Die Aussicht, die effiziente Kraft-Wärme-Kopplung in Wohnhäusern zu etablieren, versetzt die Branche in Gründerstimmung. In Industrie- oder Gewerbebetrieben kommen Blockheizkraftwerke (BHKW) seit vielen Jahren zum Einsatz. Nun hoffen die Hersteller auf den Einzug ins private Eigenheim. Sieben Produkte, die diesen Massenmarkt öffnen sollen, listet der Bundesverband Kraft-Wärme-Kopplung in seiner jüngsten Übersicht. Gut die Hälfte der Geräte kann man bereits kaufen, der Rest soll in den nächsten zwei Jahren auf den Markt kommen.
Anders als Großkraftwerke, die durchschnittlich zwei Drittel der Primärenergie als Abwärme an die Umwelt verlieren, vereinen BHKW Heizkessel und Stromgenerator direkt beim Verbraucher und steigern den Wirkungsgrad auf über 90 Prozent. Etwa drei Viertel der gewonnenen Energie stellt ein BHKW thermisch für die Heizung oder das Warmwasser bereit, den Rest als elektrischen Strom. Für Einfamilienhäuser gilt eine elektrische Leistung von fünf Kilowatt als ausreichend. Und viele so genannte "Mikro-BHKW" sind nicht größer als ein Kühlschrank.
Die Hersteller arbeiten an unterschiedlichen technologischen Konzepten. Diesel- und Ottomotoren sind als Erzeuger für Strom und Wärme schon seit langem im Einsatz. Doch geschlossene Motorenkonzepte, bei denen die Verbrennung nicht im Kolbenraum, sondern außerhalb stattfindet, sind für solche Anlagen besonders geeignet.
Etwa der Stirling-Motor, der 1816 von dem Schotten Robert Stirling erfunden wurde. Über einen Wärmetauscher wird das Gas im Kolbenraum erwärmt, sodass es sich ausdehnt und einen Kolben bewegt, der wiederum einen Generator antreibt. Sobald das Gas abkühlt, pendelt der Kolben zurück. Dann beginnt der Kreisprozess von vorn. Obwohl der Stirling-Motor sehr verschleißfrei arbeitet, konnte er sich gegen die Konkurrenz lange Zeit nicht durchsetzen. Denn dort, wo die Abwärme der Motoren ungenutzt bleibt, beispielsweise bei Kraftfahrzeugen, sind Stirling-Aggregate zu teuer.

Der Zuwachs von rund 237 Milliarden Euro resultiert zum Großteil aus der Neubewertung des bisher vollkommen unterschätzten Dienstleistungssektors. Dieser tertiäre Sektor hat nach den neuen Zahlen nun einen Anteil an der Wirtschaftsleistung von 40,7 Prozent. Bislang war das Amt von 31,9 Prozent ausgegangen. Der sekundäre Sektor, zu dem etwa Industrie, Produktion und Bergbau gehören, macht nun 46,2 nach bislang geschätzten 52,9 Prozent aus. Für den primären Sektor - Land- und Forstwirtschaft sowie Fischerei - ergibt sich ein Prozentsatz von 13,1 nach bislang genannten 15,2 Prozent.
Volkswirte gehen auf Grund der aktualisierten Basis davon aus, dass China im Jahr 2005 nun das Land mit der vierthöchsten Wirtschaftsleistung weltweit sein könnte und Frankreich sowie Großbritannien hinter sich lassen wird. Eine höhere Wirtschaftsleistung würden dann nur noch die USA, Japan und Deutschland haben.

Caracas - "Wir haben auf nationaler und regionaler Ebene einen Ausnahmezustand", berichtete Zivilschutz-Leiter Antonio Rivero. Es sei ein Lkw gestohlen worden, der eine Kapsel mit hoch radioaktivem Material an Bord gehabt habe. Derzeit werde landesweit nach der Kapsel gesucht.
Ein leitender Mitarbeiter des Energieministeriums rief im Fernsehen die Diebe zur Rückgabe des gefährlichen Diebesguts auf. Von der Kapsel gehe eine potentiell tödliche Gefahr aus, erklärte er. Die Bevölkerung wurde aufgerufen, die Behörden zu informieren, falls jemand das radioaktive Material finde. Er wollte nicht ausschließen, dass es die Diebe lediglich auf den Lkw als Beute abgesehen hatten.
Die Kapsel enthält den Angaben zufolge Iridium-192 mit einer starken Gamma-Strahlung. Es ist ein Metall von hoher Dichte und hat eine Halbwertszeit von knapp 74 Tagen, während der es zu Osmium-192 und Platin-192 zerfällt und dabei radioaktive Beta- und Gammastrahlung freisetzt. Iridium-192 wird in der Industrie zur Prüfung von Metallen und in der Krebsmedizin für Bestrahlungen eingesetzt. Das silbrig-weiße Metall kommt meist in der Form von massiven Stäben oder Kügelchen vor.

