During his press conference yesterday, President Bush “made it clear that, for now, his idea of how to ‘put the elections behind us’ is to use the Republicans’ last two months in control of Congress to try to push through one of [his administration’s] worst ideas…: a bill that would legalize his illegal wiretapping program and gut the law that limits a president’s ability to abuse his power in this way.” The election “only spells more trouble for politicians under federal investigation ” who were voted out of office — including Sen. Condrad Burns (R-MT) and Reps. Curt Weldon (R-PA) and Katherine Harris (R-FL) — since it prompts prosecutors “to pursue more aggressively a case since the potential defendant no longer has the institution of Congress defending him or her.” “Massachusetts’ lawmakers on Thursday took a giant step toward killing a proposal to ban gay marriage in the only U.S. state where it is legal,” delaying a decision “on whether to back a constitutional amendment that would have given voters a chance to ban gay marriage.” Speaking to Democratic House leaders Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Steny Hoyer (D-MD), President Bush said yesterday that “all three of us recognize that when you win, you have a responsibility to do the best you can for the country .” Except, as the New York Times notes, there was a fourth person in the room: Vice President Dick Cheney. Because energy from the sun, although abundant, is diffuse, generating one gigawatt of power (the size of a typical utility-scale plant) using traditional photovoltaics requires a four-square-mile area of silicon, says Jerry Olson, a research scientist at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, in Golden, CO. A concentrator system, he says, would replace most of the silicon with plastic or glass lenses or metal reflectors, requiring only as much semiconductor material as it would take to cover an area the size of a typical backyard. And because decreasing the amount of semiconductor needed makes it affordable to use much more efficient types of solar cells, the total footprint of the plant, including the reflectors or lenses, would be only two to two-and-a-half square miles.'" 10.Nov.2006 Cassini Observes Hurricane-like Storm on Saturn - Zonk 58+ - Aglassis writes "The Cassini spacecraft recently observed a hurricane-like storm on the south pole of Saturn. This decision activates an earlier ruling by the Magistrate in the case that the record labels must now turn over 'all relevant documents' regarding the prices at which they sell legal downloads to online retailers + produce a witness to give a deposition by telephone on the subject. Judge Trager rejected the RIAA's claim that the defense was frivolous, pointing out that the RIAA had cited no authorities contradicting the defense, but Ms. Lindor's attorneys had cited cases and law review articles indicating that it was a valid defense. A recount might have uncovered a telling discrepancy between the electronic tallies and the paper trail, as gleaned from absentee ballots, provisionals and so forth. Perhaps Allen decided to concede early to keep national observers from studying every jot and tittle of the Virginia results. Some of those jots and tittles might have been suspicious. We see a very similar situation in this story about the strange count in the Florida 13 Congressional race. Pay attention: Democrat Christine Jennings lost to Republican Vern Buchanan by 368 votes, making it the second closest congressional race in the country. More than 18,000 voters who showed up at the polls voted in other races but not the Buchanan-Jennings race. That means nearly 13 % of voters did not vote for either candidate -- a massive undercount compared with other counties, including Manatee, which reported a 2 % undervote. Yet, according to a press aide, this Sunday’s edition of NBC’s Meet the Press will include two interviews: one with Sen. Joseph Lieberman (I-CT), an Iraq war supporter who defeated Ned Lamont (D-CT) + one with Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), who recently called for 20,000 additional U.S. troops to be sent to Iraq + who was not up for reelection 00.000.2006. In other words, the first post-election edition of Meet the Press will exclusively feature politicians who support the war in Iraq, neither of whom ran as a Democrat. [Victor Davis Hanson] I don’t see how removing the Secretary of Defense helps either the country or the Republicans, especially given the pre-election vote of confidence in his full tenure. Lincoln Chafee (R-RI), who was defeated by Democrat Sheldon Whitehouse on Tuesday, told reporters in Rhode Island on Thursday that he would continue opposing Bolton. That would deny Republicans the votes they would need to move Bolton’s nomination from the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to the full Senate.” 