19.Okt.2004 This article is about the corporation known as BP. See also BP (disambiguation)

BP (formerly British Petroleum and Amoco ) is a petroleum company headquartered in London,UK United Kingdom.

00.000.2001 BPAmoco was formed by what was officially described as the merger of British Petroleum + Amoco to avoid competition issues.

00.000.2001-00.000.2002 -after one year of joint operations- however, the two giants merged most operations + took on the initialism "BP," using the tagline "Beyond Petroleum."

00.000.2002 they became officially BP, with the letters officially meaning nothing.

00.000.2001 -around the time BP "merged" with Amoco- BP also acquired Arco.

00.000.0000-00.000.0000 -once- Arco was the Atlantic Richfield Oil Company.

00.000.197- -Previously (mid-1970s)- British Petroleum had acquired Standard Oil of Ohio or Sohio.

20.Oct.2004 Most Amoco gas stations in the USA are in the process of changing the look + name to BP British Petroleum.

However in some USA states, the buildings + pumps are changing to BP, but the signage is staying Amoco.

20.Oct.2004 It is speculated that Arco stations may soon be rebranded BP, but retain their Arco unique business practices.

Arco is also attached to the Convience Store AMPM which was included in the acquisition by BP . URL: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Petroleum

19.Okt.2004 Standard Oil of Ohio From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Standard Oil of Ohio or Sohio was an American oil company that was acquired by British Petroleum, now part of BP.

00.000.1911 -after the antitrust breakup -in- of Standard Oil -the original Standard Oil company founded by John D. Rockefeller- Standard Oil of Ohio or Sohio was one of the successor companies.

00.000.1970 -in the s- BP took majority ownership of the Standard Oil of Ohio or Sohio company in return for its BP share of the Prudhoe Bay oilfield in Alaska.

00.000.1987 -after all ## other Standard Oil descendants had ceased use of the name Standard , Standard of Ohio, proud to be the original, sought to corporately rebrand itself under the Standard name while continuing to use the Sohio brand + others to sell gas.

00.000.1987 00.000.1988 the next year However, BP bought out the minority interest + absorbed the Standard brands, 00.000.1991 Sohio being the last to go in.

00.000.2001 When BP merged with Amoco, its American headquarters moved from the former Standard Oil building on Public Square in Cleveland, Ohio to Chicago. URL: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_Oil_of_Ohio

05.Sep.2004 It's too easy to blame bin Laden -Jason Burke- The Observer
Heads of security services + governments around the world have something in common with bin Laden, Osama.

They all stand to benefit from exaggerating the capabilities of al-Qaeda.

The idea that bin Laden is a global terrorist mastermind, able to engender violence worldwide, flatters him + helps in the competition with other terrorist outfits for recruits + funds.

The benefits of myth-making are also clear to the Russians (+ the Uzbeks + Filipinos + Algerians, to name but three serial human-rights abusing governments who constantly claim, disingenuously, that the insurgents that they are fighting in their respective lands are linked to 'al-Qaeda').

Active participation in the 'war against terror' triggers a flood of material + moral support from Washington as well as legitimising tactics the West otherwise wouldn't approve of. It means long-term grudges underpinning any insurgency – discrimination + economic mismanagement + repression - can be ignored + the 'al-Qaeda bogeyman' blamed instead.

19.Okt.2004 What is one to make of this lack of reportorial curiousity about evidence of a massive fraud--possible cheating by the president on three nationally televised campaign debates--on the part of the national media?

If it were just a matter of lousy news judgement, it would be bad enough, but the fact that both the Times + the Post saw the need to publish serious stories about the matter the day the story broke, and that CNN saw it as important enough to air on CNN International, shows that something worse is going on -the deliberate deep-sixing of a story embarrassing to the president.

The White House + the Bush campaign, for their part, continue to dismiss questions about what Bush was wearing in the debates + on other occasions, by attributing the story to "the Internet."

In fact, as has been the case with many of the important stories about the Iraq war + the Bush administration, the Internet is proving to be where the real journalism is happening.

URL: https://www.counterpunch.org/lindorff10182004.html
19.Okt.2004 Since writing my initial expose in Salon magazine, I was deluged with requests for interviews by local station news programs + talk show hosts, all of whom gave the story serious coverage. Bu no calls from national radio news programs--not even NPR, which never did a piece, only a commentary a week late on its On the Media program.

On the big TV networks, the story was handled as comic relief.

It made Letterman, Leno and Comedy Central, but not the news programs--though they are the ones with the video archives which reporters should be combing for more evidence of Bush's high-tech speaking aids.

If they bothered to do such digging, they'd find, as I have, that Bush also had that peculiar bulge on his back on other important occasions, as when he went to answer questions from the 11.Sep.2001 Commission.

Would Americans want to know about that? I should think they would. URL: https://www.counterpunch.org/lindorff10182004.html
19.Okt.2004 Let's start with CNN.

