Big Oil Misleads on California Renewable Energy Initiative - Payson -

In a few months, Californians will vote on Proposition 87, a ballot initiative that aims to reduce gasoline usage by 25 % over 10 years.

Specifically, the initiative creates an alternative energy fund by making oil companies pay extraction fees for drilling in California, much like they do in Louisiana, Alaska + Texas.

Not surprisingly, the oil industry-funded opposition campaign is misleading the public about its impact:

Raising the cost of California oil will make companies more willing to import foreign oil into the state, which could raise pump prices, said Al Lundeen, a spokesman for the anti-Prop. 87 forces.

We think it will very clearly impact consumers,'’ he said.

The initiative also would create a new state bureaucracy to administer the tax money, he said + while California is one of few oil-producing states without an oil severance tax like this one, the other taxes it charges oil producers more than make up for that .

The facts show otherwise:

1. Prop 87 would not increase gas prices. “Since the tax would decline as the price of oil fell, it would not hurt production or affect gasoline prices, said Severin Borenstein, director of the University of California Energy Institute. ‘No one will shut down a well because of this,’ Borenstein said, adding that at most, it will discourage new oil-production projects. ‘I have seen no evidence this incremental loss in profit (for the oil companies) is significant.’”

2) Prop 87 would not create a new level of bureaucracy. Section 6(b) of the initiative reorganizes and strengthens a current state board called the California Alternative and Advanced Transportation Financing Authority. The amendment will rename the board the California Energy Alternatives Program Authority + expand the board from 4 to 9 members to include experts on energy markets, alternative energy, consumer advocacy + public health.

3) Oil companies do not pay their fair share to the state of California. “Borenstein said the tax is not that high, noting that other states already have higher taxes on oil production, including Texas. California oil producers currently pay a severance fee, which is significantly lower than in other states, Borenstein added.”
10.Aug.2006 Right-Wing Radio Host: Jews Who Criticize Israel Hate Themselves - Amanda - Yesterday on Fox News’s Your World With Neil Cavuto, right-wing talk show host Dennis Prager explained that the reason Jews criticize Israel is because they are plagued by “self-hate” from being “hurt by so many anti-Semites.” They believe, “if I take the side of those who wish to kill us, I won’t be hurt.” Watch it: Oy vey. Digg it!

Full transcript below:

CAVUTO: As someone who is Jewish, very quickly Dennis, could you explain to me why many in the Jewish community bash Israel to the extent they do?

PRAGER: Oh, I can, but you need to give me a few more minutes. I’m good at sound bites, I really mastered this ability. But well, let me just say this way. This is a problem in Jewish history known as self-hate. Where Jews have been hurt so much — holocausts, pogroms, inquisitions — Jews have been so hurt by so many anti-Semites, that it has played havoc with the Jewish psyche. And there are those who believe — not necessarily even consciously — if I take the side of those who wish to kill us, I won’t be hurt.
Focus On The Family Misrepresents Women’s Views On Embryonic Stem Cell Research - Amanda -

In recent weeks, Focus on the Family has mailed brochures to more than 90,000 Missouri homes, arguing that stem cell research under the Missouri ballot initiative would exploit women by luring them into dangerous egg donations. The brochure, “Women’s voices against cloning,” quotes several women’s organizations to show “the risks that this measure [Missouri ballot initiative] poses to women’s health.”

Women’s organizations quoted in the brochure tell ThinkProgress that Focus on the Family has misrepresented their positions and that they actually oppose the organization’s aims to ban stem cell research .

Judy Norsigian, author of Our Bodies, Ourselves, said that while she has some concerns about the somatic cell nuclear transplant (SCNT) technique, she is actually “very supportive of most embryonic stem cell research.” She also said Focus on the Family was “obfuscating [her] language” to support its own political purposes.

Focus on the Family also quoted Sujatha Jesudason from the Center for Genetics and Society. We spoke to Emily Galpern from that same organization, who also said that her organization supports some stem cell research. “One of our concerns is that conservative folks are co-opting feminist language to suit their cause,” Galpern told the St. Louis Dispatch. Galpern told ThinkProgress that groups like Focus on the Family are “taking women’s health advocates language for their larger goal of trying to stop embryonic stem cell research.”
10.Aug.2006 Tony Snow: A Vote For Lamont Is A Vote For Another 9/11 - Think Progress -

At a press briefing moments ago, Tony Snow claimed that last night’s Connecticut Senate primary gave voters the chance to answer the question, “Do you take the war on terror seriously?” Snow said that Connecticut voters who backed Ned Lamont (and the 57 % of Americans who support his position on Iraq) were choosing to “ignore the difficulties and walk away.” That is the same approach, he said, that led Osama bin Laden to the conclusion “that Americans were weak and wouldn’t stay the course and that led to 11.Sep.2001.” Watch it: Digg It! Full transcript:

Take a look at the blogs today, they’re pretty hot. And the real question for the American people to ask themselves is, do you take the war on terror seriously? With all the developments around the world — and, if so, how do you fight it to win? There seems to be two approaches + in the Connecticut race, one of the approaches is ignore the difficulties + walk away.

Now, when the USA walked away, in the opinion of the Osama bin Laden

00.000.1991 bin Laden drew from that the conclusion that Americans were weak + wouldn’t stay the course + that led to 11.Sep.2001.

It is important to realize that terrorists are not simply inspired by American engagement in the world, but they have their own agenda + it is an agenda that if we turn around + look the other way, they’re not going to ignore. They will continue to build strength and they will continue to build adherence and it is a vitally important debate to have.

And it’s really up to Democratic candidates and the Democratic Party to figure out how they want to stand in the war on terror. Do they want to have the sort of time-table approach, leave by a date certain?

Do they not want to have something constructive to say about gathering threats from Iran and elsewhere?

Or do they want to acknowledge the fact that in a dangerous world it takes commitment, it takes persistence? Throughout American history, generation through generation has been faced with difficulties + each generation has risen to the challenge and we’re confident this generation will do the same.
Fox Military Analyst on Syria: ‘We Can Talk To Them When We Line Them Up and Kill Them’ - Guest -

With the Bush administration refusing to hold direct talks with Syria, Col. David Hunt, military analyst for Fox News, appeared on Hannity & Colmes last night to offer some advice to the president: “I think we can talk to them when we line them up and kill them.” Stating that “the only reason to talk to some of these guys is to just do that,” Hunt went on to argue that America should “absolutely, 100 %” seek regime change in both Syria and Iran if they’re “not going to cooperate.” Watch it:

Strangely, after his tirade, Hunt acknowledged that in some cases, “we have to directly talk to these guys to find out what they want.” – Scott Keyes Full transcript:

HANNITY: How naive is this notion — the New York Times editorial today — that the idea that we can talk to Syria, talk to these terrorist regimes. Can you talk to Ahmadinejad? Can you talk to an Assad? Can you talk to Usama bin Laden? Can you get anywhere? Is that an…

HUNT: I think we can talk to them when we line them up and kill them. I don’t think — the only reason to talk to some of these guys is to just do that. However, we’re not going to wipe out, as we talked offline, the entire country, but we have to directly talk to these guys to find out what they want. If they’re not going to cooperate, yes, they have to go.

HANNITY: Regime change.

HUNT: Absolutely, 100 %.
Rove reaches out to Lieberman: ‘The boss wants to help.’ - Nico - ABC’s George Stephanopoulos reports, “According to a close Lieberman adviser, the President’s political guru, Karl Rove, has reached out to the Lieberman camp with a message straight from the Oval Office: ‘The boss wants to help. Whatever we can do, we will do.’”

10.Aug.2006 Increasing sectarian violence in Iraq - Payson - has led Shiite leaders to push a “radical plan to partition the country as a way of separating the warring sects.

Some Iraqis are even talking about dividing the capital, with the Tigris River as a kind of Berlin Wall.”
Industry-Backed - The ‘Vast Majority’ of Climatologists Don’t Believe In Global Warming - Judd - Bonner Cohen is a senior fellow at the National Center for Public Policy Research, where he is paid by the fossil fuel industry to distort the facts about global warming and other environmental issues. He works closely with Steve “Junkman” Milloy, who is one of the leading promoters of misinformation about global warming through his website,

Today, as a guest on C-SPAN’s National Journal, Bonner claimed that the “vast majority” of climatologists are “agnostic” on global warming. Bonner explained that meant they weren’t convinced “there is a causal relationship between emissions of greenhouse gases and [warming] the climate.” In the end, climatologists might conclude the impact of greenhouse gases is “the exact opposite.” Watch it:

This is completely false. Thousands of scientists — participating in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Changehave agreed that global warming is real and humans are responsible for much of it.

In the video above, a caller challenges Bonner to name climatologists who dispute that greenhouse gas emissions warm the climate. He fails to name a single one.

CALLER: I’ve been listening to your comments + I’m rather struck by some of your claims.

First of all, what I’m hearing is the typical loose logic that people use in arguing against global warming.

