01.Nov.2004 Bin Ladin: Reasons to attack remain
01.Nov.2004 To Bush, courts don't matter: The court said that the president, despite his claims to the contrary, could not hold Americans as enemy combatants without giving them a range of due process rights. - But it appears that President Bush and his Justice Department minions care little about the court's admonitions.
01.Nov.2004 The road to the courts : If it's close, the Armageddon election could be about to sink into a legal purgatory
01.Nov.2004 Kerry reaps Iowa dividends; poor job rating hurts Bush : Some 27 percent of likely voters have already voted. Kerry carried 52 percent of them, Bush captured only 41 percent.

01.Nov.2004 George W. Bush and the 'politics of fear' : President George W Bush's response to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, has been a world-wide campaign to kill or capture the Muslim enemies of America - his so-called "global war on terror." Everything that could go wrong with Bush's "war" has gone wrong.
01.Nov.2004 Candidate Bush Was Already Thinking About Invading Iraq in 1999: 'My father had all this political capital built up when he drove the Iraqis out of Kuwait and he wasted it.' He said, 'If I have a chance to invade.if I had that much capital, I'm not going to waste it.

01.Nov.2004 China faults Bush on Iraq : On the eve of the U.S. presidential election, China accused President George W. Bush of trying to "rule over the whole world" and said that the invasion of Iraq had destroyed the global antiterrorism coalition and worsened religious and ethnic conflicts.
01.Nov.2004 Former vice-premier of China: US strategy seriously flawed : The troubles and disasters the United States has met do not stem from threats by others, but from its own cocksureness and arrogance.
01.Nov.2004 China Lays Into 'Bush Doctrine' Ahead of U.S. Poll : On the eve of the U.S. election, China laid into what it called the "Bush doctrine," said the Iraq war has destroyed the global anti-terror coalition and blamed arrogance for the problems dogging the United States worldwide.
01.Nov.2004 China, Iran sign oil and gas deal: China's oil giant Sinopec Group has signed a $70 billion oil and natural gas agreement with Iran.
01.Nov.2004 It goes deeper than Bush : The problem may not be him alone but America itself.

01.Nov.2004 Army Maxing Helicopters in Counterinsurgency War: The U.S. military is increasingly turning to attack helicopters to battle guerrillas in Iraq, using tactics closer to those from Vietnam or Israel.
01.Nov.2004 Fresh U.S. troops arrive in Iraq on eve of expected showdown in Fallujah: The delays in departures and the arrival of new units will push the total U.S. military presence in Iraq to around 142,000.
01.Nov.2004 Weapons Remain Unaccounted for in Iraq : Even after the U.S. military secured some 400,000 tons of munitions, as many as 250,000 tons remain unaccounted for.
01.Nov.2004 US army official slams Bush over Halliburton Iraq contracts: One of the US Army's top procurement officers yesterday called the Bush administration's grant of multibillion-dollar contracts to oil services giant Halliburton "the worst case of contracting abuse she has ever seen".
01.Nov.2004 Naomi Klein: Carlyle Covers Up: This was Carlyle's stroke of genius: When Baker was appointed, the consortium recruited Albright to front the deal; when they got caught, Carlyle denied all involvement in this "unsuitable" activity and left a prominent Democrat holding the bag
In case you missed it: Video: Exposed: The Carlyle Group : I defy you to watch this 48 minute documentary and not be outraged about the depth of corruption and deceit within the highest ranks of our government
01.Nov.2004 Scott Ritter: The war on Iraq has made moral cowards of us all
We all are moral cowards when it comes to Iraq. Our collective inability to summon the requisite shame and rage when confronted by an estimate of 100,000 dead Iraqi civilians in the prosecution of an illegal and unjust war not only condemns us, but adds credibility to those who oppose us. Continued

01.Nov.2004 "Bush is talking to the troops, the troops are real," said Bush spokesman Steve Schmidt said. He noted that the crowd the president was speaking to was much larger than depicted in the ad.
The ad, released Wednesday, is an emotional appeal in which Bush defends his decision to go to war and empathizes with fallen soldiers and their families.
The ad is running on national cable networks and in local media markets in at least one state, Ohio.
The issue was first mentioned on the liberal Web log www.dailykos.co

01.Nov.2004 Rove, who is the chief suspect among Internet conspiracy theorists and some Democrats for sending Bush answers in the presidential debates via a hidden earpiece, stood on the sidelines in Manchester happily checking his Blackberry. At one point his mood was so festive that he even cupped his hand over his mouth and pretended to be transmitting lines to the president.
"Terrorist networks around the world," Rove intoned, as if he were sending instructions to Bush. "We will confront them and stay on the offensive."
Now, with only 24 hours to go before the election (and assuming no deadlock), Rove will soon know whether he can light a cigar with Bush or start looking for a new job.
On Thursday night in the Pennsylvania pasture, Rove was asked how he was feeling.
"I'm feeling good," he said. "I'm feeling very good."
Did it worry him that he was feeling good?
"It does sometimes," Rove acknowledged. "Particularly about 3:30 in the morning."

01.Nov.2004 "I'm just really ticked that editors are saying they have to know what it is before they'll ask the White House about it," says Nelson. "That's way too high a threshold for pursuing this story."
Jeffrey Klein, a former Mother Jones editor, says, "The current fear factor among American political reporters is greater than anything I've ever witnessed. Having spoken with more than a dozen journalists, I've heard a variety of excuses for why they won't or can't pursue this story. The excuses range from 'Kerry isn't making an issue of this so how can I?' ( Time magazine) to 'The paper has clamped down on anti-Bush stories. Nothing about the bulge is going to run here before the election.' (The Wall Street Journal ).
Klein adds, "Major media outlets are understandably reluctant to influence an election, but in this instance, they have a certified government expert willing to go on the record; there's absolutely no excuse for their silence. All any journalist needs to do is report this news."
Meanwhile, it becomes another form of bias for the media not to do anything, once the evidence is put out there, as Nelson has done with these photos.
It is no longer possible for the administration and the president himself to laugh off the bulge in his jacket at all three debates as bad tailoring, or as an Internet urban legend. Between Nelson's photos and the onslaught in such comedic venues as The Daily Show and Gary Trudeau's Doonesbury column, the question has to be asked: What was the president wearing and why does he wear it?
URL: https://www.motherjones.com/cgi-bin/print_article.pl?url=https://www.motherjones.com/news/update/2004/11/10_407.html
01.Nov.2004 A third big question is why the media -- and the Kerry campaign -- have stayed away from this story, refusing to press the president for an explanation of the bulges in his three suit jackets. Several calls to the Kerry campaign press office for a response to this and earlier articles on the topic went unanswered.
Nelson says that for several weeks he has tried to interest the major media outlets in photos he had worked on from the first debate, to no avail.
He says he offered the photos at no charge to the Los Angeles Times , which "sat on them for four days" and never returned his phone call. He claims he also offered them to the New York Times , "and they promised a story which was ready to go last Thursday when it was yanked at the last minute by higher ups." Finally, he says he offered his photos of the first debate to the Washington Post . Assistant Managing Editor Bob Woodward, he says, called him personally. "He said it would take too long for him to clear these images with his editors and he encouraged me to go to Salon."

