The Neanderthals survived in local pockets during previous Ice Ages, bouncing back when conditions improved.

But the last one appears to have been characterised by several rapid and severe changes in climate which hit a peak 30,000 years ago.

These were probably more dramatic in more northerly parts of Europe, where they may have upset the balance between Neanderthals and modern humans, allowing moderns to gain the upper hand.

Gibraltar's climate was sheltered from many of these changes, but it did eventually deteriorate. Recent deep-sea core data show that temperatures dropped sharply around 24,000 years ago.

This could have created drought-like conditions in the area which may also have reduced the number of prey the Neanderthals could catch.

"If you've got a shrinking Neanderthal population on the edge, it might just be enough to tip them over the edge," Professor Finlayson told BBC News.

Details of the work will be presented here at the Calpe conference, which runs from 14-17 September in Gibraltar.

13.Sep.2006 President Bush Lets Bin Laden Define America’s Foreign Policy Priorities - Payson

For the past few weeks, members of the Bush administration have argued in speeches + television appearances that because al Qaeda views Iraq as a “central front in the war on terror,” America should too.

They are effectively outsourcing our national security strategy to bin Laden. Watch a video compilation:

The facts on the ground, not the opinions of terrorists, should guide our military policy. Iraq has become a distraction from the fight against al Qaeda.

In fact, the bin Laden trail has gone “stone cold” as our soldiers are caught in the middle of sectarian violence in Iraq.

It is time to redeploy our troops out of Iraq to more effectively combat Islamic extremists. Transcript:

06.Sep.2006 BUSH: Well, first of all, I do think Iraq is a central front in the war on terror + so does Osama bin Laden.

12.Sep.2006 SNOW: We are in Iraq. It is now seen as the central focal point of the war on terror by the very people who mounted 11.Sep.2001 th.

05.Sep.2006 BUSH: For al Qaeda, Iraq is not a distraction from their war on America - it is the central battlefield where the outcome of this struggle will be decided.

05.Sep.2006 TOWNSEND: You know, it’s not just the president who has said Iraq is the central front.

Zawahiri has said it’s the central battle front in the war on terror, as has bin Laden.

07.Sep.2006 BUSH: The fighting in Iraq has been difficult + it has been bloody + some say that Iraq is a diversion from the war on terror. The terrorists disagree.

13.Sep.2006 SNOW: And the

11.Sep.2001 -people who initiated the hostilities on- now say that Iraq is the central theater in the war on terror.

BARTLETT: It doesn’t matter the debate we are having about whether Iraq is part of the war on terror or not.

The enemy themselves has said it is. Osama bin Laden, Zawahiri, the number two man of Al Qaida.

31.Aug.2006 They have both said the central front is in Iraq.

31.Aug.2006 BARTLETT:. It doesn’t matter what we debate on this topic. Our enemies believe it’s the central front in the war on terror.

31.Aug.2006 BARTLETT: So, it doesn’t matter what we say.

We should be taking the — the words of the enemy seriously. They think it’s the fight of — of the war on terror, so, we must as well.

13.Sep.2006 https://www.cannonfire.blogspot.com/ Speaking of Diebold:

The Center for Information Technology Policy at Princeton University has released a "Security Analysis of the Diebold AccuVote-TS Voting Machine"

which proves that these machines are about as vulnerable as a naked 19-year-old blonde tied to a bed in the middle of a men's prison where all the guards are snoozing or strung out on dope.

Abstract:

This paper presents a fully independent security study of a Diebold AccuVote-TS voting machine, including its hardware and software. We obtained the machine from a private party.

Analysis of the machine, in light of real election procedures, shows that it is vulnerable to extremely serious attacks. For example, an attacker who gets physical access to a machine or its removable memory card for as little as one minute could install malicious code; malicious code on a machine could steal votes undetectably, modifying all records, logs + counters to be consistent with the fraudulent vote count it creates.

An attacker could also create malicious code that spreads automatically and silently from machine to machine during normal election activities — a voting-machine virus.

We have constructed working demonstrations of these attacks in our lab. Mitigating these threats will require changes to the voting machine's hardware and software and the adoption of more rigorous election procedures.

But do they need computers to do their dirty work? Greg Palast argues otherwise in Armed Madhouse .

The growing Republican drive for photo ID will do a remarkably effective job of keeping poor and minority voters from the polls.

From the Los Angeles Times: One example of the skirmishing came late last month in a federal courtroom in Phoenix, where a Navajo leader, occasionally speaking in his tribal language, testified that thousands of his people would lose their right to cast ballots under a new Arizona law that requires voters to present a photo ID or other proof of identity at the polls.
The leader, Leonard Gorman, testified that many Navajo who spend their lives herding sheep in remote areas cannot fulfill the new requirements because they do not drive, nor do they have mailboxes or even the utility bills that are accepted as alternative forms of identification under the new law.

EXCLUSIVE: Air America To File Bankruptcy, But Progressive Radio Remains Strong - Nico

Air America Radio will announce a major restructuring on Friday, which is expected to include a bankruptcy filing, three independent sources have told ThinkProgress.

Air America could remain on the air under the deal, but significant personnel changes are already in the works.

Sources say five Air America employees were laid off yesterday and were told there would be no severance without capital infusion or bankruptcy.

Also, Air America has ended its relationship with host Jerry Springer.

The right wing is sure to seize on Air America’s financial woes as a sign that progressive talk radio is unpopular.

In fact, Air America succeeded at creating something that didn’t exist: the progressive talk radio format.

That format is now established and strong and will continue with or without Air America.

Indeed, many of the country’s most successful and widely-syndicated progressive talk hosts — Ed Schultz and Stephanie Miller, for instance — aren’t even associated with Air America.

Radio giant Clear Channel is so committed to progressive talk radio that, this week, it will announce a partnership with the Center for American Progress, Jones Radio + MSS Inc.,

to conduct a nationwide search for the next Progressive Talk Radio Star.

10 % sicher + man kann es überall anwenden;

20 %, es wird lebhaft;

50 %, positiv waghalsig;

für 100 % stampft es alle menschlichen Gesetze unter seinen Fuß;

13.Sep.2006 Snow Defends Boehner: He Was ‘Raising The Question, OK, What Do You Want To Do For Security?’ - Judd

On Tuesday, House Majority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) asked whether his political opponents are “more interested in the rights of terrorists than protecting the American people.”

