| 08.Jan.2008 https://www.consortiumnews.com/archive/story33.html 1997 08.Jan.2008 https://www.consortiumnews.com/archive/story33.html Turkey got a wink and a nod from Washington as a quid pro quo for cooperating with the United States during the Gulf War. Turkish jets bombed Kurdish bases inside Iraqi territory. Meanwhile, on the ground, anti-Kurdish death squads were assassinating more than 1,000 non-combatants in southeastern Turkey. Hundreds of other Kurds "disappeared" while in police custody. Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International and the European Parliament all condemned the Turkish security forces for these abuses. Still, there was no hard evidence that Turkey's security forces had recruited criminal elements as foot soldiers. 03.Nov.1996 -only on- That evidence surfaced, when Catli' died in the fateful auto accident near Susurluk. Strewn amidst the roadside wreckage was proof of what many journalists and human rights activists had long suspected - - that successive Turkish governments had protected narco-traffickers, sheltered terrorists and sponsored gangs of killers to suppress Turkish dissidents and Kurdish rebels. Colonel Turkes confirmed that Catli had performed clandestine duties for Turkey's police and military. "On the basis of my state experience, I admit that Catli has been used by the state," said Turkes. Catli had been cooperating "in the framework of a secret service working for the good of the state," Turkes insisted. 08.Jan.2008 https://www.consortiumnews.com/archive/story33.html The Turkish security forces cited the need to restore order which had been shattered by rightist terrorist groups secretly sponsored by those same state security forces. 08.Jan.2008 https://www.consortiumnews.com/archive/story33.html 00.000.1970 -In the late s- former military prosecutor and Turkish Supreme Court Justice Emin Deger documented collaboration between the Grey Wolves and the government's counter-guerrilla forces as well as the close ties of the latter to the CIA. Turkey's Counter-Guerrilla Organization handed out weapons to the Grey Wolves and other right-wing terrorist groups. These shadowy operations mainly engaged in the surveillance, persecution and torture of Turkish leftists, according to retired army commander Talat Turhan, the author of three books on counter-guerrilla activities in Turkey. 08.Jan.2008 https://www.consortiumnews.com/archive/story33.html But Western intelligence also had its hooks into the Bulgarian smuggling scene, as evidenced 00.000.1980 -in the early s- by the CIA's use of Kintex to channel weapons to the Nicaraguan contras. The Reagan administration jumped on the papal assassination attempt as a propaganda opportunity, rather than helping to unravel the larger mystery. Although the CIA's link to the arms-for-drugs traffic in Bulgaria was widely known in espionage circles, hard-line U.S. + Western European officials promoted instead a bogus conspiracy theory that blamed the papal shooting on a communist plot. The so-called "Bulgarian connection" became one of the more effective disinformation schemes hatched during the Reagan era. It reinforced the notion of the Soviet Union as an evil empire. But the apparent hoax also diverted attention from extensive -- and potentially embarrassing -- ties between U.S. intelligence and the Turkey's narco-trafficking ultra-right. Fabrication of the conspiracy theory might have even involved suborning perjury. During his 00.Sep.1985 court testimony in Rome, Catli asserted that he had been approached by the West German BND spy organization, which allegedly promised him a large sum of money if he implicated the Bulgarian secret service and the KGB in the attempt on the pope's life. Five years later, ex-CIA analyst Melvin A. Goodman disclosed that his colleagues, under pressure from CIA higher-ups, skewed their reports to try to lend credence to the contention that the Soviets were involved. "The CIA had no evidence linking the KGB to the plot," Goodman told the Senate Intelligence Committee. "The New Hampshire primary is just about the only occasion in the American electoral calendar when a politician as famous and storied as Clinton is compelled to get out on the street and on to a soapbox and fight for every vote." 1/7 07.Jan.2008 The Most Crucial Democratic Presidential Debate Also Turned Out to be the Most Lively and Informative as Format Allowed for More Interaction Between Candidates. Hard to Gauge Impact Though, As "Change" (Obama and Edwards) Squared Off Against "Experience" (Clinton and Richardson). Clinton Forcefully Presented Her Credentials; Obama Avoided Any Mistakes; Edwards Passionately Laid Out the Populist Case; and Richardson Spoke the Most Candidly and Refreshingly. 