27.Aug.2006 https://education.guardian.co.uk/print/0,,329562293-111765,00.html Libet's experiments suggested that our brain makes up its mind long (in neurobiological terms) before we become aware of any conscious intention to act. Consciousness seems to be a mere bystander with just an illusion of control. Where does this leave free will or personal responsibility? Dijksterhuis points out that consciousness is good at following precise rules - arithmetic, solving anagrams, etc - but has only limited capacity for handling more complex problems. He proposes the "deliberation without attention" hypothesis, whereby complex problems are best solved by the parallel-computing capabilities of the unconscious mind. So bear this in mind the next time you need to choose between the flat-pack wardrobe + the futon: trust your instincts. It was first discovered in 2002, but according to the Christian Science Monitor, researchers at Oregon State University (OSU) have taken a close-up look into this coastal dead zone. And things are getting worse. A few weeks ago, the researchers measured the level of dissolved oxygen in this part of the ocean. They found that levels were 10 to 30 times lower than normal, down to 0.5 milliliters per liter, a characteristic of hypoxia. And because they have no explanations about this phenomenon, they're even envisioning a total absence of oxygen, or anoxia. Read more for additional details and pictures about this mystery." 27.Aug.2006 Climate Changes Shift Springtime in Europe - Zonk 117 - gollum123 writes to mention a BBC article on a study of Europe's changing climate. The study collated information from 17 nations + 125,000 studies involving 561 species. The results indicate that, at least in Europe, 'Spring' is coming earlier and earlier every year. From the article: "Spring was beginning on average six to eight days earlier than it did 30 years ago, the researchers said. In regions such as Spain, which saw the greatest increases in temperatures, the season began up to two weeks earlier. The findings were based on what was described as the world's largest study of changes in recurring natural events, such as when plants flowered. He’s mastered sitting up + now he’s trying to figure out moving around on the ground. I’ve realized something pertinent to careers this morning based on this experience + thought I’d share it. (You didn’t think this was suddenly Parent Hacks, did you?) Stretch Goals Matter Harold was trying to reach a toy just a hair out of his reach. I almost leaned over and handed it to him, but then I realized the moment: he had a shot at achieving something. It’d take some work + he’d really have to be uncomfortable and unfulfilled until he got the job done, but the end product would be achievement. Accomplishment. What good would handing the block to him be? He’d be satisfied, but not fulfilled. It’s the difference between a lunch of potato chips versus a lunch with a salad and sandwich and water. Both fill the belly, but one adds value. But Don’t Stretch Too Far Now, had I come over and pulled the block 12 feet away, Harold would recognize right away that he wouldn’t be able to get the block. At least not at his current level. Instead, he’d be frustrated, sad + probably start looking around for something new to do. 27.Aug.2006 The conscious mind isn't much use in making hard decisions EducationGuardian.co.uk | Research | Johnjoe McFadden: The conscious mind isn't much use in making hard decisions: " 26.Aug.2006 The Guardian Trust your instincts The evidence seems to be that the conscious mind isn't much use in making hard decisions - Johnjoe McFadden Do you really need that flat-pack wardrobe or would the foldaway futon be a better buy? Why not have lunch and think about it? Then you might need to choose between pickled herring or Swedish meatballs. Everywhere we are confronted with difficult choices. In Luke Rhinehart's novel The Dice Man, the eponymous hero makes all his decisions by rolling a dice. Few of us would trust to a life ruled by chance, so we tend to think carefully about the complex decisions (the wardrobe or the futon) but are content to trust our instincts with the simpler things (meatballs or herring). State Department officials Armitage, Powell + William Howard Taft IV, the State Department's legal adviser did not reveal the information, which was, according to Isikoff, that "rarest of Washington phenomena: a hot secret that never leaked." Earlier this week it was revealed that Armitage may have also told Bob Woodward about Plame's identity. It was previously established that Karl Rove had confirmed to Novak that "Wilson's wife" — the identity of which was just a Who's Who entry away — worked at the CIA + also revealed that information to Time 's Matt Cooper ; separately, I. Still, these related matters are finally getting some much-needed attention. Many thanks to Steven D for his genuinely fair and balanced Daily Kos diary entry. One