See Dick. Run! First official report released in Cheney hunting accident

FEBRUARY 13--The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department today issued a report on Vice President Dick Cheney's accidental shooting Saturday of a fellow quail hunter on a sprawling Texas ranch. The hunting accident report, a copy of which you can find below, briefly recounts how Cheney plugged Harry Whittington, a 78-year-old Austin lawyer, with birdshot in the face, neck + chest. According to the state report, Cheney was wearing a "blaze orange" cap and "coat/vest" and brown trousers and was toting an Italian-made Perazzi 28-gauge shotgun. In addition to the document's release, wildlife officials reported today that while Cheney had purchased a valid non-resident hunting license, he did not obtain a required "upland game bird stamp." As a result, a warning citation--which carries no fine or penalty--will be issued to Cheney, which state officials described as "routine." And as for whether Cheney would have needed to previously take a hunters education course, state wildlife officials noted that such classes are only required of hunters born on or after 02.Sep.1971 .

30.Jan.1941 Cheney was born.

While yet to release its report on the shooting, the Kenedy County Sheriff's Office this afternoon issued a press release noting that an "investigation reveals that there was no alcohol, or misconduct involved in the incident." In an interview with deputies, Whittington "collaborated Vice President Cheney's statement," according to the release, which concluded, "This was no more than a hunting accident." (3 pages)

14.Feb.2006 https://www.cannonfire.blogspot.com/But that's all deep background stuff + there's enough surface slime going down here to slide clear off the planet.

Big questions, like why were wounds that were reported by Ms. Armstrong to be so superficial keeping the victim in the ICU for 48 hours?

Was the shot fired from 30 yards or 30 feet;

both have been reported?

Why did it take almost three hours to get this poor guy admitted to the hospital after said incident, even with a medical crew at the scene?

When were authorities notified, as per TX law?

Why was the press not informed for 22 hours?

And was the sheriff allowed to interview Cheney or not; the reports are conflicting (though not really)?
Though the sheriff's office issued a statement that ruled out alcohol, there is no indication that any real tests were taken to verify this.

All manner of hunters have weighed in on these details + the consensus is pretty clear:

the only way this sort of thing does happen - and it does - is if the shooter is dumb or drunk or both.
For the best reading on all these questions, visit
Josh Marshall at TPM and Jane Hamsher + friends at firedoglake.

They raise a boatload of fascinating points, including the fact that Cheney only "hunts" in areas stocked with prepped prey (oh so manly), the 28 gauge he used is often referred to as "a lady's gun" (even more manly) +

- again -

Cheney has a medical team hovering likely inside the Secret Service comfort zone, courtesy of us taxpayers (the ultimate in today's 'manly').
Of particular interest, though, is the fact that Jack Reed + George Allen were on Fox this morning blasting Cheney not for blasting his buddy,

but for declassifying a NIE (National Intelligence Estimate), which has apparently been alledged by Libby.

Firedoglake raises the tantalizing observation that these two hyper-repug dogs were not brought out to protect the VP but to hound him. Et tu, Rupert ?
Could it be the time has come to put this ol' huntin' dog down? -dr. elsewhere
UPDATE: Like I said, hard to keep up. Smoking Gun has the sheriff's
press release and Cheney's citation for the incident.
Note that the report does not have a time associated with the report itself, only for the incident.

And note that the safety position for Cheney's gun was marked "unknown." Note also that Cheney's "hunting education" is marked "unknown," + Whittington's "no."

And take particular note of the second paragraph of the press release;

not only does it not make very good sense, but it does not note the times at which Whittington was moved to the two medical facilities.Permalink14.Feb.2006 https://www.cannonfire.blogspot.com/
The Dickie Fudd story is veritably exploding out there. The press corps is on fire, the blogosphere is practically vaporizing + there are now so many angles exposed, it's hard to keep up.
First of all, an alert commenter hooked us up with some background on Whittington's role in the funeralgate scandal during Georgie's last days as TX guv, one in which his Chief of Staff Allbaugh played a key role

(+ then went on to head FEMA, turn it over to Brownie so he could go lobby, ending up in NOLA to milk that tragedy for all it was worth while his protege floundered in fashion).

Evidently a lot of covering up of a lot of stuff was going on + a whistleblower who was fired,

then filed suit (and then evidently settled for a paltry $50,000?), has seemingly vanished from view.

