05.Nov.2006 War simulation in 1999 pointed out Iraq invasion problems

A series of secret U.S. war games in 1999 showed that an invasion and post-war administration of Iraq would require 400,000 troops, nearly three times the number there now.
And even then, the games showed, the country still had a chance of dissolving into chaos.

Although Times editorials tend to agree with Democrats on national policy, we have proudly and consistently endorsed a long line of moderate Republicans, particularly for the House. Our only political loyalty is to making the two-party system as vital and responsible as possible. That is why things are different this year." 11/6

05.Nov.2006 https://www.cannonfire.blogspot.com/ I consider Michael Ledeen the most interesting rascal in the rogues' gallery of neoconservatism + Kos writer Meteor Blades has caught the man in a extraordinarily bold lie.
It seems that Ledeen is yet another necon pretending that he never supported the Iraq misadventure. "I opposed the military invasion of Iraq before it took place," writes ML in the National Review Online. Alas, the gods of Google have left us ineradicable proof that Ledeen did indeed offer wholehearted support to Dubya's blunder. From a
2002 interview: Question #2: Okay, well if we are all so certain about the dire need to invade Iraq, then when do we do so?
Ledeen: Yesterday. The man's a proven liar. Keep that fact in mind if he should ever deny membership in P2, or if he should claim that he had nothing to do with "Bulgarians shot the Pope" hoax.

From the article: "Fishermen captured the four-finned dolphin alive off the coast of Wakayama prefecture (state) in western Japan on Oct. 28 + alerted the nearby Taiji Whaling Museum, according to museum director Katsuki Hayashi. Fossil remains show dolphins and whales were four-footed land animals about 50 million years ago and share the same common ancestor as hippos and deer. Scientists believe they later transitioned to an aquatic lifestyle and their hind limbs disappeared. Whale and dolphin fetuses also show signs of hind protrusions but these generally disappear before birth. "

The railcars could be enclosed to provide personnel protection. Each railcar can hold four to six people. The rail would follow the ML tower vertically down to the pad surface, then turn and continue close to the ground to the safety bunker. A passive magnetic and friction braking system will decelerate the cars at the tracks end as well as prevent the cars from hitting each other."

05.Nov.2006 Baghdad is Surrounded: “The American Era in the Middle East has ended” -By Mike Whitney
After 3 and a half years of violence and mayhem we still know as little about the Iraqi resistance as we did in March 2003. This is inexcusable. In addition, there’s been no attempt to engage the representatives of the resistance in political dialogue. How can we possibly reach a political solution without dialogue and negotiation?

05.Nov.2006 American Prison Planet -The Bush Administration as Global Jailor -By Nick Turse

The Middle East Economic Digest states that most of these nations are interested in developing nuclear technology for the purpose of powering desalination plants. UK Has Become a "Surveillance Society" - Zonk 127 cultrhetor writes

"In a story released by the BBC, Richard Thomas, the information commissioner for Great Britain, says that fears of the nation's 'sleep-walk into a surveillance society' have become reality. Surveillance ranges from data monitoring (credit cards, mobiles, and loyalty card information), US security agencies monitoring telecommunications traffic, to key stroke logging at work. From the article, the report 'predicts that by 2016 shoppers could be scanned as they enter stores, schools could bring in cards allowing parents to monitor what their children eat + jobs may be refused to applicants who are seen as a health risk.' The report's co-author, Dr. David Murakami-Wood, told BBC News that, compared to other Western nations, Britain was the 'most surveilled country.' He goes on to note: 'We really do have a society which is premised both on state secrecy and the state not giving up its supposed right to keep information under control while, at the same time, wanting to know as much as it can about us.'"

04.Nov.2006 Hoekstra Pushed For Publication of Sensitive Nuclear Documents, Blames New York Times, IAEA - Amanda

Yesterday Rep. Peter Hoekstra (R-MI), chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, blamed the New York Times and the IAEA for the leak of sensitive Iraqi documents — a “nuclear primeron how to build an atomic bomb — on a public government website:

Concerns by the New York Times and the IAEA prompted the government to shut down the website. The IAEA, “fearing that the information could help states like Iran develop nuclear arms,” privately protested last week to the American ambassador. The Bush administration shut down the site on Thursday evening, only after the New York Times “asked about complaints from weapons experts and arms-control officials.”

