01.Okt.2004 The true face of Iraqi resistance : Misrepresentation of reality helps keep people of conscience in Britain and the US from having sleepless nights about the children daily killed in their name or the trade unionists hounded by Saddamist torturers enlisted by the occupation.

01.Okt.2004 Carter? : Iraq has become a "quagmire" similar to Vietnam War: "I think a lot of the violence in Iraq now is directly attributable to the fact that U.S. forces are there + there is no clear concept at any early stage of when they will be withdrawn."

01.Okt.2004 Strike while the irony is hot : If Kerry cannot persuade the majority of voters in a majority of states to give him the edge over Bush, then he can take his long face back to the Senate and vote for more wars. Because in that case the message from US voters will be clear: the rest of the world can go to blazes.

01.Okt.2004 The Hapless and the Wretched of the Earth : So Kofi Annan has at last discovered that 3 A's (Anglo-American-Australian) attack on Iraq was illegal and against the basic premises of the United Nations. Some of us knew it then + said so. Some of us wondered why Annan withdrew his UN inspectors from Iraq, giving the US carte-blanche to launch its bombers against an innocent people

01.Okt.2004 Cuba and the security doctrine of the USA: In the case of Cuba, ever since the Bush administration came to power, constituted by the most right-wing sectors of the USA' political oligarchy, it has been designing the preparation of a "Cuba case" that eventually will serve to justify U.S. military aggression, utilizing for that purpose four principal elements.

01.Okt.2004 Growing Pessimism on Iraq
Doubts Increase Within U.S. Security Agencies
By Dana Priest and Thomas E. Ricks
Washington Post Staff Writers
29.Sep.2004 "Washington Post" -- A growing number of career professionals within national security agencies believe that the situation in Iraq is much worse + the path to success much more tenuous, than is being expressed in public by top Bush administration officials, according to former and current government officials and assessments over the past year by intelligence officials at the CIA and the departments of State and Defense.
While President Bush, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and others have delivered optimistic public appraisals, officials who fight the Iraqi insurgency and study it at the CIA and the State Department and within the Army officer corps believe the rebellion is deeper and more widespread than is being publicly acknowledged, officials say.
People at the CIA "are mad at the policy in Iraq because it's a disaster + they're digging the hole deeper and deeper and deeper," said one former intelligence officer who maintains contact with CIA officials. "There's no obvious way to fix it. The best we can hope for is a semi-failed state hobbling along with terrorists and a succession of weak governments."
"Things are definitely not improving," said one U.S. government official who reads the intelligence analyses on Iraq.
"It is getting worse," agreed an Army staff officer who served in Iraq and stays in touch with comrades in Baghdad through e-mail. "It just seems there is a lot of pessimism flowing out of theater now. There are things going on that are unbelievable to me. They have infiltrators conducting attacks in the Green Zone. That was not the case a year ago."

URL: https://home.t-online.de/home/oeko-log.freilandforschung/luchsnetz/zusamm.htm
30.Sep.2004 ZUSAMMENFASSUNG

2004 By the time Mr Blair left Crawford on Sunday, April 7, to fly home for the Queen Mother's state funeral, the die was cast. The gamble could not have been for higher stakes.

He had persuaded President Bush to try to go through the UN, preventing the threat of a war that autumn. But short of the Security Council backing military force to topple Saddam - something few if any of his officials believed likely - the Prime Minister was committed to a war that was opposed by a majority not just within his own party, but among the population at large + with no clear idea of what would happen "on the morning after". URL: https://news.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2004/09/18/nwar118.xml
18.Sep.
2004 Neither the extent of the threat nor the reasons for tackling it now were clear, Mr Straw said. It was doubtful that America would be considering military action if the September 11 attacks had not occurred.

But at the same time there was "no credible evidence" to link Iraq to Osama bin Laden and al-Qa'eda.