of his readers offered a comment which I consider of worthy of special note: i have a greek friend... that i chat with on IM. he's pretty well connected in military matters over there. i discuss world events with him to get a perspective on things. i asked him about the greek guy who was involved in this mess + he shut up fast and emphatically refused to discuss this at all. the only time he ever ahut up and said change the subject like that before was when i mentioned the israeli/south africa joint nuclear test in the south indian ocean. hmm. The most interesting new claims in the Costas Tsalikidis case come to us by way of Wikipedia. I have no idea who wrote this and cannot judge the veracity. As always, caveat lector : The most recent reports are of a 'mystery man' who has allegedly been providing information about the circumstances surrounding the death who had met with the family’s lawyer and insisted that the technician had been murdered. Themistoklis Sofos (the lawyer) said he met with the man, who has still not been identified, at a remote spot on the outskirts of Attica. All that is known about the informant is that he is not a Vodafone employee. He told Sofos that Tsalikidis was murdered to prevent him from talking about the spy software he discovered in Vodafone’s system. The man named the alleged killers, some of whom had links to the mobile phone firm, he claimed. Sofos said he asked for evidence to back up this claim and was told by the informant that he would get it in 10 days. (To read the rest, click "Permalink" below) This page is devoted to the Costas Tsalikidis case. These sample entries from the timeline deserve to be noted: February 3, 2006 The press widely believes that the wire tapping case is related to the suicide of Mr. Tsalikidis. This is first page news in all the press and mass media of the country for the next two weeks. Countless news programs are assuming that the suicide of Mr. Tsalikidis may not have been a suicide. 08.Feb.2006 The investigation of Mr. Tsalikidis’ death is handed over to the highly experienced Prosecutor, Mr. Diotis. For the first time in a year since the death of Mr. Tsalikidis an investigation of his apartment is conducted. The results have not been made public yet. No search for an entire year ? Someone must have fed a 12-months' supply of Unisom to the Greek cops. Or perhaps Hypnos, Greek god of sleep, has been interfering with police procedure again. We should also take note of these words from the family's lawyer: According to his brother, Panagiotis, Costas submitted his resignation to Vodafone Senior Engineering Manager, Nikos Plevris, 20 days before his death. The resignation was strongly rejected by Vodafone + he continued to go to work until his death. It was also confirmed that a stormy meeting had taken place at the company the day before his death. He had also expressed great concerns to his fiancée over something wrong going on at the company. He did not mention the bugging or any illegal activity, but he said something very wrong was happening and that if it became public it would create havoc. He had also said to his fiancée the last days before his death, that his departure from the company was a matter of life and death. Please do what you can to draw attention to what should be a huge story. Remember, the spying targets were politicians and military figures, not terrorists. If properly exposed, the Greek and Italian telecom scandals could demonstrate, once and for all, that anti-terrorism serves as an excuse for truly Orwellian offenses. 26.Aug.2006 "Bush on the Couch" is Back + Not a Moment Too Soon! This time the neoclowns want to attack Iran, because attacking Iraq went so well. Newt Gingrich had a gargantuanly stupid quote in the article, which we'll get to in a second. But first let me start with my favorite quote by a "senior USA official," otherwise known as a neoclown inside the Vice President's office. He is referring to the intelligence agencies who have found no evidence of an Iranian nuclear program: "We're not in a court of law," he said. "When they say there is 'no evidence,' you have to ask them what they mean, what is the meaning of the term 'evidence'?" Aren't these the same guys that were all over Clinton for asking what "is" is? Read the above sentence again. First, he admits that there is no evidence. Then, his best defense is to question what the word "evidence" means. That's embarrassing. This is a person in a position of power inside our government. Gee, I wonder how the intelligence got manipulated in the lead up to the Iraq War. If you'd like a refresher course, just watch how they're doing it right now with Iran. Here's my second favorite quote from the article: "The consensus of the intelligence agencies is that Iran is still years away from building a nuclear weapon. Such an assessment angers some in Washington." Isn't it a good thing that they are years away from a nuclear weapon? Wouldn't