https://www.cannonfire.blogspot.com/ Luskin's announcement came after his receipt of a letter from Fitzgerald, the federal prosecutor dogging the case.

Up to that point, everyone was certain Rove was toast + Jason Leopold even reported that he had been indicted, but the indictment was placed under seal as Sealed v. Sealed , evidently a most unusual event.

The timing of that filing coincided with the framework Leopold reported, but no indictment was ever announced. He suffered a great deal of animosity from the public, including liberal bloggers, but
21.Aug.2006 https://www.cannonfire.blogspot.com/ Of course, Plame and her husband, Joe Wilson, have filed a lawsuit against Rove, Cheney, Libby + unnamed others, but that is somewhat of a side issue, though the overlap will make for fascinating revelations. The latest on the lawsuit includes the fact that Plame/Wilson have added another attorney to their team who has pointed out that Cheney may have a hard time using Constitutional immunity to wiggle out of the suit, as they plan to use the Supreme Court decision against Clinton in the Paula Jones case. Poetic (in)justice, eh (I never thought that ruling made any sense)?

And then there's the fact that Cheney has lawyered up, likely his best move since resigning from Halliburton.
21.Aug.2006 https://www.cannonfire.blogspot.com/ the only information the public has gained in the past several months, technically since Libby was indicted, has come from Rove's lawyer, Robert Luskin of "my innocent client paid me in gold bricks" fame + Robert Novak, of "publish the CIA identity" fame. Like we should trust either one of these guys.

21.Aug.2006 Bush Now Says What He Wouldn’t Say Before War: Iraq Had ‘Nothing’ To Do With 9/11 - Faiz

President Bush was in the midst of explaining how the attacks of 9/11 inspired his “freedom agenda” and the attacks on Iraq until a reporter, Ken Herman of Cox News, interrupted to ask what Iraq had to do with 9/11. “Nothing,” Bush defiantly answered. Watch it.

19.Mar.2003 -To justify the war, Bush informed Congress that acting against Iraq was consistent with “continuing to take the necessary actions against international terrorists + terrorist organizations,

including those nations, organizations, or persons who planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks that occurred on 11.Sep.2001.”

As ThinkProgress has repeatedly documented, Vice President Cheney cited “evidence” cooked up by Douglas Feith + others to claim it was “pretty well confirmedthat Iraq had contacts with 9/11 hijackers.

More generally, in the lead-up to the war in Iraq, the administration encouraged the false impression that Saddam had a role in 9/11. Bush never stated then, as he does now, that Iraq had “nothing” to do with 9/11.

Only after the Iraq war began did Bush candidly acknowledge that Iraq was not operationally linked to 9/11. Digg It! Full transcript:

BUSH: Nothing.

21.Aug.2006 https://cannonfire.blogspot.com/2006/08/jetliner-plot-another-scarecrow.html
Two weeks before the announcement of the latest jetliner plot, Pakistani authorities arrested Rashid Rauf, the alleged terrorist mastermind, Al Qaeda link-man and beauty product entrepreneur. I've always found the sequence of events odd: One would presume that the arrest would have cancelled any plans. Now we learn that the
information extracted from Rauf (whether by fair means or foul) may not hold much value: But after two weeks of interrogation, an inch-by-inch search of his house and analysis of his home computer, officials are now saying that his extradition is ‘a way down the track’ if it happens at all.
It comes amid wider suspicions that the plot may not have been as serious, or as far advanced, as the authorities initially claimed.
Analysts suspect Pakistani authorities exaggerated Rauf’s role to appear ‘tough on terrorism’ and impress Britain and America.
A spokesman for Pakistan’s Interior Ministry last night admitted that ‘extradition at this time is not under consideration’. This whole "plot" is starting to look like just another scarecrow, designed to frighten the gullible.

21.Aug.2006 https://cannonfire.blogspot.com/2006/08/jetliner-plot-another-scarecrow.html
Craig Murray notes the the binary liquid explosive myth (if myth it is) can be used by authorities who want to smear someone placed under arrest. The acetone under your bathroom sink doesn't make you a terrorist, but it could lead to some ominous headlines about "precursor chemicals" in your apartment.
Murray likens the current tales to the ricin plot of a couple of years ago: It was alleged that a flat in North London inhabited by Muslims was a "Ricin" factory, manufacturing the deadly toxin which could kill "hundreds of thousands of people". Police tipped off the authorities that traces of ricin had been discovered. In the end, all those accused were found not guilty by the court. The "traces of ricin" were revealed to be the atmospheric norm.
The "intelligence" on that plot had been extracted under torture in Algeria - another echo here, as the "intelligence" in this current case has almost certainly been extracted under torture in Pakistan.