01.Nov.2004 Was Bush Wired? Sure Looks Like It.
A NASA photo expert's analysis makes it clear: Bush is lying -- he wore some kind of device in each of the three debates. So why won't the media go near this story?
Dave Lindorff
30.Oct.2004 A leading NASA scientist who normally spends his days analyzing and enhancing photo images sent across the depths of space by the Cassini and other space probes has turned his expertise to images of the president in his three debates. His conclusion: "George Bush is obviously wearing something -- probably a receiver of some kind -- under his jacket for each debate."
Robert M. Nelson, who has worked for NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory at the California Institute of Technology for some three decades, provided a dramatic photo of the bulge under the jacket at the first debate to Salon.com which posted it Oct. 29. Now -- working at home and using his own computers -- he's done the same analysis for MotherJones.com on images of Bush's back taken during the second two debates. Nelson, a top-ranked senior research scientist at JPL and past chair of the Division for Planetary Sciences of the American Astronomical Society, says that by enhancing the contrast and the edge definition in digital photographs taken of video broadcasts of the three debates, the object under the jacket can be clearly delineated.

01.Nov.2004 Document 1 - Islama 01750
U.S. Embassy (Islamabad), Cable, "Afghanistan: Raising Bin Ladin With the Taliban" Mar 4, 1997, Confidential, 5 pp.
Source: Released under the Freedom of Information Act to the National Security Archive.
Mullah Ehsanullah Ehsan, an influential member of the Taliban Inner Shura, communicates his belief to U.S. embassy officials that the expulsion of Saudi terrorist Osama bin Laden from Afghanistan is not a solution to the bin Laden "problem." "To where and how should he be expelled? ... Bin Laden was expelled from Saudi Arabia to Sudan and from Sudan to Afghanistan." The Taliban official also suggests that bin Laden did not have the communications equipment to lead his followers in Saudi Arabia and that the Taliban did not know where bin Laden was. If he is "located in areas under our control, we will definitely impose a ban on his activities."
According to Mullah Ehsan, the real problem is not bin Laden, but the failure of the U.S. government to recognize the legitimacy of the Taliban government, which he advised America to do, "If the U.S. did not want every Afghan to become a bin Laden." The Taliban representatives furthermore erroneously claim that bin Laden was invited to Afghanistan by the "enemies of the Taliban," and was not giving any financial assistance to the Taliban.
According to The 9/11 Commission Report (p65) and Ahmed Rashid's Taliban , (p133), bin Laden's 1996 return to Afghanistan was supported by the Nangarhar Shura in Jalalabad, a local council of Islamic leaders that was not aligned with either the Rabbani government in Kabul or the Taliban in Kandahar. When Jalalabad fell to the Taliban in September 1996 bin Laden solidified his ties to the Taliban and the relationship grew.

26.Oct.2004 Editor IsBushWired writes: For what it's worth, someone wrote in to Portland Indy Media recently saying that a company called Tether Technologies of Columbia, MO had designed the device Bush wore. The poster also said that the signal was carried to his ear by an Israeli-designed earpiece "thinner than a human hair." I haven't been able to find Tether Technologies yet. Another post I found last night on Portland Indy Media: ITMBTC link
The US government has been funding the developement of this type of device for years. The device, the MET™ Ossicular Stimulator, is manufactured by Otologics (www.otologics.com) and does not require any external mechanics at the ear...making it undetectable from side views. They must have needed a transponder to pick up the signal and transfer it to the device ... hence the bulge.

01.Nov.2004 Happy Halloween Just came back from my Halloween jaunt. I did not dress up as a hump-backed W, as announced. Instead, I was the Devil. Insert your own joke here.
Tomorrow, you should see a fairly longish piece on the bulge, perhaps my last. I've spent some time looking for an old newsclip that would go a long ways toward legitimizing this story. I've also been looking for an "inside" source willing to go on the record. (There have been a few off-the-record claimants.)
Until tomorrow, you'll want to read "A media bulge leads down a prickly rabbit hole," which discusses the role of the press, as well as the medical device theory.
I also strongly advise you to check out David Lindorff's piece in Mother Jones, which serves nicely as the last word on the subject before the election.
A new photo enlargement is said to show signs of an LED. Personally, I think this is an artificat of over-Photoshopping a familiar image. But check it out for yourselves.
The official White House site, bless 'em, has given us another very clear bulge shot.
This last minute piece on Karl Rove ( boo! hiss! ) in the Internatioal Herald Tribune more-or-less accuses him of being the man whispering in Bush's earpiece.
I should have mentioned this a while back, but the Bush campaign's willingness to use doctored photos goes a long ways toward substantiating the notion that they cheat in other areas.
Hope you all had a happy All Hallow's Eve.