it give us more time to figure out how to stop them? Not if you're a neoclown. This means war might be delayed. They must have war and they must have it right now . War, war, war. Now, we come to our old friend Newt Gingrich, who has stopped cheating on his wives long enough to make this absolutely asinine statement: "When the intelligence community says Iran is 5 to 10 years away from a nuclear weapon, I ask: 'If North Korea were to ship them a nuke tomorrow, how close would they be then?" Not as close as North Korea. Let me ask a very simple question: If North Korea already has the weapons and they are also in the axis of evil, why aren't we attacking them? Why are the neoclowns trying to attack a country that might buy it from the North Koreans when they could just attack North Korea, who they haven't paid a lick of attention to in six years? The answer is 100% undeniable - because it isn't about the weapons. That's just a convenient excuse used to scare the American people. Iraq didn't have any weapons and we're still in there three and half years later. It was never about the weapons. One of the main neoclown architects, Paul Wolfowitz, pretty much admitted it after the Iraq War started. Now, they're shamelessly bringing that old dead horse out again. Other quick points about Gingrich's buffoonish point: 1. Isn't he admitting that Iran doesn't have any weapons and would have to buy them from North Korea? What would prevent them from buying those weapons the day after our air strikes? 3. In fact, wouldn't they have a far greater incentive to buy nuclear weapons if we attacked them? Especially because they would have learned that their current weapons were not enough of a deterrent and North Korea's nuclear weapons were. You see, I don't think Gingrich is actually this dumb. But I do think he believes you are. He thinks he can sell any bag of goods to the US population because he is so much smarter than everyone else. Like when he so cleverly divorced his wife as she was lying in a hospital bed with cancer. Man, that was crafty. Look, I don't have a problem with neoclowns making these arguments. It's a free country. If you want to put on a shiny red nose and big floppy shoes and make clowning your calling in life, more power to you. What I don't get is why we're still going to the circus. Haven't we had enough of this freak show? These guys should be the laughing stock of the country right now. And here is all of Washington taking them very seriously to this day and having a legitimate discussion about whether we should attack another Middle Eastern country that did not attack us and has no weapons . How many times do we have to point out how absolutely insane that is before the people in power (politicians and the press) get it? It shouldn't that difficult. Anyone who backs this war drive will look back and regret it forever. Anyone who still wants to get in the car these neoclowns are driving is going to be eternally embarrassed. You're going to think - what was I thinking? Consider this a preemptive intervention. Get out of the clown car and slowly back away. There is still time for you to pretend you were on to them the whole time. Appearing on Fox, Cohen said “something has to be done to put us on a war footing mentality,” as obviously the spate of fake color-coded terror alerts, revealed to be nothing more than crass political monkeywrenching + the parade of duped patsies in Miami + Ontario + London, to name but the most recent, have not frightened the populace to the degree required. In order to get the people in the appropriate mindset, Cohen believes we need “national service,” that is to say he is in favor of mandatory servitude, otherwise known as slavery + he describes this national serfhood as “helping out at homes, health care, nurses, etc.,” when in fact the state—or, more specifically, the multinational corporations + banksters who run the state—could care less about such things. In essence, this is a foot in the door for a military draft, as millions of soldiers, or pawns, need to be thrown on toxic + depleted uranium battlegrounds for the next generation or two. In a truly sane + just world, William Cohen would be doing the perp walk in an orange jumpsuit. As the the International War Crimes Tribunal notes, Cohen is guilty of slaughtering innocents in Yugoslavia. 