), reportedly attempted to prevent airport personnel from calling in the military to search the DC9 after it had aroused suspicions. Despite the obvious signs of his administration's involvement, Mexican President Vicente Fox has made a half-hearted attempt to blame the drug runs on Hugo Chavez and - of course - Andres Manuel Lopez-Obrador. Jeez, could these creeps be any more obvious?
4. "This is diabolical!" Such was
Dennis Kucinich's reaction when he personally scoped out what Israel has wrought in Lebanon. Expect to see a flurry of hit-pieces denouncing Kucinich as an anti-Semite.
5. Google: A company that listens. Google is developing technology to
eavesdrop on the audio obtainable from your PC mic; software will analyze the sounds and - get this - direct certain ads to your computer screen based on the type of television and radio programs overheard in your household.
Perhaps they will also try to sell you sex toys based on the way you moan.
Pretty soon the security industry is going to find a way to hijack the Google feed and use it for full on espionage.
Google says that its fingerprinting technology makes it impossible for the company (or anyone else) to eavesdrop on other sounds in the room, such as personal conversations, because the conversion to a fingerprint is made on the PCa fingerprint can't be reversed, as it's only an identity.
But we should think that "spyware" might take on an extra meaning if someone less scrupulous decided on a similar piece of software. Why speak in the future tense? Let's presume that dear old General Hayden beat Google to the punch.
We need a freeware solution - an onscreen button that will turn the mics off and on. Better still, let's have an "off" switch on the headsets.
We may also want to boycott Google. They're not the only search engine out there, you know.
(Updated note: My ladyfriend insists that this story must be a hoax. Perhaps, but the author's
other stories seem serious enough.)

Having earned his masters in Reagan race policy, by speaking at Bob Jones University George W. Bush is well on his way to his PhD: philosopher of demagoguery.

Derrick Z. Jackson is a Globe columnist. https://www.commondreams.org/views/020900-101.htm -by Derrick Jackson
Last week, in a graduation ceremony mysteriously underplayed by the white press, George W. Bush earned his master's degree from the Ronald Reagan Institute of Race Policy and Management.

Reagan established the institute in 1980 by kicking off his presidential campaign at the Neshoba County Fair in Philadelphia, Miss.

The Neshoba County Fair for decades had been the legendary gathering spot of segregationists and near the site of the grisly murders of three civil rights workers.

Reagan took the microphone and, to the roar of thousands of white fairgoers, said, ''I believe in states' rights.''

Anyone who knows Southern race policy knows that saying ''states' rights'' is like waving a Confederate flag, telling racists they can do whatever they want to black folks.

Reagan was never hounded by the press as to how he could make such a statement and expect to be elected as president.

Reagan's handlers slyly scheduled a speech two days later before the Urban League. At the Urban League speech, Reagan said:

''For too many people, conservative has come to mean antipoor, antiblackantidisadvantaged. Perhaps some of you question whether a conservative really feels sympathy and compassion for the victims of social + economic misfortune and of racial discrimination.... If you think of me as the caricatured conservative, then I ask you to listen carefully and maybe you'll be surprised by our broad areas of agreement.''

History shows that the real Reagan was the one who spoke at the Neshoba County Fair and not the one at the Urban League. His presidency quickly became the most antipoor, antiblackantidisadvantaged in the latter half of the 20th century.

Now, 20 years later, here comes George W. Bush. Stung by his defeat in the New Hampshire primary, Bush needed a trump card in the South Carolina Republican primary.

This was a problem, since he and John McCain are running neck-and-redneck on issues dear to racists. Both have chickened out on saying it is time to stop flying the Confederate flag over the state capitol.

Bush may have found his ace. He kicked off his homestretch drive in South Carolina by speaking at Bob Jones University. Bob Jones represents one of Reagan's early signs of being antiblack. Reagan fought to revoke the Internal Revenue Service's authority to deny charitable tax exemptions to the school. The denial was over the school's ban on interracial dating.

The Supreme Court, in an 8-1 decision, rebuked Reagan, saying schools that practice racial segregation can indeed be denied tax exemptions. Reagan would later appoint the lone dissenter, William Rehnquist, to chief justice.

Bob Jones University still bans interracial dating. George W.'s brother Jeb, the Florida governor who is married to a Latina, could not have graduated. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, who has a white wife and who was appointed by George W.'s father, could not have graduated.