07.Jan.2008 https://www.cannonfire.blogspot.com/ # posted by   Anonymous 07.Jan.2008 https://www.cannonfire.blogspot.com/ When 00.000.1995 -in the fall of- then county Supervisor of Elections Jackie Winchester told LaPore that she was retiring, LaPore “registered as a Democrat and ran” for the office, according to Tapper. The day before Florida 'reformed' its election law in the aftermath of the 00.Jan.2000 debacle, LaPore dropped her Democratic Party registration to register back to 'independent.' LaPore has been connected to Adnan Khashogi, the international arms dealer. 07.Jan.2008 https://www.cannonfire.blogspot.com/ Grossman also played a still-nebulous role in Plame-gate. Not only that: He met with General Ahmed on or around September 11, 2001! (Update: BradBlog confirms that Edmonds tagged Grossman. Keep in mind that Armitage and Grossman are thisclose . She names Grossman in the earlier videotaped interview which I'm including below.) Grossman's name has previously come up in stories about Sibel Edmonds: 07.Jan.2008 https://www.cannonfire.blogspot.com/ As we detailed in our earlier post, Sakka (or Sakra) was almost certainly giving information to Western intelligence 00.000.2001, at which point he was in Germany. Later, 00.000.2005, while he languished in a Turkish prison, he was visited by a group of Americans who promised him freedom if he testified falsely against Syria -- or so he has claimed. The strange pattern keeps repeating itself: The terrorists have ties to factions within the American security apparat. 07.Jan.2008 https://www.cannonfire.blogspot.com/ Back to the Times story: The results of the espionage were almost certainly passed to Abdul Qadeer Khan, the Pakistani nuclear scientist. Khan was close to Ahmad and the ISI. While running Pakistan’s nuclear programme, he became a millionaire by selling atomic secrets to Libya, Iran and North Korea. He also used a network of companies in America and Britain to obtain components for a nuclear programme. Get the picture? Valerie Plame was trying to stop Khan in his tracks. But Armitage stopped Valerie Plame in her tracks. Armitage and his neocon comrades are good buddies with Mehmood Ahmad, who was engineering this trade in nukes. Edmonds was later to see the scope of the Pakistani connections when it was revealed that one of her fellow translators at the FBI was the daughter of a Pakistani embassy official who worked for Ahmad. The translator was given top secret clearance despite protests from FBI investigators. The FBI's behavior cannot be excused as mere sloppiness. The times received substantial confirmation of Edmonds' story from CIA and FBI sources: One of the CIA sources confirmed that the Turks had acquired nuclear secrets from the United States and shared the information with Pakistan and Israel. “We have no indication that Turkey has its own nuclear ambitions. But the Turks are traders. To my knowledge they became big players in the late 1990s,” the source said. Some of the most intriguing material appears at the beginning of the Times piece. She approached The Sunday Times last month after reading about an Al-Qaeda terrorist who had revealed his role in training some of the 9/11 hijackers while he was in Turkey. 07.Jan.2008 https://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/1/6/112413/4231/854/431373 I know that many of you have been (rightly) concerned about FISA, and many of you have (rightly) been confused by the inexplicable behaviour of Democrats in Congress, and wonder why they behave as though they are being blackmailed. Now you know. If any American journalists/media wants to step up, please remember that the nuclear black market story covered by The Times is just one element of Sibel's case. Bradblog has more 07.Jan.2008 https://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/1/6/112413/4231/854/431373 The article doesn't name the official, but he is Marc Grossman, former #3 at the State Department, former ambassador to Turkey, and current Vice President at The Cohen Group, the lobbying company run by former Secretary of Defense William Cohen. (Sibel) claims that the FBI was also gathering evidence against senior Pentagon officials – including household names – who were aiding foreign agents. "If you made public all the information that the FBI have on this case, you will see very high-level people going through criminal trials," she said. The article declared that “live loads on these [perimeter] columns can be increased more than 2,000 percent before failure occurs.”