24.Mar.1999 corporate gangster don Bill Clinton ordered the Pentagon + NATO to attack the people of Yugoslavia, not only a war crime + a crime against humanity, but also a violation of Article 2 of the USA Constitution USC 1542, mandating initial + regular consultations with Congress; 50 USC 1543, mandating written reports of necessitating circumstances; + 50 USC 1544 mandating the termination of the war use of USA Armed Force after 60 days in the absence of the official enactment by Congress of specific statutory authority). Specifically, Clinton + his minions stand accused of the following crimes: bombing homes, residential areas, bridges, historical sites, churches, passenger buses, embassies, hospitals, prisons, sanatoriums + even a zoo. “ A group lawyers from several countries has laid a formal complaint with the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia against all of the individual leaders of the NATO countries + officials of NATO itself,” 07.May 1999 -dated- Michael Mandel, a member of the Osgoode Hall Law School, wrote in a press release-. The complaint was initiated by professors from Osgoode Hall Law School of York University in Toronto - where Tribunal prosecutor Louise Arbour was also a professor before becoming a judge. The group has charged Bill Clinton + Madeleine Albright + Javier Solana + Jamie Shea + Jean Chretien + Art Eggleton + Lloyd Axworthy + 60 other heads of state + government + foreign ministers + defense ministers + NATO officials, with war crimes committed in NATOs six-week old bombing campaign against Yugoslavia. The list of crimes includes “willful killing, willfully causing great suffering or serious injury to body or health, extensive destruction of property, not justified by military necessity + carried out unlawfully + wantonly, employment of poisonous weapons or other weapons to cause unnecessary suffering, wanton destruction of cities, towns or villages, or devastation not justified by military necessity, attack, or bombardment, by whatever means, of undefended towns, villages, dwellings, or buildings, destruction or willful damage done to institutions dedicated to religion, charity and education, the arts and sciences, historic monuments + works of art + science.” The complaint also alleges “open violation” of the United Nations Charter, the NATO treaty itself, the Geneva Conventions + the Principles of International Law Recognized by the Nürnberg Tribunal (the latter of which makes “planning, preparation, initiation or waging of a war of aggression or a war in violation of international treaties, agreements or assurances” a crime). Instead of facing formal charges for such egregious crimes, Clinton is allowed to walk free, recently visiting Shea Stadium during a baseball game where he basked in the adoration of the celebrity hungry crowd. 00.000.1936 -during the the Berlin Olympics -Hitler did likewise. Of course, a few short years later, the German people paid a heavy price for their unquestioning devotion + fawning worship. It still remains to be seen if the American people will one day be called to pay for the vulgar crimes of their rulers. Instead of focusing on William Cohen’s unabashed call for war servitude + sacrifice in the name of our corporate rulers, the media concentrates on his latest novel, a fictional account of state power unbound going up against “terrorist attacks, a possible alliance among Russia, Germany and China, right-wing militias in the U.S. + more,” according to a frothy review posted on the MSNBC website. Of course, there are few “right-wing militias” in the USA, although plenty of folks are worried about the systematic destruction of the Constitution (these folks are considered dangerous “right-wing nuts”) + most terrorism is state-sponsored, but never mind, this is, after all, a work of fiction + wildly speculative fiction at best. In fact, reality, under the reign of our corporate fascist rulers, is far more scary than any horror novel, as the future portends, under Cohen’s bleak vision, shared by our decadent and indeed sociopathic rulers + their sycophants, hegemonic and endless war in the name of a corporate + thus fascist, Oceania. It is entirely natural for Cohen + his ilk to expect—nay, demand—our subservience to a predatory Novus Ordo Mundi, window dressed as selfless volunteer work for the sake of “homes, health care, nurses,” when in fact it is nothing less than the naked, blood-streaked face of the oligarchy engaged in the dance of the vultures. 26.Aug.2006 Learning to Love a Cable Guy Phone and cable companies are trying harder to please customers because they risk losing them forever if they do not keep them happy. 26.Aug.2006 Leading Iraq archaeologist flees A leading archaeologist flees Iraq, reportedly saying poor security and political pressures forced him out. 26.Aug.2006 Engineers Doubt Big Easy Levees After nearly a year of work on the levee system in the Crescent City, the commander of the Army Corps of Engineers admits it's likely not up to holding against a big one. 26.Aug.2006 IPod Factories: No Unions Apple's investigation of its Chinese iPod factories isn't a whitewash, but the most important issue isn't even mentioned: the ability of workers to organize. 