21.Aug.2006 https://www.cannonfire.blogspot.com/ The jetliner plot: Another scarecrow? Recent stories tend to confirm suspicions that the latest UK "terror plot" was something other than advertised.
The most interesting piece comes from our Australian friend Gavin Gatenby ("Nick Possum"). A chemist told him the straight skinny on TATP (Triacetone Triperoxide), the "secret ingredient" which, we are told, the Pakistanis had planned to use on jetliners.
I avoided chemistry in high school and thus cannot verify what you are about to read; any readers "in the know" should feel free to share their expertise. Gatenby's source calls TATP an "unstable brew" that requires both same-day usage and constant cooling: “Well, firstly you’ve got to understand that TATP isn’t a liquid, it’s a white crystalline powder. Looks like sugar and it makes nitroglycerine look safe...
“The three ingredients are acetone, sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide. The acetone and sulphuric you can buy at the hardware store without attracting suspicion, but the hydrogen peroxide has got to be virtually full strength. You can’t use the stuff you buy over the counter at the pharmacy because it’s 97 per cent water. Well, you could, but you’d have to buy a lot of little bottles of peroxide and boil off the water, which is very risky. One false move and you’ve burned your house down.
“Anyway, you can premix the peroxide with the acetone – a couple of litres might make a useful amount of TATP – and carry that onto the plane in a single container but you’ve got to keep it cool and the only way I can think of to do that is to carry it in a Styrofoam container with some of those cold bricks from the supermarket. Plus, in your kit you’ll need to have a stirrer and a thermometer and a glass beaker or a stainless steel bowl to mix it in..." So far, we've talked about the easy part. Here's what happens once you've dragged the cooler and other ingredients into the plane's toilet (without avoiding suspicion) in order to mix up some big boomage:
(To read the rest, click "Permalink" below)
“First you’ll need to fill your cooler box with water and wait till it the cold bricks cool it below 10 degrees C. Next step: take your mixing bowl, float it in the cold water, pour in the peroxide/acetone mix and then add the sulphuric acid, a drop at a time, stirring carefully. You’d need to check the temperature constantly. If it gets a little too hot you’ll get a piss-weak batch; if it gets way too hot you’ll get a weak batch that spontaneous detonates. I’d probably kill you and nobody else.
“Let’s assume that takes twenty minutes or so. You still aren’t finished. You’ll end up with damp crystals. You’ll have to carefully, very carefully, decant them onto a paper towel to soak up surplus liquid and then leave them to dry for an hour or so. Hey presto! Mother of Satan.” (Emphasis added.) Could a Pakistani take a bulky carry-on into the airline restroom and expect to operate undisturbed for 90 minutes? Not likely.
Very similar conclusions are reached in
this piece in the Register, by Thomas C. Greene: So the fabled binary liquid explosive - that is, the sudden mixing of hydrogen peroxide and acetone with sulfuric acid to create a plane-killing explosion, is out of the question. Meanwhile, making TATP ahead of time carries a risk that the mission will fail due to premature detonation, although it is the only plausible approach.
Certainly, if we can imagine a group of jihadists smuggling the necessary chemicals and equipment on board + cooking up TATP in the lavatory, then we've passed from the realm of action blockbusters to that of situation comedy.

BUSH: The strategy is to help the Iraqi people achieve the objectives and dreams which is a democratic society. That’s the strategy. The tactics — now — either you say yes it’s important we stay there and get it done or we leave. We’re not leaving so long as I’m the president. That would be a huge mistake. It would send an unbelievably you know terrible signal to reformers across the region. It would say we’ve abandoned our desire to change the conditions that create terror.

Iraqi insurgents killed 20 people and injured 300 as hundreds of thousands of pilgrims gathered for a holy Shiite festival over the weekend. But in a sign of just how routine the intense sectarian bloodshed in the capital has become, the U.S. military reported “relatively little violence.”