14.Oct.2004 Washington, D.C., - The Transportation Security Administration this week refused to release the texts or even the titles of five aviation warnings given to airlines just before the 9/11 terrorist attacks, even though the titles and substance of the warnings have been published in the best-selling 9/11 Commission report, according to an analysis of the documents posted today on the Web by the National Security Archive at George Washington University.
The five warnings - called Information Circulars - were sent to the civil air industry by the Federal Aviation Administration to summarize emerging threats between June 22, 2001 and August 16, 2001. The 9/11 Commission, the Congressional 9/11 Joint Inquiry + White House briefings described and discussed these warnings in detail; and the National Security Archive filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request for them in April 2004. By letter dated September 29, 2004 and received by the Archive this week, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) withheld all the substance of the warnings, citing five different exemptions to the FOIA + blacked out even the unclassified information - such as the document titles and numbers - claiming that this information fits in the new category of "Sensitive Security Information."
"This ranks as a dubious secret," said Barbara Elias, the FOIA coordinator at the National Security Archive. "The titles and document numbers are printed in the number one best-selling book in the country, but clearly our government has not acted on a central recommendation of that book, to reduce secrecy and share more information with the public."

01.Nov.2004 In his new exposé of the National Security Agency entitled Body of Secrets, author James Bamford highlights a set of proposals on Cuba by the Joint Chiefs of Staff codenamed OPERATION NORTHWOODS. This document, titled “Justification for U.S. Military Intervention in Cuba” was provided by the JCS to Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara on March 13, 1962, as the key component of Northwoods. Written in response to a request from the Chief of the Cuba Project, Col. Edward Lansdale, the Top Secret memorandum describes U.S. plans to covertly engineer various pretexts that would justify a U.S. invasion of Cuba. These proposals - part of a secret anti-Castro program known as Operation Mongoose - included staging the assassinations of Cubans living in the United States, developing a fake “Communist Cuban terror campaign in the Miami area, in other Florida cities and even in Washington,” including “sink[ing] a boatload of Cuban refugees (real or simulated),” faking a Cuban airforce attack on a civilian jetliner + concocting a “Remember the Maine” incident by blowing up a U.S. ship in Cuban waters and then blaming the incident on Cuban sabotage. Bamford himself writes that Operation Northwoods “may be the most corrupt plan ever created by the U.S. government.”

01.Nov.2004 All governments that start a war use deception to do so. No modern people ever agreed to march into another land, murder the women and children in their beds + take what did not belong to them. All invading armies have to be lied to, to make them believe they act in self defense or to recover what is rightfully theirs. The Nazis followed Hitler into Poland behind the lie that Poland had attacked them first, then across France convinced that France had originally been German lands in the distant past. The German people believed those lies because the German media worked just as hard to sell Hitler's lies as the American media works to sell the lies of the US Government.
One media lie which has been repeated recently (and endlessly) in the quest to create a new war for the oil of Iraq is the claim that Saddam Hussein gassed the Kurds in Iraq. Most people accept this as a fact simply because they have been told Saddam Hussein gassed the Kurds over and over by an endless line of government spokeswhores. The TRUTH is that the United Nations investigated these claims and found NO EVIDENCE that Saddam had ever committed any such acts. Did the American media report the United Nations conclusions to you? No?
The fastest way to trick a population into invading someone else's lands is to create the fear and terror NOT to do so. Hitler was hardly the first to use the tactic; fake terror against ones own population as a tool of domestic policy goes back to Roman times.
Even the US Government uses fake terror. In this excerpt from James Bamford's book, "Body Of Secrets", declassified documents reveal US Government plans for staged terrorist attacks on Americans, with the intention of blaming Cuba, following the Bay of PIgs, a plan spiked by John F. Kennedy. More about Operation NORTHWOODS from the National Security Archives.
"Body Of Secrets" by James Bradford, was mentioned last spring in an article in the Baltimore Sun + more recently in an article in ABC News . This book is available in bookstores or at Amazon.com .

01.Nov.2004 The people of the United States are the most lied-to people on Earth. We are more lied-to than the people of the USSR ever were. The US Government lies to protect its crimes, to replace leaders We The People elect with ones the government insiders prefer to have, to conceal its mistakes, to initiate wars of conquest among a population morally opposed to such adventurism.

01.Nov.2004 The FBI is in the business of planting false information for the express purpose of deceiving the public. They do it in the media. They do it on the internet. (And right now they are working overtime in every public forum they can infiltrate).
https://www.whatreallyhappened.com/truth.html
01.Nov.2004 Alternatively, in hindsight, it is pbvious that the media's obsession with Monica Lewinsky was a ploy to distract the American people from the real crimes of drug money laundering at the heart of the Whitewater affair, while the media obsession with Chandra Levy early in the year was done to distract the people of the United States from the fact that the US Government was already informing other nations of a plan to invade Afghanistan BEFORE there was ever an attack on the World Trade Towers.
And again, these are not isolated incidents, but part of a continuum, as evidenced by the various scandals which have hit the major media involving the fraudulently manufactured Food Lion story, the phony Bosnian "Concentration Camp" photos + the use of explosives to manufacture a story about unsafe side mounted gas tanks on GM trucks.
URL: https://www.whatreallyhappened.com/truth.html
01.Nov.2004 From a very young age we are all raised in the belief that the media is supposed to keep an eye on the government, to watch out for wrongdoing. There is a carefully crafted illusion of an independent media, but it is illusion only. Since WW2, the Central Intelligence Agency has been running operation MOCKINGBIRD which places CIA assets in management positions of all the media. That the CIA wields a great deal of control over the media and what it tells the American people was revealed by the heavy handed actions taken in regards to covering up that portion of the Iran-Contra scandal that took place at the Mena, Arkansas airport . Following the killing of cocaine smuggler and Iran-Contra pilot Barry Seal, writers Roger Morris and Sally Denton uncovered documents proving that Seal had been working for the CIA. That information was written up as an article for the Washington Post + had been cleared for publication by legal and fact checking when Managing Editor Bob Kaiser spiked the article without explanation. When writer Gary Webb wrote his series of article "Dark Alliance", which accused the CIA of being the source of the cocaine that poured into Los Angeles in the 1980s, virtually every major newspaper, including the Los Angeles Times, united in their attack on his story. Less than one year later, the CIA's Inspector General issued a report that admitted to the cocaine trafficking in connection with Iran-Contra. None of the newspapers that savaged Gary Webb ever bothered to apologize to him.
Recently the American Movie Classics cable channel ran a program which openly admitted that the CIA uses Hollywood for propaganda purposes. Consistant with that revelation, the AMC program portrayed the CIA/Hollywood alliance as being of great benefit to the movie-going, tax-paying, public.