During yesterday’s White House press conference, Tony Snow appeared to distance himself from Boehner’s remarks.

But this morning on ABC, Snow offered a lengthy defense of Boehner’s caustic remarks. Snow said that Boehner’s statement was “one of these hypotheticals” that raises the question “OK, what do you want to do for security?” According to Snow, Boehner’s remarks highlighted legitimate “issues.” Watch it: Transcript:

ROBERTS: Who’s going to keep us safe? That’s something that Americans want to know. And it does get a little contentious at times. The Democrats are very upset over House Majority Leader John Boehner for the comments that he made recently saying that Democrats were soft on terrorism and terrorists. I want to play a bit of his soundbite and get your reaction to what he said.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

U.S. REPRESENTATIVE JOHN BOEHNER, HOUSE MAJORITY LEADER (R-OH): Sometimes, based on the votes that get cast, you wonder whether they’re more interested in the rights of the terrorists than in protecting the American people.

ROBERTS: Are Democrats more interested in the rights of terrorists than protecting the American people? Of course, Democrats are a little outraged about that. Does the president agree with a statement like that? The White House agree with that?

SNOW: Well, we tend not to vet statements of members of the House and Senate. We just pointed out they’ve got their own ways of doing things.

But it’s interesting — what he was really talking about + it was one of these hypotheticals. And, I know — I understand why people get upset about it. But one of the things he was doing is raising the question, OK, what do you want to do for security? Do you believe in listening in on terrorists? What do you think about the terrorist surveillance program?

The president asked for cooperation on that. How about what we do with people detained on the battlefield? How do we proceed to hold them in conditions that are acceptable to the American people, to question them, to get intelligence so that we can glean intelligence that’s going to save American lives? The president last week asked both parties go ahead and step up and help out in those things. So Representative Boehner was raising those issues.

Rep. Jane Harman (D-CA) Calls Out Cheney For Continuing To Push Faulty Intelligence - Amanda

The Bush administration continues to falsely link Saddam Hussein with the 9/11 hijackers.

On Sunday, Tim Russert, host of NBC’s Meet the Press, asked Vice President Cheney if he still believed 9/11 hijacker Mohammed Atta ever met with an Iraqi intelligence official in Prague.

Cheney replied:

We don’t know.

I mean, we’ve never been able to, to, to link it + the FBI + CIA have worked it aggressively.

I would say, at this point, nobody has been able to confirm …

But in fact, we do know.

Today Rep. Jane Harman (D-CA) wrote to Cheney + pointed out at least four reports that have concluded the meeting between Atta + an Iraqi intelligence officer never took place:

Just last Friday, the Senate Intelligence Committee released a report that cites multiple declassified intelligence assessments,

some from as early as mid-2002,

reporting evidence that the meeting did not occur.

In addition, the

9/11 Commission concluded that

“[t]he available evidence does

not

support the original Czech report” of a meeting between Mohammed Atta + an Iraqi officer .

There are also classified assessments on this topic from the Defense Intelligence Agency + the Central Intelligence Agency, dated

20.Mar.2006 +

27.Apr-2006 , respectively.

The evidence is now public +

the facts undisputed that

the Prague meeting

never

happened.

11.Sep.2001 -prior to-There was no provable link between Saddam Hussein + al-Qaeda.

During the same interview, Cheney also continued to falsely cite terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi as the link between pre-war Iraq and al-Qaeda. Digg It!
13.Sep.2006 NEW POLL: Americans View Bolton As Symbol Of Foreign Policy Failures - Amanda

Today the New York Sun reports that a new poll commissioned by the conservative Hudson Institute finds a majority of Americans believe if the United Nations is “no longer effective,” +

if it cannot be reformed, it should be “scrapped altogether.”

Frank Luntz, whose polling firm conducted the survey, said the results show Americans are “one scandal away from washing their hands” of the United Nations.

But an

25.Aug.2006 Mellman Group poll obtained by ThinkProgress shows that Americans do support a strong United Nations, which has been consistently weakened by Bush’s foreign policy.

Some highlights from the poll:

– 60 % of Americans think it is better to work through the United Nations to share burdens and risks. (Compared with 31 % who believe it is better to act decisively and alone.)

– 49 % believe President Bush’s foreign policy has made the USA weaker. (Compared with just 28 % who believe it has made us stronger.)

– 52 % believe Bush’s foreign policy has made relationships with our allies weaker. (Compared with just 23 % who believe it has made them stronger.)

– 61 % believe that over the past few years, other countries’ images of the USA have become more negative. (Compared with just 15 % who believe it has become more positive.)

– 55 % believe it is time to change the course of Bush’s foreign policy. (Compared with 39 % who want to stay the course.)

Luntz’s poll is an effort to boost Bolton’s prospects for confirmation in the Senate. But 64 % of the American public view Bolton as a symbol of America’s foreign policy.
13.Sep.2006 Ignoring Senate Intel Report, Snow Repeats Lie That Saddam Had A Relationship With Zarqawi - Judd

Last Friday, the Senate Intelligence Committee — chaired by Sen. Pat Roberts (R-KS), one of the President’s most loyal allies — concluded that there was absolutely no relationship between Saddam Hussein and al-Qaeda operative Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. Here’s the key quote from page 109:

Saddam Hussein attempted, unsuccessfully, to locate and capture al-Zarqawi and…the regime did not have a relationship with, harbor, or turn a blind eye toward Zarqawi.

Nevertheless, at today’s press briefing, White House Press Secretary Tony Snow insisted Saddam that had a “relationship” because Zarqawi was in the country.

Snow refused to “go into the vagaries of the Senate report.” Watch it:

This is the equivalent of saying that the USA government had a “relationship” with unibomber Ted Kaczynski because he was “operating” in the USA.

The White House’s insistence that Zarqawi had a relationship with Saddam — in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary — borders on pathological. Digg It!

Transcript:

QUESTION: Do you believe — does the president still believe that Saddam Hussein was connected to Zarqawi or Al Qaida before the invasion?

SNOW: The president has never said that there was a direct operational relationship between the two. And this is important.

Zarqawi was in Iraq…

QUESTION: (OFF-MIKE) relationship?

SNOW: And there was a relationship in this sense: Zarqawi was in Iraq. Al Qaida members were in Iraq. They were operating + in some cases operating freely.

From Iraq, Zarqawi, for instance, directed the assassination of an American diplomat in Amman, Jordan.