The British strategy had to be based on international law and that meant using Iraq's "flagrant breach" of the UN-imposed obligation to allow the weapons inspectors unfettered access. It should concentrate initially on toughening the sanctions regime and insisting that the weapons inspectors be allowed the "go anywhere, any time" regime Mr Cheney had demanded. URL: https://news.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2004/09/18/nwar118.xml
18.Sep.
2004 "US scrambling to establish a link between Iraq and al-Qa'eda is so far frankly unconvincing.

"To get public and Parliamentary support for military options we have to be convincing that the threat is so serious/imminent that it is worth sending our troops to die for."

The second problem was "the end state". What sort of Iraq would we be left with? "Regime change does not stack up. It sounds like a grudge match between Bush and Saddam."

What was to stop any new leader acquiring weapons of mass destruction? "It would be almost impossible to maintain UN sanctions on a new leader who came in promising a fresh start." URL: https://news.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2004/09/18/nwar118.xml
18.Sep.
2004 But broad support for regime change brought two real problems, Mr Ricketts said. The first was the threat. "The truth is that what has changed is not the pace of Saddam Hussein's WMD programmes, but our tolerance of them post-11 September. I am relieved that you decided to postpone publication of the unclassified document. URL: https://news.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2004/09/18/nwar118.xml

2004 MI6 opposed revealing details of its intelligence and, at any event, it didn't back up the claims Mr Blair wanted the dossier to make. The latest Joint Intelligence Committee assessment, dated Friday, March 15, said information on Saddam's weapons of mass destruction was "sporadic and patchy".

It was barely able to back up the claim that Saddam had any sort of weapons programme, confining itself to concluding: "We believe Iraq retains some production equipment + some small stocks of chemical warfare agent precursors + may have hidden small quantities of agents and weapons. There is no intelligence on any biological agent production facilities." URL: https://news.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2004/09/18/nwar118.xml
17.Mar.2003 -
The following day, Sunday,-the US deputy defence secretary, Paul Wolfowitz, was invited to lunch at the British ambassador's residence.

Mr Wolfowitz was the most hard-line of those within the administration advocating an attack on Iraq, one of the key players the British would have to win over if they were to have a chance of persuading the Americans to wait for the UN backing Mr Blair needed to sell another American war to Britain.

If he bought the secret plan to ensnare Saddam, it was odds-on that everybody else in the administration would too. The Prime Minister would be happy to see the back of the Iraqi dictator, Sir Christopher told Mr Wolfowitz. But they had to make it legal.

Earlier that day, Ms Short had gone on British television denouncing the idea of "blind military action against Iraq" and hinting she would resign from Cabinet if Britain backed a US invasion. It epitomised the problems Mr Blair faced, Sir Christopher told his guest. The British ambassador described his discussions with Mr Wolfowitz in a letter to Sir David Manning. "I opened by sticking very closely to the script that you used with Condi Rice. We backed regime change, but the plan had to be clever and failure was not an option.

"I then went through the need to wrongfoot Saddam on the inspectors and the UN Security Council Resolutions and the critical importance of the Middle East peace plan. If all this could be accomplished skilfully, we were fairly confident that a number of countries could come on board." A day later, Iain Duncan Smith, the Conservative Party leader, went one step further than Mr Blair in backing a US invasion. "Saddam must go," he said.

An ICM poll found that, with more than half the country against Britain supporting a US-led invasion, Conservative voters were marginally more opposed than Labour voters.

Mr Blair was going to have to wait for the dossier he wanted to win over the Left of the party. Mr Straw told the Prime Minister there was no way that any meaningful declassified report on Iraq could be published.

2004 "He also wants your support. He is still smarting from the comments by other European leaders on his Iraq policy.

This gives you real influence: on the public relations strategy; on the UN and weapons inspections; and on US planning for a military campaign. This could be critically important. I think there is a real risk that the Administration underestimates the difficulties. They may agree that failure isn't an option, but this does not mean that they will avoid it." URL: https://news.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2004/09/18/nwar118.xml
18.Sep.
2004 It was now that Mr Blair sent Sir David Manning to Washington to try to impress on the Americans the problems they faced.