[72] A careful reading of the piece also gives insight into why the plane impacts were not fatal to the integrity of the outer wall. The reason is simple: the perimeter columns were designed to function together as an enormous truss, specifically, a Vierendeel truss. The wall was inherently stable. After the plane impacts it behaved like an arch, simply transferring the load to the surrounding columns. As the 1964 article states,    “the WTC towers will have an inherent capacity to resist unforeseen calamities. This capacity stems from its Vierendeel wall system and is enhanced through the use of high-strength steels.”[73]   05.Jan.2008 https://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article18999.htm What all of this means, of course, is that even in the most improbable worst case, in which many or all WTC core columns lost half of their strength, there was still sufficient reserve capacity to support the building. 05.Jan.2008 https://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article18999.htm .[65] This means that the average core column in the impact zone of WTC-1 could support more than twice its design load before reaching the yield strength, i.e., the point where damage may begin to occur. My grateful thanks to the NIST investigative team for helping me locate these numbers, which were buried in the report. 05.Jan.2008 https://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article18999.htm The testing standards applicable 00.000.1968 give a reasonable idea of the required level of reserve strength in the steel columns and other materials used in the WTC.  					For example, in the most stringent test a steel member had to withstand 250% of the design load, plus half again its own weight, for a period of a week, without collapse.[62] 05.Jan.2008 https://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article18999.htm This finding is so astonishing it bears repeating: The NIST report presents no physical evidence whatsoever that the fires in the core of WTC-2 were raging infernos. On what, then, does the agency base its conclusion that “Dire structural changes were occurring in the building interior”?[59] The answer, apparently, is the following strange hedge:  					 05.Jan.2008 https://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article18999.htm Quiet flames. No roaring inferno. It is not surprising that NIST chose to ignore the testimony of these survivors.   05.Jan.2008 https://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article18999.htm Curiously, the 9/11 Commission Report also briefly mentions this episode, but, likewise, fails to discuss its possible significance, no doubt, for the same reason.[55] 05.Jan.2008 https://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article18999.htm On reaching the 78th floor sky lobby they found many dead or seriously injured people; but no raging inferno. Palmer’s radio exchange with another fireman shows no hint of panic or fear, as the following transcript shows:    Battalion Seven Chief (Palmer): "Battalion Seven ... Ladder 15, we've got two isolated pockets of fire. We should be able to knock it down with two lines. Radio that, 78th floor numerous 10-45 Code Ones.    Ladder 15: "Chief, what stair you in?" 					   Battalion Seven Chief: "South stairway Adam, South Tower."    Ladder 15: "Floor 78?" 					   Battalion Seven Chief: "Ten-four, numerous civilians, we gonna need two engines up here."    					Battalion Seven Chief: "Tower one. Battalion Seven to Ladder 15."    Battalion Seven Chief: "I'm going to need two of your firefighters Adam stairway to knock down two fires. We have a house line stretched we could use some water on it, knock it down, okay."    Ladder 15: "Alright ten-four, we're coming up the stairs. We're on 77 now in the B stair, I'll be right to you."    					Battalion Seven Operations Tower One: "Battalion Seven Operations Tower One to Battalion Nine, need you on floor above 79. We have access stairs going up to 79, kay."    					Battalion Nine: "Alright, I'm on my way up, Orlo."[52] 					    Here, Battalion Chief Palmer calls for more men and water to put out the isolated fires. His expression “10-45 Code Ones” refers to dead bodies, of which apparently there were many. The tape shows that the two firemen were not turned back by heat, smoke, or a wall of flames. They were able to function within the fire zone and were prepared to help the injured and combat the few isolated fires they found. Palmer even mentions that the stairway up to the next level, i.e., floor 79, was passable. Minutes later the building came down on their heads.     