But did they have, you know, a corner office at the Mukhabarat? No. You know, were they getting a line item in Saddam’s budget? No.

There was no direct operational relationship, but there was a relationship. They were in the country. And I think you understand that the Iraqis knew they were there. That’s the relationship.

QUESTION: Saddam Hussein knew they were there. That’s it for the relationship?

SNOW: That’s pretty much it.

QUESTION: The Senate report said they didn’t turn a blind eye to that.

SNOW: The Senate report — rather than get — you know what? I don’t want to get into the vagaries of the Senate report. But it is pretty clear, among other things, again, that were Al Qaida operators inside Iraq + they included Zarqawi, they included a cleric who had been described as the best friend of bin Laden who was delivering sermons on TV.

But we are simply not going to go to the point that the president — the president has never made the statement that there was an operational relationship +

that’s the important thing, because I think there’s a tendency to say, Ah-ha. He said that they were in cahoots and they were planning and doing stuff. There’s no evidence of that.

National Review Editor: ‘People Would React Favorably’ To Escalating Troop Levels In Iraq - Faiz

In a Washington Post editorial today, Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol and National Review editor Rich Lowry call for an escalation in Iraq.

Appearing on Fox News to reinforce the argument, Lowry claimed that if Bush were to say, “we’re going to send two more divisions into the city [Baghdad] and lock it down and secure it… people would actually react favorably to that.” Watch it.

Kristol and Lowry state, “The bottom line is this: More U.S. troops in Iraq would improve our chances of winning a decisive battle at a decisive moment.” Their argument is wrong on many levels.

First, there is no indication from public polling that there is any U.S. support for increasing troop levels in Iraq. A recent ABC News/Washington Post poll found that only 17 % of Americans supported increasing force levels, while 53 % favored decreasing them.

Second, the argument wrongly suggests that violence in Iraq is constricted to Baghdad. In fact, as the senior Marine intelligence officer in charge of Western Iraq reported, the political and economic security situation there is — like Baghdad — rapidly destabilizing.

Third, escalation is the wrong remedy to the problem because it fails to understand the root cause of the problem. Increasing troop levels feeds the perception that the U.S. is in Iraq to stay, thereby fueling the insurgency. Moreover, the numerous increases in troop levels throughout the occupation have not improved security on the ground.

More from Glenn Greenwald and Matthew Yglesias.

Full transcript:

HOST: And you and Bill Kristol wrote a piece suggesting we need more troops in iraq. If the president were to call for that right now, what do you think the reaction would be?

LOWRY: Well, I have a view that’s counter to the conventional wisdom on that. I think what is dragging Bush down on Iraq is that the people are not convinced that he has a plan for victory there.

And I think if he frankly acknowledged the crisis situation on the ground in Baghdad as he has begun to, he has used the word crisis in the speech recently + said look this is how we will deal with it, we’re going to send two more divisions into the city and lock it down and secure it + I think people would actually react favorably to that.

And the one encouraging thing in Iraq despite all the distressing news is in those neighbors in Baghdad that are intensely patrolled by Americans, they are more secure and we are able to make progress when we have the guys on the ground to do it. And I just believe we need more guys on the ground.

13.Sep.2006 Hastert Too Busy To Commemorate 11.Sep.2001 Until September 13 - Judd

Yesterday was the five-year anniversary of the terrorist attacks of 11.Sep.2001, but House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert had other priorities.

According to a report in CongressDaily, he wasn’t able to schedule a vote “on a resolution to commemorate the day” until 13.Sep.2006

Meanwhile, the House will have time today to consider:

– A bill to revise the boundaries of John H. Chafee Coastal Barrier Resources System Jekyll Island Unit

– The Lake Mattamuskeet Lodge Preservation Act

– A bill to designate the facility of the USA Postal Service located at 40 South Walnut Street in Chillicothe, Ohio, as the “Larry Cox Post Office.”

Moreover, Hastert has packed the 9/11 resolution with partisan rhetoric:

[The resolution includes] language stating that “the nation is safer than it was back in 11.Sep.2001,” along with five paragraphs of language referencing a host of measures approved by Congress + signed into law by President Bush since the attacks, including the controversial USA PATRIOT Act…

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has twice written Hastert requesting the resolution not be politicized; she recommended using a resolution modeled after last year’s version, which did not include references to specific bills. But a Hastert spokesman said yesterday “the GOP leadership was not negotiating and that the measure would remain as written.” Digg It!

For decades in Iraq, marriages between Sunnis and Shiites were considered “as ordinary as the daily call to prayer” and “the glue that held a fragile multi-ethnic society together.” But

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, responding to an Iranian offer to suspend its uranium enrichment efforts for two months,

Since the evidence from the World Trade Center site was quickly removed,

there is little concrete evidence of the involvement of Dov Zakheim,

who has since left his position at the Pentagon.

However,

the proximity of Eglin AFB to MacDill AFB in Florida + Dov Zakheim's work via SPC contracts + the Pentagon leasing agreement on both of these installations,

combined with SPC's access to World Trade Center structural + security information from their Tridata investigation 00.000.1993 is highly suspicious.

Considering his access to Boeing 767 tankers,

remote control flight systems +

his published views in the PNAC document,

it seems very likely he is in fact a key figure in the alleged terrorist attacks in New York City on 11.Sep.2001 .https://onlinejournal.com/artman/publish/article_1047.shtml...

I respectfully disagree with Derek ,who thinks that the Bush administration is too incompetent to pull a 9/11 off.

Derek,we just had our president confess that the CIA is torutring people, after denying it.

We just had him admitting that Saddam had nothing to do with 9/11,after they made a great majority of Americans believe that he WAS involved somehow.

Our Vice President just revealed that even if Saddam had no WMD

the US still would have invaded-which tosses all those impassioned speeches,

the UN presentation by Powell, the 'mushroom clouds'in Condi's poisoned mind into the GARBAGE.

We've had Bush laying wreaths + making solemn speeches about the victime of 9/11 - the 9/11 that he didn't want investigated.

10.Sep.2001 We've had Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld say that the Pentagon could not account for $2.3 TRILLION dollars.

We have a report titled

Rebuilding America's Defenses

that explains how we need a catastrophic , catalyzing event to transform our military, with the signatures of support from Rumsfeld + Cheney +Wolfowitz+ Perle +Libby + a few others, including Jeb Bush.