Despite the fears in London over US belligerence, Sir David's memo was relatively optimistic.

"Prime Minister," it began. "I had dinner with Condi on Tuesday; and talks and lunch with her and an NSC [National Security Council] team on Wednesday (to which Christopher Meyer also came). These were good exchanges + particularly frank when we were one-on-one at dinner. We spent a long time at dinner on Iraq. It is clear that Bush is grateful for your support and has registered that you are getting flak.

"I said that you would not budge in your support for regime change but you had to manage a press, a Parliament and a public opinion that was very different than anything in the States. And you would not budge on your insistence that, if we pursued regime change, it must be very carefully done and produce the right result. Failure was not an option. Condi's enthusiasm for regime change is undimmed. But there were some signs, since we last spoke, of greater awareness of the practical difficulties and political risks.

"From what she said, Bush has yet to find the answers to the big questions: how to persuade international opinion that military action against Iraq is necessary and justified; what value to put on the exiled Iraqi opposition; how to coordinate a US/allied military campaign with internal opposition (assuming there is any); what happens on the morning after?

"Bush will want to pick your brains. He will also want to hear whether he can expect coalition support. I told Condi that we realised that the Administration could go it alone if it chose. But if it wanted company, it would have to take account of the concerns of its potential coalition partners."

Sir David said he had warned Ms Rice that the weapons inspectors issue was key and had to be handled in a way that would persuade Europe in particular that America realised the war had to be legal.

"Renewed refusal by Saddam to accept unfettered inspections would be a powerful argument," he said, adding that he had told her it was of "paramount importance" that the allies also dealt with the Middle East issue.

28.Sep.2004 Neither side, meanwhile, is under-estimating the opposition. It is a quirk of history that both men have drawn over the years on the teaching of their shared Yale oratory professor, Rollin Osterweis. Both men were at Yale two years apart from one another + both took classes on oratory and debating skills with the professor. It was Mr Kerry who became one of his star pupils. Most famously, in 1966 Mr Kerry took on a travelling British group to debate the relevance of the UN. Mr Kerry championed the world body and defeated the visitors.

Zwei weitere Fernsehduelle folgen am 8. und 13. 27.Sep.2004 Unprecedented : The 2000 Presidential Election is the riveting story about the battle for the Presidency in Florida and the undermining of democracy in America. Filmmakers Richard Ray Pérez and Joan Sekler examine modern America's most controversial political contest: the election of George W. Bush. What emerges is a disturbing picture of an election marred by suspicious irregularities, electoral injustices + sinister voter purges in a state governed by the winning candidate's brother. George W. Bush stole the presidency of the USA… and got away with it. " …the movie highlights those on the front lines —from the African-Americans who were turned away from the polling booths for assorted reasons. In one memorable scene the filmmakers freeze-frame a 'protest' against the ballot recount, identifying participants as staff members of Republican elected officials." -- Elaine Dutka, Los Angeles Times

LeBor, Adam. Hitler's Secret Bankers: The Myth of Swiss Neutrality During the Holocaust. Secaucus NJ: Birch Lane Press (Carol Publishing Group), 1997. 261 pages. In the early 1990s, the World Jewish Restitution Organization and the World Jewish Congress, with help from U.S. Senator Alfonse D'Amato, put pressure on Switzerland to compensate holocaust victims for stolen money and property that the Nazis had deposited in Swiss banks. Other wartime Jews opened accounts in Switzerland at the first hint of trouble ahead, but for years Swiss bankers demanded death certificates from surviving heirs before releasing assets, even though no such certificates were issued at Auschwitz.

This book reveals the extent of Swiss collaboration with the Nazis. Despite its stolen gold from Belgium and Holland, the Nazis needed foreign currency to pay for the war machine.