Hoekstra, on the other hand, was responsible for making that information public in the first place. Last November, he and Sen. Pat Roberts (R-KS) wrote to Director of National Intelligence John Negroponte and asked him to the post the Iraqi documents.

Hoekstra is now claiming that he has “always been clear that the Director of National Intelligence should take whatever steps necessary to withhold sensitive information.” But in a press release on April 18 — approximately a month after the first documents were made public — Hoekstra issued a news release with no such reservations. He instead acknowledged that posting the information carried “risks, but such risks are minimal.”

Oceans Empty by 2048? - Zonk 405 F34nor writes to mention a CBS news

article about the depopulation of ocean species. According to a study by a scientist in Halifax, Nova Scotia and assisted by research from all around the world, the world's oceans will be emptied of large lifeforms by 2048. From the record: "Already, 29% of edible fish and seafood species have declined by 90% -- a drop that means the collapse of these fisheries. But the issue isn't just having seafood on our plates. Ocean species filter toxins from the water. They protect shorelines. And they reduce the risks of algae blooms such as the red tide. 'A large and increasing proportion of our population lives close to the coast; thus the loss of services such as flood control and waste detoxification can have disastrous consequences,' Worm and colleagues say."

September in Deutschland zwischenlanden.

The right-wing media — including Matt Drudge, Rush Limbaugh, and Fox Newshave launched a baseless campaign (already picked up by MSNBC) suggesting that House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has gone into hiding before Tuesday’s election.

Here’s an image from Fox News moments ago:

In fact, as ThinkProgress has documented, Pelosi has been featured in numerous public and media appearances recently. Two days ago, she appeared at a public rally with former President Clinton, portions of which aired on television + in a feature interview on CNN. She also appeared in interviews on CNBC’s Kudlow & Company on 10/24, ABC’s Good Morning America and ABC’s World News Tonight on 10/26 + conducted interviews for profiles in the New York Times (10/30), Newsweek (10/23), and the Baltimore Sun (10/27).

Nancy Pelosi will continue to be in “hiding” throughout the weekend, appearing at numerous public rallies (though Pelosi has indicated that if her daughter gives birth to her sixth grandchild this weekend, she will leave the campaign trail). Here’s where she’ll be tomorrow:

1:30 p.m. Rally with Leader Pelosi, candidate Joe Sestak, Vice President Gore + Governor Rendell in Radnor, PA

3:00 p.m. Rally with Leader Pelosi, candidates Lois Murphy and Bob Casey, Senator Obama + Governor Rendell in Norristown, PA

4:30 p.m. Rally with Leader Pelosi candidate Patrick Murphy, Senator Obama + Governor Rendell in Glenside, PA

Prominent neocons say Iraq was a strategic blunder. - Faiz -

04.Nov.2006 Reynolds Criticizes ‘National Media People’ For Focus On Iraq - Think Progress

This morning in a taped interview on NPR, Morning Edition host Steve Inskeep repeatedly asked Rep. Tom Reynolds (R-NY) if “there needs to be some significant change in the way that the United States approaches Iraq.”

Each time, Reynolds refused to give a straight answer, stating only that “‘the commander in chief is the president,’ and that Congress has a responsibility for ‘oversight.’ Pressed for details of what should be done, he blamed ‘national media people like you’ for focusing on Iraq.”

After Inskeep’s fifth attempt to get Reynolds to comment on President Bush’s stay-the-course policy, Reynolds abruptly ended the conversation, stating, “Is there any more you have? Because I’m about to walk into another meeting.” CLICK HERE TO LISTEN

The Iraq war is not an issue that is important to just “national media people” in Washington. In the latest CBS/NYTimes poll, voters identified Iraq as the single-most important issue. It garnered four times as much interest as immigration, the second most important issue.

Full transcript below:

REYNOLDS: Do I wish the approval rating in Congress was higher? Sure — for my own self esteem. I’m a Member of Congress. But all politics is local. Local races about the local issues. The issues in my district are jobs, taxes + Social Security. Some it may be transportation and infrastructure, some may be border security, some may be other issues. But –

INSKEEP: Iraq?

REYNOLDS: There’s only one race that I’m aware of that has Iraq has a center theme and that is Chris Shays’s seat in Connecticut + that’s because he wants it to be the centerpiece of his campaign.

INSKEEP: Do you anticipate that after this election, there needs to be some significant change in the way that the United States approaches Iraq?

