"New large-scale studies of DNA are causing a rethinking of the very nature of genes. A typical gene is no longer conceived of as a single chunk of DNA encoding a single protein.

It turns out, for example, that several different proteins may be produced from a single stretch of DNA. Most of the molecules produced from DNA may not even be proteins, but rather RNA.

The familiar double helix of DNA no longer has a monopoly on heredity:

other molecules clinging to DNA can produce striking differences between two organisms with the same genes — and those molecules can be inherited along with DNA. Scientists have been working on exploring the 98% of the genome not identified as the protein coding region. One of the biggest of these projects is an effort called the Encyclopedia of DNA Elements, or 'Encode.'

And its analysis of only 1% of the genome reveal the genome to be full of genes that are deeply weird, at least by the traditional standard of what a gene is supposed to be and do.

The Encode team estimates that the average protein-coding region produces 5.7 different transcripts. Different kinds of cells appear to produce different transcripts from the same gene.

And it gets even weirder. Our DNA is studded with millions of proteins and other molecules, which determine which genes can produce transcripts and which cannot.

New cells inherit those molecules along with DNA.

In other words, heredity can flow through a second channel."

The Stratofortress disintegrated on impact with the sea ice and parts of it began to melt through to the fjord below. The high explosives surrounding the four nuclear weapons on board detonated without setting off the nuclear devices, which had not been armed by the crew. The Pentagon maintained that all four weapons had been 'destroyed' and while technically true, investigators piecing together fragments from the crash could only account for three of the weapons. Investigators found that 'something melted through ice such as burning primary or secondary.' A subsequent search by a US submarine was beset by technical problems and, as winter encroached and the ice began to freeze over, the search was abandoned. 'There was disappointment in what you might call a failure to return all of the components,' said a former nuclear weapons designer at the Los Alamos nuclear laboratory. 'It would be very difficult for anyone else to recover classified pieces if we couldn't find them.'"

A recent lawsuit alleged that Nasser Kazeminy, a close friend of Sen. Norm Coleman (R-MN), used his business DMT to funnel $75,000 to Coleman’s wife’s insurance firm.

A new lawsuit, however, claims that Kazeminy originally tried to steer the money directly to Coleman, Politico reports:

[T]he second lawsuit alleges — and it’s breathtakingly stupid if true — that Kazeminy at first ordered DMT execs to pay Coleman directly.

“ Our clients were advised that Mr. Kazeminy first sought to have DMT make quarterly cash payments of $25,000 to Senator Norm Coleman of Minnesota,” writes plaintiff’s attorney Anthony Paduano, citing a “confidential” informant.

What’s more, this latest suit reveals that the payments to Coleman’s wife’s firm were hardly for insurance purposes, “because DMT, which services offshore oil platforms and port facilities, already used Aon for its insurance.”

As a side point, Irgun was one of the very first organized, extra-national organizations committed to violence that our federal law enforcement agencies ever investigated at length; this was long before the Bush Administration's phony, self-serving, unproductive "War on Terror." I'd been aware of the Pritzkers (Chicago billionaire Penny Pritzker was the Obama Campaign's National Finance Chair). But I'd not been that aware of Lester Crown (and the Crown family).
Lester Crown is the family patriarch, and apparently prefers to operate low key, behind the scenes. Billionaire (Lester Crown and family = #222 in Forbes list of World's richest people). Corrupt Chicago businessman and political influence buyer. Family owns a large share of General Dynamics (used to be the biggest shareholder; Lester was President 1953-66). Given immunity in return for testimony in a major bribery scandal in the 70's. Was allowed to retain top-secret security clearance (as Executive Vice President of General Dynamics) over the Pentagon's objections (Pentagon tried to revoke the security clearance when he lied to them about the bribery case, but was overruled by an independent examiner and appeals board). There is no hint of irony, no shadow of doubt, in the paeans they sing to their own wonderfulness, as if casting a vote for Obama indicates something good about them, and that their action - to cast a vote for a black candidate - represents a triumph over racism as such. We are all post-racial now!
The self congratulation is usually accompanied by a lecture of what this win must mean for the rest of us, such as Krugman's pronouncment that if I am not personally moved to tears, something must be wrong with me. I'll add this.
In Hollywood films, one barrier was breached when white audiences came to accept black actors playing heroic leads. It was a good day when the studios discovered that Sidney Poitier could carry a film, even though he spent the 1960s playing characters defined by race. Today, audiences embrace Will Smith in heroic roles that could have gone to an actor of any background. In I Am Legend, Smith plays a role previously played by Charlton Heston and intended (at one point) for Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Best of all, in my judgment, is the fact that today's black actors also get the opportunity to play the antagonist - as Michael Clark Duncan does in Daredevil, or as Morgan Freeman does in Chain Reaction . No-one watching that film has ever argued that casting Freeman as a nefarious backstabbing schemer insulted an entire group of people, although we would have heard such arguments back in the 1960s and '70s. He plays an individual, not a symbol, not an archetype - one man.
Onscreen equality was achieved not when black actors got the lead, but when they found they could play the lead or the heavy.
I cherish the idea of America electing a black president. I cherish even more my freedom to say that I think Barack Obama is just another corrupt, lying politician - neither the first nor the last corrupt liar to be elected to our highest office. In my eyes, he's not a symbol, not an archetype, not a representative of any group. I'm not talking about anyone or anything else. Just that one guy.

