Not only are the polls themselves subject to manipulation, but so are the reports of their findings.

The following from Counterpunch: ASSOCIATED PRESS Misrepresents Poll in Headline
Our friend Chris Kromm, director of the Institute for Southern Studies, examined a 15.Mar.2003 AP news story on a poll on pro + anti war sentiment among We the People + promptly dashed off the following letter to AP:
15.Mar.2003 Dear Associated Press, Today, the AP filed a story with the following headline: "Poll: Bush [BGW968] Has Solid Support for War."

Many readers, of course, will read only that headline, taking with it the message that the USA public overwhelmingly supports the Bush [BGW968] Administration's drive to war in Iraq.

However, after wading through reporter Will Lester's spin to actually read the poll results,

one finds the exact opposite to be true.
Buried in paragraph six, we find the relevant numbers:

"The poll found that :

about half of adults, 47 %, say they support military action to remove Iraqi President Saddam Hussein from power + disarm Iraq, even without the support of the UN Security Council.

Almost four in 10, 37 %, said the USA should do that only with full support of UN Security Council;

13 % said the USA should not take military action even if the Security Council agrees."
President Bush [BGW968] has resolutely stated he will prosecute a war against Iraq without the "full support of the [UN] Security Council" -- and appears poised to do so.
This means that fully 50% (37% + 13%) of those polled OPPOSE the Bush [BGW968] Administration policy on Iraq, as compared to 47% in favor.
Why is the Associated Press afraid to honestly report the poll's findings?

What can justify such an astonishingly misleading headline, followed by reporting from Mr. Lester with a similarly suspect message -- when the actual facts presented in the article point to precisely the opposite conclusion?

It's disconcerting to find ethnic cleansing celebrated as the height of piety.
Should we really give intolerance a pass if it is rooted in religious faith?
Many American Christians once read the Bible to mean that African-Americans were cursed as descendants of Noah's son Ham, and were intended by God to be enslaved. In the 19th century, millions of Americans sincerely accepted this Biblical justification for slavery as God's word — but surely it would have been wrong to defer to such racist nonsense simply because speaking out could have been perceived as denigrating some people's religious faith.
People have the right to believe in a racist God, or a God who throws millions of nonevangelicals into hell. I don't think we should ban books that say that. But we should be embarrassed when our best-selling books gleefully celebrate religious intolerance and violence against infidels.
That's not what America stands for, and I doubt that it's what God stands for.

we would have a fit.

We have quite properly linked the fundamentalist religious tracts of Islam with the intolerance they nurture + it's time to remove the motes from our own eyes.
In "Glorious Appearing," Jesus merely speaks and the bodies of the enemy are ripped open.

Christians have to drive carefully to avoid "hitting splayed and filleted bodies of men and women + horses." 
"The riders not thrown," the novel continues, "leaped from their horses and tried to control them with the reins, but even as they struggled, their own flesh dissolved, their eyes melted + their tongues disintegrated. . . . Seconds later the same plague afflicted the horses, their flesh and eyes and tongues melting away, leaving grotesque skeletons standing, before they, too, rattled to the pavement."
One might have thought that Jesus would be more of an animal lover.

“This war has been about corporate profits from the very beginning.”   CACI International Inc., worth over $1 billion, earns 92% of its revenue from the federal government.

Despite this public-bankrolled torture, CACI and other civilian contractors may escape prosecution due to legal loopholes. No laws exist to apply USA domestic law to private contractors; as civilians, contractors are not subject to military law + in Iraq, they are exempt from local law by order of USA administrator Paul Bremer.

“The USA public is lining the coffers of war criminals with tax dollars” commented Sunaina Maira, UC Davis professor of Asian Studies. “For the sake of Iraqi families, CACI must be held accountable for its actions.”

Downing Street insisted yesterday that the first time Mr Blair, Tony knew about the discredited intelligence was in the Butler report.

And the reason Mr Scarlett had not mentioned it, when giving evidence two months after MI6 had withdrawn the intelligence, was that "the validation process was still ongoing".

16.Jul.2004 Downing Street admitted that MI6 embarked on an unprecedented cover-up after it withdrew intelligence supporting UK Government's dossier on Saddam Hussein's weapons of mass destruction because it was unreliable.
In an astonishing admission after the disclosure of the cover-up in yesterday's Independent, Blair, Tony , Tony 's official spokesman said MI6 decided not to tell the Hutton inquiry - set up to investigate the death of the government scientist David Kelly - that crucial intelligence on Saddam's chemical and biological weapons was unsound.