For example, climate change occurs naturally, therefore, it’s silly to think that we could somehow affect it, which is sort of like saying since cancer exists in nature,

it’s ridiculous to propose that cigarettes could also cause cancer. You know, it’s a typical non-sequitur. But I guess the thing that most struck me was your claim that there’s no consensus amongst climatologists.

I guess my question would be, what %age of climatologists do you think disagree with the concept of global warming and how many could you name?

BONNER: Yes. Most climatologists who look at this are saying, ‘we need to study the matter more. We need more data.

We know that human activities can, of course, affect the climate, but that other factors, the ones I pointed out earlier, can also be driving the climate.’

If you go to climate scientists, climatologists, the people who look at this, as opposed to the scientific community at large, you will find absolutely no consensus.

Some think that manmade emissions of greenhouse gases are warming the climate, others do not.

The vast majority of them are somewhat gnostic on the whole thing.

That is, that they think we simply need to look at more data.

We know what the theory of global warming is, but what you do in science is that you test the theory.

You don’t reach a conclusion one way or the other just based upon emotion.

It very well may be that after further research we find out that the manmade emotions of greenhouse gases are driving the climate, or we may find out the exact opposite, or

we may decide it’s something of all of the above, some mixture of all of the above.

But to assume, as some do, that there is a causal relationship between emissions of greenhouse gases and the climate—that is the theory of global warming—that is still up to scientific debate.
Plan B may soon be available over the counter. - Amanda -

After Bush administration political appointees interfered and blocked Plan B in 2003, the

Food and Drug Administration + Barr Laboratories “agreed yesterday on a plan that could lead within weeks to over-the-counter sales of the morning-after pill.”

60. The %age of Americans opposed to the war in Iraq, “the highest number since polling on the subject began with the commencement of the war 00.Mar.2003 .”

57 % supported a timetable for troop withdrawals from Iraq.

1,855. Number of bodies that showed up at the Baghdad morgue in July, “a 16 % rise from June and a 71 % increase from January.”

The United Nations has stopped deliveries of aid to southern Lebanese villages “because of the danger on the roads” and because the “last bridge over the Litani River north of Tyre had been blown up.”

The World Health Organization “warned that if fuel is not delivered soon, 60 % of the hospitals in Lebanon will ‘simply cease to function.’”

The Bush administration has drafted amendments to a U.S. war crimes law “passed in the mid-1990s that criminalized violations of the Geneva Conventions.”

The changes would mean interrogators would no longer face possible prosecution for committing “outrages upon [the] personal dignity” of prisoners.

The plan has “provoked concern at the International Committee of the Red Cross.”

The “ridiculous” trailer situation in Louisiana :

Nearly 1,200 St. Bernard Parish families are still waiting to get into trailers that sit locked on their home sites but need utilities or other services + 400 families waiting for trailers have none at all.”

The families say countless calls to FEMA have failed to help.”

The American Bar Association’s House of Delegates yesterday voted to say it “opposes, as contrary to the rule of law + our constitutional system of separation of powers, the misuse of presidential signing statements .”

The Energy Department is considering tapping America’s domestic oil reserves after BP’s announcement that it is shutting down its Alaska operations.

Bush’s restriction on federal stem cell research funding “has created a logistical nightmare for science .” “Researchers who study both federally approved + unapproved stem cells have had to buy duplicate equipment to conduct their experiments, then set up elaborate systems to keep their work completely separate.” The situation “puts U.S. researchers at a disadvantage.”

And finally: The residents of Wawayanda, NY have seen the Godfather one too many times . After voting against the town’s master zoning plan, Councilwoman Gail Soro found a horse’s head floating in her pool.

Speak, Memory
Walter A. Davis Today is the 61st anniversary of the dropping of an Atomic Bomb on the city of Hiroshima. The first act of global, state terrorism. (The second three days later on Nagasaki, the city with the largest Christian population in Japan.) Today a new kind of nuclear war is being fought-- as harbinger to the next kind of nuclear war, which will be fought tomorrow. The suppressed story about the Iraq War is the use by the U.S. of depleted uranium weaponry. The cut to the chase: the U.S. li! ttered Iraq with between 315 and 350 tons of depleted uranium during Operation Desert Storm. Five times as much was used during the 2003 invasion. Every shell shot from an Abrams tank contains 10 pounds of DU. The result: all of Iraq is now littered with radioactive dust from DU...

From Israel, To Lebanon
KABOBfest Many people have questioned our invasion tactics over the past four weeks. Sure, we've supposedly killed about 1,000 Lebanese civilians, but that number is inflated; really, we've only killed like 10 and Hizballah has been moving those same ten bodies from one bomb site to another in a refrigerated truck and parading them in front of the cameras. It's true, we've destroyed Lebanon's infrastructure, including power plants, roads, highways + - a couple days ago - the "sole human! itarian link" into the country. But you have to understand, we don't believe that Arabs are "humans," so they don't really need "humanitarian" aid. As John Bolton made clear, dead Lebanese are worth less than dead Israelis...

Israel?s Conspiracy Theories
KABOBfest Yesterday, after Hezbollah killed12 Israeli soldiers preparing to fight in Lebanon, Israeli Prime Minister Olmert met with fifty of his mouth pieces to inform them of the new talking points. In preparation for the widening of aggression against all of Lebanon, Hezbollah areas and not, they needed to get some new spin ready. "Our enemy is not Hezbollah, but Iran, which employs Hezbollah as its agent," Olmert told his spokepersons. Israel often constructs a mythical puppeteer,! far bigger than the opponent it is fighting, to either exaggerate its victories or minimize the meaning of its defeats...

Hijab? Must have.
Needlenose I vaguely remember watching some fluff-piece on CNN shortly after our invasion of Iraq about how the blossoming of democracy would somehow be good for women; blatantly preposterous even at the time, as Iraq was one of the mostly-Arabic countries where women could drive, work, walk around without a hijab and even serve in the government. Contrast with Riverbend's latest post:
"For me, June marked the first month I don?t dare leave the house without a hijab, or headscarf. I don?t wear a hijab usually, but it?s no longer possible to drive around Baghdad without one. It?s just not a good idea. (Take note that when I say 'drive? I actually mean 'sit in the back seat of the car?- I haven?t driven for the longest time.) Going around bare-headed in a car or in the street also puts the family members with you in danger. You risk hearing something you don?t want to hear and then the father or the brother or cousin or uncle can?t just sit by and let it happen. I haven?t driven for the longest time. If you?re a female, you risk being attacked."

The Clearing of South Lebanon
The Lebanese Nakba and Israeli Ambitions

00.000.1982 -after the departure of the PLO- Why did Israel remain in southern Lebanon ?

The publicly stated reason was to assure the security of its northern border by neutralizing the resistance forces and by maintaining a "buffer" zone. However, it is clear that the most secure period for northern Israel since 1978 and perhaps earlier has been the period from 2000 to the present, when it had no occupation forces in Lebanon ! except for the Shebaa farms. Many Lebanese and international observers suspect that the real purpose of Israel's leadership (as distinct from that of its population) was to seize and ultimately annex southern Lebanon up to the Litani river. If so, it is plausible to speculate that this may not have been the original intention, but rather evolved from the initial successes of Ariel Sharon, then commander of Israeli forces in Lebanon, in occupying the territory in question...

Palestinian refugee camp hit by Israeli gunboats
Xinhua Israeli gunboats shelled the largest Palestinian refugee camp of Ain Al Hilweh in Lebanon early Wednesday, causing casualties, official sources said. Mohammed Abbas Hamad, 28, a journalist for the Shiite-owned newspaper Al-Bayinnah Al-Jadida, was shot by gunmen at he left his home Monday in the Adil section of western Baghdad, police Lt. Mohammed Khayoun said. Late Monday, police found the bullet-riddled body of freelance journalist Ismail Amin Ali, 30, about a half mile from where he was abducted two weeks ago ! in northeast Baghdad, Lt. Ahmed Mohammed Ali said. The body showed sign of torture, he added. Ten people were killed and 69 wounded when two roadside bombs exploded in al-Shorja market in central Baghdad. Three separate roadside bomb attacks in Baghdad killed at least nine people. Two of the blasts targeted police + the third was aimed at one of Baghdad's busiest bus stations. Behind Bush?s ?truce? plan: the drive towards a wider Middle East war
Bill Van Auken US President George W. Bush on Monday declared his full support for a US-French United Nations resolution that dictates Israel?s terms to the Lebanese people while allowing the Israeli military to indefinitely continue its occupation and devastation of Lebanon. This document, far from an agreement for peace, represents one more step in widening the war initiated by the Bush administration in 2003 with the invasion of Iraq into a ! regional conflagration that poses an immense threat to working people not only in the Middle East, but in the US and all over the world...