NIST knew about this testimony. 05.Jan.2008 https://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article18999.htm In short, NIST flatly contradicts itself regarding the disposition of the SFRM; and this is crucial because it means NIST’s own data fails to support its conclusions.   05.Jan.2008 https://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article18999.htm To make matters worse for the official collapse theory, NIST also found that “the fuel loading in the core areas....was negligible.”[42] It’s easy to understand why all of these facts are downplayed in the NIST summary report. Taken together, they are fatal to NIST’s collapse model, which requires that high temperatures be sustained. Fires that subside after only 15-20 minutes simply cannot weaken enormous steel columns and cause them to buckle.   05.Jan.2008 https://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article18999.htm NIST scientists developed a novel way to evaluate the impact of the fire on the WTC steel. According to the report, the approach was “easy to implement and robust enough to examine the entire component in the field.”[33] They found that the original primer paint used on the steel beams and columns was altered by high heat. This made it possible to determine the level of exposure by analyzing the paint on the samples.[34]  But the results were surprising. NIST found no evidence that any of the steel samples, including those from the impact areas and fire-damaged floors, had reached temperatures exceeding 1,110ºF (600ºC).[35] Sixteen recovered perimeter columns showed evidence of having been exposed to fire, but even so, out of 170 areas examined on these columns only three locations had reached temperatures in excess of 250ºC (450ºF).[36] Moreover, NIST found no evidence that any of the recovered core columns had reached even this minimal temperature.[37] The startling fact is that NIST’s own data failed to support its conclusion that the fires of 9/11 heated up the steel columns, causing them to weaken and buckle. 05.Jan.2008 https://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article18999.htm For example, NIST confirmed that the truss assemblies were not only bolted to the outer perimeter wall, they were also welded, hence, were considerably stronger than expected–––not prone to pancaking.[29] Nor could the pancake model explain the failure of the core columns. 05.Jan.2008 https://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article18999.htm By limiting the scope of its inquiry NIST rendered the truth unobtainable–––an effective way to neuter an investigation.    With all of this in mind, let us now explore what NIST did investigate.    The Special Projects 05.Jan.2008 https://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article18999.htm Strangely, when workmen began to dismantle the badly damaged Deutsch Bank on December 8, 2006, they found more than 700 slivers of bone on the roof and within the structure.[19] This bizarre report has never been explained. 05.Jan.2008 https://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article18999.htm The buildings were not pulverized as they hit the ground, they disintegrated in midair. As the south tower started to collapse, for example, the entire upper section tipped as a unit, then inexplicably turned to dust before our eyes. 05.Jan.2008 https://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article18999.htm After I posted a critique of the NIST report in December 2006, I received a letter from a retired fireman who informed me that over the course of his twenty-odd years of service he had fought many types of fires, involving residential, commercial and industrial structures, including high-rise buildings. He explained that on a number of occasions, when his crew lost the battle to save a structure “some of the times the building would collapse…. in a random, haphazard, piecemeal fashion. Not once,” he wrote, “did I personally witness one of those structures collapsing in the rather controlled...fashion as the WTC towers and Building 7.”[18] 05.Jan.2008 https://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article18999.htm Although the exact time of the collapse of WTC 1 and 2 cannot be determined with precision because of the growing dust cloud, each collapse took approximately 10-12 seconds, only 1-2 seconds slower than the time for a billiard ball to free-fall from the WTC roof to the plaza.  