01.Nov.2004 The media
Asked to give a toast before the prestigious New York Press Club, John Swinton, the former Chief of Staff at the New York Times, made this candid confession [it's worth noting that Swinton was called "The Dean of His Profession" by other newsmen, who admired him greatly]: " There is no such thing, at this date of the world's history, as an independent press. You know it and I know it. There is not one of you who dares to write your honest opinions + if you did, you know beforehand that it would never appear in print. I am paid weekly for keeping my honest opinions out of the paper I am connected with. Others of you are paid similar salaries for similar things + any of you who would be so foolish as to write honest opinions would be out on the streets looking for another job.
If I allowed my honest opinions to appear in one issue of my paper, before twenty-four hours my occupation would be gone. The business of the journalist is to destroy the truth; to lie outright; to pervert; to vilify; to fawn at the feet of mammon + to sell the country for his daily bread. You know it and I know it and what folly is this toasting man independent press. We are the tools and vassals of the rich men behind the scenes. We are the jumping jacks, they pull the strings and we dance. Our talents, our possibilities and our lives are all the property of other men. We are intellectual prostitutes. "

01.Nov.2004 The "No Stolen Elections" campaign was initiated in September of 2004 as a joint project of United for Peace & Justice, Global Exchange, Code Pink + The Liberty Tree Foundation for the Democratic Revolution. Members of these groups manage this website in cooperation with the many individuals and organizations which have joined this effort.
"We have established a Fair Elections Advisory Council made up of US and international elections experts who will give us their assessment on election day itself. If they find significant fraud, we will activate the Urgent Response Network on or immediately after November 3rd, calling on people everywhere to engage in protest, including non-violent civil disobedience, in front of their local federal buildings and other appropriate places. We will also be asking those who can to converge in the states where the most serious fraud occurred,..."
I ask each of you reading these messages about election monitoring sites to agree to pass the information on to at least two other forums, one blogger + as many of your friends as you can and that you ask each of them to do the same.

National Day of Action Nov. 3!
Day of Popular Protest and Civil Disobedience Across the US to Demand:
Democracy Not Disenfranchisement!
Education Not Occupation!
Health Care Not Warfare!
San Francisco--- As a nation deeply divided on the war in Iraq enters the
homestretch of the 2004 presidential election this week--and the prospect of
massive confusion and re-count scenarios seems more and more likely-anti-war
and pro-democracy organizers in cities across the country are making
preparations for demonstrations on Nov. 3, the day after the election.
Emphasizing health care, education, the direction of US foreign policy +
drawing attention to mass-disenfranchisement and the flaws in the electoral
system in the United States, "Beyond Voting" demonstrators will hit the
streets next Wednesday from Baltimore, to Chicago, to Pittsburg, Vermont and
San Francisco. The demonstrations are meant to spark a grassroots dialogue
on "The Day After" about the real meaning of democracy and the next steps
for taking the country back post-Nov. 2.
"Even though millions of people did not support this war and marched in the
streets to stop it, an antiwar candidate will not win the presidency in
2004," said Shahid Buttar, an attorney and activist in Washington, where
organizers plan a rally in Lafayette park on the 3rd. "Sadly, our votes will
not be enough to save lives and end this unjust war. In order to end the US
empire's occupation of Iraq, we must go beyond voting on Nov. 2 and engage
in the honorable American tradition of civil disobedience to restore
justice, peace, and real democracy."

01.Nov.2004 I do not wish to expand any further. However, I deeply regret not being able to transmit to you, dear gladiators of the most noble and humane creation of the world, my most intimate sentiments on education. And if I was urged to express in just a few words some of my ideas in this context after a long life of struggle and experience in the field and having seen the development of our world over nearly half a century, to reach the dramatic situation of the planet’s 6.5 billion inhabitants, I harbor the most absolute conviction that only education can save our species. Only education has received the exceptional privilege of a fabulous intelligence with the capacity of creating unimaginable values and transmitting and acting in accordance with them, without which human beings would be nothing more than the blind product of the laws of nature, full of instincts and impulses, which could never merit the qualification of people. It is that intelligence and those values which convert people into human beings capable of attaining the survival of their own species.
Educating is to transform a little animal into a person. If we do not come to be human beings in the profoundest sense of the world, our species cannot survive. Your task + I think of you as you and us, is devoted to attaining those objectives with all our forces. That proposition defines the meaning of our Battle of Ideas and explains our tremendous efforts to create a general integral culture in our people, as something that no human community can do without.

19.Oct.2004 What if 2004 is the new 2000? What if massive vote irregularities hit us again? Some say they are already cropping up. My own suggestion as to how to deal with vote fraud --unrelenting civil unrest and a general strike until a fair revote takes place -- seems to have attracted few converts. Here's another possibility: An emergency recount commission. It can happen, but we all need to get behind this idea right now .
# posted by Joseph : 3:37 PM Comments: I'm white but I live in a mostly black nabe and in a building of 127 people of whom around 115 are black. The building and neighborhood are almost totally Kerry supporters. It has been suggested to me that if a fraud occurs again like the one in the election in 2000 there will be rioting in the streets. I believe that black voters feel the injustice that occured in 2000 more accutely than white voters...though I could be wrong about that.
In any case, it seems to me that civil action and rioting in the streets would be a totally appropriate response this time around.
https://cannonfire.blogspot.com/2004/10/why-do-american-christians-love-death.html
23.Oct.2004 Why do American Christians love death? For some selected answers to that question, read this piece by Dr. Teresa Whitehurst. She gives a number of reasons, including this one:
feel they dare not oppose this or any war because talking about peace, objecting to war's human cost, or even referring to the United Nations has become associated in their minds with the Antichrist and eternal damnation, thanks to fictional works based on Thessalonians such as the Left Behind books and video (this video makes clear the fearful reasoning behind the knee-jerk reactions of many pro-war Christians against peace itself, peacemakers of any kind [poignant indeed in light of Jesus' teaching, "Blessed are the peacemakers"], the Middle East "road map," international dialogue and cooperation + any form of human rights accountability), These words get near the correct answer.
The American fundamentalist has entered into a world of perfect paranoia; any data which does not fit into the fundamentalist-approved scenario is a viewed as a lie told by a "liberal" media commandeered by Satan himself. Outsiders cannot even begin to conceive of the influence wielded by Tim LaHaye and his fear-mongering comrades.
I saw much the same thing happen in the 1970s. Hal Lindsey's The Late Great Planet Earth swept the country by storm -- but it was an underground storm (if you'll forgive such a skewed metaphor). The thing had nationwide impact precisely because intelligent people thought it unworthy of response.
If Bush wins, he'll have LaHaye to thank.
# posted by Joseph : 8:42 PM Comments: "American Christians" is too broad a category. It's fundamentalist Christians who are elitist. Being elitist means that only people subscribing to that brand of Christianity will be saved. Even Catholicism admits that being a member of another religion does not automatically cast one into hell.
Christ certainly was not exclusionary...his message included everyone. Fundamentalism excludes everyone but the relatively small sect that says you will go to hell unless you accept Jesus as Lord and Savior.
Fundamentalism is a paranoid, isolationist, exclusionary, fear-mongering form of religion. Is it diamentrically opposed to the Christian message. It's more an ideology based on hate than a religion...it has nothing to do with a merciful God. Its message is that "God despises and will annihilate everyone but us".