Bob Jones also practices homophobia. Two years ago, when a gay, 60-year-old alum asked if he could come back to visit the school, the dean of students wrote back, ''With grief we must tell you that as long as you are living as a homosexual, you, of course, would not be welcome on the campus and would be arrested for trespassing if you did. We take no delight in that action. Our greatest delight would be in your return to the Lord.''

George W. took delight in validating this perverted version of Christianity, telling 6,000 students, almost all white, ''I look forward to publicly defending our conservative philosophy.'' He said he would seek ''compassionate results.'' But compassion could not have been foremost on Bush's mind, since it was only after the speech that he criticized the school's racial policies, not during it and not directly to the students.

Ivy Lee, who some consider to be the father of modern PR, invented the press release in 1906.

One of his first clients was the Pennsylvania Railroad .  Following a major accident, Lee not only convinced the railroad to distribute a press release to journalists before they heard rumors about what had happened, he also invited reporters and photographers to the scene of the accident and provided a special train to get them there.

In the weeks that followed, newspapers and elected officials effusively praised the railroad for its openness and apparent concern for the safety of its passengers.

Later that spring, some anthracite coal operators hired Lee to represent them during a strike.  This time, when he sent out press releases, journalists started expressing hostility, calling them ads disguised as stories sent to manipulate news coverage.

In response, Ivy Lee issued a “ Declaration of Principles ” that stated, “This is not a secret press bureau.  All our work is done in the open.  We aim to supply news.”

03.Sep.2006 War is not a solution for terrorism -By Howard Zinn

05.Sep.2006 The Great American Oligarchy -By Stephen Fleischm
The war in Iraq is the best example of an oligarchy at work-produced and managed to make money and to secure the remaining reserves of oil in the world. As they say, the world's oil has "peaked". It's all down hill from here, so we better grab it before somebody else does. To do this, we're got to keep a perpetual war spinning in the best oil-producing areas, the Middle East and the Caspian region.

05.Sep.2006 https://cannonfire.blogspot.com/2006/09/rove-on-q.html So they deflect. They distract. They dissemble.
But there seems to be an awful lot of it flyin' around right nowone cannot help but wonder what is motivating this level of desperation. In '04, they just called out the swiftboaters and orange alerts, which seemed to work. But now, they've lost two huge money sources in Abramoff and DeLay, the natives are getting very restless about incumbents and they're not at all happy about just about everything from the war to the economy, the WH is under so many scandal clouds they look like Pigpen, even the ranks are in mutinygosh, it's not clear Rove's Miracle Vote Manipulation machinery will work with significant Democratic leads and so many eyes on that machinery itself.
Recently, the smell of panic has been getting mighty pungentthere may be reason to suspect perhaps there's more to it than the obvious.
Larry Johnson has posted the tantalizing speculation that the reason there is so much fretting and strutting specifically about Fitz of late is that it's time to discredit the prosecutor, time to kill the messenger. This, he says, bodes a move from Fitz in the form of indictments for Cheney and Steven Hadley.
Given what such a bomb would do to the Republicans' chances of any wins in November, Rove would of course be doing major league pre-emptive damage control. Right on cue.

05.Sep.2006 https://cannonfire.blogspot.com/2006/09/tale-of-drugs-and-spooks.html One should never forget Goss' mysterious promotion of Kyle "Dusty" Foggo, who had a background in that part of the world. Foggo was, in turn, a long-time friend to the notorious Brent Wilkes, the prime mover in the Cunningham corruption scandal.
In a
previous piece on Wilkes, I presented evidence suggesting that he has long had a relationship with the CIA. Wilkes had worked for the World Finance Corporation, a predecessor to BCCI. WFC, founded by anti-Castro Cuban Guillermo Hernandez-Cartaya, was, in the 1960s and 70s, the financial institution most favored by narcotics traffickers with CIA connections.
I hope the reader will forgive a lapse into self-quotation:

If, as I suspect, Wilkes joined forces with WFC in the mid-1970 s, he may have played a role in the creation of a spin-off called the Dominican Mortgage Corporation, which shared the same address as WFC's Coral Gables HQ. This group heavily invested in Vegas - casinos, real estate development, even a detective agency.

