28.Aug.2004 In a joint order signed today by the interior minister + transport minister, the transport ministry has handed over the charge of airport security to the interior ministry. https://www.thestatesman.net/page.news.php?clid=8&theme=&usrsess=1&id=52511
28.Aug.2004 MOSCOW- Experts probing the twin air crash in Russia have found traces of explosives on the wreckage of the second plane also, proving that both the airliners went down as a result of terror attacks, the country’s main anti-terror agency FSB security service said today.
“The additional analysis of the fragments of Tu-134 plane that crashed in Tula region has resulted in discovery of traces of hexogen,” FSB spokesman Sergei Ignatchenko was quoted as saying by ITAR-TASS.
On Friday, Ignatchenko had announced that traces of highly explosive hexogen were found on the wreckage of Sibir Airlines’ Tupolev Tu-154 jet that crashed in Rostov region while on Moscow-Sochi flight. Both planes had taken off late Tuesday night from Moscow’s Domodedovo airport and disappeared from radar screens with a gap of a minute.

The crashes killed 90 people on board including at least two suspected female suicide bombers.
The authorities have declared that bodies of one S Jibirkhanova, a resident of Chechnya travelling on Sibir airlines’ Moscow-Sochi flight +

28.Aug.2004 Of an impeachment in the silly season - The Times, London LONDON- What happens when an obscure nationalist, two animated academics +

the editor of a right-wing journal with a flair for publicity combine forces in the dog days of a soggy August?
To the more excitable, if gullible, observers of politics, the answer is an ingenious mechanism to hold Mr Tony Blair to account for “high crimes + misdemeanours” for invading Iraq + even to remove him from office.
Most people, however, would probably conclude that the outcome is, instead, probably the silliest story to emerge over the summer:

the plan to impeach Mr Tony Blair.
Is the Prime Minister really likely to be arrested and hauled before Black Rod in the Lords (albeit with the chance of being freed on bail) as a prelude to an impeachment trial staged somberly by the Commons with the Lords sitting in judgment?
One would think not.
Indeed, would the valiant, if eccentric, band of 13 MPs who have so far joined the campaign to impeach Mr Blair really be able to surmount a Government majority of 159 to persuade the Commons to support an impeachment motion?
Far-fetched, one might conclude.
Moreover, would Mr Michael Martin, the Speaker, even allow such a motion to be moved, given that, as recently as 1999, a Select Committee on Parliamentary Privilege concluded that the power of impeachment “may be considered obsolete”?
Surely not.
Formidable as they may be, these obstacles have not prevented the impeachment campaign from gaining considerable media attention.
It began this year when Mr Adam Price, the Plaid Cymru MP behind the idea, hunched over his laptop computer at home.

He tapped in the words “impeach” and “Blair” on Google. Up popped two results. One was a Guardian article by Dan Plesch, an honorary fellow of Birkbeck College and the author of controversial claims last year that Mr Jack Straw and Mr Colin Powell expressed private doubts about whether Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction before going to war.
The other was a paper on impeachment commissioned from the Commons library last year by Mr Peter Kilfyole, a Labour MP and opponent of the Iraq war, who had taken it no further.
These gave Mr Price, a tenacious man, the information he wanted. The power of impeachment, although not used in England for 150 years, considered obsolete and recommended for removal, remained in place. To an optimist, that made impeachment “alive and well”. The MP commissioned a lengthy analysis of the impeachment process from Mr Plesch. He requested a second, accusing Mr Blair of misleading Parliament to make the case for war, from Dr Glen Rangwala, a lecturer international politics at Newnham College, Cambridge + critic of the war through the columns of the Independent on Sunday. Together, these formed the basis of a 99-page report on the case for impeaching the Prime Minister. Then came the masterstroke from Mr Price.

28.Apr.1945 04-10 p.m. Benito Mussolini was murdered by a two-man team led by a British secret agent acting on the orders of Winston Churchill, according to a new investigation.
In the official version, the Italian dictator + his final mistress, Clara Petacci, were shot by Italian partisans led by Walter Audisio — codenamed “Colonel Valerio” — at the gates of Villa Belmonte at Mezzegra near Lake Como

Their bodies were then hung upside down in Milan.
But it is now suggested that this was cover-up, + that Mussolini and Petacci were really killed at

28.Apr.1945 11 a.m. that day by Bruno Lonati, an Italian partisan codenamed “Giacomo” + “Captain John”, a British Special Operations Executive agent of Sicilian parentage whose name was Robert Maccarrone.
An Italian state television documentary — Mussolini: The Final Truth — claims that Mussolini was carrying compromising letters from Churchill written over a period of years involving a deal under which Italy would make a separate peace with the Allies, a breach of Churchill’s agreement with President Roosevelt at Casablanca to seek the “unconditional surrender” of the Axis powers.

27.Aug.2004 Bush Flip-Flops Again-So Mr. Bush FINALLY
admitted yesterday to the New York Times for the very first time that "miscalculations" were made concerning our handling of the Iraq situation after the official war

This seems to be a flip-flop from a previous statement he made at his last formal news conference.

When asked if he could name any mistakes he had made, he stood, staring blankly for several seconds,

then said he couldn't think of any mistakes his administration had made.

Hmmm....

Mr. Bush also insisted that the 17 month insurgency was the unintended by-product of a "swift victory."

Bush last statement raises a couple of questions.

What gave the president the idea that the U.S. would get mired down in a protracted military offensive, when Bush father's Gulf War lasted only 48 days?

We had, at that time decimated Saddam Hussein's army + negated his ability to become a real threat to the USA.

By all accounts his military capabilities, as we headed to war against him 00.000.2003 were not nearly as great.

So again I ask what made Bush think his offensive would take longer?

As it turned out, Bush 43"s military offensive lasted a mere 42 days.

It should not have come as a surprise to him Bush.

But a more important question comes to mind.

Why was there no strategy to secure the peace + quickly stabilize Iraq, once the official war was over?

It is the job of Bush the commander-in-chief to ask important questions, then make important decisions BEFORE war is waged.

It was Bush job to review battle plans, then accept or reject them, before a single fighter plane was launched or a single soldier was set forth on the ground.

It was also Bush job to demand from his advisors + military planners a workable post-war plan.

No such plan ever existed.

This gross negligence has led us to a 17 month long occupation which has cost nearly a thousand American soldiers lives. Such lack of foresight is inexcusable and unforgivable.

For the president to say that he could not have forseen a "swift victory" against a Hussein army which was weaker than the one his father waged war on is disingenuous, to say the least.

Such an admission only proves his unworthiness as the leader of the free world.