We've ebven had Rummy PREDICTING that something "significantly shocking" would occur that would make us see why we need a "strong healthy Department of Defense".

Do you know when he "predicted" that?

AT AN 8AM BREAKFAST MEETING ON THE MORNING OF THE ATTACKS.

And we STILL don't know what Bush + Cheney told the 9/11 Commission.
My point is that these crazoids have been lying, lying, lying to the world the entire time they were shoehorned into power by the Supreme Court.

Did they all decide to tell the truth on 9/11?

"Incompetnece" makes a great cover for things that they want and/or plan to happen.

While we think they're too dumb to do it,

they've already done it - and

have moved on to the next thing that we think they're too dumb to pull off.

There is a mountain of coincidences,

abnormal procedures, +

circumstantial evidence

to not count the administration out as being "in" on it.

Let us turn our tear-filled eyes away from the noble Leader's sentimental journey through the three sites of mass murder in which his greatness is firmly rooted + look for a moment to Mesopotamia, to the great and ancient land of Babylon, where the noble Leader has bestowed – entirely unasked, an act of purest noblesse oblige – the benefits of liberation, democracy and the free market. 13.Sep.2006 War Stories -By Elias Khoury
I stood before the ruins + the tears flowed. No, it was before that scene that I stood, when the people carried the coffins walking over the rubble with the dust of death blanketing them. I couldn't feel the tears collecting at the edges of my eyes, burning them, before they fell on my cheeks. The dust covered us under the burning sun, the sweat trickling out of our pores and spreading over our bodies. I didn't realise I was crying when I did. I had never experienced weeping that came out of the whole body, mixing tears and sweat.

13.Sep.2006 Fox News Reports — And Decides: America Is Safer - Payson

During its coverage of the 9/11 anniversary yesterday and today, Fox News examined the question: “Are we safer five years after the attacks?” Their answer: a resounding yes. Watch it:

National security and terrorism experts disagree. A recent bipartisan survey by the Center for American Progress and Foreign Policy magazine found that 86 % of the surveyed experts believe the world is now more dangerous + 84 % believe the USA is losing the war on terror.

The public agrees. Just 14 % of Americans feel safer now than they did five years ago.

Transcript:

- BUSH: Many Americans look at these events and ask the same question, five years after 9/11, are we safer? The answer is yes.

- FOX NEWS ANCHOR: The president says, as he has said repeatedly this week, that we are safer than we were prior to the 9/11 attacks. However, we are not completely safe.

- RICE: We are safer, but we are not yet safe.

- FOX NEWS ANCHOR: A reminder, as Condi Rice said to Fox yesterday, that while we are much safer since 9/11, we are not safe yet.

- ELIZABETH MCDONALD: Look, anybody who says we’re not safer now is just politicizing the issue.

- FOX NEWS GUEST: And we do tend to forget what happened on 9/11, but we do, I think, feel safer. At least, Americans seem to feel safer now than they did, you know, right afterwards.

- OLIVER NORTH: Let me go around the horn with each one of you, because you are the experts in your field. The question on the minds of everybody five years after this attack is: are we safer? Jennifer, are we safer as a country?

GRIFFIN: In the USA, it’s a much safer and more secure environment. [snip]

HERRIDGE: I’d say we’re safer in large part we’re able to choke off the money for groups like al Qaeda. [snip]

ROSEN: So on the whole, I think objectively, we would have to conclude that yes we are safer than we were on September 10th, 2001.

NORTH: Brett Baier, you get the last word. Safer or not?

BAIER: Ollie, I think we’re safer as a nation and I think the president has mentioned this many times - we’re safe, but not yet completely safe.

- CARD: I think we are definitely safer than we were on September 10th, 2001.

- WALLACE: All of us have our own thoughts about the last five years, where are we on the war on terror?

HUME: We’re certainly safer. I think that’s clear.

The 9/11 Timeline - Think Progress

To mark the five-year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, ThinkProgress has created a comprehensive timeline documenting the key events since 11.Sep.2001 . Our timeline charts five threads:

– The steady increase in international terrorism and the growth of al Qaeda
– The campaign to block and obstruct the work of the 9/11 Commission + the failure to carry out the commission’s recommendations
– The failure to stablize and rebuild Afghanistan
– The downgrading of the hunt for Osama bin Laden
– The steady decline of America’s image abroad

Check out the timeline HERE. (We also have a timeline detailing the war in Iraq.) If there is something important we missed, let us know in the comments section or send us an email. DiggIt!
13.Sep.2006 9/11 Commission Vice Chair: Path to 9/11 Is ‘Not Good For the Country’ - Think Progress

In his first public comments about the matter, former Vice Chairman of the 9/11 Commission, Lee Hamilton, said he was not asked to participate in the production of ABC’s The Path to 9/11, noting it is one of the few instances that he has not been asked to participate with Kean on a project related to the Commission’s work. He condemned the docudrama, saying that to fudge the distinction between news and entertainment “is not good for the country.” Watch it: Digg It!

Transcript:

I was not asked to participate in the ABC production. As far as I can remember Tom, it’s about the only time when — you and I were asked to do so many things together — they didn’t ask me to participate in this. I didn’t even know about it. Tom mentioned on one or two occassions that he was advising ABC + I didn’t pay much attention to it.

After there was a screening on a Sunday night as I recall, which I did not attend, I got calls from several Democrats who objected very strongly to the way in which Sandy Berger and Madeleine Albright and even president clinton were portrayed. As it was described to me then, I thought that the letter signed by Bruce Lindsey and Mr. Doug Band, I think it is, was accurate in their criticisms of ABC. That they portrayed Sandy Berger and Madeleine Albright doing things that they did not in fact do.

Now, ABC presents this as I understand it — I did not see it last night either — as a docudrama. I don’t like the ring of that. It is either a documentary or it is a drama. And to fudge it causes me a great deal of concern and suggests to me that news and entertainment are getting dangerously intertwined. And I do not think that that is good for the country. Because an event of this consequence is very hard to understand + to distort it or to not present it factually in this kind of presentation I think does not serve the country well.

welcome to screw loose change video

Welcome to the index site of the Screw Loose Change video, not related to the Screw Loose Change Blog or the Screw Loose Change MySpace.  Here you will find information that counters the "evidence" that the popular film Loose Change presents and my own subtitled version of the film that goes through each and every statement in Loose Change 2nd edition.  By using their own words and film, Screw Loose Change debunks the theories presented in Loose Change.