Die Forscher verglichen 167 Gene von Menschen, Schimpansen, Makaken und Mäusen miteinander. Bei solchen Untersuchungen gilt: Je mehr Unterschiede ein bestimmter DNA-Abschnitt bei verwandten Arten aufweist, desto mehr Zeit ist seit ihren gemeinsamen Vorfahren vergangen.
Diese relative Zeitabschätzung muss dann mit Hilfe bereits bekannter Daten der Evolution verglichen werden. Kumar und seine Kollegen verwendeten dafür den Zeitpunkt, an dem sich die Affen der Alten Welt wie Paviane und Makaken vom jenem Stammbaum abgespalten hatten, der letztendlich zu Schimpansen und Menschen führte. Nach Untersuchungen an Fossilien hatte diese Abspaltung vor 24 bis 35 Millionen Jahren stattgefunden. Die genetischen Abweichungen, zu denen es seitdem gekommen ist, sind nach Angaben der Forscher etwa fünf Mal so groß wie die Unterschiede zwischen Schimpanse und Mensch. Demnach müssten sich deren Ahnen vor fünf bis sieben Millionen Jahren evolutionär getrennt haben.

Finally, this 07.Jan.2005 story in the Deseret News includes confirmation that Hassoun was engaged in an undefined intelligence operation: Questions of Hassoun's involvement in intelligence were raised last month when Marine officials disclosed that Hassoun, whose main duty was to drive trucks, was called to help in undercover intelligence operations in Iraq. However, Wims said the fact that Hassoun was not charged with divulging classified information may indicate that Hassoun's role in that operation was minimal. If Hassoun was a threat to military security, he would have been treated differently, Wims said. The writer of this article did not consider the possibility that the kidnapping was the "undercover intelligence operation."
If... if we credit the theory that Hassoun participated in a fake kidnapping arranged by American operatives, we can only guess at the purpose. Those who surmise along these lines will presume that the operation was blown + that Houssan was allowed to disappear. Permalink

Wikipedia tells the follow-up story as well as anyone: A preliminary result of the United States Navy into the activities of Wassef Ali Hassoun concluded that he deserted the United States Marine Corps on June 21, 2004. The investigation is ongoing [1]. In mid-July, he publicly denied desertion
On December 9, 2004, The Pentagon announced that Hassoun would be charged with desertion, larceny and wrongful disposition of military property in connection with his service-issued 9 mm handgun that disappeared with him and never turned up. If convicted, he could receive a dishonorable discharge, forfeiture of pay + from five to ten years incarceration on each specification.
In a further twist, on January 4, 2005 he was again labelled a deserter after failing to return to his base in North Carolina from authorised leave. He is reportedly in Canada or Lebanon.

Who kidnapped the Christian Peacekeepers? (Updated) Four members of a non-missionary Christian peace group -- opponents of Mr. Bush's war -- were kidnapped more than three weeks ago in Iraq by a group no-one had heard of before called the Swords of Righteousness Brigade. The brigade has called the Peacemakers "spies," even though the group is known for its aid work -- and for helping Seymour Hersh uncover the Abu Ghraib scandal. The group has also denounced George Bush's most recent speech.
Muslims around the world, including many with strong anti-U.S. feelings, have called for the release of these prisoners, who have provided a consistent anti-war voice.
Privately, a few have wondered: Who are the kidnappers? Why would they target a group which has taken great risks to antagonize the Bush forces?
Are we dealing with what British General Frank Kitson once called a "pseudo-gang"?
No-one doubts, these days, that the CIA + other American agencies are perfectly willing to perform kidnappings of both Americans + non-Americans. But is there precedent for the presence of a kidnap-crazed "pseudo-gang" in Iraq?
Many will recall the example of Nick Berg, whose grisly behading video seemed unconvincing to many. I took the evidence of murder at face value, but I still wonder why Berg wore an orange jumpsuit similar to the those seen in the Abu Ghraib photos + why the surrounding details (the floor, the walls, the chair) matched interior shots of that prison. In my eyes, the murder of Nick Berg remains mysterious. (Many details of his life were also puzzling, but we must go into those enigmas at another time.)

As Legal times noted in September of this year, "During the confirmation hearings of John Bolton as the U.S. representative to the United Nations, it came to light that the NSA had freely revealed intercepted conversations of U.S. citizens to Bolton while he served at the State Department. . . . More generally, Newsweek reports that from January 2004 to May 2005, the NSA supplied intercepts and names of 10,000 U.S. citizens to policy-makers at many departments, other U.S. intelligence services + law enforcement agencies." We still don't know who he was looking at and what information was contained in those intercepts. More importantly, were they legally obtained? In light of the latest revelation, we have another possible explanation why the Bush Administration fought so strenuously to keep those intercepts secret and out of the hearing. Today’s Times blockbuster that 00.000.2002 Bush signed a secret executive order to allow the NSA to spy on American citizens without a court order couldn’t have come at a worse time for the White House. The Senate just happened to be voting today on whether or not to renew parts of the USA Patriot Act set to expire. The nays had it, in a striking blow to the administration.
The timing of the story is raising eyebrows. The Times noted the administration told them to not print the story + the paper apparently capitulated, holding the report for a year. The paper claims it wanted to do “additional reporting.” The editors have refused to allow the authors, James Risen + Eric Lichtblau, to talk to the press.