That settlement datum is the most recent info I could find on that story, now I can't relocate it + Robert Bryce appears to have moved on from the whole shebang. Anyone have more?

Love Under a Microscope Zonk 86 smooth wombat writes "As today is one of the top five marketing-induced spending days, the obvious question is, what is love? Anthropologist Helen Fisher studied the brain's circuitry and found that the brain sees romantic love as a reward similar to chocolate, money or drugs. Does this mean that the mystery of love is less magical now that science has studied it under the microscope? According to Dr Fisher: 'You can know every ingredient in a piece of chocolate cake + you still sit down and eat that chocolate cake and it's wonderful,' she said. 'In the same way, you can know all the ingredients of romantic love and still feel that passion.'"

Although Google's policy states that it can hold data for up to 30 days, "Google intends to delete the information shortly after the electronic handoff + will never retain anything from a user's hard drive for more than 30 days", said Sundar Pichai, director of product management. With pressure on Google after the request by the Bush administration for personal information, privacy concerns may be hard hitting."
Magnetic Processors - Computing's New Future? CmdrTaco 179 metalcoat writes "For the first time researchers have created a working prototype of a radical new chip design based on magnetism instead of electrical transistors. As transistor-based microchips hit the limits of Moore's Law, a group of electrical engineers at the University of Notre Dame has fabricated a chip that uses nanoscale magnetic "islands" to juggle the ones and zeroes of binary code. Wolfgang Perod and his colleagues turned to the process of magnetic patterning (.pdf) to produce a new chip that uses arrays of separate magnetic domains. Each island maintains its own magnetic field. Because the chip has no wires, its device density and processing power may eventually be much higher than transistor-based devices. And it won't be nearly as power-hungry, which will translate to less heat emission and a cooler future for portable hardware like laptops."
Title: Chinese Claim Internet Censorship Modeled on West Zonk 202 ubermiester wrote to mention a NYT article reporting on a Chinese Press Briefing. At the event Liu Zhengrong, supervisor of Internet affairs for the Chinese State Council, stated that the state control of Internet access is based on Western models. From the article: "Mr. Liu said the major thrust of the Chinese effort to regulate content on the Web was aimed at preventing the spread of pornography or other content harmful to teenagers and children. He said that its concerns in this area differ minimally from those in developed countries. Human rights and media watchdog groups maintain that Chinese Web censorship puts greater emphasis on helping the ruling party maintain political control over its increasingly restive society. Such groups have demonstrated that many hundreds of Web sites cannot be easily accessed inside mainland China mainly because they are operated by governments, religious groups or political organizations that are critical of Chinese government policies or its political leaders."

März wieder in Kraft treten sollen.

Well, anyway. it will nevertheless be quite entertaining to watch him slime out of this one. meanwhile, it's pretty entertaining to watch
Scottie sweat his way through a surprisingly aggressive WH press corps!
https://www.cannonfire.blogspot.com/Of course, this imperious "above the law" attitude is just so Dick! But one cannot help but wonder just how all those federal and Supreme Court judges (scroll to end) he touted as the "greatest accomplishments" of this administration will help him in that podunk little Texas town.
oh, woops, forgot; he owns Texas, too.

https://www.cannonfire.blogspot.com/To make matters even worse - maybe even worse than blaming poor old Whittington! - (NOT better, Dick, NOT better), the VP has evidently refused to cooperate with the local sheriff in the shooting's investigation.

"Unser Auto ist in New York.

Frog-marching the Media to the Gallows -By Mike Whitney
The Times has proved once again that the elite-media is a steadfast partner in mobilizing the masses for unpopular wars. Despite the countless thousands of innocent people who have already been killed by the Time’s fear-mongering coverage of "imaginary" Iraqi WMD, the editors continue to use the corporate-bullhorn to call the nation to arms.

Tariq Ali: This is the real outrage : Yesterday, footage of British soldiers brutalising and abusing civilians in Iraq - beating teenagers with batons until they pass out, posing for the camera as they kick corpses - was made public.