You can view a much more detailed analysis of the Loose Change 2nd Edition video by reading Mark Robert's Viewer Guide.  This was my main source and inspiration of the video. why create this site?

The reason why I went through the trouble of creating a subtitled version of Loose Change and this website is because I am a firm believer of facts and evidence.  I do not care for vague assumptions, theories, or possibilities + neither should you.  When you try to label the government for being a butcher and slaughtering 3000 of his own people, you better provide concrete evidence to back that up.

The Big Lie Strategy

The single biggest component of the strategy of exploiting people's weaknesses for the cover-up was to make the attack so outrageous that most people would refuse to even consider that it could be the work of insiders. This principle of deception was well understood by one of the most successful mass-murderers in history: Adolf Hitler, who articulated it in his prison diary, Mein Kampf.

e x c e r p t

title: Big_Lie: Mein Kampf extract

authors: Adolf Hitler

All this was inspired by the principle - which is quite true in itself - that in the big lie there is always a certain force of credibility; because the broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in the deeper strata of their emotional nature than consciously or voluntarily; and thus in the primitive simplicity of their minds they more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small lie, since they themselves often tell small lies in little matters but would be ashamed to resort to large-scale falsehoods. It would never come into their heads to fabricate colossal untruths + they would not believe that others could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously. Even though the facts which prove this to be so may be brought clearly to their minds, they will still doubt and waver and will continue to think that there may be some other explanation.

Kean promises major revelations in public testimony beginning next month from top officials in the FBI, CIA, Defense Department, National Security Agency and, maybe, President Bush and former President Clinton.

For the first time, the chairman of the independent commission investigating the

11.Sep.2001 attacks is saying publicly that

11.Sep.2001 could have + should have been prevented, reports CBS News Correspondent Randall Pinkston .
"This is a very, very important part of history and we've got to tell it right," said Thomas
Kean.
"As you read the report, you're going to have a pretty clear idea what wasn't done and what should have been done," he said.

"This was not something that had to happen."

The attacks of 9/11 were accomplished through an amazing orchestration of logistics + personnel.

Former national security aide and counter-terror advisor Richard Clarke has postulated that such a conspiracy could never be kept a secret.

Too many people would have been involved, he said.

On this point I disagree with Clarke completely +

point to the fact that

the Manhattan Project, which developed the atom bomb +

the stealth fighter project

were both successfully kept secret.

The numbers of people involved in both of those projects far exceeded the numbers of people within the USA government required to execute 9/11.

So the near-capture of bin Laden in this docudrama is a “composite?”

A “composite” of what?

“Composite” implies that they condensed things THAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED in order to make the story either more exciting or fit into a time constraint.

If things never happened, they are not composites, they are fabrication.

Here’s an example Kean might better understand.

I plan to make a docudrama about a former male Kean intern + all the responsibilities that intern had.

I then claim one of those responsibilities included this intern mounting Kean and riding him like a bucking bronco, thrice weekly, for the duration of that young man’s internship.

And when people closest to Kean called him up to ask if he was indeed using his intern as a well-oiled boy toy, why, Tommy just HUNG UP the phone! Do you believe him? What NERVE!

If I made THAT movie, Kean would raise holy hell, no matter how much I defended myself by saying “But…it’s a COMPOSITE of that intern’s responsibilities!

I’m not CLAIMING this is 100% fact!

It’s a COMPOSITE!

Watch the movie!

And then we can discuss our differences of opinion as to whether this intern made Kean squeal like a school girl dozens of times!”

Kean would be livid! Kean would try to sue me for every cent I had and more! Why? Because it’s not a “composite” of events if some of those events never happened!

OOOoooohhhhhh…aaaaaahhhhh…see, NOW it might make sense to ya, Tommy Boy.

Kean has always known that the 9/11 report he helped to write is a complete whitewash of what actually occured > he is an accomplice in lying to the American people to cover-up a heinous crime that most likely was/is a government instigated conspiracy, so now Kean in conjunction with ABC is trying to brainwash baloney into the minds of children and adults who are slow-witted {meaning most Bush lovers}!

Moore's last documentary -- which came out quite a few months before the 2004 election -- was a feature film that never promised to present an unbiased view of 9/11.

It was funded and released by a major film studio and people could choose whether or not they wanted to shell out $10 to see it at Showcase.

ABC's 9/11 docudrama, on the otherhand, reportedly tries to play itself as a unbiased view of the events + it being aired two months before the election on one of the three original major networks.

Even people without cable have access to watch this docudrama. And while people can choose whether or not they want to watch it, the fact is that a feature which plays for free on everyone's television -- that's been heavily advertised as a special event -- is going to be seen. Especially since a $10 ticket price is not included.

One person, one vote. Count the totals. The one with the most wins. The beauty of democracy is its simplicity and its inherent fairness. It equalises everyone, even as it empowers everyone. What could go wrong? In America, it turns out, quite a lot.

Everyone remembers the debacle in Florida, 2000. The recounts, the law suits and the eventual deciding of a presidential election - not by the voters - but by the Supreme Court. The memory still causes a collective shudder to America's body politic.

11.Sep.2006 Path to 9/11 Trounced By Football, Ties CBS Rerun - Think Progress

Apparently, there isn’t a big audience for myths about 9/11. Preliminary ratings information show that Path to 9/11 was not only trounced by Sunday Night Football, it only managed to tie a rerun of a CBS documentary about 9/11. A summary: SHOW RATING SHARE
NFL Football (NBC) 15.1 23
9/11 (CBS, rerun) 8.2 12
Path to 9/11 (ABC) 8.2 12

Looks like predictions that the effort to correct Path to 9/11’s inaccuracies would improve ABC’s ratings were wrong.

11.Sep.2006 McCain Distorts Polling Data, Labels Bush’s Iraq Critics ‘Schizophrenics’ - Faiz

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) repeated his false assertion yesterday that most Americans oppose a timetable for Iraq withdrawal, but went further in criticizing the American public,

calling them “schizophrenic” about their position on Iraq:

“Americans are really kind of schizophrenic about this issue,” Mr. McCain said just prior to a fund-raising lunch for Rep. Dan Lungren, a Republican of California. “They’re frustrated + they want us to get out, but if we ask the American people if we should set a certain date or a calendar, they agree with the president + with me + with Dan, that is a recipe for disaster. We have to have conditions on the ground that indicate we can withdraw.”