REYNOLDS: Steve, the commander in chief is the president and I believe that the generals who run the war will look to see what type of course corrections the President, his ambassador + the generals that he summoned a few weeks ago will continue to look at where the President puts that — But as I said, the number one issue in my district is jobs, the number two is taxes, the number three issue Social Security.

INSKEEP: Does Congress have a responsibility to push the commander in chief at this time to change direction somewhat?

REYNOLDS: Congress always has a responsibility for oversight.

INSKEEP: I’m asking a much more specific answer though. Do you –

REYNOLDS: Steve, I’ve given you a specific answer. The commander in chief is the person that runs the military and is the point on a war on Iraq or any other war. Congress has oversight responsibilities + to my knowledge, it’s doing that.

INSKEEP: Let me try to put that in my own words, so that I understand it. Are you saying you trust the President to do what he will in Iraq, you’ll look afterward, but you’re not pushing him to change direction?

REYNOLDS: Now Steve, you can draw whatever conclusion. I stand by what I said. I said it twice and I want the listeners to hear what I just said twice. You’re drawing whatever conclusion you want out of it. I’ve set the discussion on Iraq. You’ve asked if in politics — I said there’s one race in the country. Many national media people like you would like to see one issue they can cover out of Washington + it just isn’t happening that way this year. Each race has its own issues, and it’s a choice between two candidates.

INSKEEP: Congressman, with all due respect, I was asking about your substantive position on an issue that the President of the United States considers one of the most important issues of our time.

REYNOLDS: You asked a question Steve, I gave you an answer. Is there any more you have? Because I’m about to walk into another meeting.

INSKEEP: That’ll do. Congressman Reynolds, thanks for taking the time.

04.Nov.2006 Bartlett Falsely Claims Saddam Had The ‘Capability’ For A Nuclear Weapons Program - Think Progress

This morning on MSNBC, White House Counselor Dan Bartlett used a New York Times report to falsely claim Saddam Hussein “had the capability and he had the know-how to” develop nuclear weapons. Watch it:

The Times report documents Iraq’s efforts to conduct nuclear research before the 1991 Persian Gulf war and prior to sanctions. Contrary to Bartlett’s claim, Iraq had no nuclear capability at the time of the U.S. invasion in March 2003. Here are the facts, as reported in the Key Findings of the Duelfer Report:

– “Saddam Husayn ended the nuclear program in 1991 following the Gulf war. ISG found no evidence to suggest concerted efforts to restart the program.”

– “Although Saddam clearly assigned a high value to the nuclear progress and talent that had been developed up to the 1991 war, the program ended and the intellectual capital decayed in the succeeding years.”

– “The former Regime had no formal written strategy or plan for the revival of WMD after sanctions.”

Transcript:

BARTLETT: Obviously, in this case, Andrea, there has been a problem because these documents went on + they reveal what many people knew, was that Saddam Hussein had the capability and was working toward a nuclear weapon program. They had the scientists and the documents.

MITCHELL: Before the first gulf war. These are dated documents, so they go back to what was discovered before the first gulf war.

BARTLETT: True, Andrea, but they didn’t lose that knowledge. They didn’t take down the scientific apparatus or the capabilities to develop that. And Charlie Duelfer and other weapons experts all said what Saddam Hussein was doing was waiting the international community out, to make sure they got the inspectors out, so that they can then restart their program. He had the capability and he had the know-how to do it. And I think that’s a stark reminder for people.

Card Blames New York Times For ‘Advertising’ Nuclear Secrets ‘To The World’ - Nico

This morning on NBC, former White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card excused the Bush administration’s role in posting nuclear weapons secrets on a public web site, and instead blamed the New York Times for having “advertised” the secrets “to the world.”

Card said “it’s important that we recognize the government is doing the right thing” and claimed the government “acted very quickly” to remove the nuclear secrets.

Watch it:

According to the Times, the nuclear secrets have been available for weeks despite an incident last spring when information on how to make tabun and sarin nerve agents had to be removed from the site. Moreover, U.S. officials were warned last week by the International Atomic Energy Association that the information available “could help states like Iran develop nuclear arms.” The web site wasn’t removed until last night, after the Times began its inquiry. Digg It! Full transcript:

LAUER: What do you make of this? Who’s gonna get the blame for this?

