22.May 2006 Change of Focus for Liquid Crystals ScuttleMonkey 85 Dylan Knight Rogers -

PhysicsWeb is reporting that US physicists have discovered a new liquid-crystal lens design that can alter the focus by varying the voltage applied.

From the article:

"The new lens, which has been built by Shin-Tson Wu and colleagues at the University of Central Florida, allows the focus to be changed in a new way.

The device consists of a mixture of liquid-crystal molecules + smaller N-vinylpyrrollidone monomers placed between two glass substrates, each of which is coated with a thin transparent layer of conducting indium tin oxide. They then placed a concave glass lens with a flat base on top of one of the substrates."

Several sources involved in the weapons trade, interviewed by ICIJ, noted Bout’s "deep connections" with Ernst Werner Glatt, reputedly one of Washington’s favourite gunrunners during the Cold War.

Glatt also had ties to Washington’s Cold War opponent. He was "very well ensconced in downtown Moscow," one source said.

"He was so tight with the KGB in the early 1990s that they even tried to get him into the building next door to their headquarters."

Glatt did not respond to requests for comment.

Q: During the Kosovo crisis, progressives were split on intervention. Do you think the intervention advocates appreciated -- or even considered -- the vested interests of defense procurement?

A: Absolutely not + that was one of the scary things about calls from liberals for intervention in Kosovo.

People think this was a humanitarian intervention. This opens up a whole can of worms.

The US has always used this claim to justify use of force.

And there are certainly cases where use of force is justified.

But just like the Gulf War, the Kosovo intervention allowed the US to roll out its supposedly brilliant high-tech arsenal.

In both cases, the effective use of high-tech weapons was inflated.

The Serbs shot down a Stealth [aircraft] with a missile that dates back to 1963.

Time after time, we found our high-tech weapons not nearly as effective.

They couldn't see through clouds. They couldn't pick out enemy targets.

The kill figures for the Serbs were highly inflated. An entire army that rolled in rolled back out. O

nly a handful of tanks were killed.

Yet on the nightly news, it appeared that the stuff was working brilliantly.

And this gives aid and comfort to the Pentagon, which can go to the public and say, "See how brilliant our weapons are?

We didn't lose any soldiers!" And this creates a momentum for building up new weapons systems and funneling more money to arms contractors.

In that sense, Kosovo was a huge PR success for the Pentagon, just like the war in the Gulf. Purely in military terms, they obviously overwhelmed their opponent.

But that didn't have a lot to do with high-tech weaponry.

All we proved was that we can bomb the shit out of a small country, which was the same thing the Germans did to the Spanish at Guernica.

Ronald Desmet had formerly flown for the Saudi royal family + had been appointed as chairman of the Liberian Aviation Authority's agency in the United Kingdom. [13]

Using these facts as proof of his integrity, he succeeded even in becoming a member of the Ostend Rotary club.

After he left Ostend, V. Bout just went on with his sanctions-busting activities.

According to a 1999 report of HRW, he had founded a subsidiary of Air Cess based at the South African airport of Pietersburg, called Air Pass.

From Pietersburg, Air Pass, against UN regulations, transported fuel tanks, towing trucks, food and mining equipment to Unita-held areas of Angola. [14]

During its activities, AirPass had a direct link with a South African agency, Norse Air Charter, a subsidiary of the British air charter company Air Foyle of Luton.

According to The Guardian ( 05.Aug.2000 ), it appears that Air Foyle had, through Norse Air Charter, a two-year business partnership with Victor Bout.

Shortly after South African authorities suspected him of smuggling arms to the Unita rebel forces, V. Bout moved his operations to another company AirCess Swaziland at Manzini airport.

After the Swazi authorities discovered that his company was transporting military equipment,

V. Bout decided to move completely from southern Africa + to make Bangui in the Central African Republic his new African stronghold. [14]

19.Jan.2001 New United Nations sanctions against Afghanistan take effect, adding to those from 1999 (see
November 14, 1999).

The sanctions limit travel by senior Taliban authorities, freeze bin Laden's and the Taliban's assets + order the closure of Ariana Airlines offices abroad.

The sanctions also impose an arms embargo against the Taliban, but not against Northern Alliance forces battling the Taliban. [AP 19.Dec.2000 ]

The arms embargo has no visible effect because the sanctions fail to stop Pakistani military assistance. [9/11 Commission Report 3/24/04]

The sanctions also fail to stop the illegal trade network the Taliban is secretly running through Ariana (see Mid-1996-October 2001).

Two companies, Air Cess and Flying Dolphin, take over most of Ariana's traffic.