As ThinkProgress has previously documented, a majority of Americans reject Bush’s “stay the course” policy and want the U.S. to set a timetable for the withdrawal of forces from Iraq. Rather than exhibiting waffling attitudes about the war, polling data has shown an unmistakably clear trend in recent months. Mystery Pollster writes, “Looking at the questions pollsters are now asking about prospective Iraq policy, I see fewer differences and far more consistency, a finding that may reflect a gradual hardening of opinion.”

Evidence is emerging from Africa that colours were being used in a symbolic way perhaps 200,000 years ago, a UK scientist working in the region claims.

Lawrence Barham has been studying tools and other artefacts left by ancient humans at a site in Zambia.

He says the range of mineral pigments, or ochres, found there hints at the use of paint, perhaps to mark the body.

If correct, it would push back the earliest known example of abstract thinking by at least 100,000 years.

Being able to conceptualise - the ability to let one thing represent another - was a giant leap in human evolution.

It was the mental activity that would eventually permit the development of sophisticated language and maths.

11.Sep.2006 Thank You For Fighting For The Truth - Judd

Last week, nearly 100,000 of you came to ThinkProgress and wrote to Bob Iger — President and CEO of the Walt Disney Company — demanding ABC tell the truth about 9/11. Tens of thousands more wrote Disney Chairman George Mitchell and ABC affiliates. You had an impact:

ABC stopped marketing Path to 9/11 as “based on the 9/11 report.”

– An extended disclaimer report ran three times during the first night alone.

Scholastic stopped promoting Path to 9/11 to students.

– Prominent media commentators, including many conservatives, spoke out against the film.

Substantial edits were made to the film.

In short, you accomplished a tremendous amount in less than a week.

Nevertheless, we remain disappointed that ABC decided to air several false and defamatory scenes. 9/11 is too important not to get it 100% right.

But ABC and the rest of the media now know that there is a large group of people out there who care deeply about the truth.

Cheney: War Critics Abet Terrorists - Judd

Yesterday on Meet the Press, Vice President Cheney accused critics of the administration’s policies of assisting terrorists. Cheney said that the strategy of the terrorists is “to break our will.”

According to Cheney, terrorists “are encouraged, obviously, when they see the kind of debate that we’ve had in the USA, suggestions, for example, that we should withdraw U.S. forces from Iraq.”

The debate “validates the strategy of the terrorists.” Watch it: Digg it! Transcript:

CHENEY: The basic proposition for our adversaries–and we ought to take a minute and focus on it–they, they want to re-create the old caliphate that stretched from Spain all the way around to Southeast Asia.

They want to topple the regimes that are there today, they want to kick the U.S. out of that part of the world, destroy Israel, equip themselves with weapons of mass destructions, etc. In the course of doing that, their strategy for doing that is to break our will. They can’t beat us in a stand-up fight, they never have, but they’re absolutely convinced they can break our will. The American people don’t have the stomach for the fight.

So you look at situation today in Afghanistan or even in Iraq + you’ve got people who have doubts. They want to know whether or not if they stick their heads up, the USA, in fact, is going to be there to complete the mission. And those doubts are encouraged, obviously, when they see the kind of debate that we’ve had in the USA, suggestions, for example, that we should withdraw U.S. forces from Iraq, simply feed into that whole notion, validates the strategy of the terrorists.

Their aim is to “turn the large and powerful conservative Christian constituency into a voting block united behind making the reduction of greenhouse gases a top priority among politicians.”

Al Qaeda’s second-in-command Ayman al-Zawahiri released a videotape to coincide with the fifth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, underscoring the fact that he still has not been caught.

Addressing the West, Zawahiri said, “Your leaders are hiding from you the true extent of the disaster.”

“The rates of homicide and firearm violence jumped 00.000.2005 , ending a decadelong decline, according to a new U.S. Justice Department report.”

The National Crime Victimization Survey found that nationwide, homicides increased 4.8 %, from 16,140 00.000.2004 to 16,910 last year.

Afghanistan’s ambassador to the U.S., Said Jawad, “called yesterday for more military and economic help from the West , citing a spike in terrorist activity in the past six months and fears that it could spread.”

A growing number of CIA counterterrorism officers are insuring themselves against possible civil lawsuits. “The new enrollments reflect heightened anxiety at the CIA that officers may be vulnerable to accusations they were involved in abuse, torture, human rights violations and other misconduct.”

11.Sep.2006 Report: Saddam and Al Qaeda Enemies, Not Collaborators - Faiz

On 11.Sep.2001, Bush articulated the so-called Bush Doctrine: “We will make no distinction between the terrorists who committed these acts and those who harbor them.”

Declassified portions of the Senate Intelligence Committee’s Phase II report released Friday make definitively clear that Iraq never qualified for inclusion in the Doctrine.

Al Qaeda was responsible for the 9/11 terrorist acts.

Key portions of the new Intel Committee report indicate that Bush attacked an Iraqi regime that not only lacked an operational relationship with al Qaeda, but was hostile toward the terrorist network.

By making the strategic mistake of attacking Iraq, Bush’s policy accomplished the goals of the al Qaeda network. Here’s what the report says:

[Bin] Ladin generally opposed collaboration [with Baghdad]. (p. 65)

According to debriefs of multiple detainees — including Saddam Hussein and former Deputy Prime Minister Tariq Aziz — and capture documents, Saddam did not trust al-Qa’ida or any other radical Islamist group + did not want to cooperate with them. (p. 67)

Aziz underscored Saddam’s distrust of Islamic extremists like bin Ladin, stating that when the Iraqi regime started to see evidence that Wahabists had come to Iraq, “the Iraqi regime issued a decree aggressively outlawing Wahabism in Iraq and threatening offenders with execution.” (p. 67)

Another senior Iraqi official stated that Saddam did not like bin Ladin because he called Saddam an “unbeliever.” (p.73)

Conclusion 1: … Postwar findings indicate that Saddam Hussein was distrustful of al-Qa’ida and viewed Islamic extremists as a threat to his regime, refusing all requests from al Qa’ida to provide material or operational support. Debriefings of key leaders of the former Iraqi regime indicate that Saddam distrusted Islamic radicals in general + al Qa’ida in particular… Debriefings also indicate that Saddam issued a general order that Iraq should not deal with al Qa’ida. No postwar information suggests that the Iraqi regime attempted to facilitate a relationship with bin Ladin. (p. 105)

Conclusion 5:…

Postwar information indicates that Saddam Hussein attempted, unsuccessfully, to locate and capture al-Zarqawi and that the regime did not have a relationship with, harbor, or turn a blind eye toward Zarqawi. (p. 109)

11.Sep.2006 Cheney Ignores Senate Intel Report, Cites Zarqawi As Evidence of Iraq/Al Qaeda Connection - Judd

On Friday, the Senate Intelligence Committee released a report that concluded there was no relationship between Saddam Hussein and Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. According to the report, “a CIA assessment in October 2005 concluded that Hussein’s government ‘did not have a relationship, harbor, or turn a blind eye toward Zarqawi and his associates.’” In fact, Hussein tried to capture Zarqawi.