CARD: Well, you know, this is one of those things that John Negroponte warned us that we don’t know what’s in these documents, so these are being put out at some risk. And that was a warning he put out right when they first released the documents. We pulled them down + I think the government has acted very quickly + we’ve pulled them down. I’m a little bit concerned that the New York Times has advertised them to the world, so that more people might see them…

LAUER: What about the timing? Four days before, five days before a mid-term election this report comes out. Do you question the timing of this report?

CARD: Well, I think most things that happen just before an election are designed by someone to have an impact on the election. But I actually think it’s important that we recognize the government is doing the right thing. They shut the website down. They’re not providing information.

In an interview yesterday with a CBS affiliate in San Francisco, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R-CA) said, “I think that we should get out of [Iraq] as quickly as we can.” The governor also called for “a deadline of when we pull the troops out.”

When asked what he thought of Bush’s opposition to a deadline, Schwarzenegger said, “I think that eventually he will have to put a deadline on there. I think the American people will demand it.” Watch it: Digg It!

Transcript:

REPORTER: I want to ask you about the Iraq war. There is a new poll out today from CBS News and the New York Times that says Iraq is on everybody’s mind as they go to the polls. Even local races, state races. What’s your position on the Iraq war?

SCHWARZENEGGER: I think that we should get out of there as quickly as we can because, you know, we should have a deadline of when we pull the troops out and figure that out and work together with the government in Iraq. I think they are doing that now.

REPORTER: The President said he doesn’t want a deadline.

November 3, 2006 - Think Progress

The House ethics committee report on the Foley page scandal will not be released before Election Day. The AP notes, “The lack of a report leaves voters to sort through conflicting Republican accounts in deciding whether GOP leaders failed to protect teenagers in their care.”

A federal government web archive of Saddam-era documents, launched “under pressure from Congressional Republicans…to find new evidence of the prewar dangers posed by Saddam,” was shut down after weapons experts said some of the documents posted “could help states like Iran develop nuclear arms.”

U.S. Sgt. Santos Cardona, a military dog handler at Abu Ghraib prison who was “convicted in May of dereliction of duty and aggravated assault,” is being sent back to serve in Iraq.

Under a new policy, children born in the United States to undocumented immigrants with low incomes will no longer be automatically entitled to health insurance through Medicaid.” Dr. Jay E. Berkelhamer, president of the American Academy of Pediatrics, said the new policy “punishes babies who, according to the Constitution, are citizens because they were born here.”

More top conservatives try to back away from Bush’s Iraq policy. House leader Rep. Deborah Pryce (R-OH) told CNN yesterday, “What’s happening in Iraq is not a direct reflection on me.”

Four years after Oregon raised its minimum wage , the Wall Street Journal examines conservative claims that it would hurt the economy and finds “none of these fears materialized.” Private, nonfarm payrolls and wages are up + “job growth is strong in industries employing many minimum-wage workers.”

America is now seen as a threat to world peace by its closest neighbours and allies,” according to a new survey of Great Britain, Mexico, Israel + Canada “that reveals just how far the country’s reputation has fallen among former supporters since the invasion of Iraq.”

The world’s supply of seafood — the major protein source for nearly one in six people — could be gone by 2048 if current trends continue.” The number of ocean fish, seafood and plant species “that had already ‘collapsed’ reached 29 % in 2003, up from about 13 % in 1980.”

The Department of Veterans Administration confirmed the third theft of personal data from a VA facility in less than a year. A computer containing the personal data of military veterans was stolen in September from the agency’s Manhattan hospital, but VA officials sent out a letter to veterans only within the past two weeks.

And finally: Michelangelo’s David, the Sistine Chapel, and Baghdad. “Every great work of art goes through messy phases while it is in transition,” U.S. Maj. Gen. Caldwell told reporters yesterday in Baghdad. “A lump of clay can become a sculpture. Blobs of paint become paintings which inspire.” “I’m not making this up,” the Chicago Tribune’s Frank James wrote about the comment, “he actually said this.”

04.Nov.2006 UK Report Proposes Changes to IP Laws - Zonk 63 NKJV writes

"A new report from the Institute for Public Policy Research, a UK think tank, has some concrete suggestions on how to reform the UK's dated intellectual property laws. The starting point for its deliberations is the notion that knowledge is both a commodity and a public good + it recommends that the UK move from a model where knowledge is 'an asset first and a public resource second' to one where knowledge is primarily a public resource and secondarily an asset. Is that an anti-business attitude? The report's authors don't think so."