U.S. Postal Service gone wild. As the top executive at the USPS, Azeezaly Jaffer “ran up $8,252 staying at a Washington hotel suite,” “blew $3,486.33 in one evening for steak dinners and a bar-hopping binge,” and “tipped two lucky waiters $1,511.66 following a seafood dinner.” It was “all on the Postal Service’s dime.”

The Bush administration has begun designating as secret some information that the government long provided even to its enemy the former Soviet Union: the numbers of strategic weapons in the U.S. nuclear arsenal during the Cold War.” William Burr, who compiled the report for The National Security Archive, said the move represented one of the “more dramatic examples of unjustifiable secrecy .”

Violent crime is “on the rise” in cities across America, “fueling criticism of Bush administration policies as a wave of murders and shootings hits smaller cities and states with little experience with serious urban violence.”

The economic slowdown. Recession appears unlikely but “The job market is now tepid, consumers are tempering their spending + inventories - from women’s apparel to computer hard drives - are starting to rise.”

And finally: “Conservatism is widely seen as having the upper hand” in country music , but Nashville artists on the left have grown frustrated with that reputation and are starting to speak out. 21.Aug.2006 McCain Calls For Escalation In Iraq, Suggests Putting More Troops On The Ground - Faiz

On NBC’s Meet the Press this morning, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) called for immediately adding more U.S. soldiers on the ground in Iraq. Echoing the failed strategy behind the escalation during the Vietnam War, McCain suggested that putting more troops in the middle of Iraq’s civil war would help the U.S. to ultimately prevail. Watch it: <script type="text/javascript"> var so56011 = new SWFObject('//08/mccaintroops.320.240.flv&autoStart=false', 'em-so56011', '320', '260', '6', '#ffffff'); so56011.addParam('quality', 'high'); so56011.addParam('wmode', 'transparent'); so56011.write('so56011');

As former administration officials and military generals have noted, a larger initial force was necessary to provide security on the ground and prevent the growth of the insurgency. But at this point in the conflict, a larger force is operationally impracticable. Slate’s Fred Kaplan wrote last year that the Army could maintain its current troop levels in Iraq, but it doesn’t have the capacity to “allow George W. Bush to send more troops to Iraq and Afghanistan” unless we institute a draft.

Beyond the practical unfeasibility of sending in more troops, McCain misdiagnoses what adding more troops at this point would do to the situation on the ground. As the Center for American Progress’s Iraq redeployment strategy argues:

A more visible presence of U.S. troops risks further stoking the flames of the insurgency by feeding perceptions of long-term U.S. occupation among many Iraqis.

Full transcript below:

MCCAIN: The question is, are we going to be able to bring the situation under control now? I still believe we can. I think part of it has to do with the Madhi army and Sadr. Sadr has got to be taken out of this equation and his militia has got to be addressed forcefully.

GREGORY: But to do that, do you need more U.S. soldiers on the ground now?

MCCAIN: I think so. I think so. We took troops from places like Ramadi, which are still not under control and put them into Baghdad. We’ve had to send in additional troops as they are. All along, we have not had enough troops on the ground to control the situation. Many, many people knew that + it’s — we’re paying a very heavy price for it.

McCain Falsely Claims Most American Oppose Timetable For Iraq Withdrawal - Think Progress

Today on Meet the Press, Sen. John McCain claimed, “Most Americans — when they are asked ‘do you want to set a date for withdraw?’ — they say no.” Watch it:

McCain is wrong. Most American support a timetable for withdrawal. Here’s the latest CNN Poll:

CNN Poll conducted by Opinion Research Corporation. Aug. 2-3, 2006. N=1,047 adults nationwide. MoE ± 3 (for all adults).

Which comes closer to your view about U.S. troops in Iraq? The U.S. should set a timetable for withdrawal by announcing that it will remove all of its troops from Iraq by a certain date. The U.S. should keep troops in Iraq as long as necessary without setting any timetable for withdrawal.” Timetable % No Timetable % Unsure %

GREGORY: Let me show you something you said about public support for the war back last year in November. Put it on our screen. “If we can’t retain the support of the American people, we will have lost this war as soundly as if our forces were defeated on the battlefield.” As you well know, 60% is against the war. They say the war in Iraq has not been worth it. Has this government lost the people?