This morning on Meet the Press, Cheney repeatedly cited Zarqawi as the link between pre-war Iraq and al-Qaeda. When Tim Russert mentioned the Senate Intelligence Committee report, Cheney said he “hadn’t seen it.” Watch it: Digg It! Transcript:

Rice: ‘There Were Ties Going On Between Al Qaeda And Saddam Hussein’ - Amanda

Today on Fox News Sunday, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice repeated the false assertion that Saddam Hussein and Al Qaeda had a relationship before the 2003 invasion, despite the recent Senate Intelligence Report that found U.S. intelligence analysts strongly dispute that claim. Watch it:

Rice tried to pin the blame on then CIA Director George Tenet, saying he said, “there were ties going on between Al Qaeda and Saddam Hussein’s regime going back for a decade.” But in July, Tenet told the Senate Intelligence Committee that “the White House pressured him and that he agreed to back up the administration’s case for war despite his own agents’ doubts about the intelligence it was based on.”

Rice also tried to dismiss the Senate report as being after-the fact, stating, “Now, are we learning more now that we have access to people like Saddam Hussein’s intelligence services? Of course.” But as Wallace pointed out, a

00.Feb.2002 Defense Intelligence Agency report from — before the U.S. invasion — also concluded that Iraq + Al Qaeda had no relationship:

“Iraq is unlikely to have provided bin Laden any useful CB, that’s chemical or biological, knowledge or assistance.”

Rice said she did not remember seeing that report. Digg It! Full transcript below:

WALLACE: I want to discuss just one area, the issue of whether Iraq helped Al Qaeda with weapons of mass destruction. Here’s what the President said in October of 2002.

[BUSH VIDEO]: We’ve learned that Iraq has trained Al Qaeda members in bomb-making, in poisons + deadly gases.

WALLACE: And in

00.Mar.2003 -just before the invasion- you said, talking about Iraq, “a very strong link to training Al Qaeda in chemical and biological techniques.”

Secretary Rice, a Senate committee has just revealed that in

00.Feb.2002 -months before the President spoke-, more than a year, 13 months before you spoke,

that the Defense Intelligence Agency concluded this + let’s put it up on the screen:

“Iraq is unlikely to have provided bin Laden any useful CB, that’s chemical or biological, knowledge or assistance.”

Didn’t you and the President ignore intelligence that contradicted your case?

RICE: What the President + I + other administration officials relied on + - you simply rely on the Director of Central Intelligence.

George Tenet gave that very testimony, that there were ties going on between Al Qaeda + Saddam Hussein’s regime going back for a decade.

Indeed,

the 9/11 Commission talked about contacts between the two.

We know that Zarqawi was running a poisons network in Iraq.

We know that Zarqawi ordered the killing of an American diplomat in Jordan from Iraq.

There were ties between Iraq and Al Qaeda.

Now, are we learning more now that we have access to people like Saddam Hussein’s intelligence services?

Of course. We’re going to learn more.

WALLACE: Secretary Rice, this report — if I may, this report isn’t now.

This isn’t after the fact.

This was a Defense Intelligence Agency report 00.000.2002.

Two questions.

First of all, did you know about that report before you made your statement?

RICE: Chris, we relied on the reports of the National Intelligence Office, the NIO + of the DCI.

That’s what the President + his central decisionmakers rely on.

WALLACE: Did you know about this report?

RICE: There are conflicting intelligence reports all the time.

That’s why we have an intelligence system that brings those together into a unified assessment by the intelligence committee of what — community of what we’re looking at.

That particular report I don’t remember seeing.

9/11 Commissioner Lehman On Path to 9/11: ‘If You Don’t Like The Hits On the Clinton Administration, Welcome to the Club’ - Judd

Today on ABC, former 9/11 Commissioner John Lehman (R) defended Path to 9/11.

Lehman said, “if you don’t like the hits to the Clinton administration, well, welcome to the club.” According to Lehman, any defamatory material is acceptable because conservatives “have lived with Michael Moore” and “most of Hollywood.” Watch it: Transcript:

LEHMAN: I think that it certainly should go forward. I’m told it’s equally harsh against the Bush administration, in fact, both Bush administrations and even back to Reagan for not retaliating against early strikes, so absolutely it should go forward + if you don’t like the hits to the Clinton administration, well, welcome to the club. Republicans have lived with Michael Moore and Oliver Stone and most of Hollywood as a fact of life.

Senate Intel Committee Report Proves Bush Still Isn’t Telling the Truth - Guest

Long delayed, heavily censored and only partially complete, the new Senate Intelligence Committee report is still devastating to the administration: President Bush, Vice-President Cheney and other senior officials systematically misled the American public on the ties between Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden.

The two sections of the report released late Friday also shows finally and definitively that there were not any nuclear, biological or chemical weapons in Iraq at the time President Bush ordered U.S. troops to invade the country; that there were no programs to produce such weapons; and that the programs had been shut down years earlier.

The report also reveals for the first time that the CIA’s own internal review concluded last fall that there was no pre-war connection between Saddam and Al Qaeda leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.

Committee Vice-Chairman Senator Jay Rockefeller (D.-AK) summed it up:

The Committee’s investigation into prewar intelligence on Iraq has revealed that the Bush Administration’s case for war in Iraq was fundamentally misleading. The Administration pursued a deceptive strategy of using intelligence reporting that the Intelligence community had already warned was uncorroborated, unreliable + in critical instances, fabricated.