"New Scientist reports that Scripps Research Institute scientists have found that lowering the body temperature of mice by just 0.5C extends their lifespan by around 15%. In this study mice with a defect in their lateral hypothalamus, which has the side effect of cooling body temperature, not only lived longer but also ate normal amounts."

U.S. Publishes Guide To Building Atom Bombs To Web - Zonk 239 Jeff writes

"The New York Times is reporting that the feds have shut down the 'Operation Iraqi Freedom Document Portal' due to concerns from weapons experts that the 'papers give detailed information on how to build nuclear firing circuits and triggering explosives, as well as the radioactive cores of atom bombs.' One diplomat is quoted as saying, 'If you had this, it would short-circuit a lot of things.' Indexes to older (less sensitive) documents (and some html from pdfs) are still cached at Google today. Rep. Pete Hoekstra pushed for the public release of the archive to help determine 'whether Saddam Hussein destroyed Iraq's weapons of mass destruction or hid or transferred them'. Critics have said the archive was created to perpetuate misinformation about WMDs."

File Sharing Ruled Legal In Spain - Zonk 119 stupid_is writes

"As a follow-up to a previous discussion a judge in Spain has ruled that under Spanish law a person who downloads music for personal use can not be punished or branded a criminal. This seems to be a teeny bit clearer than the first article, which points out that downloading is a civil + not criminal, offense for individuals. The Spanish recording industry federation Promusicae is predictably a bit peeved + says it will appeal against the decision." From the article: "The state prosecutor's office and two music distribution associations had sought a two year sentence against the man, who downloaded songs and then allegedly offered them on a CD through email and chat rooms. However, there was no direct proof he made money from selling the CDs. Justice Minister Juan Fernando Lopéz Aguilar says Spain is drafting a new law to abolish the existing right to private copies of material. Due to different regulatory regimes in Europe, the proceedings against file sharers differ greatly in each country. However, most European judges tend to take a harder stance on file sharing. Twenty two people in Finland were fined €427,000 last week for illegally sharing movies, music, games and software, while courts in Sweden also fined two men who had downloaded movies and music for personal use."

The United States promised a democracy when the Civil Rights Act became law in 1964 and the Voting Rights Act the following year finally ended slavery. For the next decade, the civil-rights movement joined the great popular movement to end the slaughter in Vietnam + Congress legislated to restrain the CIA's secretive parallel power. It was a fleeting intermission.

In addition, there’s been no attempt to engage the representatives of the resistance in political dialogue. How can we possibly reach a political solution without dialogue and negotiation?

03.Nov.2006 White House Launches Campaign To Politicize Saddam Verdict Ahead of Midterm Elections - Nico

The verdict in the trial of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein was recently postponed until November 5, two days before the U.S. midterm elections. Media Matters has questioned whether “the date for the verdict’s release [was] set to provide maximum political benefit for the administration and congressional Republicans.”

Asked today whether the verdict would be a factor in the U.S. elections, White House Press Secretary Tony Snow said, “You are absolutely right, it will be a factor.” Snow said the verdict “may fit into a larger narrative about an Iraqi government that has been doing what the president has said all along.” He portrayed the decision as yet another turning point for Iraq. “This is a benchmark episode, where the Iraqi people are taking control of their own destiny,” he said.

Watch it:

The day Hussein was captured, President Bush addressed the nation. He said the capture “marks the end his of the road…for all who bullied and killed in his name.” For ordinary Iraqis, it was “further assurance that the torture chambers and the secret police are gone forever.” Bush said, “A hopeful day has arrived. All Iraqis can now come together and reject violence and build a new Iraq.”

In the three years since, all of these claims have come undone. Since Hussein was captured:

2,358 U.S. soldiers have died , roughly 85 % of the total U.S. fatalities during the Iraq war.
– Iraq has “become the ?cause celebre? for jihadists , breeding a deep resentment of US involvement in the Muslim world and cultivating supporters for the global jihadist movement.” [
Link]
– Torture in Iraq “may be worse now than it was under Saddam Hussein , with militias, terrorist groups and government forces disregarding rules on the humane treatment of prisoners,” the U.N.’s anti-torture chief said in September. [
Link]
– Prospects for the “new Iraq” have fallen sharply. The 10-member bipartisan commission that is charged with assessing Bush’s Iraq strategy has reportedly “ruled out the prospect for victory.” [

KUDLOW: Tony Snow, thanks for coming on the program. Let me begin with this question: Is there a November surprise come out of Iraq? Will the Iraqi court find a guilty verdict for Saddam Hussein and a possible death sentence? Rumors are flying that it’s going to come down this Sunday, November 5th — which of course will dominate the political news cycle, in the last two days in the midterms. Tony what can you tell us about this?