Several newspaper articles, editorials and published commentaries have raised questions about the process in which Diebold's certification was obtained. Further questions have been raised relative to State Board of Elections Commission Chairman Larry Leake's relationship with a Diebold lobbyist. And, as you know, the State Board of Elections is being sued for alleged statutory violations in their certification of Diebold as a provider of electronic voting machines.

The New York Times published an Op-Ed questioning Diebold. This column is a victory of sorts, although I, for one, feel that skepticism should have been voiced much earlier. Still, let us be grateful for these three paragraphs:
Diebold's voting machines have a troubled history. The company was accused of installing improperly certified software, which is illegal, in a 2002 governor's race in Georgia. Across the country, it reached a multimillion-dollar settlement with the California attorney general last year of a lawsuit alleging that it made false claims about the security of its machines. Last week, the top elections officer in Leon County, Fla., which includes Tallahassee, concluded after a test that Diebold machines can be hacked to change vote totals.
Diebold has always insisted that its electronic voting machines are so reliable that there is no need for paper records of votes that can be independently verified. Fortunately, the American people feel otherwise. Nearly half the states - including large ones like California, New York, Illinois and Ohio - now require so-called paper trails.
Paper trails are important, but they are no substitute for voting machine manufacturers of unquestioned integrity. As Diebold enters the post-O'Dell era, it should work to make itself worthy of the important role it now plays in American democracy. All very well and good. The allegations of vote fraud strike me as a foretaste of a looming civil war. Sunni participation in the election does not mean that the insurgency has ended + one can only imagine how Sunnis will chafe under a regime friendly to Tehran. Osama bin Laden is a Saudi, as is also Prince Abdullah, a major financial supporter of Muslim terrorists. Coincidentally, Yamasaki also designed the American Concrete Institute building in Detroit. His opinion sounds to me like what the architects of the Tower of Babel probably said. The cleanup of the WTC site was conducted by Controlled Demolition, Inc. of Baltimore, headed by Mark Loizeaux (Bollyn, 2001). Coincidentally they handled the Oklahoma City Murrah building as well. This action prevented investigators from determining what really brought that building down. In February 2000, a federal grand jury indicted Mr. Loizeaux, Douglas Loizeaux + CDI for allegedly falsely reporting campaign contributions. They were acquitted in September 2000. As discussed above in detail, Dr. Thomas Eagar of MIT was apparently called upon to disperse disinformation regarding the WTC collapse. MIT is one of the best research groups for the Committee of 300 (Coleman, 1996). They received the Club of Rome's first "global planning contract." They regurgitated the typical Malthusian doctrine of not enough resources to go around, too many people, etc. One of MIT's professors was Walt Ristow, who became an advisor to Presidents Kennedy and Johnson. Most of its immense wealth arose out of the opium trade with China. This group is responsible for the phony drug wars here in the U.S. These phony drug wars were to get us to give away our constitutional rights. Asset forfeiture is a prime example, where huge assets can be seized without trail and no proof of guilt needed. Also the Committee of 300 long ago decreed that there shall be a smaller-much smaller-and better world, that is, their idea of what constitutes a better world. The myriads of useless eaters consuming scarce natural resources were to be culled. Industrial progress supports population growth. Therefore the command to multiply and subdue the earth found in Genesis had to be subverted. This called for an attack upon Christianity; the slow but sure disintegration of industrial nation states; the destruction of hundreds of millions of people, referred to by the Committee of 300 as "surplus population, " and the removal of any leader who dared to stand in the way of the Committee's global planning to reach the foregoing objectives. Not that the U.S. government didn't know, but as it was part of the conspiracy, it helped to keep the lid on information rather than let the truth be known. Queen, Elizabeth II, is the head of the Committee of 300. The Committee of 300 looks to social convulsions on a global scale, followed by depressions, as a softening-up technique for bigger things to come, as its principal method of creating masses of people all over the world who will become its "welfare" recipients of the future. The committee appears to base much of its important decisions affecting mankind on the philosophy of Polish aristocrat, Felix Dzerzinski, who regarded mankind as being slightly above the level of cattle. As a close friend of British intelligence agent Sydney Reilly (Reilly was actually Dzerzinski's controller during the Bolshevik Revolution's formative years), he often confided in Reilly during his drinking bouts. Dzerzinski was, of course, the beast who ran the Red Terror apparatus. He once told Reilly, while the two were on a drinking binge, that "Man is of no importance. Look at what happens when you starve him. He begins to eat his dead companions to stay alive. Man is only interested in his own survival. That is all that counts.