Air Cess is owned by the Russian arms dealer Victor Bout + Flying Dolphin is owned by the United Arab Emirates' former ambassador to the US, who is also an associate of Bout (see October 1996).

00.000.2000 -In late- despite UN reports linking Flying Dolphin to arms smuggling, the UN gives Flying Dolphin permission to take over Ariana's closed routes, which it does until the new sanctions take effect

Victor Bout fleet of aircraft has been based in Central African countries, South Africa + U.A.E. of Sharjah.

Victor Bout also operated out of Ostend, Belgium + he seems to have had connections with Mexair in Geneva (00.000.1989-00.000.1994 ).

21.May 2006 ABC’s Ross: Surveillance of Journalists ‘Makes Me Feel…As If We Are Drug Dealers or Terrorists’ Nico

This morning on CNN’s Reliable Sources, ABC’s chief investigative correspondent Brian Ross — who this week learned he was the target of federal surveillance operationsdescribed the effect that unchecked spying is having on journalists:

ROSS: [I]t makes me feel, in a way — and this is, I think, the disturbing part — as if we are drug dealers or terrorists trying to traffic in information + should we be using bags full of quarters like old Mafia capos to avoid having our phone calls traced? I don’t think I’m doing anything wrong; I don’t think any other reporter is, either.

We’re trying to cover these stories, which are difficult, but which are very important.

Ross also revealed that the surveillance has had a chilling effect on his sources, who now risk being exposed:

I’m working on a big story now with people who are confidential sources inside the Federal Air Marshal Service.

They were all alarmed that they might be exposed as talking with me in violation of rules.

21.May 2006 On Wednesday, the Competitive Enterprise Institute – a front group funded by ExxonMobil and other big oil companieslaunched two advertisements in response to Al Gore’s new movie about global warming, An Inconvenient Truth.

One of the advertisements attempts to show that the scientific evidence for global warming is in dispute, claiming a study found the “Antarctic ice sheet is getting thicker, not thinner.”

The primary author of that study, Curt Davis, has issued statement blasting CEI’s use of his study. Here’s an excerpt:

These television ads are a deliberate effort to confuse and mislead the public about the global warming debate.

They are selectively using only parts of my previous research to support their claims. They are not telling the entire story to the public.

The whole story, according to Davis, is that increased precipitation in the interior of Antarctica is “predicted consequence of global climate warming.”

Warmer temperatures mean more participation and more snow on the interior of the continent.

Meanwhile, “Growth of the ice sheet was only noted on the interior of the ice sheet and did not include coastal areas. Coastal areas are known to be losing mass.”

The reality is, there are no legitimate scientists or scientific studies that support CEI’s views on global warming.

So they are forced to grossly misrepresent scientific research. Unfortunately for them, the scientists don’t look like they are going to put up with it.

And yet, somehow, on 9/11, Mayor Rudy Giuliani
knew in advance that the world trade center was going to collapse.
And newly-released tapes of firefighters and other emergency personnel show that New York's Office of Emergency Management told a handful of people that the twin towers were going to collapse BEFORE any building had actually collapsed. For example, a paramedic testified that, before ANY of the world trade center buildings had collapsed, the following occurred:
John came to me and said you need to go find Chief Ganci and relay the following message: that the buildings have been compromised, we need to evacuate, they're going to collapse . . . .

Japan's government is pushing for the passage of an anti-conspiracy law with potentially far-reaching consequences.

Called the Kyoubouzai Hoan (conspiracy or collusion law), the legislation appears headed for passage in the diet (parliament) as soon as next week.