26.Aug.2006 Oak Ridge Lab Supercomputer Doubles Performance - CowboyNeal 59 - "The most powerful supercomputer available for general scientific research in the USA has undergone an upgrade that's doubled its peak performance. But scientists warn that today's global warming means that it could be happening again. The ancient hot spell, which lasted 50,000 to 100,000 years, goes by the unwieldy name of Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum. It was caused by a sudden - in geological terms - doubling or tripling of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Climate scientists say the result was a massive increase of 10 to 12 degrees Fahrenheit - even higher near the poles - above the prevailing temperature. "In certain regards, the PETM is very similar to what is happening right now," said Gerald Dickens, an earth scientist at Rice University in Houston. "Just like now, a huge amount of carbon rapidly entered the ocean or atmosphere. The most notable difference is the rate. Things are happening much faster now than during the PETM." Most scientists attribute much of today's global warming to the burning of carbon-rich fossil fuels in factories, cars and trucks. If the present trend continues, Dickens said, the world will add as much carbon to the atmosphere in 500 years - from 1800 to 2300 - as the PETM did over 10,000 years. The long-ago heat wave "shows without a doubt that if you pump a bunch of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, the planet warms," Matthew Huber, an earth scientist at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., wrote in the June 1 edition of the journal Nature. Scientists realized the speed and extent of the prehistoric carbon explosion only recently. 26.Aug.2006 Global warming may be an accelerated version of ancient heat wave It was one of the greatest calamities of all time: Something turned up the Earth's thermostat, touching off a monstrous heat wave that killed many animals and drove others far from their homes to seek cooler climes. This catastrophe occurred 55 million years ago, after the age of the dinosaurs and long before humans appeared. But scientists warn that today's global warming means that it could be happening again. Have a great weekend! posted by Prof. Hex 26.Aug.2006 https://cannonfire.blogspot.com/2006/08/how-they-arranged-californian-election.html We’re clearly at the point where members of the ruling party are making up rules post hoc to justify whatever actions they wish to take. We are also at a point where there is little if any opposition to this. The House is silent. With the exception of local and national voting rights activists and Chairman Dean, the opposing party is silent. The Defendants literally argue that the Courts are powerless to stop them (without jurisdiction). Friday will reveal whether the courts are powerless to stop this abuse of power and premature termination of elections. Will Judge Yuri Hoffman carry on the emerging tradition of silence, or will he take us back to the courage and integrity shown by Judge John Sirica, a Republican appointee, who made history by demanding the truth from the Watergate burglars? # posted by Joseph : 5:01 PM 26.Aug.2006 https://cannonfire.blogspot.com/2006/08/how-they-arranged-californian-election.html The following is form the filing yesterday: Clearly, the swift swearing in did not end the election in the 50th Congressional District + it did not render everything, including the certification of results weeks later, nugatory and without “jurisdiction.” If this swearing in had this effect, then in the course of dismissing this case the Court would be bound to conclude that the certification of the results after the swearing in of Bilbray was without force and effect, without jurisdiction + in contravention of principles of federalism, as Defendants argue. That conclusion, however, requires either an absurdity, or the conclusion that our Congressional election was canceled by decision of the Speaker of the House, before all the votes were fully counted + well before certification. Document available here. So there you have it. Dennis Hastert, Speaker of the United House of Representatives, called “the peoples’ House,” now has the authority to nullify elections simply by swearing in candidates and claiming federal privilege based on one narrow section of the constitution, while completing ignoring the others, including the one stating that members of the House shall be elected every two years “by the People,” and not selected in Washington DC. Once again, the country is faced with a Bush v. Gore style selection manufactured in Washington DC + if only the people did not know which party benefited and which party was hurt by the selection, the country would be unanimous in denouncing this power grab. 26.Aug.2006 https://cannonfire.blogspot.com/2006/08/how-they-arranged-californian-election.html In a filling in San Diego Municipal Court yesterday, attorney Paul Lehto outlined the core in stark terms: Defendants are in effect arguing for the remarkable proposition that unilateral self-serving actions by a majority party in the House of Representatives to shuttle in a member of the same party can be effective, even if those actions do violence to and amount to circumvention of other sections of the US Constitution as well as the California constitution. Document available here. 26.Aug.2006 https://cannonfire.blogspot.com/2006/08/how-they-arranged-californian-election.html link to Scoop Independent Media. 