05.Dec.2004 Apart from the student movement and the united opposition, the other key element in the democracy template is what is known as the "parallel vote tabulation", a counter to the election-rigging tricks beloved of disreputable regimes. There are professional outside election monitors from bodies such as the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe, but the Ukrainian poll, like its predecessors, also featured thousands of local election monitors trained and paid by western groups. Freedom House and the Democratic party's NDI helped fund and organise the "largest civil regional election monitoring effort" in Ukraine, involving more than 1,000 trained observers. They also organised exit polls. On Sunday night those polls gave Mr Yushchenko an 11-point lead and set the agenda for much of what has followed. The exit polls are seen as critical because they seize the initiative in the propaganda battle with the regime, invariably appearing first, receiving wide media coverage and putting the onus on the authorities to respond. The final stage in the US template concerns how to react when the incumbent tries to steal a lost election. In Belarus, President Lukashenko won, so the response was minimal. In Belgrade, Tbilisi + now Kiev, where the authorities initially tried to cling to power, the advice was to stay cool but determined and to organise mass displays of civil disobedience, which must remain peaceful but risk provoking the regime into violent suppression. If the events in Kiev vindicate the US in its strategies for helping other people win elections and take power from anti-democratic regimes, it is certain to try to repeat the exercise elsewhere in the post-Soviet world. 05.Dec.2004 The events of 9/11 showed this nearly perfectly, uncovering the typical CIA modus operandi. 1) Actively investing money in extremist, terrorist and revolutionary groups, giving them extra warfare education + igniting their original dismay with extremely fundamentalist feelings - which are evidently receiving spectacular media-attention. 2) Organize a violent strike on military and diplomatic posts abroad + eventually on American territory, with or without the aid of mercenary and covert factions. 3) Thirdly, tie the violence to the foreign fundamentalist groups that were funded and controlled by the CIA in the first place. This is orchestrated and coordinated daily in friendly media, by feeding it a well funded, cleverly shaped and extremely secretive amount of lies and misinformation. Control the executive directors of the media + this should not be too difficult. The long-term aim of 9/11 is to embark the world into a war on terrorism. But who are the terrorists? Any bloody attack is now mediatically being profiled as connected to Islamic terrorism, while the arrests are always unsubstantiated ( * & * ), links to a real terrorist organization are never proven in court, and accused are always released ( * ). From Tchetchenya over Saudi-Arabia to Madrid spans one big net of CIA-induced terrorism and consequent media lies, following the same recipe as 9/11 and all other historic CIA interventions. Even American 'enemies' can now discover "anti-American" terrorist cells, see France and Russia ( * ). In Iraq, 'suicide terrorists' came along with the American invasion + are targeting the UN's, Iran's, Europe's and Japan's representatives and troops on a daily basis, accompanied by the classic Black Hawks down and killed foot soldiers. 05.Dec.2004 According to former CIA-agents, since the communist arch-enemy disappeared, intelligence has largely made way for propaganda and staged terrorism. The CIA didn't know the U.S.S.R. was going to abandon communism, they were even unaware of India's nuclear weapons development. 05.Dec.2004 I was particularly risky for a combination of profiles: first, my web site had some notoriety; add to this that I was a Green party member and an official election witness; and third, Belgium is a small but strategically essential country in the eyes of the Bush strategy. If the dam of the Belgian clandestine election fraud would have been breached (as it could have been if the Green party had challenged the result), a precedent would have been shaped to scrutinize following electoral irregularities in other EU and non-EU countries, where the USA attempts similar operations. The following year, in 2004 elections for the Flemish region only, Agalev miraculously went back to almost 8% of Flemish votes (7,6%). Apparently, this is because their voting percentage, this time, was not tampered with. Not that these regional elections weren't pushing the right wing as well: nearly one in four Flemish voters supposedly voted for the ultra right wing and separatist party Vlaams Blok (just about 25% of votes + the Walloon fascist party Front National came back into the political spectrum out of nowhere... There is some civil protest going on in Belgium against the voting system. Organizations like PourEva collect skeptical voter testimonies and set up election awareness campaigns. Many citizens are critical of the voting process. But most of them don't believe in conspiracies. The Belgian electorate is certainly not open to the possibility of foreign intelligence services having the power to steer their democracy. They must understand that by complicity of the Belgian Staatsveiligheid/Sureté d'Etat, the CIA has all the means + evidently the motive, to install right-wing governments, as they do across the world - governments which they can then control. The ideology and the apparatus that lie behind this are the same as during pre-clintonian Bush/Reagan administrations (1981-1993). The CIA, with the help of the Belgian State Security, had organized state terror, in the form of so-called communist bombings by the terrorist CCC + in the form of senseless super market killings by the Bende van Nijvel. This was done in order to push the Belgian government to accept USA nuclear missiles on Belgian territory (completely against public opinion), in order to further strengthen the grip of the State Security on domestic affairs,+ in order to shift the public opinion towards the right. This strategy, known as the Strategy of Tension, is now replaced by a strategy of vote fraud. It is only by acknowledging the Bush government's burning ambition to steer every nation on the globe towards puppet regimes, that you can see a USA-led coup d'état unfold in Belgium. It is only when you understand how the CIA is a giant international network of like-minded agents + politicians, controlled from within domestic security services, with their hundreds of agents + virtually unlimited bribing resources, that you can see how this could have happened in Belgium. Yes, big covert operations can be successful, yes, enough recruits can be gathered and trained to perform them. Secrecy prevails. Covert and clandestine operations attempt to drive politics in foreign states, + the 18.May 2003 election day was a remarkable success at that. History teaches us that these large scale clandestine operations do occur + that they can proceed without discovery, most of the time. 05.Dec.2004 Ohio results certified. Well, at least Ken Blackwell didn't drag his count out until 06.Dec2004. He has finished toting up the Ohio vote + as predicted, Bush's margin of victory has shrunk, from 136,000 votes to 119,000 votes. Provisional ballots broke heavily for Kerry -- and apparently he did not fare as poorly as some might have expected vis-a-vis the overseas absentee ballots, which would include the military vote.