21.Oct.2004 70-Year-Old Called Up for Iraq Duty
Updating this story: apparently Mr. Wallace played a hoax on KNTV Television. KNTV admited to KGO radio last night that they had been taken in by a hoax.
I apologize for repeating a hoax story.
Old story below.
KNTV (NBC's San Francisco Bay Area affiliate) reports that Ted Wallace of Los Gatos just received orders to report for deployment to Iraq.
The 70-year-old Wallace acknowledges that he "probably owes the army two years," but was surprised at being called up many years after he left the military. He checked the documents with his local recruiting office and they told him they were accurate and authentic. He says he is going to report to duty but hopes they don't put him on the front line. He also hopes that the army will put off his deployment until after his upcoming knee surgery.
He seemed pretty spry, but I can see the bottom of the barrel much more clearly.

31.Okt.2004 Her Majesty's Colonial Amphibious Arcade Ducks (formerly known as the US Marines) don't care for their Iraqi comrades.
"The marines are convinced that the ING knows where many of the IEDs are planted + even say they have caught guardsmen in the act of laying mines. When joint patrols come under attack, they say, the ING simply refuses to fight. As the relationship worsens, more and more ING are simply refusing to turn up at work. Of the 140 guardsmen based at Karmah an average of between 40 and 60 turn up on any given day. At other CAP barracks, that number is sometimes as low as two. Since the arrest of the Karmah ING captain, the rapport has become even more sullen. The marines sit under canvas shelters, convinced that the guardsmen lurking in their dormitories are traitors and murderers."

31.Okt.2004 I attended the John Buchanan Press Conference and Mr. Buchanan announced that he is voting for John Kerry to save the nation from George Bush and fascism. At the time I told Mr. Buchanan that I would not and could not vote for Kerry + that I still intended to vote for him. After thinking it over, I've decided that I will not vote for Mr. Buchanan.
In the future, any self-described anti-establishment politician who wants my vote must assure me that he will not drop out and vote for ANY establishment politician.
Mr Buchanan asked me if I was interested in getting serious about creating a permanent Citizens Alliance Party. I'm serious, but is he? Real political parties DO NOT endorse the candidates of other parties.
Mr. Buchanan does not have my support at this time, and Mr. Buchanan is going to have to make himself clear on a number of issues if he wishes to have my support in the future. I have no desire to expend effort promoting people who wind up working for the very establishment stooges they profess to oppose.

31.Okt.2004 Nasr: 'He's sending a message to the American people'
ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- The Al-Jazeera network aired a new videotape of Osama bin Laden Friday, in which the al Qaeda leader says that in order to avoid further attacks, the United States should not attack al Qaeda.
Octavia Nasr, CNN's senior editor for Arab affairs, spoke with "Crossfire" hosts Paul Begala and Tucker Carlson about the new tape and bin Laden's message.
BEGALA: Octavia, what is [it] that bin Laden is saying?
NASR: Well, the most important thing about bin Laden's speech is that he's addressing it to the American people. He's trying to explain why 9/11 happened, the idea and when it occurred to him + also telling the American people loud and clear that, unless they do something about it, America could be attacked again. ...
And he's sending a message to the American people, saying security is the most important thing to al Qaeda, as he says + "it should be the most important thing to you." But he says, "security is in your hands. No one can achieve that security for you, not Bush, not Kerry, not al Qaeda. It is in your hands." Basically, he is saying, "if we are not attacked, we won't attack anybody."
CARLSON: Octavia, you said that, in the tape, he explains why 9/11 happened. What was his explanation for why 9/11 happened?
NASR: Well, he says it is a response to the aggression suffered by Arabs and Muslims at the hands of the U.S.
He talks specifically about the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982 and how the U.S. took part in that. And he said when he saw the towers of Beirut fall, this is when it occurred to him that he had to make the U.S. pay for that aggression. And this is when he started plotting for those attacks.
Now, he did say that the attacks went better than they had planned. And he said that they had agreed on 20 minutes, within 20 minutes, the attacks should have been completed, because he said that he discussed this Mohamed Atta and told him, "You have to finish this job in 20 minutes before the Bush administration realizes what is going on." But then he goes on to say, "but the president was sitting down, more interested in listening to a child's story about a goat, rather than 50,000 U.S. citizens trapped facing the worst nightmare of their life in the World Trade Center," and that gave the terrorists 20 more minutes, he said, to achieve a lot more than they had planned.
BEGALA: Octavia, there have been reports for years that bin Laden had advanced kidney disease or some reports that he may have been wounded in the American liberation of Afghanistan. As you watch the tape and you listen to his voice, any sense that perhaps he is sick or wounded?
NASR: Well, I'm not a doctor. And I can't evaluate his health. What I can tell you -- having watched bin Laden, listened to him for many years, in fact translated a lot of his speeches -- this is a man that looks fine to me. We have seen a bin Laden that was tired before, especially after the Tora Bora attack. We have seen a bin Laden that couldn't move his arm + we all thought that he was wounded at the time.
This is a bin Laden that looks very comfortable, very composed. He's sitting down behind a desk, it looks like. He's talking very calmly. And he looks fine. He looks like he's aged a bit.
And you have to remember, we haven't seen bin Laden in over two years. What we have been receiving of him were audiotapes for over two years. So it looks like he's aged a bit, but he looks to be in good health. But, again, I mean, I'm not an expert on these issues.
There were reports also that said that the idea of dialysis and kidney failure and all that were not correct, that that was made up and that was not true. But, again, we do not know and there's no way anyone is going to be able to tell what his medical condition is at this point.