The security services, he said, felt it was "too sensitive'' to be made public. The head of MI6, Sir Richard Dearlove, also decided not to tell Mr Blair, Tony .

The Prime Minister's spokesman said Mr Blair, Tony only became aware of the withdrawal of the intelligence as a result of the inquiry by Lord Butler of Brockwell, which was delivered three days ago.
Senior sources close to 00.000.2003 s Hutton inquiry said they were unaware that crucial intelligence had been withdrawn + had this been known, a number of government witnesses would have faced questions about the matter. The sources insisted that the fact that intelligence had been withdrawn by MI6 was not revealed to Lord Hutton either orally or in written evidence.
 19.Jul.2004 Report: Israel ready for pre-emptive strike against Iran's nuclear facility-"Israel Insider" -

The Israeli Air Force has completed military preparations for a pre-emptive strike at Iran's Bushehr nuclear facility + will attack if Russia supplies Iran with rods for enriching uranium, Israeli officials said,

according to a report in the London Sunday Times.

Military sources said the raid would be carried out by long-range F-15I jets, overflying Turkey, with simultaneous operations by commandos on the ground. 
Israel may also choose to launch submarine-based cruise missiles from the Persian Gulf at key Iranian targets, NewsMax.com reported. 
The rods, currently stored at a Russian port, are expected to be delivered late next year after a dispute over financial terms is resolved, the paper reported. 
An Israeli defense source in Tel Aviv, who confirmed that the military rehearsals had taken place, told the paper: "Israel will on no account permit Iranian reactors - especially the one being built in Bushehr with Russian help - to go critical." 
"If the worst comes to the worst and international efforts fail," the source was quoted as saying, "we are very confident we'll be able to demolish the ayatollahs' nuclear aspirations in one go." 
The Iranian nuclear threat has been on Israel's agenda for some time, + the issue was raised in talks between Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and USA President Bush [BGW968] in Washington 00.000.2003 -last year.

The Washington Post reported in 00.Aug.2003 that administration officials were increasingly concerned that Israel would launch a per-emptive strike against Iran. 
In its report, the Sunday Times quoted a senior USA official warning of a pre-emptive Israeli strike if Russia continues cooperating with the Iranians.

He said Washington was unlikely to block Israeli attacks against Iran. 
The paper also quoted from a classified document on the Iranian threat, entitled "The Strategic Future of Israel," which was presented to Sharon 00.000.2004 -earlier this year.

The document allegedly advocates military action against "countries which develop nuclear weapons" + describes Iran as a "suicide nation" + recommends "targeted killings" of members of the country's elite, including its leading nuclear scientists. 
Israeli sources acknowledged, according to the Sunday Times, that a pre-emptive strike against Iranian nuclear facilities could provoke "a ferocious response," which could involve Lebanese-based rocket attacks on northern Israel or terrorist attacks against Jewish and Israeli targets abroad. 
Meanwhile, Jane's Intelligence Digest reported this week that if Israel launches a pre-emptive attack against Iraq, it would have to go it alone. "Any joint USA-Israeli precision-guided missile strike against Iran's nuclear facilities - Bushehr, Natanz or Arak - is unlikely to prove an attractive option for the USA administration while it remains mired in Iraq - which shares a 1,458 kilometer-long border with Iran," Jane's reported. 
00.000.1981 Israeli Air Force jets successfully attacked and destroyed Iraq's nuclear reactor at Osirak. An attack on Iran's nuclear facilities would be much more complicated, Israeli media sources reported, because the country's nuclear program is dispersed at several sites and the distance from Israel is much greater. Iran also has the possibility to retaliate with its Shihab ballistic missiles, the reports said. 
Military sources believe the IDF has the capabilities to defend Israel against a possible Iranian missile attack. Officially, due to Israel's reliance on the newly developed Arrow anti-missile defense system, the country is giving priority to diplomatic pressure to combat the Iranian nuclear threat. 
 20.Jul.2004 Earlier, Iran acknowledged that suspected al-Qaeda members involved in the September 11 attacks may have passed through its territory, but insisted they would have done so "illegally".
"We have very long borders and it is impossible to totally control them," foreign ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi told reporters.
"It is natural that five or six people could have crossed our borders illegally without us seeing them," he insisted.
"The same thing happens on the border between the USA and Mexico."
Iran condemned the 11.Sep.2001 attacks, but has frequently been accused of harbouring and not cracking down on the group. And in February, Spain's top anti-terror judge Baltasar Garzon alleged that al-Qaeda had a "board of managers" operating in Iran.
But the regime was seen as being fiercely hostile to Afghanistan's Taliban and al-Qaeda + has vehemently denied allegations that it is supporting them.