MCAIN: I don’t think so. Most Americans — when they are asked “do you want to set a date for withdraw?” — they say no. I’ve expressed my frustrations to you this morning. But they are not ready to face the consequences of failure by setting a date certain for withdraw. And I believe that they largely, although frustrated, recognize the consequences of failure.

AEI Fellow After Meeting With Bush: President May Take Military Action Against Iran In 12-18 Months - Faiz

Reuel Marc Gerecht, a resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and a member of a small group of analysts who were asked to discuss their views on the Middle East with President Bush at a private lunch this week, said this morning on ABC’s This Week that the mid- to long-term fallout from Israel-Hezbollah conflict could be a good thing because it may prompt Bush to take military action against Iran. Watch it:

Whatever the President’s plans are, there are no good military options in Iran.

Bush_U_S_May_Attack_Iran_Within_18_Months">Digg It! Transcript:

GERECT: I think more importantly — because of the way the Syrians and Iranians reacted — it is possible that the president has gotten very, very angry over that issue. If, in fact, you see down the road — because the premier issue for the iranians is nuclear weapons program — if you see down the road the president taking a much harder line on that issue

STEPHANOPOULOS: How much harder line could he take? Are you talking about military action?

GERECT: Well yeah it is conceivable you go down the road 12 or 18 months that the president will say nuclear weapons in the hands of the mullahs is simply unacceptable — as he said many times. And if in fact Lebanon contributes to the hardening of the American postion, then I would say that hezbollah actions in Lebanon were a great mistake.

NY Times, CNN, Fox News uncritically reported GOP suggestion that unwarranted surveillance helped foil U.K. terror plot In Propaganda/Noise Machine

In an August 18 article on a federal judge's ruling striking down as unconstitutional the Bush administration's warrantless domestic surveillance program, New York Times reporters Adam Liptak and Eric Lichtblau uncritically quoted House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert's (R-IL) claim that the program "saved the day by foiling the London terror plot." Liptak and Lichtblau reported that Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales has not said "whether the program played any role in foiling" the British terror plot, but then reported Hastert's assertion. The report went on to note that Hastert's office "declined to elaborate" on the claim, but, as Media Matters for America has noted, media reports cast considerable doubt on his assertion that intelligence gathered through the warrantless surveillance of U.S. citizens and legal residents helped thwart the attack. Indeed, Lichtblau himself reported on August 15 that U.S. law-enforcement agencies found "no direct connection" between the London plotters and anyone within the United States. In their reports on the news, CNN justice correspondent Kelli Arena and Fox News chief White House correspondent Bret Baier similarly linked the warrantless domestic surveillance program to the recently foiled plot.

On August 17, Judge Anna Diggs Taylor of the U.S. District Court in Detroit rejected the Bush administration's legal defense of the program -- which since 2001 has authorized the National Security Agency (NSA) to eavesdrop on the international communications of U.S. persons without court orders required by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978 (FISA). Taylor ruled that the program violates FISA, as well as the First and Fourth Amendments + ordered that the program be halted.

In their August 18 article on the ruling, Liptak and Lichtblau reported:

Mr. Gonzales would not say whether the program played any role in foiling a plot last week to set off bombs in airliners bound for the United States from Britain. But Speaker J. Dennis Hastert, Republican of Illinois, suggested that it did play a role in the investigation.

In a written statement criticizing Judge Taylor's ruling, Mr. Hastert defended the wiretapping operation and said that "our terrorist surveillance programs are critical to fighting the war on terror and saved the day by foiling the London terror plot."

His office declined to elaborate.

But Liptak and Lichtblau failed to note that the Bush administration and various news outlets -- including the Times -- have asserted that there is no evidence of any U.S. connection to the London plotters -- a fact that would seem to undermine Hastert's claim that the domestic surveillance program "saved the day." For instance, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff stated in an August 11 press conference that "we do not have evidence ... that the plotting [for the attack] was done in the United States." He later added that "we did not see any U.S. internal activity in this plot." Washington Post staff writers Dan Eggen and Spencer S. Hsu reported on August 13 that U.S. law enforcement agencies found "no links" between the plotters and anyone inside the United States. And Lichtblau himself reported in an August 15 article that, according to law enforcement officials, "no links to any Americans have surfaced."