https://cannonfire.blogspot.com/2006/09/tale-of-drugs-and-spooks.html the story of a man who didn't board a jet.
John "Sparky" McLaughlin tried to take his family on vacation last July, only to discover that that an unknown agency had placed him on the terrorist "no-fly" list. This came as quite a surprise to McLaughlin: He's a cop. In fact, he once headed an effective anti-narcotics unit in Philadelphia.
Too effective. His 90s-era investigations of a drug ring run by citizens of the Dominican Republic brought him into conflict with no less a body than the CIA. His work was disparaged, smearedshut down. He fought for years to counter the allegations, eventually winning his day in court, along with a $1.5 million dollar judgment (now on appeal). Although his name was cleared, its appearance on a "no-fly" list suggests that "anti-terrorist" measures are being used to persecute a whistleblower.
All the evidence indicates that McLaughlin is a good cop who has made some powerful enemies. To get the full story, check out the lengthy investigations by the Philadelphia City Paper,
here and here, as well as the terrific follow-up piece by Bill Conroy over at NarcoNews. I suggest printing out every page and savoring the details over lunch. You won't find a more fascinating or frustrating true crime tale.

The question of governmental foreknowledge of 9/11 can be demonstrated to a reasonable probability solely by our preparations in advance of the Afghanistan war, supported by the history of synthetic terrorism perpetrated by the western alliance powers in the GLADIO program 'terror' attacks (which see)the long history of propagandized pretexts for this country's going to war.
On the record that anyone has paid attention to, the US apparently went from a dead standstill to invading a country across the world in not much more than one monthmaybe less.
What goes unmentioned in much of the 9/11 skeptic commentary is that US officials briefed Japanese and Indian officials

in mid-2001 that the US planned a military overthrow of the Afghan government with a coalition of countries, with hostilities to commence 'by early October,' just as would eventually take place.
Moreover, on

10.Sep.2001 -large joint US/British army and naval forces in Operation BrightStar were pre-staged around Afghanistan.

The naval armada was the largest ever such joint US/British 'exercise,' and on 9/10, after steaming for a considerable time in advance, those ships dropped anchor in the international waters closest to Afghanistan.

Some 45,000 troops were moved closer to the Afghan theater of operations that day as well, to Oman, iirc.

And coincidentally, of course, on

10.Sep.2001 Condaleeza Rice had a fully developed war plan against Afghanistan on Bush's desk just awaiting his signature and formal approval.
The plan required extensive landing rights be acquired in the 'Stan' countries around Afghanistan, but luckily, those had already been negotiated.

More, we had already pre-based US troops in those countriesalso substantially created the infrastructure required, including prior construction of the lengthy runways required for heavy transport planes, etc.
The Indian government, aided by Israel, discovered that $100,000 had been ordered wired to Mohammed Atta from a cell phone whose number belonged to the head of ISI, Pakistan's CIA equivalent.

This man spent two weeks in the US right through and past

11.Sep.2001, briefing every high level official, including the Congressional chairs of the intel committee, Richard Armitage, C. Rice, Dick Cheney, etc.

After the FBI attested to the evidence brought forward against the head of the ISI, he was allowed to resign unmolested and unquestioned ('to spend more time with his family'?). # posted by Anonymous : 9:47 AM

00.Feb.2002-00.Dec.2002 -from-to-Senator Bob Graham, Head of the Joint Congressional 911 Inquiry,-Consider what had to say-

00.Dec.2002 - when he was interviewed on the PBS Lehrer Hour-
"I was surprised at the evidence that there were foreign governments involved in facilitating the activities of at least some of the terrorists in the USA....

I think there is very compelling evidence that at least some of the terrorists were assisted not just in financing - although that was part of it - by a sovereign foreign government ...

It will become public at some point when it's turned over to the archives, but that's 20 or 30 years from now." (link)(link)
That sounds to me like something far more complex than 19 terrorists guided by someone living in a cave in Pakistan.

And they're not my words, they're Sen.Graham's, a man who saw the evidence.
Impeach this criminal Bush on about ten counts and reopen the 9/11 Commission with new investigators who are told to hide nothing, protect no-one.

Ohtake all evidence under oath with the death penalty for perjury.

Then see if we can get some goddamned answers. # posted by kenj : 2:49 PM