05.Dec.2004 Dead voters society By now, you probably have seen the hard-hitting story in the Chicago Tribune (eat that , Richard Roeper!) regarding the many corpses registered to vote and other oddities of the 2004 election:
More than 181,000 dead people were listed on the rolls in the six swing states, despite efforts to clean up the country's voting system after the 2000 election.
Thousands more voters were registered to vote in two places, which could have allowed them to cast more than one ballot.
Further, more than 90,000 voters in Ohio cast ballots without a valid presidential choice. Either they decided not to choose a candidate, the machine failed to register their choice, or they mistakenly voted for more than one candidate.
And the FBI is investigating allegations that Republicans in Florida mounted a large-scale campaign to tamper with ballots. Trouble is, only the final paragraph here truly favors our side. The "dead voters society" meme matches a Republican propaganda campaign that began well before November 2.
This is the time when we should expect the usual counterstrike.

Although Inslaw was contracted to provide only the public domain PROMIS, the DOJ demanded that Inslaw turn over the enhanced version of PROMIS in case the company could not complete its contractual obligations. Inslaw agreed to this contract modification, but on two conditions: that the DOJ recognize Inslaw's proprietary rights to enhanced PROMIS, and that the DOJ not distribute enhanced PROMIS beyond the boundaries of the contract (the 94 US Attorney's offices.) The DOJ agreed to these conditions, but requested Inslaw prove it had indeed created enhanced PROMIS with private funds. Inslaw said it would + the enhanced software was given to the DOJ. Once the DOJ had control of PROMIS, it dogmatically refused to verify that Inslaw had created the enhancements, essentially rendering the contract modification useless. When Inslaw protested, the DOJ began to withhold payments. Two years later, Inslaw was forced into bankruptcy. As the contract problems with DOJ emerged, Hamilton received a phone call from Dominic Laiti, chief executive of Hadron. Laiti wanted to buy Inslaw. Hamilton refused to sell. According to Hamilton's statements in court documents, Laiti then warned him that Hadron had friends in the government and if Inslaw didn't sell willingly, it would be forced to sell. 04.Dec.2004 The Dispute Grows On a gorgeous spring morning in 1981, Lawrence McWhorter, director of the Executive Office for US Attorneys, put his feet on his desk, lit an Italian cigar, eyed his subordinate Frank Mallgrave and said through a haze of blue smoke: We're out to get Inslaw. McWhorter had just asked Mallgrave to oversee the pilot installation of PROMIS, a job Mallgrave refused, unaware at the time that he was being asked to participate in Inslaw's deliberate destruction. We were just in his office for what I call a B.S. type discussion, Mallgrave told Wired. I remember it was a bright sunny morning.... (McWhorter) asked me if I would be interested in assuming the position of Assistant Director for Data Processing...basically working with Inslaw. I told him...I just had no interest in that job. And then, almost as an afterthought, he said We're out to get Inslaw. I remember it to this day. After Mallgrave refused the job, McWhorter gave it to C. Madison "Brick" Brewer. Brewer at one time worked for Inslaw, but was allowed to resign when Hamilton found his performance inadequate, according to court documents. Brewer was then hired into the Department of Justice specifically to oversee the contract of his former employer. (The DOJ's Office of Professional Responsibility ruled there was no conflict of interest.) He would later tell a federal court that everything he did regarding Inslaw was approved by Deputy Attorney General Lowell Jensen, the same man who once supervised DALITE, the product which lost a major contract to Inslaw in the 1970s. Brewer, who now refuses to comment on the Inslaw case, was aided in his new DOJ job by Peter Videnieks. Videnieks was fresh from the Customs Service, where he oversaw contracts between that agency and Hadron, Inc., a company controlled by Meese and Reagan-crony Earl Brian. You can rotate the file by case, defendant, arresting officer, judge, defense lawyer + it's tracking all the names of all the people in all the cases. What this means is that PROMIS can provide a complete rundown of all federal cases in which a lawyer has been involved, or all the cases in which a lawyer has represented defendant A, or all the cases in which a lawyer has represented white-collar criminals, at which stage in each of the cases the lawyer agreed to a plea bargain + so on. Based on this information, PROMIS can help a prosecutor determine when a plea will be taken in a particular type of case. But the real power of PROMIS, according to Hamilton, is that with a staggering 570,000 lines of computer