In its present form, it could result in Japanese citizens being detained or punished for merely agreeing with one another.
In combination with another statute that permits detention without charge, the new law could have a chilling effect on civil liberties, including freedoms of speech and assembly and the right to organize.
Domestic critics of the plan say it evokes comparison with the
pre-World War II Peace Preservation Law, which made opposing the war a thought crime. The proposed statute is a vaguely worded, two-sentence amendment to an existing law. It defines "conspiracy" as an agreement, whether overt or tacit, fanciful or earnest, between two or more people that might be construed as planning to violate any statute for which the minimum sentence is four years or more. There are currently 619 such statutes + more could be added by changing the minimum sentence guidelines.
Lawyers say that a husband and wife imagining nefarious ways to get back at their landlord for raising their rent fit the amendment's definition of a "group" planning criminal activity. Labor-union members brainstorming ways to resist harsh workplace practices could be held for colluding to violate laws that prohibit interfering with business activity. Teens discussing how to hot-wire cars could be held on conspiracy charges even if they did not attempt to act on their knowledge.
Simply belonging to a group or being in the same room where such conversations take place could make a person subject to the new law. No crime need be actually carried out for the police to detain suspects. Failing to report overheard conspiratorial talk could be construed collusion.
In the postwar era, Japanese law has generally punished only crimes actually committed or attempted. In cases such as murder or arson, prison time is sometimes given to accomplices who knowingly provide weapons or gasoline. However, punishment for conspiracy alone has been limited to rare cases of sedition.
The statute promises co-conspirators who reveal plans to the police reduced sentences or immunity from prosecution. People fear the new law would encourage self-censorship or spying in non-profit organizations, churches, labor unions + political groups. Constitutional guarantees of freedom of speech and assembly, as well as protections against searches and seizures, could be rendered null. Various forms of cyber-communication could be mined for incriminating agreements.
Much would depend on enforcement. Japan's police have a well-documented tendency to assume the guilt of those detained and have been known to conduct lengthy interrogations aimed at extracting confessions, rather than exerting themselves in pursuit of corroborative evidence. New detention facilities currently under construction give domestic observers pause to consider the government's motives for bringing this law now. The ruling party's smug reluctance to acknowledge the amendment's shortcomings or extend debate on the matter is also cause for concern.
The rationale for the legislation is that Japan is a signatory to a United Nations treaty designed to stop international organized criminal activity. But the draft amendment makes no mention of the treaty, which Japan's UN representatives originally opposed as unnecessary. A Kyoto student group used Japan's version of the US Freedom of Information Act to get the transcripts of the committee that drafted the amendment. They reportedly received pages in which most of the text had been blackened out.
Japan already has domestic laws against organized criminal groups. The new conspiracy provision raises the specter that much daily speech and activity could be criminalized or made subject to police scrutiny, if not immediately, then at some time in the future.
Japan should reflect on the historical lesson that threats born of free thought and speech are nothing compared with the corrosive power of unchecked authority. One need look no further than Guantanamo Bay or Japan's own history for persuasive examples of why this amendment is unnecessary.

"The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) reports the discovery of an extra-solar planet called XO-1b, which orbits a dim star in Corona Borealis every 4 days.

To find it, the brightness of several thousand stars were regularly scanned using two mini-telescopes in Hawaii. This equipment was built using commercial hardware: two digital cameras, attached to telephoto camera lenses on a robotic equatorial mount. A team of amateur astronomers helped with their own equipment to discard or confirm dozens of suspected transits."

"APPROVAL" The usage of the word "approval" is the major change here to the existing hijacking response procedures.

While the text of the document tries to link this "approval" to the previous orders "DODD 3025.15," the approval is now required BEFORE providing any assistance at all. Previously, approval would be required to respond to a situation with lethal force. This June 1st update to the orders stopped all military assistance in its tracks UNTIL approval from Donald Rumsfeld (the "Secretary of Defense") could be granted -- which, by his own admission, it was not. Rumsfeld claimed total ignorance of the inbound aircraft that attacked the Pentagon (on the opposite side of the building complex, where a construction project had been underway) .* In this manner, fighter planes were held up from immediately responding to the hijacked commercial jets on 11.Sep.2001. The flight base commanders were ordered by the June 1st "Joint Chiefs of Staff Instruction" to wait for "approval" from the Secretary of Defense before they could respond to hijackings, where they would have routinely responded in the past.

** EDIT **
I was thinking about it over lunch. There is one possibility I hadn't considered. However, it's quite an unthinkable possibility as it makes zero sense. But, none the less, this could be a reason.
Maybe the cameras on the Pentagon missed it. Not sure how, it's a one in a billion chance, but, maybe they did just, well, miss it. Hell, it's also possible the cameras aren't even real. Unlikely, horribly unlikely. But I will accept it's possibility. The fact remains that the other cameras as well, may have simply, missed it. There could be 84 videos of nothing but noise and or, just cars driving around and then a stuttering of the camera as the shockwave hit it. I don't know. If this were true, I'm sure the Government would sincerely want to hide it from the world. "Hey guys, lets attack the Pentagon! Their cameras are fake!".
However, 84 videos were purportedly taken and two were for sure as the FBI admitted to it during a Freedom of Information Act suit (Hotel and Citgo tapes). Plus the (at least) three highly visible cameras on the roof of the Pentagon. There should be a minimum of five cameras with film from the time of impact and it stands to reason that at least one caught a glimpse of the aircraft. Then again, maybe no cameras were actually real and were all just "deterrant" cameras. Well, tapes were taken, not sure how many VCRs record off bogus cameras. But anyways.
Again, I keep my mind open to any and all possibilities. You should too!

Also, during a July 18, 2003, press briefing, White House press secretary Scott McClellan stated numerous times that the NIE had just been declassified that day. That briefing, however, took place 10 days after Libby had reportedly received word from Cheney that Bush had authorized him to disclose portions of the NIE to former New York Times reporter Judith Miller. If Bush had declassified the NIE on July 8, why was McClellan telling the press 10 days later that it had been declassified that day?