Israel: we are the real victims here
Lenin's Tomb So, can anyone tell me, is Yedioth Ahronoth the Israeli version of The Sun or something? Only it's hard to find a more vulgar, brash, racist, propaganda sheet - yet it seems they have not fully calibrated for an external audience. Aside from the rather obvious front page and the news page in which today's top headline is "Ma'alot: Man moderately injured by rocket", they've got this wonderful news article in which Israeli politicians simply brag about their bullyin! g of Lebanon and Arab Israelis. Foreign Minister Livni's comments translated: 'Siniora better wipe away his tears and do as we say and stop telling everyone how terrible it is'. Knesset Speaker Itzik: 'You Arabs had better stop complaining + get behind the war effort or we'll treat you as traitors'. + of course there's the mantle of victimhood + I quote this in full...

A call to genocide.
Lenin's Tomb Haaretz may have spotted Israel's very own Thomas Friedman: Israel should have given Lebanon an ultimatum like this: "Until our abducted soldiers are returned and the rocket fire at our communities ends, we will destroy the communities of southern Lebanon via aerial bombardment, methodically going from south to north + we will begin within 24 hours."

In this way, we would not have endangered even one soldiers in battle ...

Religious Zeal and the Killing of the Lebanese
Abbas Ali When President Bush was asked (July 25) whether or not there was a contradiction in his position in allowing "Israel to kill people + civilians, in particular + . . . trying to aid the very people that have been suffering and killed as a result," the President?s answer was "No, I don't see a contradiction." It is this firm confidence that makes it easier for the President to resist the international call for an immediate ceasefire to save lives and in! itiate genuine measures of reconciliation. The Israelis have warmly welcomed the President? message and seem determined to annihilate the people in Southern Lebanese in the shortest possible time. This is strongly reflected in their actions and in the attitude of the Israeli army...

Brutal US attack on unarmed Afghans captured by photos
Tom Coghlan, The Independent Claims that US troops shot dead up to six unarmed Afghan civilians two months ago in Kabul have been given added credibility with a series of photographs offering visual evidence of military misconduct. The pictures were taken by an Afghan passer-by on 29 May in Khair Kane, a district of north Kabul. The 20 photographs appear to show a group of unarmed Afghan civilians being killed by gunfire from an American Humvee. The allegatio! ns made in Kabul follow other recent incidents in which US troops are alleged to have used disproportionate or reckless force against civilians, most notably in Haditha, Iraq, on 19 November 2005 when US troops allegedly killed 15 civilians...

Collateral Damage is Murder
Michael Boldin, Collateral damage is nothing more than a euphemism for state-sponsored mass murder. It is the term given to people killed in military actions who were "not intentionally targeted." In reality, this is pure propaganda. It has always been morally just to protect innocent people against aggressors. But, on the other hand, it has never been moral, nor has it ever been necessary, to bomb cities filled with innocent people. We rarely see the faces or know! the identities of those reduced to the status of collateral damage. It is a gray area where the victim becomes less than a person. Interestingly enough, during the Vietnam War, both Henry Kissinger and Robert McNamara used the term "integers" to describe those civilian deaths that they preferred not to have publicized as human beings. Such is the amazing power of doublespeak...

Why the Lebanese resistance are clobbering the IDF
Lenin's Tomb Eventually, they would have to start asking this sort of question: why are the local European supremacists not beating the brown people? Isn't this what we pay them for? How come they're not doing their job? According to The Guardian this morning, 57 Israeli soldiers have died. The latest estimate for Hezbollah deaths, meanwhile, is 53. The latest estimate for civilian deaths in Lebanon, meanwhile, is 933. Yes, the Israelis have never found any espec! ial difficulty in slaughtering civilians, but why can't they beat what they confidently assured the world was a 'rag-tag' army?...

Professor Paola Manduca, By now there are countless reports, from hospitals, witnesses, armament experts and journalists that strongly suggest that in the present offensive of Israeli forces against Lebanon and Gaza 'new weapons' are being used. New and strange symptoms are reported amongst the wounded and the dead. Issa Nakhleh: the Fascist Character of the Israeli State

GI Special 4H8: The Crime Against The 172nd - August 08, 2006
Thomas F. Barton Soldiers in 4th Squadron, 14th Cavalry Regiment received word of the extension July 27 as they were preparing to depart Combat Outpost Rawah, in central Anbar province, where they had spent most of the previous 12 months. The news hit many hard.
Many of those still in Iraq were within a day or two of leaving. Stryker crews had celebrated their last missions "outside the wire." There was an end-of-semester atmosphere at COP Rawah, with soldiers playing practical jokes on each other as they prepared to head home.
Then came the news that rather than flying home into the arms of their loved ones, they would be heading into the heart of the violence in Baghdad, where more than 1,600 people died in July as sectarian violence between Sunni and Shi?ites spun out of control.
Some soldiers greeted the news with disbelief and tears, others with shrugs.

Israel widens targets to hit civilian sites
Abraham Rabinovich and Martin Chulov ISRAEL plans to ramp up its offensive in Lebanon by attacking the nation's strategic civilian infrastructure to make Beirut more amenable to ceasefire proposals acceptable to Jerusalem. Stung by increasingly deadly rocket attacks and believing an imminent ceasefire to be unlikely, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert met his senior security advisers yesterday to discuss proposals to reinforce and speed up the army's northward movement in order! to push most of Hezbollah's rockets out of range of Israel. "We are now in a process of renewed escalation," a senior general defence staff officer said. "We will continue hitting everything that moves in Hezbollah, but we will also hit strategic civilian infrastructure"...

Red Cross: Israel denying safe passage By _H_ The Israeli military has denied permission for aid groups to move food + medicine to besieged villages in southern Lebanon for two days,

the Red Cross said Monday.
Without guarantees of safe passage, the Red Cross has been unable to move supplies beyond the port city of Tyre to towns + villages south of the Litani River, where thousands of people are believed trapped, said Richard Huguenin, a spokesman for the International Committee of the Red Cross.
The Litani runs roughly parallel to the Lebanese-Israeli border, about 20 miles to the north. The area between it and the border has been the site of the heaviest Israeli bombardment and ground fighting with Hezbollah guerrillas.
"It is now a question of the humanitarian consequences of what is looking like a blockade," Huguenin told The Associated Press in Tyre.
"At night we ask for permission and in the morning we get either a red light or a green light and for the past 48 hours it has been red," he said.

10.Aug.2006 Bloodbath By Susie on War Crimes

On tonight’s Larry King, James Zogby really letting Alan Dershowitz have it, calling Israel’s attacks on Lebanon a “return to the law of the jungle.” He says you can only listen to so many stories of Israel saying they didn’t “mean” to hit civilians before someone has to make them take responsibility for it.

Dershowitz retorts that Hizbollah is trying to get civilians killed to make Israel look bad.

This is just a way of absolving a guilty client, as Alan has done time and time again,” Zogby responds.

I’ll put up the transcript as soon as it’s posted.

11.Sep.2001 09:32 a.m. -at-The official story says that Flight 77 did not hit the building until 9:37 a.m. (top of page 10). For example,

in an interview for the new version of Loose Change (07:00 into the video -- you can pull the scroll bar at the bottom left to the correct time + it will take you right to the right place), Honegger said:
09:32 • Several clocks at the Pentagon stopped at , a full five minutes before the official time that the Boeing 757 hit the building
09:32 • High-level, credible witnesses place the incident time at
• A Pentagon worker said that he witnessed a bomb squad at a subway station near the Pentagon prior to the attack on the morning of 11.Sep.2001, but there were no bomb squads there on previous or subsequent days
I asked Pentagon survivor
April Gallop whether she knew when the explosion occurred at the Pentagon. April sent me the following email in response:

"I looked at my watch before I looked at the computer, it was 9:30 am.
Later that night, I looked at my watch it stopped at 9:30am."

Does Gallop's testimony reinforce what Honegger is saying or not? Or is this another example of moving timelines to fit the official story? Or does it corroborate Matthew Everett's theory that there was a military exercise occuring at the Pentagon on 11.Sep.2001?

I honestly don't know whether this is an important lead or a red herring and a distraction. But I hope that its all sorted out, one way or the other, in the near future.
911tvfakery History on 11.Sep.2001 TV fakery WING TV continues to oppose evidence on 11.Sep.2001 TV Fakery (08/08) By ewing2001

WING TV continues to oppose evidence on 11.Sep.2001 TV Fakery, insulting 10 11.Sep.2001 Scholars (08/08) Update: Rick Siegel signed as 11th 9/11 Scholar the 9/11tvfakery petition WING TV
As usual, WING TV argues with "eyewitness reports" (+ ignored the reports, of those in front of the Towers who didn't see any plane at all) + "photos", instead of analysing the videos, which do NOT match with any objects in the videos at all, as they falsely claim.
WING TV furthermore claimed, that the ultimate conclusion of the TV fakery findings must be allegedly that 'nothing' at all hit the South Tower, while this is still an ongoing investigation from the forensic angle.
WING TV once again proved, that they didn't analyse any footage at all, instead only being satisfied with photos.
WING TV also didn't address the so called "white elephant plane", which circulated the South Tower, noticed also by TV Host Diane Sawyer, but then leaving the crime scene at time of explosion in the South Tower.
WING TV described the research as the product of "insanity" + "incoherency", therefore decided to insult 10 respectable 9/11 Scholars, who
recently signed a petition

to bring this evidence on 9/11 TV Fakery into public awareness.