The inquiry's interim reports have already shot down White House claims of a link between Saddam Hussein's Iraq and al-Qaeda, highlighted gaps in USA defences + levied tough criticism at intelligence services.
Time and Newsweek magazines, in similar reports quoting congressional, commission and government sources, reported that Iran relaxed border controls and provided "clean" passports for the so-called "muscle hijackers" to transit Iran to and from Osama bin Laden's camps between 00.Oct.2000-00.Feb.2001 .
The commission's report says Iran at one point proposed collaborating with al-Qaeda on attacks against America, but bin Laden declined, saying he did not want to alienate his supporters in Saudi Arabia, according to Time.
Newsweek said the Iranian finding in the commission's report is based largely on a 00.Dec.2001 memo discovered buried in the files of the USA National Security Agency.

The message of the Butler Report and the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence has been the same. The British and American intelligence services have been compromised and politicised.

Their findings on Iraq were edited to deliver the conclusions Prime Minister and President wanted, justifying an invasion the two had already decided on. Criticism has in the past focused on the issue of deliberate bias or lies introduced into the evidence by interested ideological or exile groups. But more pernicious in the end was probably the analytical distortion produced by the conventional wisdom.

Lies risk being challenged and discredited. The conventional wisdom carries no risk for the person who invokes it. It has become what 'everybody knows'.

19.Jul.2004 A security breach at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico last week is another setback for the University of California's management of the nuclear weapons facility. The identity of the culprits is still not known. But we do know that the public relations damage to the university will likely decrease its chances of retaining control of the lab, while increasing the odds for the University of Texas and several companies announcing this week their intent to bid on the lab's management contract.

On July 9 Los Alamos lab officials reported that two computer disks containing classified nuclear research information were missing. It is the third incident of missing classified data at the nuclear weapons lab in the last year. The loss of classified information came days before a July 12 Department of Energy deadline for competitors to express interest in bidding on Los Alamos' management contract, set to expire in September 2005.

The University of Texas Connection Who Gains from Missing Data at Los Alamos?

On July 9 Los Alamos lab officials reported that two computer disks containing classified nuclear research information were missing. It is the third incident of missing classified data at the nuclear weapons lab in the last year. The loss of classified information came days before a July 12 Department of Energy deadline for competitors to express interest in bidding on Los Alamos' management contract, set to expire in September 2005. The Department of Energy decided last year to open competition on the lab contract, in part because of poor management and security mishaps under University of California's leadership, which has managed the lab since 1943. This summer the DOE's National Nuclear Security Administration will be issuing a Request for Proposals. In addition to the University of California and the University of Texas, expected bidders include Lockheed Martin and Battelle Memorial Institute.

Given the timing of this latest incident, it makes one wonder if the individual or individuals behind the missing computer disks intentionally wanted to cast negative light on the University of California at the onset of the bidding process on the lab's management contract. We can only guess about the motives, but whether the computer disks were taken for personal gain or as an act of malice toward the university, the incident adds to UC's growing list of security problems at Los Alamos and will likely be a contributing factor when the DOE decides early next year on a new lab manager.

If the University of California leaves Los Alamos it could take with it parts of the paper trail that has accumulated over the past 61 years. Some of those records tell an unpleasant history of environmental contamination and callous disregard for worker safety. It would be in the university's best interest to remove those documents from the lab.

A concern among some scientists and lab administrators could be that their research at Los Alamos would become the property of, or credited to, others if the lab management changes hands.

Some employees at Los Alamos are eager for change. They view UC as an absentee landlord that doesn't treat workers fairly. A new manager won't necessarily solve the lab's problems, but some workers are ready to see UC leave.

Others to benefit if UC is ousted are some companies that currently subcontract at Los Alamos. One subcontractor, BWXT, has been in discussion with the University of Texas to form partnership to management the lab. Clearly BWXT would be better off as a partner rather than a subcontractor for UC.

Another beneficiary of a new lab manager would be the Department of Energy's nuclear weapons program itself. During a transition period of new management, it might be more difficult for outside oversight and scrutiny, more difficult for opponents of new nuclear weapons development to access information about those programs.