From the July 18, 2003, press briefing:

REPORTER: Scott, why did the administration put out all the information that the senior administration official put out today on the intel --

McCLELLAN: No, well, we always want to share facts with the American people. And this information was just, as of today, officially declassified + it was an opportunity to share with them some information that showed the clear and compelling case that we had for confronting the threat that Saddam Hussein posed.

Second, in the months after 9/11 all of the surviving New York City Fire Department personnel who were on the scene were interviewed. Those oral histories were recorded and withheld from the public until Aug. 15, 2005. Only after losing in court three times did the city of New York finally release them. All 503 are now posted on The New York Times Web site. Why did the city fight so hard to keep them from the public?
It turns out those oral histories reveal details about what was happening in the World Trade Center buildings that are completely inconsistent with the tale told by the commission. Dozens of firefighters and medics reported hearing, seeing and feeling explosives going off in the buildings that collapsed. Why were there explosives, very powerful explosives by all accounts, going off in the buildings? More disturbing, why was the pattern of those explosives identical in some important ways with the pattern used in a planned implosion (or controlled demolition of a building)?
The question that we all need to ask is: What is the commission covering up? Was 9/11, in fact, an inside job?"

Clocking the Movements of Atoms ScuttleMonkey
Roland Piquepaille writes "With special microscopes, scientists and engineers involved in nanotechnologies have been able to 'see' atoms for a while. But they couldn't clock the atomic response to events which typically occur in nanoseconds. Now, U.S. physicists have found a way to clock the movements of atoms at the nanometer scale. In their experiments, they were able to literally watch atoms switching positions in ferroelectric materials. Adding the dimension of time to the observation of the nanoworld could lead to easier developments of 'materials for improved memory applications in microelectronics.'"

As noted by the blogger Xymphoraupon reading a post on the Smirking Chimp site—Judicial Watch, the organization responsible for filing a FOIA request and thus bringing us earlier this week the eminently ignorable Pentagon crash video, is hooked up with Richard Mellon Scaife, billionaire bankroller of fascist neocon outfits such the American Enterprise Institute, the Hoover Institution + the Marxist turned neocon David Horowitz (right-wing propaganda machine -> https://cannonfire.blogspot.com/2007/12/war-and-sex-princeton-fraud-and.html )’s various smear operations.

Judicial Watch was created to harass and snap at the heels of Bill Clinton, a favorite pastime for the likes of Scaife and the lunatic Republican fringe now in control of Congress. “Judicial Watch, which recently released video supposedly showing a plane hitting the Pentagon, is essentially a tool of Richard Mellon Scaife, who has given 8.5 million dollars, at least, to support this organization. Though officially a watchdog group, Judicial Watch got its start by filing over 50 nuisance lawsuits against the Clintons,” the post on Smirking Chimp explains.

Regardless of the fact the latest video—so rapturously embraced by the corporate media as evidence to put the “conspiracy theorists” out to pasture—is a less than worthless distraction, the connection between Judicial Watch and Scaife, who is a documented CIA asset, puts the whole affair in context.

Scaife is connected to the CIA. “In 1973, he became the owner of Kern House Enterprises, a U.S.-registered company,” writes the
Columbia Journalism Review. “Kern House ran Forum World Features, a London-based news agency that supplied feature material to a large number of papers around the world, including at one time about thirty in the U.S.

Scaife abruptly closed down Forum in 1975, shortly before Time Out, a British weekly, published a purported 1968 CIA memorandum, addressed to then-director Richard Helms, which described Forum as a CIA-sponsored operation providing ‘a significant means to counter Communist propaganda.’ The Forum-CIA tie, which lasted into the seventies, has been confirmed by various British and American publications over the years + it was confirmed independently by a source in connection with this article.”

What must change

It is time to separate true patriots from cringing politicians.

The assertion of unchecked power by this president has created a danger to our constitutional system.

Congress must demand an independent investigation of these programs.

It must also pass a federal shield law and strengthen whistle-blower protections to preserve the only current check on governmental abuse.

It should change the federal law to prevent the abusive use of the Espionage Act, such as in the AIPAC case.

Finally, it should revamp the intelligence oversight system, which has long been viewed as a pathetic paper tiger with either little interest or ability in checking abuses.

The Framers gave us a free press as the final safety net if all other checks and balances in the three branches of government should fail.

With the failure of both parties in Congress to exercise oversight responsibilities, the importance of a free press has been vividly demonstrated.

The public now has a choice. It can live in self-imposed ignorance, or it can fight for an open society.