31.Okt.2004 U.S. probes pair of al Qaeda videotapes Bin Laden, self-described 'American jihadist' issue threats
GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan (CNN) -- Two videotapes threatening to unleash more terror attacks against the United States are being analyzed by U.S. intelligence officials hoping to find clues that could lead them to each speaker.
Video clips of a man claiming to be an American operative of al Qaeda were posted on the FBI's Web site, Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge said Saturday.
The posting said the agency is "urgently" seeking information on the person's identity and that he may be living outside the United States.
ABC News broadcast the video Thursday. The FBI describes the man as a self-proclaimed American jihadist using the alias Azzam the American, or Azzam al-Amriki.
On the tape, the man threatened terror attacks "at any moment," delivering the message in English. His face was covered with a headdress and he held a rifle.
"We hope you might recognize him from his voice, his body language, or the style and content of his speech," the FBI posting said.
The second tape -- of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden -- was broadcast Friday by the Arabic-language TV network Al-Jazeera, based in Qatar. The tape was received by the U.S. Embassy in Qatar before it was made public.
It was the first videotaped message from the al Qaeda leader in nearly three years. (CNN's Octavia Nasr discusses the tape). U.S. government officials said the tape appeared to be authentic and recently made. Political response
President Bush instructed top homeland and national security advisers Saturday to "take all actions that might be necessary" to respond to the new message from bin Laden, the White House said.
Ridge, speaking to reporters, said it is safe to vote Tuesday. He said there was no actionable intelligence in the tapes to warrant raising the threat level, now at the midpoint, or yellow, for most of the nation.
"The tapes are new, the threat is not," Ridge said. "We are far safer today than ever before.
"It is not news that we are the primary target of [bin Laden's] hatred and his evil," he said.
Americans may see additional security in place, but Ridge said such measures had been planned previously, in light of the elections.
Both Bush and Democratic challenger Sen. John Kerry swiftly denounced the bin Laden videotape. They both rejected any prospect of negotiating with terrorists or changing policy in response to bin Laden. Bin Laden video
In the al Qaeda leader's video, bin Laden wore a gold robe and white cloak and said the attacks were the result of U.S. foreign policy in Arab lands, referring specifically to Lebanon and the Palestinians, and later mentions both Bush and Kerry.
"Your security is not in the hands of Kerry or Bush or al Qaeda," bin Laden said in the video. "Your security is in your own hands. Any nation that does not attack us will not be attacked."
Bin Laden said he decided to attack the twin towers of the World Trade Center in 1982 after the invasion of Lebanon by Israel, which he claimed was backed by the U.S. Navy.
"And as I was looking at those towers that were destroyed in Lebanon, it occurred to me that we have to punish the transgressor with the same," he said, "and that we had to destroy the towers in America, so that they taste what we tasted and they stop killing our women and children."
The government has concluded with a "high degree of confidence" that the videotaped message from bin Laden is authentic, according to a government bulletin obtained by CNN. The document was sent to homeland security advisers and law enforcement agencies Friday.
John Brennan, director of the interagency Terrorist Threat Integration Center, appearing with Ridge, noted that there have been a number of broadcasts from al Qaeda that have not been followed by attacks. He said officials are analyzing the tapes in search of commonalities.

31.Okt.2004 Many people are probably wondering whether the Bin Laden we saw on television was the actual Osama Bin Laden. I am sure that’s the same question many people have asked every time Bin Laden has appeared on Al Jazeera’s screens in the past. The question rises even more strongly, considering that the previous appearance was about a year ago.
I think that it doesn’t really matter. No one (well, almost no one) has any way to know the truth, especially since the effects of this epiphany will probably be seen very soon. Way too soon.
Now, Bin Laden comes out after a year-long absence and pretty much tells the American people not to vote for Bush, because Bush will draw America into more war. He also says that he (and Al Qaeda) will not attack unless attacked. It almost sounds too fair to be true. Let’s not go into detailed accounts of the way he was dressed in his last message; I don’t have the necessary knowledge of the Islamic culture to do so, although I suspect a good knowledge of the most standard, almost banal Christian tradition would suffice.

31.Okt.2004 There is an interesting dynamic in play that I haven't begun tp grok yet but as more and more blogs are investigating and posting exposes it seems to become easier and easier for the powers that be to promulgate and maintain the big lie, passing off the 'exposed' truth as just so much paranoia. As Woody Allen said "I may be paranoid but that doesn't mean you aren't out to get me". Where will it end?

31.Okt.2004 Cronkite? Walter freaking CRONKITE? According to Drudge, Walter Cronkite just opined that Karl Rove jiggered up the most recent video "calling card" from Osama Bin Laden. This has to be the + I mean THE most bizarre statement of this bizarre political season. I thought only the wildest of the bloggers -- such as yours truly -- would allow themselves to consider such a possibility. Does anyone else recall when Cronkite was the point man among Warren Commission defenders?

31.Okt.2004 Back in June, when John Kerry was beginning to feel like a winner, we had a quick rendezvous on a rain-soaked runway in Aspen, Colorado, where he was scheduled to meet a harem of wealthy campaign contributors. I told him that Bush's vicious goons in the White House are perfectly capable of assassinating Nader and blaming it on him. His staff laughed, but the Secret Service men didn't. Kerry suggested I might make a good running mate + we reminisced about trying to end the Vietnam War in 1972.
That was the year I first met him, at a riot on that elegant little street in front of the White House. He was yelling into a bullhorn and I was trying to throw a dead rat over a black-spike fence and on to the President's lawn. We were angry and righteous in those days, and there were millions of us. We kicked two chief executives out because they were stupid warmongers. We conquered Lyndon Johnson and we stomped on Richard Nixon - which wise people said was impossible, but so what? It was fun. We were warriors then + our tribe was strong like a river. That river is still running. All we have to do is get out and vote, while it's still legal + we will wash those crooked warmongers out of the White House.