code, PROMIS can integrate innumerable databases without requiring any reprogramming. In essence, PROMIS can turn blind data into information. And anyone in government will tell you that information, when wielded with finesse, begets power. Converted to use by intelligence agencies, as has been alleged in interviews by ex-CIA and Israeli Mossad agents, PROMIS can be a powerful tracking device capable of monitoring intelligence operations, agents and targets, instead of legal cases. At the time of its inception, PROMIS was the most powerful program of its type. But a similar program, DALITE, was developed under another LEAA grant by D. Lowell Jensen, the Alameda County (Calif.) District Attorney. In the mid-1970s, the two programs vied for a lucrative Los Angeles County contract and Inslaw won out. One journalist, Danny Casolaro, died as he attempted to tell the story (see side bar) + boxes of documents relating to the case have been destroyed, stolen, or conveniently lost by the Department of Justice. But so far, not a single person has been held accountable. Wired has spent two years searching for the answers to the questions Inslaw poses: Why would Justice steal PROMIS? Did it then cover up the theft? Did it let associates of government officials sell PROMIS to foreign governments, which then used the software to track political dissidents instead of legal cases? (Israel has reportedly used PROMIS to track troublesome Palestinians.) The implications continue: that Meese profited from the sales of the stolen property. That Brian, Meese's business associate, may have been involved in the October Surprise (the oft-debunked but persistent theory that the Reagan campaign conspired to insure that US hostages in Iran were held until after Reagan won the 1980 election, see side bar). That some of the moneys derived from the illegal sales of PROMIS furthered covert and illegal government programs in Nicaragua. That Oliver used PROMIS as a population tracking instrument for his White House-based domestic emergency management program. Each new set of allegations leads to a new set of possibilities, which makes the story still more difficult to comprehend. But one truth is obvious: What the Inslaw case presents, in its broadest possible implications, is a painfully clear snapshot of how the Justice Department operated during the Reagan-Bush years. This is the case that won't go away, the case that shows how justice and public service gave way to profit and political expediency, how those within the administration's circle of privilege were allowed to violate private property and civil rights for their own profit. Sound like a conspiracy theorist's dream? Absolutely. But the fact is, it's true. The Background : Imagine you are in charge of the legal arm of the most powerful government on the face of the globe, but your internal information systems are mired in the archaic technology of the 1960 s. There's a Department of Justice database + a CIA database + an Attorney's General database, an IRS database, + so on, but none of them can share information. That makes tracking multiple offenders pretty darn difficult + building cases against them a long + bureaucratic task. Along comes a computer program that can integrate all these databases+ it turns out its development was originally funded by the government under a Law Enforcement Assistance Administration grant in the 1970 s. When presented with this edict, Bob Dylan refused, fully prepared to engage in yet another fight with the giant, wholesome label. 04.Dec.2004 As you are well aware, many questions have been raised regarding the discrepancy between the early exit polls conducted by the National Election Pool and the final result of the election. Specifically, just after noon on November 2, numbers were reportedly released showing that Senator Kerry [KFJJ966] was leading in several key states such as Florida and Ohio by a three percentage point lead late in the day. As we now know, these numbers are at odds with official results.
This discrepancy is objectively problematic and raises serious concerns about voting irregularity. While resonable minds can differ as to the latter theory, the only way to restore complete legitimacy on this election is to have an independent firm conduct a detailed analysis of the data, including the raw data taken at the polls early in the day.
Indeed, exit poll data is now being used by Administration officials to evaluate the legitimacy of the election in the Ukraine. As Secretary of State Colin Powell stated, "We cannot accept this result as legitmate because it does not meet international standards and because there has not been an investigation of the numerous and credible reports of fraud and abuse." Powell recently called for "a full review of the conduct of the election" and tallying of results. Such an inquiry into the legitimacy of election results should be a priority for our country as well.