Regardless of the intent behind the missing computer disks, security breaches under the University of California's leadership like the incident last week will be perceived as the fault of the university. These breaches will embolden those who want the University of California to lose its management contract and will encourage institutions like the University of Texas and others who are vying to run the Los Alamos National Laboratory. This is unfortunate for those of us in Texas who do not want our flagship university involved with nuclear weapons development.

But just like any other cult, this one too has a fatal weakness, which people from within cannot visualize. It is blinded by a single dimension, power, whereas the "game" is far more complex. Ultimately, it takes a willing slave to sustain a ruthless master. If a slave refuses to be, a master ceases to exist. Power is a beast that feeds on fear and submission and dies without them.

Hence, beyond fear and rage, the will to resist subjugation and the praxis (reflective action) towards a more just and peaceful world remain not only the strongest bonds that unite us, humans with conscience, but also the most potent weapons of resistance available to us. For such a unity to mature, nevertheless, international law must itself evolve beyond the constraints set by the former East-West divide.

Judging from consistent media reports and opinion polls, the rest of the world seems to view it as a menacing rogue state that is arrogantly bullying other nations, east and west, north and south, into unqualified submission to its self-declared designs for world domination and incontestable economic supremacy.

Perceiving the USA under Bush [BGW968] as a "fearful giant throwing its weight around," George Soros summarizes in the Financial Times [.Mar.12, 2003] what has become common knowledge nowadays: "The [Bush [BGW968]] doctrine is built on two pillars: first, the USA will do everything in its power to maintain unquestioned military supremacy; second, it arrogates the right to pre-emptive action." The USA, according to this argument, maintains two classes of sovereignty: "American sovereignty, which takes precedence over international treaties; and the sovereignty of all other states."

That much is old news. It is lavishly published in respectable editorials, books and throughout the internet. What's new is that there is opportunity in the midst of the bleakest of disasters, as capitalist entrepreneurs have always held, albeit a different type of opportunity than the profit-obsessed one they've often eyed. With the USA' shocking and awful projection of the closest human approximation to absolute power to date, there is an equal but opposite global force of deep resentment, revulsion, dissidence and resistance that is fast developing.

And for the first time in decades, there is no simple dichotomy to conveniently divide the world into.

19.Jul.2004 I believe the only deterrent to a repetition of the Iraq situation is punishment in some form as war criminals.

" Labor, the Greens and the Australian Democrats also attended the forum, hosted by journalist Quentin Dempster.

Greens Senator Kerry Nettle said the $US151.1 billion ($A209.7 billion) spent so far by the USA on financing the war in Iraq could have halved world hunger.

The money also could have funded HIV/AIDS medicine, child immunisation, and clean water and sanitation needs of the developing world for two years.

"There's a tremendous amount of money being wasted on this particular exercise," she said.

She renewed the Greens' calls for Australia to withdraw all troops immediately.

But Democrats leader Andrew Bartlett said Australian troops should stay.

Concentrating on the role of a small contingent of troops was detracting attention from the real problems facing Iraqis and the task of rebuilding the country, he said.

"We must not forget our very important obligations to do all we can to help the people of Iraq," he said.

The Australian government should be working through the UN and not with the USA to ensure elections scheduled for January are held, he said.

John Valder told a peace forum in Sydney today the invasion of Iraq by the USA-led coalition was one of the great military atrocities of our time.

Mr Valder likened the war to a person breaking into a neighbour's house.

If a person invaded a home, killing one or two of its occupants, and subsequently found no evidence for their bad behaviour, that person would be arrested and imprisoned, he said.

"Bush [BGW968], Blair, Tony + Howard, as leaders of the three members of the coalition of the willing, inflicted enormous suffering on the people of Iraq. And, as such, they are criminals," Mr Valder said.

19.Jul.2004 The construction of an approximately 400-mile security barrier between the "West Bank" (Judea and Samaria) and the State of Israel is intended, according to Israeli government claims, to stop, or at least minimize, the continuous penetration of Arab Palestinian murderers.