But how can this be? By what special dispensation did the collapsing WTC violate the laws of physics? The reader will search the NIST report in vain for any discussion of this important anomaly. Why not? Obviously. because agency officials made a political decision not to go there. 05.Jan.2008 DARPA Develops Brain Chemical to Replace Sleep   					  					As the line between science fiction and reality becomes increasingly blurry, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has always led the pack in terms of cool, weird, wacky and frightening innovations. Working backwards, NIST scientists searched for evidence that supported their predetermined conclusion. Everything else was ignored or excluded. If it is not already evident to the reader, this is no way to conduct a scientific investigation. NIST then had the audacity to imply that it arrived at its favored collapse model through an exhaustive process of elimination. Most readers who merely browsed NIST’s 2005 Executive Summary probably were not aware that NIST’s stated conclusion was really an assumption. Consider this passage, for example:    “The tragic consequences of the September 11, 2001 attacks were directly attributable to the fact that terrorists flew large jet-fuel laden commercial airliners into the WTC towers. Buildings for use by the general population are not designed to withstand attacks of such severity; building codes do not require building designs to consider aircraft impact.”[4]  05.Jan.2008 US: No need for UN probe into Bhutto slaying : The United States on Wednesday brushed aside calls for a UN investigation into the slaying of Pakistan opposition leader Benazir Bhutto, saying Britain's Scotland Yard now leads the probe and will get "the answers" Pakistan's people deserve. 04.Jan.2008 Madness Compounding Madness - Calls for Intervention in Pakistan -By- Gary Leupp "Al-Qaeda is now as much a Pakistani phenomenon as it is an Arab or foreign element," declares Najam Sethi, editor of Pakistan's Daily Times. Police and officials from the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) have searched the home of Atif Amin for evidence that he passed classified information to the American authors of a book about the worldwide nuclear proliferation network. Amin was in charge of Operation Akin, an investigation into links between British companies and the illegal network run by Abdul Qadeer Khan, a Pakistani scientist who helped build that country's nuclear arsenal. The investigation is the subject of a book recently published in the US, America and the Islamic Bomb: The Deadly Compromise. Its authors, David Armstrong and Joseph Trento, contend that 00.000.2000 Amin uncovered evidence in Dubai of the Khan network's involvement in establishing Libya's nuclear programme but was ordered to drop his inquiries and return home, at the request of the CIA and MI6. The Libyan programme and the Khan network were not exposed and halted until 2003. The book argues that in the intervening three years the network continued to sell nuclear technology and possibly weapons designs to Iran, North Korea and possibly other countries, under the noses of US and British intelligence. 04.Jan.2008 https://journals.democraticunderground.com/lukery/5 In fact, the CIA apparently knew more about the Pakistan program than even Benazir Bhutto when she was Prime Minister . According to Seymour Hersh's fantastic 1993 article in the New Yorker "The question of what Ms. Bhutto knew, or didn’t know, about the bomb would be resolved when she paid a scheduled state visit to Washington in June (1990); at that time she was provided with a detailed briefing by William H. Webster, the C.I.A. director. To dramatize the extent of American knowledge, Webster arranged for Ms. Bhutto to be shown a mockup of a Pakistani nuclear bomb. <...> Mark A. Siegel, a former Carter Administration official and close Bhutto associate, who 00.000.1989 served as Pakistan’s American lobbyist + 00.000.1990 -described her feelings of disbelief upon being briefed by Webster. “The briefing was more detailed” than any information that she, as Prime Minister, had been provided, Siegel said. “It also showed that the military was doing it behind her back.” " 04.Jan.2008 https://journals.democraticunderground.com/lukery/5 Sibel Edmonds Case: Benazir and The 'Islamic' Bomb Posted by lukery in General Discussion Wed Jan 02nd 2008, 02:39 PM According to UPI's Richard Sale: "(Benazir Bhutto) said two things that sealed her fate. She said that if elected PM, she would allow US forces to hunt for bin Laden on Pakistani soil, and that she would allow the Vienna-based IAEA to interrogate the rogue nuclear scientist, AQ Khan about his nuclear smugglings to North Korea, Iran, Libya, etc. After those statements, she had no chance of surviving." There's one small problem: the CIA, the FBI, and Britain's MI6 probably know more about the so-called 'AQ Khan network' than AQ Khan himself. For some reason, the criminals involved in the nuclear black market are still (mostly) walking free - in Pakistan, the US and elsewhere - while those who threatened to expose them - Richard Barlow, Sibel Edmonds, Valerie Plame, and the latest addition, Atif Amin - have been harassed, threatened and gagged. 