Those of you who feel burned by Fisher and Madsen may be rolling your eyes at this point. But the basic story is worth reading, as is the supporting documentation. The author gets on my good side by calling for an economic boycott -- an idea I proposed before the election.

Exit polls: Democratic Underground has an interesting discussion of the statistical likelihood of the exit/actual disparity in 16 states. Many a large number is referenced. But the comment I can't help repeating is this one: "That Bush won by chance alone is still about as likely as Dennis Miller becoming funny again any time this century."

04.Dez.2004 Hearings: The House Judiciary Committee will hold hearings on what mainstream reporters are pleased to call voting "irregularities." The Committee's letter to Ken Blackwell makes for interesting reading.
What to expect: A few nuggets of good information sprinkled amidst acres of Republican pomposity, misdirection and molehills made mountainous. We will hear much about the alleged inaccuracy of exit polling and very little about the pattern of error. Mitofsky will testify, and his alleged "raw data" will prove convenient to the conservatives. The mainstream media will report his words as a wise and noble corrective to the irresponsible blatherings of bloggers such as yours truly. Of course, nearly every one of the many opinion pieces parroting this argument will contain an oh-so-clever reference to tin foil hats -- gosh, that one never gets old.
Will there be any real action on this issue? Of course not, since the Democrats hold so little power and the G.O.P. is the Borg. Permissible discussion will be limited to the concept of accidental problems. Any witness who insists that the Republicans made a concerted effort to depress the Democratic vote will receive the sort of "buzzsaw" treatment accorded Anita Hill.

EPA Tests Find Rocket Fuel in Nation's Milk, Lettuce 03.Dec.2004 this week USA Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) tests released have confirmed the presence of perchlorate - an explosive additive in solid rocket fuel - in almost every sample of lettuce + milk taken in a USA nationwide investigation.
Perchlorate, leaking from military bases and defense contrator's facilities, is known to cause regional water pollution, resulting in serious health effects. The FDA investigation found the toxic additive in 217 of 232 samples of lettuce + milk from 15 USA states, including areas not previously known for perchlorate contamination. According to USA Environmental Protection Agency's perchlorate coordinator for USA southwest + USA Pacific region, Kevin Mayer, the FDA results show that this regional pollution problem is now exposing people across the entire USA to the toxin. The situation in Falloojeh is worse than anyone can possibly describe. It has turned into one of those cities you see in your darkest nightmares- broken streets strewn with corpses, crumbling houses and fallen mosques... The worst part is that for the last couple of weeks we've been hearing about the use of chemical weapons inside Falloojeh by the Americans. Today we heard that the delegation from the Iraqi Ministry of Health isn't being allowed into the city, for some reason.
I don't know about the chemical weapons. It's not that I think the American military is above the use of chemical weapons, it's just that I keep wondering if they'd be crazy enough to do it. I keep having flashbacks of that video they showed on tv, the mosque and all the corpses. There was one brief video that showed the same mosque a day before, strewn with many of the same bodies- but some of them were alive. In that video, there's this old man leaning against the wall and there was blood running out of his eyes- almost like he was crying tears of blood. What 'conventional' weaponry makes the eyes bleed? They say that a morgue in Baghdad has received the corpses of citizens in Falloojeh who have died under seemingly mysterious conditions.
The wounded in Falloojeh aren't getting treatment and today we heard about a family with six children being bombed in the city. It's difficult to believe that in this day and age, when people are blogging, emailing and communicating at the speed of light, a whole city is being destroyed and genocide is being committed- and the whole world is aware and silent. Darfur, Americans? Take a look at what you've done in Falloojeh.
The situation in Baghdad isn't a lot better. Electricity has been particularly bad. Our telephone has been cut off for the last week which has made communication (and blogging) particularly difficult. The phone difficulties are quite common all over Baghdad. It usually happens in an area after a fresh bombing. We joke amongst ourselves that it's all an agreement with the new mobile phone companies, but the truth is that the mobile phones aren't very much more reliable. For the last couple of weeks we've been able to receive sms from abroad (which was impossible before). It's nice to get a message every once in a while from some concerned relative or friend living far away, especially when the phone starts glowing eerily in the darkened living room.
We spent the last week fixing up the house. Around 10 days ago, there were a series of very large explosions in our area and the third or fourth one took out three of the windows on one side of the house. Riverbend and family spent two days gathering shattered glass and sticking sheets of plastic over the gaping squares that were once windows. We sent E. for the window guy but he was booked for three days. Our window man has become a virtual millionaire with an average of about 20 windows to replace daily.
The situation is really bad in Baghdad. Many areas have turned into mini-warzones. A'miriyah, A'adhamiyah, Ghazaliyah and Haifa to name a few. The rest of us just get our usual dose of daily explosions and gun fire.
Elections are a mystery. No one knows if they'll actually take place and it feels like many people don't want to have anything to do with them. They aren't going to be legitimate any way. The only political parties participating in them are the same ones who made up the Governing Council several months ago- Allawi's group, Chalabi's group, SCIRI, Da'awa and some others. Allawi, in spite of all his posturing and posing, has turned himself into a hateful figure after what happened in Falloojeh. As long as he is in a position of power, America will be occupying Iraq. People realize that now. He's Bush's boy. He has proved that time and again and people are tired of waiting for something insightful or original to come from his government.
The weather is cool now. You can't leave the house without a jacket. Baghdad is popular for a dry, windy cold. The kind that settles in late, but once it's here, it seems to creep into everything, including one's bones. The kerosene heater has become my cherished friend these last couple of weeks. The days are much shorter and it gets a bit depressing when the darkness sets in- especially when there's no electricity. We aren't using the generator as much as before because there's still a fuel shortage.
There's a collective exhaustion that seems to have settled on Baghdad... it feels almost like an epidemic sometimes.