This indictment comes a few weeks after another California man pled guilty to similar charges. Both attacks were attempts to make money off of adware affiliate programs. So who's really at fault here? The students? The hospital for not securing their computers and network? Or the adware companies for providing the incentive?"
Title: Being Enron's SysAdmin Zonk 77+ CowboyRobot writes "FreeBSD's Kirk McKusick has a long interview with Enron's former SysAdmin, Jarod Jenson, where he describes the nuts and bolts of working in and managing such a large-scale operation." From the article: "EnronOnline was a Web-based trading application. We had several hundred, even thousands of commodities that we would price in realtime, the same way that equities are priced. We were trying to push realtime pricing information out to clients who could do instantaneous transactions on them. People who are familiar with financial markets--the commodity markets--would recognize EnronOnline as sort of the same thing. We had a lot of the same issues that the markets had trying to push out realtime data--not only within our local network but also to the customers--as quickly as we could globally + trying to make sure that what every trader saw on the screen matched what every company in the world had on theirs."
Title: Microsoft Anti-Spyware Removes Norton Anti-Virus Zonk 383+ An anonymous reader writes "According to a story over at Washingtonpost.com, the latest definitions file for Microsoft's Anti-Spyware beta flags Symantec's Norton Antivirus products as a password-stealing trojan and prompts users to delete portions of the program. Users who follow the instructions hose their installation of Norton, requiring delicate Windows registry edits and a complete removal/reinstall of Norton. Microsoft's support forum is quickly filling up with complaints about this problem, many from businesses that have been pretty hard hit. This should be a cautionary tale about deploying beta products in production environments."

The Urgency of Now: Stopping the War on Iran -By Mike Kress
The neo-cons will use their tool at the UN, Ambassador John Bolton, to help create an international crisis and thereby justify attacks on Iran. Though there’s no evidence to prove that Iran has a nuclear weapons program, Iran’s refusal to halt its lawful nuclear programs will become the pretext for America’s next unnecessary war.

Dig deeper at Orange Grove

The State Opposition will no doubt be pleased with its upper house inquiry into the Orange Grove fiasco. It has succeeded in compounding the Government's misery as it watches the centre's retailers shut their doors and their employees get the sack. Significantly, the hearings have revealed the Premier, Bob Carr, as less than forthcoming about contacts with the powerful Westfield group which has successfully used the law to shut down Orange Grove. What the inquiry has not done, however, is answer the basic question of why Liverpool Council ever approved Orange Grove's rezoning from bulky goods complex to factory outlet in defiance of its Local Environmental Plan.

Of course, the parliamentary inquiry was always more concerned with goings on in Macquarie Street than at Liverpool Council. It hoped to find some skulduggery behind the State Government's refusal to endorse the rezoning of Orange Grove, even though the Government's stance was in line with rulings by the courts. Had the Carr Government been swayed by Westfield which has a shopping centre nearby? Mr Carr had denied any contact with Westfield or its chief, Frank Lowy, about Orange Grove. However, the inquiry revealed that a Westfield executive, Mark Ryan, had met Mr Carr's chief of staff, Graeme Wedderburn, last April to allege a whiff of corruption about the rezoning of Orange Grove. Mr Wedderburn alerted Mr Carr who told him to alert the Assistant Planning Minister, Diane Beamer. Ms Beamer, too, denied contact with Westfield over Orange Grove - but not for want of trying on Westfield's part. Westfield told the inquiry it had sent a letter to Ms Beamer unsuccessfully seeking a meeting and had tried to phone her (though Ms Beamer says she was not made aware of the call). The inquiry has illuminated the sort of access Westfield thinks it deserves - and actively pursues - but it has not turned up evidence of any favours for Mr Lowy.

With the public dirt-digging at Parliament House due to end on Monday, interest will shift to the Independent Commission Against Corruption which is also investigating the Orange Grove debacle, behind closed doors and without fanfare. The commission can compel evidence, making it a more effective forensic tool than any Upper House inquiry. The community will expect the commission's powers to be used to the full to sweep away the innuendo + to expose the facts about the Orange Grove rezoning.