The images show that one fossil embryo known by the scientific name Markuelia must be most closely related to a modern group of marine invertebrates known as the penis worms,

based on the number of teeth it has + the way they are arranged.

The creature sits very near a three-way split on the evolutionary tree that separated the unsegmented nematode worms + their segmented cousins from the gigantic arthropod phylum,

Ms. Arnold says she loves online research, but the disclosure of her searches has left her disillusioned. In response, she plans to drop her AOL subscription. “We all have a right to privacy,” she said. “Nobody should have found this all out.” Saul Hansell contributed reporting for this article.

John Battelle, the author of the 2005 book “The Search: How Google and Its Rivals Rewrote the Rules of Business and Transformed Our Culture,” said AOL’s misstep, while unfortunate, could have a silver lining if people began to understand just what was at stake. In his book, he says search engines are mining the priceless “database of intentions” formed by the world’s search requests.

It’s only by these kinds of screw-ups and unintended behind-the-curtain views that we can push this dialogue along,” Mr. Battelle said. “As unhappy as I am to see this data on people leaked, I’m heartened that we will have this conversation as a culture, which is long overdue.”
“We acknowledged that there was information that could potentially lead to people being identified, which is why we were so angry.”

But while these searches can tell the casual observer — or the sociologist or the marketer — much about the person who typed them, they can also prove highly misleading.

At first glace, it might appear that Ms. Arnold fears she is suffering from a wide range of ailments. Her search history includes “hand tremors,” “nicotine effects on the body,” “dry mouth” + “bipolar.” But in an interview, Ms. Arnold said she routinely researched medical conditions for her friends to assuage their anxieties.

Explaining her queries about nicotine, for example, she said: “I have a friend who needs to quit smoking and I want to help her do it.”

Asked about Ms. Arnold, an AOL spokesman, Andrew Weinstein, reiterated the company’s position that the data release was a mistake. “We apologize specifically to her,” he said. “There is not a whole lot we can do.”

Happy Birthday, Energy Policy Act! - Think Progress - In early

00.000.2001 Vice President Cheney brought together an energy task force made up of “utility companies + the oil + gas + coal + nuclear energy industries,” + “incorporated their recommendations,

often word for word,” into the administration’s energy plan.

One year ago today, President Bush signed that plan into law.

It lavished $14.5 billion in tax breaks on energy firms, nearly 60 % of which went to “oil, natural gas, coal, electric utilities and nuclear power.”

As recently as April, Bush claimed the energy bill would help take “pressure off the price of gasoline at the pump.” It hasn’t worked out that way, as the chart below shows. (Click here to see the full image, courtesy of the minority staff on the House Government Reform Committee.)

Meanwhile, President Bush’s 2007 budget proposed funding “less than half of what the recent energy bill promised for renewable energy and energy efficiency — the two most readily available opportunities to break our addiction to oil.”

10.Aug.2006 National Review Editor: ‘Global Warming Is Great’ - Judd - It’s getting difficult to distinguish actual opposition to global warming science and parody. FYI, the following is not a joke.

National Review editor James S. Robbins shares his thoughts today:

Personally, I don’t know what all the shouting is about. Global warming is great. Granted, maybe it isn’t really happening + if it is there are strong reasons to doubt that humans have anything to do with it. But if the world is warming, I say “bravo.”

What are the benefits? According to Robbins, “vast regions” of Canada would become “comfortably habitable,” “more land will be available for cultivation,” and there will be a “land boom up the coastlines as people rushed on up for beachfront property.”

Robbins brushes off all negative consequences. He acknowledges that rising sea levels could create “some dislocations” but says that a worldwide sea level rise of as much as 20 feet could be taken care of with “some form of sea wall.” The image above illustrates the impact a 20 foot sea level rise on Florida. Apparently, Robbins plans on building a sea wall around the entire state.

Robbins doesn’t even mention increased hurricane intensity, drought, wildfires and the other severe impacts of global warming — much less explain, as he claims, how these natural phenomena can “be overcome.”

Robbins concludes, when “you are enjoying the surfing at your beach house in upper Newfoundland, you won’t care what caused global warming, you’ll just thank goodness it happened.” In so doing, he illustrates an important point. Intentional or not, his arguments are a joke.

07.Aug.2006 11.Sep.2001 Commission Chairmen Admit Whitewashing the Cause of the Attacks By Jason Miller " Qaeda committed the heinous strike [on 11.Sep.2001] because of the U.S. Military presence in the Middle East and American support for Israel" by Ivan Eland The Independent Institute
As both the Bush administration and its client government in Israel, with their invasions of Arab states in Iraq and Lebanon respectively, make the USA ever more hated in the Islamic world, a new book by the Chairmen of the 9/11 commission admits that the commission whitewashed the root cause of the 11.Sep.2001 attacks—that same interventionist U.S. foreign policy.
Former Governor Tom Kean and former Congressman Lee Hamilton, chairmen of the 9/11 Commission—the publicity hounds that they are—want to keep the long retired, but much celebrated, panel in the public mind. They have written a tell-all book about the trials and tribulations of the panel’s work. Despite the commission’s disastrous recommendations—which led to a reorganization of the U.S. intelligence community that worsened its original defect prior to 11.Sep.2001 (a severe coordination problem caused by bureaucratic bloat)—and apparent whitewashing of the most important single issue that it examined, the chairmen are trying their best to write another best seller. The book usefully details the administration’s willful misrepresentation of its incompetent actions that day, but makes the shocking admission that some commission members deliberately wanted to distort an even more important issue. Apparently, unidentified commissioners wanted to cover up the fact that U.S. support for Israel was one of the motivating factors behind al Qaeda’s 11.Sep.2001 attack. Although to his credit, Hamilton argued for saying that al Qaeda committed the heinous strike because of the U.S. military presence in the Middle East and American support for Israel, the panel watered down that frank conclusion to state that U.S. policy on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and Iraq are “dominant staples of popular commentary across the Arab and Muslim world.”
Some commissioners wanted to cover up the link between the 11.Sep.2001 attack and U.S. support for Israel because this might imply that the USA should alter policy and lessen its support for Israeli actions. How right they were. The question is simple: If the vast bulk of Americans would be safer if U.S. politicians moderated their slavish support of Israel, designed to win the support of key pressure groups at home, wouldn’t it be a good idea to make this change in course? Average U.S. citizens might attenuate their support for Israel if the link between the 11.Sep.2001 attacks and unquestioning U.S. favoritism for Israeli excesses were more widely known. Similarly, if American taxpayers knew that the expensive and unnecessary U.S. policy of intervening in the affairs of countries all over the world—including the U.S. military presence in the Middle East—made them less secure from terrorist attacks at home, pressure would likely build for an abrupt change to a more restrained U.S. foreign policy. But like the original 9/11 Commission report, President Bush regularly obscures this important reality by saying that America was attacked on 11.Sep.2001 because of its freedoms, making no mention of U.S. interventionist foreign policy as the root cause.
Yet numerous public opinion polls in the Islamic world repeatedly prove the president wrong. The surveys show that people in Muslim countries admire American political and economic freedoms, culture + technology. But the numbers go through the floor when Islamic people are asked about their approval of U.S. foreign policy. Much of this negative attitude derives from mindless U.S. backing of anything Israel does. In addition, Osama bin Laden has repeatedly written or stated that he attacks the USA because of its military presence in the Persian Gulf and its support for Israel and corrupt regimes in the Arab world.
The Bush administration has worsened the anti-U.S. hatred in Islamic countries, which drives this blowback terrorism, by its invasion of Iraq and its support of Israel’s excessive military response in Lebanon. Unfortunately, innocent Iraqis and Lebanese are unlikely to be the only ones afflicted with the damage from U.S. interventionism. Innocent Israelis and Americans have been + will likely continue to be, the victims of policies that have been sold by President Bush on the basis of making the citizens of both countries safer and more secure, while the 9/11 Commission obediently has covered the administration’s tracks.

I have run into so much "debunking 9/11 truth" propoganda lately that I felt obliged to begin transcribing what I feel to be the most compelling evidence of a government conspiracy.

This is information that cannot be refuted by Popular Mechanics, NIST or FEMA.

This is not opinion or speculation.

This is fact.

If you don't believe it, you can look it up.
I cordially invite those who believe in the "19 hijackers and Osama in a cave" theory to respond to this post with your views or opinions.