American Heroes...
I'm feeling sick- literally. I can't get the video Al-Jazeera played out of my head:
The mosque strewn with bodies of Iraqis- not still with prayer or meditation, but prostrate with death- Some seemingly bloated… an old man with a younger one leaning upon him… legs, feet, hands, blood everywhere… The dusty sun filtering in through the windows… the stillness of the horrid place. Then the stillness is broken- in walk some marines, guns pointed at the bodies... the mosque resonates with harsh American voices arguing over a body- was he dead, was he alive? I watched, tense, wondering what they would do- I expected the usual Marines treatment- that a heavy, booted foot would kick the man perhaps to see if he groaned. But it didn't work that way- the crack of gunfire suddenly explodes in the mosque as the Marine fires at the seemingly dead man and then come the words, "He's dead now."
"He's dead now." He said it calmly, matter-of-factly, in a sort of sing-song voice that made my blood run cold… and the Marines around him didn't care. They just roamed around the mosque and began to drag around the corpses because, apparently, this was nothing to them. This was probably a commonplace incident.
We sat, horrified, stunned with the horror of the scene that unfolded in front of our eyes. It's the third day of Eid and we were finally able to gather as a family- a cousin, his wife and their two daughters, two aunts + an elderly uncle. E. and my cousin had been standing in line for two days to get fuel so we could go visit the elderly uncle on the final day of a very desolate Eid. The room was silent at the end of the scene, with only the voice of the news anchor and the sobs of my aunt. My little cousin flinched and dropped her spoon, face frozen with shock, eyes wide with disbelief, glued to the television screen, "Is he dead? Did they kill him?" I swallowed hard, trying to gulp away the lump lodged in my throat and watched as my cousin buried his face in his hands, ashamed to look at his daughter.
"What was I supposed to tell them?" He asked, an hour later, after we had sent his two daughters to help their grandmother in the kitchen. "What am I supposed to tell them- 'Yes darling, they killed him- the Americans killed a wounded man; they are occupying our country, killing people and we are sitting here eating + drinking + watching tv'?" He shook his head, "How much more do they have to see? What is left for them to see?"
They killed a wounded man. It's hard to believe. They killed a man who was completely helpless- like he was some sort of diseased animal. I had read the articles + heard the stories of this happening before- wounded civilians being thrown on the side of the road or shot in cold blood- but to see it happening on television is something else- it makes me crazy with anger.
And what will happen now? A criminal investigation against a single Marine who did the shooting? Just like what happened with the Abu Ghraib atrocities? A couple of people will be blamed and the whole thing will be buried under the rubble of idiotic military psychologists, defense analysts, Pentagon officials and spokespeople and it will be forgotten. In the end, all anyone will remember is that a single Marine shot and killed a single Iraqi 'insurgent' and it won't matter anymore.
It's typical American technique- every single atrocity is lost and covered up by blaming a specific person and getting it over with. What people don't understand is that the whole military is infested with these psychopaths. In this last year we've seen murderers, torturers and xenophobes running around in tanks and guns. I don't care what does it: I don't care if it's the tension, the fear, the 'enemy'… it's murder. We are occupied by murderers. We're under the same pressure, as Iraqis, except that we weren't trained for this situation + yet we're all expected to be benevolent + understanding + - above all, grateful. I'm feeling sick, depressed and frightened. I don't know what to say anymore… they aren't humans and they don't deserve any compassion.
So why is the world so obsessed with beheadings? How is this so very different? The difference is that the people who are doing the beheadings are extremists… the people slaughtering Iraqis- torturing in prisons and shooting wounded prisoners- are "American Heroes". Congratulations, you must be so proud of yourselves today.