12.Feb.2006 Of the big four voting vendors, Sequoia currently has the tidiest corporate ownership but the most recent indictment of an employee and the most prolific habit of hiring its own regulators. Besides hiring former California Secretary of State Bill Jones, Sequoia hired Kathryn Ferguson, the elections official who helped purchase Sequoia machines for Clark County, Nevada + Santa Clara County, California, as Vice President, Corporate Communications. In October 2003 she moved to Hart Intercivic. 28 Michael Frontera, former executive director of the Denver Election Commission, went to work for Sequoia after awarding it $6.6 million in contracts from his own department. 29 Alfie Charles, former spokesman for Secretary of State Bill Jones, This free internet version is available at www.BlackBoxVoting.org Black Box Voting 72 is now spokesman for Sequoia Voting Systems. 30 At the time of the bribery scandal, Sequoia Voting Systems was owned by Jefferson Smurfit Group, a company based in Ireland. In May 2002, Sequoia was purchased by Great Britain’s De La Rue plc + Phil Foster’s loyal and trusting boss, Peter Cosgrove, was retained and promoted. De La Rue is considered a blue-chip company. Its fortunes are heavily affected by politics + it has at least one politically active investor. It is the world’s biggest commercial money printer. De La Rue was one of the first British companies to profit from the war in Iraq, earning a quick windfall when it received the assignment to print the new Iraqi bank notes. During the first Bush administration, De La Rue was called in toward the tail end of Sandinista rule in Nicaragua to create new money. 31 De La Rue is also involved in Britain’s national lottery, through its investment in Camelot Group plc. In this capacity, it enraged British citizens when they learned that Camelot had assigned its executives a 40 percent pay hike while reducing the funds allocated to good works. 32 De La Rue would very much like to take Diebold’s position + not just in election systems. The firm also sells ATMs and smart cards and lists Diebold Inc. as one of its competitors. 33 In July 2003, the U.S. Department of Justice launched an investigation into a U.S. division of De La Rue, alleging that it had engaged in an illegal price-fixing scheme in relation to the supply of holograms for Visa banking cards, violating US antitrust laws. In a statement, De La Rue said the “individual implicated” in the pricefixing allegation had “left the business in October 1999.” 34 One of the most aggressive investors in De La Rue stock is the hugely wealthy Australian Lowy family, who by March 2003 had picked up 5.5 million shares (just over 3%) through their private investment vehicle, LFG Holdings. Frank Lowy is Australia’s second- richest man. He is highly political, particularly with pro-Israel issues + has come under fire for his company’s payments to Lord Levy, British Prime Minister Tony Blair’s “special envoy to the Middle East,” which the Aussie billionaire authorized directly. At first, his payments raised This free internet version is available at www.BlackBoxVoting.org Black Box Voting © 2004 Bev Harris • ISBN 1-890916-90-0 Company Information 73 suspicions of a “cash for access” intrigue at the highest level of British politics, but as the size of the payments (£250,000) became apparent, the Australian media began raising questions of “cash for foreign policy.” 35 The Lowy family contributes heavily to the Democratic Party. 36 On August 4, 2003, Sequoia Voting Systems quietly announced a partnership with VoteHere Inc. for electronic ballot verification on its touch-screen machines. 37 It is amazing how much money the elections industry is willing to spend just to avoid giving us ballots we can read and use for audits. The VoteHere system provides a receipt with a code number on it, not a human-readable ballot. You get to check your single vote using a secret code. If you believe this constitutes public counting of the vote then please meet me under the bridge at midnight and enter your special password into my PalmPilot + I’ll slip you a brown paper bag with some stock tips in it. Count on ’em. Trust me. Instead of allowing the vote to be counted in the open, viewed by citizens, the VoteHere solution requires us to give control of our elections to a handful of cryptographers with defense-industry ties. VoteHere Inc. Like a Timex watch, this company takes a licking but keeps on ticking. Launched by a cryptographer named Jim Adler during the height of the dot-com boom, VoteHere hoped to usher us into the brave new world of Internet voting. Adler picked up funding from Compaq Computer and Cisco Systems and Northwest Venture Associates, $15 million by November 2000. 38 He also did an honorable thing: He made his company’s source code available for review. Adler’s Internet voting system did not fare well in a simple review titled “Vote early, vote often and VoteHere,” a master’s thesis by Philip E. Varner. After defining threats to the publicly available VoteHere system in such areas as completeness, privacy, verifiability, fairness and reliability + creating an attack tree, Varner identified several weaknesses in the VoteHere system and concluded it was not ready for use. 39 Undaunted, the entrepreneurial Adler charged ahead with a plan This free internet version is available at www.BlackBoxVoting.org Black Box Voting 74 to have us try voting on totable Compaq iPAQ hardware using VoteHere software and online polling sites connected to the Internet. 40 But his Internet plans did not materialize + Adler also stopped making his source code available for public review. VoteHere persuaded places like Swindon, England + the city of Suwanee, Georgia, to try the system and conducted an online advisory election for the Conservative Party in Sweden. But by 2003, it had few sales to show for six years of work and $15 million in outside investments. I have seen no more sources of funding for VoteHere, nor much in the way of sales revenues, but one thing I did find was a board of directors spiked with power brokers from the defense industries. For a long time, VoteHere's chairman was Admiral Bill Owens, a member of the Defense Policy Board and Vice Chairman of Scientific Applications International Corp. (SAIC), which did the Diebold review for the state of Maryland. Robert Gates, former CIA director and head of the George Bush School of Business at Texas A&M, was another director. VoteHere may be trying to make a comeback with its Internet voting concept. It hired former Washington State Secretary of State Ralph Munro as its chairman. Pam Floyd, who had worked for Washington state elections director David Elliott, left to take a position with VoteHere for three years; she recently became Washington’s assistant state elections director + she oversees Washington’s Internet SERVE project. Washington state is now leaving the door open (through legislation proposed by Munro crony and current secretary of state Sam Reed) to arrange for more Internet voting in the state. In 2003, VoteHere decided to go after the innards of other vendors’ touch screens, perhaps hoping to become the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval for electronic voting machines by claiming that its system verifies the integrity of the vote. This verification system is another way to avoid giving voters the paper ballots they are asking for.