10.Nov.2006 Bush Will Push Bolton Nomination in Lame Duck Session - Think Progress - At today’s White House press conference, Tony Snow revealed that the White House has officially renominated John Bolton as U.N ambassador and plans to push for his confirmation during the lame duck session of Congress. Bolton, who has repeatedly failed to gain Senate confirmation, is one of Bush’s most divisive nominations. The move comes one day after Bush pledged to “to work with the new Congress in a bipartisan way.” Watch it: 00.Sep.2006 Bolton’s nomination was sent back to the White House after Sen. Lincoln Chafee (R-RI) said he had “more questions that needed to be answered.” Incoming Senate Foreign Relations chairman Joe Biden (D-DE) said yesterday that Bolton’s nomination is “going nowhere,” but previous accounts have indicated that Bush plans to again recess appoint him during the lame-duck session. Transcript: On the other hand, the readout I got from the meeting is it was primarily focused on the lame-duck session, where you’ve got a Vietnam free trade agreement that we want to get done, an Indian civil nuclear agreement that’s of great importance; obviously the budget matters, the outer continental shelf, nominations of John Bolton and also, if possible, Bob Gates and the Terrorist Surveillance Act. 10.Nov.2006 George Allen is going through a “nightmare.”-Amanda- A senior Allen staffer tells CNN that the senator is “sequestered in his home, ‘shell shocked,’ + going through ‘a nightmare,’ during this period of limbo” 10.Nov.2006 In defeat, Santorum is clear and to the point. - Think Progress - From Rick Santorum’s farewell letter: “And I did + I’m very proud of that. Here's the telling detail: In addition, absentee voters, who didn't have to use the voting machines, had only an estimated 1.8 % undervote. Touch screen voters had a bizarre 13% undervote, while paper voters had a normal undervote of less than 2%. Few things would give me more pleasure than seeing them treated exactly the way they deserve - in a humiliating and abusive way + to see a good number of them get nice juicy jail terms for their most egrigious abuses. However, they are not people unto themselves but the representatives of a huge slice of America. Sure, wingnuts may have put them over the top, but they had to have substantial support among decent citizens misguided by various factors. Treating the congressional Republicans like dirt is, in large measure, treating their constituents like dirt + that is not what we want. Much better to allow them to have a dignified voice, even if it does not amount to any power in the end. That way we avoid further alienating the decent people among their constituents. I argue otherwise: Let justice be done, though the heavens fall. Dems should not alienate the G.O.P. constituency. ( I do that, whenever I lapse into one of my riffs on rednecks, but no Democratic pol should do likewise.) The best way to entice those constituents to our side is to alienate them from the party of deceit. Ney and Cunningham need company in the Big House. And if cleaning out the congressional stables means showing a merciless attitude toward corrupt Dems, then so be it. William Jefferson must go. We need congressfolk who are as pure as the Virgin Mary in a tub of Ivory soap. 10.Nov.2006 https://www.cannonfire.blogspot.com/ Should Allen un-concede? Brad Friedman says "Make 'em prove those numbers if they can!" I quite agree. Of course, as most of you know, I suspect (based on the exit polls + on history) that Webb's margin of victory would not be so razor-thin if the vote were recounted. Or should I say "if it were recountable ?" 10.Nov.2006 https://www.spiegel.de/wirtschaft/0,1518,druck-446423,00.html Gustav Stresemann klagt Ende der zwanziger Jahre: "Das einzig Saubere an Schacht ist sein weißer Kragen." Schachts Kompetenz als Bankier indes bezweifelt kaum jemand. NEUERSCHEINUNG "Hjalmar Schacht. Aufstieg und Fall von Hitlers mächtigstem Bankier" von Christopher Kopper. Hanser Verlag, 432 Seiten; 24,90 Euro. 10.Nov.2006 Argentinien: Haftbefehl gegen iranischen Ex- Präsidenten Rafsandschani 10.Nov.2006 Kalifornien: Zug mit Tausenden Litern Kraftstoff entgleist 10.Nov.2006 Großbritannien: Geheimdienst warnt vor Terroranschlägen 10.Nov.2006 Frankfurt an der Oder: Rechte randalieren nach Gedenken an Pogromnacht 10.Nov.2006 Wahlniederlage: Bush muss mit Oppositionsmehrheit regieren 10.Nov.2006 Bankier Hjalmar Schacht: Hitlers selbstherrlicher Helfer 10.Nov.2006 Karibik: Invasion der Riesenschnecken 10.Nov.2006 US- Wahl: Letzter republikanischer Senator gesteht Niederlage ein 09.Nov.2006 You've lost in Iraq, Blair: get troops out now 28.Oct2006 Socialist Worker -by Lindsey German, convenor, Stop the War Coalition (personal capacity) "There are only bad options for the coalition from now ... www.socialistworker.co.uk/article.php?article_id=10014 09.Nov.2006 Wahlniederlage: Bush rüstet seine Irak- Rhetorik ab 10.Nov.2006 Verheerender Granatenangriff: Olmert spricht von technischem Versagen 09.Nov.2006 Aktiver Erdtrabant: Gas- Blähungen auf dem Mond 09.Nov.2006 Eskalation im Libanon: Frankreich ruft Israel nach Beinahe- Gefecht zur Ordnung 09.Nov.2006 Labour- Spendenaffäre: Blair droht Polizeiverhör 09.Nov.2006 Grundsatzurteil: Gericht beschneidet Arbeitnehmerrechte bei Massenentlassungen 09.Nov.2006 Tiergesetz: Peking führt die Ein- Hund- Politik ein 09.Nov.2006 Tackling the CO2 consequences of high-tech perspective Sun's David Douglas says computer industry should take steps to reduce emmissions. 