Ein Datum für den Beginn dieses Prozesses steht noch nicht fest.

Zudem läuft ein Verfahren wegen Steuerhinterziehung + wegen der ungeklärten Herkunft von Dollar-Millionen auf Konten in den USA gegen den Ex-Diktator. Es wurde jedoch nicht ausgeschlossen, dass diese Verfahren wie schon ein erstes 2001 wegen Altersdemenz eingestellt werden könnte.

The Los Angeles Times uncovered how the military sent spokespersons to major news networks to deliberately lie about military operations in Iraq in an effort to deceive the Iraqi resistance. We speak with retired Air Force Colonel Sam Gardiner.
The U.S. military is reportedly distributing misinformation to the media as part of a campaign of psychological operations. This according to a report in the Los Angeles Times. The paper has uncovered incidents where the military has sent spokespersons to major news networks to deliberately lie about military operations in Iraq in an effort to deceive the Iraqi resistance. In one case, on Oct. 14, a Marine spokesperson appeared on CNN from Fallujah and said "Troops crossed the line of departure." CNN was soon reporting the battle for Fallujah had begun. In fact it wouldn't begin for another three weeks. A senior Pentagon official told CNN that Gilbert's remarks were "technically true but misleading." It was an attempt to get CNN "to report something not true," the official said. The military claimed it wanted to see how Iraqi fighters responded to the so-called news report. Several top officials told the LA Times that they see a danger of blurring what are supposed to be well-defined lines between the stated mission of military public affairs and psychological and information operations. One senior defense official told the paper "The movement of information has gone from the public affairs world to the psychological operations world. What's at stake is the credibility of people in uniform." 03.Dec.2004 The opening shot of the UK "Gore was robbed" school is usually the popular vote case. If marginally more people voted for Mr Gore than for Mr Bush in the national vote, then he must be the moral winner. Surely the less popular candidate cannot be rightfully elected president? Ergo, the entire electoral college system is antiquated rubbish which should be junked in favour of strict majoritarianism.
What this would mean in practice would be that all future presidential elections would be determined by a few densely populated urban conurbations: New York, Chicago and Los Angeles would have an unbreakable stranglehold on the presidency. The great mass of rural and small-town middle America, virtually the whole sweep of the continent from north to south between the two coastal fringes, would be effectively powerless.
This is precisely what those few Democrat hotheads in the USA who have dared to suggest "a rethink" of the electoral college system would like: the absolute dominion of urban liberal political tastes.
To institute such a thing would be to reignite the American Civil War, which was settled - uneasily - on the understanding that metropolitan interests would not be allowed to run untrammelled over local ones. The USA, unlike those foppish dilettantes in New Labour, takes its devolution very seriously.
And what would the pundits' sudden passion for national majority rule mean if it were applied to UK?
Well, pretty much permanent Conservative government.
The vastly more populous South-East, which is usually far more Tory than the country at large, would dominate the election. I had forgotten that Josh Marshall was talking about this guy in October. The Republicans new about Tobin's criminal behavior for nearly four months, but kept him on the job. That fact tells you all you need to know about the G.O.P.'s willingness to do what it takes to maintain power.
The way to break the larger conspiracy is to pick up a medium-sized fish like Tobin and pressure him to speak up about the larger fish.

03.Dec.2004 The exit polls - again: Did the exit polls underestimate support for Kerry? That decidedly non-intuitive proposition is the underlying thesis of this piece on the Hispanic vote. The exits tagged Hispanic support for Bush at 44%, but he actually received about 40% of their votes. The given reason? The exit-pollsters oversampled heavily Cuban areas of Florida.