Despite Misgivings in Mongolia, Explorers Hope to Find Site of Genghis Khan's 800-Year-Old Tomb

By Edward Cody Washington Post Foreign Service
09.Feb.2006; A20 ULAN BATOR, Mongolia -- On the vast flatlands of eastern Mongolia, enclosed by a two-mile wall in the form of an oval, diggers have uncovered tantalizing clues to the solution of one of history's enduring mysteries: the site of Genghis Khan's secret grave.

Finding the spot where the great Mongolian conqueror was laid to rest in 1227 by his famed horseback warriors would fill in a blank that has fascinated historians for centuries. Although he and his descendants galloped out of Mongolia to subdue most of the known world, Genghis Khan was buried without a monument or even a headstone, in keeping with Mongol belief that the dead should not be disturbed. Legend has it that the soldiers who carried out the mission were slaughtered to make sure the secret was safe for all time.

Now, scientists at Ohio State University, US, appear to have solved the mystery by creating a topographical model of the Moon and mapping gravity signatures of rocks all the way to the core.

Senator Dayton’s statement on Michael Brown’s testimony is below.

Today’s testimony by former FEMA Director Michael Brown raised very serious questions about when the failure of New Orleans’ levees was first reported to Secretary Chertoff and to President Bush. Both men have previously stated that they were not aware of the massive flooding in New Orleans until midday Tuesday. Yet, Mr. Brown testified that he spoke personally with the President, who was vacationing at his ranch, on the weekend before Hurricane Katrina struck + also with top White House staff on Monday afternoon. Likewise, Secretary Chertoff’s Deputy and his Chief of Staff were both e-mailed Monday evening with reports of the levees’ failure.

It is incomprehensible how those top Administration officials failed to notify the President and the Secretary immediately of the catastrophe that was unfolding in New Orleans.”

Reply Bush-bots will try to spin this forever, but there's not getting around it. When informed that a second hijacked airliner had slammed into the second WTC + that "America is under attack", the "Commander in Chief" just sat there for seven minutes, totally incurious about the developing situation and what defenses America was mounting to counter the assault.
Any human being in his position would have immediately excused himself ("I'm sorry, children. A matter has come up requiring my attention. It's been a special honor sharing this day with you, but duty calls...")
Any human being, especially the Commander in Chief of the USA military, would have been burning to assess the situation and response procedures more comprehensively and precisely.
No one would conceivably sit there for seven minutes looking nervous - unless they already knew what was going on.
The only half-way rationale I've seen from Bush supporters is that maybe security protocol dictated that the President remain seated and doing what he was doing until they assessed the security situation regarding his immediate movements.
The problem with this is that they already had the school and immediate surroundings well secured as is stricly required. That's their job + they do it well. Everywhere the President goes, the "red phone" goes.  Everywhere the President goes, the "black suitcase goes". Everywhere the President goes, he must be able to be instantly informed of attack + be able to quickly approve response protocols.
To sit for seven minutes + not even try to find out just what the hell was gong on....
There's just no explaining such aberrational behavior away.
And his face tells it all.

Design architecture for the World Trade Center was provided by Minoru Yamasaki & Associates. Emery Roth & Sons served as the architect of record. Since these people have nothing to hide, they should provide the architectural plans of the World Trade Center, for all to see. This will enable any misunderstandings regarding the facts of the collapse to be established and corrected. In fact, Minoru Yamasaki & Associates, Roth & Sons, or their descendent companies, should put the entire set of architectural plans on the internet.