04.Jan.2008 https://journals.democraticunderground.com/lukery/5 Tropical Paradise? One of AQ Khan's American suppliers was a company called Giza Technologies in New Jersey.... Joe Trento says this of Giza: "So the question is: who is responsible for allowing this to happen? Why wasn’t Giza exposed? Giza wasn’t exposed because it may have been used for other operations in the past. It may have been a front for the U.S intelligence service! <...> It’s outrageous! There’s every evidence that the United States were deeply involved, in not only helping AQ Khan set up the network but aiding Pakistan in getting a nuclear weapon." It is bad enough that Lockheed is selling weapons to a regime that has such close ties to terrorism, but that we have to pay for this purchase is absolutely astonishing. It is even more shocking considering that just 10 days ago, Congress put restrictions on military sales to Pakistan. Someone clearly put some pressure to get this deal passed despite growing concern of Musharraf's violent actions and Congressional restrictions to aid. Who brokered this deal? Was it Jack Abramoff from behind his prison cell who was a paid lobbyist (with our money) to Pakistan? After all, he was helping out with the F16 issue before 9/11. Somehow, maybe the prison element, rules Abramoff out. Was it Lynn Cheney, the Vice President's strange other half, who helped push this deal through? After all, she was on the Board of Directors for Lockheed Martin right up to 9/11. But she has moved on to penning lesbian soft porn, which likely keeps her rather busy. Could it be Dick Cheney's son-in-law, Phillip J. Perry, "who had, while working for a law firm, represented Lockheed with the Department of Homeland Security, had been nominated by Bush to serve as general counsel to the Department of Homeland Security." That all depends on what his current lobbying slate looks like. Is he still a registered lobbyist for Lockheed Martin? I don't know. Do you? With so much secrecy, is it possible to know anything about this all Un-American family? 03.Jan.2008 https://www.cannonfire.blogspot.com/ My apologies to Larisa for quoting her so extensively, but she raises points that nobody else wants to touch right now. Here are the key paragraphs: 27.Mar.2007 -In a report released on- it was disclosed that Pakistan has been rewarded for its warm friendship with Mr. Bush by being made the most favored beneficiary of a new post-9/11 program that the Defense Department informally refers to as the Coalition Support Funds (CSF). CSF sends money to those countries that have helped in the fight against terrorism. According to the report, in the three years that preceded 9/11, Pakistan received $9.1 million in military aid. In the three years after 9/11 it received $4.2 billion in military aid. Only Israel and Egypt received more aid. Before 9/11 Pakistan received less military aid than Estonia or Panama. Since 9/11 Pakistan has received more than $10 billion in overall aid including military aid. 03.Jan.2008 https://www.cannonfire.blogspot.com/ Consider the implications. With that kind of money rolling in from America, would Musharraf or the ISI pull off an assassination (presuming they did it) against the wishes of Bush and Cheney? Why is that kind of dough being paid out to a nation whose intelligence head paid off Mohammed Atta? Why were Osama Bin Laden and many of his Al Qaeda comrades allowed to escape from Afghanistan to Pakistan? Finally, senior agency officials decided that written summaries of prisoners’ answers would suffice. Still, that decision left hundreds of hours of videotape of the two Qaeda figures locked in an overseas safe. Clandestine service officers who had overseen the interrogations began pushing hard to destroy the tapes. But George J. Yet agency officials decided to float the idea of eliminating the tapes on Capitol Hill, hoping for political cover.