Not hearing about alleged crimes by your government is certainly a comfort, but not having crimes occur would be an even greater one.

Jonathan Turley is a law professor at George Washington University who has testified before Congress on both the NSA's surveillance operations + the need for a federal shield law to protect journalists.

He is a member of USA TODAY's board of contributors.

20.May 2006 Pentagon hit by flying grilled cheese sandwich, video frames show
The Pentagon wasn't hit by a Boeing 757 jetliner. It was hit by a flying grilled cheese sandwich. How do I know? I clearly saw it in the video frames released by the FBI, there on the right.

Not everybody sees the grilled cheese sandwich, I admit. Some people see a Boeing 757 jet out of the same blur...

Uncontrolled federal spending, encouraged by voters, to drive U.S. government into bankruptcy
If you have children, you may have wondered what would happen if all children were given voting rights to control the spending decisions of the household.

What if that were true across the board? What if all children in all households were given the right to vote on what kinds of things their parents...

NSA spying on phone records of innocent Americans is only surprising to the uninformed masses
The national media is in an uproar over recent revelations that the federal government, under the guise of "fighting terrorism" (whatever that means), is secretly spying on tens of millions of American citizens via their phone records. Honestly, is anyone really surprised at this? This is old news in...

President Bush's Middle East policy is without rhyme or reason. “A new
Business Week article may help explain how AT&T and BellSouth can say they didn’t help the NSA, despite the spy agency having millions of their records showing the call details of Americans using their networks.

The magazine reveals a hidden corner of the telecommunications world: a small group of companies who specialize in granting the government access to telecommunications records, conversations and real-time data on behalf of the telecom giants.” More at TPMmuckraker.
20.May 2006 In an interview last night, Bill O’Reilly asked Rumsfeld about the ongoing violence in Iraq + the hundreds of billions of dollars the U.S. has spent on the war.

Rather than answer the questions, Rumsfeld shamelessly exploited the tragedy of 9/11 to deflect them:

RUMSFELD: And there’ve always been people who have looked at the problems and they’re real problems, don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying it’s a pretty picture.

It isn’t a pretty picture. It’s a tough business + our guys over there [in Iraq] are doing an absolutely superb job and they’re proud of what they’re doing and they know that they’re making progress and they know they can’t lose over there.

O’REILLY: No, they can’t lose militarily, but it’s cost the United States taxpayer about $400 billion up this point.

RUMSFELD: Think of what 9/11 cost us. Wouldn’t you rather fight those people over there instead of fighting them here?

O’REILLY: Yes.

RUMSFELD: Think of what happened to our economy, think what happened to the stock market.

O’REILLY: Absolutely.

RUMSFELD: Think of what happened to the airlines here after 9/11.

Rumsfeld would have us believe the war in Iraq has reduced the threat of terrorism. Actually, it has turned Iraq into “the training ground for the next generation of ‘professionalized’ terrorists,” according to the National Intelligence Council, an arm of the CIA.

20.May 2006 NYT: Senators Frustrated With Lack of NSA Oversight Have ‘Inferiority Complex’ Think Progress
Today’s New York Times addresses intelligence oversight issues raised during yesterday’s hearings for Gen. Michael Hayden. According to the Times, Senators’ complaints they they are being kept in the dark about the NSA’s warrantless surveillance and telephone data-mining programs have a “
Congressional inferiority complex.” Those who questioned the lack of oversight yesterday were throwing the “Congressional equivalent of a temper tantrum.”

That’s an interesting description of the Constitutional balance of powers. In fact, as the resolution establishing the Senate Intelligence Committeepassed thirty years ago today – made clear:

it is the purpose of this resolution to establish a new select committee of the Senate … [and] it is further the purpose of this resolution to provide vigilant legislative oversight over the intelligence activities of the United States to assure that such activities are in conformity with the Constitution and laws of the United States .

The NYT report goes on to parrot the line of the Pat Roberts (R-KS), chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, that seniority dictated who was briefed on these intelligence matters:

Life in Congress is determined by seniority, so in the hierarchy of the briefed and the briefed-nots, the longest serving Intelligence Committee members came first.

Actually, that’s not the case. According to the law on these matters, the National Security Act of 1947:

The President shall ensure that the congressional intelligence committees are kept fully and currently informed of the intelligence activities of the United States.

No mention of seniority there.

Ultimately, the Chairmen of the House and Senate Intelligence Committees have decided, in consultation with the White House, which members of the Intelligence Committees should get to conduct oversight on sensitive intelligence programs. There’s no legal authority for such an action — and the practical result of it is simple: less oversight.