This once daring + innovative all-news television network, after falling into the hands of Time-Warner and particularly of late, has become so frightened by the marketing success of Fox News that it has virtually become a clone of Rupert Murdoch's semi-official Bush propaganda network. This became apparent to me when I was living in Taiwan last spring. The CNN International edition I watched in Kaohsiung was showing graphic reports of slain civilian victims of U.S. bombs in Iraq + of dead and wounded American troops--images that my friends back home in the U.S. weren't seeing.

Obviously, CNN had the tape + felt it was newsworthy, or they wouldn't have been showing such scenes abroad, but they were hiding it all from the viewers at home. URL: https://www.counterpunch.org/lindorff10182004.html
19.Okt.2004 The scandal of George Bush's earpiece debate cheating device continues to grow.

I just got a look at the full Fox tape of President Bush's May '04 joint news conference with French President Jaques Chirac.

In that tape, as in several other tapes I've seen, Bush can be heard seemingly getting prompting from another voice.

About 12 seconds into the piece, the leading voice says, "And I look forward to working to" Bush comes in with "And I look workin'And I look forward to workin' to"

The verbal slip-up makes it clear that this is no electronic echo or sound synchronization problem.

At another point, about one minute + sixteen seconds into the tape, the leading voice lets out a loud exhale of breath. Bush does not follow suit.

There is no preceding voice when a reporter is heard asking a question.

Also, at one minute + 28 seconds into this tape, Bush reaches up + manipulates something in his ear, at which point there is a static noise + the sound of a speaker acting up, until he removes his fingers from his ear.

There is no wire going up to his ear, indicating that the earpiece in his right ear is wireless.URL: https://www.counterpunch.org/lindorff10182004.html

18.Oct.2004 Fallujah negotiator questions Zarqawi ultimatum

Iraq's interim prime minister has threatened to attack Fallujah unless it turns in foreign militants, but a negotiator for the rebel-held city said its people were being asked to chase shadows.

Iyad Allawi told Iraq's interim assembly that Fallujah must surrender Jordanian Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, America's top enemy in Iraq, or face military action.

"We want to know what proof there is that Zarqawi is in Fallujah," Hatem Maddab, a member of a Fallujah negotiating committee, told Arabic Al Jazeera television, adding that the government had now halted peace talks.

US warplanes have repeatedly struck at targets the military says are hideouts used by Zarqawi and his followers in the Sunni Muslim city 50 kilometres west of Baghdad.

"Zarqawi is like the weapons of mass destruction that America invaded Iraq for," Mr Maddab said, alluding to Saddam Hussein's arsenal of banned arms that proved not to exist.

"We hear about that name (Zarqawi), but he is not here. More than 20 or 30 homes have been bombarded because of this Zarqawi and his followers but only women, children and the elderly have been affected," the negotiator added.

He said the fate of Zarqawi had not been raised in talks with the interim government aimed at restoring state authority in Fallujah before nationwide elections due in January.

"At this point in time, the negotiations are halted for the sake of consultation. We did not suspend any negotiations ... they were stopped by the government," Mr Maddab said.

18.Oct.2004 Unfit for service New information with regard to the meaning of a special code which appears on George W. Bush’s Air National Guard discharge papers indicates that he was being thrown out of the Air National Guard for failing “to possess the required military qualifications for his grade or specialty, or does not meet the mental, moral, professional or physical standards of the Air Force.” In other words, he was unfit for service. For the full details,
see here.
The only question: Who pulled strings to make sure this fact did not continue to haunt W?

18.Oct.2004 Competitive zeal, a desire to boost ratings, bullheadedness--all these factors may have contributed to "Rather-gate," CBS's gaffe led by Dan Rather over the presumably fake documents about George W. Bush's National Guard career. It is a painfully familiar story: Hyper-competitive people who push the boundaries of truth (or of the law) are everywhere.
What makes the CBS story so tantalizing is that "lay people"--call them readers or viewers or just plain old ordinary Joes and Janes, anyone but professional journalists--were the truth squad. A few people who knew a lot about typewriter fonts began asking well-informed questions the online journals known as blogs. A decade ago, these people might have shared their musings with their friends or in a letter to a local newspaper. (The newspaper, of course, might have ignored it.) But these days, it takes no more clicks to reach a blog as it does to reach CBS's own Web site. And in a matter of days, the questions raised in those blogs forced CBS to 'fess up that it didn't have its facts nailed down. URL:

18.Oct.2004 The European Court has quietly brushed aside 50 years of international case law in a landmark judgement on press freedom

by ruling that Brussels does not have to comply with European human rights codes.

In a judgement with profound implications for civil liberties, European judges backed efforts by the European Commission to obtain the computers + address books + phone records + 1000 pages of notes seized by Belgian police - on EU instructions - from Hans-Martin Tillack, the former Brussels correspondent of the German news magazine Stern .

It is a test case of whether the European Court will adhere to the democratic freedoms + liberal principles upheld for the last half-century by Europe's leading rights watchdog, the non-EU Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, or whether it will pursue a more authoritarian line as its power grows.

Tillack had written a series of hard-hitting exposes of EU fraud + skulduggery, relying on inside sources.

By obtaining his archive of investigative files amassed over five years, the commission can identify sources + "burn" a generation of EU whistleblowers.

Tillack was arrested by Belgian police in March + held incommunicado for 10 hours for allegedly bribing an official to obtain internal EU documents.