The happy combination of formal Swiss neutrality, along with discreet and uninquisitive Swiss bankers, allowed the Nazis to exchange this gold for currency.

WWII.-throughout-The Swiss-based Bank for International Settlements + its American president, McKittrick, Thomas also worked alongside Nazis to keep international finance fluid. After demolishing the myth of Swiss neutrality on economic matters, the author looks at the Swiss wartime record for accepting Jewish refugees who were fleeing the Nazis. There are some troubling details, but on balance this issue turns out to be something of a mixed bag.

26.Sep.2004 Israel claimed that the whole affair had been a tragic accident based on mistaken identification of the ship. The American government accepted the explanation.

For more than 30 years many people have disbelieved the official explanation but have been unable to rebut it convincingly.

Now, Dead in the Water uses startling new evidence to reveal the truth behind the seemingly inexplicable attack.

The film combines dramatic reconstruction of the events, with new access to former officers in the US and Israeli armed forces and intelligence services who have decided to give their own version of events. article5073.htm

26.Sep.2004 Not for many years has there been such a gap - in America as well as Britain - between the people and the government they elected. Blair's most recent remarks are speeches made - to quote that Owen poem - "to children ardent for some desperate glory". Ken Bigley's blindfolded face is our latest greatest crisis. But let's not forget what went before.

URL: https://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article6967.htm
26.Sep.2004 How much more of this tomfoolery are we, the public, expected to stomach? We are fighting in "the crucible of global terrorism", according to Lord Blair of Kut. What are we to make of this nonsense? Of course, he didn't tell us we were going to have a Second Iraq War when he helped to start the First Iraq War, did he? And he didn't tell the Iraqis that, did he? No, we had come to "liberate" them. So let's just remember the crisis before the crisis before the crisis. Let's go back to last November when our Prime Minister was addressing the Lord Mayor's banquet. The Iraq war, he informed us then - and presumably he was still referring to the First Iraq War - was "the battle of seminal importance for the early 21st century".
Well, he can say that again. But just listen to what else Lord Blair of Kut informed us about the war. "It will define relations between the Muslim world and the West. It will influence profoundly the development of Arab states and the Middle East. It will have far-reaching implications for the future of American and Western diplomacy."
And he can say that again, can't he? For it is difficult to think of anything more profoundly dangerous for us, for the West, for the Middle East, for Christians and Muslims since the Second World War - the real second war, that is - than Blair's war in Iraq. And Iraq, remember, was going to be the model for the whole Middle East.

Every Arab state would want to be like Iraq. Iraq would be the catalyst - perhaps even the "crucible" - of the new Middle East. Spare me the hollow laughter.

Car bomb kills Hamas operative in Syria; Israeli sources acknowledge involvement
26.Sep.2004 DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) Israel assassinated a Palestinian militant from Hamas with a car bomb that exploded just after he started his vehicle Sunday.

The killing was Israel's first slaying of a Hamas member on Syrian soil and came after weeks of warnings that members of the Islamic militant group would not be safe anywhere.

Hamas responded by suggesting it may take its fight against Israel outside the Palestinian territories, according to a statement on its Web site.

"The Zionist enemy has opened a new door for the struggle by transferring the battle outside the land of Palestine,

despite the fact that we in Hamas insisted on keeping our weapons against the enemy in the land which they occupied + we left hundreds of thousands of Zionists alone outside of the country," the statement said.

"By today's action, the Zionist enemy should shoulder the consequences of what it did."

Police at the scene of al-Zahraa district explosion were seen retrieving pieces of the body of Izz Eldine Subhi Sheik Khalil.

The car exploded outside his home at 10:45 a.m. when he tried to start it, Hamas officials said.

Witnesses, however, said Khalil, who had been speaking on his mobile phone, started the car and had just begun moving in the white Mitsubishi Jeep when it exploded some 10 yards from his home.

In Israel, the government issued no statement, but security officials acknowledged Israeli involvement in the killing. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity.