SNOW: Larry that is when this verdict is scheduled to come down. I’m not going to tell you what it will be, because I don’t know. But you are absolutely right, it will be a factor. But you know what, it may fit into a larger narrative about an Iraqi government that has been doing what the president has said all along which is developing the capacity to sustain itself, defend itself and govern itself and to help us out on the war on terror. And you have an Iraqi economy, as you know, that is getting stronger and the military is getting stronger and more assertive in going after terrorist elements and separatist elements within their midst and those are the kinds of things. Slowly but surely you are seeing come to fruition. It is a tough war. The enemy does not want to lose, they are dug in and they are going to fight to the finish but this important thing is you do see signs within Iraq that the government itself is taking steps to make sure there is no new era of Saddam Hussein and know new era of terror.

KUDLOW: Tony, getting Saddam Hussein on the sentence, a possible death sentence, for all of the hundreds of thousands of atrocities for which he is directly responsible. Will that be used in the last 48 hours, as an important justification for the war in iraq?

SNOW: No. i mean, you are no going to use a court verdict as a justification. The justification, though, a little bit of it lies on what you just described which is a Saddam Hussein who killed tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of his countrymen, simply because he didn’t like them or they disagreed with him. What you now have is an Iraq where people are fighting and working actively to bid a democracy where they don’t have to worry about that kind of reign of terror in the future. This is a benchmark episode, where the Iraqi people are taking control of their own destiny and saying to the world, we will not be — we are going to be free, trust us, watch usu, help us and that is what the United States is doing and that’s what we are going to do. We are going to finish the job.

03.Nov.2006 Boehner: The Military’s Transformation Under Rumsfeld Has Been ‘Nothing Short Of Remarkable’ - Amanda

In the past few days, House Majority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) has vigorously defended Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, saying that he is the “best thing that’s happened to the Pentagon in 25 yearsand is doing a “marvelous job.”

Yesterday on CNN, Boehner stated that under the Bush administration, the military has undergone a “remarkable” transformation and “there’s only person in America who could have brought about that transformation and that’s Donald Rumsfeld.” Watch it:

In reality, Rumsfeld’s mismanagement has pushed the all-volunteer force perilously close to its breaking point. Some highlights of Rumsfeld’s “remarkable” leadership:

The military’s equipment is outdated, below standards: Forty-two % of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans said their equipment was below the military standard of being 90 % operational. Thirty-five % said their Humvees and trucks were not up-armored when they arrived in-country.

The military faces severe manpower shortages: Currently, the Army has “close to zero combat-ready brigades in reserveand the National Guard is “in an even more dire situation than the active Army.” Sixty-three % of all Iraq and Afghanistan veterans believe the Army and Marine Corps are overextended.

Full transcript below:

There are a lot of people who want to blame what’s happening in Iraq on Donald Rumsfeld. But when you look at the transformation that our military has been through, it’s nothing short of remarkable. And I think there’s only person in America who could have brought about that transformation and that’s Donald Rumsfeld.

03.Nov.2006 Bush Laments ‘Tone’ In Washington, Says His Opponents Want Terrorists To Win - Judd

On Tuesday, in an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, President Bush said the worst thing about being President was the “tone” in Washington, saying that it “has gotten ugly.” Bush said that he had stayed above the fray, noting “I really don’t think it’s fitting for the president to drag the presidency into that kind of a mudslinging.” Watch it:

This kind of high-minded rhetoric is a staple of President Bush’s election-year stump speech. Expect more of it as the President campaigns in Nevada, Montana and Missouri over the next two days.

BUSH: Let me start with the least. I don’t like the tone in Washington, D.C. I feel like that the politics has gotten ugly, and that tends to discourage people around the country. And that’s just too bad.