26.Aug.2006 https://www.cannonfire.blogspot.com/ 30.Jun.2006 -On or about- -17 days after Bilbray was sworn in as a member of the House, Mikel Haas, Registrar of San Diego County, officially completed the audit of election results required for certification + officially certified the election of Bilbray over Busby based on 163,931 votes cast, of which 2,053 votes were said to be cast on Diebold TSX touchscreens + the remainder scanned via Diebold Accuvote OS computers. 31.Jul.2006 the Contestants filed an election contest, seeking a hand recount and to invalidate the election on several grounds, not only including the affirmative evidence of irregular results, but also including the stonewalling of citizen information requests and the pricing of recounts at an estimated $150,000 that made it difficult or impossible for any citizen to tell who won the election. 22.Aug.2006 the defendants moved to dismiss, arguing that the swearing in of Bilbray deprives everyone else of jurisdiction including specifically the San Diego Superior Court because Art. I, sec. 5 of the US Constitution has been held to mean that the House + Senate are the judges of the Qualifications of their Members, one of those qualifications is supposed to be “election.” There is some thing very wrong with this sequence. Elections are not complete, anywhere, until they are officially certified by local authorities. How can a citizen get sworn in as a member of the House of Representatives before his or her election is certified? Only Speaker Dennis Hastert, his team + Bilbray have the answer. In a filling in San Diego Municipal Court yesterday, attorney Paul Lehto outlined the core in stark terms: Defendants are in effect arguing for the remarkable proposition that unilateral self-serving actions by a majority party in the House of Representatives to shuttle in a member of the same party can be effective, even if those actions do violence to + amount to circumvention of other sections of the US Constitution as well as the California constitution. (Document available here). Lehto is one of the two attorneys representing citizens who are challenging the election. Shortly after the last vote was cast, citizens discovered disturbing facts. Prior to Election Day, several poll workers had taken home voting machines for periods of a day to a week at a time without supervision or even consistent tracking procedures. Other irregularities like vote switching on touch screen machines emerged. Brad Friedman of www.BradBlog.com conducted an extensive investigation that uncovered a series of sloppy procedures by County Registrar Haas. The election became an immediate cause for citizens, supporters of the losing candidate + national voting rights activists. The results were also challenged by Howard Dean, Chairman of the Democratic National Committee. A suit was filed by two local citizens challenging the election. The initial filing relied on the right of citizens to know that their votes are and counted correctly in order to assure that the candidate designated as the winner is in fact the winner. Part of the suit is a request, denied to date, for a recount of the ballots cast on Election Day. In response to the suit, the County of San Diego filed a response questioning the authority of the local court to decide the case since (a) membership in the house was the province of the House of Representatives + (b) the speaker had already sworn in Bilbray. Lehto + Simpkins filed a withering response to this argument. They point out that elections are the province of local and state authorities for all elections including federal contests, unless otherwise specified in the constitution. The following is form the filing yesterday: Clearly, the swift swearing in did not end the election in the 50th Congressional District + it did not render everything, including the certification of results weeks later, nugatory and without “jurisdiction.” If this swearing in had this effect, then in the course of dismissing this case the Court would be bound to conclude that the certification of the results after the swearing in of Bilbray was without force + effect, without jurisdiction + in contravention of principles of federalism, as Defendants argue. That conclusion, however, requires either an absurdity, or the conclusion that our Congressional election was canceled by decision of the Speaker of the House, before all the votes were fully counted + well before certification. Document available here. So there you have it. Dennis Hastert, Speaker of the United House of Representatives, called “the peoples’ House,” now has the authority to nullify elections simply by swearing in candidates + claiming federal privilege based on one narrow