Furthermore, while it has been confirmed that U.S. authorities, once alerted to the London plot, conducted extensive surveillance of suspects within the United States, news reports indicate that the eavesdropping occurred in accordance with FISA, as Media Matters for America noted. Indeed, Lichtblau reported on August 15 that "the Justice Department sought double or triple the usual rate of court-approved wiretaps to monitor the communications of American suspects" in the plot (while, again, Lichtblau reported that U.S. officials found no direct connection to anyone in this country). Eggen and Hsu, in their August 13 article, reported that hundreds of law enforcement officials undertook "dozens of clandestine surveillance and search operations on individuals with possible links to the London plotters," including "people who had been called or e-mailed by suspects or their relatives and acquaintances." But Eggen and Hsu further noted that this surveillance "produced a noticeable surge in applications for clandestine warrants from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court."

Despite the above evidence that the warrantless domestic surveillance program had little -- if anything -- to do with uncovering the London terror plot, CNN justice correspondent Kelli Arena uncritically reported on the August 17 edition of CNN's Lou Dobbs Tonight an argument attributed to unnamed "[g]overnment officials" that the incident is "a primary example of why the U.S. government sometimes needs to listen in on international communications without a warrant." Similarly, Fox News chief White House correspondent Bret Baier noted on the August 17 edition of Special Report that Taylor's ruling "comes one week to the day after the British terror plot to blow up jetliners was thwarted." He then reported that Gonzales "called the terrorist surveillance program a critical tool to stop more terrorist plots."

From the August 17 edition of CNN's Lou Dobbs Tonight :

ARENA: Government officials point to the alleged plot to blow up jetliners over the Atlantic as a primary example of why the U.S. government sometimes needs to listen in on international communications without a warrant. But a federal judge in Detroit says the National Security Agency's controversial wiretapping program violates free speech and privacy rights.

From the August 17 edition of Fox News' Special Report with Brit Hume :

BAIER: The ruling comes one week to the day after the British terror plot to blow up jetliners was thwarted. In a late-afternoon news conference, the attorney general called the terrorist surveillance program a critical tool to stop more terrorist plots.

GONZALES: I believe very strongly that the president does have the authority to authorize this kind of conduct and particularly in a time of war.

No Evidence on Patsy Rashid Rauf By Administrator on Uncategorized

Now that we are well on our way to instituting “behavioral profiling,” that is to say “looking at your background so when your passenger list comes up we start identifying people that need more scrutiny,” at airports in the United States and Britain in the wake of the “liquid bomb” non-threat a week and a half ago, the corporate media is reporting that Rashid Rauf, initially pegged as the plot “key planner” and a close relative of Jaish-e-Mohammed leader Masood Azhar who went over the al-Qaeda dark side, is in fact not what he is cracked up to be, or rather what the corporate media, listening to Pakistan’s duplicitous ISI, basically a branch office of the CIA, made him out to be.

After “two weeks of interrogation, an inch-by-inch search of his house and analysis of his home computer, officials are now saying that his extradition is ‘a way down the track’ if it happens at all,” notes the Daily Mail. “It comes amid wider suspicions that the plot may not have been as serious, or as far advanced, as the authorities initially claimed…. Analysts suspect Pakistani authorities exaggerated Rauf’s role to appear ‘tough on terrorism’ and impress Britain and America.”

How fortuitous, especially for the neocons and Bush’s Ministry of Homeland Security, busily working to trounce the Constitution and turn America into a snoop and police state.

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff called on state legislators Thursday to embrace new federal driver’s license requirements to strengthen security,” reports the Associated Press. “Starting three years from now, if you live or work in the United States, you’ll need a federally approved ID card to travel on an airplane, open a bank account, collect Social Security payments, or take advantage of nearly any government service. Practically speaking, your driver’s license likely will have to be reissued to meet federal standards,” explained CNet News in March. In addition to name, birth date, sex, ID number, a digital photograph + address, “Homeland Security is permitted to add additional requirements—such as a fingerprint or retinal scan—on top of those.” In short, without this new card, slotted to go online by 2008, you will be unable to function in society.

