In that capacity he helped develop options in dealing with the Iran-Iraq war, which eventually involved into a secret intelligence liaison relationship with Saddam Hussein's Iraq. A recount might have uncovered a telling discrepancy between the electronic tallies and the paper trail, as gleaned from absentee ballots, provisionals and so forth. Perhaps Allen decided to concede early to keep national observers from studying every jot and tittle of the Virginia results. Some of those jots and tittles might have been suspicious.
We see a very similar situation in this story about the strange count in the Florida 13 Congressional race. Pay attention:
Democrat Christine Jennings lost to Republican Vern Buchanan by 368 votes, making it the second closest congressional race in the country.
More than 18,000 voters who showed up at the polls voted in other races but not the Buchanan-Jennings race.
That means nearly 13 % of voters did not vote for either candidate -- a massive undercount compared with other counties, including Manatee, which reported a 2 % undervote. Here's the telling detail: In addition, absentee voters, who didn't have to use the voting machines, had only an estimated 1.8 % undervote. Touch screen voters had a bizarre 13% undervote, while paper voters had a normal undervote of less than 2%. So startling a difference between the paper vote and the compu-vote constitutes prima facie evidence of vote fraud.

We see a very similar situation in this story about the strange count in the Florida 13 Congressional race. Pay attention:
Democrat Christine Jennings lost to Republican Vern Buchanan by 368 votes, making it the second closest congressional race in the country.
More than 18,000 voters who showed up at the polls voted in other races but not the Buchanan-Jennings race.
That means nearly 13 % of voters did not vote for either candidate -- a massive undercount compared with other counties, including Manatee, which reported a 2 % undervote. Here's the telling detail: In addition, absentee voters, who didn't have to use the voting machines, had only an estimated 1.8 % undervote. Touch screen voters had a bizarre 13% undervote, while paper voters had a normal undervote of less than 2%. So startling a difference between the paper vote and the compu-vote constitutes prima facie evidence of vote fraud.

Few things would give me more pleasure than seeing them treated exactly the way they deserve - in a humiliating and abusive way + to see a good number of them get nice juicy jail terms for their most egrigious abuses. However, they are not people unto themselves but the representatives of a huge slice of America. Sure, wingnuts may have put them over the top, but they had to have substantial support among decent citizens misguided by various factors. Treating the congressional Republicans like dirt is, in large measure, treating their constituents like dirt + that is not what we want. Much better to allow them to have a dignified voice, even if it does not amount to any power in the end. That way we avoid further alienating the decent people among their constituents. I argue otherwise: Let justice be done, though the heavens fall.
Dems should not alienate the G.O.P. constituency. ( I do that, whenever I lapse into one of my riffs on rednecks, but no Democratic pol should do likewise.) The best way to entice those constituents to our side is to alienate them from the party of deceit. Ney and Cunningham need company in the Big House.
And if cleaning out the congressional stables means showing a merciless attitude toward corrupt Dems, then so be it. William Jefferson must go. We need congressfolk who are as pure as the Virgin Mary in a tub of Ivory soap.

09.Nov.2006 Former Pentagon Spokeswoman Claims Rumsfeld ‘Respected Role Of The Media’ - Amanda - According to Pentagon spokeswoman Torie Clarke, the media respected Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld because he respected them: “Reporters often told me that he raised the levels of their performances ,” says…Clarke. “He forced them to be more precise in the way they asked questions.” She says he obviously respected the role of the media in society . In reality, Rumsfeld’s tenure was characterized by severe restrictions on press freedom. He attacked news reports critical of President Bush’s policies “nonsense” and “exaggerated.” In June, the Pentagon “shut down access entirely” to the Guantanamo Bay prison. Journalists covering the suicides had their clearances revoked and were immediately flown back to the United States. Some more lowlights: AP, 8/20/06: “They [Terrorists] are actively manipulating the media in this country . … The enemy lies constantly — almost totally without consequence.” CNN, 3/7/06: “From what I’ve seen thus far, much of the reporting in the U.S. and abroad has exaggerated the situation, according to General Casey,” Rumsfeld said. “The number of attacks on mosques, as he pointed out, had been exaggerated. The number of Iraqi deaths had been exaggerated.” AP, 12/5/05: Rumsfeld also delivered a broadside against the media, saying that in the present era of the 24-hour new cycle, events in Iraq may be reported too quickly and without context + at times with little substantiation . “A lie moves around the world at the speed of light,” he said, stressing there is a “jarring contrast between what the American people are reading and hearing about Iraq and the views of the Iraqi people.” According to Reporters Without Borders, the United States is now ranked 53rd on its global press freedom index, dropping from 17th place 00.000.2002.

In the summer of 2004, Gates + former national security adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski co-chaired a task force sponsored by the Council on Foreign Relations that argued for opening a dialogue with Iran, a position Bush has so far rejected. For that reason, the right wing is angered over the Gates nomination. Frank Gaffney said subscribing to Gates’ ideas would “engender strategic perils the United States can ill-afford.” Last night on Hannity, former Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-TX) claimed Gates would “negotiate with terrorists,” and criticized President Bush for not picking a nominee that would satisfy “those of us that have supported him and supported his leadership in fighting this war.” Watch it: Transcript: I have a little different concern about Robert Gates. He is from the Brzezinski, Scowcroft, the James Baker ilk. He made a speech a couple years ago talking about how we should negotiate with terrorists, negotiate with Iran. I’m worried about his worldview. If the President is going to work with the Democrats, I want the President to tell those of us that have supported him and supported his leadership in fighting this war and winning this war that we’re not going to see a war run by consensus and committee like we did in Korea and Vietnam and Central America.

That in a year or two the — this government in Iraq will be secure enough that they will be able to invite us to leave and we can do so, leaving behind us a government that can survive and that will be very different from what preceded it. That was 18 months ago. Since that time, Iraq has formed a government. Gates has also been serving on the Iraq Study Group.