section of the constitution, while completing ignoring the others, including the one stating that members of the House shall be elected every two years “by the People,” + not selected in Washington DC. Once again, the country is faced with a Bush v. Gore style selection manufactured in Washington DC + if only the people did not know which party benefited + which party was hurt by the selection, the country would be unanimous in denouncing this power grab. Ongoing support + interference by the House of Representatives or persons associated therewith continues in San Diego. Paul Vinovich, Counsel to the House Administration Committee, Chaired by Bob Ney, R, of Ohio, had a letter delivered to San Diego Superior Court presiding Judge Yuri Hoffman, with a number of arguments in favor of the Judge dismissing the case. This type of communication with members of the judiciary, particularly when another government authority is involved, is covered by strict rules. One such rule is that the ex parte communication be provided simultaneously to counsel for all involved. In his own hand, Vinovich says to plaintiff’s attorney Lehto, “Letter delivered to court last evening.” Lehto received the fax at 8:56 a.m. Thursday morning, many hours after the letter was admittedly provided to the judge by Vinovich. In the letter, Vinovich admits the time sequence of a 13.Jul.2006 swearing in followed by a 29.Jul.2006 certification of the election and then, through circular reasoning, tries to use the certification as justification for the swearing in ceremony. He fails to note that Speaker Hastert would have needed psychic powers on 13.Jun.2006 to know that the swearing in of Bilbray would be justified by a 29.Jun.2006 certification. We’re clearly at the point where members of the ruling party are making up rules post hoc to justify whatever actions they wish to take. We are also at a point where there is little if any opposition to this. The House is silent. With the exception of local + national voting rights activists + Chairman Dean, the opposing party is silent. The Defendants literally argue that the Courts are powerless to stop them (without jurisdiction). Friday will reveal whether the courts are powerless to stop this abuse of power + premature termination of elections. Will Judge Yuri Hoffman carry on the emerging tradition of silence, or will he take us back to the courage + integrity shown by Judge John Sirica, a Republican appointee, who made history by demanding the truth from the Watergate burglars? (Heck, today it's been 60 degrees all day and rainy, with the same forecasted through the weekend. This is also New England!) But we have yet to slide past the Katrina anniversary, much less the end of the hurricane season, though it has been relatively quiet compared to last year. And then I am forced to consider the heat wave in Europe just three years ago when at least 35,000 died. Still, we have the temerity to complain. But we should have the foresight to see the trends, if not the future + the determination to correct our course. I fear, though, that just like everywhere else, from medicine and education to the economy and politics in general, the solution will only look like a band-aid + not anything like a real cure. That will require a real acknowledgement of the nature and depth of this disease, this authoritarian slavemaster epidemic that threatens to destroy us all. Perhaps our greatest hope can be found in those who have suffered most, the Southern blacks, at least those who are able to recognize the symptoms and steer toward higher principles. The South has many like Cynthia McKinney to offer as antedote, but just as many too who will only feed the sickness. Methinks this recovery - if we can even hope for it - will require a revelation within each of us, a moment of recognition that we each suffer from + participate in the problem + so must learn to huddle together, despite the heat, because we are all in this together. But we cannot afford to wait for more Katrinas or heatwaves or slavemaster corruption and destruction to wake us from this sultry Southern sleep. The affliction consumes us with every bite of trucked-in Georgia peach + with every breath of compressed cool air. We are dying in our desperate attempts, not just to live, but - so foolishly, so selfishly - to live without discomfort.# posted by Joseph 26.Aug.2006 https://www.spiegel.de/panorama/0,1518,druck-433687,00.html Auf einem US-Airways-Flug von Philadelphia nach Bradley in Connecticut fanden Crewmitglieder auf einem leeren Sitz ein Taschenmesser. 26.Aug.2006 Alarm auf US- Flug: Student ging mit Dynamit an Bord 26.Aug.2006 "Katrina"- Folgen: Die USA entdecken ihr grünes Gewissen 26.Aug.2006 Ousted Peruvian Spy Chief Linked To Drugs Montesinos made contact with Benjamin + Ramon Arrellano Felix, leaders of Mexico's powerful Tijuana Cartel, through ... www.mapinc.org/drugnews/v02/n1485/a09.html Ousted spy chief linked to drugs ...