USA Today Editor Defends Story on NSA Program Judd
On May 11, USA Today published a story which claimed AT&T, Bell South + Verizon provided million of customer records to the National Security Agency. Since then
all three companies have issued carefully worded denials. Bell South has demanded a retraction.

Appearing on NPR, USA Today Editor-in-Chief Ken Paulson strongly defended the story:

Our sources have told us they think we got it right — they know we’ve got it right,” Paulson says. “And they reiterated that what they told us is what showed up in the newspaper.”

… “We were surprised because we had been talking to both companies for literally weeks,” Paulson says. “They knew this story was being written. They knew what we were going to say. And frankly, they took some time in deciding how to craft a response.”

That’s the critical question. If the phone companies knew about the program for weeks in advance, why did it take them days to deny their involvement? Something doesn’t add up.
20.May 2006 Former Rep. Duke Cunningham, who has admitted taking millions in bribes from defense contractors, will be fully cooperating with ongoing investigations.

That’s good news for the public and bad news for corrupt members of Congress.

Bush on Low Approval: Brushes Aside Policy Concerns, Says People Are Just ‘Unsettled’ Faiz
NBC White House correspondent David Gregory interviewed President Bush this morning on the Today Show and asked him why so many people disapprove of the job he’s doing.

Bush brushed aside the public’s concern about his policies and insisted that nearly 70 percent of Americans are simply “unsettled.” Watch it.

Transcript:

GREGORY: Let me ask you about your leadership. In the most recent survey, your disapproval rating is now one point lower than Richard Nixon’s before he resigned the presidency. You are laughing.

BUSH: I’m not laughing –

GREGORY: Why? Why do you think that is?

BUSH: Because we are at war + war unsettles people. Listen, we got a great economy. We’ve added 5.2 million jobs in the last two and a half years. People are unsettled.

GREGORY: But they’re not just unsettled sir. They disapprove of the job you’re doing.

BUSH: That’s unsettled.
20.May 2006 The House yesterday voted to repeal $7 billion in subsidies for oil companies drilling in publicly owned waters. The vote was “approved 252 to 165 over the objections of many Republican leaders,” and now goes to the Senate. “In a separate defeat for energy companies, the House voted 279 to 141 to reject a provision that would
lift a 25-year ban on oil drilling in coastal areas outside the western Gulf of Mexico.”

In the latest indication of the crushing hardships weighing on the lives of Iraqis, increasing portions of the middle class seem to be doing everything they can to leave the country. In the last 10 months, the state has issued new passports to 1.85 million Iraqis, 7 percent of the population and a quarter of the country’s estimated middle class.”

The head of a group of Federal Air Marshals says the service is badly broken ” and that it currently “cannot protect the public.” Air marshal management has reacted to the criticism by “retaliat[ing] against him, with four separate investigations, including one for misuse of his business card.”

The United Nations Committee Against Torture issued a report yesterday which called on the U.S. to “close any secret ‘war on terror’ detention facilities abroad and the Guantanamo Bay camp in Cuba.” The report also said “detainees should not be returned to any country where they could face a real risk’ of being tortured.”
20.May 2006 The Travel Industry Association of America yesterday said that high gas prices will add “$30 and $50 to the gasoline cost of a typical trip this summer.” The group also predicted that prices “will limit travel growth this summer to less than 1%.”
20.May 2006 During hearings yesterday, CIA Director nominee Gen. Michael Hayden “shed some new light” on the inception of the NSA’s warrantless surveillance program, “noting that he was asked by then-CIA Director George J. Tenet to provide a list of NSA’s capabilities after the al-Qaeda attacks, even those that Hayden believed would not be permissible under the law. Hayden suggested the scope of the program may go beyond what is publicly known.”

You get a lot more authority when the workforce doesn’t think it’s amateur hour on the top floor ,” Hayden also said yesterday in a “not-so-veiled reference to since-disappeared CIA chief Porter Goss.”

Mike Peel writes "Science Blog is reporting that NASA is seeking proposals 'for creating and managing innovative activities, events, products, services, or other types of formal or informal education methods for the purpose of disseminating information nationally about NASA's projects and programs.'" Sadly I don't think simply providing them with a list of people you want shot into space counts.

20.May 2006 Law Enforcement Requests for Net Data Multiply CowboyNeal 53 Carl Bialik from WSJ writes

"It's not just phone companies grappling with reported potentially privacy-intruding requests from the NSA and other branches of government:

Banks, Internet-service providers and other companies that possess large amounts of data on their customers say that police + intelligence agencies have been increasingly coming to them looking for tidbits of information that could help them stop everything from money launderers to pedophiles and terrorists, the Wall Street Journal reports.