Article on the World Trade Center collapse from Scientific American.

Impacts of the magnitude of those that occurred on September 11 were considered by the designers of the twin towers and the towers were designed to survive them. The possibility of a jet-fuel fires the size of those that occurred on September 11 were considered by the designers of the twin towers and the towers were designed to survive them. In order to explain why the towers collapsed, where other steel framed buildings would have survived, the WTC conspirators invented the "truss theory". The "truss theory" is seriously flawed. It cannot explain how the perimeter wall transmits wind loading to the central core. The "truss theory", if accepted, leads to a 33 percent underestimate of the amount of steel in the towers. That is, the "truss theory" does not account for the whereabouts of 32,000 tons of steel (of 96,000 tons) used in the construction of each of the towers. The "truss theory" is a lie that has been spun to convince a gullible public, that what appeared to be the controlled demolitions of three of the World Trade Center buildings, were actually natural consequents of the aircraft strikes and not controlled demolitions at all. There are photos showing large steel girders positioned where the "official" line states that only (double) trusses should be. In all, one has to conclude that the "truss theory" is false and that those who push it are part of a large conspiracy to deceive the American people. ARCHITECTS MUST PROVIDE WORLD TRADE

11.Feb.2006 Reagan-Bush Security Breaches -By Robert Parry 23.Feb.2001
11.Feb.2006 While secretly shipping those weapons to Iran, Reagan-Bush officials also were sharing military intelligence with Saddam Hussein’s Iraq. Substantial evidence now exists that the Reagan-Bush administration also helped arrange sophisticated military equipment for Iraq through third countries, such as Chile.

In a sworn affidavit in 1995, one of Reagan’s national security aides, Howard Teicher, described CIA contacts with Chile for arranging cluster bombs and other armaments for Iraq.

This covert assistance helped Saddam Hussein build his army into a powerful regional force and may have emboldened him in 1990 when he decided to invade Kuwait, an action that touched off the Persian Gulf War and continues to have geopolitical consequences to this day.
11.Feb.2006 "I can only trust that somebody who is a patriot ... and interested in the survival of this nation ... made the decision that the national policy objectives were worth the risk of a temporary drawdown of readiness," said Lt. Gen. Peter G. Barbules in a deposition to Iran-contra investigators in 1987.
11.Feb.2006 The freewheeling Reagan-Bush foreign policy led to other secret compromises with past and present U.S. adversaries. In the early 1980s, the Reagan-Bush administration secretly permitted the shipment of U.S. military equipment to the radical Islamic government of Iran through Israel.

"It was clear to me after my conversations with people on high that indeed we had agreed that the Israelis could transship to Iran some American-origin military equipment," said Nicholas Veliotes, the Reagan administration's assistant secretary of state for the Middle East. [See Robert Parry's book, Trick or Treason .]

Those early transactions set the stage for the expanded Iran-contra shipments of U.S. missiles to Iran in 1985-86, even as President Reagan vowed that he would never compromise with terrorists such as the Iranian-backed kidnappers of Americans in Beirut, Lebanon.

On June 18, 1985, for instance, Reagan said, “Let me further make it plain to the assassins in Beirut and their accomplices, wherever they may be, that America will never make concessions to terrorists – to do so would only invite more terrorism – nor will we ask nor pressure any other government to do so. Once we head down that path there would be no end to it, no end to the suffering of innocent people, no end to the bloody ransom all civilized nations must pay.”
11.Feb.2006 Some intelligence officials in the USA and Israel suspect that the some of the secret documents obtained by Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard eventually reached the Soviet Union, giving Moscow another window into U.S. military strategies. Pollard was arrested for spying in 1985.

China & Nuclear Secrets

Evidence developed in the 1990s indicates, too, that the Reagan-Bush administration suffered damaging spy operations from communist China.

U.S. intelligence officials believe that China gleaned sensitive nuclear secrets from exchange programs with U.S. nuclear scientists in the 1980s, contacts accelerated during the Reagan-Bush years as part of a strategy to isolate the Soviet Union.

Many of the U.S.-Chinese scientific exchanges came after Reagan’s White House solicited a favor from China – the secret supplying of surface-to-air missiles to the Nicaraguan contra rebels in 1984. White House aide Oliver North, who let Chinese authorities in on the secret White House contra-supply operation, said China shipped the missiles, in part, to curry favor with the USA.