31.Okt.2004 I said all those things + I will say them again. Of course I will vote for John Kerry. I have known him for 30 years as a good man with a brave heart - which is more than even the President's friends will tell you about George W Bush, who is also an old acquaintance from the white-knuckle days of yesteryear. He is hated all over the world, including large parts of Texas + he is taking us all down with him. Bush is a natural-born loser with a filthy-rich daddy who pimped his son out to rich oil-mongers. He hates music, football and sex + he is no fun at all.
I voted for Ralph Nader in 2000, but I won't make that mistake again.

31.Okt.2004 It was the most brutal seizure of power since Hitler burned the Reichstag in 1933 and declared himself the new boss of Germany. Karl Rove is no stranger to Nazi strategy, if only because it worked for a while + it was sure fun for Hitler. But not for long. He ran out of oil, the whole world hated him + he liked to gobble pure crystal biphetamine and stay awake for eight days in a row with his maps and bombers and his dope-addled general staff.

31.Okt.2004 Did you see Bush on TV, trying to debate? Jesus, he talked like a donkey with no brains at all. The tide turned early, in Coral Gables, when Bush went belly up less than halfway through his first bout with Kerry, who hammered poor George into jelly. It was pitiful... I almost felt sorry for him, until I heard someone call him "Mister President" + then I felt ashamed.
Karl Rove, the President's political wizard, felt even worse. There is angst in the heart of Texas today + panic in the bowels of the White House. Rove has a nasty little problem + its name is George Bush. The president failed miserably from the instant he got onstage with John Kerry. He looked weak and dumb. Kerry beat him like a gong in Coral Gables, then again in St Louis and Tempe. That is Rove's problem. His candidate is a weak-minded frat boy who cracks under pressure in front of 60 million voters.
Bush signed his own death warrant in the opening round, when he finally had to speak without his teleprompter. It was a Cinderella story brought up to date in Florida that night - except this time, the false prince turned back into a frog.
Immediately after the first debate ended, I called Muhammad Ali at his home in Michigan, but whoever answered said the champ was laughing so hard that he couldn't come to the phone. "The debate really cracked him up," he chuckled. "The champ loves a good ass-whuppin'. He says Bush looked so scared to fight, he finally just quit and laid down."

31.Okt.2004 That is why George W Bush is President of the United States + Al Gore is not. Bush simply wanted it more + he was willing to demolish anything that got in his way, including the US Supreme Court. It is not by accident that the Bush White House (read: Dick Cheney & Halliburton Inc) controls all three branches of our federal government today. They are powerful thugs who would far rather die than lose the election in November.
The Republican establishment is haunted by painful memories of what happened to Old Man Bush in 1992. He peaked too early + he had no response to "It's the economy, stupid." Which has always been the case. Every GOP administration since 1952 has let the Military-Industrial Complex loot the Treasury and plunge the nation into debt on the excuse of a wartime economic emergency. Richard Nixon comes quickly to mind, along with Ronald Reagan and his ridiculous "trickle-down" theory of US economic policy. If the rich get richer, the theory goes, before long their pots will overflow and somehow "trickle down" to the poor, who would rather eat scraps off the Bush family plates than eat nothing at all. Republicans have never approved of democracy + they never will. It goes back to pre-industrial America, when only white male property owners could vote.

31.Okt.2004 U.S. identifies seven wanted in connection with al Qaeda
From the "Wolf Blitzer Reports" staff in Atlanta
ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft and FBI Director Robert Mueller presented photographs of seven people they say are associated with al Qaeda.
One is a Pakistani who's lived in Maryland and Massachusetts.
"Aafia Siddiqui is an al al Qaeda operative and facilitator. She attended colleges in the Boston area," said Muller at a Wednesday news conference.
A lawyer for the woman's family accuses the FBI of putting on a show to make it look like progress is being made in the war on terrorism.
"If the best they can do to make this country safe is to go after a 32-year-old mother of three, then we're all in a lot of trouble," says attorney Annette Lamereaux.
Another suspect is Adnan el Shukrijumah. He's said to be fluent in English, and some experts have compared him to Mohammed Atta, considered a top planner of the September 11 attacks.
"He's a trained operative. He poses an operational threat to the United States," said Mueller.
El Shukrijumah used to live in South Florida. His mother still does. "My son is innocent," Zurah Ahmed says. "I am sure + I am as a mother. I have a strong feeling my son is innocent."
Another suspect, Abderraouf Jdey obtained Canadian citizenship in 1995. Authorities say he left a suicide message on a videotape recovered in Afghanistan.
Two of the suspects, Ahmed Ghailani of Tanzania + Fazul Mohammad, are under indictment in the United States for the 1998 bombings of the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania. They are thought to be hiding in Kenya or Somalia.
A sixth suspect, Amer el-Maati, is identified as a Kuwaiti.
For many, the real surprise on Ashcroft's list was Adam Gadahn, a 25-year-old U.S. citizen who grew up in southern California.
A statement attributed to Gadahn appears on several Islamic Web sites.
It says: "I gradually realized I could not be a Christian ... Having been around Muslims in my formative years, I knew well that they were not the bloodthirsty, barbaric terrorists that the news media and the televangelists paint them to be ... It was really a natural progression."
"He's known to perform translations for al Qaeda as part of the services he has provided to al Qaeda," said Director Mueller.
Family members hope it's not true.
"I hope he's not involved in anything weird like that," says Gadahn's 17-year-old brother Omar.
And his aunt Nancy Pearlman says, "As far as I know he was never militant. Our family are strong believers in non-violence. We are strong believers in peace."