All early Tuesday indicators predicted a Kerry landslide. Zogby International (which predicted the 2000 outcome more accurately than any national pollster) did exit polling which predicted a 100-electoral vote triumph for Kerry. Zogby saw Kerry winning crucial Ohio by 4 %. Princeton professor Sam Wang, whose analysis had shown the election to be close in the week before the election, began coming up with dramatic numbers for Kerry in the day before and day of the election. Olbermann has run a troubling column in which he asserts that Bev Harris has not allowed his staff to examine the poll tapes. Olbermann speaks of "grand-standing" and even "tin-foil hatting" (a verb which I hope does not enter the language).

This is especially apparent when a conservative institution offers the same services or products as the liberal oriented institutions. In other words, if it is not possible for dominionists to takeover or grab power in every institution—they create a parallel world so that the left is to be separated + segregated from the right + conservatives are urged to purchase from the conservative institutions. The fact that Weyrich’s plan has actually been instituted is all around us. The Council on Foreign Relations is mimicked by the secretive dominionist Council for National Policy. [2] The so called “liberal” press is countered with Fox News and Sun Myung Moon’s Washington Times + dominionist talk show hosts spew their right wing political views and venom from coast to coast. Public schools are countered with private home and chartered schools. And in the last few months a move has been made within the churches to break-up and divide denominations along the lines of conservative beliefs in certain social issues so that two sets of churches will be created: one that practices right wing politics and one that is liberal! It almost mimics what Jesus said he would do in the Bible: those on the Lord’s left will be cast into outer darkness, those on the Lord’s right will be the chosen elect, the over-comers of God’s people. This biblical imagery appears to be a powerful biblical affirmation for church-goers who desire to be on the Lord’s “right” politically as well—until one realizes that when the two groups of people stand facing the Lord—the mirror image is reversed: those on his right will be those facing him on the left; those on the Lord’s left will be those facing him on the Lord’s right! It’s just an aside, but it suggests to me that justice will actually be done, when the Lord says, “I never knew you” to those who loudly proclaim their hypocritical religious devotion to him, while ignoring his command to feed the poor and cloth the naked. The biblical passage goes on to say that those about to be cast out ask, “When did we fail to feed the poor and cloth the naked?” The answer is: “In as much as you did it unto the least of these my children—you did it unto me.” When dominionists seek to privatize medicare and social security, and deregulate corporate controls on whole industries, so that the poor and needy become poorer and needier, they have done it to the Lord. 03.Dec.2004 I have paraphrased the four immoral principles of the Dominionist movement as the following: 1) Falsehoods are not only acceptable, they are a necessity. The corollary is: The masses will accept any lie if it is spoken with vigor, energy and dedication. 2) It is necessary to be cast under the cloak of “goodness” whereas all opponents and their ideas must be cast as “evil.” 3) Complete destruction of every opponent must be accomplished through unrelenting personal attacks. 4) The creation of the appearance of overwhelming power and brutality is necessary in order to destroy the will of opponents to launch opposition of any kind. According to Jeffry Sharlet, Hitler’s Mein Kampf and William L. Shirer’s The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich are studied as textbooks in a particular leadership training group he wrote about in Harper’s magazine. 03.Dec.2004 [2] The Council for National Policy (CNP) was founded in 1981 when Timothy LaHaye (author of the Left Behind series) became the organization's first president. He does, however, direct our attention to one Robert Ferrera, also convicted of wire fraud ($11 billion in counterfeit Mexican promissory notes -- ye gods!). This Ferrera fellow, according to court records, "assigned and delivered some of the Mexican notes to an associate in Lexington, Kentucky, who owned Five Star Investments, Ltd."
Horn made Lexington, Kentucky his home grounds, so we must be dealing with the same shady bunch. Madsen goes on to say:
Ferrera's name also surfaced in a 00.000..1994 Securities + Exchange Commission investigation of Northstar Investors' Trust of Bellevue, Washington. In that case, Grady Lewis Hand was indicted for a $3 million investment fraud. However, Hand was defended by the former head of the Drug Enforcement Administration's secret "CENTAC" unit, Dennis Dayle. Hand + Dayle claimed the investment fraud was actually a CIA front to fund off-the-books intelligence operations being hidden from Congress. Hand + Dayle said the money actually went to "General Robert L. Ferrera," said then to have worked for the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the forerunner of the CIA. Here's where it gets really (really really) hairy:
New information obtained from knowledgeable U.S. intelligence sources reveal that much of ex-Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos's billions of embezzled gold + money made its way into Five Star Trust, which was actually established in the late 1980 s as a Houston-based repository for Marcos's ill-gotten loot. Some of the Marcos money was stashed in accounts in the Cook Islands, a dependency of New Zealand that has its own banking + corporation laws. Cook Islands accounts have been associated with some of the money used in the Votergate scandal. Stop rolling your eyes. I have reason to believe that this is the real shit.
Now is not the time to tell the story of what is erroneously known as "Yamashita's Gold." Suffice it to say that this is no fairy tale -- the Japanese really did secret unbelievably massive amounts of gold during WWII. - an amount so massive that revealing its existence might well depress the price of gold. The loot also included much silver, jewelry + artworks. (Japan had no other real source of funding during the war.) In the post WWII. era, right-wingers have secretly been locating the many caches of this booty, located in Indonesia + the Philippines. Some of you may recall the news accounts which reported that General John K. Singlaub was involved with the recovery efforts in the late 1980s.
I have reason to believe that this money was used to create the infrastructure of our present right-wing media monster. To be specific: This money funded Murdoch .