In a speech at the annual meeting of the National Conference of State Legislatures, Chertoff sought to allay privacy concerns about the federal Real ID Act, saying there are no plans to create a federal database of drivers’ personal information,” same as the NSA, ensconced in telecom offices, only listens in on al-Qaeda phone calls or reads Osama’s email.

Recall Chertoff and AG Gonzales using the absurd liquid bomb plot as an excuse to hold “suspects” for long periods of time minus formal charge, as the Brits currently do. “What helped the British in this case is the ability to be nimble, to be fast, to be flexible, to operate based on fast-moving information,” or rather spurious information. “The Bush administration has pushed for greater executive authority in the war on terror, leading it to create a warrantless eavesdropping program, hold suspects who are deemed as ‘enemy combatants’ for long periods and establish a military tribunal system for detainees that affords defendants fewer rights than traditional courts-martial,” the Associated Press reported last week. In other words, kicking the Bill of Rights while it is down.

Of course, at this point—with more than a week of corporate media reports detailing implausible liquid bomb scenarios + airports going into hysterical lockdown, the fact Rashid Rauf did not plan to bomb airplanes, or the disappeared “suspects” in London did not have bombs, airline tickets, or even passports—it does not matter if there was a threat or not.

Far too many Americans, reacting like Seven of Nine, Tertiary Adjunct of Unimatrix Zero-One, to commands from the Borg Hive, now believe al-Qaeda will sooner or later mix up a deadly concoction of bathroom chemicals on the next red-eye flight out of Chicago, thus they will acquiesce to barking security thugs at airports and mindlessly march through X-rated X-ray machines with nary a bleat of protest.

There is a democratic renaissance sweeping the Arab world that calls for independence, an Arab Palestine, unity, justice and democracy. It cannot be stopped. The political map of the region is being redrawn, but not by the Americans, nor the Israelis. The success of this renaissance is a gift for us all, pointing as it does towards a renewal of the international order along the lines of justice and the ! defence of human values. The page has been turned on 50 years of US-Israeli foreign policy. It is a new era. The tide has turned. BAGHDAD AND INFO WARS (Part One)
Malcom Lagauche ...The propaganda cover-up of the Battle of Baghdad, what we call BOBCUP (Battle of Baghdad Cover-up) was so conspicuously against the United States principles of information, which is what we follow in the Department of Defense Public Affairs operations, was so egregiously out of line, it was then that I self-mobilized my mission of conscience because, basically, it was apparent to me at that point, that we were under dictatorship. A Journey to Southern Lebanon
Funerals at Qana
KATHY KELLY Two days ago, driving toward the village of Qana, we saw men at work, creating neatly aligned rows of rectangular cement structures that would soon be ready for burials. On foot, we entered Qana, thinking we should at least identify the site where a massacre had taken place when, on July 30, an Israeli bomb hit a building that sheltered children as they slept. It took five hours for ambulances to reach them. Statistics differ, but the most rece! nt Human Rights Watch report estimated that twenty-three were killed. Turning a corner, we saw men arranging white plastic chairs for guests who came to mourn with family members in the funeral tradition. The men sat in front of one home. Women were next door...

As Full of Pro-Israeli Holes as Swiss Cheese
Inside 1701: What the UN Security Council's Ceasefire Resolution Actually Says
VIRGINIA TILLEY What is really portended by UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which set the terms for the present ceasefire in Lebanon? The very fact that it was signed at all might be encouraging, but no one is sure what its actual impact will be and most are sceptical. For Israel, will it secure the outcome its leaders are (rather desperately) claiming they have gained by thi! s dreadful war - i.e., ultimate disarmament of Hizbullah? For Lebanon and Hizbullah, will it secure Israel's withdrawal? Either way, will it last?

Treasure of Baghdad ...Abu Bakir is an old man in his late 50s who works in the ministry of Agriculture in Baghdad. As he was heading to work, he was accompanied by one of his sons. As they were leaving the ministry, a group of armed men blocked off their way and kidnapped Abu Bakir leaving his son shouting and screaming in the street trying to help his father but in vain. No one intervened. By this time, bad news was coming like rain from the new democratic country. People ! were dying in dozens, fuel crisis increased, electricity almost vanished in a place where temperature reached 120 F + death squads and militias move freely in a lawless country where no official force is really in control. S., my other close friend, emailed me and told me that the neighborhood opposite to mine is controlled by the Mahdi army militiamen who threatened every single Sunni family to leave despite the fact that the neighborhood is mixed and never had problems (...) Abu Bakir?s family searched for every spot they expected to see him in. One day, they received a phone call from the kidnappers. "We killed your father," they told his 24 year-old daughter. Neighbors took them to Ur neighborhood to search for his dead body. Finally, they found it in a black trash bag in a trash area. It was really hard to identify him, A. said. It appeared he was brutally tortured...