Grand Rapids, Mich. has become the most recent city to question the practice of fluoridating public water, as part of a growing tendency for local governments to question the use of many chemicals that formerly been taken for granted.
"I think this pattern has been growing because there is better environmental health research that draws connections between low levels of chemical exposure and changes in our bodies," said Dr. Howard Hu of the University of Michigan.

"As the research has become more sophisticated, it shows that environmental toxicants can do other things beyond just kill you: they can stunt your growth, change behavior and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease."
Grand Rapids was the first city in the world to fluoride its public water supply, based on assurances from the government that the chemical reduces the risk of tooth decay while posing no serious risks. But based on a number of studies linking fluoride to problems with the thyroid, kidneys, central nervous system and skeletal system - including cancers - the city's director of environmental sustainability, Corky Overmyer, has ordered a new review of the scientific evidence concerning the risks and benefits of the chemical.
"This has been on my radar screen for a while," Overmyer said.
Overmyer says that while he has not drawn any conclusions about the safety fluoride, the scientific evidence gave him reason enough for concern. Having already gotten chlorine removed from the city's water supply several years ago, Overmyer did not expect the vicious backlash that developed to his questioning of fluoride. From large medical associations to the mayor and even his own dentist, Overmyer's decision has drawn fierce criticism.
"I had no idea [fluoride] was that sensitive an issue," Overymyer said.
Fluoridation opponents have cheered the news, however, confident that the scientific evidence will speak for itself.
"If Grand Rapids falls, that could be the beginning of the end of fluoride," said Paul Connett, director of the Fluoride Action Network.

In yesterday’s White House Press conference, spokesperson Tony Fratto responded to a question about whether or not the economy is currently in recession by saying, “We don’t make determinations or predictions on…the bottom of the business cycle.”

Noting the obvious euphemism, one reporter observed, “I may be wrong, but I’ve never heard anyone ever say the word recession from the podium.” The reporter asked, “Is that word radioactive or why isn’t it said?” Fratto responded:

[We] think its relatively irrelevant to the primary focus that we have which is dealing with implementing policy. I mean, I don’t think the American people sit around and say, “Boy, why won’t they say it?” … I don’t think anyone who has stood at this podium could be accused of cheerleading the economy or looking through rose colored glasses. We try to be very, very transparent.

The White House has yet to admit what a majority of Americans and economists now agree on: The U.S. economy is in recession. Just yesterday, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce declared, “We are currently in…a recession.” Last month, former Fed Chairman Paul Volcker said, “[T]he economy, I believe, is in recession,” and Steve Forbes said similarly that “we’re in a recession, a very serious recession.”

Despite Fratto’s claims to the contrary, the White House has been anything but “transparent” with regard to the condition of the economy. Indeed, while the economy edged closer and closer to crisis this year, the Bush White House put on their pom poms and engaged in economic happy talk:

Krasse Scheisse. Beim nächsten Heimspiel gegen Florenz kommt es sogar noch zu einer Steigerung. Zwei Fans, die einige den restriktiven Auflagen von 1 m sogar entsprechenden Fahnen zum Stadion bringen, werden ebenfalls festgesetzt und fast eine Stunde kontrolliert. Ihnen wird wortwörtlich 'Präventivhaft' angedroht, die eigentlich den Einschränkung entsprechenden Fahnen sollen zur 'Gefahrenabwehr' konfisziert werden. Und wie so oft in letzter Zeit geht hier vom Staat mehr Gefahr aus als von den Bürgern.

At the American Bar Association’s conference on national security yesterday, CIA senior deputy general counsel John Rizzo recommended that President-elect Barack Obama “address immediately detainee issues at Guantanamo Bay and in the CIA’s interrogation program.” Rizzo said that the agency’s interrogation and detainee program needs “urgent” attention:

The CIA detention and interrogation program, he said, is just as urgent. “That’s going to have to be dealt with immediately,” Rizzo said. “We do not have the luxury to wait and muddle through.” He knows how tough the issue is–his involvement in helping the CIA construct the program earned him opposition in Congress that killed his nomination to be the CIA’s general counsel.

The Wall Street Journal’s Siobhan Gorman did not report whether Rizzo said anything specific about how the program needs to be “dealt” with.

This information would be important since, as Gorman notes, Rizzo controversially helped construct the program that pushed the boundaries of torture.

Eine solch umfassende digitale Überwachung hat die Welt noch nicht gesehen. Man werde "innovative und bahnbrechende Technologie" nutzen, um gegenüber den Terroristen "weit voraus" zu bleiben.