09.Nov.2006 Former Pentagon Spokeswoman Claims Rumsfeld ‘Respected Role Of The Media’ - Amanda - According to Pentagon spokeswoman Torie Clarke, the media respected Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld because he respected them: “Reporters often told me that he raised the levels of their performances ,” says…Clarke. “He forced them to be more precise in the way they asked questions.” She says he obviously respected the role of the media in society . In reality, Rumsfeld’s tenure was characterized by severe restrictions on press freedom. He attacked news reports critical of President Bush’s policies “nonsense” and “exaggerated.” In June, the Pentagon “shut down access entirely” to the Guantanamo Bay prison. Journalists covering the suicides had their clearances revoked and were immediately flown back to the United States. Some more lowlights: AP, 8/20/06: “They [Terrorists] are actively manipulating the media in this country . … The enemy lies constantly — almost totally without consequence.” CNN, 3/7/06: “From what I’ve seen thus far, much of the reporting in the U.S. and abroad has exaggerated the situation, according to General Casey,” Rumsfeld said. “The number of attacks on mosques, as he pointed out, had been exaggerated. The number of Iraqi deaths had been exaggerated.” AP, 12/5/05: Rumsfeld also delivered a broadside against the media, saying that in the present era of the 24-hour new cycle, events in Iraq may be reported too quickly and without context + at times with little substantiation . “A lie moves around the world at the speed of light,” he said, stressing there is a “jarring contrast between what the American people are reading and hearing about Iraq and the views of the Iraqi people.” According to Reporters Without Borders, the United States is now ranked 53rd on its global press freedom index, dropping from 17th place 00.000.2002. 09.Nov.2006 RFID Passport Security "Poorly Conceived" - kdawson 4 - tonk writes, "European expert researchers on identity and identity management summarize their findings from an analysis of passports with RFID and biometrics — Machine Readable Travel Documents or MRTDs — and recommend corrective measures that 'need to be adopted by stakeholders in governments and industry to ameliorate outstanding issues... By failing to implement an appropriate security architecture, European governments have effectively forced citizens to adopt new international MTRDs which dramatically decrease their security and privacy and increases risk of identity theft. Simply put, the current implementation of the European passport utilizes technologies and standards that are poorly conceived for its purpose.' The European experts therefore come to similar conclusions as the Data Privacy and Integrity Advisory Committee of the US Department of Homeland Security in a draft report, which seems to be delayed." 09.Nov.2006 DeLay Blasts Gates Nomination, Claims He Wants To ‘Negotiate With Terrorists’ - Faiz - In his previous writings and speeches, Defense Secretary nominee Robert Gates has been among the many national security experts who recognize there are no good military options for Iran. In the summer of 2004, Gates + former national security adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski co-chaired a task force sponsored by the Council on Foreign Relations that argued for opening a dialogue with Iran, a position Bush has so far rejected. For that reason, the right wing is angered over the Gates nomination. Frank Gaffney said subscribing to Gates’ ideas would “engender strategic perils the United States can ill-afford.” Last night on Hannity, former Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-TX) claimed Gates would “negotiate with terrorists,” and criticized President Bush for not picking a nominee that would satisfy “those of us that have supported him and supported his leadership in fighting this war.” Watch it: Transcript: I have a little different concern about Robert Gates. He is from the Brzezinski, Scowcroft, the James Baker ilk. He made a speech a couple years ago talking about how we should negotiate with terrorists, negotiate with Iran. I’m worried about his worldview. If the President is going to work with the Democrats, I want the President to tell those of us that have supported him and supported his leadership in fighting this war and winning this war that we’re not going to see a war run by consensus and committee like we did in Korea and Vietnam and Central America. 