Excerpt from "Omissions and Distortions"
Ashcroft and David Schippers
Two days after 11.Sep.2001, Attorney David Schippers publicly declared that over six weeks prior to 11.Sep.2001, FBI agents had given him information about attacks planned for "lower Manhattan." This information, Schippers claimed, was highly specific, including the dates, the targets + the funding sources of the terrorists . Schippers said further that the FBI field agents told him that their investigations had been curtailed by FBI headquarters, which threatened the agents with prosecution if they went public with their information . Finally – to get to the part of Schippers’ claim that is most relevant to our present concern – he reported that six weeks prior to 11.Sep.2001, he tried to warn Attorney General Ashcroft about the attacks, but that Ashcroft would not return his calls .
David Schippers… had been the Chief Investigative Counsel for the US House of Representatives’ Judiciary Committee 00.000.1998 and its chief prosecutor for the impeachment of President Clinton 00.000.1999. He should have, accordingly, been both well known and well respected in Republican circles.
We would assume, then, that the Commission would have asked Ashcroft about the claims publicly made by Schippers. Did Ashcroft know about his calls? If so, why did he not return them? But we find no sign in the Commission’s report that these questions were asked.
We would also assume that the Commission would have interviewed Schippers, to get the story directly from him. The Commission would have been interested to get Schippers’ testimony under oath about the apparently highly specific advance knowledge FBI agents had reportedly given him. When one does a search for the name of David Schippers in The 9/11 Commission Report, however, one finds not a single reference.

FOX furiously ridiculing 11.Sep.2001 - US government conspiracy theories By Chrish on War on Education

Ever since Scripps Howard released poll findings last week that 36% of Americans believe it is at least somewhat likely that the federal government was involved in or took no action to prevent the attacks of 11.Sep.2001, FOX news talking heads have been ridiculing and dismissing the possibility. On the other hand, they have yet to cause such a kerfuffle over the equally remarkable poll finding that the number of Americans who believe WMDs were found in Iraq has risen to 50%. We don't need to ask why the double standard.
10.Aug.2006 CNN, Israel + American public opinion - Left I on the News A leftwing view of the day's news and the way it's presented in the media CNN, Israel + American public opinion By Eli

This week I wrote: I can hardly watch TV for 15 minutes without seeing an Israeli government spokesperson + if I include American apologists for Israel, the time is even shorter. Well, this isn't a scientific survey, but I think it's gotten even worse. Last night, flipping channels during commercials (I can't watch news all the time), I flipped past CNN twice. In both cases, in less than five seconds I was listening to an Israeli government spokesperson. Then this morning I tried again. 20 seconds later, there was Ehud Ohlmert.

There is incidentally, a very serious message in all this. Ask yourself why the Israeli government is putting so much effort into influencing the American public. I suspect you know the answer. It's because, probably even more than the Israeli public, it is the American public who hold in their hands the power to stop this war, to stop Israeli war crimes, by demanding that our government stop funding them (and stop providing political cover for them). Demonstrations this Saturday aren't going to do that, there's too far to go. But they are an important step. United for Peace & Justice wants you to call your Congressperson and the White House every day + sign a letter to, of all people, John Bolton. Those things won't hurt, of course. But only massive public demonstrations of opposition to this war, as with the other ongoing U.S. wars, really have a chance to move public opinion + in turn the government. Get out this Saturday to one of the national demonstrations being organized by ANSWER, or to whatever local events you can find.

Stand up! Speak out! Stop the war(s) on the world! [I really do need to update that graphic on the top of the page - with all the countries I managed to fit in, I didn't include Lebanon!]
Drudge Retort Red Meat for Yellow Dogs Among Young, Bush's Approval 20% Youth Give Bush Poor Grade, Hurting Republican Hopes, Poll Says (Bloomberg) -- President George W. Bush's hopes of attracting a new generation of voters to the Republican Party may be fading

Younger Americans are far more critical of his job performance than the broader population.

A Bloomberg/Los Angeles Times poll of Americans age 18 to 24 found Bush's approval rating was 20 %, with 53 % disapproving and 28 % with no opinion.

That compares to a 40 % approval rating among Americans of all ages in a separate Bloomberg/Times poll.

Much like Franklin Roosevelt attracted a new generation of voters with the New Deal, Bush and his administration have had high hopes of drawing younger voters to his party. He has sought to do that through policy initiatives aimed at creating an ``ownership society,'' and public relations tactics like a Youth Convention at the party's 2004 national convention, in which his twin daughters took the stage.

Among the initiatives aimed at drawing a new generation into the Republican fold are health-care savings accounts, elimination of the so-called marriage penalty in the U.S. tax code + Bush's proposal to create private investment accounts from a portion of Social Security payroll taxes. `Younger Americans really want to see some leadership,'' Bush said last year as he launched his Social Security plan.

Instead, the Social Security initiative flopped in Congress after attracting criticism from the public and lawmakers of both parties + health-care savings accounts haven't done much to expand coverage, with only about 1 % of the U.S. population currently participating in them.

Social Issues

02.Nov.2004 Bush's re-election strategy also may have damaged his party's standing with younger voters by stressing things intended to drive religious voters concerned about social issues to the ballot box, such as opposition to gay marriage.

``The very cultural issues the president wants to use to rally his party's base are exactly the issues that are alienating younger voters,'' said Ross Baker, a political scientist at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. ``Across a broad swath of social issues, younger Americans see the administration as being out of line with what they believe.''

The war in Iraq is also a major factor driving down public opinion among young voters, said Hans Riemer, political director at Rock the Vote, a group that works to get young people involved in civic life.

``Young people take it very personally,'' he said. ``They feel like it's their generation that's been asked to sacrifice.''

One poll participant, K.C. Chojnacki, an 18-year-old starting her first year in college, expressed those concerns in a follow-up interview. ``I disapprove mostly because I don't agree with the war,'' said Chojnacki, who is from Andover, Minnesota. ``We're going to have to deal with the repercussions, like having to pay for it.''
09.Aug.2006 BRITISH PETROLEUM'S "SMART PIG" The Brilliantly Profitable Timing of the Alaska Oil Pipeline Shutdown by Greg Palast For The Guardian (UK)
Is the Alaska Pipeline corroded? You bet it is. Has been for more than a decade. Did British Petroleum shut the pipe yesterday to turn a quick buck on its negligence, to profit off the disaster it created? Just ask the "smart pig."
Years ago, I had the unhappy job of leading an investigation of British Petroleum's management of the Alaska pipeline system. I was working for the Chugach villages, the Alaskan Natives who own the shoreline slimed by the 1989 Exxon Valdez tanker grounding.
Even then, courageous government inspectors and pipeline workers were screaming about corrosion all through the pipeline. I say "courageous" because BP, which owns 46% of the pipe and is supposed to manage the system, had a habit of hunting down and destroying the careers of those who warn of pipeline problems.
In one case, BP's CEO of Alaskan operations hired a former CIA expert to break into the home of a whistleblower, Chuck Hamel, who had complained of conditions at the pipe's tanker facility. BP tapped his phone calls with a US congressman and ran a surveillance and smear campaign against him. When caught, a US federal judge said BP's acts were "reminiscent of Nazi Germany."
This was not an isolated case. Captain James Woodle, once in charge of the pipe's Valdez terminus, was blackmailed into resigning the post when he complained of disastrous conditions there. The weapon used on Woodle was a file of faked evidence of marital infidelity. Nice guys, eh?
Now let's talk timing. BP's suddenly discovered corrosion necessitating an emergency shut-down of the line is the same corrosion Dan Lawn has been screaming about for 15 years. Lawn is a steel-eyed government inspector who has kept his job only because his union's lawyers have kept BP from having his head.
Indeed, it's pretty darn hard for BP to claim it is surprised to find corrosion this week when Lawn issued a damning report on corrosion right after a leak and spill were discovered on March 2 of this year.
Why shut the pipe now? The timing of a sudden inspection and fix of a decade-long problem has a suspicious smell. A precipitous shutdown in mid-summer, in the middle of Middle East war(s), is guaranteed to raise prices and reap monster profits for BP. The price of crude jumped $2.22 a barrel on the shutdown news to over $76. How lucky for BP which sells four million barrels of oil a day. Had BP completed its inspection and repairs a couple years back -- say, after Dan Lawn's tenth warning -- the oil market would have hardly noticed.
But $2 a barrel is just the beginning of BP's shut-down bonus. The Alaskan oil was destined for the California market which now faces a supply crisis at the very height of the summer travel season. The big winner is ARCO petroleum, the largest retailer in the Golden State. ARCO is a 100%-owned subsidiary of … British Petroleum.
BP could have fixed the pipeline problem this past winter, after their latest corrosion-caused oil spill. But then ARCO would have lost the summertime supply-squeeze windfall.
Enron Corporation was infamous for deliberately timing repairs to maximize profit. Would BP also manipulate the market in such a crude manner? Some US prosecutors think they did so in the US propane market. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) just six weeks ago charged the company with approving an Enron-style scheme to crank up the price of propane sold in poor rural communities in the US. One former BP exec has pleaded guilty.
Lord Browne, the imperious CEO of BP, has apologized for that scam, for the Alaska spill, for this week's shutdown and for the deaths in 2005 of 15 workers at the company's mortally sloppy refinery operation at Texas City, Texas.
I don't want readers to think BP isn't civic-minded. The company's US CEO, Bob Malone, was Co-Chairman of the Bush re-election campaign in Alaska. Mr. Bush, in turn, was so impressed with BP's care of Alaska's environment that he pushed again to open the state's arctic wildlife refuge (ANWR) to drilling by the BP consortium.
Indeed, you can go to Alaska today and see for yourself the evidence of BP's care of the wilderness. You can smell it: the crude oil still on the beaches from the Exxon Valdez spill.
Exxon took all the blame for the spill because they were dumb enough to have the company's name on the ship. But it was BP's pipeline managers who filed reports that oil spill containment equipment was sitting right at the site of the grounding near Bligh Island. However, the reports were bogus, the equipment wasn't there and so the beaches were poisoned. At the time, our investigators uncovered four-volume's worth of faked safety reports and concluded that BP was at least as culpable as Exxon for the 1,200 miles of oil-destroyed coastline.
Nevertheless, m'Lord Browne preens himself with his corporation's environmental record. We know BP cares about nature because they have lots of photos of solar panels in their annual reports -- and they've painted every one of their gas stations green.
The green paint-job is supposed to represent the oil giant's love of Mother Nature. But the good Lord, Mr. Browne, knows it stands for the color of the Yankee dollar.
BP claims the profitable timing of its Alaska pipe shutdown can be explained because they've only now run a "smart pig" through the pipes to locate the corrosion. The "pig" is an electronic drone that BP should have been using continuously, though they had not done so for 14 years. The fact that, in the middle of an oil crisis, they've run it through now, forcing the shutdown, reminds me, when I consider Lord Browne's closeness to George Bush, that the company's pig is indeed, very, very smart.

