21.Jul.2004 Poll: Latino Voters Favor Kerry [KFJ965]

A new poll by The Washington Post, Univision and the Tomas Rivera Policy Institute show Kerry [KFJ965] with a commanding lead over Bush [BGW968] among Latino voters.

Those polled were critical of Bush [BGW968] 's handling of the economy and the war in Iraq.

The findings suggest that, at this point in the campaign, Bush [BGW968] is falling short of his goal of notably improving on the 35 % share of the Hispanic vote he received four years ago, although his advisers said they believe he is still on track to do so. Kerry [KFJ965] advisers, in contrast, said they are determined to keep Bush [BGW968] from winning as much of the Hispanic vote as he did in 2000.

....Competition for Hispanic voters remains fierce. Latinos now outnumber blacks, rank as the fastest-growing minority group in the country and are less solidly attached to the Democratic Party than are blacks. The 2000 census counted more than 35 million Hispanics in the United States, a 50 % increase in one decade.

Latino voters who were surveyed were sharply critical of the war in Iraq. More than six in 10 -- 63 % -- said the war was not worth fighting, a view shared by slightly more than half of all voters nationally. Fewer than a third of all Latinos and fewer than half of all voters believe the war justified its costs. Latinos also are more pessimistic about the war on terrorism than the overall population is, with 37 % saying the United States is winning and 40 % saying it is losing.

23.Jul.2004 In contrast to its own findings that there were no systemic problems, however, the Army report also cites a February report from the International Committee for the Red Cross that alleged that "methods of ill treatment" were "used in a systematic way" by the USA military in Iraq.

94 cases is not an isolated problem. It is a systemic failure that indicates the need for a comprehensive overhaul of current policies. For more, check out this Human Rights First Press Release. 23.Jul.2004 The Good + Bad of the 11.Sep.2001 Report -ACLU provides its take on the 11.Sep.2001 report released today.

The good news: 11.Sep.2001 Report is critical of USA Adminstration's excessive secrecy + of the USA Patriot Act.

23.Jul.2004-11.Sep.2001 Report does not recommend that any of the provisions scheduled to sunset be made permanent.

23.Jul.2004 11.Sep.2001 The bad news: Unfortunately, there are some recommendations that raise civil liberties concerns;

two of the most salient are calls for the backdoor creation of national ID cards in the form of a standardized drivers licenses + a cabinet-level intelligence czar.

"A Senate-confirmed intelligence director sitting in USA White House would be in the hip pocket of USA president," Romero added.

The ACLU questioned whether pitting USA FBI ’s culture of case-oriented law enforcement against the CIA ’s culture of covert, subversive operations, under one chief, would result in a further weakening of civil liberties protections in the FBI ’s intelligence work.

Similarly, if the new director were to have operational control over both domestic + foreign intelligence work - that is, real authority over both USA FBI + USA CIA - he or she could blur the lines between the agencies’ two very different missions.

The powers accorded intelligence gathering + law enforcment agencies are different for good reason.

The powers accorded intelligence gathering + law enforcment agencies are different to prevents ANY Government from making an end run around the Fourth Amendment.

The ACLU has an excellent explanation of the issue here. Additional arguments are available in The Gilmore Report (pdf) which was prepared 00.000.2003 by a USA federal advisory panel (the Gilmore Commission), chaired by Jim Gilmore, a former Republican Party chairman + Governor of Virginia. URL: https://www.talkleft.com/
23.Jul.2004 Under the current plan, three separate tribunals will hear 72 cases a week so each detainee can get a hearing within four months.

Unlike traditional civilian justice, USA government will have one big advantage: The burden of proving innocence will rest with the detainees. Detainees won't get lawyers, but "personal representatives," military officials without any legal background, who will offer advice to prisoners, lay out unclassified portions of their dossiers + help inmates make their case to the tribunal.