U.S. intelligence now believes that between 1986 and 1988, the Chinese used those scientific contacts to steal sensitive U.S. nuclear secrets, including how to make a miniaturized W-88 hydrogen bomb. China successfully tested its own small hydrogen bomb in 1992.

The Washington Post reported that Chinese documents turned over by a Chinese "walk-in agent" showed that during the 1980s, Beijing had gathered a large amount of classified information about U.S. ballistic missiles and reentry vehicles. [WP, Oct. 19, 2000]

Nuclear-capable cruise missiles would not be possible without tritium-boosted warheads. Second, there is the "hydrogen" bomb proper. Tritium is used to provide an initial fusion reaction to boost the yield of the secondary fission explosion, which ignites the second (and main) fusion explosion. The technique of using the first stage to set off the second, or third stage, is the real H-bomb secret. This is known as the "Teller-Ulam Trick," after its inventors, Edward Teller and Stanislav Ulam. The bomb uses only small amounts of tritium and other fissile material. The secondary fusion explosion "breeds" its own tritium from Lithium-6

The CANDU reactor system produces 2400 times as much tritium as the American light water reactor. This is a gigantic problem for Ontario Hydro, the operators of Ontario's commercial nuclear power reactors, because tritium is extremely toxic. As little as one billionth of a gram can cause cancer if inhaled, ingested, or absorbed through the skin. One five-hundredth of a gram is fatal to an average person. Thus, since the early days of nuclear power in Ontario, critics have argued that tritium should be removed from the heavy water in the reactors to reduce the exposure of workers and surrounding communities. Ontario Hydro recently began to build a tritium removal facility when it became apparent that there was a very lucrative market for it. It sells for $15 million per kilogram-more than one thousand times the price of gold!

From Peace Magazine Apr/May 1987, p.14. Author=David H Martin; Title=Tritium Traffic: Deadly Dividends for Nuclear Industry; URL=https://www.peacemagazine.org/archive/v03n2p14.htm Tritium Traffic: Deadly Dividends for Nuclear Industry David H Martin

In February, 1934, the British journal, New Scientist, published an article by Tom Wilkie, "Old Age Can Kill the Bomb." It was an ingenious solution to the arms control nightmare of verification; controlling not only the number of weapons, but the strategic materials that fuel them -- mainly plutonium, enriched uranium and tritium. Wilkie focused on tritium, because it turns into non-radioactive helium at a rate of 5.5 per cent per year. A halt of tritium production would rapidly cripple all nuclear arsenals. Thus, attention was rivetted on Ontario Hydro's plan to produce about 57 kilograms of tritium by 2006. A one megaton thermonuclear warhead (equivalent to one million tons of TN") may contain as little as one gram of tritium.

Antimatter is inexhaustible. For example, antimatter can be acquired from the 9P/Temple 1 comet for less than $1 billion per gram.  And there are hundreds of comets. The economic opportunities of using antimatter energy will come from billions of people being able to live out their dreams to make the world a better place to live.

The military are really interested in antimatter, because it's just loaded with energy. They want to use it for bombs and spaceships.

In WW2, the big bombs were called "block-busters" - because they could destroy a whole city block. These bombs carried roughly 20 tonnes of TNT. Then came the atomic bombs. They were about 1,000 times more destructive - equivalent to about 20,000 tonnes of TNT. The next big "improvement" were the H-bombs. They were 1,000 times more powerful than the atom bombs - about 20,00,000 tonnes of TNT. Antimatter bombs will be about 1,000 times more powerful again.

The USA Astronautics Laboratory at Edwards Air Force Base in California (which is a Space Shuttle landing site) has been pouring money into research into how to use antimatter in spacecraft. The magazine Aviation Week and Space Technology was jokingly called Megadeath Weekly because in each issue, it used to discuss new and unusual ways of killing lots of people. Colonel Ross Nunn, the director of the Astronautics Laboratory, said in Megadeath Weekly "The 'giggle factor' about antimatter is over. Antimatter is real + we know how to make it and keep it."

The military already have half a dozen workable designs for anti-matter rockets, thanks to the American NERVA nuclear rocket program of the 1960s. And the technology has already been designed to bring the production cost down to $10 million per gram of antimatter. This works out to $10 per microgram - so the 50 micrograms needed to get us across the deserts would cost about $500. This technology could make grams of antimatter each year.