Lying By Spooked - The question really is NOT whether the government and the media are lying about 11.Sep.2001. There is no doubt they are lying about it to some degree. The question really is: HOW MUCH ARE THEY LYING? In my opinion, they are lying A LOT.
10.Aug.2006 CNN's Nguyen failed to challenge claims that Qana photos were staged - Media Matters for America Latest Media Matters for America items CNN's Nguyen failed to challenge claims that Qana photos were staged In Propaganda/Noise Machine

On the August 7 edition of CNN's Live From ..., host Betty Nguyen left unchallenged the suggestion by blogger Charles Johnson that photographs taken after the July 30 Israeli air strike in Qana, Lebanon, that killed at least 28 civilians, many of them children, were staged "for propaganda purposes," and that "Hezbollah controls a lot of the pictures and a lot of the media that you see coming out of Lebanon." In fact, Reuters, the Associated Press + Agence France-Presse (AFP) -- each of which has published photos from Qana -- have all denied allegations that photographs were staged.

The Reuters photographs at Qana were taken by freelance photographer Adnan Hajj, who was suspended by Reuters. Reuters stated that it took action "after he [Hajj] doctored an image of the aftermath of an Israeli air strike on Beirut." But a Reuters article on August 7 announcing Hajj's suspension specifically denied accusations that the Qana photographs were staged:

He (Hajj) was among several photographers from the main international news agencies whose images of a dead child being held up by a rescuer in the village of Qana, south Lebanon, after an Israeli air strike on July 30 have been challenged by blogs critical of the mainstream media's coverage of the Middle East conflict.

Reuters and other news organizations reviewed those images and have all rejected allegations that the photographs were staged.

Johnson used the interview with Nguyen to forward a theory circulating in the right-wing blogosphere that, as Johnson wrote on his blog, "there's convincing evidence that the pictures from Qana were cynically staged and exploited in a way that will turn your stomach, as the Lebanese 'rescue worker' we see in many of these photos parades around with a dead child for four hours, even changing his clothes and continuing the exhibition." Similarly, conservative columnist Michelle Malkin wrote in her August 2 syndicated column: "[H]ere is a suggestion for all the intrepid American journalists gallivanting with Hezbollah's handlers in the region: Perhaps you could put down the figurative hookah pipes, take off your sympathy hajibs and find out the identity of the green-helmeted guy holding up baby corpses in Qana as props for your sensational, page-one pictures." National Review Online editor at large and Los Angeles Times columnist Jonah Goldberg, asked, "Was Qana Staged?" James Lewis, of the website, wrote on July 31: "The New York Times has announced that the entire world is outraged at Israel's behavior in bombing Qana. So it must be true. Or is it?"

The theory is based on time stamps of photographs taken by Reuters, AP + AFP that purportedly show an inconsistency of events. One example of the theory circulated by the weblog is that photos of a girl in an ambulance have a time stamp earlier in the day than photos of the same girl before the ambulance arrived. After showing examples of the photographs and the time stamps they were filed under in an attempt to prove its theory, concluded "they have been staged for effect, exploiting the victims in an unwholesome manner." Malkin added to the theory in her column by suggesting that it took eight hours for the bodies to be recovered and asking: "To the photographer-stenographers who were herded to the scene eight hours after the strike, why is it that the bodies of the children were already in a state of rigor mortis?" An August 1 Associated Press article addressed the charges:

The AP said information from its photo editors showed the events were not staged + that the time stamps could be misleading for several reasons, including that web sites can use such stamps to show when pictures are posted, not taken. An AFP executive said he was stunned to be questioned about it. Reuters, in a statement, said it categorically rejects any such suggestion. [...]

There are also several reasons not to draw conclusions from time stamps, [AP director of photography Santiago] Lyon said. Following a news event like this, the AP does not distribute pictures sequentially; photos are moved based on news value and how quickly they are available for an editor to transmit.

The AP indicates to its members when they are sent on the wire + member Web sites sometimes use a different time stamp to show when they are posted.

Furthermore, in a report by CNN correspondent Tim Lister that preceded Nguyen's interview with Johnson, Lister said that Johnson was behind the examining of "documents used by CBS News in its reporting of President George W. Bush's service in the Texas National Guard" two years ago. Lister's report repeated the false claim that Johnson "found the type style used proved they could not have been from 1972 as claimed." But as Media Matters for America has noted, an independent investigation into the story, which resulted in producer Mary Mapes's firing after its release, found that CBS News failed to follow basic journalistic principles in the preparation and reporting of the piece; the report noted evidence challenging the documents' authenticity but offered no conclusion about whether the documents were forgeries.

From the August 7 edition of CNN's Live From ... :

NGUYEN: A case now of journalistic license that cost a newsman his job. A freelance photographer suspended by a major wire service for breaking the No. 1 rule of responsible reporting. CNN's Tim Lister has the story.

[begin video clip]

LISTER: This is the photograph that launched 1,000 blogs. It shows the Beirut skyline shrouded in smoke. The caption reads, "Smoke billows from burning buildings destroyed during an overnight Israeli air raid." The photographer was Reuters' freelancer, Adnan Hajj.

But the plumes of smoke raised suspicions among bloggers, especially Charles Johnson of the site Little Green Footballs. He said smoke had been added to the image, probably using a Photoshop clone tool. Reuters pulled the photograph and posted the original on its website. The agency also disclosed it has learned that Adnan Hajj doctored another photo last week, increasing the number of flares being fired by an Israeli F-16 from one to three.

It's now suspended Hajj, whose recent work includes this front-page photograph in Saturday's New York Times . Reuters has also withdrawn all his photos from its database. Reuters said Hajj had denied deliberately attempting to manipulate the Beirut image, saying he was trying to remove dust marks and that he had made mistakes due to bad lighting conditions.

It's not the first time that Charles Johnson, who edits the blog Little Green Footballs from Los Angeles, has claimed a scalp. Two years ago he examined documents used by CBS News in its reporting of President George W. Bush's service in the Texas National Guard. And he found the type style used proved they could not have been from 1972 as claimed. CBS eventually withdrew the report and fired its producer. Tim Lister, CNN, Atlanta.

[end video clip]

NGUYEN: All right. So the man who discovered the photo was a fake, weblogger Charles Johnson joins me now live from Los Angeles. Charles, first of all, let's go through these two pictures, the original one and the one that was altered and tell me what was done exactly.

JOHNSON: Yes, well, if you see in the smoke plume at the upper left, you can see repeating patterns, sort of circular patterns, it's repeated three times through that.

NGUYEN: Yeah, you can. And it's darker, as well.

JOHNSON: Well -- yes, that's right. Photoshop has a tool called the clone tool which lets you basically make a copy of one section of an image and paste it into other places in the image, sort of like a rubber stamp. And that's what was done here. And as you can see in this image, there was also a duplication of buildings. So, basically, this photographer created an imaginary version of Beirut that did not really exist.

NGUYEN: All right, but the photographer says that he didn't deliberately manipulate this photo, that he was basically trying to get some dust marks off of that. Do you not buy that side of the story?

JOHNSON: I think that's a little bit straining credulity to say something like that because how could you accidentally create an entire imaginary city? It seems to make no sense.

NGUYEN: You've got a point there. It seems like, though, this is what is interesting to me. The original photo, if we can put it back up. That, in itself, seems powerful enough, why would someone even want to doctor it?

JOHNSON: It's strange, isn't it? And even more than that, what's amazing to me is that an editor did not catch this before the picture hit the news wires.