"Scientists meeting in Stockholm are reporting that increased food and biofuel production will place higher demand upon irrigation and water resources." From the article: "Demand for irrigation -- which absorbs about 74 percent of all water used by people against 18 percent for hydro-power and other industrial uses and just 8 percent for households -- was likely to surge by 2050. Many nations are also shifting to produce biofuels -- from sugarcane, corn or wood -- as a less polluting alternative to fossil fuels. Oil prices at $75 a barrel and worries about global warming are driving the shift."

Hagel: Iraq Is In A ‘Very Defined Civil War’ - Amanda

Today on Fox News Sunday, Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-NE) said that Iraq is in a “very defined civil war” and that the Middle East is “the most unstable we’ve seen since 1948.” He also reiterated that the United States needs to begin withdrawing troops within the next six months because staying the course just continues to “kill Americans and put Americans in the middle of a civil war that we have less and less control and influence over every day.”

Watch it: Digg It! Full transcript below:

HAGEL: We have a very unstable Middle East, the most unstable we’ve seen since 1948. You can measure that any way you want. The fact is the future of Iraq will be determined by the Iraqi people, just like it was in Vietnam. The answer in my opinion is not to just keep feeding more American troops into it. The Iraqi people have already made some decisions here. We, in fact, are in probably a low-grade — maybe a very defined — civil war. You’ve got corruption. Everywhere. As bad as it’s ever been. You’ve got uncontrollables that we can’t control. We can’t deal with. Iran probably has more influence in Iraq than we do at this point.

[snip]

WALLACE: You have said that you think we should begin pulling troops out within six months.

HAGEL: I do.

WALLACE: How is that going to make things better?

HAGEL: How is it going to make things better for us to continue to kill Americans and put Americans in the middle of a civil war that we have less and less control and influence over every day? How does that stabilize things? This is going to play out, Chris, on its own. I’m not saying pull out of Iraq. That’s not what I’ve said. I’ve said start withdrawing troops. We have to show the Iraqi people — and this obviously cuts right to the great anti-Americanism by any poll, by any measurements there — that we are not there to predetermine their outcome. We’re not there to control or to govern. They are going to have to do that. Now, the fact is, bottom line, Chris, there are very few options here. We don’t have any good options. We got a mess on our hands in the Middle East.

Airliner plot, Tablighi Jamaat, ISI and Mossad By aangirfan

There are reports that the plot to blow up airliners over the Atlantic (August 2006) may be linked to an organisation called Tablighi Jamaat, which may be linked to Pakistan Intelligence, which may have been penetrated not just by the CIA but also by Mossad.
19.Aug.2006 From The Guardian
https://www.guardian.co.uk/terrorism/story/0,,1853800,00.html
Tablighi Jamaat , whose activities are being monitored by the security services, holds tightly guarded meetings on an industrial estate close to the area where some of the suspects in last week's terror raids were arrested. This week it emerged that at least seven of the 23 suspects under arrest on suspicion of involvement in the plot to blow up transatlantic airliners may have participated in Tablighi events.
The organisation - influenced by a branch of Saudi Arabian Islam known as Wahhabism - has already been linked to two of the July 7 suicide bombers who attended a Tablighi mosque at the organisation's headquarters in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire. The jailed shoe bo mber Richard Reid is also known to have attended Tablighi meetings.