Yet even the barrier's staunchest supporters do not believe it will succeed in stopping every suicide bomber. Here and there, Arabs, men and women, will sneak through the barrier's gates by posing as laborers or by digging tunnels; or will smuggle through the Jordanian borders (at the south, somewhere between the Dead Sea and Eilat, or in the north somewhere between the Sea of Galilee and Beit Shean). Moreover, the fence cannot defend Israelis from mortars or primitive missiles fired from the West Bank. Historically, strategic walls simply have not worked: neither the Great Chinese Wall nor the Roman Hadrian Wall in northern England nor the Berlin Wall could put a stop to determined invaders or infiltrators. All three are monuments to human shortsightedness. Therefore, from a military point of view, the fence is a bad investment.

18.Jul.2004 By AP KABUL, Afghanistan --  Three Americans accused of detaining and abusing Afghans on an independent hunt for terrorists appeared in court Sunday, acknowledged they ran an illegal jail and insisted they had contacts with the USA Defense Department, a judge said.

The trio, led by a former soldier named Jonathan K. Idema + four Afghans face charges of hostage-taking and assault over the detention of 11 men in a house in the capital. They could be jailed for up to 20 years if convicted.

USA + Afghan authorities deny any links to the men, describing them as free-lance vigilantes on a personal quest to fight terrorism. The men wore military fatigues and were able to fool both Afghan police and NATO peacekeepers into thinking they were legitimate.

Afghan security forces raided the makeshift prison and arrested the seven defendants on July 5 after peacekeepers realized they were impostors.

Appearing at a preliminary hearing at Kabul's lower court, Idema insisted that an Associated Press Television News reporter stop filming him.

"Bin Laden has half a million dollars on my head," Idema shouted, standing next to his co-accused in a khaki military uniform with a patch of tape covering the insignia on the shoulders.

The reporter was asked to leave the court.

But McGeough stands by his claims. He says he cannot name the witnesses but says neither knows the other has spoken to him about the allegations.

"The Prime Minister is said to have responded that they deserved worse than death, that each was responsible for killing more than 50 Iraqis each and at that point he is said to have pulled a gun and proceeded to aim at + shoot all seven," McGeough told ABC TV's Lateline .

"Six of them died. The seventh, according to one witness, was wounded in the chest [but] according to the other witness was wounded in the neck and presumed to be dead."

McGeough works for Fairfax newspapers and his claims have been published in the Sydney Morning Herald and the Age this morning.

Iyad Allawi has been accused of shooting seven Iraqi insurgents, killing six of them, in the week leading up to the handover of power from the USA last month.

Two unnamed people alleged to have seen the shootings have told Australian journalist Paul McGeough that Dr Allawi shot the insurgents in a courtyard adjacent to a maximum security cell in Baghdad.

Dr Allawi's office has denied the claims.

Senator Brown says he was horrified by the report.

He says he cannot understand why a man with Dr Allawi's history was appointed as Iraq's Interim Prime Minister.

He says Mr Howard needs to explain why Australian troops are currently in Dr Allawi's service.

"Allawi is a blood curdling individual," Senator Brown said.

"He helped Saddam Hussein get into power, then turned on him.

"Saddam Hussein went after him and he's now in a position to wreak his own trail of havoc in Iraq."

“These are dreadful allegations. It is vital that they are cleared up one way or another and that needs an independent inquiry,” said former Foreign Secretary Robin Cook, who quit the Cabinet over the Iraq war.

“An international body such as the Red Cross would be best able to give authority to the investigation that the situation now demands.”

Senior USA officials have not made an outright dismissal of the allegations but Allawi’s office has denied the claims concerning the conduct of the man meant to be leading Iraq towards democratic elections in January.

In a letter to the newspaper, it said Allawi had never visited the prison, did not carry a gun + that the allegations are rumours instigated by enemies of Allawi’s government.

Reports of the killings were also dismissed by the UK government. A spokesman for the Foreign Office said its staff in Baghdad had no knowledge of the allegations. “There are thousands of rumours sweeping the city and this is just one of them,” he said.

Forgeard betonte, er wolle keinen Handelskonflikt mit den USA: "Wird Airbus einen Handelskrieg beginnen? Nein. Ich bezahle lieber Ingenieure und Kaufleute als Anwälte und Lobbyisten."
Airbus halte das 1992 unterzeichnete Abkommen zwischen den USA und der EU ein, das unfaire staatliche Beihilfen im Flugzeugbau verhindern soll. Erst vor wenigen Tagen hatte der USA-Senator Patty Murray gedrängt, das Abkommen müsse gekündigt werden. Es beschränkt staatliche Beihilfen bei der Entwicklung neuer Flugzeuge auf ein Drittel der Kosten.