NGUYEN: Well, yeah, that was going to be my question to you. In looking at these two pictures, the original is the one that is on the right. Why do you think it is, I mean, because editors are there for a reason. You think they would have had the experience and the background to catch something if it's doctored.

NGUYEN: Why is that you -- a blogger is the person who caught it?

JOHNSON: Well, I just happened to be the one. A reader of mine tipped me off to it + I looked at the picture and instantly realized that it was a fake because I have an extensive background in image manipulation software and Web design and graphic design.

NGUYEN: Well, we do want to let you know that Reuters did, you know, as we mentioned, pull the picture, but they also issued this statement -- and we're going to put it up -- saying, "Manipulating photographs in this way is entirely unacceptable and contrary to all the principles of consistently being held by Reuters throughout its long and distinguished history." My question it you is this: This photographer in question here not only has his photos been pulled of this particular picture, but others as well. Does he have a history of doctoring photos?

JOHNSON: I don't know if he has a history of doctoring photos, but I think there were a number of questions raised about his participation in the Israeli bombing at Qana and possible staging of photos. Not doctoring, exactly, but staging bodies so that they could be photographed for propaganda purposes. That's the consensus of the opinion on the blogs that I read.

NGUYEN: So, with media being what it is and getting the information out there just as quickly as possible, is there a danger here of seeing more doctored photos? More fakes out there?

JOHNSON: Absolutely. Because you have to take into consideration that Hezbollah controls a lot of the pictures and a lot of the media that you see coming out of Lebanon + so, I think that real questions need to be raised about the source of these images + especially when they use local photographers to get these images.

NGUYEN: Well, you're one man, you caught this, but how, how can the rest of this be monitored? What needs to be done to prevent other fakes from getting out there?

JOHNSON: I'm one man, but there's an entire army of blogs and blog readers out there + we can count on an enormous amount of scrutiny of the mainstream media for these types of issues.

NGUYEN: You think it's given a bad name to photographers everywhere?

JOHNSON: I wouldn't say to photographers everywhere, but I think it's very questionable that this photo came out of Lebanon at a time that is very crucial in the history of the world. I think that, really, we need to cast a very skeptical eye.

NGUYEN: All right. Charles Johnson, a blogger with [sic]. By the way, why is it called

JOHNSON: Oh, I can't tell you that, sorry.

NGUYEN: It's a secret, huh? Maybe offline we'll find out.

JOHNSON: Thanks, Betty.

NGUYEN: Thank you, Charles.
George Monbiot: Hizbullah Unprovoked?

'Whatever we think of Israel's assault on Lebanon, all of us seem to agree about one fact: that it was a response, however disproportionate, to an unprovoked attack by Hizbullah.

I repeated this "fact" in my last column, when I wrote that "Hizbullah fired the first shots". This being so, the Israeli government's supporters ask peaceniks like me, what would you have done?

It's an important question.

But its premise, I have now discovered, is flawed.

00.May 2000 -Since- 'Israel's withdrawal from southern Lebanon, there have been hundreds of violations of the "blue line" between the two countries.

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (Unifil) reports that Israeli aircraft crossed the line "on an almost daily basis" between

00.000.2001-00.000.2003 + "persistently" until 2006.

These incursions "caused great concern to the civilian population, particularly low-altitude flights that break the sound barrier over populated areas".

On some occasions, Hizbullah tried to shoot them down with anti-aircraft guns.' (Guardian article).

10.Aug.2006 story by Daniel Hopsicker, read his latest.
10.Aug.2006 For now, I would say that a pattern is emerging. There exists a loose confederation - a non-Italian "mafia," if you will - of powerful "businessmen" involved with various forms of financial fraud. Their real businesses often involve shipping. One doesn't need much imagination to guess what is being shipped.
10.Aug.2006 Hopsicker is still hot on the trail of the Skyway drug jet -- the one found on a Mexican tarmac with 5.5 tons of coke aboard. Hopsicker makes the very large claim that this bust provides a glimpse of a larger underworld. The network includes...
Rogue U.S. defense contractor Titan Corp in San Diego;

CIA proprietary airlines;

fugitive” Saudi billionaires, Gulf States Sheiks and financiers;

the Israeli Mossad + right wing Israeli political parties identified with Jewish settler interests;

retired” officers of the CIA + U.S. military intelligence;

Texas Republican kingmakers + private investment banks;

member of U.S. organized crime...

stock swindlers in Vancouver, Canada responsible for multi-billion dollar financial fraud;

officials from the party of Mexican President Vicente Fox;

Colombian + Mexican drug cartels;

Florida air charter companies which enjoy—as did the Florida aviation companies associated with the terrorist hijackers—apparent official immunity from prosecution; +

Lebanese “industrialists” in Mexico known to the Mexican press as the “Narco-Pederastas,” for their penchant for molesting children, with apparent immunity from prosecution, both boys + girls, as young as four.

you will recall,

was the employer of Meekram Chams, the strange individual who appears to have had such strange interactions with Mohammed Atta.
So far, this may seem like loose "conspiracy babble," in which names are named but no connective tissue is provided.

Hopsicker scores a breakthrough, however, when he identifies a major stockholder in Skyway (which, you will recall, was a scam operation designed to bilk investors):

Argyll Equities of Boerne, Texas, a subsidiary of the the Argyll group of La Jolla.
Argyll previously arranged for a $17 million loan to a Mexican businessman, who in turn provided "significant capital" to a “Chilean narcotics trafficker" named Manuel Vicente Losada, arrested in the Chilean capital of Santiago after being “linked to a shipment of five tons of cocaine which U.S. drug enforcement officials in Miami intercepted over six years ago on the vessel Harbour, as it headed toward Guantanamo Bay.”

" Guantanamo Bay "? asks Hopsicker. The implications hang in the air.

09.Aug.2006 The cracks in the façade are growing, not shrinking. Wilson says this is the last gasp of the dying dinosaurs.

Sheldrake says that teleology is the underlying force that the lizard kings can’t see. All the hopeful, gotta-wear-shades futurists say that information cannot be dammed, bottled, or pasteurized.

More and more of the unawakened are, however reluctantly, waking up.

I have personally turned hundreds of people onto Jeff’s "The Coincidence Theorist's Guide to 9/11," as well as the mind-opening work of William Blum + Wade Frazier + I hear back from these people that the word spreads further still. The dam-builders did get one of their theories right: the one with the dominoes they were trying to scare us with in Asia and Latin America. Only, it doesn’t work unless there’s an awakening involved, an unpleasant surprise. Those victims of colonialism weren’t surprised. They knew they were being taken, against their will, whenever the white devils sold them something. Soon we all will.
09.Aug.2006 The only way to stop this thing is to reboot the whole orb that we are stuck on + I don't think the PTB will let that happen
09.Aug.2006 In a Rumsfeldian sense, we should know enough now to know that we know enough.

But the insight 9/11's new flesh gives us into America's unnatural state of affairs becomes debilitation, if nothing changes by it. How to be the change is our challenge. Perhaps our last challenge.

09.Aug.2006 The great public spectacles written in the sky - the gaudy lights + the falling towers - are meant to debilitate us + pin our hopes passively upon a "disclosure" by the intelligence community's own information warriors. Nothing good + nothing true, can come of that.
09.Aug.2006 Has the Bush administration been "rocked" by these cautious disclosures? Only in the fantasy life of Democrats still awaiting their Fitzmas. Rather, it presses ahead with the next war, expands Guantanamo Bay + intends to "allow the secretary of defense to add crimes at will to those under the military court's jurisdiction," meaning that dissidents "not directly involved in acts of international terrorism" may be subject to the Pentagon's discretionary justice.
09.Aug.2006 (Kyle Hence's 11 Questions Avoided by the Media On NORAD Tapes makes a nice, concise refutation of Bronner's plodding.)
09.Aug.2006 the release of Vanity Fair 's "NORAD tapes", bringing at last into mainstream discourse NORAD's coincident gaming of hijacked aircraft the morning of 11.Sep.2001 :
"When they told me there was a hijack, my first reaction was 'Somebody started the exercise early,'" [Lieutenant Colonel] Nasypany later told me. The day's exercise was designed to run a range of scenarios, including a "traditional" simulated hijack in which politically motivated perpetrators commandeer an aircraft, land on a Cuba-like island + seek asylum. "I actually said out loud, 'The hijack's not supposed to be for another hour.'"