https://www.apfn.net/messageboard/01-05-05/discussion.cgi.71.html
... the CIA, since the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, cultivated the ISI as their most important client and agent...
I just read "Charlie Wilson's War" by George Crile, Grove Press, NY, 2003.
The Mossad used Charlie Wilson to penetrate the CIA's Afghan campaign + thereby the ISI and the Pakistani government at all levels...
CIA officer Milton Bearden says that in this period Dick Cheney played a key role in getting Wilson appointed to the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence , which may suggest that Cheney was an important player in the pro-Israeli network even at this point ("The Main Enemy", Milton Bearden, Ballantine Books, NY, 2003. pg. 277).
The Israelis may have gained Wilson's allegiance in part by pandering to his appetites. Charlie Wilson was very close with at least three very beautiful Israeli women + at least two of these were put in his path by the Israeli government. One was "Ziva, a beautiful Israeli ballerina" (Crile, pg. 2).
Then there was "a raven-haired captain in the Israeli Defense Forces. She was the congressman's official guide to the war zone + Wilson's infatuation began on that first trip into the desert to see the burning Russian tanks" (Crile, pg. 32).
Then he was introduced to Gila Almagor, Israel's leading movie star (Crile,pg. 32). "By the time he got back to Washington, Wilson hadbecome, in his own words, 'an Israeli commando' in the U.S.Congress" (Crile, pg. 32)...
As soon as he had gained access to the key Congressional positions, the "Israeli commando" became obsessed with funding and controling the CIA's Afhan jihad against the Soviets. In the words of Milton Bearden, the CIA Field Officer in Afghanistan at the time, "More than any other member of either house, Charlie fashioned Congress into the engine that drove the CIA's program for Afghanistan." (Bearden, pg. 277).
Given what George Crile has revealed about Charlie Wilson's career,we can substitute "the Mossad" for "Charlie" in the previous statement...
Traveling from Israel to Pakistan, Wilson was successful in selling president Zia on acquiring massive amounts ofIsraeli technology and weaponry (Crile, 140 - 153)...
So in summary, the Israelis were very major players in the Afghan jihad, providing crucial technology and weaponry. They accomplished this not by interfacing with the CIA, which opposed their involvement, but by interfacing their own intelligence agencies directly with the U.S. Congress + using Congressional delegations to establish their own direct connections to the government and intelligence services of Pakistan. The Israeli/Pakistan connnection was crucial to the success of the Afghan campaign against the Soviets + provided Israeli intelligence with a very secure footing inside Pakistan's intelligence agency, the ISI.

An al-Qaeda operative who masterminded the alleged plot to blow up airliners over the Atlantic is hiding in mountainous terrain in north-eastern Afghanistan, a Pakistan intelligence official has claimed,” reports the Scotsman. “Although his name and nationality have not been revealed, the suspect allegedly exchanged messages, carried by a courier, with detained British national Rashid Rauf, who is being interrogated by Pakistani authorities in connection with the alleged plot that was smashed last week with at least 30 people arrested in both Britain and Pakistan.”
20.Aug.2006 But never mind. Polymer 'Muscle' Changes How we Look at Color - ScuttleMonkey 64

New Scientist is reporting that in the not-so-distant future computer monitors + televisions may utilize a color changing polymer that responds to a current instead of existing techniques. From the article: "Aschwanden and colleagues built arrays of 10 pixels, each 80 micrometers across. The pixels consist of a piece of polymer covered with ridges tipped with gold. When white light is shone at the polymer from one side it reflects out of the screen and is also split into different wavelengths by this 'diffraction grating'. However, a slit above the polymer ensures that only one wavelength of light escapes, giving the pixel its color. The pieces of polymer also contract in response to current, like simple muscles. As they do so, the fan of light-waves is moved, changing the color that is fed through the slits above and out of the screen. Cutting the current causes the muscle to return to its original state."

From the article: 'The lesson here is once you get infected, you are completely under the control of the botmaster. He can put whatever he wants on your machine + there's no way to be 100 percent sure that the machine is clean. The only way to be [completely] sure the system is malware-free is to completely wipe the hard drive and reinstall the operating system.'"

But 102 years after the discovery of the calcium-encrusted bronze mechanism on the ocean floor, hidden inscriptions show that it is the world's oldest computer, used to map the motions of the sun, moon and planets.

'We're very close to unlocking the secrets,' says Xenophon Moussas,an astrophysicist with a Anglo-Greek team researching the device. 'It's like a puzzle concerning astronomical and mathematical knowledge.'

Known as the Antikythera mechanism and made before the birth of Christ, the instrument was found by sponge divers amid the wreckage of a cargo ship that sunk off the tiny island of Antikythera in 80BC. To date, no other appears to have survived.