What if a detainee wants to call a witness to repudiate the charges? It will be very difficult if not impossible: URL: https://www.talkleft.com/

23.Jul.2004 FBI Warns of Terrorist Attack on Media at DNC

We wish we were making this up, but we're not:

The FBI said on Friday it was investigating "unconfirmed information" of a possible attack on media vehicles during the Democratic National Convention, which begins on Monday in Boston. "The FBI has received unconfirmed information that a domestic group is planning to disrupt the Democratic National Convention by attacking media vehicles with explosives or incendiary devices," the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Boston field office said in a statement. ...spokeswoman for the Boston FBI told Reuters that the bureau had notified media organizations of the probe because they were potential targets.

23.Jul.2004 Panel on Supreme Court to Meet at DNC

People for the American Way will be hosting a panel on USA Supreme Court at the DNC next week in Boston.

Titled "Four More Years or Forty More Years," this is one event we encourage everyone to attend.

The current Supreme Court is closely divided on basic constitutional issues, with many key cases being decided by 5-4 or 6-3 votes. The next President is likely to nominate two, three, or even four new Supreme Court justices who will have a huge and long-lasting impact on constitutional rights, liberties and legal protections. People For the American Way’s panel, “Four More Years or Forty More Years?” seeks to educate and mobilize progressive voters around the future of the Supreme Court.

23.Jul.2004 Those protesting the Republican National Convention — + I will be one of them

The delegates to the RNC, + millions of other Americans, will continue to ignore voices calling for equality under the law, for constitutional rights, for the Principles of the Nuremberg Tribunal.

Those who most need to hear the arguments against tyranny and for democratic (note the small "d") plurality will not hear them.

02.Nov.2004 Everything is at stake in this next election.

Not since Andrew Jackson have we had a president so bent on destroying the system of governmental checks + balances,

on ignoring Congress + the "activist judiciary", on casting aside the rule of law for the rule of the Executive.

USA survived Andrew Jackson just as it survived the ravages of the Sedition Act + President Lincoln's suspension of habeus corpus . URL: https://www.warblogging.com/

that a White House official — nay, multiple White House officials — broke the law by revealing the fact that Mr. Wilson's wife was a covert CIA officer.

We see the misplaced national discourse everywhere.

04.Jul.2004 Nicole + Jeff Rank of Chorpus Christi, Texas attended President Bush [BGW968] s rally in West Virginia, as the Charleston Gazette reports.

Nicole + Jeff Rank of Chorpus Christi, Texas were allowed into the rally by the Secret Service + local police under the belief that they were pro-Bush [BGW968] .

Once safely inside the venue, + after the event had begun, the Ranks removed their outer garments to reveal anti-Bush [BGW968] T-shirts.

The Ranks were promptly arrested by local police officers operating on the orders of the Secret Service.

They were escourted out of the venue + charged with criminal trespass.

The charges against the Ranks have been rightfully dropped.

It was their right and is their right to petition the government for a redress of their grievances + that was what they were doing.

But the Ranks' story is only on of many.

Dozens, if not hundreds, of USA citizens have been confronted by the police or Secret Service for sharing their anti-Bush [BGW968] views.

Thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands, of others have been prevented by police or Secret Service from getting anywhere near the government they wish to petition.

Where is the national discussion of the Ranks' silencing?

Where are the talk radio hosts to discuss the supression of USA constitutional rights?

They are too busy discussing whether or not Kerry [KFJ965] has received Botox injections URL: https://www.warblogging.com/
19.Jul.2004 The Level of Discourse URL: https://www.warblogging.com/
23.Jul.2004 America today is at a critical point in its history. The nation is at war. Fundamental issues of constitutional law, civil liberties, democratic process and the very nature of the American character are being decided at this very moment.

The upcoming presidential election between current President Bush [BGW968] challenger Kerry [KFJ965] will be a referendum on all these issues, and many more. Americans will decide whether they want a presidency that invades nations without provocation, they will decide whether they want a president who stifles dissent at home.

On talk radio and on many of the nation's television news stations, however, the discussion is not about habeus corpus or aggressive war. The discussion is not about car bombings in Iraq. It is about Kerry [KFJ965] 's hair or wrinkles, or perhaps about the purple hearts that the candidate won in Vietnam.

The discussion is about Theresa Heinz Kerry [KFJ965] 's fortune (earned, incidentally, by a Republican). The discussion is about banning gay marriage.