09.Aug.2006 Lee Hamilton, the former vice chairman of the Kean Commission and trusted Bush family fixer stretching all the way back to the October Surprise and Iran/Contra acknowledges "One out of three sounds high, but that may very well be right." (Hamilton is a Democrat, it should be noted, because if your wiring isn't up to code for these days that still matters.)
09.Aug.2006 a full third of Americans now, according to a poll this past week, suspect federal officials either "assisted in the 11.Sep.2001 terrorist attacks or took no action to stop them so the USA could go to war in the Middle East."
09.Aug.2006 Apart from the chain-smoking + though there's not much to laugh about, the opening sequence of Who Killed John O'Neill? is comically familiar. I don't sleep, I don't eat, I don't shower, I don't shave.... I don't do anything but think. I filled eight binders with tabs like "Osama," "Foreknowledge" and "Anthrax" with articles like the Guardian's "CIA Agent Alleged to Have Met Bin Laden in July," Newsweek's "Alleged Hijackers May Have Trained at U.S. Bases" and the Baltimore Sun's "Anthrax Matches Army Spores." I started reading again the samizdat history of the National Security State, though now with greater urgency and comprehension, because the existential stakes had been raised + having seen the towers fall I felt as though I knew already how the story ended.
09.Aug.2006 "The battle for the mind of North America will be fought in the video arena: the Videodrome," says the McLuhanesque Brian O'Blivion, referring to the pirate broadcast of a torture and murder circus that contains in its transmission a frequency that triggers the tumorous growth of new organs of perception in the brains of its viewers. "The television screen is the retina of the mind's eye. Therefore, the television screen is part of the physical structure of the brain. Therefore, whatever appears on the television screen emerges as raw experience for those who watch it. Therefore, television is reality + reality is less than television."
For almost all of us, 11.Sep.2001 was only a televised event. Yet, like Ruby shooting Oswald live in America's livingroom + like Videodrome, it was also a spectacular trauma; the unscheduled program was also programming, inducing a national trance to initiate the stage-managed winding down of our familiar world. But it also created within us fresh capacities of insight + that too may have been the intent.

The ministers decided to send a delegation to the UN in New York - which will have Washington shaking in its boots - and the Saudis agreed to an Arab summit in Mecca, but one which should not be rushed because it must be carefully prepared - which sounded very like George W Bush's equally mendacious remark that a ceasefire had to be carefully prepared. And that will have them shaking in the shoes in Tel Aviv.

Die Kleinen haben das falsche Ergebnis viel länger betrachtet als das richtige, schreiben die Forscher im US- Fachblatt "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences".

09.Aug.2006 Disturbing reports Reports are coming in of electoral shennanigans in two of the most closely-watched primary races. Cynthia McKinney's campaign, it has been alleged, has suffered from having her name left off the ballot. I received this message from McKinney: One voter went to vote and my name didn't appear on the ballot.

The voter went and complained + then when she went back to cast her vote, my name was on the ballot. This occurred at Wadsworth Elementary School.
The machine that tallies the total vote broke down at Stronghold Church around 2:10 pm. At 3:15 it's still down.

Meanwhile, problems with the machines have cropped up in the Connecticut Lieberman/Lamont face-off : Though polls open at 6:00 a.m. sharp, Davis Street didn't open until 6:35.
"I found no voting booths open," said Dr. Herbert Sacks. "That's the first time in thirty years that anything like this has happened."
"A lot made an effort to come out early," Garner said. "We have commitments and those would not allow us to be here on the other end of the day."
"There are people who commute distances to New York and are due at work, they take the train to be there at seven and don't get back into town early enough to vote, so it effectively disenfranchises them," Lyndee Gold said. I've been screaming the word "REVOTE" since 2000. Will anyone listen this time?

08.Aug.2006 FACT CHECK: O’Reilly Claims Conservatives Don’t Call Liberals ‘Racists’ Or ‘Bigots’ - Think Progress -

Yesterday on Fox News, Bill O’Reilly claimed that he tried to do some “fair + balanced” research, but couldn’t find anyone on the right who calls liberals “haters” — bigots, racists, anti-Semites, or homophobes.

(He ignored Michelle Malkin when she admitted that in her columns, she takes “liberal bigots to task for their hypocrisy.”) Watch it:

We did some quick research for O’Reilly and found examples:

Welcome to the 21st century librarian: book-smart, reality-stupid, Bush-deranged bigots . [Malkin, 21.Jun.2006]

+ yet, I keep reading — + in fact, I think I read in, I believe, I heard you say that there was some crossover vote in this race, something like 20 % of white voters voted for [New Orleans mayor Ray] Nagin, who is obviously a full-blown racist . [Tucker Carlson, 22.May 2006]

[Senate Minority Leader Harry] Reid knows a little something about being racist . [Rich Galen, 22.Jun.2006]

O’Reilly also dismissed calling liberals “insane,” “harpies,” “witches” or “retarded” as “just the usual partisan rhetoric.”

Full transcript below:

O’REILLY: I had Leonard Pitts in - he’s a columnist from the “Miami Herald” in some of the teases. Now, Pitts’ column today didn’t call anybody a racist. He was writing about Mel Gibson. Waling that line. Walking that line. Now, Michelle, have you ever done that in your column? Because we have researched right wing columnists and I’m going to get to that in a minute. But have you ever labeled anybody a racist, a homophobe or anything like that?

MALKIN: Well I call people what they are in my column. And occasionally that it does meaning taking liberal bigots to task for their hypocrisy. I was on your show back in the fall when I was on my book tour talking about “Unhinged” which has a whole chapter on unhinged liberal bigots who on the one hand talk about compassion an tolerance and on the other hand use the most vile epithets against their opponents.

And I think that there is a place for labeling it when it is .

O’REILLY: But aren’t they hypocrites rather than bigots? See, here is what I am objecting to. We had John Podhoretz, who is a columnist send - he is a conservative guy. He says that Al Gore is insane. OK. That is just the usual partisan rhetoric. Ann Coulter calls people witches, harpies, all kinds — retarded. Name calling is one thing but labeling a person a bigot, all right, saying they are anti-Semitic or homophobic, that elevates it up into here is a hater. That person is a hater. These columnists don’t know these people. They don’t know me. They don’t know Mel Gibson. They don’t know anybody. To do that, I think, is grossly irresponsible.

MALKIN: Well, yes, especially when + of course, it is all they have. And I have been on the receiving end on that ever since I began my career as a public commentator when all they have to say in response to your meticulous arguments, for example, that lax immigration enforcement endangers us. The first thing that a lot of these leftists do is call you a xenophobe and immigrant barber. You hate Hispanics. If you talk about the war on terror, if you talk about jihadist infiltration, you are an Islamophobe. And it goes on and on. And this is a crude tool in the intellectual toolshed of the American left. It is all they have. It is old, it’s rusty and ineffective.

O’REILLY: I don’t know whether the right does it. We really try to research this fair and balanced. We didn’t come up with anybody on the right who did…

MALKIN: Well, that pretty much answers the question.

O’REILLY: Other than the name calling. There is a lot of name calling on the right.

08.Aug.2006 Gen. George Casey: Civil War Is ‘The Most Significant Threat Right Now’ In Iraq - Judd - In an interview with ABC News, Gen George Casey — the top U.S. commander in Iraq — said a civil war in Iraq “certainly is possible.” He described a potential civil war as “the most significant threat right now” in Iraq.

Casey adds his voice to a chorus of top generals — including CentCom commander John Abizaid and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Peter Pacewho warn that Iraq is in danger of sliding into civil war. Watch it:

Yesterday, President Bush dismissed the concerns expressed by Casey and other Generals. Bush said “You know, I hear people say, Well, civil war this, civil war that. The Iraqi people decided against civil war when they went to the ballot box.”

Democracy not on the march, says Justice Kennedy. “Our best security, our only security, is in the world of ideas + I sense a slight foreboding,” Kennedy said in a speech. “Make no mistake, there’s a jury that’s out.

In half the world, the verdict is not yet in” on Western-style democracy.

A plague of jellyfish along Europe’s beaches has become the latest environmental hazard to be blamed on global warming.”

What friends are for:

Majority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) reportedly met with Rep. Bob Ney (R-OH) last week to “urge him to step aside, reminding him that” if he lost his seat, “Ney could not expect a lucrative career on K Street to pay those tuition bills [for his children], along with the hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal fees piling up.”

Defenders of Ann Coulter’s “scholarship” have repeatedly pointed to the hundreds of endnotes contained in her books.

MediaMatters examined the endnotes of her most recent title, “Godless,” and found them “rife with distortions and falsehoods.”

Congress is all in the family . USA Today finds that there are 53 U.S. senators and representatives closely related to governors or other members of Congress, up from 24 00.000.1986.

Despite bipartisan objections, the Bush administration is producing the first new landmines “in over 10 years,” placing the U.S. “on the same short list of nations that includes Iran, North Korea and Burma, a list of countries producing landmine weapons banned by an international treaty.”

New study shows that children on Medicaid or with no insurance have a death rate twice as high as that of children with private insurance.

Nationwide, providing more primary and preventive care to those children could save an estimated $5 billion a year.”

08.Aug.2006 The UK's Total Surveillance - Zonk 296 -Budenny - "The Register has a story in its ongoing coverage of the UK ID Card story.

This one suggests, with links to a weekend news story, that the Prime Minister in waiting has bought the idea that all electronic transactions in the UK should be linked to a central government/police database.

Every cash withdrawal, every credit card purchase, ever loyalty card use ...

And that data should flow back from the police database to (eg) a loyalty card use.

So, for example, not only would the government know what books you were buying, but the bookstore would also know if you had an outstanding speeding ticket!"