31.Okt.2004 The war on terror already has a hold on western political culture. "After a 300-year debate between freedom of the individual and protection of society, the protection of society seems to be the only priority," says Eyal. Black agrees: "We are probably moving to a point in the UK where national security becomes the electoral question."
Some critics of this situation see our striking susceptibility during the 90s to other anxieties - the millennium bug, MMR, genetically modified food - as a sort of dress rehearsal for the war on terror. The press became accustomed to publishing scare stories and not retracting them; politicians became accustomed to responding to supposed threats rather than questioning them; the public became accustomed to the idea that some sort of apocalypse might be just around the corner. "Insecurity is the key driving concept of our times," says Durodie. "Politicians have packaged themselves as risk managers. There is also a demand from below for protection." The real reason for this insecurity, he argues, is the decay of the 20th century's political belief systems and social structures: people have been left "disconnected" and "fearful".
Yet the notion that "security politics" is the perfect instrument for every ambitious politician from Blunkett to Wolfowitz also has its weaknesses. The fears of the public, in Britain at least, are actually quite erratic: when the opinion pollsters Mori asked people what they felt was the most important political issue, the figure for "defence and foreign affairs" leapt from 2% to 60% after the attacks of September 2001, yet by January 2002 had fallen back almost to its earlier level. And then there are the twin risks that the terrors politicians warn of will either not materialise or will materialise all too brutally + in both cases the politicians will be blamed. "This is a very rickety platform from which to build up a political career," says Eyal. He sees the war on terror as a hurried improvisation rather than some grand Straussian strategy: "In democracies, in order to galvanize the public for war, you have to make the enemy bigger, uglier and more menacing."

31.Okt.2004 Adam Curtis, who wrote and produced the series, acknowledges the difficulty of saying such things now. "If a bomb goes off, the fear I have is that everyone will say, 'You're completely wrong,' even if the incident doesn't touch my argument. This shows the way we have all become trapped, the way even I have become trapped by a fear that is completely irrational."
So controversial is the tone of his series, that trailers for it were not broadcast last weekend because of the killing of Kenneth Bigley. At the BBC, Curtis freely admits, there are "anxieties". But there is also enthusiasm for the programmes, in part thanks to his reputation. Over the past dozen years, via similarly ambitious documentary series such as Pandora's Box, The Mayfair Set and The Century of the Self, Curtis has established himself as perhaps the most acclaimed maker of serious television programmes in Britain. His trademarks are long research, the revelatory use of archive footage, telling interviews + smooth, insistent voiceovers concerned with the unnoticed deeper currents of recent history, narrated by Curtis himself in tones that combine traditional BBC authority with something more modern and sceptical: "I want to try to make people look at things they think they know about in a new way."
The Power of Nightmares seeks to overturn much of what is widely believed about Osama bin Laden and al-Qaida. The latter, it argues, is not an organised international network. It does not have members or a leader. It does not have "sleeper cells". It does not have an overall strategy. In fact, it barely exists at all, except as an idea about cleansing a corrupt world through religious violence.
Date/Time: 10/31/2004 20:2 The Power of Nightmares This is a must watch BBC documentary In the past our politicians offered us dreams of a better world. Now they promise to protect us from nightmares. The most frightening of these is the threat of an international terror network. But just as the dreams were not true, neither are these nightmares. The Power of Nightmares: Part II - The Phantom Victory This is a must watch BBC documentary
The Power of Nightmares continues its assessment of whether the threat from a hidden and organised terrorist network is an illusion. Part two, the Phantom Victory looks at how two groups, radical Islamists and neo-conservatives with seemingly opposing ideologies came together to defeat a common enemy. Watch It Now!

31.Okt.2004 Military Families Against Freedom of Speech Posted by Kynn on 11:33 PM, September 16, 2004
(Beyond the IE · Peace and War · Politics and Politicians · Proto-Fascism in the Valley) -- You know how you often hear smug statements from members of the military stating that your freedom of speech, of the press, of religion is a personal gift from them -- the armed forces -- to civilians? Well, one "dedicated Marine Corps wife" seems to feel that we've got too many freedoms in America. And the freedom of the press should be the first to go.

31.Okt.2004 The USA Today story refers to Adam's essay on his conversion experience which is widely available on the web:
Federal investigators believe Gadahn is the same person who describes his religious conversion on the Internet in an essay, "Becoming a Muslim." He describes growing up on a goat ranch in western Riverside County, Calif. He said his father supplied food to an Islamic food market near downtown Los Angeles.
Gadahn, a heavy metal music fan, said he was drawn to Islam in his youth. "Having been around Muslims in my formative years, I knew well that they were not the bloodthirsty, barbaric terrorists that the news media and the televangelists paint them to be," he wrote.
Although they highlight his heavy metal interest and his attraction to Islam, they fail to mention the most important factor that drove him to Islam: Conservative Christianity .
My father was raised agnostic or atheist, but he became a believer in One God when he picked up a Bible left on the beach. He once had a number of Muslim friends, but they've all moved out of California now. My mother was raised Catholic, so she leans towards Christianity (although she, like my father, disregards the Trinity). I and my siblings were/are home-schooled + as you may know, most home-school families are Christian. In the last 8 or so years, we have been involved with some home-schooling support groups, thus acquainting me with fundamentalist Christianity. It was an eye-opening experience. Setting aside the blind dogmatism and charismatic wackiness, it was quite a shock to me when I realized that these people, in their prayers, were actually praying TO JESUS. You see, I had always believed that Jesus (pbuh) was, at the very most, the Son of God (since that is what the Bible mistranslates "Servant of God" as). As I learned that belief in the Trinity, something I find absolutely ridiculous, is considered by most Christians to be a prerequisite for salvation, I gradually realized I could not be a Christian. [...]
Earlier this year, I began to listen to the apocalyptic ramblings of Christian radio's "prophecy experts." Their paranoid espousal of various conspiracy theories, rabid support of Israel and religious Zionism + fiery preaching about the "Islamic Threat" held for me a strange fascination. Why? Well, I suppose it was simply the need I was feeling to fill that void I had created for myself. In any case, I soon found that the beliefs these evangelists held, such as Original Sin and the Infallibility of "God's Word", were not in agreement with my theological ideas (not to mention the Bible) and I began to look for something else to hold onto.

Man mag da - politisch korrekt - zunächst an Blut denken. Oder, angesichts der aktuellen Preissprünge, an Benzin. Luxusfreunde würden mutmaßen, es sei Champagner. Alles falsch.