I would hope in my last two years I can — and, by the way, I’ve never really resorted to name-calling. And I’m not trying to say, well, you know, I’m innocent and everybody else is guilty. That’s not what I’m trying to say. But I understand that it’s one thing to disagree with a person, but it’s another thing to have to resort to kind of shameless name- calling. And I really don’t think it’s fitting for the president to drag the presidency into that kind of a mudslinging.

On the other hand, it’s important for the president defends what he believes, you know, in a way that brings honor to the office. But Washington’s a lot — it’s just too — it’s too political in many ways.

Clip 2

BUSH: However they put it, the Democrat approach in Iraq comes down to this: The terrorists win and America loses.

[Snip]

BUSH: In all these vital measures for fighting the war on terror, the Democrats in Washington follow a simple philosophy: Just say no. When it comes to listening in on the terrorists, what’s the Democratic answer? Just say no. When it comes to detaining terrorists, what’s the Democrat answer?

AUDIENCE: Just say no!

BUSH: When it comes to questioning terrorists, what’s the Democrat answer?

AUDIENCE: Just say no!

BUSH: When it comes to trying terrorists, what’s the Democrat’s answer?

The program, 'Hacking Democracy,' is scheduled to debut Thursday, , five days before the 2006 U.S. midterm elections. The film claims that Diebold voting machines aren't tamper-proof and can be manipulated to change voting results. 'Hacking Democracy' is 'replete with material examples of inaccurate reporting,' says Diebold. 'We stand by the film," said a spokesman for HBO. "We have no intention of withdrawing it from our schedule. It appears that the film Diebold is responding to is not the film HBO is airing.'"

02.Nov.2006 Wikipedia and the End of Archeology - Zonk 127 - Andy Updegrove writes

"Far too much attention has been paid to whether or not the Wikipedia is accurate enough. The greater significance of the Wikipedia today + even more for those in the future, is its reality as the most detailed, comprehensive, concise, culturally-sensitive record of how humanity understands itself at any precise moment in time. Moreover, with its multiple language versions, it also demonstrates how different cultures understand the same facts, historical events and trends at the same time. Today, archaeologists are doing digs to understand how people lived only 150 years ago, making guesses based on the random bits and pieces of peoples' lives that they find In the future, that won't be necessary, as archaeologists are replaced by anthropologists that mine this treasure trove for data."

Political Mudslinging Via YouTube, MySpace - Zonk 173 "BusinessWeek takes a look at how political campaigns are taking the time-honored tradition of political mudslinging digital. One notable example: In the Virginia Senate race incumbent Republican George Allen held a comfortable lead over challenger Jim Webb until one of Webb's camera-toting aides captured footage of Allen making a racial slur during a campaign stop. The video soon held the number 1 ranking on YouTube and gained national attention. Allen has since taken a steep drop in the polls + Republicans now risk losing a seat they thought secure."

Does Offshoring Threaten Combat Software? - kdawson 206 - PreacherTom writes,

"Pentagon officials report that 'maliciously placed code' could compromise the security of the Defense Department and, ultimately, hurt its ability to fight wars. The culprits: offshore programmers. While the Pentagon has stepped up its vendor screening and software testing of late, it's becoming more difficult and costly to test every line of software code on increasingly sophisticated weapons systems. The task force assigned to this issue will be soon presenting its report + most likely will determine that offshoring presents too great a risk."

Global Privacy Rankings Released - kdawson 179 - djmurdoch writes

to alert us to the release of Privacy International's privacy ranking of 37 nations. This came out of PI and EPIC's annual Privacy and Human Rights global study, which this year runs to 1,200 pages. From a Globe and Mail article on the rankings: "Germany and Canada are the best defenders of privacy, and Malaysia and China the worst, an international rights group said in a report released Wednesday. Britain was rated as an endemic surveillance society, at No. 33, just above Russia and Singapore... The United States did only slightly better, at No. 30, ranked between Israel and Thailand, with few safeguards and widespread surveillance." PI's study coincided with a report from Britain's information commissioner warning that the UK could "sleep-walk into a surveillance society". The nation now has one CCTV camera for every 14 people.

Google Ad Revenue To Top UK Broadcaster's - kdawson 119 - GoingTurbo writes,

"By the end of the year advertisers in the UK will have spent more money advertising on Google than they did on the UK's Channel Four TV station. The article suggests we will see the slow erosion of traditional television broadcasting + with it, the death of the great TV ads of the past. The article offers an alternative possibility for the future of television." From the article: "The US has been forced to contend with heinously patronizing and crude TV advertising for decades, but the UK's advertising industry has managed to create art out of the dirty act of selling. Some of the best short films of the last century have been television advertisements... Even if some of these make the transition... online, they'll lack the spectacle of their TV equivalent."