The deceptions continue. On August 21, President Bush, who must have known about the CIA review and the Committee report, again claimed that Saddam Hussein “had relations with Zarqawi.”
11.Sep.2006 New York Times corrects the record. - Judd

Remember this post? Looks like someone was listening: “The TV Watch column in Weekend yesterday, about the ABC mini-series The Path to 9/11, referred incorrectly to a conclusion of the commission that investigated the terror attacks. The commission said the accusation that President Clinton had ordered air strikes against Osama bin Laden in August 1998 to distract attention from the Monica Lewinsky scandal was one of several factors that ‘likely had a cumulative effect on future decisions about the use of force’ against Mr. bin Laden. It did not conclude that the scandal distracted the Clinton administration from the terrorist threat.”

11.Sep.2006 Taliban Resurgence Restricting Women’s Freedoms In Afghanistan - Amanda

Since the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan, President Bush has repeatedly stated that women’s rights are flourishing in that country:

“Three years ago, the smallest displays of joy were outlawed. Women were beaten for wearing brightly-colored shoes . … Today, we witness the rebirth of a vibrant Afghan culture.” [6/15/04]

“In January, Afghans approved a new constitution that protects the right of all Afghan citizens, including women .” [5/18/04]

But CBS News correspondent Lara Logan’s Sept. 5 broadcast from the Ghazni province cast a different picture. Two years ago, the U.S. military took Logan to the area to highlight its success. She was free to wear Western clothing. In her most recent broadcast, Logan noted that Ghazni is now controlled by the Taliban and when visiting, she was forced to “cover everything but my eyes.” Watch it:

A recent study by the U.N. Development Fund for Women found that while women have had some gains since the fall of the Taliban, acts of domestic violence against women are still “happening with impunity” and women “are often still regarded as second-class citizens.” Full transcript below:

Our tense journey into Taliban territory followed six months of negotiations with their commanders. Their nervous liaison insisted I cover everything but my eyes. [snip]

Finally arriving to this — more than 100 Taliban fighters — America’s enemy — brazenly flaunting their weapons in broad daylight.

Men of all ages, many trained over the border inside Pakistan, out of reach of U.S. forces, where the Taliban has been able to reorganize and rearm.

Their senior commander defiantly declared them stronger and more popular than they were before the U.S. invasion. That’s a far cry from what I found last time I came to Ghazni.

The U.S. military brought me here more than two years ago to show off how they’d driven the Taliban out. Now the Taliban were showing off their success in taking back some of that ground.

Don Abbott, of Command Emergency Response Training, walks over to the Pentagon and extinguishes the flames.

11.Sep.2006 Bank Accounts of 5,000 UK Terror Suspects Tracked - Zonk 124 - Juha-Matti Laurio writes to mention an article over at the

Guardian, reporting on the surveillance of over 5,000 bank accounts in the interests of terrorist tracking. Accounts at such reputable British banks as HSBC, Barclay + Lloyds TSB are having their activity tracked for 'suspicious activity'. Financial details from these banks, it turns out, was part of the trail of evidence used to apprehend terrorism suspects in a plot to bomb airplanes last month. From the article: "However, the extent of the banks' involvement in neutering the terrorist threat has sparked a fierce backlash from some British Muslims amid claims of mistaken identities and the persecution of innocent account-holders. Ahmed Salama was stunned when his HSBC account was frozen nine days ago. He received a letter informing him that HSBC wished to end their relationship after 11 years. The decision left Salama unable to pay 12 bills and his mortgage. Despite repeatedly asking for an explanation, HSBC has only told him it detected 'suspicious' payments in his account."

It may already be too late. Bin Laden has evolved into more of a symbol than an operator, some argue.

Maulana Muhammad Alam, a radical preacher in the Dir valley, 80 miles above Peshawar, says:

"Osama is not the name of an individual; it's a movement ...

Osama is the right of every individual to fight and defend Islam."

And anyway, his deputy Ayman al-Zawahiri, is the true brains of the outfit.

Scheuer disagrees.

"This business that he's the puppet + Zawahiri is the string-puller is completely wrong.

Bin Laden is dangerous because he is talented.

He is a genuinely historic personality."
11.Sep.2006
https://www.guardian.co.uk/print/0,,329573432-111026,00.html

The other wild card in the Bin Laden puzzle is Pakistan.

Cynics accuse the country's powerful ISI intelligence agency of, at best, not looking very hard for him and, at worst, helping him out, a notion that Pakistan angrily rejects.

Officials point to the 600 al-Qaida suspects they have killed or detained, including the 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Muhammad, now being transferred to Guantánamo Bay for trial.

"They are on the run," Musharraf told me during an interview at his office last April.

"Wherever we locate them, we hit them."

Intelligence cooperation with America is close.

When an American Predator drone fired missiles at a mud-walled house in Bajaur last year - thinking, mistakenly, that Ayman al-Zawahiri, Bin Laden's deputy, was inside - Musharraf protested loudly.

In fact, he had approved of the strike in advance. "For domestic reasons, we had to say we knew nothing," admitted a senior aide.

However,

other allies from that period have proven more enduring.

Intelligence officials believe that Bin Laden is supported by the forces of Younis Khalis + Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, two of the seven mujahideen leaders whom the CIA + Saudi intelligence used to arm during the 1980 s jihad.

11.Sep.2001-Since- al-Qaida has released at least 37 video or audio recordings.

The latest, produced last week, shows Bin Laden meeting with the 9/11 bombers.

Earlier this year, he released five audio tapes. Could the tape trail unravel his cover?

The early cassettes were delivered to the office of al-Jazeera in an Islamabad suburb. America was watching, but to no avail.

"They did it at night using cut-offs," says one official, using the term for someone who does not know his employer. "It's one of the most reliable measures in spycraft."

Now Bin Laden's messages are distributed via an even more elusive channel - the internet.

Rarely has so much brought so little. The US has spent billions on the search.

It has mobilised armies, bribed informers, bullied allies, emptied bank accounts, tapped phones, abducted suspects and assassinated his henchmen.

It has, without a doubt, seriously damaged al-Qaida's ability to carry out terrorist attacks. Yet still the scarlet pimpernel of jihad roams free.

The foolhardy words of the American general who promised a scalp by the end of 2004 have been quietly forgotten. Embarrassment has crumbled into recrimination. The Americans blame the Pakistanis. The Pakistanis blame the Afghans. The Afghans shrug their shoulders. President Bush wanted to invade their country and catch Bin Laden, they say. So why hasn't he?