Incidentally, I note that the first and foremost charge of the Ohio rally-organizers concerns the extra 3,893 that went to Bush in a Franklin County precinct. Disingenuous would-be debunkers have tried to explain this anomaly as a mere "software error." But we now know of many such "errors" across Ohio and across the country. We have, for example, the largely African-American precincts where a right-wing third-party candidates did ridiculously well, while Bush pulled roughly the same numbers as in 2000.
Since nearly every one of the reported "errors" across the country favored Bush, we may safely conclude that these events were about as "erroneous" as a punch in the face.

Auch die rekordverdächtigen Hurrikan-Schäden im Sommer dieses Jahres dürften Spuren im Haushalt der USA hinterlassen haben, die sich nach wie vor hartnäckig weigern, das Kyoto-Protokoll zum Klimaschutz zu ratifizieren.

"Im Fall des Ozonlochs hat die Staatengemeinschaft schnell reagiert und die FCKW-Emissionen gedrosselt", sagt Jendritzky. "So etwas muss auch in Bezug auf das Klima passieren, nur wäre das ein viel tieferer Eingriff in unsere Lebensverhältnisse." Denn um dem globalen Klimawandel entgegenzutreten, reiche es nicht aus, das Treibmittel in Haarsprays oder die Kühlflüssigkeit in Gefrierschränken auszutauschen. 02.Dez.2004 Zwar sei es unmöglich, eine direkte Verbindung zwischen menschlichen Einflüssen und der Hitzewelle von 2003 herzustellen, räumen Peter Stott von der University of Reading und seine Kollegen von der University of Oxford ein. Doch Analysen der Klimadaten seit 1851 hätten ergeben, dass der menschliche Eingriff in die Natur die Durchschnittstemperaturen und damit auch die Gefahr extremer Hitzewellen drastisch erhöht habe.
"Die Arbeit ist ein Durchbruch"
Gerd Jendritzky, Mitautor eines Begleitartikels in "Nature", bescheinigt Stott und seinen Kollegen saubere Arbeit. Die Briten hätten die natürlichen Klimaschwankungen in Europa korrekt berücksichtigt. Das Ergebnis stimme überein mit zahlreichen früheren Untersuchungen, die allesamt besagten, dass die globalen Klimaveränderungen während der vergangenen 30 bis 50 Jahre nur mit einem bedeutenden menschlichen Einfluss zu erklären sind. "Hitzewellen werden künftig in Europa häufiger vorkommen und extremer ausfallen", sagt Jendritzky im Gespräch mit SPIEGEL ONLINE.

"Gemessen an der Zahl der Todesopfer war es die größte europäische Naturkatastrophe der vergangenen 500 Jahre", sagt Gerd Jendritzky vom Deutschen Wetterdienst in Freiburg.
Risiko extremer Hitzewellen verdoppelt
Nun scheint auch festzustehen, dass der Mensch die Katastrophe zu großen Teilen mit zu verantworten hat. Es besteht eine Wahrscheinlichkeit von mehr als 90 %, dass der Hitzesommer 2003 kein Zufall war, sondern mindestens zur Hälfte auf den vom Menschen verursachten Klimawandel zurückgeht, schreiben UK Klimaforscher in "Nature" (Bd. 432, S. 610). Ihre Modellrechnungen haben ergeben, dass die Umweltverschmutzung etwa durch Treibhausgase das Risiko extremer Hitzewellen mehr als verdoppelt habe.