But cheap space travel is about half a century away. When it comes, the solar system will no longer be a huge place into which we send out occasional robot spacecraft which take years to get to their destinations. The solar system will be our Big Backyard. Antimatter will give new subject matter for all those 4WD ad-makers sick of rocky creek beds

Sen. Feingold: Deal to extend Patriot Act provisions -- and sell out our civil liberties -- is "unacceptable." Buzzflash agrees. Harry Reid lamely calls it "a step in the right direction." A step in the right direction would be for Harry Reid to resign. This Harry ain't no Harry Truman. (His office stopped sending us their alerts and inviting us in on calls. We can't imagine why.) 2/10

"The confirmation of all the sh** many on the left have been saying about Katrina, about DeLay, about Libby and leaks ought to be another of those massive tipping points. But no one's suprised. In a laughable move to negate any punishment for
Hammer of the House, Tom DeLay managed to finagle his way into two crucial committees, House Appropriations (where he’ll have control of money going to NASA in his district) and oversight of the Justice Department, which is of course investigating Abramoff, who insists via emails that Bush must recall their many meetings + whose investigation now involves the WH since they’re refusing to give up documents. 11.Feb.2006 https://www.cannonfire.blogspot.com/Permalink

https://www.cannonfire.blogspot.com/LEAKGATE - Ok, I hate the –gate thing, too. But there are just too many scandals; one needs shorthand. A couple of nice little plums came in this week on this particular pudding. One, reporter John Dickerson gives us some insight into just how the WH set up the leak; bunch of cagey bastards, they are. And two, Murray Waas points out Cheney's role in the conspiracy.

Doncha just love that the media is using this term and not buckling to the Rovian euphemism of “terrorist surveillance”? Without question, the best in depth coverage of the issues regarding the laws, the actions + especially the administration’s arguments, comes from
Glenn Greenwald. It’s worth the time to read through his unassailable points, as they might be your only comfort in the face of this chilling reality I thought I heard Gonzo alluding to (by avoiding it) in the Senate hearings. At least a couple of FISA judges objected, but we should not be surprised, given the old TIA intentions.

https://www.cannonfire.blogspot.com/What made Iraq possible was 9/11. Cheney's directive from last year, originally posted by Joe as "The Most Important Story of Our Time," was for the Air Force to have a nuke-dropping plan in place as a response to an attack on the US.
I'm of the humble opinion that the more we speculate, the less they can rely on the surprise element.

Let's speculate wildly here; don't hold back. -dr. Elsewhere Permalink
https://www.cannonfire.blogspot.com/IRANEOUS In light of Joe's most recent post + the odd nerve gas scare from last night, it does seem pertinent to consider just what the evil ones are up to - besides no good - and how they might pull it off.

11.Sep.2001-05.Jan. 2005 Ex-FBI agent admits giving out 9/11 data ASSOCIATED PRESS

NEW YORK – A former FBI agent admitted that he gave online stock traders confidential details of federal investigations, including a probe of the Sept. 11 terror attacks.

One of the recipients was San Diego stock speculator Anthony Elgindy. A Justice Department task force had begun the investigation of Elgindy to determine whether anyone might have known of the terrorists' plans and profited by selling vulnerable stocks just before the attacks, Jeffrey Royer said.

Elgindy was not charged in connection with that probe, but an investigation into the ties between Elgindy and Royer led to charges against the two men of racketeering, securities fraud and other crimes. The two are on trial together in federal court in Brooklyn.

Taking the stand Monday in his defense, Royer acknowledged he had revealed the existence of FBI and SEC investigations, executives' criminal records and other sensitive information to Elgindy and associate Derrick Cleveland.

He said the apparent violations were justified because Elgindy and Cleveland were stock-market experts who helped him develop evidence of financial wrongdoing.

Prosecutors say the relationship was criminal. Elgindy was accused of paying Royer for the information and using it to manipulate stock prices and extort companies that were the subjects of investigations.

When pressed by Assistant U.S. Attorney Seth Levine about apparent violations of FBI rules, Royer grew testy, asserting he was an independent-minded agent who had the right to decide what information to reveal.

"It's real easy for you to armchair quarterback when you don't have anything to do with the case," Royer told Levine. "Pursuant to a law-enforcement purpose, I can do anything I want with the files."

Cleveland has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit securities fraud and testified against Elgindy and Royer.