The action was requested "urgently" by the EU's anti-fraud office, which said Tillack was about to leave for the USA. In fact, he was moving back to Hamburg.

Leaked anti-fraud office documents have since shown that the allegation was concocted over dinner between two commission spokesmen.

Raymond Kendall, the former Interpol chief + now head of an anti-fraud office oversight board, testified to the House of Lords in May that officials had acted improperly "purely on the basis of hearsay" and were "obviously" in collusion with Belgian police to identify Tillack's sources.

Tillack filed a lawsuit at the European Court with the backing of the International Federation of Journalists to block commission access to his records.

The federation pleaded that the EU's attempt to identify a journalist's sources in that way was a "flagrant violation" of press protection established over many years in European Convention law.

If the commission was allowed to sift through his records, it would render investigative journalism "virtually impossible" in Brussels.

The EU's Court of First Instance ruled against Tillack last week on the grounds that the case was a strictly Belgian matter.

The European judges accepted commission claims that it played no role in Tillack's arrest, despite the leaked anti-fraud office documents that show it orchestrated the raid from the outset.

18.Oct.2004 After consultations with some Arab countries on ways to avoid a crisis, the USA has decided to arrange a military coup with the assistance of young Baathists + some Iraqi secular figures. The disarming of the Iraqi Shia and the accusations claiming that former members of the Badr Brigades and SCIRI have assassinated members of Iraq’s National Intelligence Agency are the first steps of the military coup in Iraq. 18.Oct.2004 Iraqi interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi’s government’s insistence on disarming the Shia groups and the questionable visits of Iraqi officials to Jordan reveal that a conspiracy against the Iraqi nation is being formed.

Meanwhile, there are reports that the Al-Dalim, Al-Takrit, Al-Jabour, and Al-A’ni tribes have kept their arms and are being prepared to play an active role in Iraq’s political future, while most of the Iraqi Shia groups in central and southern Iraq have handed over their weapons. 18.Oct.2004 It is common practice for the lower ranks of the police and military forces to be trained in their home country. Usually only high-ranking officers and commanders are sent abroad for training.

In light of this, the fact that new recruits to the Iraqi police and the newly-established military forces have been dispatched to Jordan indicates that they are going to be prepared for a significant mission.

On the other hand, the USA has sent 60 Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) officials to Jordan on the pretext that they will be interrogating some Al-Qaeda members. This is also part of the U.S. plot to stage a military coup against the Iraqi nation. URL: https://www.tehrantimes.com/Description.asp?Da=10/17/2004&Cat=14&Num=001

18.Oct.2004 Hidden players brewing coup in Iraq -The recent activities of the USA + some of Iraq’s neighboring countries as well as some undiplomatic statements by several Iraqi military and security officials indicate that a military coup against the majority in Iraq is being planned.

The recent irresponsible statements of Iraqi National Intelligence chief Mohammed al-Shahwani suggest that internal + foreign elements are forming a conspiracy to surreptitiously return remnants of the Baath Party to power.

In addition, it is a bad omen that the staff of Iraq’s National Intelligence Agency is mainly made up of former Baath Party members. URL: https://www.tehrantimes.com/Description.asp?Da=10/17/2004&Cat=14&Num=001

18.Oct.2004 Bush's core Republican support lies in the suburbs and Bible-belt rural areas, where many people rely on TV sound bites for their world view, and have little understanding of history, geography or foreign affairs. This is the new "dumbed-down Republicans Party," fertile ground for nationalist hysteria, religious extremism, and anti-foreign xenophobia

18.Oct.2004 Republicans don't care. Amazingly, a recent CNN/USA Today poll showed 62% of Republicans still believe Iraq was behind 11.Sep.2001 . This is after a flood of contrary evidence and Duelfer's report.

How can Republicans remain so blinkered? Part of the fault lies with the sycophantic national media, which collaborated with the Bush administration in whipping up war fever. The media still are not telling people the truth about Iraq, Afghanistan, or the so-called war on terrorism.

The media utterly failed to remind Americans that Bush, who loves to play war leader, actually claimed Iraqi drone aircraft were poised to fly off ships in the North Atlantic and bombard America with germs. Bush should have been laughed out of office for believing and promoting this comic-book nonsense.

Many Republicans simply don't see what the rest of the world does. So what if Iraq was no threat? Don't bother these golf club Rambos with details. They're delighted to see the U.S. pounding Arabs in revenge for 11.Sep.2001 .

"In 2003," he writes, "the U.S. invaded a country that did not threaten us, had not attacked us + did not want war with us, to disarm it of weapons we have since discovered it did not have."

White House assurances that U.S. troops would be greeted in Iraq with flowers were as laughable as its pledges Mideast peace and democracy would ensue.

Chief U.S. arms inspector Charles Duelfer's recent, 960-page report contradicted almost every Bush administration prewar claim about Iraq, which were used to justify an illegal war that has killed 20,000 Iraqis and more than 1,000 Americans, caused 14,000 U.S. casualties and will soon have cost $200 billion US -- when Washington can't even supply flu vaccine.