From the article:

'According to AOL executives, the most common requests in criminal cases relate to crimes against children, including abuse, abductions + child pornography.

Close behind are cases dealing with identity theft and other computer crimes.

Sometimes the police requests are highly targeted and scrupulously legalistic, while other times they were seen by the company as little more than sloppy fishing expeditions.

AOL says that most requests get turned down.'"

Is Evolution Predictable? Zonk 147
"C|Net is carrying a story about some research out of Rice University.

They are exploring the possibility that we can predict the evolution of a species, given environmental factors."

From the article:

"Typically, the bacteria can continue to thrive when the temperature hits 73 degrees Celsius (163 degrees Fahrenheit).

The experimental strain of bacteria contained a mutated version of a gene that, in the naturally occurring strain of the microbe, produces a protein that made existence possible.

They then put these mutant strains in environments where the temperature rose slowly but steadily + studied how different generations coped with the changing temperature.

In the breeding that followed, millions of new mutations of the gene in question were produced, but only about 700 of those variants replicated some of the functionality of the naturally occurring gene."

Robotic Telesurgery by Remote Surgeons Zonk 121 Roland Piquepaille writes

"In a few years, telesurgery performed by multi-armed robots remotely controlled by real surgeons located hundreds or thousands of kilometers away will become commonplace.

Today, Canadian doctors from the Centre for Minimal Access Surgery (CMAS) are developing the technology for NASA.

Their goal is to build a portable robotic unit that would be used in space missions, war zones and remote areas within five years.

So far, the experiments already done in Canada and for NASA are extremely encouraging. But read more for additional details and pictures of a real surgeon controlling such a robot."

Winning (and Losing) the First Wired War Zonk 321 Noah Shachtman writes

"The Iraq war was launched on a theory: That, with the right networking gear, American armed forces could control a country with a fraction of the troops ordinarily needed.

But that equipment never made it down to the front lines, David Axe (just back from his 6th trip to Iraq) and I note in this month's Popular Science.

That's a problem, because the insurgents are using throwaway cellphones and anonymous e-mail accounts to stitch together a network of their own."

20.May 2006 UK Law May Criminalize IT Pros Zonk 381+
"More worrying news from the UK. This time, a bill meant to fight cybercrime may make it illegal to use or make available network security tools available, just because they could be used by hackers."

From the article: "Clayton cited the Perl scripting language, created by Larry Wall in 1987, as an example of a useful technology that could fall foul of the law.

'Perl is almost universally used on a daily basis to permit the Internet to function,' said Clayton. 'I doubt if there is a sysadmin on the planet who hasn't written a Perl program at some time or another.

Equally, almost every hacker who commits an offense under section 1 or section 3 of the CMA will use Perl as part of their toolkit.

Unless Larry is especially stupid + there is very little evidence for that, he will form the opinion that hackers are likely to use his Perl system.

Locking Larry up is surely not desirable.'" A note that this is equally confusing but separate from yesterday's story about the UK government wanting private encryption keys.

But this explanation of why THEY are also running the deceitful "steal the Internet" Telecom ad, written in response to our BuzzFlash series of editorials, is accurate about the ad, but extremely odd. They actually tell you not to click on the ad that they are getting paid to run, instead of just pulling the ad. Then they tell you why it is deceitful. They say their policy is not to run "blatantly misleading" ads, which is what this ad is. Of course, this all begs the question why they don't just pull it? Is there a full moon out or something? 20.May 2006 https://www.cannonfire.blogspot.com/Bout, it is said, was the arms merchant to Al Qaeda in the 1996-2001 period.

Back then, Osama and his pals assumed control of Afghanistan's airline -- yes, they had an airline -- which was called Ariana.

Ariana devoted itself to the trans-shipment of the stuff that really matters: Gold, arms + drugs.

The drugs went from Afghanistan to the United Arab Emirates + the return flights came loaded with weaponry.

The supplier of the weapons was Victor Bout, who was then operating out of the UAE.

The United States under both Clinton and Bush turned a blind eye to all this, since no-one wanted to upset an oil-producing ally.
20.May 2006
https://www.cannonfire.blogspot.com/A few days ago, Doug Farah published a terrific account of Bout's involvement in the great assault weapons heist that recently took place in Bosnia:

In one of the strangest twists of recent Bout-related events, a company in Bout’s business orbit was found to have flown several hundred thousand AK-47 assault rifles from Bosnia to Iraq,

theoretically for use by the new, U.S.-traine Iraqi army and police.

Unfortunately, there is no record of the weapons ever actually landing in Iraq, although it appears that the now-defunct air freighter, Aerocom, did make the flights.

More: So what happened?