09.Nov.2006 Dobson would like to counsel Haggard, doesn’t have time. - Nico - “Citing a lack of time, Focus on the Family founder James Dobson withdrew Tuesday from the team overseeing counseling for the Rev. Transcript: I think the Iraqis have got to step up and at least try to fight for their democracy, instead of being this crazy country of Shiia against Sunni — I don’t ever want to hear Shiia and Sunni again. 09.Nov.2006 18 Months Ago, SecDef Nominee Gates Suggested U.S. Withdrawal ‘In A Year or Two’ - Judd - Yesterday, President Bush nominated former CIA Director Robert Gates to replace Donald Rumsfeld as Secretary of Defense. Speaking at the Leon Panetta institute in May 2005, Gates expressed hope for a relatively rapid withdrawal of U.S. troops: We all hope that it will be quick. That in a year or two the — this government in Iraq will be secure enough that they will be able to invite us to leave and we can do so, leaving behind us a government that can survive and that will be very different from what preceded it. That was 18 months ago. Since that time, Iraq has formed a government. Gates has also been serving on the Iraq Study Group. The LA Times reports that group may recommend “withdrawing American troops in phases.” 09.Nov.2006 November 9, 2006 - Think Progress - Incoming Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) promised to press forward with an ambitious agenda “that includes an increase of $2.10 an hour in the minimum wage.” Her agenda for the first “100 hours” of Congress is filled with items that, “though opposed by Bush, should attract near-universal approval from Democrats and could even win some Republican votes.” Read about the agenda here. Defense Secretary nominee Robert Gates “apparently holds a view on the highly sensitive subject of relations with Iran that hasn’t been embraced by all his new colleagues in the Bush administration.” In a report entitled “Iran: Time for a New Approach,” he and former NSA Zbigniew Brzezinski co-chaired a task force that argued for opening a dialogue with Iran . A day after Michigan approved an initiative to ban affirmative action, University of Michigan president Mary Sue Coleman pledged to “consider every legal option available” to continue to fight for diversity on campus. Opponents of the proposition also “filed a federal lawsuit challenging the measure as unconstitutional.” Incoming Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Joe Biden (D-DE), said yesterday that John Bolton’s troubled nomination as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations is “going nowhere.” He added, “I never saw a real enthusiasm (for Bolton’s nomination) on the Republican side to begin with. There’s none on our side.” A federal judge ruled the Center for Reproductive Rights could “ subpoena more than three years of Plan B-related communications between the White House’s domestic-policy office” and FDA officials. The documents could “determine whether the White House interfered with the FDA’s handling of a request by manufacturer Barr Pharmaceuticals Inc. to allow sales without prescriptions.” Iraqi government corruption could amount to $4 billion a year, over 10 % of the national income, according to the Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction. Much of that money “frequently goes out to fund criminal militias or insurgents.” Iraq’s parliament yesterday voted to extend the country’s state of emergency for 30 more days, “a recognition that Iraqi security forces and their U.S. allies are still far from bringing violence in check.” “After tumbling from the pinnacle of the American evangelical movement amid allegations he snorted meth and cavorted with a male prostitute,” former National Association of Evangelicals president Ted Haggard will undergo a “rehabilitation process that could last three to five years.” “There will be advice, confrontation and rebuke from ‘godly men’ appointed to oversee” Haggard’s spiritual “restoration.” And finally: Rummie resigns, Onion-style. The satirical news site The Onion caught the tail end of Rumsfeld’s resignation speech yesterday: “Years ago, I decided to bog this great nation down in an extended, grueling foreign occupation + I’m happy to say that’s exactly what I’ve done. … Each of my actions - from undersupplying troops with body armor to focusing on capturing Saddam Hussein while Osama bin Laden remained free - has led America inexorably toward our current state of extreme crisis. He allegedly performed the songs on the harmonica with a female pianist at the bar he operated between August and September this year.'