The light poles would have had to been 440 feet tall (+/- 75 feet) for this aircraft to bring them down. Which you can clearly see in the below picture, the aircraft is too high, even for the official released video of the 5 frames where you see something cross the Pentagon Lawn at level attitude. The 5 frames of video captured by the parking gate cam is in direct conflict with the Aircraft Flight Data Recorder information released by the NTSB. More information will be forthcoming as we come to our conclusions on each issue. We have contacted the NTSB regarding the conflict between the official story and the FDR. They refuse to comment.

Captured documents in Manning’s possession reveal that on August 10, 1944 a conference of top representatives of German industry and finance enacted a flight capital program in which Germany’s economic wealth was to be legally, but clandestinely, moved to “Safehavens” in neutral countries. (FTR#305.) Authorized by Bormann and executed by the SS, this conference paved the way for the tremendous economic power of Nazi Germany to power a postwar perpetuation of a Third Reich gone underground. As the captured documents reveal, an important provision of this conference was that German finance and industry would continue to sustain the Nazi party after the formal surrender of Germany. (FTR#305.) The Third Reich has been able to survive—underground—in deadly, Mafia-like fashion.
A decisively powerful network of corporate entities run by hardened SS veterans, the Bormann group constitutes what one veteran banker termed “the greatest concentration of money power under a single control in history.” The foundation of the organization’s clout is money—lots and lots of money. Controlling German big business and, through investments, much of the rest of the world’s economy, the organization was the repository for the stolen wealth of Europe, estimated by British intelligence to have totaled more than $180 billion by the end of 1943 (not including the money taken from Greece and the former Soviet Union, nor that taken after 1943.) [For more on the global economic significance of the Bormann group, see—among other programs—FTR#99.] This organization literally constitutes a postwar “Underground Reich” with (as discussed in FTR#155) a governing hierarchy composed of the sons and daughters of SS men, holding military ranks and titles from the Third Reich.
In addition to the enormous power deriving from its consummate economic clout, the Bormann group has wielded tremendous global influence through its intelligence and enforcement network. Administered by SS general Heinrich Mueller, the wartime head of the Gestapo, the Bormann group’s intelligence and security network was composed of some of the toughest, most capable veterans of the SS. In addition, the Bormann organization and Mueller’s security outfit have commanded the loyalty of the political, intelligence and military elements requisitioned by the Allies after the war. In that regard, the Bormann/Mueller operation could draw on the loyalties of the Reinhard Gehlen spy outfit that handled the CIA’s intelligence on the former Soviet Union and which ultimately became the intelligence service of the Federal Republic of Germany. In addition, Bormann and Mueller were the political masters of the numerous scientists recruited by the U.S. and other nations for their expertise during the Cold War, as well as the numerous Nazis brought into the U.S. under the auspices of the Crusade For Freedom. Those latter ultimately coalesced into a major element of the Republican Party. (For more about the Crusade for Freedom, see—among other programs—FTR#465.)
With its economic, political and espionage capabilities, the Bormann group embodies the triumph of the forces of National Socialism in the postwar period. Whereas the United States was the dominant element within the international cartel system prior to + during, World War II, the Bormann group is the primary entity in the postwar global corporate economy.
You would think that we are facing the most sinister, powerful secretive underground empire ever conceived on planet earth...

The Nazis Go Underground-By Curt Reiss
The Third Reich’s elaborate plans for postwar underground survival and continuity were predicated on the certainty that the multinational corporate community would preserve the Nazi infrastructure as a bulwark against communism during the (then) imminent Cold War. This “Underground Reich” was foreseen and analyzed in Curt Reiss’s The Nazis Go Underground, published in early 1944.

In addition to the powerful corporate economic interests allied with Nazi business centers, the process of underground perpetuation was greatly aided by “Fifth Column” movements abroad—those in Argentina and the United States in particular. Composed of ideological supporters of the fascist philosophy, these Fifth Column movements were instrumental in realizing Nazi blueprints for military conquest during the war, as well as postwar continuation + enlargement of those plans. # posted by Anonymous : 7:38 AM