We will likely never know. But Bout has double-dealt with all sides of every war he has supplied. He has routinely rerouted weapons shipments for his own commercial gain + that does not inspire much confidence.

Still more: There are several things wrong with the picture to begin with.

The most obvious is that Iraq did not need to import weapons, as it has a surplus.

Bosnia is supposed to be destroying weapons, not selling them.

The sales can only proceed with the permission of EUFOR, the EU-led peacekeeping body that remains in charge of much weapons issues in Bosnia.

There were many other air freighters available if this unusual weapons transfer in fact did have to happen. Why Aerocom? Why no paper work at the end?

20.May 2006 https://www.cannonfire.blogspot.com/ The obvious suggestion is that these weapons have gone to supply irregulars, either in Iraq or elsewhere. Just as obviously, Bout is working with the neocons
20.May 2006 https://www.cannonfire.blogspot.com/On a speculative note: Returning to the subject of 9/11 and drug-running, a reader made a comment that provides at least some food for thought: Hopsicker has uncovered a lot of dirt indicating that the alleged hijackers were involved in drug smuggling. I mean, an overwhelming amount of dirt - it's hard to look at it and not immediately conclude that this is what they were up to. Nor does further scrutiny indicate that Hopsicker is putting us on with any of it.
Yet, in all his years of investigations he's uncovered virtually no evidence that the alleged hijackers were involved with terrorism. Lots of drugs, but evidently no "radical jihadism". Isn't that something?
Couldn't it be possible that maybe the only thing that these guys were up to was drug smuggling? And that they were set up by, say, a former business partner who was pissed that he'd been cut out of the loop on a lucrative Afghani heroin operation + maybe a certain foreign country with an interest in generating hostility toward Muslims?

While intelligent questions need to be asked about what really happened at the Pentagon we feel that research in this context should come with the proviso that a potential trap is being laid to discredit all 9/11 research at a later date + that today's story is part of that process.

20.May 2006 https://www.counterthink.org/019388.html

It all comes down to a basic question of how do we know what we know? And unfortunately, when it comes to 9-11, the only thing we do know for sure is that the laws of physics were still operating that day + that tells us a lot about what did and didn't happen, especially with the WTC 7 building. But it will never tell us for certain what hit the Pentagon, or why. Related article

Neither will we be told why we're not being shown the full frames of all 84 confiscated video tapes. Perhaps the videos actually show a military official stealing office pens from the Pentagon + they don't want to make that public. Maybe they show a giant "X" spray-painted on the side of the Pentagon, as in, "Hit it here!" Perhaps the 84 videos were all mysteriously erased by the terrorists who don't want the FBI to study their flight path, or the FBI is so strapped for cash that it's waiting to auction them off on eBay to the highest bidder.

These are all possibilities that must be considered. Some are more likely than others.

Mass media misdirection Actually, it doesn't really matter what hit the Pentagon. This isn't the whole story. It's just a distraction to keep people from talking about the WTC 7 building -- the one that mysteriously collapsed in controlled demolition fashion due to, we're told, a couple of small office fires. The mainstream media won't touch the WTC 7 question, because there's plenty of video footage showing its controlled demolition + there's no reasonable explanation for what happened other than the use of pre-planned explosive charges. So, using the oldest magician's trick in the book -- misdirection -- the media keeps people focused on the Pentagon video frames so they won't think about WTC 7.

Out of 84 confiscated video tapes that might show what really hit the Pentagon, these few selective frames are the best they can come up with?

People will see what they want to see, I suppose.

Some people over at Fox News insist they see a Boeing 757 in these video frames. And why not? I once saw the Virgin Mary on a Mexican tortilla.

Years ago, I thought I saw Jay Leno on a pancake (before I ate it, that is). People tend to see what they are told to see, or what they're familiar with. Some folks see letters of the alphabet carved into rocks on Mars.

The heart is the inner chamber where three recesses — small rooms — form a cross. The intricate corbeled ceiling reaches a height of 20 feet, although the narrow entry passage is much lower.

Overlapping stones form a conical dome, topped by a single capstone. This ceiling has been intact more than 5,000 years and still keeps the inner chambers dry.

Construction, done without benefit of the wheel or metal tools, took more than 20 years, according to experts.

Workers dragged 200,000 tons of loose stones to the mound, digging them from the earth by hand + hauling them 30 miles to the hilltop.

Artisans carved elaborate swirls, zigzags, diamonds, spirals + other geometric designs into the stones.

Workers are said to have cut their hands, smashed fingers and feet, fell to disease and drowned in the river while creating these monuments.

The most important is Newgrange.

Carbon dating shows it to be one of the oldest man-made constructions on Earth, older than Egypt’s ancient pyramids by some 700 years + Stonehenge by 1,000.
